The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL On April 8, the state Supreme Court ruled that Kuilima Resort Company has to update a 25-year-old Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for its controversial Turtle Bay expansion on Oahu’s North Shore. Why does that fall under “hyper local”? Because the same standard could be applied to Maui projects like Makena Resort, which has an EIS that Sierra Club spokesperson Karen Chun called “hopelessly outdated” in a release following the Supreme Court decision. Added Earthjustice attorney Isaac Moriwake: “If the EIS law means anything, it’s that we can’t make decisions today based on an EIS done an entire generation ago.”… Walgreens cut the ribbon on its new Kahului store this week (located in the long-derelict former Pizza Hut lot that was the subject of a hilarious Eh Brah! a while back) but not everyone is cheering. The Hawaii Carpenters Union (HCU)— peeved that the Illinois-based chain didn’t hire local union workers—organized a protest. Quoted in The Maui News, an HCU rep said Walgreens’ hiring practices will ultimately “[drive] everybody’s wages down.” OK, but this is just an isolated incident, right? Doesn’t prove anything about Walgreens as a company. Well, there is this, from the March 5 Hoboken Patch in New Jersey: “Members of Laborers’ Local 325 Union say that a Maryland based general contractor, which was hired by Walgreens, is making tough economic times tougher for laborers in and around Hoboken…. The inside of the building at 101 Washington Street will eventually be transformed into a Walgreens pharmacy, but workers performing the demolition there have been shipped in from out of

state.” And this, from the February 16, 2009 The Union in California’s Nevada County: “The suspended Walgreens project will come up for review Tuesday at the Grass Valley Planning Commission—and is already facing local discord and scrutiny. Only one area contractor has been hired for the Glenbrook Basin job now sitting in a lake of Sierra mud, drawing criticism from the Nevada County Contractors Association.” And this, from the January 16, 2009 Charleston Gazette in West Virginia: “Walgreens may be moving into the neighborhood, but they’re not making friends among union labor groups or contractors. Union laborers say store developers have frozen them out of construction jobs across the state, and officials at Walgreen Co. don’t bother to answer their letters.” And this, from the April 22, 2008 Bay City Times in Michigan: “More than 20 building trade affiliates from different tri-county trade unions picketed this morning in front of a Walgreens store rising at the corner of Center Avenue and Scheurmann Road. Holding bright orange signs that read “Local Jobs for Local Workers”…they peacefully protested the use of out-of-town labor to build the store in Hampton Township.” So what does Walgreens think about all these protests? Let’s ask spokesperson Michael Polzin, quoted in the same Maui News piece: “They certainly have that right.” Clearly… Two local boys squared off in a pro baseball game on the Mainland last week—and both had a big hand in the outcome. On April 6, the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in extra innings. In the fourth, Oakland catcher and Baldwin High grad Kurt Suzuki hit a solo homer. Then, in the ninth, Seattle summoned Kula-born Kanekoa

Texiera from the bullpen to make his Major League debut. He got the last two outs of that inning and the first two of the tenth, but ultimately gave up a gamewinning hit. Not the outcome Texiera was hoping for, but a cool moment for Maui nonetheless…. Tooting-our-own-horn alert: AAF Hawaii announced the winners of its annual Pele design awards on April 10, and MauiTime received an Award of Merit for the Halloween-inspired “Zombie Tavares” cover, easily our most controversial issue of the year (and one that, you’ll recall, sparked a First Amendment flap when County employees were caught removing copies of the paper from a public building). Congrats to Art Director Chris Skiles and illustrator Len Peralta….

LOCAL If strongly worded letters could be magically converted to school funds, Furlough Fridays would be ancient history. On April 5, Save Our Schools Hawaii posted a message to the Governor on its Web site, accusing Lingle of “blatant, reckless behavior” and “schoolyard bully tactics.” Six days later, Lingle fired back, calling Save Our Schools “misinformed” and encouraging them “to direct your energy and effort [at the teachers union].” To which Save Our Schools replied: “We are disappointed that your letter failed to address our central point: we need an end to furloughs now. We understand that there are difficulties amongst the parties and that is why we have personally met with each of them. It is important to note that HSTA, as a union, does not represent the public, but you, as our governor, represent us.”... As the legislative session winds down, bills are falling by the wayside. One recent victim: HB2667, which would have required the Department of Transportation

“to conduct a study on the feasibility of establishing a statewide ferry system.” I could repeat the same arguments that have been made in this space for years, but instead let’s turn to measure testimony given to the Ways and Means Committee. From Malama Kaua‘i: “[I]t is ironic that a study to look at the financial viability of a ferry service that utterly failed to be financially viable despite an enormous financial investment from both the public and private sectors is even a consideration.” From the Kahului Harbor Coalition: “Contrary to statements in the introduction of the Bill, the Hawaii Superferry definitely proved to NOT be ‘a very successful mode of transportation of both persons and property….’ In the end the Hawaii Superferry could not generate enough ridership and could not operate on enough days to do much more than cover its outrageous fuel consumption cost…. Why does the State now believe that it can accomplish what these super-savvy businessmen could not?” Or, if that wasn’t explicit enough, how about this, from Big Island resident Marjorie Erway: “It’s time to let a Ferry system die a natural death instead of trying to revive a dead whale.”…

NOT LOCAL Does anyone else find it ironic that to honor Ronald Reagan—the guy who said government is the problem and not the solution—we’ve gotten a publicly funded airport, a publicly funded aircraft carrier, a publicly funded postage stamp and now, if a group of Republican lawmakers have their way, a publicly funded piece of currency (the fifty, giving Ulysses S. Grant the boot)? Just asking. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut40

LCWATCH: Vacancy A

few weeks ago, I told you about the controversy surrounding Adjudication Board nominee Ron McOmber. For those new to the story, McOmber—a former Liquor Commission and Adjudication member—raised eyebrows because of past allegations of sexual harassment and because he’s currently among a group of Lanai residents challenging the residency status of Councilmember Sol Kaho‘ohalahala. After a lengthy discussion, the County Council voted unanimously to reject McOmber.

So what happens now? According to the Maui County Charter, “If the council disapproves the nominee, it shall immediately so notify the mayor of its action. The mayor shall then submit the name of a second nominee to the council within ten (10) days and the council shall act thereon within sixty (60) days. The process shall continue until the vacancy is filled.” McOmber was disapproved on March 19, meaning another name should have been submitted by March 29. I spoke with Marian Feenstra in the Mayor’s office to find

out if that happened. She confirmed it did, and said the new nominee is Linda Fernandez, also of Lanai. Feenstra said Fernandez was the “only other person on the list,” and that while they tried to solicit more applications, the 10-day window made it difficult. The Council has until the end of May to consider Fernandez, which means the Adjudication Board could be playing with a short bench for a while. That’s not a huge deal— the board has eight other members and only five are needed to make quorum. But members are frequently absent; only

five were present at the start of the most recent Adjudication meeting, with a sixth member, Jason Medeiros, arriving late. And, as noted previously in this space, the first meeting of the year was delayed more than a half-hour because only four members showed up on time. Of course, with a budget to approve and campaigns to run, it’s a safe bet filling an empty chair at the LC isn’t high on the Council’s to-do list. ■ - Jacob Shafer To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/lc40

KID TAPPER Ralph Conone, 68, was arrested in Columbus, Ohio, in March after witnesses identified him as the man who several times had walked up behind young children, punched them on the head when their parents weren’t looking and walked away as if nothing had happened. According to police, Conone confessed that he had been punching children in public since January because he liked the “excitement” of getting away with something.

SINGULAR CRIMES In February, a one-armed man swiped a single cufflink from the CJ Vinten shop in Leigh-on-Sea, England, and in March, a one-legged man swiped a single Nike trainer shoe from a store in Barnsley, England. The one-armed man is still loose, but the one-legged man was arrested.

ITALIANS DON’T EAT PUSSY A popular TV chef in Italy was fired in February after musing on the air about the historical popularity of gourmet cat meat. According to Beppe Bigazzi, 77, cat stew is best cooked after leaving the meat under running water for three days to tenderize it. “I’ve eaten it,” he said, “many times.” Bigazzi later explained that he was referring only to a tradition in Tuscany in the 1930s and 1940s and never intended to encourage eating cats today.

EXTRA DIGITS (1) China’s Yangcheng Evening News reported in March that a 6-year-old boy in Ha’erbin City, with 15 fingers and 16 toes, had surgery to get down to 10 and 10. (2) In March, Zhang Ruifang, 101, of Linlou Village in China’s Henan province, was reported to have a “rough patch” of skin on her forehead that had recently grown to a length of 2 1/2 inches in the shape of a horn. (However, dermatologists in the U.S. point out that the condition is not all that rare.) (3) In February, the parents of Deepak Kumar, 7, of Belhari in India’s Bihar state, sought financial help for surgery to remove the parasitic twin joined at the hip with the now-eight-limbed boy. (His father told an Agence France-Presse reporter that he rejected suggestions that Deepak remain as is so that villagers could worship him as a deity.)

CUSTOMER DISSERVICE Supervisors at the Department for Work and Pensions in Carlisle, England, issued a directive in March to short-handed staff on how to ease their telephone workload during the busy midday period. Workers were told to pick up the ringing phone, recite a message as if an answering machine (“Due to the high volume of inquiries we are currently experiencing, we are unable to take your call. Please call back later”) and immediately hang up.

The city health office in London, Ontario, created an online sexeducation game that officials hope will appeal to teenagers in that its messages are delivered by a cast of iconic superheroes. According to a February report by Canwest News Service, the players are Captain Condom (who wears a “cap”), Wonder Vag (a virgin girl), Power Pap (“sexually active”) and Willy the Kid, with each fighting the villain Sperminator, who wears a red wrestling mask and has phalluses for arms. The characters answer sex knowledge questions and, with correct answers, obtain “protection,” but a wrong one gets the player squirted with sperm.

ehbrah@mauitime.com To the Native American brudda and his wife who so proudly talked pono, led sweat lodges and peyote ceremonies and made beautiful beaded spirit tools but then turned around and grew pakalolo in the house I rented to them (with no cards, putting my property at risk) and then sold my stuff at a yard sale the day before they slithered off the island, leaving a trashed house, back rent, utility bills and ripping off the private school that taught your kids: Eff you, you lying, thieving bastards! You talked pono but with forked tongues—like the snakes you are. One day your spirit guides are gonna bite you big time. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/ehbrah40

IS THAT BEEF TONGUE IN YOUR PANTS OR ARE YOU JUST HAPPY TO SEE ME? A man seen on surveillance video at a Mobil on the Run convenience store in Bloomfield, Connecticut, in February fled after stuffing at least 17 cans of Red Bull energy drink down his pants. And in Cairns, Australia, a 51-year-old man was caught shoplifting in March, witnessed by security staff putting three limes and a package of beef tongue in his pants. When cornered, the man (like clowns exiting a clown car) pulled out an additional two onions, three trays of rump steaks and a packet of lamb forequarter chops.

YOU’RE NEXT, BRIDGE PLAYERS On January 29, more than 200 Alabama state troopers were amassed at 4am for the purpose of raiding several illegal bingo parlors. The raids were eventually called off, but a University of Alabama professor estimated that the staging cost the budgetshriveled $130,000. Said a spokesman for Gov. Bob Riley, “No matter what it costs, the law must be enforced.”

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) William Edmunds, 32, was charged with DUI in March when his car weaved up to the guard gate at the loading dock for the Montgomery County, New York, jail and he asked if this was the Canadian border crossing at Niagara Falls (more than 250 miles away). (2) Travis Neeley, 19, was arrested in Lake City, Florida, in March for burglarizing a car, caught red-handed by the owner who used the remote control to lock Neeley inside. Neeley tried several times to unlock a door and exit, but each time, the owner relocked it before Neeley could get out, and he finally gave up and waited for police. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/notw40

MEDAL OF HONOR STILL HAS A LOT TO TEACH US ABOUT WAR, PREJUDICE AND THE

“Four Forty-Second Infantry/We’re the boys from Hawaii nei/We’ll fight for you and the red, white and blue/ We’ll go to the front, and back to Honolulu-lulu/Fighting for dear old Uncle Sam/Go For Broke! Hooh! We don’t give a damn!/We’ll run off the Huns at the point of our guns/And victory will be ours...” - From the fight song of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army

10 April 15, 2010

O

n June 21, 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded the military’s highest commendation— the Medal of Honor—to 22 members of the 442nd Infantry Regiment. Reserved for soldiers who display “gallantry and intrepidity” and, famously, risk their lives while performing “above and beyond the call of duty,” the medal has been given to less than 3,500 servicemen in its 150-year history. Of the 22 men, only seven were alive to accept the award. One of them was Hawaii Senator Dan Inouye. Like his fellow honorees, Inouye— seventy-five years old at the time and serving his seventh term in the Senate—hadn’t seen combat action in a half-century. His heroics in the European Theater of World War II had been relegated to history, forgotten by those too young to grasp their significance. “I am deeply grateful to my nation for this extraordinary award,” Inouye said in a prepared statement. “If I did well, much of the credit should go to my parents, grandparents and the gallant men of my platoon. This is their medal. I will receive it on their behalf.” Behind that humility, however, is an astounding story of courage and bloodshed that illustrates the complex nature of war and heroism. Sixty-five years later, it’s a story worth retelling.

cocked and ready to throw another grenade, a German soldier fired from ten yards away, striking Inouye on the elbow and nearly severing his right arm. Inouye remembers searching the ground for the grenade before realizing it was still clutched in his hand. Using his good arm, he pried the explosive from his lifeless fingers and hurled it at the German. Then, he recalls, “everything went blank.” After that, Inouye knows only what others have told him. Taking up his Thompson sub-machine gun, Inouye, in the words of his company commander, “went berserk,” spraying bullets at the second nest as blood spurted from his arm. He was shot again, this time in the leg, and the third wound sent him careening to the bottom of the hill. As he regained consciousness, his platoon-mates rushed to his aid. But Inouye, according to an account posted on his official Web site, waved them off, shouting, “Nobody called off the war!” It’s a story almost too incredible to believe—replace Inouye with John Wayne,

O

n April 21, 1945, the war was almost over, and 20-year-old Second Lieutenant Daniel K. Inouye knew it. The Germans were preparing to surrender, his company commander told him, but until then the fighting wouldn’t stop. If anything, it would intensify. “That’s a horrible thing—knowing that the war is going to end and you have to keep urging your men to go forward,” Inouye said 30 years later while being interviewed for the PBS documentary The War. But he waved them off, reportedly shouting, “Nobody called off the war!” Musatello ridge in the Apennine Mountains, a part of Italy known as the Gothic Line that served as one of Germany’s last strongholds. As his platoon advanced, Inouye remembers feeling a pain like someone was “punching [him] on the side.” It wasn’t until a fellow soldier told him he was bleeding that he noticed a bullet hole in his abdomen, less than an inch from his spine. He pressed on, ignoring the injury, even as bullets rained down from two German machine-gun nests. Ordering his men to take cover, Inouye advanced with a bag of grenades. He tossed two into the first nest and, in his words, “silenced” it. As he moved toward the second nest, arm

and by his indomitable leadership, Second Lieutenant Inouye enabled his platoon to advance through formidable resistance, and was instrumental in the capture of the ridge. Second Lieutenant Inouye’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.” Yet to hear Inouye tell it, the incident was little more than a big, chaotic accident. “The enemy shoots at you, you try to avoid it,” he said in a video interview posted last year at vimeo.com. “And if you happen to be in the wrong place, you get hit.” Then, addressing

the Medal of Honor specifically: “I’ve suggested maybe it was temporary insanity. I look at the citation and I [say], ‘No, no—I couldn’t have done that. That’s a crazy man, facing bullets coming in. That couldn’t have been me.’”

W

ar heroism is a tricky thing. As the cases of Corporal Pat Tillman in Afghanistan and Private Jessica Lynch in Iraq have lately demonstrated, battlefield incidents are frequently subject to factual manipulation, presented as pure, uncomplicated acts of bravery and patriotism. To be sure, courage and love of country are often involved—but there is almost always more to the story. In Inouye’s case, it took 55 years for the United States government to acknowledge the full significance of his sacrifice, and that of the other 21 men. Why? One possible answer: all 22 were Asian-American. Prejudice against Asian citizens, particularly those of Japanese descent, ran deep during WWII. Scan the headlines of the 1940s Honolulu Advertiser (or any other paper) and see how often the word “Jap” leaps off the page, accompanied by grossly stereotypical caricatures of the “slant-eyed menace.” And, of course, there were the internment camps. Even as Japanese-American soldiers risked their lives overseas, back home many of their families were being rounded up and sequestered, treated like potential traitors. In a tacit acknowledgement of this bigotry, in 1996 Congress ordered the Army to “review the records relating to each award of the Distinguished-Service Cross… that was awarded to an AsianAmerican or a Native American Pacific Islander with respect to service as a member of the Armed Forces during World War II… to determine whether any such award should be upgraded to the Medal of Honor.” Four years later, seven soldiers— and the families of 15 others—gathered on the South Lawn of the White House for a long-overdue moment of recognition. None of the men expressed bitterness or said whether they believed race was a factor in the five-decade delay. But honoree George Sakato—whose citation is as filled with valor and gore as Inouye’s—did tell CNN the 442nd was “used like cannon fodder.” The predominantly JapaneseAmerican unit withstood heavy casualties overseas and faced discrimination upon their return, as anti-Japanese sentiment festered long after the war ended. Today, things have changed. The 442nd is remembered for its grit and mettle and is the most decorated unit in American history. But to truly understand what Inouye and countless others fought for and endured, it’s important to paint the whole picture—even the messy, tragic bits. “In the face of painful prejudice, they helped to define America at its best,” said president Clinton at the 2000 ceremony. “It is long past time to break the silence about their courage…and to honor it by name.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/feature40

Diva Divine Eat, drink, indulge—and raise money for a worthy cause The Diva Club April 17 David Paul’s Island Grill 900 Front St., Lahaina, 662-3000

L

ast month, I gathered a group of close friends to attend David Paul’s Island Grill’s Diva Club. I had no idea I was heading to one of the best themed parties I’ve attended on Maui. We took the Hollywood glam theme to the next level, with mandatory wigs and pearls (for the girls), and as we arrived and paparazzi followed us down the red carpet while handsome men in suits escorted us in, we knew we were in the right place at the right time. The Diva Club was created by Chef David Paul as a place for women in business to mingle, self-promote and get pampered while raising funds for charity. A yearlong membership costs $15 and earns you entrance to a members-only party every third Saturday of the month. But the real clincher is that the money goes directly to Women Helping Women. Once inside, there are lots of other perks— participating vendors offering goods and services (up-dos and makeup by Hina Mana Salon were featured at the March party). There’s live entertainment that changes with the theme. For Hollywood glam it was Pio Marasco spinning backup to the sweet vocals of Gretchen Rhodes, who just released a new EP called Paia. (For those who want to keep it going after 8pm when the party is over, Quinn Ross, director of operations at Timba, offers all Diva Club members no cover and no wait at the 505 Front Street club.) Chef David Paul always goes all out on the

Food.

food, switching it up to suit the theme. For Hollywood glam it was a sushi bar. David Paul himself was behind the bar, creating hand-rolled sensations on demand, with spicy tuna, fresh unagi and truffled salmon. There were exotic shoyu mixes, from spicy to sweet, to season the sushi—all top notch. Our be-wigged foodie divas were in heaven. Cupcake Love was also on hand, offering an assortment of cupcakes that looked so pretty we (almost) didn’t want to eat them. Chocolate-dipped strawberries, baked Brie, bruschetta, mini cheese breads and summer rolls were just a few of the delicacies that rounded out the hors d’oeuvres that evening. The drink menu featured Kai Vodkasponsored cocktails, wine and a fabulous champagne Bellini bar with fresh fruit purees. Libations are $5. “Giving back to the community is always at the forefront of our mission statement, said Chef David Paul of his benefit party. “Women helping Women is a charity close to my heart. As a child, I witnessed abuse and vowed to do something about it when I could. His vision is coming to fruition; Diva Club membership has grown to over 300 since its inception in December 2009. The goal is to have 800 by their one-year anniversary, said David Paul, and to raise more than $12,000 for Women Helping Women. The April Diva Club, set for this Saturday, will feature a spring fashion show with Pakaloha bikinis and Maggie Coulombe’s and Tamara Catz’s spring lines. The menu will bloom with lavender cookies and lemon bars, strawberries Romanoff, Brie with walnuts and port reduction, antipasti platters, Thai summer

rolls and much more. Add fresh produce from Oluwalu Farms, Wines by Clos du Val and vodka cocktails by Kai and how can you not indulge? Diva Club will also be launching its own line of Diva wear, another way to raise funds for Women Helping Women. Trunk shows will be all the rage at this fashion party, and, of course, special discounts will be offered for the Divas. This is one exclusive club that’s easy to get into—and well worth it. â–

Deep Roots From Jamaica to New Zealand to Maui—reggae unites Junior Reid with Katchafire, Innavision & Fiji Maui gig: Friday, April 16, 7pm on the lawn at the MACC, $35-$40, 242-7469 or mauiarts.org “

aterhouse weeps,” reads a headline in a Sunday issue of The Gleaner, a Jamaican paper of record. “[T]he community has long been infamous for acts of violence,” it says of the troubled district on the edge of St. Andrew, the parish bordering Kingston on all but its ocean side. On this tiny West Indies isle, there were “1,361 murders in the first 10 months of [2009]” alone, and The Gleaner reports, Waterhouse is especially stricken by shootings and fire bombings, with residents burdened by “the weight of the violence.” Yet from the hardship this neighborhood endures, triumph is born. Waterhouse has “produced the current world’s fastest woman, Shelly-Ann Fraser, many other outstanding athletes, and a number of Jamaica’s leading musicians.” Musicians like legendary reggae artist Junior Reid. Around the time of his birth, the short-lived West Indies Federation had collapsed and Jamaica was the first of the Greater Antilles isles to gain independence. Reid’s youth was spent in the thick of the political upheaval and economic downturn that followed. The tumult today may have a different veneer, but as I was speaking with Reid from Kingston last week, the background noise

gave validity to reports of worsening gang violence. Repeatedly, the sound of sirens and engines overtook our conversation, draping it with a disquieting air. But Reid—who recorded his first single at the age of 13 for Rockers International— speaks of a healing that can be found in music, especially in reggae. I ask him to identify what it is about reggae that leads to so much international appeal, particularly in other island communities like Hawaii. “It’s the tribulation of the islands, the tribulation of the islander,” says Reid in his rich Jamaican lilt. “Tribulation is more bad times than good. But when you listen to reggae, it is only good times.” Indeed, the music is uplifting, rife with guitar upstrokes, open bass lines as deep and vast as the sea and piercing rim shots that seem to key into the militaristic side of our psyches with rebellious bend. Add Reid’s iconic voice and you have the makings of an anthem. Famously a frontman of Black Uhuru during the mid-’80s, Reid earned a Grammy nomination for the 1986 album Brutal. But it was songs like 1989’s “One Blood,” and 1990’s “I’m Free”—from his solo reembarkation—that solidified his position among the reggae elite. Fans find joy in his vocal qualities as much as his messages; Reid’s tone has a way of evoking the aboriginal meaning of the name Jamaica, “land of wood and water.” If sound were color, the spectrum of his voice would be contrastingly infused with dark amber and azul. Today, Reid runs his own recording studio (JR Productions), dons sophisticated threads,

Katchafire play even better than they pose.

still records albums—this show promotes his latest, Living Legend—and saunters out of helicopters in music videos. His name is often seen alongside the likes of Alicia Keys and Lil Wayne. The wisps of gray in his impressive dreads reveal the fact that his career is older than the lives of many of his collaborators, solidifying his living-legend status. Hawaii fans will be glad to hear Reid loves playing in the 808. “Hawaii is my place,” he says. There are songs Hawaiians have embraced, Reid says, that even Jamaicans don’t know. “They sing every word—front to back, top to bottom. So I will sing those songs for them, my sons of Hawaii.” Joining Junior Reid for his MACC show will be New Zealand’s famed Katchafire, another Hawaii favorite who recently completed their fourth full-length album. Of their experience recording at home in NZ, band manager Logan Bell tells MauiTime, “Previously, we’d recorded in the city… This time, we used a studio out in the country.” The locale switch added an intangible, “extra,” element to the process, Bell says. “There

was such a great vibe, a homey warmth and attraction [in a] very quiet, peaceful way. It wasn’t just a studio, it was a sanctuary.” When asked to sum up the mood of the new album in five words or less, Bell says, “Fresh, warm, unity, love and experienced.” Such a vibe bodes well for local fans anticipating both the album and Friday night’s show. “We’ve recently put ‘Rude Girl’ back in the live set,” says Bell. “It seems to be a favorite among the girls, which in turn gets the boys going!”’ As with Reid, Katchafire recognizes the love Hawaiians hold for reggae. “Ten thousand people all singing the words to a song, in sync, is a very powerful thing.” Bell says Maui is the band’s favorite overseas venue, and closes with this Maori sentiment, “Ka hoki au ki haiki nui ki hawaiki roa ki hawaiki pamaumau. The fire cannot wait to return to our homeland from where we migrated from. Hawaiki…” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music40

Revolting Youth Promising teen-superhero satire marred by morally dubious carnage Kick-Ass

★★★★★

Rated R/117 min.

W

hen I was in junior high, I conned my mother into taking me to see Robocop 2. She wasn’t particularly happy with the character of Hob, a foul-mouthed teen criminal who murdered adults with glee throughout the film. Though she didn’t attend the screening with me, I’m pretty sure Mom wouldn’t like Kick-Ass, either. All of the main characters are variations of Hob: pint-sized, pottymouthed killers who we’re supposed to laugh at because, after all, it’s based on a comic book, so it’s all in good fun, right? After a while, I stopped laughing and found this well crafted but morally bankrupt film to be just plain offensive. Aaron Johnson stars as a wimpy teen fed up with urban crime who orders a superhero suit online and becomes the masked, out-of-his-league crime fighter

OK, I’ll buy you an iPad.

“Kick-Ass.” He later meets genuine masked vigilantes Big Daddy (a hilarious Nicolas Cage) and his sidekick and pre-teen daughter Hit Girl. This is where the movie started to make me uneasy. The introduction of these two characters is a shocking and darkly comic sequence where Cage is teaching his daughter the finer points of vigilantism—by firing a gun at her. We’re meant to laugh, because the child is wearing

a bulletproof vest and she cheerfully gets up for another round in the chest. But the bit is squirm-inducing—in a bad way—and sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Director Matthew Vaughn has made a film that’s aimed straight at young, Caucasian underachievers who own stacks of comics, love onscreen carnage and adore anything with “geek cred.” Despite the hard-R rating (for everything you could possibly imagine),

many underage kids will flock to this; their parents should at the very least be warned. At the beginning of the third act, the formally tongue-in-check story loses its sense of humor, erupts into an orgy of violence and, for me, the fun stopped. What began as a smart parody of comic book origin tales becomes the sort of mindlessly violent, by-the-numbers comic book fantasy the filmmakers were supposedly making fun of. Brad Pitt is one of the producers, and I’m surprised that he and the filmmakers didn’t find anything morally abhorrent about the screenplay. The satire isn’t strong or sustained enough to support the dubious content. After a promising start, we get an entourage of—if you really think about it— slick, well-shot sequences of child abuse. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film40

But now it’s funny, because it’s happening to someone else. 91 min. HOT TUB TIME MACHINE - R - Comedy - Four dudes get drunk in a hot tub and break the space-time continuum. Friday (April 16), doors 8pm/show 9pm, $10 advance/$15 door, Mulligans on the Blue, Wailea

How can you not love an event with a call to action that includes “dead-on dolphin impressions? OK, this new talent show, “Sideshow (the first night of what will be monthly engagements, every third Thursday at Casanova, 9-11:30pm, $10 cover, free for performers), isn’t looking specifically for porpoise impersonations, but is searching for those to ready to unveil their hidden talents. (Event co-creator Jill Pridemore emphasizes that “originality is as much a factor as performance.) Akaku Community Television will later broadcast the competitors vying for prizes and bragging rights. But unlike Idol, you’ll have to be there to vote via text message. For more information or to register in advance, e-mail sideshowtalentshow@gmail.com. On the West side, check out Russian Surrealist Victor Bredega. Every Friday night in April (7-10pm), Bredega will be on hand to discuss his unique work at Sargent’s Fine Art on Front Street—the only gallery in the nation with the privilege of showcasing Bredega’s trippy, oil-on-canvas creations. Disco had already died when the Hyatt Regency Maui was born in 1980, but their famed nightclub Spats was as the closest thing Maui had to a discotheque. Though now defunked (sorry), fans of the club get their due flashback, as Spats—for one night only on Saturday—will re-open in celebration of the Hyatt’s 30th anniversary. Spinning at this ’80s/disco-themed event is none other than DJ Blast, a regular back in the day. Emulate the Hyatt’s lobby-living penguins by wearing black and white (theme colors of the night), and do the hustle with Spats Passion Dancers, Cirque Polynesia performers, ABSOLUT models and Bud Ambassadors. A portion of the door ($25 or $20 in advance) will benefit the Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Casanova: 572-0220/Hyatt: 667-4420/Sargent’s: 667-4030

“To say that Vince Esquire is an awesome guitar player is a pitiful understatement. To say, ‘man, that guy is a f*cking machine!’ misses the point, writes preceding Pick princess, Kate Bradshaw, in a 2008 MauiTime Music Scene feature. “His solos are wildly creative, going well beyond the pentatonic with the occasional flatted fifth thrown in. (Uh... I took the liberty of looking up that last bit, and it means a dissonant tone created by playing notes six steps apart; which in the Middle Ages was deemed “the devil in music. Cool...) “Yet while they are intricate and betray years spent scaling the scales, Bradshaw continues, “unlike many young guitar players he allows his solos a little breathing room. With so much honed talent, the draw to see Esquire and equally talented pals Josh Greenbaum (drums) and Shawn Michael (bass) for The Vince Esquire Band’s upcoming CD release party will likely leave little breathing room. The Back Where You Belong release will close with Kanekoa, Esquire’s other outfit—a sorely underrated, electric ukulele jam band who, word has it, have a new release of their own, due out sometime this summer. The morning after, recover from Mulligans’ expertly poured Guinness by heading from Wailea to Wailuku for Requests’ celebration of National Record Store Day (10am-6pm). The crew of Maui’s last legit record hub have secured exclusive items from national promoters, and will divvy up the booty by way of giveaways, drawings and specials. Naturally, only the hippest lineup of local performers will be on hand to keep it lively: Kanoa of Gomega, DJ Blast, One Inity, Jay.P, DJ Boomshot, I-nology, Joralien and more. Pick Paia, Not Your Nose

Frédéric and Julio

Saturday (April 17), all day, all over town

Sunday (April 18) & Friday (April 23), MACC

Screw the vernal equinox. You really know spring is upon you when events slated are so thick, Picks must take on an entire town. In this case, Paia—a mecca for yoga, health food, bare feet, acoustic guitars and Brazilian bikinis. Since so many environmentally conscious people hang around Paia town all day anyway, it’s easy logic for folks to come together and wield their collective activist might. The Hawaiian Heritage Environmental Sustainability Fair (12pmsunset) provides venue for just that, on the grounds of the Paia Gardens. Highlights include a giant solar dehydrator and electric motorcycle with a solar charger on display, as well as event coordinator Anthony Simmons’s band, The Eazy, performing in the afternoon. You can also learn about red worm composting (if that’s your kind of thing). Among the organizations giving presentations and hosting informational and interactive booths are Upcountry Sustainability, Onipa‘a Sustainability and Compassion Center, Pacific Power Sails, Ko‘ie Fishpond and SLIM. Also taking over the town this Saturday is The Butterfly Effect. This non-competitive “worldwide water woman movement,” celebrates its fourth year of festivities on Maui and aims to foster camaraderie among wai-loving wahine with a down-winder journey (windsurf, kite board or paddle) from Ho‘okipa to Kanaha (11am launch, 2pm land). Check-in takes place at the Green Banana Cafe (8:30am), followed by cooler-than-the-Olympics closing ceremonies at Cafe Mambo (6:30pm), and capped off with the official after party at Cafe Moana (9pm, $10 cover), featuring DJ Pio and DJ Nadi. If by age 11 you were performing piano concertos for the Tsar of Russia (Alexander I), you and Frédéric François Chopin have something in common. Probably not (no offense). But connecting with this king of the keys is easy enough, in that the subtle, narrative nuances of his compositions have made him synonymous with Romantic music (hello? he invented the piano ballade). Romance—and the music inspired by it—is something we can all relate to, and Chopin’s work resonates still. So much so, we’re celebrating his birthday, 200 years later. This Sunday, pianist Thomas Purviance of the Westminster Conservatory of Music in Princeton, New Jersey, will take to the ivories and showcase some of Chopin’s work. This, to the backdrop of intriguing historical context, as provided by Purviance, in none other than the cozy venue of the McCoy Studio Theater. (3:30pm, $11/$22). Also coming up at the MACC: Julio Iglesias, performing next Friday (April 23). Iglesias will show Castle Theater patrons why, for 40 years, he’s reigned as modern master of the romantic ballad. Then amorous couples can take it from there (just wait ’til you’re out of the theater). 242-7469, mauiarts.org

Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You sense a lie. Your gut is usually right about these matters, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it right now. Becoming paranoid and suspicious will just make you miserable—and really unpopular if you go out of your way to uncover the plans for your surprise party, if that’s what’s going on. Sometimes the deception is for your own good, and even if it’s not, trust that if it doesn’t originate from someone’s generosity it’s probably coming from some cowardice or misguided intentions instead of a malicious desire to screw you over (and is thus potentially forgivable).

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS 1. California, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia 2. John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. Montagu helped finance Captain James Cook’s expedition, and Cook named the Hawaiian Islands the Sandwich Islands after him, as well as Montague Island in Alaska

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It always feels good to clean my place. However, sometimes I let things get pretty piled up or grungy before I get around to it. I know I’ll enjoy having a clean apartment, and it won’t even take that long to get it to a good state—and yet somehow laziness frequently triumphs. Doesn’t this sound familiar? Your Achilles’ Heel may not be your apartment’s tidiness, but there’s something in your life that’s akin to my housecleaning dilemma—it’s easy to do and makes you feel good and yet somehow you can all too easily skip doing it. Here’s the kick in the butt to make sure you don’t omit it this week. Go do it—now.

3. Elmer Cravalho, Mayor 1969-’79 4. A. (Lanai: 140 square-miles; Mall of America: 1.4 square-miles)

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I was chatting with a Gemini yesterday and she said, “Being a Gemini is great; we get along with everyone.” That’s true—about half the time. Unfortunately, because you’re so changeable, you also can get into conflict with just about anyone. This week, the latter is more likely than the former. Who knows why you’re so on edge or ready to tussle this week, but we both know how you can avoid getting into pointless scraps you’ll regret—stay away from them. Hermit mode may be in order right now—and if you nevertheless find yourself in a situation where your sharp tongue might get you in trouble, bite it, quickly, and walk away.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) In my neighborhood, so many people have wi-fi that our networks are constantly interfering with each other. (I’m sure there’s a technical solution to this, but I’m not savvy enough to figure it out.) Oddly enough, this reminds me of you, Cancer. When you hang with certain friends, you sometimes cancel each other out; you’re both trying to express something great, but somehow the good stuff is lost in the emotional white noise between you two. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution. Unlike our neighborhood wi-fi competing for bandwidth, you both don’t need to be broadcasting. This week, find an elegant way to take turns.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Avoid knee-jerk reactions. There are some things that just push your buttons (for me, it’s hypocritical, bigoted Republicans), and make it hard to react in a calm, rational manner. Leos are in some ways the least fiery of the Fire signs (your Sagittarian and Aries cousins are much more likely to have tempers) but when someone hits on the couple things that will instantly bring you to a boil, everyone better watch out. Since that’s exceedingly likely this week, make sure you’re consciously determined to keep a cool head—and be ready to exit the scene swiftly if you fail.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) A morally questionable act, no matter how easy it is to rationalize, is still a slippery slope you need to stay away from. If your employer sucks, for example, that’s no reason to rob him blind (even if you can get away with it). Sure, you might walk away with loads of free stuff, but you’d be leaving something else behind—your integrity. That, my dear, is worth a lot more than whatever crap you could lift from your workplace. If you’re getting the short end of the stick, don’t retaliate by compromising your own ideals. Just walk away.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) While the symbolism of planting a seed when your child is born and having the tree sprout and grow alongside your kid is very sweet, starting with a sturdy sapling instead of an acorn makes it far more likely that the baby tree will survive and thrive (and perhaps even be climbable in a reasonable amount of time). Check out the big picture and make the smartest overall decision you can. Don’t get too carried away with symbolic gestures; let practical considerations modify your plan somewhat this week—a month, year, or decade from now, you’ll be very glad you did.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Plunged into turbulent water, it may be difficult to tell which way is up. In theory you can follow air bubbles, since they’ll generally be headed straight to the surface. However, sometimes the water’s so murky that relying entirely on yourself to extricate yourself from that volatile situation might just be a bad idea. Luckily, there are at least two or three people who watched you take the plunge and are now ready to fearlessly aid in your rescue. Keep your eye out for the emotional equivalent of a lifesaver buoy, or simply some outstretched arms.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) In a venue where politics generally play little to no part, you accidentally discover that someone’s views differ wildly from your own. What to do? On the one hand, knowing they disagree with you so fundamentally is bound to henceforth cast them in a negative light for you. On the other hand, however, it’d be a shame to pollute this particular scenario with a disagreement that really has no place here. It’s really up to you. Can you put your politics aside in order to preserve the atmosphere in this situation? If not, consider whether the group would benefit most from you making a scene—or taking yourself out of the picture. Then do that.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’ve got to get up pretty early to pull one over on a Capricorn; unfortunately, someone is rising at the crack of dawn to do just that. It’s easy to foil them, though—marshal some of your legendary discipline to beat them at their own game. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily involve actually sneaking out of bed at 4am, but it does require that you do what you can to prepare for any eventuality and preempt most of them—something you are generally very good at, luckily! Set your alarm, figuratively—and when they show up ready to pull a fast one, you’ll be there already, waiting for them.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Although you’re rarely a sore loser, you do have a strong competitive side that bristles at defeat— enough so that you’ll occasionally avoid situations where you’re likely to experience it. That would be a bad idea this week. You have to be in it to win it, they say, and they’re right. Sure, the odds are stacked against you, but you know what? That’s often the case. It’s your job to buck up and go for it anyway. Believe it or not, there’s still a chance (however slim) that you’ll win—and the more you believe it, the likelier it is.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes regret kicks in the second after you take action. You click “send” on the email and immediately cringe, thinking, “Shit, I shouldn’t have done that.” Of course, you’re used to living with the consequences of actions like these by now, but wouldn’t it be nice if occasionally your gut instinct would be strong enough to stop you before you commit the faux pas? Luckily, this week, it should be intense enough to keep you from going there if you’re “listening” for it at all. Therefore, stay tuned to your own instincts, and if your gut says, “Hold on a second,” stop in your tracks.
