The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL Not sure if you heard, but Apple released a new product last week. Can’t remember what it’s called—they should really ramp up their marketing. All kidding aside, the feverishly anticipated iPad arrived with a local connection: a Maui-based visitor pub is on a short list of companies— about two dozen—to roll out approved apps for the new device. James Quine, publisher of Maui Island Guide & Driving Magazine, had the app developed specifically for the iPad; the experience is touted as a more interactive version of the magazine. Whether this is a new way forward for the publishing industry or, as Salon CEO Richard Gingras put it, “a fatal distraction” remains to be seen. But it’s always cool when Maui is part of the conversation…. According to the latest figures from the state Department of Business, Tourism and Economic Development, a lot of Mauians, especially in the County’s rural reaches, aren’t mailing back their Census forms. As of April 5, East Maui and Molokai were in the 0-40 percent return category (see By the Numbers, page 8), meaning even in the best-case scenario less than half of residents have responded. The irony, of course, is that rural communities will suffer most from inaccurate population counts. As previously noted in this space (and in the massive Census outreach campaign), federal funds and governmental representation are at stake. Or, if you believe Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota, it’s all (possibly) part of a plot to bring back internment camps. Discussing the matter with FOX News last June, Bachmann said that in the 1940s “the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt, and that’s how the Japanese were

rounded up and put into the internment camps.” She did add the caveat, “I’m not saying that that’s what the Administration is planning to do,” but anyone who says “I’m not saying” is always, in fact, saying. And Bachmann isn’t the only one. Texas

least one of the above bills could generate millions of dollars in tax revenue and another deals with fundamental civil rights, but never mind all that—they’ve got bigger fish to fry! So I assume we can expect the important work and bright

“Those of us from the Baby Boom generation are thinking of marijuana as it was when we were in college,” said Gov. Lingle. Congressman (and Hawaii golden boy) Ron Paul offered his two cents (though not from the Federal Reserve!), telling the Houston Chronicle that “the invasive nature of the Census raises serious questions about how and why government will use the collected information.” Apparently Paul’s peeps are listening, because some rural Texas counties have reported Census returns as low as 5 percent. This could end up costing Texas seats in traditionally deep-red districts, thus counterproductively (or productively, depending on your perspective) decreasing the influence of people like Paul and Bachmann. In case anyone needs a reminder, the Census is mandated by the Constitution, so if it is in fact a nefarious government plot, the conspiracy runs deep….

LOCAL Good news—Hawaii lawmakers are done messing around. “[Legislators] have killed proposals dealing with casinos, medical marijuana, cockfighting, flag-flying, foie gras and civil unions,” declared an April 4 AP dispatch. “We’ve kept our eye on the ball,” House Majority Leader Blake Oshiro is quoted as saying. Sure, at

ideas to start…now. Now? Anyone?…. Speaking of the medical marijuana bill: before it died in committee, Gov. Lingle warned of its dangers during remarks to the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce on the Big Island. In a video posted at bigislandvideonews.com, Lingle tells the Chamber that in California there are now “more marijuana stores than McDonald’s and Starbucks.” That oft-repeated “fact” has been disputed, but even if it’s true, what’s the point? McDonald’s and Starbucks sell addictive and physically harmful products, and yet if they were shut down people would still find ways to consume triple mocha lattes and double cheeseburgers. Isn’t that an argument in favor of regulation and taxation? Lingle also told the Chamber that today’s weed is more potent than the stuff of yesteryear (another worn-out, discredited argument). “Those of us from the Baby Boom generation are thinking of marijuana as it was when we were in college,” she said, “and so maybe we’re not as upset about this. [But] the chemical component, the drug in marijuana in the years that we were in college was 2-3 percent. Now, it’s 26 percent…this is a

very powerful drug.” Apparently Lingle had a lousy dealer in college…. Got a press release from Keep Hawaii United about the state GOP’s new platform. Keep Hawaii United is excited about something that’s being removed—a line implying support for the Akaka Bill— but I’m more interested in the five “core principles” that remain: “liberty, limited government, individual responsibility, fiscal accountability and equality of opportunity.” The only thing I’d add is an asterisk next to the first three and the last one that says, “*except in the case of gay people who want to get married.”…. Bit of intrigue in the race to fill Neil Abercrombie’s vacated 1st District seat, as Sen. Dan Inouye has thrown his support behind state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa and, more to the point, against fellow Dem Ed Case. Inouye has a grudge against Case for challenging Sen. Dan Akaka in ’06. That’s not speculation; Inouye said so himself. “Part of it is personal,” he told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “I don’t like the way he proceeded to run against Dan Akaka.” Case’s retort: “Unfortunately, it appears Sen. Inouye took [it] personally that I did not ask his permission.” Snappy sound bite, but if you’re looking to get back into national politics, locking horns with an influential eight-term Senator from your own party may not be the swiftest course….

NOT LOCAL OK, one final dig at the anti-Census crowd, courtesy of The Onion. A Census “infographic” posted in March asks, “What information are they trying to keep private?” One of the answers: “Whether they rent or own their heavily armed secessionist compound.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut39

LCWATCH: First Time for Everything T

he prospect of attending a Department of Liquor Control meeting on April Fools’ Day was too tempting to pass up. So even though there were only two cases on the Adjudication docket and I had other work piling up at the office, I trekked over to the David K. Trask Building in Wailuku. Turns out I got to see something I’ve never seen in nearly two years covering the LC—and it happened twice. The meeting was unusual before it began, in that neither case featured a minor decoy sting. Instead, the Adjudication Board considered a noise complaint against Oceans Bar & Grill in Kihei and an underage-serving charge against Cheeseburger Island Style in Wailea. First the Oceans case: Seems the bar has been keeping firemen at the Kihei Fire Station awake at night, to the point where they called the LC. According to an account read by Deputy Prosecutor

John Tam, LC Officer Chad Gardanier was dispatched to measure noise decibels at the fire station, which is about 200 feet from Oceans. On two separate occasions, the noise level exceeded the allowable limit, which for a Class A zoning district is 45 decibels or three decibels above the ambient noise level (if you’re confused don’t worry—so was the board). The first time, Oceans was warned; the second time, they were cited. Owner Todd Hull said all the right things. He explained that Oceans now keeps its windows and doors shut during shows and has purchased a sound meter. He was humble and apologetic, and expressed sympathy for the firemen, who he said he “certainly [wasn’t] trying to upset. Still, it seemed inevitable he’d be hit with a fine. Even when Tam recommended a written reprimand, I still didn’t think the board would go for it. But—after a relatively brief deliberation—they did. And they weren’t done.

The next case involved two teenage girls who entered Cheeseburger Island Style, located at the Shops at Wailea, and ordered a Shirley Temple and a virgin lava flow. When the drinks arrived, according to Tam’s report, one of the girls thought she tasted booze in her lava flow. She flagged down a waitress and asked for another one. Confusion ensued, and a second drink that may or may not have contained alcohol was brought to the table then quickly taken back, and a virgin drink finally delivered. By this time the first drink had been consumed, though Tam said it wasn’t clear exactly when or by whom. When their check arrived, the girls were charged for two regular lava flows. Later, the mother of the girl who ordered the drink returned to complain and was given a full refund. Then she contacted the LC. A lawyer representing the restaurant pinned the blame on the waitress, who he said “pressed the wrong button when placing the order and ignored protocol

when she realized what had happened. He also said she was four months pregnant at the time, but that she was fired anyway. Cheeseburger Island Style was charged with two counts: serving a minor and failing to properly check ID. This time, Tam recommended a $2,000 fine, $1,000 suspended for the first count, and a $500 fine for the second. The board deliberated, then announced its decision: $2K, $1K suspended for the first, and, you guessed it, a written reprimand for the second. I wish I could say this unprecedented double-dose of mercy was met by gasps from the gallery, but by that time it was just me and the Cheeseburger Island Style guys, who were quickly heading for the door, presumably before the board could change its mind. I didn’t get a good look, but it appeared one of them was smiling— another first. â–

PISSING CONTEST

The entertainment manager at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England, announced in February a contest seeking foul-smelling urine. The park has introduced a live action horror maze based on scenes from the Saw movie series and decided that it was missing a “signature stench to “really push the boundaries of disgustingness. Manager Laura Sinclair suggested that submissions’ pungency would be enhanced after consumption of such foods as garlic and asparagus and offered a prize of the equivalent of about $750 for the winning urine.

EVERYTHING’S BIGGER IN TEXAS— INCLUDING INJUSTICE In March, juries in Smith County and Matagorda County in Texas sentenced Henry Wooten and Melvin Johnson III to 35 years and 60 years in prison, respectively, for possessing small amounts of drugs (but enough under state law to allow jurors to infer an intent to distribute). Wooten, 54, had 4.6 ounces of marijuana (same penalty as for 5 pounds), and Johnson had 1.3 grams of crack cocaine (about half the weight of a U.S. dime). (Wooten’s prosecutor actually had asked the jury for a sentence of 99 years.)

WELFARE THEE WELL Under the British government’s Local Housing Authority, Essma Marjam, age 34, unemployed and the mother of six, is entitled to rental assistance for a fivebedroom home, and the only suitable one she could find is in an exclusive London suburb in which her neighbor is Sir Paul McCartney. Luckily, the generous allowance (equivalent of more than $9,000 a month) covers the rent on the nearly $3 million (U.S. equivalent) mansion. (Additionally, according to the Daily Mail, Marjam’s non-housing government benefits total the equivalent of about $22,000 a year.)

In February, the undergraduate dean’s office at Yale University disclosed that it was formally soliciting anonymous, first-person reports of student sexual experiences to publish on a school Web site, as “strategies for creatively navigating Yale’s sexual culture, according to an advisor. “There is a real need for students to have space to think about what happens to them and what they want to have happen, she said. “Sex@ Yale would contain “70 to 80 specific perspectives, she said, but critics suggested the anthology might grow to resemble Penthouse magazine’s often-ridiculed “Forum section of lascivious fantasies.

SUB-ZERO TOLERANCE Seventh-grader Rachael Greer was suspended from River Valley Middle School in Jefferson, Indiana, in February, even though she apparently did exactly what her parents and the school want kids to do (“just say ‘no’ to drugs). When a classmate handed her a prescription pill in gym class, she immediately handed it right back. Nonetheless, an assistant principal, after investigating the incident, suspended her for five days because she had touched the pill. (He expressed regret but said it is school policy.)

LESS MONEY, LESS PROBLEMS A recent epiphany caused millionaire Austrian businessman Karl Rabeder, 47, to be depressed about his wealth, and by February, he was in the process of giving away an estate worth the equivalent of about $5 million. Two luxury properties are for sale, with proceeds going to charities he established in Central and South America, and he plans to move into a small hut in Innsbruck. “Money is counterproductive, he told a reporter. “I had the feeling I was working as a slave for things that I did not wish or need.

Re the April 1 feature “Theyy Fixed Health Care‌April Fools’!â€?: Has this paper ever written a fair article? I guess I don’t understand if this meant to be a liberal-only paper. It seems every article gets worse and worse. Was this an editorial? I don’t agree with the assumption that all “corporateâ€? companies are bad. HAWAIIAN MONK SEALS ARE DISAPPEARING.

CAN THEY BEAT THE ODDS?

OUR SEALS BY ROB PARSONS

A

dozen years ago I met a strapping young man, just out of high school and working as first mate on a snorkel cruise boat. Much to my amazement, one of his duties on daily excursions to Molokini was to discourage a rambunctious teenage monk seal, known for making amorous advances on unsuspecting tourists. I had read about “Humpy,” as the seal was dubbed, and his interactions with surprised swimmers, mainly in the Makena area of South Maui. Agencies responded to the ongoing incidents by relocating the frisky seal to Kaho‘olawe. But within days, the seal had returned and was frequenting Molokini islet, with its hundreds of daily snorkelers and divers. While some visitors were undoubtedly thrilled to encounter the rare pinniped, they may not have been aware of the dangers associated. To humans, yes, as seals are known to nip or bite. But much more so to the seal.

EXTREME PERIL

Hawaiian Monk Seals have swum the oceans for millions of years, even pre-dating the formation of the main Hawaiian Islands. Now, though federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, these kama‘aina marine mammals are imperiled, with the long-term survival of the species uncertain. Whether federal agencies, marine biologists, state legislators and volunteers can bolster declining birth rates and prevent further senseless killings of the docile animals remains to be seen. The odds appear long. But there is a “glimmer of hope,” according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

HUMAN KILLINGS

Monk seals have faced dire threats before and recovered. After being hunted to near extinction—only 23 seals were counted in 1890—their numbers rebounded to more than 900 adults by 1960. Monk seals were slaughtered in great numbers during the 19th century at the same time the whaling industry thrived. A sealing and exploring voyage by Captain N.C. Brooks of the Gambia spent three months in the Leeward Islands during the summer of 1859, and returned to Honolulu with 240 barrels of seal oil and 1,500 skins. It is reported that King Kamehameha IV visited Nihoa in 1857, officially annexing it for the Hawaiian Kingdom. An excerpt from the log of the Manuokawai reads, “At 10am went ashore…About a dozen seal were on shore and the King shot several of them.” Fast-forward a century-and-a-half. Despite endangered species status, two female monk seals were shot to death on Kauai last year, with a third death on Molokai deemed intentional but currently unresolved. In May 2009, RK06, a pregnant female known to have borne five previous offspring, was found shot to death at Pila‘a Beach on Kauai’s north shore. A month earlier RK19, a five year old male was fatally shot and found at Kaumakani on the island’s west side. Last September, a 78-year old man pleaded

guilty, claiming he fired four shots from his .22-caliber rifle only to scare the mother seal away so she wouldn’t steal fish from the nets he was about to throw in the ocean. Though his violation of the Endangered Species Act was a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $50,000 fine, the man was sentenced to a 90-day jail term and a year of supervised release. No suspects were charged in the other killing. The seriousness of the incidents wasn’t lost on state legislators, however. Kauai Sen. Gary Hooser introduced SB2441, which raises the penalty for intentionally killing or harming monk seals to a Class C felony, with up to a $100,000 fine and a 40-year jail term. Rep. Hermina Morita introduced a similar measure, HB2235, which includes a

site education and outreach. At the time a pup is weaned, measurements are taken and a flipper tag may be attached. In the case of the Hana pup, named RO15, a satellite tag was also attached to track his movements. Though the mother seal sometimes leaves her pup on its own after weaning, both seals have been seen in the East Maui area. Another offspring born a couple miles away did not survive. Davis ran through the protocol when a seal is “hauled up, the term for time spent basking on a sandy or cobbled beach or on lava shoreline. “We set up barrier tape at a distance of 150 feet—more for a mom and pup, she said. “A person should not make eye contact or loud noises. Don’t interact, feed, play with or pet the seals.

of a 1983 study, has an alarming cover, featuring a monk seal juxtaposed against a graph showing sharply declining population figures—from 1,400 just a decade ago to between 1,000-1,100. (In a cruel twist, the juvenile seal in the photo, photographed during its six-week nursing period on an Oahu beach, was found three months later, tragically drowned in a gill net.) To reclassify the species from “endangered to “threatened would require a three-fold increase in the current population, the report states. Four key strategies are outlined to move the species toward recovery. At the top of the list is improving the survival rate of females, particularly juveniles. This could be achieved through maintaining

Sen. Mike Gabbard brought forth a pair of bills aimed at informing visitors about monk seals as well as the beaches and coastal ecosystems. Rep. Denny Coffman issued a House version that would require flights to Hawaii to carry a public service video on endangered species. “Passing this legislation will send a message that the people of Hawaii will not stand by and allow individuals to take their anger out on innocent animals, Hooser said in a statement.

PROTECTION EFFORTS

As monk seal pup numbers continue to rise in the main Hawaiian Islands, with 15 births documented last year, there will be a greater need for education. “We need to learn coexistence, said Schofield. “More seals will mean more interaction and more displacement. The main Hawaiian Islands may provide a foothold for recovery. We’re trying to build capacity for paid positions— island-wide coordinators—and also involve the community as volunteers. Nicole Davis works as one of Schofield’s regional coordinators. She maintains a 24hour hotline, supervises citizen volunteers and tracks all monk seals on Maui, monitoring their movements. Her data is reported to NOAA’s Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center, which also deals with emergency circumstances, such as when a seal is found with a fishhook in its mouth. Davis was a primary responder to a newborn seal at Koki Beach in Hana this year. She helped set up warning tape and monitored the mother and pup from sunup to sundown, developing a new team of East Maui volunteers. “The Maui Marine Mammal Response Program wouldn’t be a success without our partner agencies and awesome volunteers, said an enthusiastic Davis. “We have such a good network of volunteer responders, who also provide on-

For a person spotting a seal while in the water, she advised, “If the seal approaches you, move away. Head for shore. Biologist Bill Gilmartin began studying Hawaiian monk seals in 1978, investigating die-offs on Laysan Island. He worked with the National Marine Fisheries Service from 1980 until his retirement in 1995, serving as a vital member of the Monk Seal Recovery Team (MSRT). The MSRT pushed for greater measures to aid survival of seal pups and launched efforts in the ’80s ’90s to relocate newly weaned pups, allowing them to grow and fatten in captivity before returning to the wild. In 1994, Gilmartin and his team relocated 21 adult males to the main Hawaiian Islands to prevent aggressive “mobbing behavior during breeding season that sometimes injures or kills females in estrus. Following his “retirement from NMFS, Gilmartin and fellow scientist Hannah Bernard formed the Hawaii Wildlife Fund in 1996, primarily to address gaps in recovery efforts for endangered hawksbill turtles and monk seals. Both believe that partnership with the community is key. “We’ve seen an increase of larger, healthier animals in the main [Hawaiian] Islands, said Gilmartin. “With that, there will continue to be more on our beaches. More education will allow for collaboration. “Monk seals are one of the canaries in the coal mine, said Bernard. “They are an indicator of how we have disrupted and altered the overall ocean ecosystem. The extinction of the Caribbean monk seal happened in our lifetime [last sighting was in 1952]. We need dramatic intervention to ensure success.

A PLAN

The Monk Seal Recovery Team released a white paper in 2007, detailing threats and trends and issuing a roadmap for species recovery. The Recovery Plan for the Hawaiian Monk Seal, actually a revision

and improving conservation and research efforts, intervening when appropriate, continuing protection from aggressive males and sharks and removing marine debris. The recommendations also urge extensive field presence during breeding season for monitoring and research, and reducing the probability of infectious disease. “The big problem,â€? Gilmartin emphasized, “is low productivity [in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands]. These seals don’t live past a few years of age, don’t reach maturity, don’t breed. There are almost no young females reaching reproductive age.â€? Gilmartin and others on the MSRT have pushed for help with survival of young animals in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, as they did with fatten and release programs in the 80s and 90s. He said that the California Marine Mammal Center is doing private fundraising to build a facility at NELHA on the Big Island for that purpose. Hawaii Wildlife Fund is accepting tax-deductible donations to support that goal. Will agency efforts, private funding, volunteer kokua and community education be enough? Can monk seals be pulled back from the brink yet again? “I’m hoping [the population] will stabilize,â€? said a somber Gilmartin, “but it hasn’t yet.â€? â–

808 All Day

Owner Josh Richardson with the Maui Cordon Bleu.

Popular sandwich guys try out a bigger location and a whole new menu 808 Bistro 2511 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei Open 5-9pm daily 879-8008

Y

ou probably know Josh Richardson and Mitch Edwards as the guys behind 808 Deli, the popular little sandwich joint next to Fred’s/Moose’s on South Kihei Road. Now they’re branching out, moving into the spacious confines formerly occupied by the now-defunct Greek Bistro. The new venture—dubbed 808 Bistro—is good enough to lure patrons away from the long wait for Taco Tuesday at Fred’s. 808 Bistro has open-verandah seating with modern, sleek wooden tables and nice sunset views. Once seated, you’re served toasted bread and exemplary creamy pesto butter. Appetizers run the gamut: baked crab dip, buffalo shrimp with gorgonzola cream dipping sauce, Johnny Wellington, smoked salmon and steak kabobs. There were three in our party, so we opted for the crab dip, served with a toasted baguette, and the Johnny Wellington. The dip was rich, with the shrimp flavor standing out the most. Though it paired well with the crunchiness of the baguette, I preferred the dip by itself to let all the flavors come through. Meanwhile, the Johnny Wellington—lamb in a puff pastry served with tzaziki (yogurt and cucumber) and mint sauce—was delicious. The lamb was cooked to perfection and paired perfectly with the tzaziki sauce. Richardson suggested the Maui Cordon

Bleu—herbed panko-crusted chicken breast stuffed with ham, Swiss, spinach and a fresh pineapple glaze. The ham, Swiss and spinach complemented the juiciness of the chicken, but it could’ve used more of the pineapple glaze. We also tried the mahi mahi, served with jasmine rice and vegetable du jour with a choice of three sauces; we selected the restic tomato buerre blanc. Fish: flaky and cooked perfectly. Vegetable du jour: delicious, sautéed veggie sticks. Sauce: creamy and ties it all together. Finally, we sampled the New York Steak, served with bleu cheese apple gratin and vegetable du jour. The steak came medium rare and was accompanied by a balsamic vinaigrette mushroom reduction. It was one of the best sauces I’ve tried on Maui—and I’m not usually a fan of mushrooms. For heart-healthy foodies there are a variety of soups (the carrot, coconut curry sounds the best) and salads. Have a sweet tooth? How does lilikoi cheesecake or sorbet sound? Macadamia nut gelato? Sweet Hawaiian bread pudding? During dinner, I spoke to a couple that has been to the restaurant three times since it opened (808 Bistro is only three weeks old). I asked them what brought them back. “It’s like eating at a gourmet restaurant at half the cost,” they said. They also praised the staff, and even said they liked the current BYOB policy. Richardson and Edwards personally visit each table with a smile; you truly get a sense of the owners and the restaurant. “It’s about

the atmosphere,” Richardson said. “We greet everyone, serve excellent ingredients and bus tables ourselves. Everyone leaves happy.” ■

W

hen you’ve gigged at the White House and guitar god Joe Satriani says he loves your technique—so much he “might steal it”— you know you’re onto something. A contributor to two Grammy-nominated albums—volumes I and II of Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Master Series—and twice winner at the Hawaii Music Awards, Makana has earned nods from the pick gods and ink from the likes of the New York Times and Esquire, which in 2003 gushed that “slack-key guitar music, indigenous to Hawaii, has been around longer than the blues, and Makana is considered the greatest living player.” Bronzed and debonair, Makana may be a darling for the camera, but it’s his picking pedigree (groomed from an early age by legends like Sonny Chillingworth and Gabby Pahinui), along with his genre-bending brand of rock and world music dubbed “Slack Rock,” that has rendered him the new ambassador of Hawaii’s hallmark detuned tone. This, in an age where slack key’s mechanics—let alone history—still require explanation outside the 808. “Slack key playing involves a ‘slacking’ of the strings to make an open chord. That means you don’t have to hold that chord, so your hand is freed up,” Makana explained in an interview with Guitar Player. “Then you

establish a bass with your thumb and over that, a melody. It’s doing multiple parts on an opened-tuned guitar.” It’s information Makana finds himself doling out a lot and that GP finds readerworthy enough to land Makana a half-page highlight in their February 2010 issue. Makana is no stranger to GP love. In 2008, he was one of just ten national finalists selected for the magazine’s Guitar Superstar competition. Held at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall, Makana was the first to take the stage before a panel of discerning six-stringers and ultimately placed third. “Your rhythm, timing and intonation is really nice, and it’s hard to fault anything,” said judge Steve Vai. “If I had to be critical, [while] I think what you’re playing is harmonically beautiful…my ear is always looking for something that’s more harmonically challenging—from Venus, you know?” There’s an interesting correlation between the terminology in Vai’s critique and Makana’s latest release, Venus, and the Sky Turns to Clay: The Instrumental World of Makana (2009). Makana’s prior work displays his soulful vocal talent, with upper register trills like honeycreepers’ wing beats, high, suave and sweet. But Venus is a treat for critics like me, who easily crinkle their nose at too-pedestrian lyrics but are suckers for all-instrumentals that showcase a player’s prodigiousness. Second only to Makana’s playing is his showmanship. The first time I saw him perform, his slack-key antics involved such voracious slides, I feared the strings might slit his wrists. It’s a gory image that might have complemented his tight leatherish

Rising slack-key star still has room to grow

pants—but remember, this is slack key. So, though energetic, his shows stay far away from the cattle-guard grind of the gear-head rock he credits as an influence. His abundantly spiritual side oozes thick in his impassioned performances, where even when flying solo, his full sound can fill a venue. And when melodies linger over building, open-tune bass lines, it’s like the first pass of an oscillating fan on a hot day. You can’t bust his chops about his chops, but since I first saw Makana a decade ago, I’ve found his garb to be a bit fulsome. My hang-up may be superficial, but it’s marred my most memorable Makana performance— when he opened for Elvis Costello at the MACC in 2006 (during which, with dramatic coincidence as his set completed, there was a citywide power failure and the Castle Theater’s emergency house lights rose to pale blue glow, and half of Costello’s set was conducted outside, to the backdrop of an indigo storm). Granted, the thrill of

the evening (and the will to forget) has left specifics murky, but I remember Makana’s threads strongly evoking the spirits of the mo‘o (giant lizard) gods. But, whatever. His fashion sense today— and the fact that we’ve come a long way since the dark designer days at the turn of the millennium—has quieted my nag. And it’s a nag I have only because—if Makana has been ordained the modern representative of slack key—lovers of all things local (like myself) need to cheer for him in every way. That said, I will side with Vai in that I’m desirous of something more extraterrestrial—but not so much harmonically as lyrically. For me, tracks like “Song for Sonny,” the final track on Master Series volume II—while a sweet shoutout to legendary Chillingworth—sound like a very literal homage to Olomana’s “Ku’u Home o Kahalu’u.” Likewise, his track “Only You,” feels like the bouncy but slightly unattractive love child of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and Cat Steven’s “Into White.” To be fair, my lyrical gripe is something I hold against all but a few. And I’m choosing to exercise this opinion now only because of my great faith in Makana’s promise and position. Much of the heritage and essence of slack key is still lost on many, including musical experts. Makana’s growing fame, youth and vigor should help change that. I’ll be rooting for him. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music39

‘Clash’ and Burn Skip the clunky remake and see the fun, corny, nudity-filled original instead Clash of the Titans

★★★★★

Man versus Greco-Roman column.

Rated PG13/118 min.

I

watched the original 1981 Clash of the Titans and its lavish remake back-toback, and it was like comparing a 1957 Ford Fairlane to a Ford Pinto: one is clearly a classic, while the other is a total bomb. Avatar stud-muffin Sam Worthington stars as Perseus, the son of Zeus, who leads a group of warriors on a quest to save a princess from being sacrificed to the Kraken, a mammoth sea creature. In order to defeat the Kraken, which resembles a reptilian Abe Vigoda, they must sever the head of Medusa, whose snake hair and killer stare make her a tough opponent. The original film was a corny Greek fantasy adventure, but it was cheerful, exciting and a brilliant showcase for Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion animation creatures, which still hold up almost three decades later. The remake, meanwhile, is joyless, takes itself way too seriously and is

18 April 8, 2010

filled with busy but seen-it-before f/x. This movie has no personality—it’s like the most uninteresting parts of every sword-andsandal epic have been fused together. The humans are interchangeable to the point where you won’t care, let alone notice, when someone important dies. In the 1981 version, Sir Laurence Olivier gamely played the god Zeus with a dry-ice machine and rock concert lighting standing in for his “lair.” Here, Liam Neeson plays the role on an over-lit set with pounds of

facial hair. He shares many scenes with an equally ample-bearded Ralph Fiennes, playing Hades, the god of fire. The brilliant stars of Schindler’s List are tripped up by their silly roles and come across like ZZ Top attempting Shakespearean dialogue. Worthington is getting less and less interesting with each film and I wonder if his 15 minutes will be up once he stars in a 2-D, non-“event” movie, where he won’t be able to glower at the camera and brood his way through a role.

Whereas Medusa and her knockout set piece were terrifying in the original film, she is now just a ho-hum CGI effect. Even a cool giant scorpion battle is little more than actors getting tossed around in the dirt. Fans of the original will fondly recall Bubo, an endearing robot owl who resembles R2-D2. He makes a quickie cameo here, but the movie could have used more of him. Even had I not seen the superior original (which, I might add, features two-headed dogs and tons of nudity and gore for a PG movie—awesome!), I still wouldn’t be impressed by this clunky remake. Like the 1998 Godzilla, with it’s over-reliance on CGI and lack of discernable plot, it proves bigger isn’t always better. (It’s worth noting, for those planning to see this purely for the 3-D, that the enhanced visuals appear slapped-on and are barely noticeable; it’s a rip-off in any format.) ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film39

This Week's Picks Arty Party

Friday (April 9) & Saturday (April 10) at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului

Sunday (April 11), 10am-5pm, University Hawaii Maui College, Kahului

It’s time to launch a new flavor of RockStar Energy Drink called “Red Rocker,” in honor of Sammy Hagar. The Red Rocker’s slogan is already the perfect tagline for a RockStar ad campaign: “Born to Rock. Built To Last. Pretty BadAss.” Now that Van Halen is no more, Hagar is touring as a solo artist, with The Wabos as his permanent touring band. BAMP Project brings us the iconic boxerturned-Rock ‘ Roll Hall of Famer— drink it up. Friday April 9; tickets $45, $55, or $65.On the heels of Hagar comes 311, the marijuanaloving, reggae-skanking, rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. 311 is the Omaha police code for indecent exposure, so consider yourself warned. Opening acts include Iration, known for their megahit “Falling,” and The Throwdowns. Saturday, April 10, tickets $35 advance, $40 at the gate. 242-SHOW or mauiarts.org [Sierra Brown]

The newly minted University of Hawaii Maui College presents “A Day of Culture and Art: A Celebration of Maui’s Multiculutural Community,” wherein Maui’s diverse mix of ethnicities will engage in performances and demonstrations to express their unique cultural practices. Groups from all over the island are going to get a half-hour or so in the spotlight throughout the day: MAPA Dance, Hawaiian Serenaders, Maui Taiko, Sarala Dance, Hawaii Ballroom Dance, Makawao Hongwanji Kendo and Good Shephard Filipino Dance Group. Jamallad and The Global Citizens, a local reggae/folk rock/ afro-pop band, is also set to play a few songs, hitting the stage at 2pm. The day will wrap up with a drama presentation, Transitions, from 4-5pm. Entries from Maui County Sister Cities Foundation and MOA of Hawaii art contests will be displayed, and winners announced. Also, the Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi Award will be given to a person who contributes to culture and arts in Maui County. So, school on a Sunday? Why not? 878-1866 or aecg.org [SB]

Going Coastal

Saturday (April 10), 11am-4pm, University of Hawaii Maui College, Kahului

Saturday (April 10), 5pm, Old Lahaina Luau

There is no better way to bring people together and create positives vibes than with shave ice. Add a jumping castle, games, prizes, ono food, live entertainment, a bike giveaway and safety course, and a legendary day is in the making. The Valley Isle Keiki Fest usually draws more than 6,000 attendees, half being children. For little keiki, it will be just as wondrous as Disneyland, minus the eternally long lines and slightly spooky giant mouse. We have the Kiwanis Club of the Valley Isle, Maui 4-H Organization, Education of Young Children Weekly Chapter, the Neighborhood Place of Wailuku and the County Department of Parks and Recreation to thank for this event, held in honor of The Month of the Young Child. You might even meet potential buddies for play groups, carpools and pool parties, so make sure to make an appearance. 250-2540 [SB]

Maui Coastal Land Trust might sound a little fuddy-duddy, but the name is misleading. A few years ago, I was unwittingly roped into volunteering at one of their “galas,” and was pleasantly surprised to discover that many of the event attendees had kept with the paniolo theme of the night and were dressed with boots and rhinestones to the hilt. This year’s Buy Back the Beach event will feature dancing and a live auction, with items including a heli-hike to the P‘u Kukui Forest Reserve, canoe surf with Dave Kalama, an all-inclusive weekend at a private 11-room ranch on Molokai. The music and food will be divine as always, Tony Takitani and Deidre Tegarden will emcee and Amy Hanaiali‘i will perform with her band. Tickets are $150 each, or $1,200 for a table of eight, including entertainment, tasting feast and two cocktails. Proceeds benefit Maui Coastal Land Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting coastal, agricultural, environmental and culturally significant lands in Maui Nui. 244-5263 or mauicoastallandtrust.org [SB]

Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I’ve been vegetarian for 21 years, yet it still surprises me when someone tries to feed me chicken—as if “it’s not real meat.” Watch your own boundaries, too. Someone may try to cross them or attempt to find a loophole. Whether they’re sneaky or clueless, they still need to be stopped. Be calm and respectful at first—no need to overreact, especially if it’s just a case of simple ignorance. Clearly and firmly restate where the line is, and how and why they’ve crossed it. Then drop it. If they cross it again, though, the gloves come off.

AGE LANGU

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Positive thinking can be a tremendous boon to manifesting new and better things in your life; however, it’s not a cure-all. While it’s true that negative thinking usually make things worse, just being relentless optimistic won’t really solve your problems. It’s better to be realistic, open-minded and persistent in assessing those issues and figuring out a way through them. It helps along the way if you remain confident that you will eventually find a solution. Aim for, “I can work through this.” It’s far better than “everything will work itself out.” That’s simply naïve.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) There are about twenty-three different solutions to the problem you’re trying to solve, instead of the two or three extremes you’re attempting to decide between. Try approaching this from many more angles than you have so far, and injecting more humor and creativity into the situation overall. The trio of unimaginative ideas you’ve come up with so far are only likely to make the situation worse (something you already suspected, which is why you haven’t implemented any of them yet). If you honestly can’t come up with more and better paths through the situation, ask for some help—your quirkiest, most idiosyncratic friend will probably be your best resource.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Mahalo to our over 1,700 Facebook friends and counting...

There are certain people in your life you go to to be comforted. However, as emotionally fulfilling as these visits probably are, they don’t generally do much to solve your problems—just make you feel better about them. What you need now is someone who’ll blankly state the unadorned truth about the situation without censoring herself for fear of making you feel worse. That doesn’t mean a compassionless robot, but someone who can see that the kindest thing to do is give you a clear picture, so you can make good decisions about how to act, even if said picture is unflattering, harsh, or unpleasant. Do you have such a person in your life? If not, find one.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Generally fair distribution of labor is the rule when it comes to the day-to-day of modern relationships. “I cook, you clean,” is reasonable. However, keeping a running tally of who does what and trying to ensure it’s always perfectly balanced is a sure road to disaster. Gross inequities that breed resentment should be addressed, but anything less than that you should do your best to ignore. “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” they say, and they’re right. Keep that in mind this week, and remember that even if you think you’re doing more than your fair share, you’re probably not—and in any case, you’re not getting such a bum deal; there’s really no point in making a stink.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Sometimes you have no choice but to just cut things off—however, this isn’t one of those times. While a brief blackout period to clear the air might be in order, there’s really no need to just go permanently AWOL. There’s much that’s salvageable here, and if you can approach the situation with a bit of humor, compassion, and optimism, it won’t even take much work to extract it—just a bit of clear communication and a few kind words to smooth the way. Never say never. “Not now,” is okay, and even “next month” is acceptable. But never? No way.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I’m a big fan of rewarding yourself when you do something good, but let’s not go overboard; you might be treating yourself a bit more often or lavishly than is strictly justified. You’re not a dog who needs a treat every time she sits or poops in the right place. Save the rewards for the bigger stuff that takes a bit of effort to do the right or best thing—and expect the best of yourself the rest of the time, without needing a reward. I expect you to be a delighted hedonist and enjoy the finer things in life, but this week take it down a notch or three.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Before you get all bent out of shape about something someone asked you to do, consider it from their perspective. While it’s admittedly an inconvenience for you, skipping it would be a huge hassle for them. Cut them a break and just do it. Put yourself in their shoes, and just suck it up and get it done, and hope that karma returns the favor somewhere down the line when you’re in a position similar to theirs. Once it’s done, you’ll realize it wasn’t such a big deal, and certainly far preferable to the guilt you’d feel if you’d shirked this task and made them suffer through it on their own.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) While you’re generally one of the most honest people you know, you have been known to stretch the truth now and then, either by leaving something out or exaggerating something else that you’d prefer people to focus on. These little enhancements aren’t a sign you’re going to Hell, but they are an insidious habit that can hurt you when you encounter someone who’s really going to get to the bottom of a story and discover them. Sometimes it’s okay—and politically advisable—to sort of spin the story. This time, though, it’s really best if you just spill the beans, all of them, the first time it comes up.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) One way to lose weight is to simply stop eating. (Most people who do the Master Cleanse fast lose quite a bit of weight during it.) However, that does nothing to positively change your metabolism, exercise, or eating habits (most people on a fast gain all or more of the weight back once they stop fasting). If you need a quick and dirty fix (“I need to look good in that bathing suit next weekend!”) then by all means go for it, but overall I hope you’re looking for a better long-term solution, one that’s sustainable, even if it doesn’t give you quick results. This doesn’t just apply to losing weight, by the way. It goes for whatever your goal is this week.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Sometimes having a lot of people brainstorming can lead to some great ideas; however all too often it can result in watered-down concepts that get further diluted as they’re developed. The cliché is, “too many cooks spoil the broth,” and it’s certainly applicable here. By all means, entertain ideas and suggestions, but at some point—fairly early on—you need to cut them off and work with the best ideas and refine them. That won’t sit well with some people—but you need to ignore them and keep things moving. They won’t bitch so much when you get the results you’re aiming for.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Every blessing can be a curse. Imagine if your blood had the power to instantly cure any disease. At first it would be a great boon, being able to remedy your friends and loved ones of all that ailed them— but as soon as the world got wind of your “gift,” you’d be miserable, as people far and wide clamored for a drop or two of the stuff. Revel in all the good things in your life, of course, but be aware that they can turn sour and be careful not to take them too far.
