OKOLEHAO RETURNS TO

MAUI!

THE ONLY TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN DISTILLED SPIRIT IS NOW AVAILABLE ON MAUI!

“It is a lengthy process and appears to be a lost art. There is no industry literature on how to make ‘Okolehao. The whole process had to be derived from scratch at our small scale craft distillery,” explains Braddah Kimo, Master Distiller. “We have taken quite some time to distill an authentic, 100 percent Maui made all natural spirit,” he states. The company is proud to offer a product previously unavailable anywhere for at least 40 years. This is a Limited Edition offering as the distillery will bottle only 200 cases. After it is sold, it may take 6-9 months before more will be available for purchase. At this time, it will only be available at independent fine liquor retailers and establishments in Hawai’i.

The Year in Quotes

- NOAA researcher Rusty Brainard, discussing C02-induced ocean acidification, which could decimate coral reefs and other ocean life, June 18

“In the Hawaiian sense, ho‘oponopono is restoring family love and family harmony…The broadest sense is to physically straighten up or put in order something that is in disarray.”

- Florence Hasegawa, the 101-year-old “Tweeting Grandma,” September 27

“Like those cargo cults that build runways to attract the planes they think are bringing presents from their ancestors, we are stuck with our mega resorts.” - Contributor Mark Sheehan, “Revisiting the Visitor Industry, Part II,” August 13

“Maui is the toughest place I’ve ever lived, but also the most rewarding.” - Matt Lane, founder of Lahaina Town Clean Up, September 12

- Staff Writer Anu Yagi, “Sedaris & Me,” November 5

“We won’t pretend to be able to read the innermost thoughts of Hawaii’s elected representatives, but we know a blatant bit of political cover when we see it.” “When I taught, I’d ask my students to write about various subjects and they’d write about everything except Maui, except Hawaii. I think it has to do with the fear that really great writers and stories can’t come out of this place.” - Writer Wayne Moniz, discussing his book Under Maui Skies, July 1

“Poor plantation workers—they just call you together and you nod your head.” - Kahu Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell, Sr., at an October 15 state water commission meeting concerning Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar’s water diversions

- Editor Jacob Shafer, discussing Hawaii lawmakers who used “respect for the committee process” to justify their votes against considering same-sex civil union bill HB444 “While we celebrate this landmark anniversary, we must remember that the privileges of statehood came with obligations. Hawaii, and the United States, have a sacred trust relationship with the indigenous people of Hawaii that still remains to be fulfilled.” - Sen. Daniel Akaka, discussing the 50th anniversary of Hawaii statehood, August 21

“[It’s] terrible—or so they tell me.”

- Contributor Sara Tekula, “The Unemployment Survival Guide,” November 12

“God doesn’t have a telephone.”

“This last month, since my interview, since my gums began to bleed and trickle into the corners of my mouth, since my body began to inexplicably bruise, I’ve thought I’d mostly be writing about Sedaris and our long talk about birds.”

- Maui County Department of Liquor Control Director Frank Silva, describing the ingredients of a Jager Bomb to the LC Adjudication Board, August 6

“No, this isn’t a David Lynch movie. It’s the unpleasant, labyrinthine world of the unemployment office.”

- Professor Lynette Paglinawan, discussing the ancient Hawaiian method of conflict resolution, December 13

- Michael Covich, vice president of Vietnam Veterans of Maui County and an opponent of the Iraq War, at a ceremony honoring Maui’s “fallen warriors,” March 13

- Words spelled out on the chests of children at an Admission Day protest near the Kahului Airport, August 21

“It’s kind of shocking how little we know about this topic.”

“They’ve found paradise in the same place we have. And it has had catastrophic results.”

- Legendary shaper Bob “Ole” Olsen, discussing his passion with contributor and fellow surfer Beau Ewan, July 2

- Hawaii Supreme Court ruling, case number 29035, which put the Superferry out of commission, filed March 16, 2009

- State wildlife biologist Fern Duvall, discussing Maui’s out-of-control feral cat population, November 11

“After more than a full year of operation, it’s time to give the albatross of inter-island travel known as the Hawaii Superferry a progress report. Has the high-speed ferry service given indications it can be profitable in the long term? Has there been justification for Gov. Linda Lingle leading the charge, with state legislators close behind, to rewrite the state’s environmental laws? Has the entire state been taken for a choppy, 40 knots per hour, $45 million ride? And is this the biggest boondoggle in state history?”

- Contributor Rob Parsons, “Superferry Progress Report,” March 12

“It has something to do with the chemistry of moving water and all those positive ions bouncing around. Surfers are surrounded by, and addicted to, that positive energy.”

“Based on our analysis herein, we hold that Act 2 is unconstitutional as it is a special law in violation of Article XI, section 5 of the Hawaii Constitution.”

“These families deserve the respect that goes with the plaques we gave them, and the men deserve the respect of being on that wall.”

“F-A-K-E S-T-A-T-E”

“Financial matters do not appear to be one of [Obama’s] strengths…Let’s all hope the strengths [he] has shown in other areas will soon be revealed in Doug Levin, “The his economic policies.” - Contributor Inauguration Issue,” January 22

The Year in Covers 1 This cover was one of my favorites to create. A few simple photos of the burial site and the juxtaposition of a bulldozer made for an immediate—and heartbreaking—image. -Brittany Shaw, former Art Director 2 After much deliberation with the editorial staff about how to make yet another Superferry story feel fresh, we finally settled on the most obvious and eye-catching solution. The big red ‘F’ was actually a last-minute addition that brought the whole thing together. -BS

I lost a tooth and I’m told I mustn’t throw it away because a 100-yr-old tooth is a “rare artform.” Hahaha.

7 This cover strikes a very personal chord. Anu was rushed to the hospital and hadn’t yet finished her story, so I was kind of flying blind. Amazingly, we were on the same page and the design ended up matching her story more perfectly than we could have planned. -CS

I used to watch CNN everyday, but now I like Animal Planet and food shows better.

I’m 101. Spending today by myself, without a care, glad there’s no man sitting on the couch expecting me to cook his meals.

5 This was the first cover after the redesign. I was really excited about helping take MauiTime in a new direction, and I think this new look accomplishes that, while also lining up with the transition to more Web content. -Chris Skiles, Art Director

There’s a storm watch for Hawaii, but I don’t think so. I can see blue patches in the sky. But then, what would an old lady like me know?

My family keeps putting food on my plate they think I want. I put it all back because I prefer serving myself!

SURFER WITH

4 I originally took the photo for this cover while I was enjoying a visit to the summit with my boyfriend. I wanted the design to look like a mix between sci-fi and National Geographic, so I merged the photo of the sunrise with a pre-existing photo of the observatory and added some typographical flourishes to drive the theme home. -BS

6 Our Halloween issue was my introduction to how seriously Mauians take their politics (and politicians). The cover caused quite a stir—which was what we were hoping for. Some said it was too much, and it may have overshadowed the story a bit, but in the end I defend this design—it was Halloween! -CS

3 “Whose idea was that?” This concept—based around an intentionally cheesy Photoshop job pasting LC Director Frank Silva’s head on John Travolta’s body—was sort of an Art Director’s nightmare. However, it ended up striking a good balance between humor and righteousness and became a weeklong roast of the LC. -BS

WHIP IT GOOD In September, engaging in a 300year tradition of the Dussera holiday in India’s Tamil Nadu state, Hindu priests ritually whipped 2,000 young women and girls over a five-hour period as penance for a range of sins, from insufficient studying to moral impurity. Said one sobbing yet inspired lash recipient, to an NDTV reporter, “[W]hen we are whipped, we will get rid of our mental and physical ailments and evil spirits. Also, in November, Pope John Paul II was revealed to have periodically atoned for sins by privately whipping himself, according to a nun who worked with him and who was cited in the Vatican’s ongoing consideration of John Paul II for sainthood. The nun said she heard him distinctly several times from an adjacent room.

SPIT HAPPENS (1) Charles Hersel, 39, was arrested in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in November after police investigators overheard him offer $31 to a Westlake High School boy to spit in Hersel’s face. Several boys had complained to police that a man (allegedly Hersel) had approached them, offering money for expelling saliva and other bodily fluids on him. (2) Also in November, Patrick Girard, 29, a member of the City Council in Plattsburgh, N.Y., apologized to the constituent in whose face Girard had spit at the height of a barroom argument about the Boston Red Sox.

TRAGIC IRONY

An officer in line at a traffic light, realizing that cars had not moved through two light changes, walked up to the lead car to investigate. The driver said she was not able to move on the green lights because she was still on the phone and thus driving off would be illegal. The officer said a brief lecture improved the woman’s understanding of the law.

Dr. Hulda Clark, 80, passed away in September of multiple myeloma, an advanced cancer of the plasma cells. Before she was stricken, she had authored three books touting her eccentric remedies as cures, first, for “all diseases, and then, especially, cancer. In her books, she urged those diagnosed to immediately stop chemotherapy and embrace her quixotic regimens, to subdue the “parasites that cause cancer.

(1) Vincent Salters, 46, was arrested in East Knoxville,Tenn., in November after having shoplifted shoes the day before from the Shoe Show store. He had dashed out hurriedly with several display shoes, but an employee said they were all for the left foot. Salters was arrested outside the store the next day, perhaps having come to pick up right-foot shoes. (2) Travis Himmler, 22, was charged with burglary in November after allegedly stealing the cash register from the Golden Wok restaurant in Bloomington, Minn., and carrying it away on his bicycle. He was found down the street, injured, after taking a bad tumble when the dangling cash register cord got caught in the bike’s spokes. â–

When Minnesota’s Riverview Community Bank opened for business in 2004, founder Chuck Ripka claimed divine inspiration— that God had told him to “pastor the bank and, in exchange, that He would “take care of the bottom line, leading Ripka to use “prayer as a theme in the bank’s promotions. In October 2009, Riverview became only the sixth bank in the state to be shut down by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Riverview acknowledged that it had invested aggressively in real estate.

Re the December 17 feature “Local Money?”: This is an interesting idea, but I wonder how viable it would be. As the story states, as soon as a local currency got popular enough to really be working, the feds would bring the hammer down. They don’t want the competition. Until Hawaii becomes its own nation, I imagine we’ll keep spending the money with the dead white guys on it.

Ex-Maui, via mauitime.com Why should they get the telescope when we no longer have the taro? Whey should fat cat scientists eat imported food when we have to rely on Spam rather than hunt our own pigs? Why should we let the haoles build their fetish-object to study the sun? We already know that the sun gives us life, and all life depends on it. Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun. But the haoles have forgotten this simple truth. They don’t know where the center of the Earth is anymore. That is why we have to drive them off the top of Haleakala first, and off the island next.

2009:

Despite a cratering financial crisis, two open-ended foreign occupations and the looming spectre of global climate change, the year begins with one overwhelming reason for optimism: in 20 days, someone other than George W. Bush will be President of the United States. The fact that that someone is a charismatic, eloquent Hawaii-born Senator riding a wave of “hope” and “change” is merely icing on the long-overdue cake…. On Maui, where the prevailing spirit of change didn’t impact the local election, the new County Council is sworn in, led by Chairman Danny Mateo. Among the new/old members is Wayne Nishiki, lugging his elephant-sized loan from developer Everett Dowling up to the eighth floor…. As layoffs and gloomy forecasts cast a pall over the company, outgoing Maui Land & Pineapple CEO David Cole drops close to 30,000 shares of stock, for a total haul of nearly $400,000. Not bad for a day’s “work”…. Prior to his swearing-in, President-elect Obama jets to Oahu with his family, but avoids a meet-and-greet with Gov. Linda Lingle (a vocal and active McCain/Palin supporter) saying through a spokesperson he’d rather “spend his vacation with family and friends.”… Maui Lani Partners, LLC’s Central Maui development becomes the latest project to uncover ancient Hawaiian burial sites, revealing yet again the alwaysroiling tension between modern business

All that’s missing is the white cat….

plateful of platitudes, some backward-looking horn tooting, a Tibetan proverb and even a shout-out to our old pals in the LC, but not much in the way of concrete policy statements or, you know, actual ideas…. The state House of Representatives passes HB444, a bill that would legalize same sex civil unions. Angus McKelvey is the lone Maui rep to side with the “nays.”… Less than a month after trumpeting its maiden flight from Kahului to Honolulu, Mokulele Airlines finds itself flying through some serious financial turbulence, with Mainland-based Republic Airway Holdings threatening to step in and seize Mokulele’s assets if the airline doesn’t make good on a maxed-out $8 million credit line. Heaving up a hail Mary, Mokulele puts out a call for angel investors. Because who doesn’t want to throw money at a foundering airline?… The United States Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the ceded Hawaiian lands case. The highlight: Gen. Mark J. Bennett, arguing on behalf of the state, is forced to admit that Gov. Lingle’s promise not to sell the land if she’s granted the right to do so is, shall we say, non-binding….

FEBRUARY Staff Writer Kate Bradshaw’s story on the Northern Pacific Gyre garbage swirl (the patch of plastic roughly twice the size of Texas that’s floating between Hawaii and the Mainland), written months before most major news outlets picked up the scoop, sparks a small tsunami of reader feedback. Mostly it’s an understandable mix of shock, outrage and befuddlement…. As the Michael Phelps bong saga drags on (and late night comedians scrape the bottom of the lung capacity-joke barrel), Maui Police Chief Tom Phillips weighs in on Hawaii’s medical marijuana mess by citing a familiar cast of boogeymen—assault, murder, etc.—apparently forgetting (or choosing to ignore) that those crimes only go along with illegal marijuana. Meanwhile, the University of Hawaii releases a report saying the state could save and gain more than $30 million annually by decriminalizing and taxing pot. But come on—it’s not like we need money or anything…. A 9,600-ton warship, the USS Port Royal, runs aground on Oahu, damaging a large section of coral reef. Between that and the sonar, Hawaii’s ocean creatures might want to consider filing a restraining order against the U.S. military…. The Year That Got Old in a Hurry MARCH Jumping from one beleaguered, cashstrapped arena to another, Mike McCartney steps down as director of the state Teacher’s Association to take the reins of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. He replaces Rex Johnson, whose fate was sealed when he was caught forwarding racist and sexist e-mails on the company computer. Less than a week later, the state Supreme Court rules that Act 2, the special law that allowed the Superferry to be launched without a completed Environmental Impact Statement, was unconstitutional. The decision proves to be a fatal blow for the troubled inter-island vessel, which is sent to Mobile, Alalbama to be “position[ed] for future employment.” Later in the month, addressing accusations that the boat was built for clandestine

military purposes, Superferry CEO Tom Fargo gives one of those spit-take quotes you have to rewind and listen to again: “[If that were the case] we certainly wouldn’t have gone to the trouble to paint the Alakai the way we did.”… After weeks of stalling, the Senate kills HB444, voting 18-6 to leave the bill in committee. Most Senators hide behind “respect for the committee process,” though it’s possible the mass of red shirted protestors who descended on the Capitol to protest against civil unions played a role…. The U.S. Supreme Court rules in the ceded lands case, finding that the Apology Resolution was, well, just an apology and doesn’t affect the right of the state to sell or transfer some 1.2 million acres of land owned by the Hawaiian monarchy at the time of the 1893 overthrow….

APRIL Judge Joseph Cardoza shoots down the latest attempt by Maui Dance Advocates (MDA) to challenge the Department of Liquor Control’s Footloose-esque dancing rules, and we take the opportunity to cast LC Director Frank Silva as the lead in another movie: Saturday Night Fever. Meanwhile, despite continued indifference from the County and the courts, the MDA boys, Anthony Simmons and wheelchairbound Ramoda Anand, and their pro bono attorney, Lance Collins, pledge to keep up the fight…. In honor (if that’s the right word) of tax day, Mauians stage “Tea Party” protests. The rallies happen nationwide and get a lot of attention, especially from FOX News, which also, coincidentally, was instrumental in organizing and promoting them…. A localized outbreak of swine flu in Mexico leads to dire headlines and ripples of panic. Of course, with flu season six months away, surely we’ll all be calm and prepared by the time it’s a serious threat…. Pacific Radio Group’s X92.5 switches formats from modern rock to island sounds, leaving Maui rock fans (yes, they exist) with

one less option on the dial. And they had precious few to begin with….

MAY Gov. Lingle invites the Tea Partiers to a gathering on the steps of the Capitol, where she vetoes bills that would raise taxes on the state’s highest earners and would also bump up taxes on hotel rooms and the sale of real estate worth more than $2 million. Blatant political theater, meet frothing, scattershot outrage. What’s that? You two have already met? Oh, I’ll leave you alone then…. After less than five months on the job—during which the company lost more than $13 million, sold its Plantation Golf Course and fired 100 workers—Maui Land & Pineapple CEO Rob Webber calls it quits. Hard to imagine why…. The Hawaii Republican Party picks its new chairman: ultra-religious Jonah Kaauwai, who, along with Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona, signals a clear right-religious shift for the party. Accepting his new post on the Big Island, Kaauwai ominously compares the GOP to a hurricane. You know, those things that blow a lot of hot air and leave a trail of difficult-to-repair damage in their wake.… To help close the budget gap, Gov. Lingle orders sweeping work furloughs for all state employees. The unions and legislature immediately praise the decision and everyone gathers on the beach to join hands and sing a rousing rendition of “Kumbaya.” Just making sure you were still paying attention….

M.R.C. Greenwood is named the new president of the University of Hawaii, despite the fact that she was forced to resign from a highranking position in the University of California system amid charges of nepotism. Really—nepotism in Hawaii? Unheard of!… The County Board of Ethics completes its review of the Wayne Nishiki case, but its findings are initially kept secret to all but Nishiki and the board. (Eventually the review is unsealed and found to contain—gasp!—not much.)… Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann throws his hat into the gubernatorial ring, and less than 24 hours later his Democratic opponent, Rep. Neil Abercrombie, fires the first shot, accusing Hannemann of leaving the Oahu rail project “leaderless.” At this rate, both men will be mostly mud by the time the election actually happens…. We celebrate our 500th issue with a big self-congratulatory retrospective (sound familiar?).… North Korea announces plans to launch a missile in Hawaii’s general direction, apparently Kim Jong Il’s version of “you show me yours, I’ll show you mine.”… State officials push to move liquidation proceedings in the Superferry case to Delaware, also known as America’s corporate tax haven. Because what better place to decide the fate of a Hawaii ferry service than a tiny East Coast state 5,000 miles away?… Hawaii records its first swine flu-related death. But hey, it’s still summer. Plenty of time to get it together…. Longtime Maui activist and educator Uncle Ed Lindsey passes away; Rob Parsons remembers him as “a friend and hero to many, and a spirited warrior for the ‘aina.”…

JULY The Democratic-controlled legislature overrides 34 of Gov. Lingle’s vetoes, crushing the previous state record of 19. In a nominee for understatement of the year, House Minority Leader and lonely Republican Lynn Finnegan (who opposed the overrides) is quoted as saying

her fellow lawmakers “were kind of flexing their muscle.”…. The Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association jumps into the grim economic news clusterhump and reports that new vehicle registrations on Maui fell 46 percent in the second quarter…. The Hawaii Department of Health again affirms the validity of Obama’s birth certificate, but the “birthers” press on, undaunted by reality…. Sarah Palin abruptly resigns as Governor of Alaska. In her desultory, at times barely coherent farewell speech she takes a shot at “lame duck” leaders who serve out their terms, which would seem to include her good buddy Gov. Lingle. Naturally, we seize the opportunity to Photoshop Lingle’s head onto a duck, and stick a rifle-toting Palin in the background….

AUGUST MauiTime bids a fond and misty-eyed farewell to Calendar Editor/Staff Writer Kate Bradshaw and Art Director Brittany Shaw (who both land in Florida, of all places), and welcomes their respective replacements, Anu Yagi and Chris Skiles…. A report from the National Transportation Safety Board reveals disturbing details about the two go! Airline pilots who fell asleep at the wheel in February and overshot the Hilo airport by 26 nautical miles. The incident is dubiously blamed on an undiagnosed case of sleep apnea…. Our two-part report, “Revisiting the Visitor Industry,” by contributors Doug Levin and Mark Sheehan, examines Maui and Hawaii’s dependence on tourism and (possible) solutions, some of them radical. Thought-provoking stuff, but we’re not holding our breath…. Hawaii celebrates 50 years of statehood, though “celebrate” may be too strong a word. Official ceremonies are generally subdued, while most of the passion is reserved for the concurrent Native Hawaiian protests…. Folks at Little Beach mark Go Topless Day by doing what they always do, and we stand with them in solidarity, supporting the right of women to doff their shirts in public. Seriously. Quit snickering… The funding for Everett Dowling’s Makena development dries up, leaving the controversial project in ruins. helped push it through are curiously silent…. Gov. Lingle announces plans to lay off some 50 agricultural inspectors. Critics point out that if invasive species slip though, containment and eradication would more than negate the short-term savings. Once again, logic and the Governor prove to be ships (ferries?) in the night….

SEPTEMBER Us media types score a rare victory, when the state Supreme Court upholds Hawaii’s Media Shield Law, affirming the right of journalists (including the Kauai filmmaker who was the center of the case) to protect sources…. Participants in the Maui County Energy Expo emerge with cautious optimism, which is certainly better than unbridled pessimism. Still it’s clear that, despite abundant alternative sources, we’re a long way from energy independence…. The long-delayed Kealia Pond Boardwalk in South Maui opens after 15 years of planning and construction. To be fair, that’s only five years more than it took to dig the Panama Canal…. The Hawaii Teachers Union agrees to a new contract that includes 17 “Furlough Fridays,” where schools will be closed and parents and kids will be left to fend for themselves. Gov. Lingle initially praises the agreement as an example of “shared sacrifice,” but the whole thing quickly dissolves into acrimony, with each side blaming the other. The silver lining? Our students learn a valuable lesson about compromise and effective conflict resolution—namely, how not to achieve either…. Gay & Robinson officially ends sugar cane processing operations on Kauai, leaving Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) as the state’s last remaining sugar plantation…. Speaking of HC&S, an effort by enviros and Native Hawaiians to restore water to the island’s streams is met by predictable resistance from the plantation, which would rather keep right on diverting, thank you very much. To defend its longstanding water monopoly, HC&S and parent company Alexander & Baldwin call in some big public and private guns, including the Governor. They may be the last of a dying breed, but they’ve still got plenty of clout….

MauiTime rolls out a new look with a comprehensive cover-to-back page redesign and drops the word “weekly” from the masthead. But don’t worry—the print edition still comes out every week…. Digging for the source of the biodiesel Kahului-based Maui Petroleum has been contracted to provide the County, Rob Parsons is met with a suspiciously vehement “no comment.”… Contributor Ynez Tongson lands an exclusive interview with Lahaina’s Florence Hasegawa, who, at age 101, is active on the microblogging site Twitter. Though, as Florence makes clear, she really couldn’t care less: “People can do whatever they want.”… President Obama wins a Nobel Peace Prize. That means he’ll end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, right?… Councilman Joe Pontanilla introduces a bill to ban the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving in Maui County. We point out that there’s already a law on the books (Section 291-12 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes) that broadly outlaws driving “without due care,” which could also include things like eating while driving, reading, fiddling with the radio, etc. Of course, enforcing existing laws isn’t nearly as sexy or headline-grabbing as passing new, trendy ones…. The Obama Justice Department releases a memo announcing it will honor state medical marijuana laws. Perhaps having smoked a little of the good stuff herself, Gov. Lingle continues to use federal prohibition to justify her opposition to the will of Hawaii voters…. As Maui boy Shane Victorino and his Philadelphia Phillies make a second consecutive run for the World Series, the independent Golden Baseball League announces plans to bring professional baseball back to Maui for the first time in more than a decade…. Our Halloween cover, featuring a caricature of Mayor Tavares as a brain-chomping zombie, sets off a First Amendment controversy when County employees confiscate copies of the paper from a public building (the same one that houses the Mayor’s office, in fact) and are caught in the act. A heated debate about censorship, journalistic ethics and the boundaries of good taste ensues. Really, we just thought it was a funny picture…. Speaking of Halloween, another year on Front Street comes and goes with no centralized organization. Concerns about public safety prove overblown, and in the end it’s mostly a non-event. Which, for bar and restaurant owners and people who used to flock to the party, is the problem….

NOVEMBER On the heels of news that October was the bloodiest month in the eight-year history of the war in Afghanistan comes President Obama’s announcement that he’ll send 30,000 additional troops to the country early next year. Wait, didn’t he win some prize or something?… Staff Writer Anu Yagi is diagnosed with leukemia and writes a poignant, searingly honest cover feature about her experience, weaving in an interview with bestselling writer David Sedaris…. Hey remember swine flu? Well, turns out we didn’t get it together after all. Maui’s public health official Dr. Lorrin Pang tells

MauiTime that miscommunication from federal officials is rampant and that there’s so little of the vaccine, health care workers are “fighting amongst [themselves].”…. Former Planning Director Chris Hart adds his name to the list of confirmed challengers to Mayor Tavares, joining former Mayor Alan Ararkawa…. Obama picks Islam Siddiqui, a lobbyist for big ag, as his Chief Agricultural Negotiator, and the back-scratching merry-go-round keeps spinning…. Our report on Maui’s exploding feral cat population uncovers some disturbing statistics (there could be as many as 400,000 feral cats on-island) and comes to some even more disturbing conclusions (there’s probably nothing we can do about it)…. Gov. Lingle jets over to China to grip, grin and tap a growing tourist market. She’s there at the same time as the President, but somehow their paths don’t cross…. Speaking of China, Lt. Gov. Aiona presides over a mass Chinese wedding on Oahu that’s filmed for a reality TV show. But gay people getting married? [Shudder]….

DECEMBER Contributor Greg Mebel looks at how cuts in the Maui Public Defender’s Office are undermining justice at all levels…. Monster waves hit Maui’s north shore and the ballsy pro surfers follow…. The Department of Land & Natural Resources damages a section of South Maui reef while sinking large concrete pieces meant to serve as an artificial reef. Unfortunately, fish enjoy a functioning habitat more than irony…. Rep. Neil Abercrombie resigns from Congress to focus full time on his run for governor, and we compare his farewell speech to Sarah Palin’s…. The National Science Foundation officially selects Haleakala as the site of its Advanced Technology Solar Telescope. Native Hawaiians vow to keep up their opposition…. The much-ballyhooed climate summit in Copenhagen kicks off, but early indications are there will be no radical or binding agreements to seriously curb C02 emissions…. And so the year limps toward the finish line much the way it started the race: with a still-cratering financial crisis, two openended foreign occupations (one winding down, the other ramping up) and the looming spectre of global climate change. It’s tempting—and easy—to predict 2010 will be equally bleak, that we’ll be back here next year doing the same song and dance. But hey—hope springs eternal, right? ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/feature24

The Year in Restaurants Amidst the gloom, there were a lot of tasty bright spots

D

espite all of the dreary economic indicators for Maui, plenty of restaurateurs decided to give it a go in 2009. After all, everyone must eat. Bravo to the brave food and beverage entrepreneurs whose spirits weren’t dampened by locations that have yet to hold a successful eatery despite other attempts, or the daunting Liquor Commission and Planning Commission hoops to jump through. Here’s a look at a few standouts:

the main restaurant. My last visit I had soup and salad on the way to the park, but most times I pick up a ham and pineapple pizza, the family favorite, which of course you can also get delivered. Max, Haiku Town Center, Haiku, 575-2629; Max To Go, Haiku Town Center, Haiku, 575-2246.

Bistro Casanova owner Giovanni Steven Cappelli.

BIG REPUTATIONS ON THE WEST SIDE

BEST ETHNIC CUISINE ON THE SCENE Maui’s history with Indian food has been a bit sketchy. A curry place here, a Taj Mahalo there, nothing lasting long, definitely not more than two years. In 2009, we got two new choices, both in Kihei, and both strong enough to stick around: the more casual Maui Masala in the Dolphin Plaza, and the sit-down ocean views of Monsoon India in the Menehune Shores. Hopefully enough Mauians will discover their love of curries and naans to keep these places going in 2010 and beyond. Maui Masala, 2395 S. Kihei Rd. #110, Kihei, 875-9000; Monsoon India, 760 South Kihei Road, #109, Kihei, 875-6666.

MOST NEEDED IN CENTRAL MAUI Bistro Casanova sauntered onto the Kahului dining scene like an old friend, serving the lunches we dreamed of but were never offered. Delectable housemade bread rolls and bread sticks to snack on while you wait, sandwiches, crepes and salad washed down with strawberry ice tea, or cocktails

if its that kind of lunch. More recently they began serving dinner, an amalgamation of Italian, Spanish, Mediterranean and French dishes. I love their tasty filet, but especially the Antipasto di Mare, a seafood salad that has muscles, calamari and shrimp. Another plus for the Bistro: it’s a stylish getaway for the going-out crowd, offering mojitos by the carafe and a tapas menu. 33 Lono Ave. #150, Kahului, 873-3650.

FINALLY: PIZZA DELIVERY & QUICK FOOD IN HAIKU John and Cristina Graziano are new to the restaurant world, but their dedication is clear. Opening one restaurant in one of the most rural enclaves on Maui wasn’t enough for them—they’re busting their butts out in Haiku with a sit-down dinner joint, Max, and a morning and lunch take-out place, Max to Go. The selection at the latter is a pared-down version of what’s offered at

If your reputation precedes you, does that give you an edge on the competition, or just big expectations to meet? Both. With the opening of Davis Paul’s Island Grill, Chef David Paul comes back to Lahaina almost two decades after opening—and later selling—the Lahaina Grill on Lahainaluna Road. David Paul’s Island Grill reinvents Chef David with a modern look, fresh ideas and, of course, good food. His attention to fresh island products and innovative creations spawned the Princess and the Pea, a seared scallop on the most amazing pea cake, one of the best things I put in my mouth this year. Also entering the dining fray on the West side with a big rep is TS Restaurants’ Duke’s Beach House. TS will now have four out of their 13 restaurants on Maui, and that is no accident. All four reside on the West side with fabulous ocean views. The controversial development of North Beach notwithstanding, they have opened a gorgeous Duke Kahanamoku-themed place, complete with Hawaiian artifacts and the signature Duke’s style. David Paul’s Island Grill, 900 Front St., Lahaina, 662-3000; Duke’s Beach House, Honua Kai Resort, 130 Kai Malina Pkwy., 662-2900.

FOOD, DRINKS & LIVE MUSIC I’ve got to hand it to Diamond’s Ice Bar and Grill for opening the club in the first place, and then staunchly supporting live music on Maui with their Friday Night Live series. A different live band has played every Friday, meaning you can expect a fun and eclectic crowd. This is one place that makes a great martini—bringing back my faith in mixology—and the bartender doesn’t roll his or her eyes if you order one. Dress up, come out and if you get hungry, the menu goes ’til the wee hours. More recently I checked out Big Mike’s Throwback Thursday night, a mix of quality ’80s and ’90s dance tunes. Don’t act—you know you totally wanna dance. 1279 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 874-9299.

THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY Of course, 2009 saw a lot of establishments close their doors. It’s a tough enough business when things are going good, and, well, you know… We’d rather not dwell on it, but here are a few goodbyes: Santa Fe Cantina, Rusty Harpoon, Henry’s, Maui Bake Shop, Pauwela Cafe, Unisan, Rosa’s Cantina and Rosa’s Taco Cart, Greek Bistro, Roy’s Kihei, Kujo’s, Compadres and Bernard’s Bento & Banquets. Aloha. ■ Got a hot food scoop? Contact Jen Russo at 280-3386. To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/dining24 For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

The Year in Music High notes from our extensive coverage of the local scene

W

hile the Allies spent January 1, 1942 signing the Declaration of the United Nations, The Alliez spent 01/01 of ’09 snagging ink in MauiTime’s first Music Scene article of the year. Contributor Ynez Tongson admitted being “usually suspicious of a band that intentionally misspells its name as well as song titles,” but said that in The Alliez’s case she’d make an exception. Why? Because “while Nazi Germany has collapsed, good music never dies.” And then there was AnDen. In the second review of the year, former Staff Writer Kate Bradshaw took us around the world in search of the meaning behind this local band’s name. Could it be found in Peruvian “terraces carved into Andes mountainsides,” or on a train platform in Spain? Perhaps Switzerland held the key, where “anden translates as ‘spirit,’ though its alternate meaning is ‘duck.’” Nope. Instead, the answer is in Hawaii’s pidgin roots, according to Damien Awai, AnDen’s singer, songwriter and ukulele player. As Bradshaw reported, not only does it mean that “people are always looking for the next thing,” but “also refers to looking forward, to examining possibilities and embracing hope.” In June, Bradshaw eloquently described the slack-key guitar of Henry Kaleialoha Allen (pictured) as “the musical equivalent

16 December 24, 2009

of sea glass, a sound drenched in Malibu rum and day-old sunshine.” Bradshaw was equally poetic about songstress Anuhea, writing that her self-titled debut album “seamlessly folds her influences—reggae, Hawaiian, acoustic folk—into one cohesive, velvety ribbon.” What’s in a name? The Assault Squad Riders—the King Kekaulike High School alumni and hip-hop trio who’ve been “attacking the music scene” together for over ten years—invented their name not to scare people, but as a metaphor “that best described us as being strong and to push forward instead of being pushed around.” To the contrary, Bad Kitty’s sly moniker—though unintentional—seems to be a subconscious slip, as the band members have a regular engagement with Jimmy Mac & The Kool Kats. The “all under 20 years of age” members of The Cities Love You may have their whole lives ahead of them, but they couldn’t waste any more time waiting for the Department of Liquor Control to let them play booze-selling venues, and so shipped off to California after their Music Scene feature. To the city they went, to employ the energy behind, as Bradshaw reported, “their enigmatic name… from what [Jon Belen, lead singer and guitarist] has experienced while traveling in large cities. They seemed welcoming, and more likely to appreciate the sounds he and his band want to generate.”

Reggae-rocker Desmond “Dezman” Yap, like the above referenced youngin’s, was of a tender age when he wrote his first tunes, and has been on my music radar for a long time. Like, all the way back to my middle school days when I was one of those students of Kalama Intermediate who learned and performed the popular “Waiting for your Love,” which Dezman penned as an eighth grader. In her February story, Bradshaw pegged it smartly, writing, “reggae’s popularity in the isles rests in the open wounds still gushing in colonialism’s wake. While much of it focuses on love and island life, reggae music is music of struggle, of raging against hegemony and loss of cultural identity. At the same time, it’s also full of optimism and calls for unity.” Unity was in surprisingly short supply when I did a cover profile of The Throwdowns in August, ahead of their debut album release. The story stirred up a lot of comments at mauitime.com, with the feedback almost equally split between vehement haters and staunch supporters. In the end, though, The Throwdowns unflappable positivity won out, and the band continues to spread its influence, recently as far as lead singer Erin Smith’s (pictured) native Canada. Back to bands with interesting names, there’s The Flying Sheep Problem, which Bradshaw described thusly: “Take Tool. Add Herbie Hancock. Mix in some Morphine and top it off with Coltrane. To the uninitiated, this mix may seem somewhat discordant. But with the right combination of musicians wielding the right kind of vision, it could actually work.” Bradshaw further explored genrebending with the “mysterious” Maui troupe Guerilla Jazz, which “has no regard for genre.” For example, the band goes guitarless, instead relying heavily on Chef Strum, who wows the crowd (when the “band plays out periodically”) by working the uke and effects peddles like the wa. Many good relationships begin with embarrassment, and so it was with my introduction to MauiTime readers. In my very first Music Scene piece, I profiled world-renowned DJ Diplo— who had just disembarked from a plane returning from Japan’s Fuji Rock Fest—and wrote that he had, “unbeknownst to him, pop[ped] my Music Scene interview cherry.” It went unrecognized by me, until the issue went to press, that my ‘ohana would

henceforth be reading what I write. Add a too-quick Facebook post of a link to the candy-colored, sorta-clothed pseudo-porno that is the music video for the track “Pon de Floor,” and my mortification was complete. At least I’ve got a New Year to redeem myself. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/ music24

The Year in Film Skimming off the cream of the cinematic crop

T

o put it plainly: 2009 was a great year for movies. There were so many worthy films to choose from, a handful of gems didn’t quite make the cut (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, District 9, Julie & Julia). On the other hand, you won’t find overrated, buzz-heavy titles (like Precious) here. Some of these movies you’ve heard of and seen; others you’ll hopefully seek out and treasure as much as I do.

comedy with talking dogs, a flying house and a geriatric action hero.

8. Where the Wild Things Are Audiences turned against this moving, emotionally honest, highly stylized children’s fantasy, which will age well but was too outthere for some. For adults and kids ready to deal with something richer than G-Force, Spike Jonze’s inimitable film is a must-see.

9. Inglourious Basterds 1. Public Enemies Michael Mann’s best film since Heat feels like a classic the whole way. It pays tribute to gangster movies both past and present, has a mesmerizing performance by Johnny Depp at its center, underrated support from Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Stephen Lang and Billy Crudup and you-are-there digital cinematography that puts you in the action and highlights how timeless the story of this spotlight-loving crook is. One terrific set piece follows another, in this surprising, exciting and heartbreaking love story, with the year’s most unforgettable climactic scene. This is why we go to the movies.

2. The Young Victoria I was expecting a stiff, boring pageant. What I got was the most thrillingly alive historical drama since Braveheart. Not only will you understand this engrossing story of early royalty—you’ll care about it. Emily Blunt’s performance in the title role is the real deal, but Jim Broadbent brings down the house, playing a literal party crasher.

Quentin Tarantino’s latest love letter to the movies is full of grand scenes that catch you off guard and directorial pizzazz to match his brilliantly offbeat dialogue. The trailer made it look dumb and gory, but it’s actually spellbinding and kind of brilliant.

Public Enemies

10. The Hurt Locker f/x and a stunner of an ending.

4. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Nicolas Cage has finally found his Pulp Fiction in this dark comedy from directing genius and madman Werner Herzog. It parodies the cop movie genre with hilarious and shocking results, with Cage going for broke in his best performance and film since Matchstick Men.

7. Up

This is the return of Kathryn Bigelow, our only female action movie director. Her comeback is a masterwork of suspense and character, an Iraq war movie that avoids political speechifying in favor of whiteknuckle thrills and potent human truths. â–

The first 20 minutes are the year’s most wrenching, touching love story. What follows is a crazy, wildly imaginative

pride in who you are. Morgan Freeman, playing Nelson Mandela, gives an uncanny, enormously affecting performance.

Up

5. Star Trek This year’s Iron Man, both rich in emotion and packed tight with giant thrills. Not a bad performance or dull moment—just the best Trek film in almost two decades.

3. Ink Last year’s you-gotta-see-it DVD sensation was Let the Right One In; this year, it’s Jamin Winan’s incredible, one-of-a-kind fantasy thriller. See it for three knockout action sequences, the clever, homegrown

6. Invictus Clint Eastwood’s genuinely inspiring, true-life sports drama emphasizes the need for racial unity, change after years of a poisoned moral climate and taking

1450 Front Street Lahaina 661-0937

The Hurt Locker 5pm Rated R/130 min. A guy with possibly the worst job in the world—disarming bombs in Iraq—is the centerpiece of this acclaimed action movie, which manages that rarest of feats: combining lots of explosions with interesting characters and an actual plot. Sherlock Holmes 7:30pm Rated PG-13/128 min. Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective gets updated by flashy, frenetic British director Guy Ritchie, which, depending on how much of a purist you are, is either very intriguing or very depressing. Robert Downy, Jr. is Holmes and Jude Law is Watson.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 26 Coraline Noon Rated PG/101 min. A gothic stop-motion yarn about a young girl whose fantasy world turns out to be more sinister than she imagined. Or actually, she is imagining it, so‌[head explodes]. Amelia 2pm Rated PG/111 min. An Oscar-bait biopic chronicling the humble beginnings, rise to fame and (spoiler alert?) mysterious demise of the iconic aviatrix. Hilary Swank stars. Pirate Radio 5pm Rated R/135 min. A crusty crew of rock ‘n rollers stick it to the man via the airwaves from a tanker in the middle of the North Sea. When the man strikes back, the fun begins.

Inglourious Basterds

New York, I Love You 7:30pm Rated R/103 min. A rambling, star-studded love letter to the Big Apple that somehow doesn’t involve Woody Allen.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 27 Precious 2pm Rated R/110 min. A 16-year-old girl twice impregnated by her deadbeat father and abused by her unfeeling mother manages to find redemption in 1980s Harlem. A Single Man 5pm NR/99 min. The riveting tale of a dude who sits on his couch in his underwear eating frosting from the can. Or maybe it’s about a British college professor (Colin Firth) searching for the meaning of life amid the turmoil of the 1960s. One or the other. Me and Orson Welles 7:30pm Rated PG-13/114 min. The titular director flashes charisma and a simmering temper early in his brilliant career. Zac Efron stars, though thankfully not as Welles.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 28 Inglourious Basterds Rated R/153 min.

Quentin Tarantino ditches spell-check and historical accuracy to make a big, bloody, ballsy alternative universe WWII epic.

The Men Who Stare at Goats 5pm Rated R/93 min. A reporter in Iraq hooks up with a dude who claims paranormal abilities, and somewhere along the way a goat gets stared at. George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor star. The Lovely Bones 7:30pm Rated PG-13/139 min. Director Peter Jackson takes a break from orcs and giant apes to tell the story of a young girl who is murdered and returns to watch over her family—and her killer.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29 Where the Wild Things Are 2pm Rated PG/101 min. Spike Jonze grabs the keys to Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s book and takes it for a trippy, oddly touching spin. The Private Lives of Pippa Lee 5pm Rated R/93 min. A 50-year-old suburban wife has some spicy, wild secrets in her past. As they unravel, will she? Creation 7:30pm Rated PG/108 min. A chronicle of the private life and historyaltering discoveries of Charles Darwin. Though, if you ask creationists, it’s really only a theory of a movie. This Week's Picks Dance it Off

Thank You Very Mochi

Friday (December 25), Casanova Italian Bistro, Makawao, 10pm

Tuesday (December 29), Wailuku Hongwanji Mission, 5:30-8pm

Santa delivered (or he didn’t). You’re sick of yearlong niceness and there are but seven nights of un-holiness available before those New Year’s resolutions kick in. Post-party cleanup is the kind best left for morning, especially with the living room still looking like a ball pit of wadded-up wrapping paper. Continue the revelry (or start some anew) with the Kit Cat Club Christmas Cabaret, the steamiest troupe of Santa Baby babes Maui has to offer. The ladies have their playfully luscious show all wrapped up with delightful tunes, and if that’s not enough to tickle your fancy, loosen up with one of Casanova’s signatures (and my favorite), the Velvet Kiss Martini. Joining the Kit Kat Club, after a six-month hiatus from the scene, is P.O.R.T.A.L. (People of Revolutionary Thought and Living if you need it spelled out). Filling their time in the shadows by managing international Internet success and adding more funk to their already otherworldly dance beats, P.O.R.T.A.L. comes as ready to play as you should come ready to dance. And with all that turkey lurking in your belly since late November, dancing is probably a good idea. $7, 572-0220

About six years after the Meiji Restoriation in 1867 (end of the Tokugawa Shogunate), Japan made the switch from a calendar based on the Chinese lunar calendar to the Gregorian one. Though for nearly 140 years the celebrations have been on a slightly different date, the New Year’s traditions of Japan are no less steeped in rich tradition. One particularly notable food-festivity pertains to the glutinous goodness that is mochi. On Tuesday, master mochi (OK, you won’t actually master this most excellent dessert, but you’ll get a most excellent overview) with the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui, which extends an invitation to the public to attend their quarterly meeting. Postmeeting is “a presentation of Japanese traditions observed during New Year,” and a makeyour-own kadomatsu or “gate pine” decoration. Plus, again, everyone will learn to make mochi. A light dinner will be served along with a mochi sampling, which includes ozoni (soup containing mochi cakes) and various mochi dishes such as fried and kinako (soybean flour based). Additionally, “for those adventurous to try,” experience traditional mochi pounding, using huge wooden mallets in a heavy usu bowl. Because the only thing more dangerous than eating mochi is making it. RSVP required. $5-$10, 283-9999

Does That Sparkle With You?

Willie Good

Thursday (December 31), Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, 9:15pm-12:15am

Thursday (December 31), Charley’s, Paia, 10pm-1:30am

The 7th century Chinese get all the credit for fireworks. Granted, they discovered them, developed them and perfected them, but 7th century Byzantine Greeks also had a hand in creating one of our most beloved combustible traditions—and to their credit, put it in our hands. That flickering little stick we know and love as the “sparkler” sees its earliest origins from the wartime implement “Greek fire.” So closely guarded a secret were its exact components, that the since-lost specifics of the concoction remains a matter of speculation. Inextinguishable by water, “Greek fire” was particularly useful in naval battle. Fortunately, today, should your sparkler get out of hand, tossing it into a bucket of H2O does the trick. Really, it doesn’t take much. But how about sparklers poolside? Should something go wrong you know you’re safe. And image how divine the dancing reflections of delicate fire! This year, as you count down to midnight, hearken back to the imagery of the sparkler’s earliest origins (replacing combat with swank—there’s music, bubbly, choco-dipped fresas, party favors…) at the Poolside Sparklers and S’Mores Party at Umalu. Oh, and another thing: S’MORES. $35-$45, 661-2134

This will be Willie Nelson’s 77th New Year—and he’s lookin’ to spend it with you. And where else on Maui but at this favorite North Shore hub (of which he is part-owner), Charley’s? We all know about Charley’s and we certainly all know about Willie, so let’s instead learn a little more about (and perhaps gain from it a little resolution inspiration) Willie’s activism: Partnering with the Animal Welfare Institute, he’s campaigned in support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. In a letter to congress (view it on his MySpace page), he says, “horses should not be killed at one of the three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the United States so diners abroad can feast on their flesh.” Whoa. Word. Speaking of which (sort of), before you start and after you break your fit-and-trim resolve, indulge in Ben & Jerry’s “Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream,” proceeds benefiting Farm Aid. It’s a flavor I found out about from The Colbert Report, as “The Word” man himself boasts his own charity benefiting cold stuff called “AmeriCone Dream.” You know what’s dreamy and goes well with aforementioned cold and creamy? Pakalolo. Willie co-chairs the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which in September wrapped it’s 38th annual convention held in San Francisco; theme: “Yes We Can-nabis.” $75, 579-9453

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Being absolutely present and engaged with each moment is generally the way to go. However, sometimes it’s best for you and all concerned if you can take a step back from the intensity of the present. Ask yourself, “How will I feel about this in ten years?” Then channel your decade-older self and speak from his/her perspective. People might think you’re crazy because you’re laughing instead of furious, or casual instead of intense. But coming from that place will generate a more positive situation that you can actually be proud of in ten years, instead of embarrassed by.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Why get pissed off if laughing it off is an option? What does diving into anger really get you? Nine times out of ten, addressing an unpleasant situation with a joke and a smile will reap more satisfactory results than becoming bitchy or enraged. Try to keep negative emotions in check this week. Since little good (and probably a bunch of bad) would come of expressing them, what’s the point? Find the funny in the situation (even if it’s at your own expense) and have a bit of fun. The alternative is giving yourself an ulcer about it—pretty lame.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Don’t whisper your desires when you could shout them exuberantly for all to hear. There’s no need to be the least bit shy about what you want. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, this is the season of giving, right? Don’t take the risk that someone might not hear, or may misunderstand, what you’re asking for. Of course, for you, figuring out precisely what you want is probably the biggest challenge, but once you do: don’t mumble. Be loud and clear so that no one can say later, “Really? You should have just said so!”

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Connections matter. You might think having talent, integrity, or luck is enough. In an ideal world, they would be, but frequently who you know counts for more. Don’t be so idealistic and naïve that you hold yourself back. Cultivate your talent and integrity, by all means—but also get out there and meet the people who could help you get ahead. I wish simply deserving something was always enough to get it for you, but don’t take any chances. There’s no need to be sneaky or immoral here—just remember that there’s simply nothing wrong with putting yourself out there and asking people to help you get ahead. Then keep asking until you find someone who will.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Although it seems like the holidays should be a time of unmitigated fun and delight, in actuality for most people they’re tremendous sources of stress and misery. These obligatory celebrations, although certainly not all bad, have enough unpleasant elements that they can feel more like an ordeal to endure rather than an occasion to enjoy. That, naturally, should be avoided. Do what you can to make your holiday plans work for you, not against you. Is there a way you can come out the other side of the holidays happier than you are right now? Work towards manifesting that.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You haven’t always done that well with New Year’s resolutions. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop making them. Generally, whenever you set positive intentions for yourself, something good comes of them, even if you have trouble following through long-term. If your resolution is to go to the gym three times a week in 2010, and you only make it three weeks in before it breaks down, that’s still nine more workouts than you would have done without that resolution. Of course, you should try your best to follow through, but even partially fulfilling your goals will be good, so please do set some for yourself.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Stop worrying. Life is risky and there’s simply no getting around it. You can’t erect an impenetrable forcefield around yourself or embrace a solitary lifestyle on a remote island. Even if you could, you wouldn’t want to; it’d suck, and you’d find new, even more ridiculous things to feel anxious about. Accept that actually living your life involves a certain degree of danger—emotional and otherwise—and quit fretting so much about it. Your undue concern is really salting your own game and keeping you from many of the things that would serve as helpful distractions from life’s necessary dangers—like having fun.

HowerPhotography.com

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) It’s like someone wrote your top twenty priorities on scraps of paper, and compiled a new list based on a random drawing. Somehow, they’ve gotten all out of order. You’ve started caring about shit that really doesn’t matter, and forgetting stuff that ultimately is more important to you, even if it’s not on your mind at the moment. This week is a good one to reassess where you’re putting your energies and decide if that’s the best distribution of your time and care. If it’s not, the new year is a great chance to sort out a better path (or set of paths) for you to pursue in the coming months.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) There are at least seventy-three good reasons to do something, and you’ve taken the time to painstakingly list them all. Frequently, your obsessive list-making is actually just a procrastination tool. Rationally, you know you could have completed this dreaded task ten times over by now. And yet here we are. It’s time to ask yourself why. Make a new list—this time, not of reasons you should get to it, but reasons why you shouldn’t. Once you’ve figured out why you won’t or can’t do this thing, make another list—brainstorming ways to get out of it. Once you come up with one that works, you should have no trouble putting it immediately into action; no procrastination necessary.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) It’s so easy to be distracted by shiny things (or pretty smiles or nice asses), and lose track of what really makes you happy. Sure, all that stuff will thrill you for a moment or three, but what use is it if it costs you the things that will give you joy for years? Make sure those things, even if they’re not as sparkly and fresh as the many distractions you’re surrounded by, stay at the forefront of your mind this week, lest they give you this bum deal: trading off years of contentment for a few moments of giddy delight.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Just be yourself. You don’t need to be some exaggerated, extreme-embracing version of yourself. What’s most important here is that you come off as genuine and honest, not fascinatingly out there. Truth be told, most people are already going to find you pretty freaky. Accentuating your extremes is much more likely to scare them off than draw them in. Ultimately, some people will be turned off by you, but as long as you’re forthright, real, and present, more will be interested than repulsed. Of course, if you’re more keen to frighten than befriend someone, undue focus on your eccentricities will be sure to do the trick.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) While it might be exhilarating to go motorcycle riding without a helmet, it’s also incredibly reckless. I hope you’re past that kind of obvious stupidity. How about the less obvious kind, though? You’re treading dangerously close to territory that’s nearly as foolhardy as naked biking in fresh snow; even though it doesn’t feel as hazardous, it’s still pretty dumb. Take a good hard look at what you’ve been up to (and what you’re thinking about getting up to). I’m not saying don’t do it—just don’t be stupid about it. There’s a way to explore most of what you’re interested in without being treacherously irresponsible; find that.
