The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL Based solely on its title, the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act, aka HR4213, would rank just below the Flowers are Pretty and Sunshine is Nice Proclamation on the no-brainer scale. But, as we've learned, you can't judge an act by its title (unless your idea of patriotism involves warrantless wiretapping). OK, what's the point of all this and how the hell does it fall under “hyper local”? HR4213, introduced this week by Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan and Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, features, way down in section “E” under “Agriculture Disaster Relief,” a $21 million allotment for “a Hawaiian sugar cane cooperative.” HC&S is never named, but since it's the only sugar operation left standing in the state it isn't hard to connect the dots. Some—including HC&S's employees and its profitable parent company, Alexander & Baldwin—will surely greet this news with smiles. But for anyone who decries profligate government spending and likes to point the finger at social programs, this is a nice reminder that corporate welfare is alive and kicking. Also worth noting: in April, quoted in The Maui News, Hawaii Sen. Dan Inouye pledged that “HC&S will not go under,” adding, “If I am wrong, I will be out of a job.” HR4213 doesn't bear Inouye's name, but it sure seems to bear his fingerprints....

LOCAL Earlier this week, KITV reports, Gov. Lingle met with opponents of civil union bill HB444, including Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona and the Hawaii Christian Coalition. She's also slated to meet with supporters of the bill. This could mean a decision is imminent—but there's another

you that?) Amidst the predictable partisan shots and fist-pumping, Djou—who must start fundraising and campaigning again almost immediately to defend the seat in November—did say one prescient thing, in his remarks to supporters: “If anything, what the people of Hawaii have given us is a short-term lease with an option to buy.”... Best Djou headline, courtesy of the conservative blog scaredmonkeys.com: “Djou Betcha.”...

possibility. According to an official release, Lingle will embark on a trip to China and Japan on June 4 and won't return until June 19, two days before the deadline for stating her intentions regarding HB444 and any other bills she hasn't signed or vetoed. Joining Lingle on her journey to the East will be an array of officials, including House Speaker Calvin Say and Hawaii Tourism Authority CEO Mike McCartney. Notably absent from the list is Aiona, who'll be acting governor. Are you following along? That means Aiona could veto HB444 in Lingle's stead, a move that would: a) play well with his religious base, on which he's counting heavily in the coming gubernatorial election; and b)

NOT LOCAL President Obama is deploying 1,500 National Guard troops to the U.S.Mexico border according to a CNN report, but if you ask Sen. John McCain it's “simply not enough.” He wants 3,000

The bill doesn't mention HC&S by name, but it isn't hard to connect the dots. let Lingle, who has been strangely tightlipped and non-committal on the issue, off the hook. Maybe it won't go down that way. Maybe Lingle will have made her decision by the time you read this and it'll be a moot point. Then again, maybe not.... The confetti had hardly settled at Charles Djou's victory party when the independent-candidate-who-doesn'tanswer-to-anyone-but-the-people-ofHawaii-and-decries-outside-intrusioninto-local-politics appeared on FOX News. “Back in January...I was polling in the teens,” he told the crew of FOX and Friends. “Everybody told me that this congressional seat was purchased and the wholly-owned property of the Democratic Party.” (Really, Charles? “Everybody” told

troops on the Arizona-Mexico border alone. That'd be the same John McCain who supported the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and said he wanted to continue—and possibly escalate—both during the 2008 presidential campaign. At the time, more than 15,000 National Guard troops were in those two countries according to official Defense Department figures, meaning they weren't available to lend a hand in McCain's home state or anywhere else. Guess we can add McCain to the list of people who are glad he didn't win. ■

Melissa Garren, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego (via mauitime.com) What is wrong with those we voted in to run things for us and supposedly protect us and our precious environment? Do none of the elected officials swim, snorkel, surf or dive? After being away from Hawaii for a number of years, I returned to dying coral reefs, few reef fish and now unsafe and polluted coastal waters. With all the money available

to keep building or expanding touristloving resorts surely there is money to find innovative ways to deal with our antibioticfilled human waste and nitrogen-containing runoff without injecting it into the sea. If there is even a slight question as to the safety of these injection wells, come on, find another way. The clock is ticking and no one really knows what the long-term effect of injection well usage is. I thought gambling was illegal in this state.

Re the May 20 film critique “Royal Insult”: I strongly believe you failed to recognize the kaona (deeper meaning) of the movie. I don't know if you realize, but Hawaiian soverignty is quite a case of lament today as it was back before the overthrow. As a Hawaiian I don't want to hear or see saddness about our soverignty anymore. I felt Princess Ka'iulani was more on the romantic end because it inspires us to use love to make a change. To me the movie is a classic and the real insult comes from the title of your article. Justin Kanakaole (via e-mail) I want to thank you for putting into painfully accurate words many of the emotions that this fiasco of a film elicits. Aue no ho'i e... the suffering the filmmakers put so many

of us through as we tried to steer them in the right direction...all his lip service about understanding the subject...falsehoods all. (Apparently they now want to give the same treatment to Evangelina Cisneros, the Cuban heroine some 19th century press compared Ka'iulani—however inaccurately—to.) As soon as I learned the director, Marc Forby, was a career horror-film producer, I knew that disaster was in the works. And your mention of the $5 DVD bins is like a sock in the gut: I only just saw Forby's precursor to The Film That Shall Remain Nameless (I can't stand using Ke Ali'i Ka'iulani's name to refer to it), Prom Night, in just such a bin.Yes, we'll be digging out from this infuriating haolewood damage for years...but the important thing is to dig out. It is time a culturally rich, entirely pono documentary is made about Ka'iulani's life; something steeped in the spirituality that was an entirely closed book to Forby; something filled with the poetry, subtlety and 'uhane of the Timeless Now that truly is Ka'iulani's story. We can do it, all of us, kanaka maoli and kanaka maoli supporters together. Me ke aloha pumehana.

Mindi Reid (via e-mail) MEETS

Re the May 20 feature “Injecting Controversy”: I would like to know who the unnamed UH staff member is that is willing to assure the County that staph cannot survive in seawater. As a marine microbiologist, I am confident that it can and does survive well in seawater, and there is a large body of peer-reviewed primary scientific literature that supports this. Even a simple Google Scholar search for “staph survival in seawater” brings up many pages of peer-reviewed studies that all find staph survives in seawater. One such example can be found in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health (July 2008; vol. 211: pages 398-402) in a study by Tolba, Loughrey, Goldsmith, Millar, Rooney and Moore. The title is “Survival of epidemic strains of healthcare (HA-MRSA) and community-associated (CA-MRSA) meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in river-, sea- and swimming pool water.” Excerpts from their abstract include: “The aim of this study was to examine the survival dynamics of several epidemic healthcare (HA) and community-associated (CA) meticillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in river, sea and swimming pool waters.... Two strains of each type were examined resulting in a total of 14 organisms being examined... An inoculum of each MRSA isolate was added individually to each water microcosm.... This study demonstrates that all 14 epidemic HA and CA MRSA studied can survive in sea and river water environments up to at least 14 days post inoculation. There was no significant differences in the survival dynamics between CA-MRSA and HA-MRSA in any water environment... This study indicates that contaminated sea and river water may serve as potential reservoirs of HA- and CA-MRSA, if such water sources become contaminated with these organisms.” Transparency and correct information are necessary on the part of the County. Publicizing blatantly incorrect information isn't helping anyone solve anything and is an embarrassment to the County. It is the County's responsibility to protect the public; pretending the problem doesn't exist and lying to support that claim is unacceptable. It's definitely time to clean up the water.

Re the May 20 Coconut Wireless: I also hail from the Bay Area and am a big Giants fan. I was very interested to read your explanation about the lack of coverage; my friends are sick of hearing about it from me. Dodgers and Angels are on TV, though, all the damn time. ESPN is dead to me now with their complete East Coast bias. Hopefully I can fly back for a series this season. Nice job and go Giants! Chris Moore (via e-mail) Ed. Note: Glad to hear I'm not the only one, Chris. The Angels and Dodgers games are on because Oceanic Time Warner carries the Los Angeles Fox Sports Net feed. But both teams are blacked out on MLB Extra Innings and the At Bat app, compounding the insanity. After last week's issue went to press, I did hear back from the Giants' PR rep, who requested my questions in writing. I'll keep you (and anyone else who cares) posted. The local government of Bolton, England, responding in March to a citizen's report of a discarded mattress on the side of a road, sent an official to assess the scene. He wrote a work order for four men (a driver, an assistant and two supervisors) and a 1.7-ton construction vehicle, and the pickup was scheduled for the following week, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph. (When a Bolton councilman saw the schedule, he, with the help of a friend, drove a council van to the scene and hauled the mattress to a dump site.)

(1) Susan Collis' conceptual art, “Since I Fell for You, debuted at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, England, in May, consisting of an empty room with pieces of lumber on the floor, along with a broom propped against a wall and an empty laundry bag. Though the Birmingham Mail quoted several annoyed visitors, Collis defended her work. “Often a work that looks very careless ... takes a long time to produce. (2) Just finishing up in May at New York City's Museum of Modern Art is a tribute to performance artist Marina Abramovic for her lifetime achievements in making patrons uneasy. Videos played, including one in which the artist screams at the top of her lungs until such time as she loses her voice, and visitors faced unsettling live demonstrations, including being asked to enter a room by squeezing between a naked man and woman facing each other in the doorway. The artist herself planned to attend the entire run sitting at a table in the museum's atrium, silent and motionless, all day long, during which time patrons could stare back at her.

This goes out to the jackasses I saw hunting deer with a bow out of a black pickup in Makena. Not only did you maliciously kill the deer, but you left it to rot on the side of the road. Inhumane jerks...your time will come! Talk about lack of pono. â–

Mary Merten, 43, pleaded guilty in March to four felonies in connection with an eightyear-long spree in which, as bookkeeper for a two-lawyer firm in Kingston, New York, she stole over $800,000 via embezzlement and theft of the lawyers' identities. However, as she awaited sentencing, she wrote her former bosses: “I would ask that you consider keeping me employed...I truly enjoy my job and want to continue to work for the both of you to make up for my imperfections. (At press time, she was still awaiting sentencing.)

Land ho! Somee fun fun stuff to do when you're nott in the water The ocean is to Maui as the sky is to a cloud—it surrounds us, supports us, defines us. We play in it, paddle on it, draw food from it and explore its depths. Because of this all-consuming relationship, it's easy to forget that the land, the 'aina, has a lot to offer as well. Sustenance and beauty, sure, but also a wide array of activities to fill the long, lazy summer months. In the following pages we present some options; it's not meant to be an exhaustive list by any means, just a sampling to whet your appetite for land-lubbing fun (augmented, as usual, by extensive listings for camps, classes and other keiki-onvacation diversions). LET 'ER ZIP Flying above the forest— and learning about it, too Words by Sabrina Dreyer Photos by Sean Michael Hower

That's all well and good, but, thrillseekers want to know, what's the experience like? It starts with a greeting from some expressive—and impressively perky, given how early our tour started—guides. A brisk half-mile hike through lush Haleakala vegetation gets the blood pumping, and then its time to zipline. First, you're strapped into a harness that Skyline says “boasts more mechanical redundancy than any other zipline harness in use today” and is “statistically...over four times safer than all 'paragliding style' zipline

once again, the guides quickly put everyone at ease and soon enough we were taking turns sailing above the expansive greenery and towering eucalyptus trees (lovely, but a harmful invasive species, by the way). The last line features a platform big enough to get a running start; this is the jump where you really get the sensation of flying. My only complaint? I wish it could have lasted longer.

Skyline's success is a testament both to the company's laudable enviro ethic and man's never-ending yearning to soar, unencumbered, through the air.

We first covered this popular activity in the Summer Guide a couple years ago. But this year, we decided to seek out another company, one that offers not just aerial thrills but also an environmentally conscious experience. In its mission

The trail to the fourth line includes a swinging bridge—adding to the element of excitement—and the drop is exhilarating. But nothing like the final line. That's the Big Kahuna, large enough to give the more timid members of our tour pause. But,

bike are well-matched and thus ensuring an enjoyable ride. Talk about speed dating. But wherever I went, the experts stressed safety, meaning obeying traffic laws, as well as taking precautions like wearing a helmet. I could go on forever about the merits of bicycling. It’s gaining popularity and you can buy, rent or repair your wheels at several locations islandwide (see sidebar). Not only is it eco-friendly and a solid work-out, you can enjoy Maui’s beautiful scenery and get a tan without getting sand in your nether regions. So whichever of Delerm’s categories you fit into, this summer, put your feet to the pedals and go. ■

up the ante, plotting a course from Waihee Elementary to Camp Maluhia. On the way, I saw beautiful coastlines and verdant hills—and my heart rate shot up. In fact, I’m surprised it didn’t burst out of my chest after the umpteenth incline. Planning a trip is easy if you grab a copy the Maui County Bicycle Map, sold in most bicycle shops. It covers roads on the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai and indicates which are most suitable and least suitable for bicycling. The map also lets you know

the average climate of different regions as well as the direction and strength of trade winds. That way, if you’re a cycler deciding to go from Kahului to Lahaina via the pali, you’re gonna know that’s 23 miles on very bike-friendly roads, in a hot, dry area. Translation: Bring lots of water and slather on the sunscreen (though that’s good advice whever you go: this is Maui in the summer we’re talking about). Or maybe you’re a Wailuku bicycler looking to pick up some grinds from the Paia Fish Market. That’s 10 miles on fairly friendly roads traveling against the wind, in a high-wind area. Translation: hard work. Before Donnie of Go Cycling Maui in Paia corrected me, I thought there were two types of bikes: road and off-road. But these days, more and more people are using hybrid bikes, or bikes that are designed for both road and off-road use, a definite plus since Maui is a melting pot of terrain as well as people. Bob of Island Biker in Kahului offers bike-fitting, making sure a rider and

There are home and bed-and-breakfast rentals or you can even stay at Hotel Hana Maui, but camping offers a uniquely rich experience. In the Kipahulu Park area you can obtain permits from the ranger on the same day; this is a National Park, in the federal system. This park sits right next to Oheo gulch with lots of waterfalls, fresh water pools and trail hikes. Wainapanapa State Park is another great camping area where you can get permits for tent camping, but can also rent cabins. Permits can be obtained at the State Department of Land and Natural Resouces office at the state building in Wailuku. Tent camping is an experience that everyone should have, but expect to get wet and rained on. A good alternative is getting a cabin; it's still rustic enough to be considered roughing it, but a way to stay dry and cozy. Word to the wise: the cabins are popular, meaning you should give yourself at least a two-month window if you're flexible with the time and up to a year if you're looking for a very specific date. Holiday weekends are always busier.Your permit will cost you per person and you can » Continued on page 15

The prices recently increased as of March 2010, so if you've rented them before expect to pay a bit more, though it's still considerably less than other accomodations (starting at $60 a night for residents, $90 for non-residents). The Wainapanapa cabins are modest but fully functional and outfitted with some amenities. All cabins feature a lanai with a picnic table, a kitchen with sink, fridge and two-burner hot plate. The bathrooms have a hot-water shower, plus sink and flush toilet. The cabins are outfitted with pots, plates, mugs

and cutlery, but don't expect to find everything you need; if you're planning to cook a very specific meal, you may need to bring some of your own items. They do have old fire pits outside for grilling, which are usable but tricky. Better to bring your own grill if possible. The cabins were renovated in the last year but not much has changed. During my recent stay I noticed repaired vinyl tiles, new plasticcovered mattresses (sheets are not provided so bring your own) and the four-burner cooktops were replace by the hot plates. The hot plates don't put out as much heat as the cooktops do; it took a while to cook

pancakes on high heat, so we vowed to bring waffle irons next year. Cabins one through seven have ocean-front views; the coast line is rocky and comprised of sharp lava, good for fishing. The area around the cabins is hilly. Cabins seven through 12 are perched up on the hill behind the first seven cabins, where you'll find more grass, good for lawn games like bocci ball. The views from all the cabins are absolutely gorgeous. The access to the nearby caves formed by lava tubes is walking distance (see following story for details) and you can swim in freshwater

pools or go down to the beach. The park is very kid friendly, as are the cabins. Meanwhile, botanical gardens and waterfalls, the harbor, Hana Bay and Hana town are all about ten minutes away. So what are you waiting for? ■

The trail descends through a dense thicket before curving past the first set of caves, fronted by shallow, stagnant water filled with bugs and sticks and not suitable for anything more than a quick wade-in. It's a fine place to stop and cool your feet, but the real prize comes a bit further along, when you reach the cave where the unlucky princess met her fate. Here the water—which can be entered either by a short jump or by picking your way down some slippery rocks—is deeper and crystal clear, cool enough to be refreshing but not cold enough to prevent you from swimming around.

Words by Jacob Shafer

F

ew things bring out your inner 12-year-old like the phrase “underwater caves.” So it was with giddiness and a dash of adolescent abandon that I embarked on the Wainapanapa cave trail loop. Of course, I'm not 12 anymore and I've got two kids to prove it. Fortunately, though the hike promises exciting sights, it's short—a mile if that—and despite a few slippery stretches is easily navigable even while giving a shoulder ride to a squirming toddler.

Two of the caves are pitch black and one of them, a lava tube, winds deep into the rock. A paved path hugs the water's edge and passes a blow hole and black-sand beach. It ends at an informational sign that outlines the legend of the caves: “Once upon a time a princess named Popoalaea fled from her cruel husband, the chief Kakae. She hid on a ledge just inside the underwater entrance to this cave. A faithful serving maid sat across from her fanning the princess with a feather, kahili, symbol of royalty. Noticing the reflection of the kahili in the water, the chief Kakae discovered Popoalaea's hiding place and killed her. At certain times of the year tiny red shrimp appear in the pool, turning the water red. Some say it is a reminder of the blood of the slain princess.”

That's a good thing, because there are three caves to explore. Two of them are pitch black and one, a lava tube, winds deep into the rock. This is where a waterproof flashlight or head-lamp would have been handy. Without one, I wasn't able to swim more than a few feet in (OK, I was also a little bit chicken). The third cave, meanwhile, is shallow and wide and, though the light is dim, you can clearly see the multi-colored, jagged rocks above and Popoalaea's ledge (for full effect, picture a feather's reflection). After that it's a short walk back to where you started, a second chance to read about the legend if you're one of those people who tend to skip informational signs. The whole thing can be done in less than an hour, depending on how long you hang out at the caves. While some of East Maui's most rewarding sights involve arduous, even treacherous treks, this is a hike for everyone—my inner 12-year-old decidedly included. ■

Grill Crazy Where to get your meat (and meat alternatives)

T

he minute the winter chill subsides, the Mainland declares it “grilling time. Luckily, on Maui we can celebrate our ability to grill year round. In my Wailuku neighborhood we grill even in the rainy months, in our carports and under outdoor canopies. Our small local food markets make it easy to throw your favorite meats on, and the butchers make their own marinades. When you pick up your pau hana six pack you can grab a container of already marinated-toperfection kalbi ribs, Korean chicken or teriyaki beef. Takamiya Market in Wailuku makes an awesome sweet kalbi; pick from the quantities on hand or call their butcher in the morning to special-order your quantity. They also have premade mac salad and other local food favorites. You'll find the same at Pukalani Superette, but I honed in on their made-on-Maui hot dogs, produced at Uncle Louie Sausage Co. TJ's Warehouse's teriyaki beef has a perfect balance of sweet, gingery and garlicly spices, their yakiniku chicken is made with boneless thighs, plus they have a Japanese goods emporium to add the right touch to your meal. Careful with the thinly sliced teriyaki beef, it's easy to overcook, and don't try to pan fry it without patting it dry or you'll have a steamed piece of meat instead of a caramelized one. Yes, grilling tends to be meat-centric, but vegetarians don't have to sit on the sidelines. I recently made slider pupus from Wild Wood organics sproutofu veggie burgers with shiitake, found at Mana Foods. These little brown nuggets are firm enough to flop on the grill and the shiitake mushrooms take to smoky flavors. Embellish with your

Lamb and beef skewers from Whole Foods Market.

favorite aioli, veggies and a bun. If you're in Kihei, Hawaiian Moons has lots of great soy products that are grill-ready, plus prepackaged ready-for-picnicking desserts and salads. Try the tempeh, a fermented soy product that's firm and nutty; skewer it with veggies, add salt and pepper and char. It won't crisp on the outside, but it makes a tasty tofu alternative. At Whole Foods Market in Kahului, the meat department has a few ready-togrill-meats. I got their lamb skewers made with rosemary and mint and the beef satay skewers. They also have dry-rubbed racks of ribs, steaks and seasoned short ribs. The skewers are fancy, and you can add them to an easy dinner of salad and pasta. They take about four to eight minutes on the grill.

CANOES

If you want something from the sea, the local fish markets have an abundant variety, and the counter people can tell you how to prepare your cut of fish for the grill. Some are firm enough to throw straight on, others may need shelter in foil. Fresh Island Fish in Kahului, the Fish Market in Honokowai and Eskimo Candy in Kihei all have excellent selections. Happy grilling! â–

Film Critique

by Barry Wurst II barry@mauitime.com

Better Than ‘Sex’ Sinfully silly sequel manages to out-fab the original Sex and the City 2

★★★★★

Rated R/146 min.

T

wo years ago, I appeared for the first time on “The Ed and Greg Show” on Wild 105.5 (“Hawaii’s Party Station!”) and spoke with the morning crew about summer movies. The first question I got was from a co-anchor who wanted to address the three-star review I gave the first Sex and the City movie. Just moments after meeting him for the first time, he asked me, live on the air, if I had a vagina. His classy question caught me off guard, but I guess he had a point: I’m not the target audience for this movie. Yet I enjoyed the TV series and thought the spinoff film was better and smarter than expected. When I heard a sequel was in the works I had my doubts; as with many follow-ups, it sounded like a dubious, unnecessary cash grab. From the first scene, this is neither a repeat of the first film nor an over-extended

Best night at Sansei ever.

episode from the series. Instead, we’re reunited with the now-married author Carrie Prescott (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her best friends (played with giggly gusto by Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrell and Cynthia Nixon) at a spectacular gay wedding. Within 10 minutes, the movie declares its lavish, campy intentions as Liza Minelli—backed by look-alike dancers—belts out Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies.” The guys in the audience may squirm at the estrogen-fueled opening, but they'll be rewarded with a hilarious running gag involving Davis’s ridiculously curvy nanny and the hypnotic

effect her bra-less outfits have on men. The story takes the four leads on a business trip to Morocco and gives the audience something refreshingly different in terms of locale and story. Yes, the gals are still working out relationship problems and extramarital temptations, but we get a travelogue of Abu Dhabi, a glimpse of a different culture and an approach that even long-time fans of the TV series will find surprising. I love sequels like this: rather than rehash the first installment, it goes in a fresh new direction. Parker, looking beautiful but overly bronzed, still has crack comic timing, while Davis is as

adorable as ever and Nixon is still a spitfire. But the movie belongs to Cattrall, who goes for broke and manages to make sex-crazed Samantha both humorously vulnerable and positively noble. There are also some amusing celebrity cameos, though the movie misses an opportunity by bringing the exceptional Penelope Cruz in for just one scene. The pace is fast and the whole thing is so much fun, the 146-minute running time flies by. On the down side, a lot of plot threads are left dangling. Most inexcusably, the filmmakers bring back Smith, the reformed lothario played by Jason Lewis whose relationship with Samantha was a series highlight, but drop him after he enters the story. Only near the end, after a couple of mixups and demonstrations of bad behavior by American tourists, does it get overly silly. The first film had more heart, but here’s a sequel that is funnier, maybe even better than the original. And no, I don’t have a vagina. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film49

New This Week PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME - PG13 - Fantasy, Action - Films based on video games don’t exactly have a sterling track record, but this should at least please FX-obsessed teens and anyone interested in ogling a bronzed, beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal. 116 min. ROBIN HOOD - PG13 - Action, Adventure - Yet another take on the legendary outlaw, this time with Russell Crowe in the title role. Safe to assume it’ll have all the joy and historical accuracy of Gladiator. 140 min.

WHARF CINEMA CENTER 658 Front Street, 249-2222 (Matinees: Tue all shows, until 6pm every other day)

SHREK FOREVER AFTER (3D) - PG - Family, Animated - The final chapter in the Shrek saga finds our big green hero in an alternate universe where, presumably, wisecracking fairy-tale characters still make non-stop pop culture references. 93 min.

IRON MAN 2-PG13-THU (1:00, 4:00) 7:00, 10:00. FRI (1:00, 4:00) 7:00, 10:00. SAT-MON (1:00) 4:00, 7:00, 10:00. TUE-WED (1:00, 4:00) 7:00, 10:00. ROBIN HOOD-PG13-THU (1:15, 4:15) 7:15, 10:15. FRI (1:15, 4:15) 7:15, 10:15. SAT-MON (1:15) 4:15, 7:15, 10:15. TUE-WED (1:15, 4:15) 7:15, 10:15. SHREK FOREVER AFTER-PG-THU (1:30, 4:15) 6:45, 9:15. FRI (1:30, 4:15) 6:45, 9:15. SAT-MON (1:30) 4:15, 6:45, 9:15. TUE-WED (1:30, 4:15) 6:45, 9:15.

LETTERS TO JULIET - PG - Romance - Is this: a) A buddy cop movie; b) A torture porn grindhouse flick; or c) A rom com about an American girl in Italy? If you answered a or b, we have a question for you: what’s the rent like under rocks these days? 101 min. MACGRUBER - R - Comedy - Stretching SNL sketches into feature films can be hilarious (Wayne’s World) or disastrous (Superstar). This one-joke MacGyver spoof looks suspiciously like the latter. 105 min. OCEANS - G - Documentary - Disney goes under the sea in this latest visual dazzler. Wonder if they find Nemo? 100 min.

THE BACK-UP PLAN - PG13 - Comedy, Romance - Here’s the deal: J-Lo wants to be with you, but she’s got a little baggage: she’s pregnant with twins. Still game? 106 min.

Forget ABC’s Lost. Anyone else hooked on the History Channel’s new series Ancient Aliens? OK. I know it’s just another one of the network’s way weird, rather nonsensical shows—but I can’t help myself. Gimme gimme those crazy conspiracies! (Mostly, I like watching the hyper-bronzed enthusiasm of Giorgio Tsoukalos, who has freakier hair than I do, which is saying a lot.) Marrying the mysteriousness of our final frontiers, Aliens and related programs showcase enthusiasts who theorize USOs may be hiding in the unknown abysses of our deep-sea trenches. On the other hand, the Pacific Whale Foundation proves that capturing the intrigue of both sea and sky can be done in an entirely un-weird (and more fun) way. Join them tonight—and on each full moon—for a special take on their evening cruise offering. Under the added glow of nature’s natural satellite/spotlight, award-winning astronomer Harriet Witt narrates the night sky. In addition to your brain, the cruise aims to fill your opu, too. Chow includes an on-deck BBQ featuring Maui Cattle Co. beef, plus imbibe-ables like the foundation’s own “famous Mai Tais” and Maui Brew Co. beers. Speaking of which, throughout our winter whale season, the Brew Co.’s Brewpub has dedicated its “Pint Night” benefit to the PWF. May marks the last installment—and your last chance to “save the whales with ales.” PWF: pacificwhale.org, 249-8811/ Brewpub: 669-3474

Second only to 3 Ninjas Kick Back, my favorite flick of 1994 is True Lies. Kidding! I really do like True Lies. On Saturday, “True Lies star Tom Arnold and friends” take to the Maui Theatre stage as May’s feature artist in the Maui Celebrity Series. Though I must admit, I’m slightly confused by commercials touting Arnold just as “True Lies star.” What about Coneheads (1993)?! And, um, Soul Plane (2004)? Arnold’s autobiography is titled How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years. If that sounds like the story of your life (it’s mine), you’re sure to enjoy his stand-up. The “and friends” part mostly means creator/producer/crooner Brian Evans. “On behalf of the proud people of Hawaii,” Governor Linda Lingle recently issued Evans commendation for bringing celebrities to the island, saying it “is particularly meaningful during these difficult economic times.” Yep. You know you’re jealous... If the times aint got you down and your funny bones are restless, hit up the MACC tonight for even more live comedy. “Filipino funny man” Rex Navarrete will command the Castle Theater with his popular ethnicomic bit. I’ll bet you a Louis Vuitton bag that us Filipinos are likely to enjoy being laughed with instead of at (por a change). Navarrete: 242-7469, mauiarts.org / Arnold: mauicelebrityseries.com

Do you smoke cigars, lounge on $30,000 pianos, or slink around dark corners like the Pink Panther? OK, new question: Would you like to? Well, the logistics for that sort of thing are left up to you, but Grammy winner Lee Ritenour will certainly put you in the mood. Nicknamed “Captain Fingers,â€? Ritenour specializes in accessible jazz-fusion and contemporary crossover styles, making music that lends itself nicely to slow dancing and steamy, black-and-white foreign-film scenes. Radio patrons have probably heard his Top-15 hit, “Is It You?â€? Though this may be his most famous song, I’ll argue it isn’t his best. Ritenour’s brand of jazz is very complex and subtle. To fully appreciate his talent and impressive mastery of different styles, be sure to listen to tracks like “Rio Solâ€? and “Etude.â€? Better yet, see him live. Accompanying him are musicians Michael Paulo, a pop/jazz crossover saxophonist from Hawaii, and funky bassman, Melvin Lee Davis. Ritenour is touring the islands as part of the NÄ HĹ?kĹŤ Hanohano O Hawaii Music Festival, taking place May 27-30. A limited number of premium seats ($75) are available. Na Lei Na’auao—an alliance of 12 Hawaiian culture, community and environment-based charter schools—is supported by something with a bit more might than the roadside car wash. Backing this hui is yet another: the powerful, talented Mana Maoli Collective. With mana meaning “divine or miraculous power and maoli meaning “native, indigenous and true, the name suits this group of successful, inspirational musicians, all of whom have come together to form a non-profit band that plays great music for the fiscal benefit of Na Lei Na’auao. Recently returned from a tour of New Zealand, the star-studded group includes some of Hawaii’s biggest names. Names like George Kahumoku, Paula Fuga (pictured), Mike Love, Anuhea, Boom Gaspar of Pearl Jam, Shane Veincent of Sudden Rush, Kapali of Lahaina Grown, Moku and Kalei of 4Fathers, Kawai-Ho and CJ of Hi-Town. Together they play hip-hop, reggae, jazz, blues and everything in between. Join them in supporting Hawaii’s culture, keiki and environment, with a special Saturday show, chock-full of acoustic sets, hula and traditional Hawaiian music. Door benefits Na Lei Na’auao. 572-0220 [SB]

In an episode of Doctor Who, the doctor and his companions were presented with a choice between dream and reality. They were forced to confront their desires, which might otherwise compel them to remain in the dream they wanted to be reality. Sound familiar? Of course, both AGE situations before you exist in reality—nevertheless, one is still partially LANGU composed of fantasy. Which do you want? The half-imaginary scenario that may never become more real than it is right now, no matter how much you wish for it? Or the place where everything is exactly what it seems (and, yes, slightly less colorful than the one you half dreamed up)? I can’t choose for you—but this week you must choose nevertheless.

2. Ogden Newspapers Inc.; Ogden founded in 1890, Maui News

founded in 1900 3. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi 4. C.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Here we go again. You adore extremes like a fat kid loves cake. You’re like an Amish guy who decides to go from not allowing any photos to be taken to starring in gay porn. There’s a spectrum here, but you’re only looking at the two furthest points. You have more choices than that; it doesn’t have to be full-on or not at all. Try to find the middle path this week. All or nothing are terrible options, and neither one is particularly viable, or likely to make you happy. There’s a million shades of color between those two stark opposites. Notice that—once you do, finding one that suits you shouldn’t be all that difficult.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Not everyone will love you. Some people will actively dislike and disparage you. Of course, there’s always the youthful temptation to give as good as you get (and probably better), and sling back a few witty insults. This can be fun, and it’s okay if you occasionally indulge it. However, there are times when mucking around in the dirt is simply inappropriate. That’s when your marvelous grace and good manners (which are excellent when you choose to exercise them) will serve you well. This week is such a time. Stay frosty, no matter how low the blows go.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) The golden rule serves you well—until it doesn’t. What happens if treating someone else as you’d like to be treated in their shoes is quite the opposite of what they’d prefer? Tell a wife about her cheating husband and she may not be as grateful as you’d be in her place—perhaps you’ve just shattered a comforting illusion she preferred to a complicated reality. This week, you actually need to step outside yourself and use all your intuition to figure out how to best honor the platinum rule: Treat others in such a way as to create the greatest amount of happiness in their lives—even when that conflicts with the golden rule.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Blood family does not trump chosen family unless you decide it does. Wouldn’t you agree that someone’s adoptive father who raised them from infancy to adulthood has more of a claim to the “dad title than the guy who originally provided the sperm? The same goes for the people you’ve chosen in your life. They get to keep being in your life and those bonds can be just as strong and valuable as any of those dictated by genetics—as long as you deem it so. Don’t let the world’s rules be your rules, not when you have the absolute power (at least in this case) to make your own.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) The appropriate response when you learn your assumption was dead wrong is probably embarrassment and apology. However, that’s not always the easiest thing for you proud and stubborn Scorpios to muster on the spot. I’ve seen Scorps come up with some pretty insane cover stories to explain their gaffes. Of course, this usually just digs the hole a bit deeper, because it’s perfectly obvious to everyone what’s happened. Relax. It’s no big deal; we’re all human, and everyone has had moments like these. Own it. Have a good laugh. It might be difficult at first—but you’ll get better with practice.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) What’s your first response when your Internet connection seems a bit sluggish? Usually, you’ll want to reset the modem. Starting fresh isn’t always quite the same when you’re working with something more complex than a small home appliance, but it’s still possible to some extent. Sex life gotten a bit slow or stale? Conversation turning in circles? Career stagnated? You may need to unplug the pieces and try to start from scratch, being careful to head in a totally new direction (following the same path, of course, would force you to end up right back here). If you want to hit reset and start over, this week is the perfect time to try.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Go on. Get out on that limb. Stick your neck out. Nothing’s going to happen unless you put what you want out there. Yes, you may not get what you want, but at least you’ll know you’ve tried. Can you create an opening for the situation you desire, while being okay with whatever outcome results? I think you can. Let’s say for instance you wanted to hook up with someone. It’s perfectly viable to say, “Hey ___, I think you’re hot and would like to hook up. If you’re not into it, though, that’s cool—we can forget I ever asked. Then, of course, it’s up to you to walk the walk you just talked.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) They say that good things come to those who wait. False. Oh sure, it’s true some of the time—but most of the time, nothing comes to those who wait—it’s already gone to the people who stepped up and put themselves out there and strived for it. Patience can be a virtue, but it’s one I’d put aside for now, if I were you. You need to be hungry, impatient, and motivated. It’s time to push for what you want, persistently and stubbornly. Sitting on your hands will get you exactly nowhere and nothing—so don’t do it.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale. Enjoy a sale when it’s for something you purchase all the time, but otherwise this “opportunity is just a scam, and you’re falling for it. Of course, there are exceptions, but much of the time you end up with something you’d never have gone shopping for in the first place. It may be difficult to ignore the flashing “75% off signs, but you need to try. Attempt to clearly consider whether what’s on offer is really something you need in your life. The answer—despite the incredible “value—is probably no. Stick to that.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) If you’ve got your heart set on a particular version of reality, why are you settling for the one you’ve got? Is it because you’re lazy? Or is it perhaps that you’re not confident that you could actually manifest anything like what you’re fantasizing about, and so are unwilling to risk the so-so version you’ve got now? That’s foolish. What is life, if not risk? In this case, you should never settle—not when what you really want is perfectly achievable with a lot of hard work and just a bit of luck. Get to it, already.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Do what you need to do to motivate yourself, within reason. Obviously, promising yourself a massive banana split sundae if you go to the gym isn’t particularly helpful. But surely there’s something you can offer yourself that wouldn’t be quite so self-defeating—that might, in fact, be simultaneously a motivating treat as well as advancing your goals, however subtly or slightly. You’ve always worked better when you have a carrot to goad you on. Don’t deny yourself that reward. There’s a way to make a total win-win happen here—it’s up to you to simply choose wisely to make it so.
