The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL

for certain is that his impact on his sport is already something far beyond videos, advertisements and contest results. And through it all, Clay just wants to go surfing.”....

Filled out your Census yet? According to the latest figures from the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, there's a 1 in 3 chance you haven't. Only 65 percent of Hawaii households had mailed back their forms as of April 23, tying us with Oklahoma for the fifth-lowest return rate in the nation. (Many parts of Maui County, including Molokai, Lanai and East Maui are doing considerably worse.) Census workers will start going door-to-door next week, at a cost of more than $50 per home. If you think that sounds like a waste of taxpayer money, there's something you can do: answer the ten questions, lick the envelope and be done with it.... “He doesn't really ride waves so much as fly them, soaring above the sea foam upside down and spinning

LOCAL OK, now she's just trying to piss them off. This week, Gov. Lingle proposed a bold new approach to getting students back in the classroom for the three remaining Furlough Fridays on the current school calendar: teachers and administrators can work for free. Brilliant! Why didn't they think of it before? “I have met teachers, principals and education officials who tell me they want to return to the classroom. This is encouraging,” said Lingle in an April 25 statement. “I therefore am calling upon

There's something you can do: lick the envelope and be done with it. the nose of his board in whiplash twists... it's a sight to behold. Sorry, but humans can't do that, you keep thinking. Then he goes and does it all day long.” That's Rolling Stone writer Paul Solotaroff, describing Maui's Clay Marzo in a penetrating April 15 story titled “The Surfing Savant.” Of course, we've been giving Marzo ink for years, since he was an up-and-coming grom following in the footsteps of his big brother, Cheyne. Most recently, in September 2008, contributor Beau Ewan profiled Marzo, who has Asperger's syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder characterized by social ineptitude but also intense, obsessive focus. Here's an excerpt from Beau's story, “Hope Floats”: “The intricacies of Marzo's mind ultimately remain a mystery. Perhaps the only thing we know

teachers and principals to voluntarily agree to come back for the remaining three days this school year. This would be a welcome and significant gesture to heal our community.” Hawaii State Teachers Association President Wil Okabe told the Honolulu Advertiser Lingle's suggestion, if implemented, would violate the union's pact with the state and is thus illegal. Setting that aside, if Lingle wanted the teachers to consider her proposal, she would have brought it up behind closed doors and let them pretend it was their idea. But then, the goal isn't—and never has been— to find a workable compromise, but rather to trade snide sound bites and score cheap political points. Whether you blame Lingle or the union (or the correct answer: both), one thing is clear: this relationship redefines

dysfunctional. And, as is the case with many dysfunctional relationships, the kids are caught in the middle.... The tax-exempt status of churches has always bothered me (whatever happened to giving Caesar what is Caesar's?), but at least they should have the decency to actually be churches. According to the group Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of Church and State (HCSSC), two properties on Oahu owned by the Catholic Church have been enjoying the benefits of religious institutions while raking in the profits of hotel-convention centers. “The Catholic Church is potentially costing the residents of Hawaii more than $1 million in fines and uncollected taxes,” claims an April 12 HCSSC release. “Zoning and land use violations jeopardize the safety and security of guests as well as the economic interests of all Hawaii citizens.” HCSSC says it's filed complaints with the city, state and the IRS. According to the Advertiser, both the St. Stephen Diocesan Center and the St. Anthony Retreat Center (which, a quick check of the City of Honolulu's online property tax records reveals, has an assessed value of $7.637 million) claim to be “unaware of any violations.”...

NOT LOCAL Overheard this week on Hawaii News Now, regarding Obama and the Dems' financial regulation bill, which fell a few votes shy of passage in the Senate and (shockingly) got zero GOP support: “Republicans say they may submit a bill of their own.” Oh they may, may they? In that case, I may consider them something other than petty, partisan obstructionists who would vote against a bill proclaiming that puppies are cute and shouldn't be boiled alive in weapons-grade plutonium if Obama supported it. Then again, I may not. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut42

Ray of Hope Camp Imua offers a free week-long camp for special needs youth—and they need your help

n 1947, Imua Family Services was founded to serve children afflicted with polio. Many things have changed in the intervening decades, but one thing hasn’t: the Wailuku-based organization’s commitment to helping keiki in need. “Our mission is to provide a community service to a very vulnerable population,” says Sonya Niess, program manager for Camp Imua. Camp Imua takes a group of young people age 6-20 with physical and mental disabilities for a week of activities, games and, most importantly, supportive interaction at Camp Maluhia in the West Maui Mountains—and it’s offered at no cost to families. The camp is part of Imua Family Services’ larger mission to support special needs youth. It’s the only organization of its kind on Maui, and, Neiss says, possibly the state. Lately, we’ve heard a lot about services being slashed. As is always the case, the poor and disadvantaged have been hit hardest. So it’s nice to see a ray of hope, an organization that’s finding ways to do good work despite the prevailing economic realities. Imua, which subsists on donations and a small slice of grant money, has certainly felt the pinch. Neiss says they’re “figuring out how to make due with limited funds”—a familiar

It’s a chance to see past what you can’t do, to focus on what you can. Camp Imua is about supporting each other, both as a community and a caregiver. The week is exhausting, but at the end of five days you know you made a real difference. The laughs and smiles stay with you all year long.” “You give one week,” adds Neiss, “and you can make a lifetime of memories.” ■

RAMEN HELL YA! Computer hardware engineer Toshio Yamamoto, 49, this year celebrates 15 years tasting and cataloguing all the Japanese ramen (instant noodles) he can get his hands on (including the full ingredients list, texture, flavor, price and star rating for each), for the massive 4,300-ramen database on his Web site, expanded recently with “hundreds of video reviews and with re-reviews of many previously appearing products (in case the taste had changed, he told journalist Lisa Katayama, writing in April on the popular blog Boing Boing). Yamamoto said he had always eaten ramen for breakfast seven days a week, but cut back recently to five. “I feared that, if I continued at [the seven-day] pace, I would get bored.

BUZZ ALDRIN, LITTER BUG In January the California Historical Resources Commission formally claimed, on behalf of the state, about 100 items of property on the surface of the moon having been left behind during the 1969 Apollo 11 landing (since California companies were instrumental in that mission and since only the moon surface itself is off limits to ownership claims under international law). Among the items declared are tools, a flag, bags of food and bags of human waste left by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

POOR EXCUSES (1) Louis Woodcock, 23, testified at his Toronto trial in March that he was not involved in the 2005 shooting of a woman, despite being seen on surveillance video approaching the woman and holding his hand inside his jacket until gunshots rang out. He said he often kept his hand inside his jacket to keep from sucking his thumb, which is a habit he picked up in childhood and which did not go over well on the street. (The jury, apparently not seeing him as the thumb-sucking type, convicted him of manslaughter.) (2) In February, Jesse McCabe, 29, was spared jail time (probation and community service only) for his conviction in connection with a missing $18,000 in bank deposits he was to have made for his employer in New Port Richey, Florida. Police discovered 13 deposits, from a six-week period, in McCabe’s home, but all the money was recovered, and McCabe persuaded the judge that he just hadn’t been able to make it to the bank yet. (3) In March, Monica Conyers, pleading insufficient funds, was granted a court-appointed lawyer to appeal her bribery conviction stemming from her work as a city councilwoman in Detroit. Conyers is the wife of John Conyers, the Michigan congressman who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. (Mrs. Conyers arrived in court on the day of her sentencing clutching what reporters said appeared to be a Louis Vuitton handbag that sells for $1,000.)

A February New York Times/CBS News poll found that 79 percent of self-identified Democrats approve of gays serving openly in the military if they’re referred to in the question as “gay men and lesbians. However, when the openly serving gays are referred to in the question as “homosexuals, only 43 percent approve.

UNCARING Paula Oertel, on Medicare, has a brain tumor that had miraculously been in remission for nine years thanks to a type of interferon approved for multiple sclerosis but not for cancer. Medicare had been paying about $100,000 a year for the drug, but when Oertel relocated from one county in Wisconsin to another 30 miles away, it triggered an automatic, full-scale review of her records, at which point officials realized that her drug was unauthorized and stopped paying. According to a March Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report, her doctors scrambled to find a drug on the “approved list, but discovered neither a less expensive one nor one nearly as effective, and Oertel’s tumor has returned.

GENDER BENDERS (1) Scientists at Britain’s Newcastle University announced in April that they had grown human embryos free of certain serious genetic diseases by first merging DNA from two fertilized eggs. The resulting child would have over 99 percent of the DNA of the mother and father (i.e., all except the unhealthy markers). One scientist compared the procedure to “changing the battery on a laptop. (2) In March, the government of New South Wales in Australia granted “Norrie a certificate as the state’s (perhaps the country’s, perhaps the world’s) only official genderless person. Norrie prefers to live that way, and two doctors had certified that the former male is now “physically and psychologically androgynous. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/notw42

BILLS SEEKING TO BAN FOIE GRAS AND SHARK FIN SOUP RAISE THE QUESTION: WHEN DOES A CULTURAL DELICACY BECOME ANIMAL CRUELTY? BY JACOB SHAFER

T

he shark cuts noiselessly through the water, scanning for prey. Nearby, a piece of meat hangs tantalizingly. In a flash, the predator darts forward and clamps down its powerful jaws. A searing pain shoots through its head and, as it jerks back in a vain effort to escape, it feels itself being pulled upward. The pain increases. In a blinding flash, the shark is lifted, writhing, from the water and hoisted onto a hard, foreign surface. As it gasps for air, strange, indistinct figures loom above. One of them bends down, and now the pain is in the animal's dorsal fin, coursing through its spine. Then, as quickly as it was removed, the shark is pushed back into the water. It can breathe again, but something is horribly wrong. Blood spurts from the wound on its back; pain overwhelms its senses. It feels the urge to escape but can't swim straight. In a panic, it lurches, flails and finally is still, drifting with the current, the life draining from its body.

10 April 29, 2010

T

he goose opens its mouth, anticipating food. Instead, it feels a hard, foreign object sliding forcefully down its throat. As the bird's esophagus expands, it struggles against this odd, uncomfortable sensation. Now the food comes, quickly and relentlessly; in a matter of seconds, the goose's stomach is filled to bursting. The object is removed and the goose is returned to its cage, but the process is repeated again and again until the bird has grown fat and lethargic, reduced to little more than a living feed bag. Release

comes only when the goose is finally slaughtered, its distended liver removed and the rest of the carcass discarded.

F

or most of us, eating is an unconscious act. Sure, we think about things like preparation or how many grams of saturated fat a meal contains, but when it comes to the origins of our food— specifically the where, when and how—we tend to subscribe to the old “ignorance is bliss” philosophy.

Of course, there are activists and organizations dedicated to making sure we don't ignore the implications of our dietary choices. Anti-GMO, pro-organic, locavores—name a foodrelated battle and there are people committed to fighting it. That's especially true when meat is added to the equation and the dilemmas aren't merely about health and sustainability, but morality as well. During the current legislative session, two bills were introduced that deal with a pair of hot-button delicacies: foie gras and shark fin soup. “The practice of shark finning, where a shark is caught, the fin is cut off, and the shark is returned to the water, causes tens of millions of sharks to die a slow death each year,” reads the measure text of SB2169. “Some sharks starve to death, others are slowly eaten by other fish, and some drown because most sharks need to keep moving to force water through their gills for oxygen.” The bill sought to outlaw the possession, sale or distribution of shark

fins statewide (shark finning is already illegal in Hawaii, but many restaurants have fins shipped in from elsewhere). Meanwhile, SB2170 argues that the force-feeding associated with foie gras (literally, “fat liver) leads to increased mortality from puncture wounds and infections in the birds' throats and “the numerous side effects of having an enlarged liver, such as diarrhea, bone demineralization, and other digestive diseases. The bill mandates that “a product shall not be sold or distributed in the State if it is the result of force feeding a bird for the purpose of enlarging the bird's liver beyond normal size. (“Bird is defined as either a goose or duck, the two fowl used to make foie gras). SB2169 was passed by the legislature this week, while SB2170 died in committee in February. But whether or not they become laws is, in some respects, less important than the debate they re-ignited: a tug-of-war between cultural advocates, business interests and the animal rights community that runs especially deep in the melting pot that is Hawaii.

P

redictably, much of the measure testimony in favor of both bills came from animal rights groups and, in the case of the shark fin ban, conservationists and ocean researchers. They present attention-grabbing, at times shocking statistics (73 to 100 million sharks are killed annually, as bycatch or for their fins, according to Marine Levine, director of Princeton's Shark Research Institute) and impassioned pleas (“Sharks have been slaughtered in astonishing numbers, said Maui resident David Fleetham, quoted in testimony from the Hawaii Wildlife Fund. “A combination of misinformation from Hollywood depicting sharks as blood thirsty killers and ignorance has brought these calm, careful, cautious and magnificent creatures to their collective knees.). The Humane Society, meanwhile, dismissed shark-fin soup consumers as “an affluent few. But not everyone sees it that way. “[T]his legislation plainly supports discrimination against Chinese which, given the history of Chinese in the United States, is not unheard [of] and discrimination against native Hawaiians, whose use of coastal sharks in cultural practices...is threatened, wrote Charles M. Ka'ai'ai. (Proving how divisive and multifaceted this issue is, some testimony in support of the bill also centered on Native Hawaiian culture, and the sacred role of sharks, or mano.) Clay Tam, who identified himself as a Voting, Tax paying Fisherman of Hawaii, called shark-fin soup “a significant part of the Chinese culture as the soup provides health and spiritual benefits. The same dichotomy plays out in the foie gras bill testimony. “[These animals] are inhumanely treated...simply to provide a gourmet food item for humans, wrote Lorraine Sakaguchi of Honolulu. “[T]hey are forced to consume severely restricted types of food in massive quantities that they would not choose to eat if given any

free choice about the matter at all. Nor would they choose to be painfully (or, at best, uncomfortably) fed with the use of tubes and augers. “People worldwide are increasingly associating foie gras with extreme cruelty to animals, said Big Island resident Eva Davis, adding that numerous countries and states have already moved to ban the substance (California's ban is set to take effect in 2012). On the other side of the ledger, Oahu chef and restaurant owner Nicolas Chaize said he “grew up in France on a duck farm and that foie gras is “an essential part of cooking, something that's been “[passed] on generation after generation. The Hawaii Farm Bureau (HFB) suggested the claims of animal rights activists are overblown. “According to veterinarians and other scientists who have witnessed and studied foie gras production practices, they are neither cruel nor inhumane, HFB wrote (no specific studies are cited, though it is true some groups, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, have not taken a position on the issue). “Animals certainly deserve respect and compassion, continues the testimony. “They should not be made to suffer. However, because their anatomies are completely different from humans, it makes no sense to anthropomorphize ducks and geese into people.

F

or some, including groups like PETA, meat is murder. Period, end of discussion. For others, including farmers and the lobby organizations that support them, killing animals is a way of life; human safety (and profits) are the only concern. Between those polarized extremes lies a vast gray area. Most people agree animals shouldn't be tortured or made to suffer unnecessarily. But what does that mean in practice? Is there ever truly a humane way to kill a living thing? Opponents of both SB2169 and SB2170 point out that there are alternatives to the severe practices that outrage activists and make headlines. Finning isn't the only way to harvest shark fins, it's just the cheapest and most expedient. Ditto force-feeding for foie gras. Perhaps the answer is to ban the objectionable methods, not the food itself. Then again, that's unlikely to satisfy hardline fur-and-fin crusaders. “Banning [foie gras] is the foot in the door for questioning all animal agriculture,â€? wrote HFB. “Should we dictate what people can and cannot eat? Should we ban kalua pig, Spam, hamburger, eggs, and chicken katsu next?â€? The thing is, the other side would probably answer that rhetorical question with an unequivocal yes. This is a line-inthe-sand situation; a workable compromise may be impossible. Much like abortion, the death penalty and other life-and-death quandaries, there are really only two sides—and you're on one or the other, based (in this case) on what you choose to put in your mouth. â–

Self-Serve, Take Two Central Maui gets another DIY frozen-yogurt shop Yogurtland Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, Kahului Sun.-Thur., 10am-10pm; Fri.-Sat., 10am-11pm 871-2733

I

f one self-serve frozen yogurt shop is good, two is better. Truism? Yogurtland is hoping so, because a few weeks ago they opened a location at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, within shouting distance of competitor Tutti Frutti’s Kahului store. (Yogurtland also has a West side outpost, at Whalers Village.) Yogurtland and Tutti Frutti (and an array of other shops that have popped up in recent years, rekindling a craze from the ’80s and ’90s) have a similar layout and protocol: a row of self-serve stations lines one wall, followed by a toppings bar and, finally, the register,

PHOTOS BY ALYSSA HABER-DE LEON

where the frigid concoctions are weighed and paid for. The selections at Yogurtland include flavors both universally familiar (vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream) and locally aimed (taro, coconut, pineapple). Most of the yogurt is labeled fat-free, but you wouldn’t know it by the taste: it’s tart but surprisingly creamy, lacking the watery blandness that often leaves me yearning for one of those 31 flavors from that other joint. Yogurtland makes its own yogurt, a fact that co-owner Charlin Johnston told HawaiiBusiness magazine in January, “makes our flavors just a cut above the rest.” Toppings—fruits, nuts, sprinkles and crushed-up candy bars—are ample. (Highly recommended pairing: cheesecake yogurt and Heath-bar chunks; get the big cup or you’ll be licking the bottom wishing for more.) Seating is limited, but a lot of people seemed to be taking their treats to go, probably for a stroll around the mall. Another cool note is that they use brightly colored, biodegradable spoons, significantly lowering the footprint of a place that tosses hundreds of utensils daily. Certainly there will come a point when Central Maui’s self-serve frozen yogurt needs are met. Whether we’ve already reached that point remains to be seen. But Yogurtland—and more to the point, its yogurt—is definitely good enough to justify a double scoop. ■

Coming soon to an air-conditioned theater near you...

M

y favorite movie season of the year is here again, bringing the usual mix of intelligent fare and dumb fun—plus a sing-along rerelease of Grease, which falls into some other category entirely. There’s the obligatory raft of sequels—a third Twilight, a second Sex and the City, a fourth Shrek, the return of the Predators, a Forgetting Sarah Marshall spinoff and followups to Nanny McPhee and Cats and Dogs that no one asked for—along with intriguing star vehicles like the actioner Salt starring Angelina Jolie and Nicolas Cage in a soupedup reimagining of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (yes, the brooms make an appearance). Then there’s the controversial Princess Kaiulani, in limited release this May after premiering at the Hawaii Film Festival last October, where it tied for the Best Feature Film award with Precious. Its much-hated former title, Barbarian Princess, has been tossed, but passionate debate is still guaranteed. Finally, there’s the summer’s biggest question mark, a remake of one of my favorite movies, The Karate Kid, which I’ll give a fair chance, despite my loyalty to Pat Morita’s unbeatable wax on/wax off technique. Here are ten more to catch in between bouts of surfing and guri-guri consumption.

If it’s not better than the first, it could drop faster than you can say “Wolverine. Best-Case Scenario: It’s so good, audiences forget they wasted time watching Transformers 2.

Robin Hood (May 14) The Gist: Ridley Scott’s take on the Prince of Thieves and his Men in Tights stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Why It Could Rock: Pixar’s model of story and character first, visual razzmatazz second is what makes their movies unbeatable. Unless: Did we really need another Toy Story? Wouldn’t The Incredibles Return have been better? Best-Case Scenario: We get a scene where Buzz Lightyear knocks Tickle-Me Elmo on his furry butt.

Continued from page 14 Unless: The similar Killers, which stars Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl and opens a month earlier, steals its thunder. Best-Case Scenario: Cruise scores a solid comeback, finally earning forgiveness for what he did to Oprah’s couch.

Inception (July 16) The Gist: Bat-director Christopher Nolan wrote and directed this thriller about corporate espionage and the nature of dreams. Stars Leonardo Di Caprio, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ken Watanabe. Why It Could Rock: The plot is top secret, the trailer is jaw dropping and it looks smart and exciting enough for adults and teens alike. Unless: The story is more confusing than dazzling to audiences. The Dark Knight is a tough act to follow. Best-Case Scenario: The mixture of smarts and thrills make it the summer’s most talked-about film.

The Adjustment Bureau (July 30)

Schwarzenegger! Unless: Writer/director Stallone is hit and miss with dialogue, not that anyone will care. Will the summer’s action overload make it old hat come August? Best-Case Scenario: Makes The A-Team look wimpy by comparison.

The Gist: Matt Damon and Emily Blunt star in this Philip K. Dick fantasy thriller. Why It Could Rock: Dick’s best stories gave us Blade Runner and Total Recall. Unless: Green Zone proved that Damon’s star power has its limits. This is screenwriter-turned-director George Nolfi’s first movie; does he have what it takes? Best-Case Scenario: A sci-fi date movie better than The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Eat Pray Love (August 13) The Gist: Julia Roberts stars in this romantic comedy based on the bestselling novel. Why It Could Rock: Ladies, this is supposed to be this summer’s Julie & Julia. The book is on Oprah’s Book Club and it’s one of the few female-friendly summer attractions. Unless: The plot is a lot like Under the Tuscan Sun, which was no Julie & Julia. Best-Case Scenario: Roberts reminds us why she is America’s favorite actress. The Expendables (August 13)

Eat Pray Love

The Gist: Hardcore action/adventure starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham... Why It Could Rock:‌Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Arnold

Piranha 3-D (August 27) The Gist: Horror remake stars Elisabeth Shue, Richard Dreyfuss (yes, he's gonna need a bigger boat...) and hundreds of hungry fish. Why It Could Rock: Girls and gore, what every 17-year-old wants to see in 3-D. It should wipe the floor with Step Up 3-D; The Final Destination racked up $70 million in this slot last year. Unless: 3-D fatigue finally kicks in. Plus, The Final Destination sucked. Best-Case Scenario: It scares tourists away from Maui beaches and gives locals more leg room on the sand. â– To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/ďŹ lm42

Honoring the Onion

Thursday (April 29)-Friday (May 7), islandwide

Friday (April 30), 6pm; Sat (May 1), 9:30am-9pm

To be honest, classical music isn't something I indulge in often. After all, a workout is best accompanied by Kylie Minogue and my Buick likes to rev up during rush hour traffic to Kid Cudi. However, today, in honor of the Maui Classical Music Festival, I re-tuned my Pandora station to fit in some Bach and Beethoven between the regulars. Turns out that classical music is just as entertaining as the rest of my playlist; I certainly found myself less hasty to use the “skip option than I usually am. To get those neuron transmitters firing, take it one step further and sprawl out with a notepad and pencil. Turn on the classical tunes, and sketch whatever images the music brings to mind. This is a good plan for those who find regular meditation to be more like a kindergarten nose-in-the-corner time-out. Whether you're an orchestral newbie like me or a seasoned connoisseur, listening to unimposing, love-inducing classical music will be an enlightening experience. Here’s your guide to hit up these sweet spots throughout the week: April 29, 1:45pm at Kihei Charter School; May 1, 7pm at Makawao Union Church; May 3, 7pm at Keawala'i Congregation Chruch in Makena; May 5, 7pm at Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana; May 7, 7pm at Makawao Union Church. The onions growing on the slopes of Haleakala are so coveted they have a trademark to protect them from imposters. There are only a handful of places on Earth that grow sweet onion, and Maui is one of them. We celebrate our world-famous produce with a shindig at Whalers Village once a year. This year's bulb-themed blowout will kick off with a five-course dinner, paired with Maui Brewing Co.'s beers and Hula Grill's Barefoot Brew. I love the drama infused into Hula Grill Chef Scott McGill's menu; the entree course will feature Lucifer's Angel Ale served with beer-braised lamb and grilled mahi-mahi with Dungeness crab. The winner of last year's recipe contest, David Paul, also has a hand in the menu. Even your dessert course features beer, this time with ice cream floating in it. Come back to Whalers Village the next day for the Onion Festival; it's an all-day event starting at 9:30am. Local chefs Roy Yamaguchi, D.K. Kodama, David Paul and James McDonald will be doing demonstrations, and TV celeb chef Cutty Cutler will teach kids and parents how to make fruit smoothies. Then watch folks compete in the raw Maui onion-eating contest. Music on the beach starts at 1pm with the Air Force Band of the Pacific followed by Benoit Jazz Works and Versatile. Spade to Order

The Lord Thy Godspell

Friday (April 30, 9-11pm, Maui Theatre, Lahaina, $35-$125

Friday-Sunday (April 30-May 16), Iao Theater, Wailuku, $18-$20

SNL alum David Spade always plays unlikable, snooty characters, yet, inexplicably, seems as if in real life he'd be a pleasant dude. If you’ve ever taken a sick day, you know that he’s the squirrely little blond man who spends the morning cheerfully torturing his co-workers on Just Shoot Me, then also pops up during an hour of afternoon programming in re-runs of 8 Simple Rules. While the acting of most daytime TV performers is mildly painful, Spade’s humor fits him like a second skin; he’s always amusing, upbeat and cheerfully cheeky. On 8 Simple Rules he's an unambitious mooch who lives in his aunt’s house, but is supportive to his younger cousins, giving them (generally) good moral lessons. His stand-up act isn't so squeaky-clean. Don’t get offended when he starts talking about roofies, late-night booty calls and the fact that he isn’t worried about Miley Cyrus and thinks that she will turn out just fine. Brian Evans, creator of The Maui Celebrity Series and opening act for Jay Leno in Las Vegas, will play Spade's wingman for the night. 856-7973, themauicelebrityseries.com [SB]

The most impressive dramatic role of all time? “Yeah, I’m playing the omnipotent voice of God‌â€? Godspell is a production that will rouse even the sleepiest attendees, boasting lots of room for creativity and improvisation, accompanied by a slew of rock music. This play is all about the vivacious actors making big sounds and movements to keep the stage alive and interactive. If it's been a while since you’ve been to sunday school—or if you're a vampire in danger of bursting into flames upon entering a church—attending Godspell is a good way to brush up on the Gospel According to St. Matthew. Add up the zesty thespians, internationally beloved music, including the hit “Day by Day,â€? choreography by Alexander Card, direction by Alexis Dascoulias, and musical direction by Steven Dascoulias, and Maui Onstage has once again concocted a great evening for quiet little Maui. 244-8680, mauionstage.com [SB]

Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You already know that sometimes to make room for something new to come into your life, you have to walk away from something already taking up the space. Occasionally, the universe even intervenes and slams a door in your face, forcing you to move on. That’s pretty likely to happen this week. Instead of becoming morose and slowing down the whole process by feeling sorry for yourself, concentrate on being proactive and optimistic. Acknowledge that life has decided it’s time for you to move on to brighter and better things—ready or not, here they come.

SIGN

AGE LANGU

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) There’s such a thing as trusting your gut, and then there’s becoming paranoid enough to take every suspicion or hunch seriously. Conspiracy theorists—even when they’re right—are notorious bores. Don’t become one of those royal drags, please. Stay attuned to the subtle clues provided by your instincts, but be rational enough to dismiss some of them as highly unlikely. They’re not what’s happening this week, and if you care enough to look for them, simpler, better explanations can be found for almost everything you encounter. Avoid the ridiculously out-there paranoid fantasies and stick to those instead.

Quizunderstood answers 1. Lele 2. Pacific Commercial Advertiser (founded 1856) and the Evening

Bulletin (founded 1882) 3. C. 4. A. (for a complete list, go to mauitime.com)

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’ve heard the expression, “failure is not an option,” but you’ve rarely applied it to yourself. In fact, it seems like all too often you allow failure to be an option too early in the game. Cross it off your list of possible outcomes—as long as it’s there, it’s all too easy to manifest. That’s a deep and difficult mental shift to make, but it’s an important habit to instill in yourself. Nothing on your current to-do list is something you need to fail at—it’s all perfectly achievable. Failure shouldn’t be an option; stop including it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Whoever you’re dealing with is coming from a different place and perspective, and while their behavior may be exasperating and confusing, it’s not baseless. Take a few minutes to vividly imagine how you’re coming off to them, based on where they’re coming from, and come up with a way to shift the dynamic to one that results in a happier scenario for everyone. Yes, this may involve some acting (but not necessarily lying). Leos are notoriously self-centered; it’s difficult for you to step into someone else’s shoes. But I know you’re capable of it. This week, prove me right.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) While trusting your gut is good most of the time, it occasionally fails you completely. Sometimes you must give people the benefit of the doubt because they deserve it. Your suspicions are incorrect, and making a big deal out of them will just make you into the bad guy. This doesn’t mean you always need to turn a blind eye to what you think is going on—but this week it’d be a good idea, because you’re just plain wrong. Assume that most everyone in your life is looking out for you and your well being, at least for the moment, and carry on without undue suspicion.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) There was a time when you could eat anything you wanted and wear whatever you found lying around and still look good. (Some call it youth.) Nowadays it takes a little bit more effort to be at your sexiest. That’s okay. This is just one of the more obvious and concrete examples of what happens when you move into a different chapter of life. The story continues! Although it’s perfectly okay to think fondly of those supposedly carefree days, it’s important that most of your head is in the game that’s happening right now. Be where you’re at.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Don’t settle for less than the real thing. That doesn’t mean holding out for some unreachable ideal, but rather that you simply get the authentic version of whatever’s there, good and bad. The good had better be genuine, because the bad sure will be. I value someone who’s real over a great actor any day. The actor type may make everything seem fantastic, but in the end it’s too good to be true. If what you see is what you get, and you can live with that, take it. If, however, you suspect there’s a whole lot you’re not getting to see, hold off until the big picture reveals itself.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) There’s a lot going on in one particular scenario in your life that you’re not particularly comfortable with, but so far you’ve been biting your tongue and trying to stay out of it. Of course, that can only go on for so long with someone as committed to truth and justice as you usually are. If you’re going to step up and say or do something about the stuff you don’t agree with, this week is the perfect time to do so. If you don’t take this window, you’re better off just learning to live with the compromises inherent in that situation—they’re likely to continue for a long, long time.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Sometimes when a dog has a minor cut, he’ll lick it obsessively until he’s actually created a wound that’s worse and more painful than the original. You’re in danger of doing something like that here. It’s okay to hole up and lick your wounds and heal from the shit the world’s thrown at you, but there are limits. Cross those, and you’ll make the whole situation worse. Go chill out and rest up for a little bit if you need to. But keep the wallowing to a minimum. When you first have an inkling that it might be time to get back out into the world again, don’t give it a second thought—just get up and go.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I know you’re good at heeding and responding to social cues, and adept at making people like you. But sometimes that’s the last thing you want to do. Did it ever occur to you that you might not particularly want to fit in with this crowd? Laughing at their awful jokes and tacitly agreeing with their views (perhaps just by biting your tongue) is not only kind of deplorable, it’s taking you away from yourself. This isn’t who you really are. This is one of those instances where a strength can become a weakness; in this case, your ability to fit in anywhere could, if you’re not careful, get you into situations you’ll certainly regret.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s much easier to tear holes in someone else’s ideas and decisions than to step up and create and champion some yourself. Are you willing to do that? Do you really think you’d be better at it? Be leery of offering more than the most gentle critique to those who’ve taken on those responsibilities, because it’s all too likely that if you push even a little bit too hard, they may just hand over the reins and say, “What a relief, you can do it.” After they’ve walked away, leaving you to pick up the messy pieces, you’ll be asking yourself, “What have I gotten myself into?” Since that question has no happy answer, I suggest you bite your tongue before you rip someone else’s leadership to shreds.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You can bluff your way through a poker game, a business negotiation, or buying a car. You can even bluff through part of a relationship—but unlike the other scenarios, where people may never call your bluff until it’s too late, doing so in an interpersonal relationship will be something you’ll soon regret. When—and yes, it’s when and not if—they call that bluff, they’ll want a better explanation than you can come up with, and walk (or run) away when you can’t provide it. Think about that before you insert any false pretenses (however well-meaning) into this particular scenario.
