The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL “We need to consider what drug prohibition has done to the vital profession of law enforcement. It has divided police officers from the communities we serve, alienated us from young people, sent our call-loads through the roof, placed huge financial strains on police budgets and, sometimes, my colleagues have been injured or murdered while enforcing these drug laws. Every police officer should question whether the War on Drugs is worth fighting, particularly when there are other policy options that would result in less crime, addiction, disease and death.â€? That was David Bratzer, a Canadian police officer and member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), who I interviewed in January while he was honeymooning on Maui. Last week, some out-of-town cops visited the Valley Isle with a different message. As reported in The Maui News, members of the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Narcotic OfďŹ cers’ Association showed up for a “medical marijuana summitâ€? in Kahului, where they discussed the evils of decriminalization. As previously noted in this space, SB2213, a bill that would allow “compassion centerâ€? dispensaries, is currently moving through the legislature. Among the measure testimony is a letter from Jay Fleming, also of LEAP. Here’s an excerpt: “As a former officer, I know the voice of police is crucial in the dialogue about drug policy. But in the case of medical marijuana, physicians, caregivers, and patients are the ones who should be making decisions about medical care. It is inappropriate for the police to substitute our judgment for that of physicians and those in need of the care of

physicians.â€? Seriously, can we get some of these cops to move to Hawaii?‌. Want faster Internet? Don’t tell me—tell Google. The tech giant plans to pick one community to test an “experimental high-speed ďŹ ber network,â€? according to a missive from Akaku. To nominate Maui (the deadline is March 26) go to google.com/appserve/fiberrfi‌.. On March 19, the County issued two press releases. The first was about Mayor Tavares declaring March Women’s History Month, and featured a quote from the Mayor touting the “major rolesâ€? women have played “in shaping the future of our community.â€? The second release was a response by the County to a gender discrimination lawsuit filed last week by the Hawaii ACLU on behalf of three Baldwin High softball players and their coach. The suit names the state Department of Education (DOE) and the County, and claims the softball team is being forced to play on an inferior field, a violation of Title IX, also known as the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act. “The County does not discriminate on any basis,â€? says the release, adding that the County-owned field where the softball team practices “is in excellent condition and offers a number of amenities.â€? Last week, a judge disagreed and issued a preliminary injunction against the DOE and the County. According to the ACLU, a “court-appointed expert will recommend short term, immediate improvements to alleviate some of the more egregious disparities between the boys and girls playing fields.â€? This being Women’s History Month and all, that’s a good thing, right?‌.

LOCAL Last week I attended a media conference on Oahu with Publisher Tommy Russo, mostly to

hear remarks by John Temple, editor of the soon-to-launch Peer News. Peer News is the brainchild of eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar of Oahu‌and that’s about all anyone knows. What will it look like? How will it fit into Hawaii’s rapidly shrinking media landscape? And, most essentially, how will it make money? Not by selling ads, said Temple. Instead, he said, they’ll encourage users to participate, along with reporter “hosts,â€? in creating and discussing issues in a forum that sounds like a heavily moderated, newsy version of Wikipedia (though Temple said that comparison may be misleading). As of this writing, the site remains under construction, but Temple said a launch is imminent. As a journalist, media consumer and Hawaii resident, I’m rooting for Peer News to succeed, even if I’m still not certain what, exactly, it is. If the idea is to get people to pay to read and interact with the news (I’m guessing, but as Temple said, “there are only so many business modelsâ€?) I must confess I have my doubts— with few exceptions, news pay walls have failed wherever they’ve been erected. This is one case where I’d love to be proven wrong‌.

LCWATCH: Unpalatable L

ast week, I told you about the County Council Committee of the Whole’s vote to approve Ron McOmber to the LC Adjudication Board. In that column, I wrote that the tension was “palatable” even on the Akaku footage. Several readers pointed out my linguistic slip, but it proved to be unintentionally apropos.

commission nominee because of criminal or civil complaints. He advised the Council “not to dwell on [the] documents.” But that’s exactly what they did. Councilmember Sol Kaho‘ohalahala, his voice rising, said the Council would be “failing in [its] responsibility” if it approved McOmber. “This is not a worthy gentleman,” he said.

Emotions ran high—especially for a meeting concerning volunteer boards and commissions—but the most interesting part was hearing the Council discuss the LC, which generally flies under the radar everywhere but these pages. When the Council considered McOmber on March 19, the tension was again palpable on the footage. But for some Councilmembers, even ones who voted to move McOmber out of committee, the nomination was no longer palatable because of documents provided by Lanai residents related to, among other things, allegations of sexual harassment against McOmber. While Corporation Counsel Brian Moto said he’d only taken “a quick look” at the documents, which he called “voluminous,” he told Councilmembers there is no rule compelling them to vote against a board or

McOmber is among a group of Lanaians challenging Kaho‘ohalahala’s residency status, but that fact was left mostly unmentioned during the protracted discussion, which saw every member except absent Chair Danny Mateo weigh in. Instead, comments focused on McOmber’s character and on the nomination process. Councilmember Mike Victorino and Council Vice-Chair Mike Molina both wondered why the allegations against McOmber—some of which date back a decade—didn’t come up in 2006, when he was appointed to the Liquor Commission. Molina added

that it was “unfortunate” McOmber wasn’t at the meeting to defend himself. “Whether Mr. McOmber is a good person or a bad person, he has served on other [boards and commissions],” said Victorino. “He can’t be all bad.” Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson, who introduced the motion to disapprove McOmber, said even if some of the allegations are untrue, the Council should err on the side of caution. “If these are baseless charges, [the Mayor] can resubmit the name,” she said. In the end, the Council voted 8-0 to disapprove McOmber, whose term on the Liquor Commission ends March 31. Emotions ran high—especially for a meeting concerning volunteer boards and commissions—but the most interesting part was hearing the Council discuss the LC, which generally flies under the radar everywhere but these pages. Several Councilmembers expressed confusion about the difference between the Adjudication Board and the Commission. Kaho‘ohalahala—who at one point read a definition from the County Charter—had perhaps the best quote: “People who serve on [the Adjudication Board] have to have the kind of character that would drive them to be fair.” Sounds like a plan. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/lc37

THAT’S GROSS It’s a simple recipe, said A-List New York City chef Daniel Angerer: a cheese derived from the breast milk of his wife, who is nursing the couple’s 3-month-old daughter. As a chef, he said, “you look out for something new and what you can do with it, and what Angerer could do is make about two quarts of “flavor[ful] cheese out of two gallons of mother’s milk. How does it taste? Like “really sweet cow’s milk. He posted the recipe, “My Spouse’s Mommy Milk Cheese, on his blog and invited reader participation: “Our baby has plenty [of] back-up mother’s milk in the freezer, so whoever wants to try it is welcome to try it as long as supply lasts (please consider cheese aging time).

NO WAIT, THAT’S GROSS Florida’s Agriculture Department, acting on a tip, confiscated Giant African Snails believed to have been smuggled into the country by Charles Stewart for use in the religion Ifa Orisha, which encourages followers to drink the snails’ mucus for its supposed healing powers. Actually, said the department (joined in the investigation by two federal agencies), bacteria in the mucus causes frequent violent vomiting, among other symptoms. At press time, Stewart had not been charged with a crime.

PEOPLE WHO SHOULDN’T BREED (1) Jeff and Marci Beagley were sentenced to 16 months in prison in March after a jury in Oregon City, Oregon, found them guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the death of their teenage son, whose congenital urinary tract blockage was treated only with oils and prayer prescribed by the Beagleys’ Followers of Christ Church. Doctors said the boy could have been saved with medical treatment right up until the day he died. (The Beagleys’ infant granddaughter died in 2008 under similar circumstances, but no criminal conviction resulted.) (2) A 7-year-old girl died in February in Oroville, California, and her 11-year-old sister was hospitalized after being “lovingly beaten by their adoptive parents, Kevin and Elizabeth Schatz, who

are followers of religionbased corporal punishment. The Schatzes, as recommended by a fundamentalist Web site, had whipped the girls with quarter-inch-wide plumbers’ rubber tubing, to supposedly make the children “happier and “more obedient to God. Criminal charges against the couple were pending at press time.

BORN BOOZERS (1) Toni Tramel, 31, angry at being jailed in Owensboro, Kentucky, for public intoxication in March, had “assaulting a police officer added to the charges when, changing into a jail uniform, she allegedly pointed her lactating breast at a female officer and squirted her in the face. (2) Deanne Elsholz, 44, was charged with domestic battery in Wesley Chapel, Florida, in February after hitting her husband, David, in the face with a glass. David, intoxicated, had enraged Deanne by apparently completely missing the toilet bowl as he stood to urinate. (Deanne then angrily charged after him but lost her footing on the slippery floor.)

IT’S THE CREEPY ONES YOU GOTTA WATCH When the FBI finally concluded that the late-2001 anthrax scare was the work of government scientist Bruce Ivins (who committed suicide in 2008), the bureau released its investigative files, revealing personal activities that (according to Ivins’s own description) “a middle-age man should not do.â€? For example, Ivins admitted to being a cross-dresser, and agents discovered pornographic fetish magazines on “blindfolding or bondageâ€? themes and “15 pairs of stained women’s panties.â€? Ivins also admitted a decadeslong obsession with the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma and told agents how he broke into two chapters’ houses to steal books on KKG “rituals.â€? â–

Maui Cattle Company—local beef, raised right

MAU CATT I L C LE CO OM MP PA AN NY Y

f you’re a diehard vegetarian, the idea of a kinder, gentler cattle ranch might not be enough to win you over. It might even seem like an oxymoron. But the Maui Cattle Company is doing its darndest to make the rest of us feel better about what’s on our plates. Granted, beef on the hoof still ends up on the dinner table. You can’t get around that. It’s the nature of the beast, so to speak. But it’s the journey from calf to plate that’s important, according to Maui Cattle Company manager Alex Franco and Ulupalakua Ranch operations manager, James “Jimmy” Gomes. Maui Cattle Company LLC is actually a hui of six ranches on the island: Ulupalakua, Haleakala, Hana, Nobriga, Olumau and Kaupo. And while it’s a relatively new company, getting its doggies along since 2002, some of its entities, like Haleakala Ranch, have been

10 March 25, 2010

riding the range since 1888. It’s in their blood, quite literally. “When we averaged out the length of time in the ranching business,” says Franco, “it was 80 years.” Both Gomes and Franco trace their ranching heritage back at least three generations. The decision to band together was made to keep ranching alive and financially viable on Maui. “We saw that this type of business, this type of lifestyle, was on its way out,” says Franco. Currently, Maui Cattle Company is a together-but-separate type of arrangement. “We’re independent on day-to-day operations as far as what we do out in the field,” says Gomes “but when we have branding and sorting and so forth and we need some assistance, we’ll call our partners to see if they can come and help us.” And they’re all in agreement on the type of cattle ranching they practice. While they honor the paniolo traditions of yore, this is not your grandfather’s roundup. Gone

are the whips, hotshots—or prods—and loud vocalizations. These are softer, gentler ranchers; they insist on what they call “lowstress” handling for cattle herding. They provide training in the form of seminars to ensure that their people use the most humane practices. So while a cow’s final destination is never in question, the goal, according to Gomes, is to make its life calm and peaceful. “We use the animals for food but we don’t have to be harsh,” says Franco. The result, say both men, is happy island cows from start to, well, finish. They are Maui bred, fed and harvested (a much nicer word than slaughter). They bask in the same Maui sunshine as you and me and feed on local produce (grass) which is often more than can be said for us. And they end their days here. At no point in their lives do they cross the big pond. “There’s a myth out there that says our cattle go to the Mainland,” says Franco. The only animals that are shipped off-island are ones that have

not made the grade, d generally ll cows with ith a mean-streak or “troublemakers,” as Gomes calls them. These cattle are sold to Mainland interests, but they never come back. What Maui Cattle Company is left with, says Franco, are “cows with good dispositions, cattle that are naturally calm.” hese mellow Maui cattle don’t do drugs either—no growth stimulants, antibiotics or artificial ingredients. Not every cow is completely grass-fed from calf to plate, but they’ve made that goal and hope to accomplish it by the end of 2011. According to the company’s Web site, cattle raised on grass offer all kinds of benefits to the consumer. Vitamin E (an antioxidant), Omega-3 (linked to the reduction of cancer and heart disease) and Vitamin A (which may lower the risk of cancer and improves vision). It’s the way the market is going, says Gomes. And with the opening of Whole Foods on Maui, the grass-fed-only

BEST MEXICAN FOOD ON MAUI market is poised to get bigger than ever. It is a more expensive product, admits Franco. “Like [author and food activist] Michael Pollan said, either pay now or pay later. And that’s the bottom line. You spend a little bit more money on a healthier product.” But Maui Cattle Company doesn’t just serve the high-end market. They also service smaller mom and pop operations, sometimes even pre-packaging, pre-pricing and pre-labeling products to go directly on stores’ shelves, eliminating the need to hire a butcher. “We like to fit every group of people here on the island,” says Gomes, adding that if they didn’t, they’d “be out of business.” So while their customer list reads like a who’s who of Maui’s swankiest dining establishments—Roy’s, Capische, etc.—it also includes long-time

local businesses like Ah Fooks and Pukalani Superette and a host of other accounts, including a number of island schools. The folks at Maui Cattle Company seem intent on making carnivores like me feel OK about our dining choices. With their emphasis on humane ranching, their preservation of an old and endangered way of life and their commitment to local small businesses, it’s really no surprise that they also practice controlled grazing, a more environmentally responsible method in which the herds are rotated regularly to preserve the ranch land. And their commitment to protecting open spaces goes above and beyond. Ulupalakua Ranch, for example, has set aside 11,000 acres in conservation easement with Maui

Coastal Land Trust, while Haleakala Ranch has 5,000 acres at Waikamoi set aside to protect native birds. So is there a difference in taste between a happy cow raised locally in an environmentally sustainable fashion versus a traditional, highly stressed, grouchy animal that’s never seen a pasture? Studies, according to Franco, say there is. But the proof is in the tasting. The Maui Cattle Company beef I sampled certainly qualified as delicious. Then again, it was only one taste—not a very scientific sampling. I might have to do a little more research. ■

The steamed bun is soft and slightly sweet to contrast the melt-in-your-mouth pressed pork, seasoned with savory Hoisin sauce. s fast as his fingers take to the frets, Honolulu’s Jake Shimabukuro—the “Hendrix of the ukulele”—has become an international darling. Flashing a refreshingly authentic grin, both as he plays and as he speaks with genuine humility, his talent and true Aloha spirit have garnered the adoration of fans and willing interest of media folk. “I discovered that not only was he a

ushered him into music’s upper echelon. Changing the way the world (and even we here at home) perceive this diminutive, understated, two-octave, hollow-bodied string instrument, Shimabukuro channels an array of genres from rock to bluegrass to flamenco, masterfully interpreting sound in ways that were once not attempted—or perceived as possible—on the uke. In an online interview produced by CNN—made after this year’s TED conferences (Technology, Entertainment, Design) where Shimabukuro performed, and after which even @BillGates Tweeted “Amazing ukulele performance w/standing ovation”—Shimabukuro explained how the ukulele’s limited range of notes is something he’s embraced. He said it’s shaped his philosophy of the instrument

Instead of hording his selfhoned technique, he frequently passes along strumming styles or chord theory via Internet clips and Twitter, and even produced an instructional DVD titled Play Loud Ukulele. Nearly every recent report of Shimabukuro refers back to a short YouTube video produced by UkuleleDisco.com, which, as of this writing, had nearly 5 million views. The clip shows Shimabukuro perched casually on a stone, playing his acoustic Kamaka, ripping a rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” The video is credited with catapulting him to beyond-808 fame. ‘Dragon’ It Out Predictable plot and corny jokes rescued by soaring visuals How to Train Your Dragon

★★★★★

Yes, I had to pay for my checked bags.

Rated PG/98 min.

E

ight years ago, I took my friend Julia to the Starland Convention in Denver, a huge sci-fi movie nerdfest. (Somehow, Julia is now my wife.) She agreed to come because Christian Bale, her high school crush, was there promoting his big dragon-killer summer movie, Reign of Fire, while I wanted to go because, well, I’m a dork. We attended a panel where Bale and the film’s director discussed the making of their futuristic epic. During the Q&A, a woman stepped up to the mic and asked Bale, in all seriousness, how accurately the film portrayed the dragons, and if the dragons were treated humanely. Julia and I have never forgotten that woman, who I later dubbed “The Dragon Lady.” She would love How to Train Your Dragon, which, indeed, takes a sympathetic and thorough approach to those mythical fire-breathing beasts.

26 March 25, 2010

In the latest of what will be an endless string of 3-D CGI family films, a young man named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) watches as his Viking father (Gerard Butler) leads an army of dragon slayers and forces his son to become a cadet in a dragonhunting school. After Hiccup accidentally captures and befriends a much soughtafter dragon, he learns that they’re actually misunderstood, passive creatures who are simply defending themselves from humans.

The dragons vary in size and appearance and are more vivid and interesting than the humans. The Vikings look like burly lawn gnomes and the cadets resemble their inevitable action figures. Despite being voiced by the likes of Kristin Wiig, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the cadets are obnoxious and forgettable. Worst of all is Baruchel, who sounds like a nasally Christian Slater in the throes of puberty.

The plot is a melding of E.T, Star Wars and Hagar The Horrible, while the dialogue ranges between familiar standbys like, “You’re not my son!” to awful, wisecracks such as, “Your butt is so big, I thought you were a dragon!” The jokes may stink, but the midair set pieces will elicit oohs and aahs from everyone. The scenic animation is spectacular, the 3-D effects add to the experience and John Powell’s muscular, bagpipe-infused score gets hearts racing. This is yet another non-Pixar CGI film that has ample spectacle but too many lousy anachronisms and not enough heart or originality. A wordless montage where Hiccup teaches his dragon to fly and adds wind resistance to his scaly tail is wonderful, not only because the visuals are so astonishing but because the storytelling takes off and the sub-par dialogue takes a much needed rest. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film37

In the manner that almost all genius ideas originate—on a whim—slam star Kealoha stopped by a San Francisco poetry slam and the creative hemisphere of his brain held an immediate, successful coup. This was after earning a BS in Applied Nuclear Physics at MIT—his thesis was titled “Proliferation Issues Associated With the Transmutation and Stabilization of Plutonium”—and dipping his toes into the business world as a consultant, as well as working as a surf instructor. PHOTO BY JESSICA PEARL But a poetic career change called, and since then he’s proliferated many a poetry slam in both California and Hawaii, further spreading the word by founding Hawai’i Slam, Youth Speaks Hawai’i, First Thursdays (the world’s largest slam) and regularly competing in the National Poetry Slam. If you aren’t too intimidated by the mental might of Kealoha, come to Maui Slam’s March installment, or just watch and soak up the wordy wisdom. If you’re really shy, join in on the theme of the night by throwing on a Mexican wrestling mask. That’s right, kids from MIT like Nacho Libre too. After the slam scrimmage, DJ Boomshot spins his own brand of brainpower for a “champions” dance party. Mauislam.com, kealohapoetry.com, 280-5096 [Sierra Brown]

Born to a journo ‘ohana (his father, the editor of a local paper in hometown Manhattan, Kansas; his grandfather, a printer from New York), newspaperman and short story writer Damon Runyon lived a legacy-leaving life. His “Runyonesque” depictions inspired such stage and film works as Guys and Dolls, Little Miss Marker and Lady for a Day, and when he died in 1946 at the age of 66, one of the country’s first cancer research foundations was established in his honor (damonrunyon.org). He’s also partially responsible for the modern roller derby. At the turn of the 20th century, this circuit skate sport was more marathon than mashing—often lasting as long as six days and resulting in deaths from overexertion, according to 1885 reports in the New York Times. But Runyon recognized the audience’s entertained reactions to racers’ more malevolent antics, and convinced big-shot promoter Leo Seltzer to change the rules of the game—shortening it and making it full contact. Today, the sport is a high-energy jam of elbowing, slamming and whipping—and it’s growing in popularity. These days, players are widely wahine. On the Valley Isle, the Maui Roller Girls work to promote women’s empowerment and athleticism through the sport, and this Saturday, their Crazy 808’s will take on Kauai’s Garden Island Renegade Rollerz. Be sure to bring blankets and chairs—it’s a family occasion, so no booze or smokes—and get ready to watch a rumble. Mauirollergirls.com

Going Upcountry

Ag and Culture

Sunday (March 28), 10am-4 pm, Maui’s Winery and Ulupalakua Ranch Store, Ulupalakua

Saturday (April 3), Maui Tropical Plantation, Waikapu, 9am-4pm, free

I may be guilty of unabashed adoration of all things Upcountry, but it’s for good reason. Case in point: A cruise through the green, winding drive toward Ulupalakua—gazing at a patchwork palate of ochre and pale indigo, with the undulating wet and dry of late Spring—is a delight anytime. But this Sunday is special as “Ulupalakua Remembers” with a unique seasonal event that highlights not only the culinary offerings of the area, but its rich history, too. “[T]he PHOTO BY AMAUIBLOG.COM Paniolo Hall of Fame, a traveling exhibit on loan from the O‘ahu Cattleman’s Association, [consists] of photo portraits, short biographies and oral history interviews—recogniz[ing] 106 paniolo from around the islands who have contributed to Hawai‘i’s legendary paniolo history,” says event publicist Yuki Sugimura. Sure to be the highlight of the guided historical walking tours is the unusual, event-only look at the area’s old jail. Jazz Alley TV and MauiFEST Hawai‘i hook up the entertainment, starting off on the winery grounds with the North Shore Ukulele Boyz (12pm), followed by ukulele virtuoso Derick Sebastian (12:30-1:30pm) and concluding with the famed John Keawe (2:20-3:20pm). Meanwhile, performing at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store Deli & Grill is Braddah Francis Koahou (12-3pm)—stop by and you’ll not only get your fill of quality local music, but eats like elk burgers and steak chili (11am-4pm). And of course, no trip to Ulupalakua is complete without sipping on the complimentary samplings at the winery’s King’s Cottage. Mauiwine.com, ulupalakuaranch.com, 877-878-6058

The Pick gods’ prerogative is that this prime event gets a little more time to marinate with MauiTime readers. Slated for next Saturday, the Third Maui County Agricultural Festival—“Where Food and Farms for Maui Meet”—offers a buffet of ag-awareness activities and entertainment. The gamut of grinds will leave you spoilt for choice, and your hunger for knowledge will be satiated too, with informational booths including “Ask the Farm Doctor,” as well as an all-ag selection at an onsite bookstore by Barnes and Noble (10 percent of proceeds benefit the nonprofit arm of the Maui County Farm Bureau). Plus, Food Network aficionados will rejoice in the similarly skill-savvy “Taste Education” series (fees apply), where six of Maui’s most illustrious gastronome will take to a theaterlike stage, teaming up with industry allies to teach techniques of the trade. Get a free-range egg education from Theo Morrison of The Neighborhood Farm and Bobby Santos (I propose a throwdown!) of Maui Culinary Academy; learn to re-envision your beef preparation with chef Peter Merriman, alongside Alex Franco of the Maui Cattle Company; and get intense with Ryan Luckey of Pineapple Grill, as he works with sustainable fish and vegetables from WeFarm@Kapalua. The imaginative minds behind MauiThing’s hip threads will serve up an all-day Keiki Zone (“because kids learn when at play”), with an Easter egg hunt, gardening, games and reusable bag art. Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Many people get stressed out by change; for the most part, you’re excited by it. That doesn’t mean, however, you should be in a huge rush to mix things up and turn them upside down. That’s desirable when you (or someone you love) is stuck in a rut, but that’s hardly the case right now. Change will happen naturally and at a fair clip all on its own at the moment, so don’t go shoving things around trying to accelerate the process. Just chill out and let the situation unfold at its own pace. That ought to be fascinating enough on its own to keep you happily involved for quite some time.

SIGN

AGE LANGU

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Forget learning iambic pentameter or finding the perfect bouquet of roses. Traditional romance is all well and good, but what will work best here isn’t a sonnet or flowers, but something more unique, real, and raw. Open up and just be vulnerable in a way that presenting a poem or store-bought blooms could never do for you. It doesn’t involve reenacting a scene from some stupid movie or even anything remotely poetic; it just involves being absolutely and genuinely you, even if that seems incredibly mundane and prosaic to you. Trusting another person with your real self is about as romantic as it gets.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Bragging is never attractive. Even when people attempt to do it subtly, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see right through them. Learn from them—don’t do it. Rattling off a list of your accomplishments won’t get you anywhere. Anyone who’s going to be into you because of your achievements is a moron, anyway, so impressing them should not be high on your list of priorities. Those who like you for you will be all the more amazed when they discover that you modestly didn’t mention all the shit you’ve done—and they’ll adore you all the more for it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Your emotions at times are so overwhelming that you really have trouble moving on to the next thing until you’ve worked through them. At this point, you know more or less how to do that—but you often require time or attention that isn’t immediately available. This is when a little compartmentalization can go a long way. Put them aside until you can deal with them later. Then do address them later; letting them sit and fester would be very bad. However, being able to choose when, where, and how you deal with the stuff that’s happening to you is an important life skill. Practice it this week.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Make yourself ugly this week. Sometimes you get so worried about how you’re perceived that it actually holds you back from fulfilling your potential. Throw all that out the window for a while. Forego wearing nice clothes, doing your hair, or wearing makeup (as much as you can get away with, anyway), and see who’s superficial enough to snub you, and who might be impressed by the confidence it takes to just let it all hang out. However, this isn’t just an experiment to screen out the shallowest of your acquaintances, but rather simply an opportunity for you to let go (at least a little) of what other people think. Seize it.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) While any wrongs you’ve committed should have been forgiven and forgotten by now, especially given your efforts to make amends, some people just aren’t adept at letting go of their grudges. This is a tough thing to accept; however, you don’t really have much choice. Nothing you can say or do will speed up this process—in fact, mostly you’d just make it worse. It’s time to simply let go and move on. If they’re ever going to come around (and that’s a big “if”), they need to do it in their own time and in their own way. Until then, just leave it alone.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) What you’re up to now is like waiting for an earthquake or global warming to make your house suddenly be on beach-front property. Don’t be that passive, because what you’re hoping for will never happen (the way you’re imagining and going about it). You’ve got to take some action here, and push for what you want. You may never be able to move your house to an ocean view—but if you were determined enough, I’m sure you could end up living somewhere near the beach. What you want is in your grasp—it’s a matter of not being lazy and sitting around waiting for it to be handed to you.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Speed up your thought process. It does you virtually no good to realize an hour or two after the event that someone cute was flirting with you, and not just being friendly. You need to be present enough to figure out, in the moment, what’s actually happening, so you can respond to it appropriately. This is mostly a matter of paying proper attention, reading between the lines, and being imaginative enough to formulate and test theories about what’s really going on before the moment has passed. The best part is: this process is fun. Open your eyes and mind, and get out there and play.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Your competitive nature means you can never throw a game—even if some people think it’s the “right” thing to do. The best you can do is simply absent yourself from the whole situation—not giving it your all if you were there would be inconceivable. That, unfortunately, may be the bestcase scenario this week. If you’d feel similarly bad about a win or a loss here, all that’s left for you to do is abstain, and accept the outcome that occurs without your involvement. Walk away, already, and go find something else to do—preferably something distracting.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Sagittarians are completely unfamiliar with the concept of losing on purpose; you, however, know that there are times to retreat and that sometimes losing a battle is better for your overall strategy than simply charging into the fray without holding anything back. This week may present this exact scenario. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Would a loss or retreat on this particular front help you achieve your ultimate aim? All signs point to yes. Be a gracious and benevolent loser, and wait for your moment to strike; it will come.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) People who lose a lot can sometimes set themselves up to lose a whole bunch more; by resigning themselves to failure, they often create that very outcome practically before the game’s begun. Be careful; you may be cultivating this very loser mentality. Permanently forget phrases like “unlucky in love,” or “financially unstable” and never again apply them to yourself. Model yourself after someone who’s successful in the area you’ve had a streak of bad luck in. You may never achieve their level of success—but chances are, if you can shake the idea that you will always suck, you’ll come close.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s not often you get a craving for something specific; usually, you’re more or less happy with whatever comes along. However, once you really focus in on something, you’re virtually insatiable. That’s no problem, really; it’s kind of fascinating. The conflict occurs when it’s something you can’t have—or that you rely on someone else to provide. Then you can’t satisfy your own cravings, and consequently become an unmanageable mess. This is when a compelling distraction is in order, to keep your mind off what you can’t have (enough of). Luckily, one of these is floating around; avail yourself of it.
