Ah, chicken fighting. No other issue combines so many hot buttons—cultural sensitivity, gambling, law enforcement, animal cruelty—and also features, well, chickens fighting. The fowl sport (sorry) is back in the news because of HCR277, a resolution co-introduced by Central Maui Rep. Gil Keith-Agaran that passed through the House Committee on Tourism, Culture and International Affairs (TCI) this week. The resolution does not, as some have suggested, legalize chicken fighting, which is prohibited by both federal and state law. Instead it “supports the recognition of cockfighting as a cultural activity.” (One of many reasons cited in the resolution text, and I swear I am not making this up: “Abraham Lincoln was nicknamed ‘Honest Abe’ not for his politics, but because of his fairness as a cockfighting referee.”) Of course, that hasn’t dampened the outrage of animal-rights advocates. In a scathing blog post, national Humane Society CEO Wayne Pacelle dismissed the cultural justification: “A wide array of animal abusers use the smokescreen of culture as a defense for their depravity, whether they are bullfighters, dogfighters, or seal clubbers. It is just amazing that a group of elected officials… would provide a defense for a group of known, professional lawbreakers who enjoy the sight of animals trying to hack each other to death and like to gamble on the outcome.” Of the 11 legislators who serve on the TCI, only six voted on the resolution; the final tally was four in favor and two opposed. The other five members, including West Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey, were excused. Hey, I’m sure they were busy—those asses weren’t going to cover themselves. (Update: Right before deadline, the House shelved the resolution and Majority Leader Blake Oshiro told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that “absent some extraordinary measures…it’s dead.”)…

The idea of increasing the tax on imported oil to fund alternative energy and local food security has been floated (and sunk) before, but a bill currently moving through the legislature (see By the Numbers, page 9) appears to have momentum. It sounds clear-cut, yet there are sticking points. First, oil companies will pass the cost on to consumers because that’s what they do and no one can stop them, meaning higher gas prices and electricity bills. Second, the measure doesn’t raise taxes on coal or imported biofuels like palm oil. As Honolulu-based Life of the Land pointed out in testimony submitted to the

legislature in February, “[t]axing oil but not coal and not tropical biofuels will cause oil to be more expensive…and may lead to fuel substitution.” Brings to mind a phrase Obama repeated often during the health care debate: “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Guess it comes down to how many compromises you can make before something is compromised…. Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and…Prince Kuhio? Apparently so. In a March 26 Twitter post, Honolulu Councilman and Congressional candidate Charles Djou (@Djou4Hawaii) wrote that “Prince Kuhio, a Republican… is a role model for me as a Congressman.”

Never mind that Kuhio started out as a member of the Home Rule Party of Hawaii, and the Republican Party he eventually joined in the early 1900s had about as much in common with today’s GOP as it did with the Whig Party—it never hurts to compare yourself to a guy who’s had a day named in his honor. (Note: Don’t think it escaped my attention that I’ve made two Abe Lincoln references in one column.)… If contributor Greg Mebel’s December story about cuts in the Maui Public Defender’s Office didn’t convince you Hawaii is a bad place to wind up in court, perhaps this will: A survey of the nation’s legal systems by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released this month gave the Aloha State low marks across the board, including “Judges’ Impartiality” (37th out of 50 states) and “Judges’ Competence” (36th out of 50). I’d like to say, for the record, to any Maui judge in whose courtroom I may find myself: I’m sure this isn’t about you….

Insert cock joke.

In this week’s feature (page 12), noted journalist and activist Norman Solomon exposes the shortcomings of the health care bill Obama signed into law this week. I’ll add that it’s been truly bizarre to watch a gutted, watered-down, lobbyist-placating piece of legislation that features no public option and plays directly into the hands of private insurance companies get successfully branded as socialism. It would be like if, in the weeks after we invaded Iraq, thousands of protestors had taken to the streets calling Bush a peacenik. I mean, I get it; the recipe is simple: take something you don’t like, slap an “ism” on it, whip your base into a frenzy and stand back with a satisfied smirk. I guess I’m just disappointed so many people swallowed it. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut38

A Fool’s Paradise Hawaii has a long history of tricks, hoaxes and legends

R

aucous roots run deep in Hawaii, too. Residents and visitors alike can readily conjure the image of happy menehune, the mythical little people famed for their nighttime craftsmanship skills (notably, Kauai’s Alekoko Fishpond, which legend tells was constructed overnight). Loren Coleman, cryptozoologist and coauthor of The Field Guide of Bigfoot and

Other Mystery Primates (1996) says his book includes his “investigations of the 1940s’ Waimea sightings of Menehune by school superintendent George London and about 45 children from two middle elementary level classrooms.” The children are purported to have “told of seeing the Menehune playing around the large trees on the lawn of the parish property, which stands directly across the street from Waimea High School today.” The late, celebrated folklorist, Dr. Katharine Luomala proposed her perspective

nocturnal tendencies. Not so much lost in translation as left in translation, the natives seem to have found the confusion amusing and encouraged the miscommunication— birthing a whole new branch of lore and possibly the first modern Hawaiian hoax. But trickery runs deeper still—our own island’s legendary namesake is lyrically heralded as the “mischievous, marvelous, magical Maui” by the late Israel Kamakawio‘ole. There are the tales of Maui’s repeated journeying to the underworld APRIL 1

T

o be fooled is human, to fool is divine. Our earliest fables and parables prove our love of—and susceptibility to—trickery, and while such lore often looks to impart wisdom, the deceptive high jinks at its heart speak to our very nature. It makes sense, then, that such an imaginative and conniving species would designate a whole day upon which to celebrate the practical joke. Recognized worldwide, the origins of April Fools’ Day are as questionable as the shenanigans that ensue. The most popular hypotheses relate to the centuries-long calendar conundrum, culminating with Pope Gregory XIII’s 1582 reformation of the Julian calendar—done largely to solve the issues of calculating Easter dates. But what the adoption of the Gregorian calendar also did was officially move what was once New Year merriment at the close of March—sometimes continuing to the onset of April—to January 1. Despite papal approval, it took centuries for the Gregorian calendar to become the international standard. Amidst all this timeline turmoil, it would have taken a while for rural residents to get the word. City folk in the know would poke fun at these “fools,” and thus, it’s believed, “All Fools’ Day” was born (to the bumpkins’ credit, the Julian calendar had reigned since 46 BC). However, many European countries had already adopted a January 1 New Year decades before the Gregorian calendar’s implementation. Plus, many earlier references exist in European literature and historical record, pointing toward distinctive April 1 antics in the Western world as far back as the 14th century. These early manifestations can be traced to the Sizdah Be-dar, the 13th and final day of the Iranian New Year season called Nowruz. Norwuz celebrates not only the New Year, but—as it begins on the day of the vernal equinox—heralds spring, too. And Sizdah Be-dar is considered the oldest prank-playing tradition still in practice, with the United Nations recognizing its origins as a Persian spring festival ca. 500 BC. Did you do the math? Yep. If it begins on the day of vernal equinox, the Iranian’s long-running day of droll falls on what we’d call April 1 (or April 2 if it’s a leap year). Coincidence? Unlikely.

officials in trapping the elusive creature— searched for what they believed to be a dangerous jaguar or leopard in excess of 150 pounds (based on tracks found from the animal’s rear paw). Yet, poised with helicopter, game traps and tranquilizer guns, they found no hide, just a little hair. And, though the DLNR still maintains a “Big Cat Page” Web site with information about the safe capture plan and how to report a sighting, the official search was suspended due to mounting costs, the growing lack of credible sightings and inconclusive DNA evidence from hair samples. Rumors of Upcountry’s Big Cat are said to have been circulating since the late ’80s, but it remains a mystery as unsolved as Loch Ness.

of these Sandwich Isle sprites in a 1951 article for the Bishop Museum titled The Menehune of Polynesia and Other Mythical Little People of Oceania. Turns out there is no oral tradition of menehune pre-contact. Edward Joesting, in his book Kaua’i: The Separate Kingdom, writes, ”[i]t seems likely [that] Menehune was the name given by the Tahitians to the early settlers of Hawai’i… There is a logical process in the evolution of the name… Manahune, a slight dialectical variation of Menehune… became a name for a commoner and a term of derision.” So when trying to explain that a person was of a lower stature, early explorers and missionaries mistook menehune as being akin to hobgoblins of Western lore, like Scotland and Northern England’s “Brownie,” also with

to bring back flaming fingernails (as he’d extinguished the village’s fire) as well as the famed fishing of land from the sea, with a hook made from the jawbone of his augur grandmother. Perhaps the most iconic image associated with this demigod is that of Maui cunningly wrestling the rays from the sun atop the slopes of Haleakala. The slopes of Haleakala are home to a more modern tale—with a tail. The legendary “Big Cat,” stirred up fear and excitement among Upcountrians beginning in December 2002, with purported sightings continuing until the search was officially called off in November 2003. The Honolulu Advertiser reports that experts from the Arizona Fish & Game Department—brought in to assist Maui

he Honlulu Star-Bulletin had some April Fools’ fun in 1936, as noted at museumofhoaxes.com, with a report of the local discovery of a Viking vessel (perhaps playing off emerging evidence of Vikings’ inhabiting the Americas centuries before Columbus, and the 1898 discovery of a rune stone in Minnesota, believed to be from the Knights Templar). Again in 1950, the Star-Bulletin ran a fake report that a UFO had crashed on the Big Island. The last time April Fools’ fell on MauiTime’s Thursday publication-day was in 2004, and then-editor Anthony Pignataro wrote a feigned lede titled “The Sub Train,” detailing a proposed underwater passenger train system between the islands. The gag was glorified with a sleek, red and yellow high-speed railcar that, through the magic of PhotoShop, appeared to be traveling within an underwater tunnel (none other than the acrylic tunnel of the Maui Ocean Center’s open ocean exhibit). Pignataro’s imaginary developer, Jack Moffett, was the kind of man whose two ex-wives are “friendlier with each other than they are with him,” and who “chuck[ed] many a cantaloupe at teachers’ houses.” “Hey, I love the reef,” Moffett “said.” “It pains me to say that dredging for the tunnel will tear the merry hell out of [it]. Just blast it to Kingdom Come. If I could do this without ripping apart the reef I would, but I can’t.” The tongue-in-cheek nature of Pignataro’s piece was hopefully obvious to all who read it. (He even points out that a tunnel from Maui to Oahu would stretch 120 miles, “[n] ever mind that the longest tunnel in the world is little over 33 miles long.”) But with the Superferry on the horizon, Pigntaro’s closing line was ominously prescient: “In just a few years, I think this will all be a very big deal.” Proving the truth is often said in jest—and a good jest should speak some truth. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/upfront38

(1) A February St. Petersburg Times report found several local people who regularly cook gourmet meals for their dogs and who revealed their dogs’ (or maybe just “their”) favorite recipes. “Veggie Cookies for Dogs,” for example, requires wholewheat flour, dried basil, dried cilantro, dried oregano, chopped carrot, green beans, tomato paste, canola oil and garlic. Asked one chef: Why feed “man’s best friend” what you wouldn’t eat yourself? (2) A day spa for dogs (“Wag Style”) in Tokyo offers sessions in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, supposedly easing doggy arthritis, healing wounds and halting aging. (Some racehorse owners are certain that the chambers help with equine muscle and joint problems, but an academic researcher told a BoingBoing.net writer that evidence of benefit is “anecdotal.”)

FALSE CONFESSION At first, Rev. Fred Armfield’s arrest for patronizing a prostitute in Greenwood, S.C., in January looked uncontroversial, with Armfield allegedly confessing that he had bargained Melinda “Truck Stop” Robinson down from $10 to $5 for oral sex. Several days later, however, Armfield formally disputed the arrest, calling himself a “descendant of the original MoroPithecus Disoch, Kenyapithecus and Afro Pithecus,” a “living flesh and blood being with sovereign status,” and someone who, based on his character and community standing, should not be prosecuted. Also, he claimed that any payment to “Truck Stop” with Federal Reserve Notes did not legally constitute a purchase since such notes are not lawful money.

BODY OF LIES (1) Glenn Armstrong, 47, had a defense ready when police accused him of taking restroom photographs of boys in Brisbane, Australia, in January. He said he was having an ongoing debate with his wife and was gathering proof that most boys are not circumcised. (2) Sheriff’s deputies in Austin, Texas, arrested Anthony Gigliotti, 17, after complaints that the teen was annoying women by following them around in public and snapping photographs of their clothed body parts. Gigliotti told one deputy that he needed

the photos because the sex education at his Lake Travis High School was inadequate.

WHAT A DRAG Fredrick Federley, a member of the Swedish Parliament, said he has always campaigned as someone who does not take gifts from those he is responsible for regulating, but he was called out by the newspaper Aftonbladet in February for having accepted a free travel holiday from an airline. Federley denied that “he” accepted the trip. He reminded reporters that he is a notorious, flamboyant cross-dresser, and thus that it was his alter-ego “Ursula” who received the free holiday.

WE’LL WEEP FOR THEM LATER In February, the trade group Mortgage Bankers Association announced the sale of its Washington, D.C., headquarters for $41 million. The association had purchased the building in 2007, at the peak of the real estate bubble, for $79 million.

SAY IT AIN’T SUE (1) Craig Show, 49, filed a lawsuit in January against the Idaho State Police and the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, demanding compensation following his DUI arrest in August. Show said the cops had seized a “medicine bag” on his motorcycle and, in opening it for inspection, permitted the “mystical powers” inside to escape. The bag was blessed by a “medicine woman” in 1995 and, Show said, had been unopened since then. (2) Teacher Karen Hollander filed a lawsuit in November against the New York City Department of Education after taking a fall on “slippery foreign substances,” including condoms, on the floor at the High School of Art & Design. Since schools distribute condoms on campus, she said, the department is responsible when students open them and discard them during the lunch period, littering the floor. ■

Eh Brah, you were looking all cherry in your teal green Chevy, waiting for the light to turn green. You had your little white pit bull puppy hanging out the window and when the pretty girls “awwed” at how cute your dog is, you must have lost your mind. When the light turned you proceeded to make a left-hand turn into oncoming traffic! When your puppy fell out the window and landed in the highway, I thought you would be concerned. But instead, as you got out to pick the dog up, you proceeded to yell at the person—who had the right of way and didn’t run over your dog—to pay attention! How about you give the dog to someone with a bigger brain, or let the dog drive next time—you may be better off. I know the dog will be. ■

HEALTH CARE! *APRIL FOOLS’! WHY THE LACK OF A PUBLIC OPTION MAKES THE DEMS’ BIG VICTORY A HOLLOW ONE BY NORMAN SOLOMON

12 April 1, 2010

M

any well-informed and insightful people are hoping that the health care bill, despite its flaws, will lead to something better. But few backers want to dwell on its requirement that everyone get health coverage from the private insurance industry—a stunning transfer of power and wealth that will greatly boost the leverage of an already autocratic corporate state. Not long ago, the most prominent supporters of the public option were touting it as essential for health care reform. Now, suddenly, it’s incidental. In fact, many who were lauding a public option as the key to a better health care future are now condemning just about anyone who insists that the absence of a public option makes the recently signed bill unworthy of support. Consider this statement: “If I were a senator, I would not vote for the current health care bill. Any measure that expands private insurers’ monopoly over health care and transfers millions of taxpayer dollars to private corporations is not real health care reform.” That statement is as true today as it was when Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, made it three months ago in a Washington Post op-ed. But now, a concerted political blitz is depicting anyone who takes such a position as a menace to “real health care reform.” After devoting vast amounts of time, money, energy and political capital banging the drum for the public option as absolutely vital during 2009 and throughout the winter, countless liberal organizations and prominent Democrats in Congress have made a short-order shift. You are now to understand that the public option isn’t essential—it’s expendable. And all of a sudden, people who assert that a public option is a minimal requirement for meaningful health care reform are no longer principled—they’re pernicious. This dynamic goes beyond the routine malleability of political positions. While the whips crack on Capitol Hill, what we’re seeing is a stampede of herd doublethink.

I

continue to believe that guaranteed healthcare—a.k.a. single-payer or enhanced Medicare for all—is the only way to solve this country’s enormous health care crisis. Early last year, before the public option shrank and shrank some more and then disappeared under the bus of the Obama Administration, it appeared to possibly be a significant step forward. But the White House, even while claiming to want a public option, was cutting deals with the pharmaceutical and hospital industries. For those who doubt that the Administration engaged in double-dealing to such an extent, I recommend the March 16 article by Huffington Post writer Miles Mogulescu, “NY Times Reporter Confirms Obama Made Deal to Kill Public Option.” A postscript from Mogulescu voices a broader outlook. I’ll quote a couple of paragraphs here: “Whenever I write blogs which are critical of Obama and Congressional Democrats for making corporatist deals, I

get numerous comments from people who believe they are progressive but say they will never vote for Obama or Democrats again, that they will stay home at the next election, or that they will vote for small third parties who have no chance of winning. It’s not my intent to encourage those views. Do people making these comments really think bringing Republicans back to power would make things better?…

like the Progressive Era, The New Deal, and the Great Society, have come when strong progressive movements have forced elites and elected officials to enact somewhat progressive legislation.” The dynamic now in full force on Capitol Hill was aptly described by Dean in his Washington Post op-ed midway through December: “In Washington, when major bills near final passage, an inside-

The Democratic Party will be cast— with strong evidence—not as the biggovernment socialists the Tea Party is fretting about, but as a powerful tool of corporate America. “Progressives need to have a sophisticated and nuanced relationship with elected Democrats. After the 2008 elections, too many progressive organizations demobilized believing their job was simply to take orders from the White House to support Obama’s agenda, whatever it was. That was a mistake. It’s equally a mistake for progressives to overreact in the opposite direction and think they can abandon electoral politics and do nothing to prevent the Republicans from regaining power. What’s needed is a powerful grassroots progressive movement to force elected officials to do the right thing more often and to counter-balance the power of big money in politics. The periods of progressive change in American politics,

the-Beltway mentality takes hold. Any bill becomes a victory. Clear thinking is thrown out the window for political calculus. In the heat of battle, decisions are being made that set an irreversible course for how future health reform is done. The result is legislation that has been crafted to get votes, not to reform health care.” A week after Dean’s article, the Senate approved the health care bill that was then “deemed” by the House—with the avid support of Dean and numerous other public-option enthusiasts, and also for that matter with the support of Rep. John Conyers and many other single-payer enthusiasts (including left-wing standardbearer and former presidential candidate

HAWAII REACTS

What local politicians and organizations are saying about the health care bill… “The health care legislation…will force Hawaii and all the other states into a one-size-fits-all program that is financially unsustainable.” - Gov. Linda Lingle “The passage of national health care reform is a momentous step forward for our country and our state. It will improve the lives of Hawaii families by making health care more affordable and accessible, while preserving the best elements of what Hawaii already has…” - Gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie “[T]his bill undermines our prosperity and the prosperity of our children. This complicated and convoluted new government entitlement is another expenditure we are irresponsibly placing on the back [sic] of generations to come.” - Hawaii Republican Party Chair Jonah Ka‘auwai “This legislation brings us much closer to helping millions of older Americans get quality, affordable health care…. We believe it will help older Hawaii residents, including more than 193,000 Medicare beneficiaries, get the care and medications they need at a price they can afford.” - AARP Hawaii Director Barbara Kim Stanton “Congress committed our nation to a massive $1 trillion health care bill that will do little to improve health care for most Americans. The 75 percent of Americans who already have health insurance will not see any significant benefit…” - Honolulu Councilmember and Congressional candidate Charles Djou “[The bill is] not perfect, but [it’s] a step in the right direction. The health insurance reform measure achieves the three key goals of affordability for the middle class, accessibility for all Americans and accountability for the insurance industry.” - Rep. Mazie Hirono

Rep. Dennis Kucinich). The quality of the Senate health care legislation hasn’t improved in the three months since Dean condemned it. What has increased is the cacophony of voices and pressures to tout double-think as virtuous pragmatism.

B

ut there are big problems with skipping lightly past the absence of a public option in the current bill. And none is bigger than the reality of the individual mandate in the legislation. It’s remarkable and sadly revealing that boosters of the bill have scarcely mentioned—much less publicly come to terms with—the dire implications of a law that requires people to have health insurance and offers no option other than further enriching the private insurance industry. Last year, when the subject came up, progressive supporters of the White House’s general approach were quick to offer assurances that a public option would mitigate the unpleasant aspects of mandated coverage. After all, the story went, people could select a nonprofit government-run entity for insurance coverage rather than being forced to choose between corporate insurance policies. With that option removed, corporate insurance is all that’s left. Meanwhile, all the hype about how 30 million more Americans “will be covered” fails to deal with the quality and cost of their purported coverage, much less how much real access to health care will actually result. For many, the available coverage will be bottom-of-the-barrel quality—and even then, given thin personal finances, would cause added strains to pay for premiums. In the absence of public-option health insurance run for purposes other than maximizing profits, the built-in unfairness of an individual mandate becomes magnified. What’s more, the very concept of health care as a human right will be fundamentally undermined by placing the health-insurance burden on individuals. Many who receive government subsidies will routinely struggle to make ends meet, while making do with shoddy health plans as part of a new configuration of health care apartheid. And, inevitably, the extent of government subsidies will be vulnerable to attacks from politicians eager to cut “entitlements.” On a political level, the mandate provision is a massive gift to the Republican Party, all set to keep on giving to the right wing for many years. With a highly intrusive requirement that personal funds and government subsidies be paid to private corporations, the law would further empower right-wing “populists” who want to pose as foes of government “elites” bent on enriching Wall Street. With this turn of the “health care reform” screw, the Democratic Party will be cast—with strong evidence—not as the big-government socialists the Tea Party is fretting about, but as a powerful tool of corporate America. ■

Whole New Lu Lu’s Kihei joint has a revamped menu and entertainment lineup, but the same awesome views 1941 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei 879-9944 8am-late, daily

I

n case you haven’t noticed, Lu Lu’s Kihei is making a lot of changes. With new owners and management, the retro surfthemed restaurant is mixing up its menu— breakfast is now served seven days a week—and entertainment lineup. “I added my own touches here and there,” says Chef Tracy Edelhertz, the maestro behind the culinary revamp. The restaurant is in the south corner of Kihei Kalama Village above the Tattoo Co.You can either take the elevator or head up the stairs to the dining room; however you get there, you’ll encounter amazing ocean views. Lu Lu’s is essentially a big open veranda, spacious and tiki-infused. There’s plenty of seating at the bar as well, which features multiple big-screen TVs. A stage for entertainment and pool tables round out the mauka end. The breakfast menu is loaded with options. You can get scrambles, omelets, biscuits and sausage, eggs benedict, five different sandwiches, rice bowls, loco moco and pancakes with mango, banana and strawberry. There are three different vegetarian offerings, including an Indian breakfast burrito that may be the only one of its kind on-island. For the budget-conscious, the Sunshine breakfast starts at $4.99 and comes with two eggs, hash browns or rice and toast or pancakes. Most breakfast dishes are under $10. My recent dinner with the family was a blast. The poke was excellent, with a wasabi

edamame puree at the base and ahi and onion salad and crisp wonton chips to bring it all together. It’s a new take on a familiar dish and went great with the on-tap Stella Artois. I also loved the crab hush puppies, again a new twist on the familiar. It’s served with a housemade mango chutney that you really shouldn’t miss. There are tons of salad options, but the standouts are the goat cheese and island-style salads, both featuring strawberries and miso dressing. For dinner we went with Maui Cattle Co. burgers. bleu cheese—rich, tender and juicy. Lu Lu’s is known for its burgers, and has kept favorites like the Magnum—cheddar, bacon and guacamole—but added new options like the sampler sliders and a “burger challenge”—32 oz. of meat, toppings as you like, eat it in 10 minutes or less and dinner is on Lu Lu’s. (They’ve have had seven “winners” so far, one woman and six dudes.) Chef Tracy warned us early to save room for dessert because she makes it herself. In fact, her cheesecake-making skills have won her honors since culinary school. I tried the Lilikoi and it was fantastic; the cheesecake is made in traditional New York style and the topping is tangy, complementing the cake. You can get also the familiar strawberry cheesecake, or homemade brownie a la mode, all for $4.99. We happened to be at the restaurant on karaoke night, and my four-year-old daughter turned out to be a natural on the mic, singing two songs (yes, they had the ABC song and Twinkle, Twinkle in their songbook). Another family’s little ones got in the action and did a quartet. It might not have been pitch-perfect, but it sure was entertaining, and a testament to the familyfriendly vibe. Keiki karaoke was great, but next time I think I’ll catch a Friday-Saturday sunset hula show. ■ Got a hot food scoop? Contact Jen Russo at 808-280-3386 or fax to 808-244-0446. Ambassador of Aloha Grammy darling Amy Hanaiali‘i wants to preserve, and redefine, what it means to be Hawaiian Amy Hanaiali‘i Web site: amyhanaialiigilliom.com Upcoming gigs: Every Fri. & Sat. in April (except the 10 and 17) at Stella Blue’s Supper Club. Four-course dinner and show, $60. Dinner seating, 6pm; show, 7:30pm; 874-3779 Essential tracks: “Pua Hone,” “Kou Leo Nahenahe”

T

he morning I sit down with Amy Hanaiali‘i, she looks like the quintessential off-duty diva. With a career in Hawaiian music that’s spanned her life and with a musical heritage that goes back generations, she’s earned14 Na Hoku Hanohano awards and four Grammy nominations. And she’s just reaching the top of her game—trotting across the globe and garnering plenty of press, locally and overseas. “I was just in San Jose the night before last,” says Hanaiali‘i of the outdoor theater where she performed for a crowd of thousands. “The Governor made me Ambassador of Music two years ago. So I work a lot with the Hawaii Visitors Bureau—traveling a lot, spreading aloha and Hawaiian music.” Hanaiali‘i certainly embodies Hawaiian charms. When she smiles and laughs it’s a bright flash of perfect pearly whites—the kind-of agape, lean-forward grin that one might see on a model in a magazine, femininely amused by a lover’s tease (or promoting a superb shampoo). Her waistlength hair is a gloss of every autumn color, and though it’s of unmistakable Polynesian thickness it hangs with polished defiance against the relentless humidity. She’s got the height of a rock star, and Hanaiali‘i appears even taller in the long lines of her dark athletic pant, even while wearing flats. But it’s her comfy black hoodie—the left breast embroidered with a gold Grammy emblem—that’s the most telling. Hanaili‘i and her brother, Eric Gilliom, are the first Hawaiian performers to ever grace the stage at the Grammys, which were held January 31 at Los Angeles’s Staples Center. “I’m 5’10”, so with heels, you know…” she laughs, recounting stories of chatting and cheek-kissing with a surprisingly short Robert Downy, Jr., a quick dressing room talk-story with Celine Dion and, of course, hanging out with buddy Jamie Foxx (who, she divulges, is a fan of Kahului’s Cupie’s diner). The way she beams about her four-yearold daughter—who she’s raising as a single mom—is similar to the way she beams about the Grammys. Part of it’s undoubtedly due to the allure of Hollywood stardom— rubbing elbows with the rich and famous— but Hanaiali’i’s motivation goes deeper.

“Now I’m just super focused on my mind, my heart and my body—getting healthy,” she says. “I’m ready for the really big next transition in my life…I’m trying to get my mind set for that [and] I’m trying to push super hard to take my music to the next level.” She says she wants to play at more performing arts centers around the world, and with symphonies across the country (she’s already done so in Nashville, plus numerous times in Honolulu). She calls the feeling of being backed by an orchestra “indescribable.” “I have a couple [recording] projects I’m working on that are real heavy,” adds Hanaiali’i. Every time she speaks of her forthcoming work, she looks down at her hands, which she holds, twisting as if she were cradling a precious crystal orb. “I’m always trying to reinvent myself—trying to find ideas to help younger generations understand their placement in Hawaii.” Hanaiali‘i says imparting cultural

knowledge—and, in a way, redefining the meaning of what the world perceives to be “Hawaiian”—is her driving force. “Hawai’i kind of feels like it’s slipping away— nothing is tangible anymore,” she says. “Younger generations have to be raised with their genealogy. They have to understand who the people were that were in their family to understand who they are going to be and who they are now. “Some people say, ‘Oh, old Hawai’i is gone’,” she continues. “No, it’s still here. You just have to tap into it. You just have to ask for it. That’s why we have an aumakua, that’s why we have kupuna, that’s why we have akua. It’s those three things that always keep in you in check.” Hanaiali‘i remembers her grandmother as one of the pioneers of Hawaiian music. “She was so far ahead of her time. Now I understand what she was trying to do. I too am always trying to help people understand Hawaiian music. You can’t get mad with

people if you don’t take the time to explain Hawaiian culture to them. We all need to take care of Hawaii, and if you don’t understand [its culture], how can you take care of it?” The first step in implementing this ideal goes back to that heavy, “very carefully thought-out project,” her hands again falling into a gentle, subconscious mime of carrying something precious. “What I’m alluding to is that I’m working on this full-blown island music album,” Hanaiali‘i says of her next album, to be produced by Fiji. “You’re going to know it’s me, it’s going to have ha‘i in it, but it’s going to let the younger generations know that you can do anything. I want younger generations to know how important their history is—because they’re the next ones to step up.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music38

Stupid Good ‘Time’ Check your brain at the door—and laugh your ass off Hot Tub Time Machine

★★★★★

How to make loser soup.

Rated R/100 min.

A

fter months of tantalizingly hilarious teaser trailers and the promise of a brilliantly stupid, frat-boy comedy classic, here it is: Hot Tub Time Machine. In the proud tradition of Dude, Where’s My Car? and Snakes on a Plane, the title is also the synopsis. Four down-on-their-luck friends (John Cusack, Rob Corrdry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke) head to the mountains for a weekend getaway and discover a hot tub that hurtles them back to 1986. It’s as dependably goofy, raunchy, profane and juvenile as you’d expect—and maybe even more so. Within the first 15 minutes, you’ve got jokes about poop, urine and every other bodily secretion, plus dialogue seasoned so heavily with the “F”-word, you’d think the screenwriters were gunning for a Guinness Book record. I know this is supposed to be a so-stupid-its-funny farce,

18 April 1, 2010

but it’s often so childish, it makes The Hangover look like Annie Hall. Cusack has some funny moments late in the film when his character finally cuts loose, but he stays firmly committed to his sad-sack demeanor, killing any chance of a great Cusack comedic turn. He was much funnier in the films he actually made during the ’80s. Instead, the movie belongs to Corddry, who steals every scene he’s in. This is also a great showcase for Robinson,

who’s hilarious on TV’s The Office but hasn’t had a big-screen role that taps his deadpan delivery—until now. The scene where he makes an angry phone call to a girl who broke his heart is one of the film’s gut-busting best. I grew up watching Chevy Chase films and was disappointed that he’s so ill-used here; his character, a sort of all-knowing time keeper, isn’t well defined and tries too hard to squeeze easy laughs. Other

’80s-movie alumni who make cameos include an almost unrecognizable William Zabka, playing a grown-up version of the bully he embodied in The Karate Kid, and Crispin Glover, a riot as a hotel bellboy. Glover, best known for playing George McFly in Back to the Future, goes for comedy gold and scores in a film-length running gag that is totally tasteless but had me all but rolling in the aisle. There are a few clever time-travel continuity gags, but the screenplay could have used more smarts. Nothing approaches the innovative playfulness of Back to the Future or even the Bill and Ted movies. What the movie does have is a lot of heart, more nostalgic jokes than a season of I Love the ’80s and an ending that makes perfect use of “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads. It’s not art, but if you remember the ’80s with affection, you’ll have as much fun as I did. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film38

Enduring more than most could fathom, eight-year old Jacquline Wenzler-Steves, daughter of Annette and Maui firefighter Vince Steves, has, for three-years, battled Ewing’s Sarcoma—a rare, aggressive form of bone cancer. Fourteen rounds of heavy chemotherapy and eight surgeries—one to replace half of her pelvis—took place during Jacquline’s first year of treatment alone. When a tumor, pressing heavily on her nerves, began growing on her spine during the spring of 2009, she suffered a major relapse that led to even more chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries. Except for two all-too brief periods of reprieve—during which Jacquline was able to engage in therapy and re-learn how to walk, and even horseback ride—her young life has been shadowed by excruciating pain. As a cancer patient (soon survivor!) myself, I have an inkling of Jacquline’s strife (as pianist Andrew McMahon describes in his song, “Hammer and Strings,” about his own battle with leukemia, “no peace, just clicking machines”), and how such circumstances create severe financial crisis. The Steves ohana has exhausted their savings and the therapy required for Jacquline’s recovery is not covered by insurance. You can help by attending the benefit “An Evening for Jacquline,” with entertainment by The Neverminds, Let the Grass Grow and The Worrell Family Band. All donations taken at the door will benefit Jacquline, who will turn nine years old on April 16. As with the American Cancer Society, which proudly proclaims to be the “official sponsor of birthdays,” let’s all pitch in to make sure Jacqueline has many more. 4jacquline.com, 575-5432 ext. 17

If it seems like there aren’t any good fish in the sea, maybe you aren’t using the right bait—or are fishing in the wrong pond. Let me help you out: This weekend, stop by the 2nd annual More Fish in the Sea Ocean Awareness Fair to meet lots of environmentally conscious peeps, check out their hands-on activities and educational booths and get invites to beach cleanups, reef surveys and the like. “Last year, more than 2,000 people attended our event at MCC. We had a great time and many people really got how connected the land and sea are—especially on islands,” says Hannah Bernard, one of the event coordinators and president of the Hawaii Wildlife Fund. “This year, we hope to highlight those community groups and organizations that are helping to recover the health of our ocean by the work they do on land and near shore.” Once you find a fish you like, head indoors to the Cary & Eddie’s Banquet room to turn out the lights and tune into the More Fish in the Sea Film Festival, starting at 2pm and organized by Jazz Alley TV. Oren Masserman of Barefoot Minded, along with other musicians, will be out on the lawn livening up the festival with tunes, including Masserman’s new release, aptly titled “Ocean.” 280-8124 or e-mail wild@aloha.net [Sierra Brown]

Easter Roundup

Band Geeks Unite!

Friday-Sunday (April 2-4)

Tuesdays (April 6, 13 & 27) at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului

Halloween gets all the glory as a candy-gathering holiday, but Easter’s no slouch either. And for kids with a sweet tooth, there are many ways to collect goodies this Easter. Stop by the Keiki Zone during the Maui County Agricultural Festival at Maui Tropical Plantation for a five-year-old and under Easter egg hunt at noon and six-to-ten-year-old hunt at 12:45pm, Saturday, April 3. Maui Thing in Wailuku is organizing lots of free activities, including “making reusable bag art” from 9am-1pm and “plant your own garden” from 1pm-4pm, as well as games and a chance to win a $100 Maui Thing gift certificate. For a small fee, there will also be horseback rides operated by Thompson Ranch and the Maui Tropical Plantation Tram Tour. Unity Church will host an egg hunt at 10am, April 4 at the Filipino Community Center in Kahului, with brunch served for $10. Kings Cathedral/First Assembly Church hosts multiple hunts: 8am at Lahaina Recreational Park; noon at Kalama Park in Kihei; and 4pm at Pukalani Park on April 2; and 10am at Keoupualani Park on April 3. The church will also present His Hands: The Musical April 2-4, 7pm. $10 for adults, $5 for children. Keeping with the theatrical theme, head over to Iao Theater at 7pm on April 2 to watch the classic bunny-themed movie Harvey for free. The show will be accompanied by a bottomless bag of popcorn and “big kids” egg hunt. The Easter Bunny also plans to do a lot of party-hopping this weekend: Friday, April 2, he’ll be at the Kaahumanu Center for photo shoots starting at 10am; on April 3 he’s hosting a breakfast buffet at the Hard Rock Café from 8:30-11am, adults $20, kids $15. Finally, you can celebrate the start of spring at the Maui Orchid Society’s annual Easter Orchid Show & Plant Sale on April 1-2 from 9am-6pm, as well as April 3 from 9am-4pm. [SB]

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to become close friends with a band geek without actually becoming one yourself, you understand that they are, deep down, extremely cool people. I know one who proudly hangs five guitars, alto and tenor saxophones, a penny whistle, flute, electric keyboard, harmonica and another instrument that I don’t even know what to call on his wall. On a regular basis (every third day) he asks me to move out so that he can use my space to build a soundproof music room with eggcarton walls. The fundamental difference between the band geek and the poser-rocker is that the band geek’s coolness factor starts off right above the kid with the green mole in sixth grade and rises exponentially with age as he logs one professional and academic achievement after another. Meanwhile, the poser-rocker peaks at 17 when he plays at his high school prom, and will be found ten years later eating Spaghetti-Os out of a can and getting a few unfortunately stuck in his gelled hair in a basement somewhere. All that said, there really is no better way to spend your next few Tuesday evenings than watching the Maui Spring Band Concert Series at the MACC. Maui High School Band performs Tuesday, April 6 at 7pm. King Kekaulike High School Band performs Tuesday, April 13 at 7pm. Kalama Intermediate School Band performs Tuesday, April 27, at 6:30pm. 242-7469 or mauiarts.org [SB]

Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) A genie presents you this bum deal: “I’ll grant three wishes, only here’s the catch: in order to make room for the new thing, I’m going to take its balance away from the rest of your life.” I wouldn’t blame you if you said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” However, there’s something to this harsh arrangement—if you want something new in your life, you must actively and consciously make space for it before it’ll show up on the scene. Start doing that. Sure, you could wait for a genie to appear and do it for you, but this way’s faster, more reliable, and best of all: you get to choose what you cut out.

SIGN

AGE LANGU

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Legends of Sirens depicted women (sometimes part bird, sometimes part fish) who lured men (usually sailors) to watery graves with the irresistible call of their song. Odysseus of Greek mythology, was curious as to what they sounded like, and so ordered his men’s ears stopped with beeswax, and had himself bound to the mast of his ship so that he could hear them. Once entranced, he ordered his men to free him, but they didn’t do so until they were out of earshot of the Sirens. This precaution saved his life—a similar one may save yours. I think you should indulge your curiosity—what’s life good for, if not experiencing things?—but you should do so wisely and safely.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) As a child I was fascinated with a talk show which featured people with synaesthesia—a neurological condition that crosses one sensation with another. “New York tastes like burnt toast,” and “The number zero smells like the ocean,” were phrases I found compellingly beautiful. You can’t actually cross your wires like that, but you would benefit from simulating something along those lines. Create unusual associations between things you love. If you can get to the point where commonplace sensations like smelling gasoline and tasting root beer can vividly remind you of something you adore, you’ll be a happier person.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This week it’s important for you to step outside your comfort zone. Unfortunately, no one’s more comfortable in a rut than a Cancer—so it’s harder for you to do what’s necessary to get yourself out. Don’t tell me: “It’s not so bad here.” While that may be true, it is still by definition a rut, and things could (and should) be a lot better. Upgrading your quality of life isn’t so hard; it just requires that you’re willing to do stuff that you historically haven’t been that keen on—taking the initiative and stepping up.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) For almost three decades, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal. Recently, their dispute was resolved by global warming; rising sea levels completely submerged the place—it is, effectively, no more. This elegant solution to their ridiculous quarrel has bearing on your own life. The thing you’re clinging to is about as useful as a barren rock island, if you really think about it—besides, if you waste much more time with this impasse, it’s likely to disappear as entirely as if a whole ocean came and covered it over. Compromise or let go, already.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) In old school mythology from various cultures, gods walked among, tricked, seduced, and screwed humans. While this lead to fantastic tales, it was also cruelly unfair to the humans involved, who were quite simply not on the same playing field. Instead of co-players in the game, they were, effectively, pawns. Unfortunately, something akin to that scenario is playing out here. Although the stakes aren’t as high, and the roles not so extreme, those playing with you don’t exactly view you as an equal. Thus your duty is clear; either prove them wrong and beat them at their own game, or walk away before you get hurt.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Just because you’re kind of a princess doesn’t mean you need to be snobby, formal, imperious, or fragile. Unfortunately, all those adjectives are sometimes used to describe Libras. However, all these also apply: friendly, generous, bold, playful, creative, diplomatic, optimistic, and engaging. There are plenty of new people in your life who don’t know you well enough to form an opinion one way or another. Make sure they get to know this warmer, more beautiful side; this week, be the kind of royalty that doesn’t think twice about rough and tumble play with the unwashed masses— the kind of princess who makes everyone (s)he talks to feel like nobility, not servants.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Musician Ben Folds visited chatroulette (which randomly connects you with other video chat users) at one of his concerts. People who chose to log on suddenly found themselves in a concert hall with two thousand people and a musician singing to them. (The video is awesome, by the way.) I love how most people take it in stride (even if they’re on the toilet!); even though they may have logged on to masturbate or flirt, they found themselves celebrated, entertained, and cheered instead. See if you can supersede or confound people’s expectations in a similar way this week. You’ll find that you’re not only good at it—it’s also tremendously fun.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Build a fence made of human skulls and bones, and see how amazingly differently various people will see it. A cynical sort might see it as a morbid reminder of life’s brevity. Someone ecologically-minded could view it as a thrifty use of elegant building materials—very environmental! A post-modern neohippy could see it as a hardcore affirmation of the interconnectedness of all things. My point is, no matter what you do, how it’s viewed will be more influenced by where other people are coming from than by your own intentions. Don’t worry about them. Where you’re coming from might be more or less irrelevant to them, but it’s still most important for the person who matters most, in this case: you.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Even agnostic or atheistic parents must contemplate strangely religious subjects such as whether or not to celebrate Christmas (which is pagan at its roots, and mostly a commercial celebration of capitalism, in any case), and whether or not to tell their kids Santa isn’t real. Knowing what you believe doesn’t always make it easy to share those beliefs; living in the complex world we inhabit makes it more subtle and complicated than you’d at first think. In many of the scenarios you encounter this week, there’s no black and white, easy decision—most of the threads you tug could unravel many others. Take your time.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) If it takes 24-hour surveillance for you to be able to trust someone, the issue isn’t them—it’s you. That’s not to say they’re automatically trustworthy—it’s that it doesn’t matter how honest and dependable they are; they’ll surely crack under the pressure of a paranoid freak. Most relationships require a good deal of faith and trust, and most of that must come from you. Recognize that you may simply be unready to put that kind of confidence in someone, or at least in this particular someone; at that point the kindest thing to do is to take yourself out of the equation (and explain why).

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Recently I bonded with a Virgo friend about the joys of having a plan, and the necessity of sometimes letting it go. You’re generally good at the letting go part—it’s the making and sticking to a plan part that you occasionally suck at. This is a good week to practice that skill. Get some help if you need to; enlist someone who’s capable and willing to keep you on track. Let them help you come up with a plan and then crack the whip to make sure you follow through on it. You’ll never lose your aptitude for letting go—this week concentrate on your ability to hang on.
