The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL Picking on campaign fliers is too easy. Also, it's not very interesting. Aside from the occasional Souki sponge, candidates rarely get creative with their self-promotion, opting instead for the usual mix of bullet-pointed accomplishments (or “accomplishments”), platitude-laden promises and grip-and-grin photos, featuring some combination of children, old people and/or hard hats. But I can't let this one pass. A couple weeks ago, while discussing Sol Kaho'ohalahala's Mayoral candidacy, I wrote: “others, including former Planning Director Chris Hart, have entered the race, but none seem likely to make a significant splash.” It wasn't intended as a personal knock against Hart, just an observation that so far he doesn't appear to be a legitimate contender. Of course, it's early; things could change. Then I got a campaign flier from the Hart camp that features, prominently, a Maui News quote calling him “highly respected” and noting his “professional approach.” So what's wrong with that? Nothing, except that the quote is from 1990. Which leaves only two possibilities, neither of them good: no one has said anything nice about Hart since the first Bush Administration, or his campaign team looked at a mildly laudatory, 20-yearold quote and thought, “Bingo!”...
LOCAL Last month, Spin Cycle reviewed the troubling history of Aloha Tower Development Corp. (ATDC), a public corporation formed in 1981 to oversee construction in the area around the historic Aloha Tower lighthouse on Oahu. Since then, ATDC has pretty much defined failure. On April 8, State Auditor Marion Higa blasted the corporation, calling it “flawed, obsolete and mismanaged.” Four days later, Gov. Lingle released $900,000 in state funds to settle a lawsuit brought
fine. In the first quarter of 2009, Alexander & Baldwin made a $3 million profit. In the first quarter of 2010, according to a company statement released earlier this week, that figure rose to $17.3 million. The spike is due mostly to A&B's real estate and shipping arms, though, according to CEO Stanley Kuriyama, the “expectation for significant improvement in agribusiness performance in 2010 is unchanged.” Of course, it wouldn't be an A&B release without this, also from Kuriyama: “although market prices for sugar have fallen recently... we continue to focus our efforts on restoring profitability and maintaining access to water” (emphasis added, unnecessarily for the discerning reader)....
This is what creativity looks like.
NOT LOCAL by a Texas developer (one of several lawsuits filed against ATDC). Ah, but then there was SB2942, a bill that would have dismantled ATDC and transferred its duties to other, existing agencies. Later, the bill was amended (read: had its teeth ripped out), with the new goal to “[establish] a task force to determine the feasibility and economic effects of”...well, you get the picture. Even that de-fanged version didn't gain traction, and SB2942 died a quiet death in committee, meaning ATDC has at least one more year to become even more flawed and obsolete.... Hats off to the Honolulu Weekly for putting Rafael del Castillo on the cover. Who's Rafael del Castillo, you ask? Exactly. “Despite the fact that Honolulu's special congressional election has largely been reported as a race between three familiar, highly polarizing politicians, the ballots that will begin to appear in Honolulu voters' mailboxes next week will feature the names of 14 candidates,” reads the story, written by Weekly Managing Editor Adrienne LaFrance. Del Castillo is one of those 14 candidates, and his
resume is impressive. Though Mauians don't get to vote in this election, it obviously holds significance for all of Hawaii. For the complete story, go to honoluluweekly.com.... Speaking of those three polarizing politicians, Republican Charles Djou is gaining momentum; a recent Honolulu Advertiser poll puts him ahead of both Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa, his Democratic rivals. Fearing a Scott Brown redux—and in his home state no less—President Obama is apparently planning to work the phones (in pre-recorded form). “Aloha, this is President Barack Obama on behalf of the Democratic Party,” reads the text of a message that will start going out to Honolulu voters, according to a KITV report. “As you know, there is an election for Congress taking place and your support for a Democrat is crucial for us in pushing forward our agenda for change.” Seriously guys: if you elect Djou, how is Obama going to meet his goal of turning us into a socialist dictatorship by Christmas?... The long-term viability of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar may be in doubt, but its parent company is doing
Hey, you know whose opinion about the BP oil spill I don't want to hear? Brownie's. You remember Brownie, aka Michael Brown, the only man ever to head up both FEMA and the International Arabian Horse Association, and the dude who was in charge of managing disasters when we kind of mismanaged that little disaster down in the Gulf. During a recent sit-down with FOX News (They Interview Incompetent Former Bureaucrats, You Decide), Brownie suggested that Obama allowed the spill to spread to forward his anti-Big Oil agenda. “This is exactly what they want, because now he can pander to the environmentalists and say, 'I'm gonna shut it down because it's too dangerous,'” said Brownie. “This president has never supported Big Oil, he's never supported offshore drilling, and now he has an excuse to shut it back down.” You know those environmentalists: destroy one ecosystem and you'll never hear the end of it. ■

Civil Unions: Will She Sign? Lingle stays mum on HB444 “
T
his is a decision that will live in history. The stance we take now will be remembered. Sitting passively on the sidelines and tossing up your hands doesn't cut it. Neither does straddling the fence, trying to placate intolerant people—decent and well intentioned as they may be—who hide behind their clergyman, their upbringing or their own ignorance-steeped fears...”
day as the House vote. “If the Legislature wanted to establish the equivalent of samesex marriage, they should have put it on the ballot for the people to decide.” “This bill should not be allowed to become law,” Aiona added, in case there was any doubt about his feelings. Last year, before HB444 was derailed, there was speculation that, if it passed, Lingle might leave the state and allow Aiona
This is a big moment for our Governor. As she prepares to leave office, she has a chance to do something significant, to strike a resounding blow for civil rights. We wrote that in March 2009. At the time, the state legislature was considering HB444, a bill that, anyone who's paid even a modicum of attention knows, would legalize same-sex civil unions in Hawaii, granting gay couples some of the same rights as married straight couples. Now, more than a year later, both the state Senate and House have passed HB444. It survived protests, revisions and political backpedaling. It made national headlines and sparked a heated, protracted debate that featured the predictable mix of gay-rights groups and anti-gay crusaders. But to retrace HB444's circuitous history isn't the point. The point is that, after the House passed the bill with a 31-20 vote last week, it is now one signature away from becoming law. That signature, of course, must come from the hand of Gov. Linda Lingle, who has remained strangely silent about her intentions, even in the face of mounting scrutiny and repeated media inquiries. As of this writing, Lingle hasn't released a statement acknowledging the bill's passage, let alone indicated which way she's leaning. She has until July 6 to sign, veto or allow the bill to move forward without her signature. We know what Lt. Gov., Duke Aiona thinks. “The State House's last-minute political maneuvering is unfortunate for the people of Hawaii who have voiced their support for traditional marriage,” Aiona said in a statement released April 29, the same
to veto the bill. It's a move that would play well with Aiona's religious base, a base he's counting on to help him in this year's gubernatorial election. Lingle and Aiona both recently returned from a California trip, however, and with 250 bills headed for her desk, it would seem an odd time to jet off again. One way or the other, this looks like Lingle's call. If she does exercise veto power, the legislature won't have enough votes for an override. And even if they did, House and Senate leaders have indicated they won't push for another vote. This is a big moment for our Governor. Over the past eight years, we've made no secret of the fact that we disapprove of her governing style and disagree with many of her policies and decisions. But now, as she prepares to leave office, she has a chance to do something significant, to strike a resounding blow for civil rights. This is, as we wrote last year, a decision that will live in history. Let's hope Lingle, and Hawaii, come down on the right side. ■
If you feel passionate about this issue either way, it's worth noting the Governor is soliciting feedback (not just on HB444, but all the bills she has to consider). Follow the link at hawaii.gov/gov. To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/upfront46
LCWATCH RESTORING BALANCE
L
ast month, we told you about the case of Ron McOmber, the Adjudication Board nominee (and former Liquor Commission and Adjudication member) who the County Council rejected after past allegations of sexual harassment and other issues were brought forward. The current nominee for that still-vacant Adjudication seat is Linda Fernandez, who's awaiting Council approval. Both McOmber and Fernandez are from Lanai. This led several readers to ask if there are currently any Lanai residents on either of the LC's boards. The answer is no. Now, there's no rule that says all parts of the county must be represented on boards and commissions. The County Charter says only that when making appointments, “the mayor shall give due consideration to balanced geographic representation.” So how balanced are the LC boards? The Adjudication Board has eight members (minus the empty seat). At present, it breaks down like this: two (Donald Fujii and Bill Kanaka) from Wailuku, two (Marilyn Colvin and Marilyn Chapman) from Kihei, one (Ralph Masdada) from Kula, one (Glenn Kunitake) from Kahului and one (Jerrybeth DeMello) from Lahaina. The nine members of the Liquor Commission, meanwhile, are dispersed thusly: three (Edwin Yokouchi, Robert Tanaka and Lee Ohigashi) from Wailuku, two (James Gomes and Monica Revells) from Kula and one each from Lahaina (Blackie Gadarian), Pukalani (Merlyn Winters), Kihei (M.D. Alborano) and Molokai (Henry Kauka Jr.). That's a decent sampling all things considered. The fact that, say, Makawao doesn't have a rep doesn't seem like such a big deal; someone from Kula or Pukalani probably has that area covered. On the other hand, you could argue that it's essential for Lanai and Molokai to both be represented since only a resident would have adequate knowledge of the liquor-selling establishments in those places (insert joke about LC boardmembers' knowledge of liquorselling establishments and liquor in general here). Which makes it a good thing (in theory) that Fernandez—who Mayoral assistant Marian Feenstra told LC Watch was the “only other person on the list”—applied. ■ - Jacob Shafer

SPIN CYCLE Outside intrusion... “This outside intrusion into a Hawaii political campaign is unprecedented and unnecessary. There should be no need for a mainland Democrat group to be involved unless they are afraid of how the people of Hawaii will vote.” - From an April 8 statement by U.S. House candidate Charles Djou, responding to attack ads funded by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Too bad Djou doesn't have any support from Mainland interests. Well, except for the fundraiser hosted by Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele in January. Or the $94,305 that was transfered from the RNC to the Hawaii Republican Party in March, according to the most recent filing with the Federal Elections Committee. Or the $51,300 Djou's campaign has received from Political Action Committees not based in Hawaii. Or the two appearances he's made on FOX News in the last three months (February 4 on Red Eye; April 21 on The Sean Hannity Show, during which Hannity told Djou, after a series of softballs, “I like everything that you're saying”). Other than that, he's on his own.

OUTSOURCE OF OUR PROBLEMS American companies continue trying to outsource work overseas, no matter how increasingly improbable the project. The Chronicle of Higher Education in April reported on the University of Houston business school's contract to have student papers uploaded to “teaching assistants (mostly residing in India, Singapore and Malaysia), who read them, mark them up and offer constructive advice. UH professor Lori Whisenant, who initiated the university's contract with the firm EduMetry, said she is generally pleased with the results.
EXPENSIVE CRAP (1) Swiss clockmaker Artya announced in March the creation of a wristwatch set in fossilized dinosaur feces (with a strap made with skin from an American cane toad). Designer Yvan Arpa told the Associated Press the watch would sell for about $12,000. (2) The spa Ten Thousand Waves near Santa Fe, N.M., is only the latest U.S. facility to offer as a “signature treatment the “Japanese Nightingale Facial, supposedly used for centuries by Japanese geisha for skin rejuvenation. Nightingale droppings are dried and sanitized, then spiced with oils and used as a face scrubber.
BOB MARSHALL'S MOM MUST HAVE HAD A TON OF ABORTIONS... Virginia state legislator Bob Marshall, speaking in February in opposition to state funding for Planned Parenthood, said the organization is partly responsible for the number of disabled children in America. According to the Old Testament, he said, being forced to bear a disabled child is punishment for the mother's having earlier aborted her first-born. “[W] hen you abort the first-born...nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children. Said Marshall, the organization ought to call itself “Planned Barrenhood.
STROKE OF BAD LUCK When stroke victims recover, they sometimes acquire bizarre obsessions, like one by David Stopher of North Tynesdale, England, who found himself unable to say no to salespeople. According to a March Daily Mail report, the biggest beneficiary of Stopher's condition has been the wireless telephone network (known as 3), whose marketers had signed Stopher up for six different phones and plans at the same time. (He was paying for all of them on time until his brothers stepped in to persuade 3 to restructure the account).
WHAT ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF YOGA ON COCAINE-ADDLED MENOPAUSAL MONKEYS? A North Carolina research organization in March, picking the state's 10 worst destinations for federal stimulus grants, included two ongoing projects at Wake

GROSSEST SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP EVER Researchers from Royal Roads University in Canada reported last year that the large, carnivorous pitcher plants of Borneo prefer to eat insects and spiders, but where those are in short supply, as in the Philippines highlands, the pitchers have grown to a size accommodating an alternative source of the nitrogen they need. The pitchers have “learned that if they produce copious amounts of nectar, it will attract the tiny-mouse-sized tree shrew to harvest it, and the shrews, trapped inside the plant, will leave droppings directly on the spot most advantageous for the pitcher to consume them. Said professor Charles Clarke, discovery of the arrangement “totally blew us away.

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) Police in Berwick, Maine, made an easy collar in April, solving four residential burglaries. As it turns out, their two suspects (ages 33 and 32) committed the crimes while wearing their GPS monitoring bracelets following an earlier arrest in New Hampshire, and their movements perfectly coincided with the burglars' route. (2) In April, the Drug Warehouse burglar in Tulsa, Oklahoma, escaped, but the crime was captured on surveillance video and features the perp, apparently hearing sirens, grabbing his ladder and scrambling up through the ceiling to find the passage he used to get in. However, as he scrambled, he kept falling through the ceiling to the floor, only to have to try again. He fell to the floor six times, but apparently escaped on the seventh try. â– To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/notw46

BREAST INTENTIONS Despite increased acceptance, breastfeeding remains a complex, controversial subject. A special Mother’s Day report
T
hey’re marketing tools, advertising gimmicks and one of Heidi Klum’s best features. We restrain them, expose them, even enhance them but often forget what they’re made for. Seems only right that this Mother’s Day we should celebrate breasts, not as Victoria's Secret-type objects of desire but as they were meant to be: life-sustaining sources of nourishment. Why is it that we’re OK with Pamela Anderson, former Baywatch babe, routinely strutting her surgically enhanced stuff but are squeamish if Mom provides baby a snack in a public place? (In some states it goes beyond squeamishness and is actually considered indecent exposure.) And why does social commentator Bill Maher get lots of laughs when he says, “Breastfeeding a baby is an intimate act, and I don't want to watch strangers performing intimate acts. At least not for free.” Breastfeeding has somehow gotten tied up in America’s schizophrenic view of sex. In popular culture, overt sexuality (and breasts)

sell. But take it (or them) off the pages of a magazine and put them at the next table in a restaurant and the puritanical streak still running through our psyche is triggered. This hasn’t always been the case. Since breastfeeding is both the natural means of feeding a baby and a defining characteristic of being a mammal, it’s obviously been the norm rather than the exception throughout history. Mothers nursed—often publicly— in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Japan and India. Check the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; you’ll even see evidence of it there. Fast forward to the early 20th century, post-WWII especially. Formula companies like Nestle were mostly to blame for breastfeeding taking a back seat to the bottle. They promoted and marketed the living daylights out of their products, espousing the “superiority of formula” over breast milk. And women believed it, sometimes with disastrous results. In Third World nations, women mixed the powder with contaminated water or diluted it to save money. Millions of babies suffered severe malnourishment and even death.
By Nancy Kanyuk
These days, formula companies—or “masters of misinformation” as Nancy Irvine, lactation consultant and local childbirth educator calls them—are being held more or less accountable through laws like the International Code of Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes. But now they use more subtle techniques to woo women over to the “wonders” of formula—like providing free formula and other “goodies” to new mothers as they leave the hospital.
T
he road to successful breastfeeding is littered with old wives tales, superstitions and even out-and-out lies. According to Kim Clelland, MPH and registered dietician with the Women, Infants and Children program at the Malama I Ke Ola Health Center, new (and often young) mothers worry that it's going to hurt and that they won’t be able to produce enough milk, neither of which is true in most cases. And the belief that formula is somehow more convenient than breast milk should be considered a non-starter. Isn’t it obvious that breastfeeding mothers have their feeding
equipment with them at all times? Study after study shows that no formula can duplicate the properties of breast milk no matter how many supplements, vitamins or minerals are added. In fact, the list of benefits reads like a primer of health and wellness. Breastfeeding protects babies against stomach upsets, ear infections, respiratory illnesses, allergies, asthma, meningitis, childhood lymphoma, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative entercolitis. It reduces the risk of childhood diabetes and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), helps increase bone density and reduces the risk of heart disease later in life. And, if that’s not enough, breastfed babies have higher IQs. Benefits to the mother include: easier post-pregnancy weight loss, shrinkage of the uterus to normal size, increased bone strength and a lowered risk of certain cancers. Plus, there's the obvious and essential bonding experience with your child. So why doesn’t everybody breastfeed? Here in the islands, many women do… at least for a while. In fact, the rates of breastfeeding are higher than the national average, according to CDC statistics—88
percent in Hawaii compared to the national average of 73 percent. But those numbers drop significantly at six months, in Hawaii to 56 percent and nationally to 43 percent. They drop again at a year, in Hawaii to 35 percent and nationally to 21 percent. According to both Irvine and Clelland, the problem is often easy access to formula. Says Irvine, “We have higher failure rates because of mothers receiving samples from formula companies.” Clelland, whose office is actually mandated to have formula available for free, says that “for those sitting on the fence [about breastfeeding] the formula looks very attractive… because for young girls, if they can’t get past the first week they will stop.”
expectant mother of one. “It had pre-mixed formula with nipples just ready to instantly use with the flick of a wrist. I remember sitting with my little three-week-early baby who was hungry; I was sobbing... and actually questioning my amazing body that has nurtured this baby and fed her for 22 months after we finally got a hang of nursing. I should have known better than [to] take that junk out of the hospital.” Alyssa Haber-de Leon, a 29-year-old mother of two—who has no problem with nursing in public—says, “It makes me really sad that people feel that they can't nurse, or can't do it in public...it is such a natural and normal part of life. Our culture's sexualization of breasts has really screwed
Formula companies like Nestle were mostly to blame for breastfeeding taking a back seat to the bottle. Education is crucial when dealing with any mother but especially for teenage moms. Pat Regan, lactation educator at Kaiser. “When young girls get pregnant people want to keep punishing these girls,” says Irvine. “Let’s make them good mothers.” Irvine says she works with the whole family to make sure everyone's on board. She especially wants to have grandparents in her classes because “grandmothers can be a little resistant at first but come back after and suggest they wish they’d had something like this when they were giving birth. It takes a village. We live that here.” Clelland observes that “girls whose mothers say they can’t breastfeed will often do it as a rebellion, proving to their parents that they’re not selfish.” Surprisingly, she says that often changes the dynamic between mother and daughter—for the better. Lactation educator Pat Regan says Kaiser “is very pro-breastfeeding and gives out nothing from the formula companies—no diaper bags, no formula samples.” But, she adds, “the reality is, they’re lucky if they go six weeks. Some of the younger moms don’t do it because of the time. It takes dedication.” Maui High School has gone the extra mile to help pregnant and nursing students, forming the Maui High School Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program. The goal, says program coordinator Crystal Kondo, is to make sure these young women graduate. They offer core courses in English, social studies, math and science as well as pre-natal and parenting classes, including breastfeeding. Best of all, they also offer child care.
T
hen there are the women who know, even before they give birth, that they will breastfeed—those truly and preemptively committed to the cause. But even these new mothers can be challenged, both by issues of nursing in public and by the availability and seductiveness of formula. “Bringing home that formula bag from the hospital that Infamil calls a 'diaper bag' [is] really a Trojan horse, if you ask me,” says Akiko Shero, a 31-year-old
over babies nutritionally.” And nutrition is the key. While it happens less here than in developing countries, babies who are not breastfed often die. According to UNICEF, 6 million babies are saved every year through exclusive breastfeeding. Unfortunately, according to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, less than 35 percent of infants worldwide were exclusively breastfed for even the first four months of life. So are we doing the best we can to improve the number of women breastfeeding, in the U.S. and Hawaii in particular? The U.S. lags behind a lot of other developed nations in breastfeeding protection, promotion and support. Maternity leave, if it occurs at all, is much shorter than in countries like Canada and much of Western Europe. Thankfully, there is legislation on the books allowing for pumping in the workplace in all 50 states. This means that women who would otherwise have to wean can maintain a breastfeeding relationship even after going back to work (pumps are available for sale, rent or even free through WIC or the Maui High School program). There are also laws guaranteeing the right to nurse in a public place. This doesn’t mean that a nursing mother will not face discrimination while breastfeeding her child. In fact, according to a brochure outlining the laws in Hawaii, “the legislature found that on occasion, mothers have been told to leave public premises or have been discouraged from breastfeeding by being told to breastfeed in a restroom.” It happens less and less, but you still hear stories. (Recently, a popular Facebook group sprang up that put it succinctly: “If breastfeeding offends you, put a blanket over your head.”) All this brings us back to the original question: What is more indecent, buxom babe or breastfeeding mom? What's sad is that we still need to ask. ■

Chinese Food? On Maui? New Wailuku joint serves BBQ and local favorites, too King’s Chinese Restaurant and BBQ
Fried rice; (below) BBQ chicken.
197 N. Market St., Wailuku 242-8848 6:00am-9:30pm
T
here is no Chinese food on Maui. I hear that all the time, though honestly I don't know why. We have lots of Chinese food. Maybe not a lot of the typical, sit-down restaurants that offer delivery, and there's no Chinatown. But we definitely have Chinese food. The newest addition is King's Chinese Restaurant and BBQ, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Wailuku. Located near the intersection of Mill and Market in the spot that used to be Rosa's Mexican Cantina (and long ago a rockin' bar called Molina's), the restaurant is bright and cheerful. Little touches of Rosa's remain, including the giant red roses painted on the bathroom walls and the tables and chairs. There are a row of windows across each side of the building, giving you a nice breeze and lots to look at. King's menu has plenty of local favorites, Asian style barbecue and, of course, Chinese food. If you come in the morning and are expecting a Chinese breakfast, think again. Instead, they have a budget-friendly $2.99 breakfast special featuring corned-beef hash, two eggs and a scoop of rice. The other breakfast items are also reasonable; you can get grilled ham and cheese, B.L.T.s, pancakes or French toast, all for under $6. Breakfast starts at 6am. My first trip to King's was to grab some take-out for lunch. The chicken katsu was
“
generous and the cutlets were crispy. It's served in the white-food fashion with white rice and macaroni salad. I also tried the wontons, little deep-fried chinese pastry pockets filled with minced pork and vegetables, served with a hot-pink sweet and sour sauce. The fried food indulgence wasn't disappointing. The next time I popped in for a sit-down lunch and opted for the BBQ chicken and char siu fried rice. King's serves its dishes on rectangular lacquerware, a nice touch. A generous serving of boneless marinated thigh meat barbecued with the skin on is served with macaroni salad and rice. The marinade flavor is different from other local BBQ joints—a little less sweet but still delicious. I'd love it if there was a green salad option. Though, since I didn't eat the macaroni salad, it came home with leftovers and made dinner for my daughter, who loves it. (She gave King's version two greasy thumbs up.) The fried rice was also excellent, as was the char siu; the rice featured generous portions of veggies and egg and looked enticingly colorful on its lacquer platter. Though you'll have no problem placing an order, it's worth noting that the English here is minimal. Although, when eating at a Chinese place, that's just fine with me. â–

I'O ON THE BEACH 505 FRONT STREET, LAHAINA
808.661.8422 14 May 6, 2010
long time ago (two years, to be exact), I looked forward to spending all day at the beach, skimming until the world was a blur and, every so often, face-planting so hard that I would swear sand had lodged itself into my cranial cavity. I’m pretty sure the sand is still there, but now the only thing I look forward to is the mailman (usually because he’s delivering the fruits of my terrible, terrible eBay addiction). Instead of driving toward sunrises and running from sunsets, Monday mornings fill me with unspeakable dread; the only way I get a tan now is by staring at my computer screen. Thankfully, Slightly Stoopid, the band that played the soundtrack to my wonderful summer days (and sometimes not-so-wonderful summer nights) is here to stay. And they're coming to Maui. Slightly Stoopid is based in Ocean Beach, California. The band boasts dual frontmen, Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald (guitar, bass and vocals). The pair formed the group in high school, where they created a sound they describe as “a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop, and punk.” In 2000, Doughty and McDonald founded their own label, Stoopid Records, to avoid signing a deal with the Man while maintaining their DIY work ethic and keeping their music free from industry politics. Today, the band has grown to include Ryan “RyMo” Moran (drums), Oguer “OG” Ocon (congas, percussion, harp, vocals), C-Money (trumpet, keyboard) and DeLa (keyboard). Together, they've released a total of nine albums and live recordings.
They draw their influences from greats like Bob Marley, Sublime, Agent Orange and the Dead Kennedys. Slightly Stoopid sounds the way Sublime might have sounded if Brad Nowell had kept off the junk and stuck to the herb. Speaking of Nowell, it was thanks to him that Slightly Stoopid was first signed to a label (Nowell’s own Skunk Records), while the boys were still in high school. Musical tastes run the gamut on Maui; fortunately, Slightly Stoopid has something everyone can enjoy. Maybe you’re sick of chill, Sunday morning “Mellow Mood” music. Maybe you want to get stupid with your friends and a couple of green bottles? In the mood for something “Questionable”? Something that an “Officer” will come knocking at “2 am” about? Or maybe you're feeling really relaxed and looking for something that will help you feel “Closer to the Sun,” without paying for a dime bag? Perhaps the force is strong in you, and you want to proclaim your “Jedi” status to everyone. Even if you’re ready to have some knowledge dropped on you about the wild world of reefer madness, Slightly Stoopid is there to help all those squares with “This Joint.” While Slightly Stoopid’s albums reflect their high-energy style, it’s their live shows that really stand out. These dudes are known to jam endlessly, focusing on improvisation and crowd interaction. The group has played sold-out shows all over the world, including Australia, Japan, the U.K. and the Netherlands. They’ve gigged at prestigious venues like Coachella, Lollapalooza and the New Orleans Jazz Fest. And now, they’re hitting the Valley Isle. Whether you’re a diehard Stoopidhead or just experimenting (remember kids, it doesn’t count if you don’t inhale…or so I’m told), making time for this show is the smart choice. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music46

Snooze Fest Horror remake falls frighteningly short A Nightmare on Elm Street
★★★★★
Rated R/102 min.
I
remember when Freddy Mania hit in the '80s, and you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing Freddy Krueger, the monster played by Robert Englund in Wes Craven’s 1984 horror masterpiece, A Nightmare on Elm St. The character began as a frightening embodiment of our collective boogeyman fears, but the seven (!) sequels lightened Craven’s dark vision and Krueger became more a tongue-incheek trickster, a homicidal jester with one-liners to soften the blow of his razor fingernails. Not long after the hugely popular fourth entry, Freddy became a Halloween costume staple and spawned his own TV series, a 1-900 number, comic books, a rap tribute from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and an item I actually owned: a Krueger Christmas ornament.
Craven returned to the series ten years after its inception with the brilliant Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, a thoughtful, ahead-of-itstime, movie-within-a-movie that opened the same day as Pulp Fiction and quickly disappeared. Since then, other than the underwhelming Freddy Vs. Jason, it seemed the character had gone into retirement. Until now. This Michael Bay-produced remake could please die-hard fans, with its many in-jokes, a few good scares and a respectable, promising start. The set-up is the same: teens living on Elm Street are having shared nightmares and suddenly dying in their sleep. Krueger’s origin is presented, the carnage commences. Even in the more cheesy sequels, this series towered over the tacky, uninspired Friday the 13th, Halloween and Child’s Play franchises. It provided a showcase for great directors like Craven and Renny Harlin and launched actors like Johnny Depp, Patricia Arquette and Englund, who’s stillunsettling Krueger is one of the greatest movie monsters in film history.
I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that loco moco right before bed.
An especially ugly aspect of Krueger was the knowledge that, in addition to being a child murderer, he was also a pedophile, which the original series discreetly implied but the new movie puts front and center. This genre has a reputation for pushing the envelope, but the film’s almost fetishistic emphasis on child molestation crosses the line. Replacing Englund is Jackie Earl Haley, who simply isn’t scary: his make-up makes him look like a hairless Siamese cat and his voice is the same redneck growl that Billy Bob Thornton used in Sling Blade. The scenes that recreate classic moments from the original are duds; only the brooding original score gets a solid update. In 1984, scenes of young teens downing coffee and anti-sleeping pills to stay awake
were jolting; today, overly medicated teens can be found lining up at any Starbucks, making the tragic plight of the victims now a common part of high school life. It doesn’t help that none of the teens onscreen have much personality and feel like interchangeable parts from countless other slasher flicks. The film peaks early, during the opening diner scene, but, where the original was suspenseful, edgy and even funny throughout, this remake-of-the-week is predictable, humorless, heavy-handed and ugly in a way the filmmakers may not have intended. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film46

Sweet. Sugary. Spring. Seabury Hall’s Annual Craft Fair is nestled into the coziest spot on the calendar, the time of year when teachers are assigning movies and coloring activities to 17-year-olds because the sunny days are just too enticing. One of my favorite spots at this springtime bonanza is La Patisserie, where french goodies are served to the tune of lilting classical music. The fairstyle games are always good for a few laughs and lots of prizes; unlike at the County Fair, these games are actually winnable, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be headed home with a mammoth-sized teddy bear. The slip-n-slide swooping down the hill is also an enjoyable diversion. (It’s admittedly not as exciting as the time(s) some bored seniors rolled down the hill in a trashcan, but it is a good bit safer.) The craft fair and art displays boast beautiful, accessible works that make for ideal Mother's Day gifts. And don’t forget to stop by the flower and garden sale, as well as the massive rummage sale. Students and other performers will occupy the stage during the day, providing endless entertainment. To register a craft or food booth, visit seaburyhall.org/craftfair. This event supports a scholarship fund for deserving students who otherwise wouldn't have the chance to attend this, shall we say, not inexpensive school. 572-7235 [Sierra Brown]
“People worry about me living alone, but I’m very happy. I don’t need anyone to take care of me. Just drop food off,” 101-year-old Florence Hasegawa cheerfully announced yesterday via her Twitter account, @ GrandmaFlorence. After reading through her recent tweets—all honest, upbeat and interesting—I feel inclined to drop off some food myself. But I also get the feeling she already has a lot of loved ones doing exactly that. Florence is the inspiration for daughter Pat Masumoto’s My Mama Monologues, which will be showing at the MACC this Mother’s Day weekend; Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2 pm. The production is a theatrical reading of true stories entered by people of all ages from both Maui and afar. Kathy “Tita” Collins and audience volunteers will also read Grandma Florence’s tweets and replies. For information on how to submit a story, visit mymamamonlogues.com. There will be a repeat production next year, so you could always get a good head-start on perfecting your tale. 242-7469 [SB]

Pay homage to the big bluegreen matriarch we all share at the Mother Earth Day Festival (tag line: “Live Consciously, Consume Sustainably.) Keys of Creation, Erin Smith, Jamallad, Mountain and Isa Inca Hansen will serenade attendees during the daylight hours, while DJs Del Sol and Elf will spin into the night. The visuals should also be captivating: performances will feature silk aerialists, bellydancing and poi spinning. When you need a break from skanking, freeform spinning or wutanging along to these fun local bands, head over to the healing room for massages, reiki, aromatherapy and reflexology. Bountiful food booths will keep energy high, and the silent auction will feature an array of products and services. Just like at any good festival, there will also be keiki activities and room to run around. This is the annual festival's seventh go-round; not as impressive a life span as the planet it celebrates, but still respectable. 575-9390, thestudiomaui.com [SB]
Is she your best friend, biggest fan, psychologist, stockholder, cook, maid or prison warden? I’ll bet she’s some combination of the above, and whether she microwaves frozen burritos or designs four-course meals, continually warns you that your boyfriend is a closet flamer or shamelessly comes on to him, it all boils down to a simple fact: she’s your mom. And she loves you. Which is not easy to do. So appreciate one of the few people in the world who would do anything to make your life a little better, and take care of her for a change. Maui’s Hotel Zone is a pampering paradise; make reservations at the Hyatt Regency Maui Swan Court for a champagne brunch ($29-$39), then give her an organic body treatment at Spa Moana for $99. Or take her to Kaanapali Beach Hotel for a buffet brunch, champage, music and hula dancing–including an appearance by Melveen Leed– for $47, half-price for children. Or, if you aren’t morning people, take her out that evening to Leilani’s on the Beach, where Mom eats free with the purchase of two entrees. Also, on the eve of Mother’s Day, Leed will perform again, this time for free, at the Tiki Courtyard at Kaanapali Beach hotel from 6-9pm in honor of Island mothers. Most importantly, tell your mom what I plan on telling mine: “Happy Mother's Day, Mom, I love you. (Don’t worry, you can go back to being ungrateful and bitter on Monday.) [SB]

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Once you’ve seen or heard something, it’s impossible to unsee or unhear it. It’s in your mind forever. This week you may prefer to work diligently to maintain your blissful ignorance, since knowledge would not change anything for the better, and would make the inside of your head a much less pleasant place to hang out. The stuff you’d learn is truly none of your business, anyway, and you’d be pretty unhappy if someone else went prying into your skeleton closet. Therefore be careful about which doors you knock on, and where you go snooping. You may learn something you wish you never knew.
SIGN
AGE LANGU
Quizunderstood answers 1. Hawaii Attorney General Mark Bennett; Director of Finance Georgina Kawamura 2. The Cosby Show; Smitty 3. Rickey Henderson
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) We all get older. As you age, you’ll hopefully also gain an increasingly greater appreciation for those who’ve preceded you through these years. It’s harder (although not impossible) to appreciate older people when you’re in the blush of youth, but as the years contract, I hope you develop such an admiration, and learn to express it. Being able to identify with and step into the shoes of people much older than yourself is an important rite of passage—one that many Geminis make rather late in life. This week, take note of how quickly time actually passes, and remember that all too soon you won’t have to pretend—you will be in their shoes.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Don’t take on guilt for something that wasn’t your fault or responsibility, even if someone insists that you do so. Their idiotically misplaced blame should not be your cross to bear, so have the presence of mind and self-confidence to shrug it off. Stay frosty; don’t let yourself get upset, but go ahead and shut them down while you’re at it. It’s already pretty tacky to go around pointing fingers and tattling on people, but when the accusers are blatantly wrong, it’s unconscionable. They need to mind their own business and keep their preposterous suspicions to themselves—and if you don’t tell them to do it, who will?
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Although being absolutely and genuinely you is one of your great strengths, it can also hold you back, as you know. Especially in relationships, which thrive on compromise and sometimes semi-feigned interest in the other’s passions, you need to bend a little and act (as in what actors do). This doesn’t mean you need be truly facetious or lie to someone’s face. If it helps, access the deeper truth that you care about this person, and even though that caring doesn’t actually generate an interest in their stamp collection, you wish it would—so you pretend.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Don’t shoot yourself in the foot. You’re in a position to give yourself a serious advantage over the competition—why would you forego that? It’s not cheating to make use of all your strengths and talents; that’s called playing to win. What you’re considering is like taking one of the aces out of your hand in a card game and continuing the game without it. While I understand that you’re occasionally embarrassed about how fantastic and capable you are, sabotaging yourself is still a pretty dumb thing to do. Play hard or go home. Anything in between is just a waste of everyone’s time.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Being determined to win the lottery will not make it so. While force of will can accomplish a lot, if wishing yourself into a lucky break like that worked, most of us would be fabulously wealthy. While positive thinking can certainly influence situations in your favor, it will in most cases not yield a winning lottery ticket. That’s not to suggest you should resign yourself to being pessimistic and cynical. Be positive but realistic. Optimism can accomplish amazing things, but only if you’re not too busy being disappointed that it didn’t win you the lottery.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Doing what you were specifically warned or asked not to do has been, more or less, your specialty for many years. However, you can’t pretend that you’ve always been happy with the results. Sometimes boundaries and requests are better off respected and heeded. This, my dear, is one of those times. Back off. This explicit request is one that’s best for you to acknowledge and honor, even though the temptation to cross that line must surely be a powerful one. However, part of your journey is knowing when to rebelliously ignore rules and boundaries, and when to let them stand. This week, show us that you’re finally grasping that concept.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) There’s something about getting naked in the snow or polar bear swimming that really gets people’s inner fire going. While the mere thought of it makes me want to run to the nearest sauna, I can appreciate the need to sometimes jumpstart a process with a kind of shock to the system—something to wake you up. That is precisely what you need this week: something that will powerfully awaken you to what’s going on and enable you to react to it appropriately. Be warned—such awakenings are often unpleasant; however, once woken up, people rarely demand that they be allowed to go back to sleep.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Organic architecture is a design philosophy that promotes harmony between structures and the natural world where they’re built—the best of these should add to the beauty and balance of a place, not detract from it. While there’s no need for you live in a hobbit house inside a hill, there are ways for you to adopt this approach in your day to day life and the fruition of your goals. Does what you’re creating add to the situation in a way that generates more overall happiness, sustainability, and harmony? If not, it should. It may be time to rethink your methods and intentions.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Life is complicated, and sometimes you get to a point where you can no longer put off an unpleasant and undesirable act you must perform. This is something you can only avoid talking about, thinking about, or doing for so long, and now your grace time has undoubtedly run out. You may have denied the inevitability of what you must do until now, but dragging things on beyond this point would be senseless and perhaps even cruel. You don’t have to feel good about it—but you do have to do it. Don’t put it off another week, or even another day.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Don’t be so dramatic. While you’re eager to make a clean break in one part of your life and move on, there’s no need to set the house on fire and burn everything in it as you walk away. Take a vacation from it, instead; I suspect that you’ll see that, after a bit of time, you’ll be able to come back and view things completely differently, perhaps only discarding a box or two instead of reducing the whole thing to charred ash and rubble. This week, if you feel prone to making an overly dramatic gesture, restrain yourself. Walk away until you feel frosty enough to act modestly and rationally.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I know what you want to get out of this situation—that’s all too clear. What’s not obvious is what you could bring to it. Ask yourself why anyone would pick you, and if your only answer is your powerful desire, you need to look long and hard inside and at the way you’re presenting yourself to the world. Selling yourself may be a bit awkward at first—but sometimes it’s absolutely necessary. In fact, there’s no skill or talent that will serve you better this week. Remember, though—while enthusiasm is charming, subtlety will ultimately serve you better.
