The Week in Review HYPER LOCAL Dissenting opinions are awesome. Whether you agree with them or not, they’re usually brimming with vim, vigor and righteous indignation. For a prime example, see the state Water Commission’s decision in the Waihe’e River and Waiehu, Iao and Waikapu streams (aka Na Wai Eha waters) contested case, released June 10.
week—a Friday night matchup against the Tijuana Cimmarones—and I’m pleased to report: good fun. The stands were mostly full and, though it’s clear Mauians are still warming up to the team, there were plenty of enthusiastic cheers. It didn’t hurt that Na Koa put on a hitting clinic, plating eight runs in the second inning alone and going on to win 15-2. (As of this writing they’re 10-8, in second place
Lt. Gov Aiona’s been busy signing and vetoing a number of bills, but it doesn’t appear HB444 will be among them. The entire thing is worth a read (or at least a skim) if you care about this issue (and you should), but the juiciest bit is at the end, when Commissioner Lawrence Miike spells out his dissent. Miike accuses the Commission of “consistently choosing presumptions in favor of HC&S and to the detriment of stream restoration” and says that it has “failed in its duties...as trustee of the state’s public water resource.” Of course, impassioned words don’t restore stream flows, but environmental groups, including EarthJustice, have said they’ll appeal. In a statement, EarthJustice attorney Isaac Moriwake called the decision—which restores 12.5 million gallons a day, far less than the 34.5 million gallons recommended last year, and restores no water to the Iao and Waikapu streams—a “miscarriage of justice” and promised that “it will not stand.”... Caught my first Na Koa Ikaika game last
in the Golden Baseball League’s South Division and 5-1 at Maehara Stadium.) There are also, my wife and young sons were glad to discover, diversions for those who can’t sit through nine innings of baseball: burgers, dogs and other ballpark fare; free bounce castles for the keiki; and on-field promotions and gimmicks (my favorite was a father and son who took turns trying to whack a ball off a tee and over the right field fence; they came up woefully short but got a nice ovation nonetheless). Bottom line: this is a welcome addition to entertainmentstarved Central Maui, particularly for sports fans accustomed to rooting via television. timed journey to the East. However, it doesn’t appear HB444 will be among them. Aiona has made his feelings on the civil union bill abundantly clear and as acting Governor he can theoretically do what he pleases. But, despite pressure from his religious base, it looks like he’ll let the Governor follow through on her promise, spelled out in a June 2 AP story, to make a decision after she returns from Asia on June 19, two days before she has to tell the legislature which bills she plans to veto. Lingle has said generic stuff—she called HB444 “difficult” in the AP piece and said that her decision will “affect people on both sides” (gee, really?)—but hasn’t indicated which way she’s leaning. Considering she’s never been afraid to speak her mind and debate issues publicly (even dead ones; see Spin Cycle, page 6), this is, for lack of a better word, curious....

President Obama reaffirmed his ability to give convincing speeches when he delivered his first Oval Office address this week, about—what else—the BP oil spill. And he said the right words, promising to “make BP pay” and adding that “we can’t afford not to change how we produce and use energy.” There were even some concrete details, including a sixmonth moratorium on deep water drilling and the establishment of a commission “to understand the causes of this disaster and offer recommendations on what additional safety and environmental standards we need to put in place.” It’s a start; certainly we can’t expect the President to wave a magic wand. This issue, like the well at its center, goes deep. There’s oil on all of our hands. ■

SPIN CYCLE Rewriting history... “In his campaign for higher office, Mufi Hannemann is trying to rewrite history. His inaccurate comments regarding the Hawai‘i Superferry situation are both misinformed and patently false. It seems as if the Mayor was absent during the herculean efforts put forth by both the Legislature and my Administration to bring the Superferry to Hawai‘i.... The fact is that the decision to stop the Superferry was the result of a Supreme Court ruling which was a far-reaching interpretation that heretofore had never been applied to any new maritime operation in the state.”

Linda Lingle, in a May 28 statement; quoted previously in the Honolulu Advertiser, Hannemann said she “blew the Superferry” by not completing an Environmental Impact Statement “I[T]he legislation on behalf of Hawaii Superferry compromised the State’s environmental laws and set a worrisome precedent for future government accommodation that puts the interests of a single business before the State’s environmental, fiduciary, and public safety responsibilities.” - From Phase II of the State Auditor’s “Performance Audit on the State Administration’s Actions Exempting Certain Harbor Improvments to Facilitate Large Capacity Ferry Vessels from the Requirements of the Hawai’i Environmental Impact Statements Law”

The Meth Mess An anti-drug group says young people are getting the message about ice, but state data suggest adult use is holding steady

e’ve all seen the ads: A young man, his face pocked with sores, his eyes dark and vacant, rampages through a laundromat, demanding money from frightened women and children. A girl gets in the shower and sees herself curled in the corner, bleeding, admonishing, “Don’t do it. The “it is meth, speed, ice, batu. The ads are part of the Hawaii Meth Project’s statewide campaign, launched last year. And, according to the results of a survey released last week, they’re working. Fifty-four percent of teenagers—at whom the ads are aimed—said they “see great risk in taking meth once or twice, a 10 percent increase compared to last year. That’s particularly telling, Hawaii Meth Project says, because “Not Even Once is the campaign’s central slogan. Other findings are equally encouraging: 67 percent of teenagers said “their friends would give them a hard time for using meth, an 11 percent increase compared to last year, and 54 percent said they had “discussed the subject of meth with their parents in the last year, a 6 percent increase. Politicians, naturally, were quick to jump on board. “Thanks to the efforts of the Hawaii Meth Project we are educating Hawaii’s young people about the dangers of methamphetamine use, said state Senate President and recent Congressional candidate Colleen Hanabusa in a release. “Meth will destroy their health, rob them of their futures, and ruin the lives of those they care about most.

Sunset Special Daily 4:30-6PM 3 course meal $25.95 Kama’aina 6pm - 9pm daily 25% off all dinner entree’s 1450 Front Street Lahaina 661-0937
House Speaker Calvin Say echoed those comments, lauding the Meth Project for the “leadership role it has played in developing an effective prevention strategy in Hawaii. Amid the praise, however, came less rosy statistics from the sate Department of Health’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division. More than 3,500 adults entered state treatment centers for meth addiction last fiscal year, a 19 percent increase over the previous year, according to figures first reported in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Of all the adults admitted to treatment centers in the state, nearly half went in for ice. It’s been that way at least since 2006, with small peaks and valleys but no real indication that use is on a steady decline.
Of course, people getting treatment is a good thing. And campaigns aimed at teens will likely take years to have a significant impact on adult use. But the point is that for every hopeful study, there’s the cold, hard reality that meth remains cheap, easy to produce, widely available and dangerously addictive. As opposed to other drugs—particularly marijuana—that draw law enforcement resources, it is a legitimate threat to public health and safety. And it isn’t going away. â–

BECAUSE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH ISSUES WITH KIDS Catholic Youth Organization coach Michael Kman, 45, was charged in May with various misdemeanors regarding an alleged attempt over a several-month period to fix kids’ basketball games for Kman’s Our Lady of Lourdes church team in East Pennsboro Township, Pennsylvania. According to police, Kman sent multiple text messages to referees Jay and Jon Leader, offering them as much as $2,500 if certain games reached the “right outcome.” The Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg has suspended Kman from coaching. In Kman’s day job, he is a financial consultant.
YOUR NEXT OLYMPIC EVENT In May, Britain’s Norfolk District Council banned the traditional barroom game of “dwile flonking” just as the inaugural “world championships” were to take place at the Dog Inn pub in Ludham, Great Yarmouth. The game, which some believe has been played since “medieval times,” calls on players to fling a beersoaked rag from the end of a small stick toward the face of an opponent, and in the event the tosser misses the target two straight times, he must quickly down a half-pint of ale. The council called the game a “health and safety” problem.
WHEN THEY SAY ANIMAL CRACKERS, THEY MEAN IT Among the unique dining experiences of the Beijing Zoo is the ability of patrons to view an exhibit of frolicking hippopotamuses and then step into the zoo’s restaurant and dine on such dishes as toe of hippopotamus. Also available: kangaroo tail, deer penis, ant soup and other delectables. Animal welfare activists condemned the dining experience, according to a dispatch in London’s Guardian.
LOCK DOWN Virginia state inmate Kendall Gibson, who is serving 47 years for abduction and robbery committed at age 18, has spent the last 10 years in the prison’s “hole,” 23 hours a day in a cell “the size of a gas station restroom” (wrote an Associated Press reporter), not because he’s a danger to the prison population, but because he won’t cut his hair. Gibson is a Rastafarian and says his dreadlocks are devoutly authorized by the spiritual Lord, Jah. (A 1999 Virginia prison regulation requires administrative segregation for long-hairs.)
WHAT COULD GO WRONG? Standing firm under severe local criticism, John Chianelli (the chief mental-health administrator of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin) has begun housing aggressive males and vulnerable females together in the same unit. Chianelli defended his decision
with research showing that, in similar facilities, female patients provided a civilizing influence that reduced males’ propensities to violence — that is, at least males’ violence against other males.
HEADY ART “A Brave Man’s Solution to Baldness” (read an April Toronto Star headline): Philip Levine, 28, working with artist Kat Sinclair, initially solved the problem of his “boring” shaved head by having her paint original murals on his dome, with the result that he became a star in the London (England) club scene. Since then, Levine has upgraded — to painstakingly laying jewelry designs on his bald head, employing hundreds of thumbtack-sized Swarovski crystals to create a “swooping, shimmery, rockabilly” dome that dazzles in the light. The crystals shed after about a day, creating the opportunity for more designs.

SOLE PERPETRATOR Walter “Butch” Rubincan, 46, was charged in February in Newark, Del., as being a serial thief with perhaps a 20year habit, specializing in men’s shoes. When not out taking things, Rubincan (who “kept to himself,” according to neighbors) is a medical technologist at two local hospitals, a part-time actor, and a one-time championship figure-skater. When police investigators first visited Rubincan’s home, they discovered 3,900 shoes in about 150 boxes and bags (along with a few more upscale items and stolen photographs of young men), and Rubincan finally admitted he needed help.
WHEN MUSLIMS ATTACK In May, in the city of Al-Mubarraz, Saudi Arabia, a “policeman” from the notorious Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice approached a young couple in public to demand the woman’s ID, and the woman beat up the cop. Charges are pending against her, but women’s rights activists across the Muslim world are reporting the incident as a watershed moment, according to the Media Line (Middle East) news agency.
FAILED GETAWAYS (1) Noah Comer, 39, crashed his motorcycle and was killed as he tried to flee sheriff’s deputies in San Diego in January after allegedly stealing a pack of cigarettes from the AM/PM minimart. (2) Gordon Wright, 58, and two associates were killed in January going the wrong way on Interstate 94 in a Detroit suburb after allegedly stealing $45 worth of Axe beauty products from a CVS store. THE WEDDING ISSUE CELEBRATING THE KNOT, HOWEVER IT'S TIED...
T
o quote The Princess Bride's Impressive Clergyman, “Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam...” And yes, we know. Eyes will roll. Divorce statistics will be cited. Cynical singles will claim it's nothing more than an elaborate sham, an excuse to score free flatware and small appliances before the lawyers inevitably descend. Mawa—ahem—marriage has transformed, for many, from a sacred institution into a punch line. MODELS ALANA & HOKUAO PELLEGRINO
Not so fast. The unhappy couples grab all the attention, but back there, sitting quietly, fingers intertwined, sharing a knowing smile, are the happy couples. The ones whose union has withstood
the years. The ones who have grown together, laughed together, yes, cried and screamed together, and come out the other side still fully committed, 'til death do them part. They can finish each other's sentences; hell, they can finish each other's thoughts. They've built furniture, they've built families, they've built lives. They're not necessarily better than single people, but they're certainly not worse. And they deserve to be honored. What you'll find in the following pages is a celebration of weddings— and the marriages they kick-start— that embraces the inherent lunacy of throwing a big party where you invite possibly everyone you know and buy tons of food and booze, all so you can, essentially, sign a contract. But, of course, it's so much more than that. It's a bwessed awangement, a dweam wifin a dweam. A ceremony. A celebration. An “I do.” A beginning.

THE WEDDING ISSUE
A Poi Dog Wedding
by Anu Yagi
Drawing on Hawaii’s broad spectrum of cultures,
local weddings are both unique and universal
O
f our shared milestones, only the most consequential are marked by ceremony. The way we officiate— and celebrate—marriage incorporates all manner of tradition, from as broad a spectrum of time and culture as the union itself has been recognized. Here in Hawaii, our “rainbow state” status is twofold—cultural diversity paired with the atmospheric phenomena of the marriage between sunshine and rain. Ritual, by its very nature, is most deeply rooted in our heritages, and Hawaii’s spectrum of ethnicities afford no shortage of variety. What constitutes “local” today is a poi dog hybridization of aboriginal upstarts, plantation-era factions and continued internationalization. Beyond even our epic baby luaus and high school graduation chaos, weddings are prime examples of how we honor our roots while branding something uniquely our own. Case in point: Wailuku company Wishes and Dreams, which crafts elaborate framed works—usually in the shape of a family mon (crest)—comprised of 1,001 origami paper cranes. Three retired school teachers, Carolyn Hashiro, Christine Hondo and Diane Orikasa, do this delicate work, the business gaining its start in the mid ‘80s when Hashiro’s then soon-to-be-married
niece picked up on the trend from Oahu. Japanese origami lore holds that folding 1,000 cranes will bring good fortune, grant wishes or cure sickness, and is a popular gift not only at weddings but for all sorts of well-wishing. In the HI-style tradition, the bride usually folds 1,000, with the groom pouring all his attentions into making that extra one extra-lucky. Some couples choose to have their loved ones participate as a way to add sentiment, but the option always remains to purchase pre-made cranes if your schedule (or dexterity) is limited. At least eight weeks lead-time is needed, says Hashiro, and couples should book an appointment to come in and plan their design and color scheme. Typically the cranes are all made of gold paper, but silver has become popular as people try to match their household décor. By no means reserved only for those of Japanese descent, for those who don’t have or don’t know their mon it’s become popular to pick a character or image symbolic to the couple, such as a pair of ulua for fishing enthusiasts. Hashiro says they’ve made things like cupids and even a gecko. In Chinese tradition, encouraging luckiness for the couple might be less tangible, but is no less tedious. For the traditionally untethered, the big day is mostly relegated to weekends and picked based on the logistics of getting time off from work and coordinating travel with important out-of-state guests. Chinese
Ask A Pro: Photography In addition to being MauiTime’s ace staff photographer, Sean Michael Hower runs Maui Wedding Medias. His Web site is mauiweddingmedias.com What is your one peice of advice for couples on their big day? Don’t drink too much before the ceremony. It seems simple, but a lot of couples overlook this, or should I say, overdo this. I am not saying don’t drink. A glass of champagne or a cocktail is great for calming the nerves and taking the edge off, but too many might make those beautiful moments something you don’t want to remember. What should be done in advance of the big day to make sure the photography goes smoothly? I always tell my clients there is no such thing as a stupid question. Communication is key. Make sure you have already established what time you want your photographer to arrive.
Are you going to have them take some shots of the bridal party getting ready as well as the ceremony? Or do you want to only have the ceremony and family shots? Prepare a loose timeline for your event and the shots that you want your photographer to get—along with the family members involved and their names— and give that to your photographer. A list like family shots, romantic shots, ceremony, postceremony group shots, reception socializing, etcetera ensures there is no amibiguity in what you’re expecting. Is this something that a wedding coordinator can assist with? Sure, a wedding coordinator is helpful. You can hire a wedding coordinator to handle all of the details of your celebration and
custom, however, encourages selecting the most auspicious day through careful examination of the couple’s celestial birth signs. Not just the day is important but also the hour— or, to be precise, half-hour. Being married on or after the half-hour is said to represent prosperity if the hour is on the upswing. Also in Chinese tradition, “lucky money” is given to the couple in red envelopes. But at what kind of wedding is money not customary (or lucky, for that matter)? For the Portuguese and Filipino, Catholic observances—such as the binding of hands—are often upheld. But one Catalan custom sometimes maintained in the 808 includes passing a shoe around to collect cash for the bride. As for the Filipinos, they do it right by dancing for money. In the book Family Traditions in Hawaii, author Joan Namkoong explains this tradition is based on “bitor, the showering of the wedding couple with money [which] was a custom of the past that measured the prestige of a family in the community.” Namkoong also writes that a “further variation that is prominent today in Hawaii is the placing of money into the ceremony, or you can also hire one for the day of. Wedding coordinator packages vary, so again, ask a lot of questions. Some handle the photography for you, and you will not have the option to pick a photographer, others may give you a list of photographers to choose from. How do photography packages and rates work? Most packages will outline a price, the number of hours the photographer is shooting at your wedding, the number of prints you get back. With videography, you will want to check that there are two wireless mics offered, will the
mouth of the bride while the couple dances.” Indeed, set to the rhythm of lively Filipino love songs, the transferrence of money to the couple by pinning bills to their garb or passing money mouth-to-mouth is commonplace (germaphobes turn away). Speaking of mouths, it wouldn’t be a poi dog wedding without local food. “It’s the wedding feast in Hawaii that’s so telling about ethnic diversity,” writes Namkoong. “Where else in the world could you find a single buffet table laden with sushi, chow mein, roast pig, lumpia, kim chee, roast beef, ham, rice and potato-macaroni salad?” Just as that list of foods could go on and on, so could a list of wedding traditions. (We haven’t even touched on Native Hawaiian customs, including the ubiquitous wearing of maile leis.) But whatever traditions we choose to perpetuate, resurrect or create, our varied cultural heritage is—and should remain—a source of inspiration. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/poidog

THE WEDDING ISSUE
Unusual Unions
by Ynez Tongson
From swimming with sharks to soaring in helicopters, Maui truly is paradise for the adventurous betrothed Why not get married at Little Beach? That way you can bypass some of the Bridezilla woes (picking out a dress— pshaw!), as well as alleviate anxiety amongst guests who are worried about being caught in the same ensemble as someone else.
I
’ve got a complicated relationship with weddings. That is to say, I’m probably never going to have one. I think I’m the only person at MauiTime who’s single. This is because while most of MauiTime (both past and present) is on the glamorous and gregarious side of the spectrum, I’m more on the short and angry side. For example, two Thanksgivings ago I was plotting to liberate (aka steal) a baby elephant from the LA Zoo, while I lectured my then-significant other on how I would never go through the ordeal of preparing an ornate Thanksgiving meal. (Don’t worry, the elephant wouldn’t fit in my purse, and the significant other eventually came to his senses.) So please excuse any cynicism that finds its way into this article. It’s not you—it’s me.
No matter what your take on weddings, whether they’re the celebration of a life-long union, a good reason to write a pre-nup, the beginning of the end or just another excuse to throw a party and change your Facebook status, you can’t deny that Maui offers some pretty amazing ways you can tie the knot. Or at least get knots in your stomach. Instead of taking a limo to your wedding destination, why not get there by helicopter? That way, you can exchange vows on those hard-to-reach Maui hotspots, like atop a jagged cliff with the roaring sea below, beneath a majestic waterfall or on a dormant volcano. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Sunshine Helicopters, AlexAir and Air Maui will all hover and deliver. Imagine the sun creating a halo on your beloved’s head, as you swear your undying devotion. And if anyone falls off the » Continued on pg.19
Ask A Pro: Formal Wear Geanelli Lewis’s shop, L’amour Bridal Wear, is on Dairy Road in Kahului. Her website is mauiformal.com What one thing do you wish everyone would do when shopping for formal wear? Make an appointment instead of walking in. When you make an appointment, you will be the store staff’s priority and will receive better service. What is the proper etiquette when planning bridesmaid dresses? The bridesmaids must respect the bride’s choice because after all, it is her wedding day. At the same time, the bride must be aware of the different sizes and ethnicity/ race/nationality and personality of her wedding party. A selfish bride won’t care about the things mentioned above, but as a caring bride and as a true friend, she won’t put them in an outrageous colors, atrocious silhouettes and sleazy styles. Do the bridesmaids pay or does the bride? Depending on the culture and budget, the bride or the bridesmaids can pay for their dress. Can the bride ask them to purchase a specific dress and color? Most definitely! Can a bride expect alterations to be included in the price of the gown? In general, no. This service is always separate from purchase as each bride requires different alteration job orders due to their body shape or form as well as the style of wedding gown they have chosen. A simple analogy is when you buy a pair of jeans. Hemming is always an additional expense. Any alterations on clothing, whether simple or complicated, are an extra charge. Unless a store has a special offer for this service, expect to pay. Do you have any tips for tuxes? Yes! If they live in a town that doesn’t have a suit/tuxedo/ bridal shop and they absolutely must take the measurements themselves, they need to follow the instructions carefully on how to take measurements for better-fitting outfits. Measuring for tuxes is complicated. Otherwise, we highly recommend you get professionally fitted and, once measured, at least try the coat on to reconfirm that the size assigned will fit properly. Can you rent pants or jackets only if necessary? Yes. This is what we call an “a-lacarte” order. But it’s typically priced slightly higher than a complete rental set. If you’re renting a gown can you have it altered to fit better? Absolutely not. A shortened dress will not fit the same for the next person who might be taller than the last. Any rental garments are not permitted to have a permanent alteration done. Temporary hemming
is the most allowed alteration done on any rental garments. Other than this, if a customer insists on a custom fit, they must purchase the outfit. What about cleaning on rental garments? Do you need to have them cleaned before you return them or is that part of the rental fee? Generally, it is part of the rental fee, unless a special arrangement is made between the renter and the company. If an ordinary dry cleaning does not remove any staining or soiling, the rental is deemed damaged and the renter will be responsible for additional expense to replace the damaged garments. Can you rent shoes? Yes. Depending on the company’s program, a pair of basic black shoes is included in a complete rental set or is paid separately at a lower rate than if rented by itself. If the shoes are being special ordered, make sure that the wearer’s wider or longer foot—if one foot is larger, as is often the case—is traced on paper. Depending on the manufacturer, shoes may run smaller or bigger than what you normally wear. This especially applies to out-of-town renters who are not able to do a physical or personal fitting in the store. How far in advance should brides start looking for a gown? Seven months is good timing. This is to give time for a bride who might need to special-order her gown. Depending on the gown manufacturer, her specialorder gown will take three to six months to arrive. Then she’ll need time to do alterations if needed. She will also save on those extra charges for last-minute orders. - Jen Russo

THE WEDDING ISSUE
Tips For the Reluctant Groom (or Bride) by Jacob Shafer
Dos and don’ts to get you through your nuptials unscathed
F
irst off, to clarify: “reluctant,” in this case, doesn’t mean people who don’t want to get married; that’s a whole separate issue and frankly one best sorted out by some combination of family/clergymen/ therapists/lawyers. No, we’re talking about people who are iffy on the idea of a wedding. You’ll know them as the person who drops not-so-subtle hints about eloping in Vegas (“two words, honey: ‘free buffet’”) and who, twenty-four hours before the big day, asks, “So what’s a centerpiece?” These wedding-averse individuals tend to be kane (there’s no stereotype involving nine-yearold boys thumbing through tuxedo magazines, after all), but it isn’t a gender-specific condition; wahine are also afflicted. So what’s the problem, you ask? Not everyone has to have a big, fat [insert culture/ nationality/trendy theme] wedding. True, but the trouble arises when one partner has visions of elaborate table-settings and eight-tiered cakes while the other is busy not giving a crap. This is a recipe for disaster. While she (or he) is running around like a headless hen stressing over seating arrangements and that impending rainstorm, you’re off shrugging your shoulders and wondering if you can just skip to the honeymoon bit. Beginning a (hopefully) lifelong union with this kind of disconnect is seriously bad ju-ju. So—what to do? As with most things marriage-related, it’s a meet-in-the-middle
scenario. You can’t expect her (or him) to feel the way you do, just as she (or he) can’t expect you to suddenly cry in the middle of a Say Yes to the Dress marathon. The key for the person who believes every detail is paramount is to accept that the other person doesn’t and never will and to not take this as a sign that the marriage is doomed to fail. The key for you (and we’re assuming it’s you if you’ve read this far) is, well, let’s get to it... DO find a few things you care about, and take care of them. Come on, there has to be something that piques your interest. The invitations? The music? The pupus? The quality of the champagne? Whatever it is, dive in with both feet and let your bride-(or groom)-to-be know that you’ve got it covered. It’ll reduce stress overall and keep you busy. Plus, when your drunk uncle compliments the playlist while stumbling toward the dance floor, you can take all the credit. DON’T question the importance of things she (or he) finds important. There will be stuff—probably lots of stuff—that feels trivial and superfluous to you. Keep it to yourself. Weddings are silly affairs no matter what, full of superstition and muddled tradition. Just roll with it. That doesn’t mean you can’t have an opinion, but it should be a constructive opinion that involves as little scoffing as possible. DO offer a shoulder to cry on. There will be moments when she (or he) is hysterical, certain that everything is going to go wrong, including all the guests getting food poisoning and the DJ playing nothing but
Satanic hymns on a loop. Be sympathetic. Be comforting. And mostly, be quiet. Pointing out the irrationality (“I’m not even sure Satanic hymns are a thing, sweetie”) will, in all likelihood, start a pointless, protracted argument that neither person can possibly win. (Though some might argue that’s good practice for marriage.) DON’T get caught up in the hysteria. It’s important to overcome your indifference, but it can also be a powerful tool. When everyone around you—bride, mother, mother-in-law, maid of honor, random lady who may or may not have wandered in off the street—is » Continued “Ask a Pro” from pg.13 budgets. You’ll want to know if copyright on your photos is released or not, how many prints you will recieve, what kind of digital output you will get, will your images be touched up, what styles the photographer will be using. Some styles include photojournalistic, candid/fun, romantic or traditional. You can also request all styles. What does copyright release mean? If copyright is released by the photographer and you get images on a disk that means that you have the right to make enlargements and prints from the disk. There are some restrictions, however: you cannot then turn around and sell those images to a bridal magazine, for example. Most photographers make money from making prints and many will retain the rights to do so; others will give you the rights to make those prints. How far in advance should I start booking a photographer? I have bookings that are over a year out. Every year some dates are special, like this year October 10, 2010, and next year’s November 11, 2011. If you are choosing a date like that you may need years of advance planning. But for the most part, as soon as you have a date and location for your ceremony you can start reserving a
frothing at the mouth, you can be an island of calm, secure in the knowledge that even if the flowers are the wrong shade of chartreuse, the open bar will probably be the only thing most people remember. DO enjoy yourself. At the end of the day, when all the planning and arranging are finished, you’re having a party with food, tunes, ample libations and tons of people you love. Revel in it. Because—if everything plays out right—this is only gonna happen once. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/groomtips photographer. Just remember that here on Maui, because we are a destination wedding location, wedding photographers can be busy all week long, not just on the weekends. What are some keys to working well with a photographer? Talk to them over the phone and meet with them in person in advance if you can. Get a feel for working with them. Remember this person is going to be pointing a camera at you and capturing your every moment. Relax and have fun at your ceremony and your photos will reflect that joy. It can be a stressful day, but you don’t want your photographic memories to show that. When you’re planning your ceremony and reception, allow some photography time in between. Nobody really wants to have to do a full-on photo shoot on their wedding day; you’re there to have fun with family and friends and celebrate your union. So to ease that fact, schedule the time for your romantic shots, family shots or whatever. Gathering family members for a photo can be a challenge—be prepared to appoint someone to wrangle Uncle Edward away from the pupu table for the photo you want him in. Then once you have knocked it out you can focus on your guests and enjoying yourself. - Jen Russo

» Continued from pg.15 cliff/waterfall/volcano, then hey—zombie wedding theme! Everything is made so much cooler with zombies. Or ninjas. Then again, maybe you’re on the pirate side of the whole pirate vs. ninja debate. (And trust me, there is a pirate vs. ninja debate. Google it.) Forsake those landlubbers and grab your favorite wench or buccaneer by the booty and head for the high seas. Before you say “aye” be aware that getting married on the ocean isn’t for the lily-livered (or easily seasick). Both amauiweddingday.com and justmauied. com are wonderful starting points to find a boat just right for you and your mateys. Of course, it wouldn’t be a pirate occasion if you didn’t tip back a bit of grog prior to the matrimonial matters. Mayhap swimming with the fishes is how you like it. Then Makena Coast Dive Charters is thar…um there to help you out. Beautiful underwater scenes along the Makena coast and Molokini await. Wondering how you

What about those couples who are interested in an underwater adventure, but don’t have the scuba certification and matching mermaid fins? The Ocean Center also offers a fishful wedding with the least amount of soggy bridesmaids. Clichés to Avoid All weddings feature cliches; it’s tradition after all. But a handful of particularly worn-out practices need to be left at the altar... EXCESSIVE TOASTS A letter away from roasts. A word from the best man and maid of honor is fine; maybe Dad and Mom. Drunk dude at table seven? Don’t pass him the mic. THE MACARENA Shouldn’t have to say this, but in case there have been some really long engagements, it’s over. ‘Been over for a while. (You too, Chicken Song). SMOOSHING CAKE IN THE FACE Yeah. Didn’t see that coming. LIMOS Is a limo necessary at a wedding? Better question: is a limo ever necessary? READINGS FROM CORINTHIANS When the band Tonic turned the psalm into a love song, it was over. When
that song landed a spot on AsSeen-on-TV compilation The Edge, it was really over. NAVAJO BLESSINGS If you’re not Navajo and you don’t dance with wolves, don’t read a damn Navajo verse. TOSSING OF THE GARTER Flinging a thigh-sweaty, lacy piece of elastic into a crowd isn’t cute or racy. It’s gross. SAVING THE CAKE Have you ever eaten a year-old, frozen piece of cake? Neither have we. Instead, use the space in your freezer for a rotating cast of vodka bottles. That’s where the romance really happens. THROWING RICE Birds do not explode if they eat uncooked rice; Mythbusters says so. But it can lead to nasty spills and is as much a curse to clean up as confetti. Instead try butterflies, paper airplanes or bubbles.

A-OK Cherish it: an ‘80s TV remake that manages not to suck The A-Team

I told you we left the oven on.

emakes are a tricky thing. If you reimagine or re-invent a well-known story, you run the risk of alienating the established audience by going against what they expect to see. If you play it too much for nostalgia and don’t add anything new, you run the risk of alienating everyone else. Enter Joe Carnahan’s lavish adaptation of The A-Team, which offers some updates but mostly gives audiences who loved the show and want a summer, Coke-andpopcorn thrill ride exactly what they want. For those who aren’t filled with giddy nostalgia whenever they hear that triumphant theme music, the concept of the the show and the movie is pretty simple: four tough, brilliant, loose cannon military men with different skill sets work together under the radar, taking on any mission that comes their way. For Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson), Face (Bradley Cooper), B.A. Baracus (MMA fighter

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson) and “Mad Dog” Murdock (Sharlto Copely), the goal is to clear their names after a shady assignment goes sour and our heroes are falsely imprisoned. Carnahan, who directed Narc and Smokin’ Aces, has a gift for staging action and is clearly a huge fan of the show, to the point where this feels like a $100 million dollar pilot for a revised version of the series. This is closer to the cheerful, bubble-gum action comedy that was Charlie’s Angels than the elegantly stylish Mission: Impossible. It’s also self-satisfied, never subtle and completely ridiculous—but who cares? The thrills are thick, the four leads couldn’t be more charismatic or perfectly cast and anyone who savors a great summer movie will sport a grin lasting the entire two hours. The dialogue is lazy, the plot is silly and unbelievable, it doesn’t know when to end and the emphasis isn’t on character. But I’m letting this one get away with it because I had so much fun. ■

Film Capsules
New This Week TOY STORY 3 (3D) - G - Family, Animated - The latest from the wizards at Pixar has Buzz, Woody and the gang trying to survive life at a daycare center, which is like Hostel for toys. 124 min. JONAH HEX - PG13 - Action, Drama - Josh Brolin is a bounty hunter, John Malkovich is his terrorist target and Megan Fox plays against type as a hot chick. 96 min.
Now Showing THE A-TEAM - PG13 - Action - The ‘80s TV show gets an update, though presumably fools will still be pitied. Liam Neeson stars. Seriously. 117 min. GET HIM TO THE GREEK - R - Comedy - A record company stooge (Jonah Hill) babysits a flamboyant rock star (Russell Brand) and they spend a quiet night playing Charades. Or something. 109 min. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (3D) - PG Animated - The son of a dragon slayer learns that the mythical beasts are just misunderstood. Tends to happen when you’re 50 feet long and breathe fire. 98 min. IRON MAN 2 - PG13 - Action - Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark and his metallic alter ego. And Sabbath gets some more royalty checks. 125 min. THE KARATE KID - PG - Action, Drama - Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith take over for Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio in yet another ‘80s remake/reboot that’s not as sacrilegious as fans of the fun but overrated original would have you believe. 140 min. KILLERS - PG13 - Action, Comedy - Ashton Kutcher is a secret agent with a license to kill. Like James Bond, with a Twitter account. 100 min. LETTERS TO JULIET - PG - Romance - Is this: a) A buddy cop movie; b) A torture porn grindhouse flick; or c) A rom com about an American girl in Italy? If you answered a or b, we have a question for you: what’s the rent like under rocks these days? 101 min. MARMADUKE - PG - Family - Hey, you know that comic strip about the big dog and his hilarious hijinks that no one has read since the Carter Administration? They made it into a movie. 88 min. OCEANS - G - Documentary - Disney goes under the sea in this latest visual dazzler. Wonder if they find Nemo? 100 min. PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME - PG13 - Fantasy, Action - Films based on video games don’t exactly have a sterling track record, but this should at least please FX-obsessed teens and anyone interested in ogling a bronzed, beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal. 116 min. PRINCESS KA’UILANI - PG - Drama - Taking complex historical events and turning them into love stories is always a dicey proposition, but this Hawaii-set tale has generated a lot of buzz, both positive and negative. 130 min. ROBIN HOOD - PG13 - Action, Adventure - Yet another take on the legendary outlaw, this time with Russell Crowe in the title role. Safe to assume it’ll have all the joy and historical accuracy of Gladiator. 140 min. SEX AND THE CITY 2 - R - Comedy, Romance - Four narcissistic, horny, shopping-obsessed Manhattanites head for the North African desert— what could go wrong? 146 min. SHREK FOREVER AFTER (3D) - PG - Family, Animated - The final chapter in the Shrek saga finds our big green hero in an alternate universe where, presumably, wisecracking fairy-tale characters still make non-stop pop culture references. 93 min. SPLICE - R - Horror - Two scientists create a genetic abomination and grow to love it. Similar story has played out in trailer parks across the country. 104 min.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore... And if the Benoits strike a chord with you, that's probably amore too. Love abounds in Phil and Angela Benoit's latest album, Golden Sun. Quiet jazz melodies lovingly crafted by this self-proclaimed gypsy couple will easily lift your spirits. The Benoits will host a special CD release party at Cafe O'Lei at the Dunes, featuring Marcus Johnson on acoustic bass, Pat Wellington on drums (Paul Marchetti is in Europe, in case you were wondering) and John Zangrando on horns and flute. Too, the couple's son, Max, will drop in from Oahu to join them on the last set. Complimentary light pupus will be served and a full dinner menu is available for purchase. Not enough? No worries! Starting on June 27, the Benoits will start a regular Sunday evening post at Stella Blues Cafe. Stella also welcomes back slack key cutie Makana on Friday (June 18). Tickets to this Supper Club show sold out early last time, because it's love at first sound with this eloquently de-tuned master. Cafe O'Lei: 877-0073 / Stella Blues: 874-3779 [Sierra Brown]

That’s Amore
In this day and age, the amount of time and effort put into the mystical (and mildly horrifying) concept of “family time” falls off the map at around the same time Boy and Girl Scouts stops being cool. So it's become something of a well-kept secret that when parents sit down with their teenagers and share, um, a beverage, everyone gets sucked into Family Guy. Next thing you know, the whole 'ohana is actually enjoying themselves, earning their Lightsaber Battle merit badges while making s'mores on the stove. Sometimes (strange as it may seem) there are 'ohana who have not just maintained “family time,” but made good use of it. Witness the fruits of these families' labor and love (including Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano noms and awards), in a special Father's Day showcase, featuring four dad and lad teams in the 4 Fathers and 4 Sons concert. George and Keoki Kahumoku, Dennis and David Kamakahi, Kevin and Ikaika Brown and Richard and Kai Ho'opi'i will surprise and delight in an evening full of slack key guitar, ‘ukulele, vocal harmonies and falsetto melodies. The first half features father and son duets, before the musical showdown where boys vs. men. Go see the show, and who knows, you might be motivated to do more as a family too. 242-7469, mauiarts.org [SB]

Thursday (June 24) – Tuesday (June 29), Hawai’i State Public Libraries, Free
If the Maui Tropical Plantation is a plantation, then I'm kicking myself for not becoming a farmer. Alright, being a farmer is just too much damn work. But enjoying the hard work of others is, of course, a favorite pastime of mine. And I could spend hours enjoying a leisurely stroll through fields of foliage like kamiya papayas to heliconia, scurrying away from irritable swans and tossing flakes at sparkly fish and riding the tram, all the while pretending to be wandering through the Amazon. The banquet room of such a paradise is easily the perfect venue for the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra's dinner and benefit concert. Especially with the evening getting off to a Hawaiian-style start with music by Uluwehi Guerrero, Album of the Year-winner at the 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano awards, and hula dancers from his Halau Hula Kauluokala. Next, seventeen-year-old cello prodigy Riana Anthony will perform a solo by Paganini, followed by two selections by Honolulu's Lifen Anthony Cello Quintent. Then, logically, The Latin Project from Shanghai, Asia's premier salsa and Latin jazz band, will play music for open salsa dancing. If it becomes awkward when a polo-shirt-clad man with a single bead of sweat between his eyes asks you to shake your bon bon with him, just slip away to the silent auction.Or settle back into your seat to enjoy more of the delicious dinner. All proceeds will support the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, which gives youth a chance to experience and learn orchestral string instruments, which are not taught in any private or public school in Maui County (doubt we'll soon be affording any cello when we've been forced to furlough). It should be law that every keiki have cherished, “small kid time” memories of regular pilgrimages to the library. My own reflections on toddlerdom are happily crowded with little more. See, Mom and I took our excursions seriously. Before brandishing our embossed green cards (remember the old ones?), we’d sit under the shade of a tree, peel the Saran off of a two-pack of manapua and fuel-up before getting our fill of heady bibliomania. We’d exhaust operating hours and always left with a stack of books bigger than I was. One of my favorites was a ruddy orange-colored gem called Concoctions. In it were recipes for shea butter lip balm in foil tubes and how to polish chrome with peanut butter. What you’re bound to learn—and the memories you’ll make—are boundless at our public libraries. All the more enticing this summer is that the Hawaii State Public Library System enjoys no furloughs in the month of June and July and—amidst a slew of incentives—will offer these upcoming performances in their 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program: Peter and Melinda Wing in “Pirates Ahoy!” Thursday (June 24), 10am, Makawao; Storyteller-Balladeer James McCarthy, Friday (June 25), 10:30am, Kihei and 2pm, Wailuku; and Tuesday (June 29), 11am, Hana. librarieshawaii. org; Makawao: 573-8785, Kihei: 875-6833, Wailuku: 243-5766, Hana: 248-4848

s I shook his hand, Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett peered at my throat and exclaimed, “Is that a hickey on your neck?â€? Slightly star struck, I laughed nervously and tried to explain myself (heck, it was Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett), admittedly a little hurt—and confused—that he thought I had a hickey. What I had was an oozing steamiron burn (I thought I could quickly touch up my collar without taking my jacket off). In retrospect, I suppose it was more appalling than a hickey. And whether or not I were Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett, I’d be curious too if the lady attempting to sell me silk pants looked as if she’d been necking with a lit cigar. Pleasantries thus exchanged, I proceeded with my silk-pant sales pitch. This proved easier than I expected, because Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett cut me off, saying, “Oh, I know which ones— they’re my favorite pants.â€? OK. Disclosing that I once was a pant salesman in the Midwest might seem like something that’d sully a story about having talked to Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett, but hear me out: So what if I sold silk pants? At Tommy Bahama. In Kansas City. What else is a homesick Hawaiian to do? And you know what? When helping Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett with our wide selection of khaki and light khaki pants, I realized something important. I SOLD PANTS! I also learned that when money is no object and you have nothing left to prove, you can do and buy whatever you want. For Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett, this meant Tommy Bahama silk pants. He already knew that, and I was rendered useless. Up until my Brett-piphany, I’d really been over-thinking things. With a limited retail arsenal and the weight of kanaka culture on my shoulders, you’d have thought I was trying to outďŹ t a revolution. Because when I was not casually dressing the Kansas City elite, I ensemble-d the Heartland’s newly betrothed. I took costuming couples’ ďŹ rst matrimonialmemories, orselectingthe palette of their Waikiki honeymoon, way too seriously. Gushing with unsolicited soapbox history lessons, I took sole responsibility for their introduction to my island culture— even if their destination wedding was in Ft. Lauderdale or Baja. Could I have been so silly to think myself master of pairing
khaki and a camp shirt? Or prodigious in my selection of accent color undershirts? Or how any of that might foster cultural understanding? No, I was not even a real pant salesperson. I was a pant ringer-upper—and one with a lifethreatening hickey, at that. In letting go, I realized that when someone walks into a Tommy Bahama, they’ve come for exactly what they expect to see. Pineapple lamps. Mango candles. Floral shirts with coconut shell buttons. Dessert plates with hula girls printed on them. Khaki pants. I’d do best to concede to it. You know what happened then? My sales improved. I guess the “Purveyors of Island Lifestyleâ€? have this Hawaii thing ďŹ gured out better than I thought...

arly this month, loveable Missourian Rush Limbaugh, 59, married his fourth wife, Kathryn Rogers, 33, in a Hawaiian-themed wedding in Palm Beach, Florida. Pleas were made to the media to give the party privacy, and security included “as many 50 private security guards (that’s one per eight guests) and three uniformed Palm Beach Police cops, including two in boats at sea,â€? reports The Palm Beach Post. Elton John is said to have been paid $1 million to perform for Limbaugh’s approximately 400 guest—a list which included, “Karl Rove; former presidential hopeful and Law & Order star Fred Thompson‌ Fox News talker Sean Hannity; former New York City Mayor Rudi Giuliani; New England Patriots owner Bob Craft; former Clinton White House weasel James Carville and his wife, GOP analyst Mary Matalin‌â€? and none other than Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett. Bet you ten bucks he wore Tommy Bahama silk pants. â–

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Would you prefer to paint an excellent depiction of a bowl of fruit, or a more amateurish portrait of someone you know? Which would you rather hang in your house? For most people, the subject probably matters more than the quality, at least to a point. That’s your inimitable advantage. You’re complicated, dynamic, and interesting, if somewhat sloppy and rough around the edges. Your peers may be more “perfect” than you, but they’re ultimately bores—photorealistic paintings of fruit. Don’t let their tedious and mind-numbing perfection intimidate you. If anything, it should be the other way around.

Imagine two break-ups. One features your lover ending things with vicious words, and running off with your best friend. In the other, your partner simply disappears one day and you never see nor hear from them again. Which would be worse? I suspect the former, while more immediately painful, would be easier to bounce back and recover from, while the latter would cause your overactive imagination to invent new tortures for you daily. Don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re sparing someone else by being hard (or impossible) to read. If you must cause some hurt, be kind enough to really do it, and spare them the anguish of their own imaginations.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) It’s hard to build trust and create a relationship when one person involved is held at gunpoint. While there are no actual firearms in this scenario, there are perceived ones. Equal footing is never possible when one of the people feels so at risk. Lower the figurative gun, Leo. You probably didn’t even know you had it in your hand. Notice it, finally, and change things up. This may involve a radical reinvention of your connection, which will hardly be comfortable—but now that you’ve seen what shape it’s really in, how could you conceivably do otherwise?
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Is Limbo such a bad place, really? Sure the lack of definition and direction can be somewhat maddening—but also a bit freeing, don’t you think? Sometimes we enter moments in our life that are sort of in between defined chapters, where we’re just not sure what’ll happen next or where we’re headed. Obviously, spending too long in such a place isn’t healthy, but a week or three here and there is perfectly fine. You need time to let thought percolate and settle. Don’t freak out too much. In fact, make it this week’s mission to do your best to enjoy this down time.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Many models have made imperfections into the things that set them apart from a sea of pretty faces (think Cindy Crawford’s mole). Try not to be too self-conscious about your own flaws. They might not be as aesthetically pleasing as something a model might flaunt, but they’re nevertheless the unique something that’ll get you noticed, which could lead to romance, a job, or anything else you might desire. You can’t do much about your imperfections, so why not proudly own them? Perfection is terribly boring, anyway. Wouldn’t you rather be obviously flawed—and therefore interesting?
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’ve never let yourself be particularly limited by rules that don’t make sense. Don’t start now. When the powers that be start being ridiculous, rebels are necessary to point it out and subvert their authority. This week, that’s you. While you should absolutely take your job as dissenter seriously, that doesn’t mean earnest preaching from atop a soap box or even angry, violent action. This week, the best way to change people’s minds is, weirdly enough, through laughter. The more thoughtfully silly you can be, the better. Poke fun. Be playful. And watch everything change.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Moral outrage can be a fantastic and persistent motivator, but it’s hardly conducive to a good night’s sleep. Learn to put it aside occasionally. There are times and places to fight the good fight, but if you’re always doing battle inside your mind, you’ll not only be completely ineffective when it comes to the real thing, you’ll also be a tremendous bore to be around. You need to learn to balance your righteous agenda with other stuff, like playtime, relaxation, romance, creativity, and just plain fun. This week, work on that—or rather, play with it.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Hindsight is 20-20, they say. However, your foresight is equally accurate, if you remove whatever distorting lenses you happen to be wearing. These will mostly take the shape of desires—how you want the situation to be rather than seeing how it actually is. If you make decisions based on these well-meaning delusions, you’ll probably be unhappy with the consequences. Be brutally honest with yourself. The situation is what it is, whether you acknowledge it or not. You will be forced to admit to it eventually, but wouldn’t you rather do so now, while you still have power to act? If you wait until later, all you’ll be able to say is, “Well, hindsight is 20-20.”
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s time to flaunt your strength. Sometimes, showing a little muscle is enough to deter the kind of behavior you want to prevent, which is far better than having to cope with problems after they’ve cropped up. Offering a powerful warning now can keep you from having to visit a much less pleasant place later. Don’t be too wimpy to be convincing, though.Committingtoyourroleaspeacekeepermeansfollowingthroughwhennecessary.Fortunately,beingtruly willing to carry out your unspoken threats will almost always be enough to make them unnecessary. Don’t bluff though—people will see right through it.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) One of your strengths (which is of course also a weakness) is your ability to just go with the flow of what’s happening. Unfortunately, this means you haven’t had a lot of practice swimming against the current. Much of the time this is a bad idea; however, occasionally it’s necessary. This, my dear, is one of those times when you must pick a destination and do what you must to head that direction, even if it’s difficult and it seems like most of your life is offering resistance to it. Just remember—you may not feel like you have the strength, persistence, and experience to get to where you’re going, but you will. Prove it to yourself by actually getting there.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) The opinions of strangers shouldn’t really matter to you, and yet they do. Sometimes, they almost feel like an oppressive yoke, limiting what you can or can’t do or say. Occasionally, these restrictions are probably good, reining you in when you might otherwise get yourself into trouble. Most of the time, however, they’re needless limitations that just keep you from realizing and exercising your fullest potential. You need to put on blinders and earmuffs this week, so as to inure yourself to the criticism or judgment of people you don’t know and shouldn’t care about. You know what’s right for you. Go there, even if it means tuning out your critics.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re like a bird that’s accidentally flown into a glass-walled room. To your bird eyes, the clear plate windows don’t look any different than the open window you flew in through. Here, you’ll have to use other tools to figure out how to get out. Obviously, you’re much more intelligent than your average fowl, but you may still be somewhat confounded by this week’s dilemma. Don’t be a bird, who’d flip out when a well-meaning human tries to help it get out, perhaps snapping its neck by flying, panicked, into a window. If similar help is offered you, I hope you have the good grace to calmly accept.
