Pot Reports & Lost Patients PHOTO COURTESY OF GRAPHICSHUNT.COM
HYPER LOCAL Given the litany of issues facing Maui Nui, you’d think the Mayor would have more important things to talk about than the Super Bowl. You’d be wrong. In fact, for the first 500-plus words of her 4,000word State of the County address, Tavares never uttered the word “Maui.” She said “Saints” nine times and “Colts” twice, and offered an endorsement of the onside kick (in case you wondered where she stood on that pressing matter). OK, OK, so the point was to set up the Saints as a metaphor for Maui (get it?!), and to shoehorn in applause lines about “build[ing] on your success” and “stay[ing] in the game.” Problem is, that’s basically all we got. Other than imploring the state to let the counties keep their share of the Transient Accommodations Tax, the Mayor’s remarks contained few concrete ideas. Rhetorical questions? Check. Multiple callbacks to the tortured football analogy? Naturally. The bold assertion that “Maui County is absolutely the best!” You bet. Look, I get the idea: rousing speeches can lift spirits; Barack Obama has built much of his political career on that premise. But there comes a time when people need to be fed policy instead of platitudes, whether they like it or not. That’s leadership….
LOCAL This week, the Medical Cannabis Working Group (MCWG) submitted a report on Hawaii’s medical marijuana system. But wait, you ask, didn’t Gov. Lingle kill that idea last year after it was approved by the legislature? Yes, but MCWG—a coalition of physicians, patients and advocacy groups—went
ahead and did it anyway. Their conclusion? “Hawaii’s medical marijuana program is in need of very significant improvements.” OK, everyone knows that. What kind of improvements? The report recommends four key actions: “create a distribution system so that patients do not need to resort to the black market to obtain their medicine”; “increase the allowable number of plants and the amount of usable cannabis to ensure that patients have an adequate supply of their medicine”; “allow caregivers to care for at least five patients to ensure that patients are assured of an adequate supply and a competent caregiver”; and “transfer medical marijuana program oversight from the Department of Public Safety—a law enforcement agency—to the Department of Health.” Sounds reasonable. Which means, of course, none of it will happen ’til we get a new Governor…. “How much do you agree or disagree that overall, tourism has brought more benefits than problems to the state?” The Hawaii Tourism Authority posed that loaded question in its 2009
Resident Sentiment Survey, the results of which were released last week. Seventyeight percent of respondents agreed, 21 percent disagreed and the other 1 percent have somehow managed not to form an opinion. That’s a slight shift compared to 2007, when 71 percent agreed, 22 percent disagreed and a full 7 percent “didn’t know.” The survey—conducted by Honolulubased OmniTrak Group Inc.—cautions that “support of tourism is higher in bad times” and that “this may be a high water mark.” So when the tourists stay home, we think they bring benefits, but when they show up, not as much…. If you happen to live near the Hawaii state hospital on Oahu or know someone who does, the opening paragraph of SB2919 will not help you sleep at night: “The legislature finds that the Hawaii state hospital has suffered budget cuts and reductions in security positions, leaving the hospital vulnerable to escapes and security risks. Averaging six escapes a year and with numerous assaults upon staff, the high occupancy at the hospital, coupled with the budget cuts and security reductions, have compromised and jeopardized the safety of the workers and patients at the facility, as well as the community and surrounding neighborhood.” As recently as December, a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a child escaped from the psychiatric facility by climbing over a chainlink fence; he remains at large. On February 15, Department of Public Safety (DPS) Deputy Director Tommy Johnson told the Honolulu Advertiser that 17 security guards were laid off statewide in December and that “most of those” were at the state hospital. If SB2919 passes (as of this writing it was in the hands of the Ways and

Means Committee), the hospital could get some of its guards back. That doesn’t address the underlying question: why did the firings happen in the first place? Similar to last year’s ag inspector layoffs, this looks like a case of cutting past the fat and into the bone….
NOT LOCAL The headline in the February 12 Advertiser declared “Hawaii-based Marines gearing up for major assault in Afghanistan.” Almost simultaneously, a dispatch from the National Priorities Project (NPP) landed in my inbox. NPP, for those unfamiliar, keeps track of defense spending, and breaks down tax contributions by region. (See for yourself at nationalpriorities.org.) Hawaii’s tab for the decade-old war in Afghanistan is $966.8 million. According to NPP, that money could have built 3,027 affordable housing units, or paid the annual salary of 17,878 elementary school teachers, or funded 213,790 university scholarships, or provided health care to 322,647 people for one year, or a lot of other things most of us can agree are good. I don’t get it. We’re engaged in a big national debate about government waste, and yet our vast military spending—which accounts for somewhere between one-quarter and one-half of the federal budget, depending on how you calculate it—is rarely part of the conversation. Then I remember that confused old lady at the McCain/Palin rally who said she was afraid of Obama because “he’s an Arab” and I do get it. And I feel sad. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut32

Hidden Costs Sites like Expedia and Priceline promise the lowest rates. But they may actually be making travel more expensive
I
n the last year, the major online travel sites have all dramatically changed the way they work. Unfortunately this change is having a very negative effect on the local economy, deeply cutting into our already-shaky hotels and perhaps affecting their long-term viability. This is not good for Maui, and you should know about it. Before I can explain, you need to know how these online travel sites—Priceline, Expedia, Orbitz, Hotels.com, Tavelocity— really work. How is it they’re able to offer the lowest prices? Over the years, a number of urban myths have surfaced. One of the most common is that the companies buy blocks of airline seats or hotel rooms at a discount and resell them, which isn’t true. Another is that they sell last-minute inventory at a discount, which isn’t really true either. The method they use is a good, oldfashioned contract. If you want to be listed on their site, you have to contractually agree to offer them the lowest price available. Simple, really. The major sites have commanding control of the travel market; a hotel that doesn’t play along can have its listing dropped, which, when you need to fill rooms daily, leaves you with little negotiating leverage. This was a system that worked for years. If you were a hotel, the fee you agreed to pay was a 5-10 percent commission. Very reasonable, actually. For that cost you received a steady stream of reservations, all with little marketing effort (and expense) of your own. Unfortunately, over the last two years, these sites have established a
second tier of service, requiring a 30 percent commission. Oh, you can still play in the 10 percent club, but you’ll be listed below those paying the 30 percent commission, effectively pushing your hotel many pages
for $100 anymore with a 10 percent commission. They need to sell it for $128.57. When they sell the room at that rate, they immediately give 30 percent (or $38.57) to Priceline, Travelocity, etc.,
Hotels are already thin-margin enterprises—they’re not very profitable even when well run. downward. Only the most tenacious, thorough consumers will ever see your listing, and they probably won’t think much of it due to its poor placement. The value of that higher listing is everything in this business. Should a local hotel manager not agree, they’ll immediately lose much of their sales through these sites. The problem is, hotels are thin-margin enterprises to begin with—they’re not very profitable even when run well. To give up 10 percent of their gross revenue is workable, but 30 percent? That level eats up the profit and basically starts selling rooms at a loss. So what’s a hotel manager to do? Simple, raise prices. If they need to net $90 for a room, they can’t sell it
and keep $90 to cover their operating costs. For those paying attention, this also increases the room tax on that stay, now 12.4166% in Hawaii. Remember, under that same contract they’re not allowed to offer lower prices online, so even if you go directly to a hotel Web site, you get the same price. (They can, however, offer a lower price if you call, which some do, but most won’t simply due to the complexity of offering different rates.) The timing of this change couldn’t have been worse. Just as we’re in the middle of a protracted economic downturn, these marketing monopolies start pushing their vendor base hard. What’s a good consumer to do? Boycott them, maybe? Don’t know. Something’s got to give, or the sites promising cheap travel will have made it much more expensive in the long run. ■
UPDATES
I
n December, we told you about a standoff between Jordan Hart—son of Mayoral hopeful Chris Hart—who wanted to build a pub at the corner of Vineyard and Central in Wailuku (aka Hart’s Corner), and a group of neighbors who didn’t think that was such a hot idea. Hart said the pub would bolster the town’s revitalization effort; neighbors said it would snarl traffic and create a nuisance. At the February 10 Liquor Commission hearing, Hart’s application was denied. LC Watch wasn’t able to attend, but Director Frank Silva said a group of neighbors showed up to speak out against the pub—as they did at the December 9 hearing—with even more sending in written testimony. In all, Silva said, they got “over 100 protests.” To trigger an automatic denial, more than 50 percent of residents within 500 feet of the proposed pub would have had to oppose it. Silva said the number was slightly less than that, somewhere around 48 percent. “It didn’t meet the requirement, but it was quite a bit,” he said. Enough, apparently, to sway the Commission.

n other news: Recently, Maui Dance Advocates gave us a heads up about HB2818, a bill introduced on the group’s behalf by Representatives Joe Bertram, Mele Carroll, Faye Hanohano and Cynthia Thielen that would force the LC to define “dancing.” Anyone who’s followed this story understands the significance; anyone who hasn’t can just rent Footloose. As of February 11, the bill had passed through the Economic Revitalization, Business & Military Affairs Committee and was headed for the Consumer Protection & Commerce and Judiciary Committees. Which is a long-winded way of saying it’s not dead yet. - Jacob Shafer

THE WHITE STUFF (1) April Gaede, who four years ago guided her teenage daughters, Lynx and Lamb (performing as “Prussian Blue), to a brief music career singing neo-Nazi songs, announced a new project recently on the white nationalist Web site stormfront.org. She offers a no-fee matchmaking service to fertile Aryans, hoping to encourage marriage and baby-making—to help white people keep up with rapidly procreating minorities. (2) Don “Moose Lewis announced plans in January for a 12-city pro basketball league composed only of white players (natural-born U.S. citizens, whose parents are both Caucasian). Lewis denied any “racism, explaining to the Augusta Chronicle that whites simply like “fundamental basketball and not “street ball BUZZARD KILL As vultures approach extinction in South Africa, they grow in value among local “traditional communities for their magical abilities. Specks of a vulture’s brain, sprinkled on mud and smoked, can supposedly ward off evil and bring winning lottery numbers. One Johannesburg vendor told Agence France-Presse in December that the specks even work when daubed on dogs’ noses, enabling them to extend their already formidable scenting power.
THE LORD GIVETH‌ Televangelist Rod Parsley informed his flock in December that he urgently needed several million dollars because of financial problems attributed directly to Satan. According to a report in the Columbus Dispatch, Parsley’s World Harvest Church was facing a $3 million deficit for the quarter ending in December after earlier in the year paying $3.1 million to settle a lawsuit over its daycare center’s having too brutally spanked a boy. Wrote Parsley, “Will you help me take back what the devil stole?â€?
IF YOU DON’T CLEAN YOUR ROOM, THE GOLDFISH IS NEXT In January, as punishment for her 12-year-old son’s bad grade in school, a Warm Springs, Ga., mother allegedly forced the boy to club his pet hamster to death with a hammer. Lynn
Middlebrooks Geter, 38, was arrested after the kid told his teacher, who called the state children’s services agency.
NAKED AMBITION Unless Stephen Gough, 50, changes his mind about wearing pants, he risks spending the rest of his life behind bars, according to a January ruling of Scotland’s Perth Sheriff Court. Gough, Britain’s “naked rambler, is a freelance nudist who for years has roamed the United Kingdom countryside, interrupted by numerous jail stints for violating public decency. He was released from Perth Prison in December after his latest stay, but seconds later shucked his clothes and was re-arrested. (In his most recent trial, Gough acted as his own lawyer and somehow persuaded an overly fair judge to let him be naked in court.)
CHOCOLATE, CHAMPAGNE, BATHROOM SEX A Toronto restaurant, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, announced that its Valentine’s Day promotion this year would not just be a romantic dinner but would also include an invitation for couples to have sex in the restrooms. Toronto Public Health officials appeared unconcerned, as long as there was no sex in food-preparation areas and as long as the restrooms were clean. “Bodily fluids were not a concern, said one health official, because after all, that’s what restrooms are for.

The guy cheated on his wife while she had cancer, had a lovechild with his mistress, then bribed his friend to claim the kid was his! I think that tops every scandal on your list. Only a dick with spare time would try to make people lose their jobs in a letter to the boss during a recession. Screw you. I work hard. I care about what I do, I value my co-workers and go home knowing I have put in an honest day’s work. I have three kids, and they eat the food that my job pays for. For weeks, many people have been asking us “What’s up with the CandleLight Cafe & Cinema?” Simply put, in its holiday season FirstLight at the MACC and its under-the-stars, annual, early summer celebration of cinema in Wailea in June (16-20, 2010) incarnations, the Festival is alive and well. The weekly CandleLight Cafe & Cinema, however, remains in a state of suspended animation while the Festival staff works diligently to bring it back to life as soon as possible. We know that thousands of Mauians and island visitors love the Festival. We are truly appreciative and thankful that many of you have shared your aloha with us for years. We love what we do and want to continue to be here for all of you. The Festival has always been about building community through cinema. Despite Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Twitter and Facebook’s popularity, we still believe that leaving your “cave” and basking in the glow of great stories told around a cinematic “campfire”

THE ART OF PLAY: BY SARA TEKULA
Colorful, larger-than-life fuzzy cupcakes on wheels, powered by humans on bikes. An enormous, rideable LED- and propane-lit dragonfly with mechanical controls like those on a forklift. A replica of an oil derrick, 200 feet tall, rigged with a record-setting amount of jet fuel exploding into a mushroom cloud above you. A “psychic taxi cab” ride that takes you not to your chosen destination, but where you are “meant to go.” A 30foot pedal-powered strobe-lit zoetrope that spins around you, depicting monkeys swinging in trees being fed apples by snakes. A giant dragon sculpture made entirely of discarded furniture found on the streets of Brooklyn. This is my kind of art—playful, big Burning Man art—and until recently, I could only find it in the middle of the remote Nevada desert, in a temporary city that only exists one week out of the year. Now I can find it on Maui. And so can you. First, a little background in case you haven’t heard of Burning Man. The Burning Man festival is entering its 24th year in 2010, and is expected to be larger than ever. Started in 1986 by radical arts supporter Larry Harvey, Burning Man began as a small bonfire gathering on a beach in Northern California and has grown into a massive pilgrimage that

brings tens of thousands of people to a remote part of the Nevada desert. Imagine wandering an enormous, barren landscape that has been transformed into a tent and RV city. Now imagine that this city is filled with some of the most intelligent, radically open-minded, generous, self-reliant humans you’ll find anywhere. These humans are constantly giving you things—food, drink, shelter, friendship—all for free with no strings attached, and you are giving these things to others. Then, do away with any commercial activity—nothing is bought or sold. Next, realize that you are free to play there for an entire week. Everywhere you look, you see works of art and radical performances (music, dance, etc.), and it’s all a stimulating two-way conversation. The event is really a work of art in itself, a composite of the gifts that each person has brought to the table. Everything is begging for exactly what only you can uniquely provide—your own specific brand of participation and interaction. Then, after a week of participating, you go home, everything is gone, and the desert “playa” is clean and empty again. This is the wild, fleeting nature of Burning Man, and I ain’t afraid to admit that I love it. Why? Because it is the antithesis of—and perhaps the antidote to—a sterile, stuffy, institutionalized mainstream art culture that
GOING STRAIGHT TO THE CREATIVE SOURCE
believes art belongs on white walls, in quiet enclosed spaces with doors that lock, and demands that—once inside—you view art from a safe distance. It wants a sophisticated, elite audience of spectators that fits in a tidy box. It often has to do with money and status and an “us and them” mindset. While it can feel familiar and safe for many, it’s just not my style to be an outsider. It seems to me that creators and performers today are drawn more and more to collaboration amongst a free and diverse community without walls and strict boundaries. They want to celebrate and enjoy art that has been produced in and created for casual groups, art that is activated by participants who are invited to touch it, get personal with it, find themselves in the art—and thinking outside of the box. Over the years, the impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a distinct culture has formed around it. Experienced “burners” want it to last longer than a week, and want to share the ethic and ideas with their communities, so they are banding together nationwide and putting on their own localized events, in an attempt to rekindle that magic that is possible when creativity and freedom collide. The Source Interactive Arts Festival is an attempt to re-create
this experience on Maui. Burning Man-inspired, it’s still decidedly islandstyle, and it celebrates its third annual gathering this weekend. While researching for this article, I quickly realized that there are so many ideas and contributions that come together for an event of this magnitude that it would be impossible to include them all. To get to the bottom of things, I decided to zero in on one artist—a tall, bright-eyed fellow named Gabe Mott—who has been involved in organizing the festival from the beginning, and who embodies the idea of interactive art. He believes that when people interact with art, they begin to see themselves as artists. This is a core part of the Source philosophy: that everyone has the capacity to be an artist. When Gabe describes his latest additions to “A Color Box” (an evolving art installation he’s displaying at Source, see sidebar), his eyes widen and tiny beams of light shoot out of them. I’m not completely surprised at the sight of this, since he’s the kind of artist who plays with light and color on the regular. However, when he tells me that for this year’s project he’ll be hiding infrared LED controls into the third eyes of stuffed animals which allows viewers—by way of a reverse-engineered Nintendo Wii System—to control the colors projected inside this box, light shoots out of my own eyeballs. You’re doing what?!
“TO ME, SOURCE IS A GIANT PUZZLE,” SAYS VOLUNTEER ORGANIZER AMINA ABDUSSAMAD. “WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS PUZZLE WILL LOOK LIKE IN THE END, AND THAT I THINK IS THE POINT.”
Gabe’s second life-size “immersive color room” project, scheduled to be unveiled at this weekend’s festival, is the culmination of everything he’s been working on and researching for several years. He is a protege of life-long Maui resident and “color guru” Dick Nelson, who is one of the island’s most respected artists and art teachers. Gabe also serves as the curator, or Art Director, for Source, which has him holding several pre-Source artist brainstorm sessions (called “ArtStorms”), and administering an artist grant program that offers seed funds for some of the proposed projects. With a smile he shares: “My job is to continually say yes to people, to their projects and ideas, to their plans, and then eventually to help artists place their art on site at the event.” All forms of artistic expression are welcome at Source: visual arts, tiki carving, performance art, music, fire, the healing arts, the presentation of new ideas, even culinary arts—all of which are interactive and engage the crowd. “Art really allows a solution,” says Gabe. “We need to go beyond festivity and get engaged.” According to the Source project’s founder, Ben Holt, the festival is “four days of recess for adults” (children are welcome too—Source is a family-friendly event). Ben is especially proud of the food provided at Source. The entry fee buys

Modeled closely after Burning Man, Ben has had a long history of participating Source’s Web site asks Maui residents in gatherings of varying shapes and sizes to “share the same ‘gift economy’ ethos around the globe. To them, volunteering is a form of Festivalgoers in the hundreds are expected to
participation and is not associated with any material reward, like free tickets or backstage access (as is often the case with other mainstream festivals). Source is also a “leave no trace” event (not one piece of trash is left behind). The organizers and attendees are staunchly ecoconscious and take care of the property as if it’s their own, even making improvements to the YMCA’s signage, structures, landscape and interiors in coordination with the caretakers of the grounds. “To me, Source is a giant puzzle,” says Amina Abdussamad, head organizer of VolunTribe. “Each of us is a piece of that puzzle and each of us brings an art to share. It is a place where my art—the art of organizing and gathering people—is appreciated and celebrated. We have no idea what this puzzle will look like in the end and that I think is the point. We each come with our piece and at the end we see what we created. You really can’t be much more interactive than that.” Source is a real opportunity for freedom of expression, my favorite freedom. It removes boundaries between “performer” and “audience.” There is no “us” and “them.” It’s quite like a model of the perfect world, if you ask me. And I want to go to there. ■

THE CAST & CREW
SOURCE ARTS ETHOS Ben Holt, Founder, Sourcemaui.com “We declare that art is powerful and important. We also believe that everyone is creative and has the capacity to be an artist. The experience at SOURCE is created entirely by the attendees. In other words, no entertainment is “hired,” and yet the festival is filled with paintings, stilt walkers, healers, nature art, interactive sculptures, DJs, VJs, musicians and performance.”
THE VOLUNTRIBE Amina Abdussamad, lead organizer Voluntribe.wordpress.com The “VolunTribe” is a group of volunteer teams, each focused on a certain area of the festival. This includes trained medics, builders, clean-up crew, a fire department, a welcoming committee, a team of cooks, folks who set up stages for music and performance, parking attendants, a team of stagehands and theater workers and watchful eyes that help provide the perfect conditions for creativity in an environment that is safe and well-organized. EXPERIMENTATION Cudra Clover Cudraclover.com Cudra will present a “life-size” counterrotating Merkaba. The word “Merkaba” means “chariot of light” in ancient Judaic mysticism. It is the divine light vehicle allegedly used by ascended masters to connect with and reach those in tune with the higher realms. In modern esoteric teachings, it is taught that the Merkaba is an inter-dimensional vehicle consisting of two equally sized, interlocked tetrahedra of light with a common center, where one tetrahedron points up and the other down. According to mystics, this field of energy exists around every living creature. This project allows people—one at a time—to sit inside and experience the moving sacred geometry that exists around them. Says Cudra, “Who knows? Maybe it will be a star gate!” PRESENTATION Johnny Matthews “Waterfall Scrim” “Last year, I was approached by local artist Cudra Clover to try to reproduce the effect of a giant water projection screen, made using a peacock tail-shaped spray of water,” says Matthews. “I build water systems on Maui and have the necessary tools and am akamai, so I said ‘yes, let’s do it.’ Water is a beautiful and dazzling medium for projection, a fact realized and then engineered by Scott Ritt of Mirage Waterworks. I researched the idea, and found a smaller flat-screen version [that] I could actually build. I customfabricated everything, borrowed a pump and a projector, and I gotta tell you now, it was ‘the coolest art installation at Source’ to quote nearly everyone who saw it. This year I am building two screens. The details are secret, but I guarantee an awesome show by some of the best visual artists on Maui.” INFORMATION/MOTIVATION Amanda Wilson, Host “Off the Grid 3.0” Franklin Symposium “Franklin is the innovation of information motivation,” explains Amanda. “In other words, inspiration.” Those involved in “the Franklin” (named for noted brainstormer Benjamin Franklin) meet several times a year, simultaneously recognizing the potential of sharing information, projects and people who turn them on, get them excited, and, well, inspired. Each “lecturer” presents their research or specialized experiences with the group while orbiting around a central idea. Generally, everyone invited has created a presentation and shares it with the others. It’s basically a grown-up show and tell, and there’s going to be a big one at Source this year.
IN-FLIGHT VIDEO Mark Matthews, Videographer/Editor Mouthhole.com As each festivalgoer arrives at the event, they will be asked to watch a light and fun “in-flight video” style orientation film— about three minutes in length—which orients each person with the vibe of the festival. Mark also has created a 20-minute documentary about Source, and will be shooting more video at this year’s event. RITUAL Mavis Muller Mavismullerart.com Mavis hails from Alaska, and this is the third year she is creating art for Source. Her work is called “Cheers, Chalice,” an eight-basket sculpture utilizing locally gathered natural materials such as mulberry, hibiscus, grass and palm. Like past years, the sculpture will have an interactive mission that connects communities that are separated by distance. All are invited to decorate the outside of the basket with natural embellishments, flowers and written sentiments of inspiration. Personal sentiments may be tucked inside, and ultimately the sculpture will burn, releasing all the heartfelt sentiments. PERCEPTION Gabe Mott Acolorbox.com This “out of the box” art project actually is a box that you get inside of. “A Color Box” is a free-standing room ten feet wide and eight-feet high. Using a computer, a projector, a Wii game system and a screen, a person walking into the room will be able to interact with a color grid projected on the screen. By using several stuffed animals with LED lights coming from their third eyes, a person can use the stuffed animal much like a computer mouse to “touch” a color swatch projected onto the box. Interacting with the color swatches teaches the participant about complimentary colors and helps them see color relationships in a new way. THEATER Rachel Deboer Writer/Director, “Birth of Tiki” Thebirthoftiki.wordpress.com This is a theatrical art performance fusing ancient Hawaiian mythology with modernday theatrical and art trends through the use of black-light body painting and costumery. Featured performers include, among others, Brendan Lokahi Sylva (of local band The Troublemakers) and Ellen Petersen (of Maui Slam). Rachel has trained more than ten new body painters to help with the show—each character requires approximately six hours of intricate painting. Add to this elaborate, glowing props that give the appearance of objects floating through the air. “Birth of Tiki is my attempt to connect my 25 years of theater experience and my surrealist theater background in Los Angeles and Burning Man and connect it to Hawaiian mythology in a way no one has seen before, ever,” says Rachel. “I feel that black light is a medium of dreams, and it shows people the subconscious in a really beautiful, magical way. I think body painting is like carving the essences of the akua, or gods…combining these together with the theme of mythology is really powerful.”
PYROMANIA Bryan Axtell, fire performer Fire Dance Performances and Installations Source is a magnet for performers, particularly those who play with fire. Bryan is one of the leaders of Merkabah Fire Productions, a Maui-based fire performance troupe that plays a pivotal role in several Source performances. This year, Bryan will be coordinating fire safety at Source for all things ablaze: three major choreographed “fire shows,” art installations that incorporate open flame, a “fire garden,” the burning of “Logo Fuego” (a life-size metal fire sculpture of the Source logo), the burning of Mavis’s “Cheers Chalice,” and the burning of a beautiful Temple at the end of the event. There are even flamethrowers involved! To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/feature32

Something for the Keiki Romantic dining it ain’t, but a new family restaurant in Kihei offers big fun for kids and good grinds, too Sharky’s Family Fun Center 41 E. Lipoa St., Kihei 874-5115
T
he whole romantic Valentine’s Day dinner scene changes when you have kids. Fine dining is not an option with a rambunctious four year old. So this year, I took the path of least resistance and found a restaurant the kids would love and invited some friends with children to come along and have some fun. Putting romance on the backburner, I headed over to the new Kihei restaurant, Sharky’s Family Fun Center. Sharky’s—which goes past family-friendly and is actually designed specifically with children in mind— is the brainchild of Maui resident Craig Snyder. There are wall murals, games like Dance, Dance Revolution, Skee-Ball and air hockey, and a giant pirate ship that kids can climb into (but parents, sadly, cannot). There’s also a video gaming room and a ticket redemption zone where keiki can claim prizes. When we arrive, our group is seated at the giant picnic bench-style table, carved from a log. It’s a little difficult to negotiate the benches, but once I’m settled in the seating’s comfortable. The dining room has lots of other, regular-size tables to accommodate families as well. Our server brings us a pitcher of water and cups and suggests the jumbo buffalo wings ($10.95) as a starter. I go for it. The wings come in several different flavors: teriyaki, mild, hot or shark bite. Owner Craig Snyder explains “shark bite” is his personal favorite, but we wimp out and go for the hot,
and we aren’t disappointed. The crunchy skin and juicy meat were appropriately spicy and saucy, and the bleu cheese dressing provides a classic complement. The little ones grabbed the carrot sticks and celery, and the dads barely got a taste. Sharky’s menu doesn’t have a kids’ section. Rather, the concept is food everyone can enjoy. French fries ($4.95) and cheese bread grace the list of appetizers, while each pasta option has a small size, including a pasta and butter dish ($3.95). Among the sandwiches you can order peanut butter and jelly ($4.95) served with fruit cocktail. We won’t tell the kids but there are some items that really were meant for adults, like the signature stuffed burgers ($10.95). We ordered one with
Swiss, mushroom and jalapenos. You know that the patty is homemade because it just got stuffed to your specifications. The burger is huge and was oozing with the cheese and mushrooms. We also ordered the large pizza ($15.99 with sauce and five toppings of your choice). Sauce options include tomato, pesto, Alfredo, garlic oil or BBQ. We went the traditional route with a half pepperoni and mushroom and half pineapple and ham. The large comes out in a rectangular pan, like a cookie sheet, and feeds a lot of people. Our group—from young to old—gave the pizza a thumbs-up, as did our neighbors who ordered the massive family size. In all, the evening was smooth, with the kids loving the pirate ship and gaming area,
Can you handle “shark bite” hot? scooping up tickets by the handful and generally having a terrific time. Sharky’s is working on getting a liquor license and plans to serve beer in the future, good news for adults trading in date night for kid night. In the meantime, the food and fun make for a worthwhile package—and I plan to come back just for more buffalo wings. ■

oor Lawrence Talbot, a Shakespearean actor (played by Benicio Del Toro) who, in the course of a few days, learns that his brother has been torn to shreds, the killer is still at large and a savage monster has been spotted roaming the countryside. Oh, and whenever the moon is full, Talbot begins to feel, uh, wolfish. This remake of the original 1941 classic had a lot of trouble getting into theaters, with a new director, a fired then re-hired composer, altered creature concepts and re-shoots pushing the release date back for months. Despite all that, the film is mostly fun but ultimately weighed down by a fatal flaw: the miscast lead actor. Del Toro is a gifted actor and I was optimistic about him playing the lead in a lavish studio film but, despite being one of the movie’s producers, he’s dull and appears disengaged. His character is a celebrated

stage actor, yet his demeanor suggests a morose undertaker. Perhaps the behind-thescenes trouble got to him—who knows? At least everyone around him delivers. Anthony Hopkins plays Talbot’s eccentric father and he’s in fine form; in fact, he’s so spry and fun to watch, he should have played the title role. Hugo Weaving plays the lawman on the case and seems to be doing a turn of the century variation on his Mr. Smith character from The Matrix, which works better than you’d think. Emily Blunt, cast as the glum love interest, puts her heart

into a role that borders on thankless. She has no chemistry with the detached Del Toro, particularly during a painful scene where he teaches her to skip rocks. Unlike John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London, a brilliant horror/ comedy that comments on the naivetÊ of American tourists, or Mike Nichols’s underrated Wolf, about how a meek New York book publisher unleashes the beast within, there is no subtext here, just action scenes that bookend the story. Blunt has an intriguing moment where she tells the
tortured Talbot that, if the supernatural exists, then God and magic are real too, widening their options and the possibilities of life. Nothing ever comes of that provocative line, however. There are two double-dream sequences (a nod to An American Werewolf) that add little except cheap fake-out jolts and the rushed pace indicates this was clearly cut down for time. Yet the special effects, cinematography, make-up, music and especially the art direction are brilliant and the wolf-attack set pieces are spectacular. It looks like a classic, gothic Universal Studios monster movie and not merely a 21st century rehash. Director Joe adds classic touches throughout, like casting Geraldine Chaplin (Charlie’s daughter) as an allknowing gypsy. This is a film that wants to be great, and could have been if not for the sullen beast at its center. â– To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/ďŹ lm32

It isn’t just our human Mainland relatives who flee icy winters to enjoy the Hawaiian warmth, but also our whale cousins. This annual visit inspires Whale Day, voted “Best Community Festival” by MauiTime readers. The festivities kick off at 9am and continue ’til sunset. Popular Hawaiian musicians set the mood, including Marty Dread, Cecilio and Kapono, Na Leo Pilimehana, Anuhea, George Kahumoku Jr., and John Cruz. What else do we make in Hawaii besides good music? Ono food. Maui restaurants will offer up their fare, alongside a silent auction and a tent city of local artisans displaying, selling and sharing their latest creations. Whale Day has also developed a new, tech-savvy side, and will be the go-to location for a “tweet-up,” a meeting for Twitter users who have become friends via the microblogging site. And, of course, there are loads of ways for keiki to enjoy themselves, including children’s activities, a skateboarding competition and educational booths about whales and the ocean environment. There are prizes to be won too, including a round-trip flight for two to the Mainland. At its heart, this event is a fundraiser; proceeds fund marine education programs for Maui schoolchildren. Visit mauiwhalefestival.org for more info. [SB]
BAMP Project wakes Maui up with artists that challenge both themselves and their listeners with rich, exhilarating sounds. Matisyahu is a Hasidic Jew who hails from New York and has found—or created—a niche in reggae music that explores religious conviction without sounding trite. His music is accessible to people of all belief systems, drawing listeners in with the passion he feels for culture and religion. Matisyahu’s new album, Light, is an exploration of his years studying the Torah, with an emphasis on the story of the Seven Beggars by Reb Nachman, guided by his teacher Ephram Rosenstein. “I feel this theme, though written as a fairytale in the 1800s, is very relevant to many of the struggles that we face today,” Matisyahu says on his Web site, matisyahuworld.com. “From child soldiers to child sex slaves to everyday people trying to awaken their broken hearts.” Opening for Matisyahu will be Oooklah the Moc, The Throwdowns and The Alliez. Horoscopes
sign.language.astrology@gmail.com PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Fish at the bottom of a frozen pond can still survive the winter. They slow down their bodies and wait it out, so they don’t need to consume as much oxygen or food. Adopt a similar strategy this week. You’ll be getting a bit less of the things you usually need, but please don’t freak. Slow down a little and make do with what you have for now. Abundance is just around the corner—the trick is not panicking and just chilling until it arrives. Fail to do that, and you could (ironically) keep it from rounding the bend for quite some time.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) No one’s trying to rip you off, even though it may feel that way. Sometimes things just don’t work out; don’t become paranoid, or worse, get up on a self-righteous high horse and talk shit you’ll be embarrassed about later. It’s all too easy for you Rams to end up in confrontations that don’t lead anywhere. You’ve heard the expression, “pick your battles,” right? Most of the time, it refers to selecting scraps you can probably win—in your case, it means choosing fights that are actually worth fighting in the first place. Take it down a notch; there’s no need for conflict here.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) The past is the past. While it’s an important part of who you are today, its details aren’t always relevant for other people to know. Who you’ve become is what matters now. The moment aspects of your history threaten to hold you back, you’re free to consider not sharing them (of course, if withholding this information could hurt someone else, you’re obligated to spill the beans). However, if what they don’t know can’t hurt them, but could hurt you if they found out, it might be best to hang onto your blank slate and continue from there.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Champion of the Underdog should be the title you strive for this week. You’re in a position to help the honorable dark horse pull out a victory here. Instead of just toeing the line and doing what’s expected of you, step up and do what’s right. That won’t be easy, of course, but it’ll probably feel good, on top of making the world (at least your little slice of it) a better place. If you earn a few enemies in the process, so be it; trust me, you’ll secure more fans than foes by behaving so bravely and honorably.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Don’t rely too much on your armor. Even the toughest Crab’s shell can be cracked. Sometimes, it’s about dodging bullets instead of taking them in the chest and trusting your emotional Kevlar to absorb the brunt of the damage. You put too much stock in how protected you are by your well-earned battle armor; unfortunately, it still has more chinks than you think. I like that it’s mostly made you brave enough to venture right into the thick of any emotionally complex situation; this week, however, keeping yourself out of harm’s way is the name of the game.
POST YOUR OWN LISTINGS Want to get your listing in? Go to mauitime.com/listing and enter it. It’s that simple.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Singing for your supper is never as easy as simply having it served to you; however, even though Leos feel like royalty, most of you still have to work for a living. However, there are ways and there are ways—even in a recessed economy, there ought to be a way to shift what you do to earn money to stuff that at least partially fulfills or challenges you. It’s important for Leos to find that; unlike other signs, who can find other outlets for their personal fulfillment, you’ll never do well for long at a job you despise. This week, focus on at least finding leads to a job you can get that you wouldn’t hate, even years down the line.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I overheard some people discussing astrology, and they all agreed: “Virgos are passive-aggressive.” Now, usually when people call someone passive-aggressive, they just mean to say that they’re a pain in the ass, and want to sound smart and less bitchy while doing so. However, I still think this week it should be your mission to shift local perception of Virgos—and that might mean openly and brazenly fighting the good fight where appropriate. Passive or subversive resistance have their places, just not right now—boldly standing up for what you believe in is totally the way to go.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Every relationship requires balance; unfortunately this is one of your strengths that all too easily becomes a weakness. When exploring a new connection, it’s second nature for you to adapt to fit the situation, so it may seem (to both of you) that it’s a perfect fit. However, this often leaves some of your own desires repressed and unexpressed until much deeper into the relationship—when they might not be welcomed into this heretofore “perfect” scenario. Don’t you think it might be better to remember/ discover those desires early on? If they’re ultimately deal-breakers, it’s better for both of you to figure that out before you get in too deep.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I’ve known many a Scorpio who excelled at spinning creative versions of the truth. By omitting certain details or emphasizing others, you can paint a picture with nary a lie that nevertheless portrays quite a different scenario than what’s actually there. This is a useful skill at times, but employing it can be a very dangerous habit to get into. Know when to tell the brutal truth, leaving nothing out, and when it’s okay to soften things up with artistic interpretations of reality. Misjudging which to do when this week could lead to some uncomfortable or damaging scenarios, so be careful choosing when to embellish and when to just tell it like it is.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) It’s ironic that you sometimes have so much trouble letting things go, considering how often you encourage (and sometimes require) others to do exactly that. You’re usually pretty casual about your attachments and intent on just going with the flow; however, when you occasionally decide you really want something (or someone) you grab on with a vice grip and won’t let go, no matter what. Of course, that works out about as well for you as it does for most people who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge what’s actually happening. Since you’ve mostly been on the other side of that coin, can’t you flip it now and, finally, just let go?
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You have a quality that’s been described as persistent, stubborn, or intractable, depending on who’s talking. Most of the time, it serves you well. However, it can take you places that make you look obsessed or like a stalker. There are times when calling it quits is really the best thing you could do. This, my dear, is probably one of those. Recognize the reality of the situation, and just how unfeasible your plan really is. This kind of thing might work in a bad movie, but not in real life. Call the whole thing off, and move on, already.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’ve heard the expression, “when one door closes, another opens,” right? This is a comfort when one gets slammed in your face. However, there’s another side to that coin; sometimes a new door won’t open to you until you close the old one—waiting for it to swing closed on its own is foolish, and sabotaging things until someone else slams it shut is just cruel. Come to terms with where you’re at, and close that door, as gently as you can. Then be patient and alert—a new one will likely crack open before you have time to get bored.
