Coconut Wireless Leonard Rejected, Lingle Fumes The strange saga of Judge Katherine Leonard came to a close last week, as the state Senate rejected Gov. Lingle’s Chief Justice nominee. The vote came after the Hawaii State Bar Association’s board of directors deemed Leonard unqualified, an assessment Lingle blasted as “outrageous.” The fact that Leonard would have been Hawaii’s first female Chief Justice only fanned the flames, and the whole thing quickly devolved into another “Lingle versus the legislature” pissing contest.

who voted against her really do so because of gender bias and/or a vendetta against Lingle? Let’s turn to Maui’s own Sen. Roz Baker, who spoke on the Senate floor before the Leonard vote: “It is with regret and sadness that I find I must [oppose] the nomination of Katherine Leonard as Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court.... By all accounts [Leonard] has been an able jurist during her short tenure on the Intermediate Court of Appeals. She is deemed very bright, writes well and is considered a very capable legal analyst. But the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Justice require more than just having

Basically, if a lot of people recycle their cans and bottles—the ostensible aim of the HI-5 program— they’re taxed more heavily. “The 14 senators who voted down Judge Leonard’s confirmation represent the height of hypocrisy, given that earlier this year they all voted for a resolution calling on me to appoint more women to the bench,” Lingle sniffed. She was referring to SR26, which “urges the Governor to use and consider gender equality when appointing judges.” Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings, who voted to approve Leonard, also referenced SR26, reportedly telling his female colleagues who voted for the resolution, “You have a chance today to achieve your goals.” (Speaking of hypocrisy, Hemmings voted against SR26.) Lost amid the squabbling and veiled accusations of sexism was any cogent analysis of Leonard’s qualifications and judicial style. Did all 14 of the Senators

a good legal mind. It requires the ability to manage and effectively administer the third branch of government.... I believe the Judiciary is at a crossroads. It needs an insightful, well-rounded, capable and proven leader. I know this is not an easy vote. However, after weighing the testimony from the hearing, speaking with others who called my office, came by or communicated with identification by e-mail, and more importantly after spending time reviewing Judge Leonard’s CV, work experiences and after having an in-depth discussion with her, I have concluded that she is indeed a fine ICA judge and we were correct to confirm her to that position. However, for the position of Chief Justice, she does not, at this time, have the requisite skills,

experiences, abilities and knowledge of the admin side of the equation to lead the Judiciary at this critical juncture.” Sexist! (To read the full text of Baker’s remarks, visit mauifeed.com.)

Council Punts On Election Reform Asking an elected official to change the system under which he or she was elected is a tall order. Too tall, apparently, for the Maui County Council, which voted 6-3 to send a redistricting proposal to the Charter Commission next year rather than putting the question to voters in November. Currently, Councilmembers from nine “residency areas” of vastly different size and population are elected by all county voters. Under a plan formulated by the West Maui Charter Working Group and introduced as a potential ballot question by Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson, the map would be redrawn with nine single-member districts of roughly equal population, and voters within the districts would vote only for their respective Council reps. Proponents say the system will benefit voters, who often don’t know enough about candidates from other parts of the county to make an informed decision, as well as candidates, who can save resources by running localized campaigns. Opponents, including some current Councilmembers, say it’ll disenfranchise rural outliers like Lanai and Molokai, which may end up with no representation on the Council. Of course, as attorney Lance Collins, who works with the West Maui Charter Working Group, pointed out during testimony, residents in those areas would actually make up a much larger percentage of the total votes in a single-member district than they currently do in a countywide election. Put simply: the current system guarantees Lanai and Molokai residents will sit on the Council, but it doesn’t guarantee they’ll be the candidates Lanai and Molokai

residents support. In the end, Councilmembers Gladys Baisa and Joe Pontanilla joined Johnson, but it wasn’t enough. The only other way to get a charter amendment on the ballot is to collect the signatures of 20 percent of registered voters, a huge task, especially this late in the game. Unless that happens, the soonest voters could have a say is 2012, and that’s only if the Charter Commission takes action, which is far from certain. Testifier Norm Bezane may have summed it up best: “Sometimes in our county, we have a tendency to study things to death.”

Recycling Rate Down, Fee Unchanged After climbing steadily since 2006, Hawaii’s recycling rate fell slightly last fiscal year according to figures released by the Department of Health (DOH). In 2009, the return rate for the state’s HI-5 program was 79 percent; in 2010, that number dropped to 76 percent. That’s still more than enough to trigger an automatic increase of the 1 cent “container fee,” a non-refundable tax charged on top of the 5 cent deposit. By law, if the return rate is above 70 percent, the container fee goes up half a cent. Basically, if a lot of people recycle their cans and bottles—the ostensible aim of the program—they’re taxed more heavily. OK, here’s the good news: per a DOH release, after “evaluation of the current deposit beverage special fund balance, and consultation with the legislative auditor, the director of health has determined that the container fee will remain at one cent per container.” Just don’t let that rate go above 80 percent and we should be fine. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1408c

Candidate Profiles

O

ver the next month we’ll examine the various state and county races, culminating in endorsements before the September 18 primary. This week, we look at the crowded contests for both Governor and Lieutenant Governor; for the first time in eight years, neither race features an incumbent.

GOVERNOR Name: NEIL ABERCROMBIE Party: Democrat Profile: During his nearly 20-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives, Abercrombie earned a reputation as a consistent liberal voice—pro-choice, progun control, opposed to the Iraq war. Since resigning in February to run for Governor (a decision for which he drew some heat), Abercrombie has made education the central plank of his platform, and recently picked up the endorsement of the Hawaii State Teachers Association. Web site: Neilabercrombie.com Name: DUKE AIONA Party: Republican Profile: A former city attorney and judge, Aiona pushes crime and public safety issues front and center. The two-term Lieutenant Governor also wears his religion proudly on his sleeve; in 2004 he famously told a prayer group that “Hawaii belongs to Jesus,” and he was ardently opposed to civil union bill HB444. Web site: Dukeaiona.com Name: JOHN CARROLL Party: Republican Profile: The only Republican challenging Aiona (the presumed and all-but-coronated nominee), Carroll, according to his official bio, moved to Hawaii pre-statehood to play college football, eventually graduating from UH Manoa with a degree in education. His positions are mostly boilerplate conservative— cut taxes, slash government spending, support small businesses and agriculture. He does espouse a desire to protect “our precious environment,” though he’s scant on details. Web site: Roll4carroll.com Name: TONY CLAPES Party: Nonpartisan Profile: A lawyer and “intellectual property consultant” who moved to Hawaii in 1998, Clapes—who touts himself as an “unpolitician”—is hoping that “with the public pretty much fed up with partisan politics, the chances are better that a nonpartison candidate free of the burden of party obligations will succeed.” Web site: Tonyclapes.net Name: DANIEL CUNNINGHAM

Party: Free Energy Profile: If the Free Energy Party— allegedly based on the ideas of enigmatic 19th century inventor Nikola Tesla—is looking for legitimacy, it may want to look further than Daniel Cunningham. Though Cunningham’s bio on the official party Web site is blank, a search of his name reveals that, in 2008, he came under investigation when a building he was managing collapsed, leaving some 50 people homeless according to a Honolulu Advertiser dispatch. There were also allegations that Cunningham—who previously ran for Mayor of Honolulu—“injected some of his tenants with a substance that he told them would cure ailments and prolong life.” Web site: Freeenergyparty.net Name: MUFI HANNEMANN Party: Democrat Profile: Hannemann, who cut short his second term as Mayor of Honolulu to run for Governor, has picked up a handful of key union endorsements, and according to some polls has a narrow lead over Abercrombie. His biggest Achilles’ heel may be the Honolulu rail system; Hannemann spearheaded the project, but as he left office it was in limbo (though on his Web site, under the heading “Promises Made, Promises Kept,” Hannemann optimistically claims that construction is “poised to begin”). Web site: Mufihannemann.com Name: PAUL MANNER Party: Nonpartisan Profile: Manner challenged Gov. Lingle in the Republican primary in 2006, finishing last in a field of four with less than 1 percent of the vote. Now he’s trying again as a nonpartisan candidate. Judging by how difficult it was to find more information about him, he’s unlikely to make a splash this time around, either. Web site: Unknown Name: THOMAS POLLARD Party: Nonpartisan Profile: A physician, Pollard is also trying to tap into people’s frustration with government, making that—more than any specific policy initiative—the centerpiece of his campaign. Web site: Tompollard4governor.com Name: ARTURO P. REYES Party: Democrat Profile: Reyes has four “likes” on his Facebook page as of this writing, suggesting he’s got some catching up to do if he hopes to unseat the frontrunners. But he’s undaunted, as this Facebook post (possibly) suggests: “Please do not be mislead by fallacious, speculative poll results. The Fallacy of Market Place, Bandwagon Rule, & Idol of the Trive is

Primitive and within our loins. Decide Wisely and let your conscious be your guide.” Web site: Facebook.com (search “Arturo P. Reyes”) Name: MILES SHIRATORI Party: Democrat Profile: Shiratori obviously enjoys running for office. In 1998 he ran for Governor as a Democrat; in 2004 he ran as a Republican for the District 2 Congressional seat; in 2008, he made a bid for Mayor of Honolulu. Yet despite his extensive campaign experience, we were unable to find an official Web site. Web site: Unknown Name: VAN TANABE Party: Democrat Profile: We’re just going to step back and let Van do the talking (via his blog): “As many of you may know ‘2010’ is an election year, and I am running for Governor. Back in 2006 I also ran for office and my slogan back then was ‘Want it Fix? Vote Tanabe 2006!’ Since nothing got better in the last 4 (8)years I could use the same slogan but 2010 doesn’t rhyme with ‘Fix’. So I’m going with ‘Back Again In 2010!’” Web site: Votetanabe.blogspot.com

LT. GOVERNOR Name: LYLA BERG Party: Democrat Profile: Berg’s background is in education (she was a teacher and administrator at Molokai Intermediate and High School, among other institutions) and, as a member of the state House, she served as vice-chair of the Education Committee. In 2008, Berg received a 5 out of 5 rating from Small Business Hawaii, and has also gotten high marks from the state Sierra Club for her environmental record. Web site: Lylaberg.com

debate over HB444 she revealed her true colors. “I am opposed to both civil unions and samesex marriage,” Finnegan wrote in a July Maui News viewpoint. “It is my firm belief that civil unions, as simply a contractual alternative to marriage, undermine the very institution that same-sex couples attempt to resemble.” Web site: Lynnfinnegan.com Name: STEVE HIRAKAMI Party: Democrat Profile: His profession is listed as “charter school principal,” but other than that we don’t know much about Hirakami, as he doesn’t appear to have an official campaign site. Web site: Unknown Name: GARY HOOSER Party: Democrat Profile: After cutting his teeth on the Kauai County Council, Hooser served eight years in the state Senate, ascending to the role of Majority Leader. He’s picked up endorsements from the Hawaii State Teachers Association, Hawaii Nurses Association and Progressive Democrats of Hawaii, among other groups. He’s also noted for his environmental record, earning ratings of between 86 and 92 percent from the Sierra Club. Web site: Garyhooser.com Name: LEONARD KAMA Party: Nonpartisan Profile: Again, no campaign Web site, so we can’t tell you much, other than that Kama is married, served on the Neighborhood Board Waianae for a year in the late ’90s and worked in the cruise industry, according to a brief KITV.com profile. Web site: Unknown

Name: ROBERT “BOBBY” BUNDA Party: Democrat Profile: Bunda served for 27 years in the state legislature, including a five-year stint as Senate President (making him the first Filipino American to head up any state legislative body). Bunda’s positions tend to fall in lockstep with the deeply entrenched, pro-union Democratic majority. He’s running on experience, but it’ll be up to voters to decide if that’s an asset or a deterrent. Web site: Robertbunda.com

Name: JON RIKI KARAMATSU Party: Democrat Profile: A year after earning his law degree on the Mainland in 2001, Karamatsu returned to Hawaii and was elected to the state House from the 41st District. He rose up the ranks, chairing the Judiciary Committee, but was also the subject of controversy in 2007 when he was arrested for DUI after crashing his car into a concrete overpass pillar in the wee hours of the morning. Karamatsu later apologized for the incident, calling it a “serious error in judgement.” Web site: Jonriki.wordpress.com

Name: LYNN FINNEGAN Party: Republican Profile: Having served as Minority Leader of the state House, Finnegan is one of the few rising stars in the Hawaii GOP. Her platform mostly parrots expected talking points—lower taxes, government that “learns to live within its means,” investment in small businesses and alternative energy—but during the recent

Name: ADRIENNE KING Party: Republican Profile: The only other Republican in the race, Finnegan is an attorney who served for decades as a prosecutor and in private practice on Oahu. She previously ran for the state House and is actively involved in the Republican Party, though, according to her official bio, » Continued on pg.9

SPIN CYCLE Unsweet Relief... This week, Hawaiian Electric Industries (parent company of HECO and MECO) announced a second-quarter profit of $29.3 million. That’s almost twice as much as HEI made in the second quarter of 2009. So what drove the increase? “The primary drivers were rate relief...as well as savings from fuel efficiency,” according to an August 9 company release. The second bit is self-explanatory, but what’s “rate relief”?

Per the financial dictionary at thefreedictionary.com: rate relief An action taken to allow a regulated company, such as a utility, to charge higher rates (that is, the prices it charges its customers) so that it can generate greater revenues. Public utilities frequently seek rate relief by filing a request for rate increases with public regulatory bodies. CHILD UNSUPPORT Shirley Anderson, 71, is suing her son Ken, 46, in Vancouver, British Columbia, for parental support—even though she and his father abandoned him when he was 15. An archaic 1922 law in British Columbia obligates adult children to support “dependent” parents, and in 2000, Shirley sued, demanding $350 per month each from Ken, who is a trucker, and his four siblings (three of whom were at least 17 when the parents left and not considered “abandoned”). A judge awarded token interim support pending a final resolution, which after years of paperwork and delay was to come in early August but has been postponed once again.

HOOKED ON A TECHNICALITY A team of anglers from Hatteras, North Carolina, had first place wrapped up in the prestigious Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in June, salivating over their $1,231,575 prize money (including a bonus for single-largest catch), when judges discovered that one member of the Hatteras crew, Peter Wann, had not gotten a $30 North Carolina coastal recreational fishing license before their boat pushed off that day. Under the rules, the entire team was disqualified, and the runner-up, from Cape Carteret, North Carolina, got the money.

THEY DON’T MAKE DRUG LORDS LIKE THEY USED TO (1) Widely feared Jamaican drug kingpin Christopher “Dudus” Coke was arrested in June and extradited to New York City after being picked up wearing women’s clothes and a 1970s-style Afro wig too small for his head (with a pink wig on standby). The Jamaica Observer reported that Coke wet his pants as he was arrested. (2) Longtime South African drug lord Fadwaan “Fat” Murphy, speaking at a bail hearing in January in Cape Town, disclosed that he was born a hermaphrodite and has a separate identity (“Hilary”), which became relevant when arresting officers discovered that Murphy was wearing a strap-on penis. Nonetheless, he insists he is a man: “I look like a man. I talk like a man. I am a man.”

CLOSET CASE A “new high point” in electoral politics in Philadelphia occurred this spring, according to the publisher of Philadelphia Gay News, when openly gay state Rep. Babette Josephs “outed” her primary opponent Gregg Kravitz as straight. According to Josephs, the heterosexual Kravitz was posing in Josephs’s gay-friendly 182nd District as bi-sexual. Kravitz said he is “attracted” to both men and women and found Josephs’s comments offensive.

LUCKED OVER (1) Recently, while visiting her childhood home of Bishop, Texas, Joan Ginther won a Texas lottery drawing for the fourth time, taking home a $10 million first prize to lift her career Texas lottery winnings

to $20.4 million. (By then, she had already moved to Las Vegas.) (2) At the other end of luck, British farm worker Mick Wilary, 58, was hospitalized in April after machinery crushed both his legs. According to the Daily Telegraph, Wilary has also had his ankles broken (twice), ribs cracked, finger cut off, head split open, collarbone broken and fingers broken, and been stabbed and been frequently kicked by livestock.

A LITTLE TOO FAR OUTSIDE THE BOX (1) Northern Ireland farmer William Taylor introduced his prototype Livestock Power Mill recently and claimed that the world’s 1.3 billion cattle, using treadmills for eight hours a day, could produce 6 percent of the world’s electricity requirement. (The cow must keep walking to avoid sliding down an incline.) (2) California gubernatorial candidate Douglas Hughes proposed this year to solve the state’s child-molestation problem by developing an island 30 miles off the Santa Barbara coast to contain the state’s pedophiles, who would, according to The Daily Caller, “write their own constitution, build their own infrastructure and maintain a society.”

KICKING THEM WHILE THEY’RE DOWN North Korea’s World Cup adventure began auspiciously with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to a superior Brazil team, leading the government to release photographs of the North Korean coach supposedly receiving longdistance telepathic strategy signals during the game from Dear Leader Kim Jong-Il. With the country’s hopes up, the team was embarrassed in two subsequent games and dispatched from the tournament. Back home in July, the players were paraded into the People’s Palace of Culture in Pyongyang, where for six hours, they were publicly denounced and taunted. Coach Kim Jonghuh is said to fear an eventual violent end.

INCIDENT TWO MONTHS AGO, RET. COL. ANN WRIGHT OF OAHU WAS INVOLVED IN A SHOWDOWN WITH ISRAELI FORCES THAT LEFT NINE DEAD. NOW SHE’S BACK IN HAWAII, AND READY TO TELL HER SIDE OF THE STORY

T

his week, Ret. Col. Ann Wright returned home to Oahu, a little more than two months after she was taken into custody by Israeli soldiers in an incident that left nine dead, including one American. Wright—a former state department official who resigned on the eve of the Iraq war—was part of a flotilla trying to bring supplies to the embargoed Gaza Strip. Even as the investigation into the incident continues, she’s already trying to raise money for a return trip (learn more at ustogaza.org). We spoke with Wright via phone ahead of an upcoming Maui appearance, and found out about her arrest, the aftermath and why she’s still waiting for a call from Hillary Clinton. »

10 August 12, 2010

What have the last couple months been like for you? We were in an Israeli jail for about two days; I got out on June 3. We were flown to Istanbul on Turkish airliners, stayed a day in Istanbul and then the Turkish government paid for the return of all us internationals to wherever we needed to go. So I’ve been back in the United States for almost two months, on the Mainland.

Describe your arrest and the events leading up to it. We had been at sea for three days by the time the flotilla finally formed off the southwest coast of Cypress and headed for Gaza. We took off at about four in the afternoon on May 30 and within about twelve hours, at four the next morning, the Israeli commandos had begun attacking each of the six ships to board them forcefully. I was initially on the Challenger 2, a small boat, then was put on the Mavi Marmara, the large, 600-person Turkish ferry boat. Then, just as we were leaving the meeting place, I was put back on one of the smaller ships so that three German parliamentarians and a Scottish parliamentarian could go on board. About midnight, we started getting radio calls from the Israeli Navy saying, you’re approaching a security zone, you must turn back. And each one of the captains of the ship would explain, we’re here to break what we feel is an illegal siege and blockade of Gaza; we’re unarmed civilian ships, we have no weapons on board, we’re carrying construction materials [and] medical supplies and we’re going to proceed. At around four in the morning, the lights that we’d been seeing in the distance off the stern of the ship came up to us, and the [Israeli] commando boats started shooting percussion grenades into each of the boats. We were about 150 yards off the port stern of the Marvi Marmara and saw the commando boats going up to its stern, shooting percussion grenades into all levels, with great noise and lots of smoke. We saw people on the ship using fire hoses, pouring salt water down on the commandos to try to get them off the stern of the ship. And then the captain of the Marmara and the captain of our [ship] had a discussion, and since ours was

the speediest boat they decided we should try to go further ahead. That lasted about 15 minutes, until a large light started looming from the port side of us, and came in front of us. It was a big [Israeli] Navy ship, and our captain had to pull the power and stop, because we weren’t there to ram one of their ships. We were instantly boarded by commandos from both sides. They also used the percussion grenades, blowing out windows and doors; glass was flying everywhere. We had women along the railing to yell at them that we were in international waters and they had no right to board our ship, that we were unarmed civilians. They of course just ran over the women, shooting paint bullets and hitting one of the women in the face, barely missing her eye but hitting her nose; there was blood going everywhere. They used stun guns, tasers, and within 20 seconds they were in control of our

shown here on American TV that was shot by Israeli defense forces certainly showed passengers taking sticks and metal bars that they had broken off the railings and beating up commandos. I don’t [condone] that at all, but if indeed it’s true that people had already been shot, I can see how it happened. However, the Isreali military film doesn’t show how that ended. My understanding is that about 10 seconds after the tape ends, the captain of the ship and the director of IHH [a Turkish human-rights group] came out of the wheelhouse with bullhorns, telling passengers to stop beating up commandos. They then had a Turkish doctor take the commandos down to a first aid station, treat them and return them to the Israelis. In the end, there were nine people who had been shot dead by Israeli commandos, with 35 bullets found in the nine bodies, five of them shot in

too pleased with commandos shooting up the ship and trying to board it. The civilian side of the Israeli government is just starting its investigation; I saw today that Prime Minister Netanyahu had been interviewed. The United Nations has now formed a panel that is only going to review the investigations done by the nations involved. The UN Security Council actually ordered the UN to conduct its own investigation, but [Secretary-General] Ban Ki-Moon has only mandated that they review the reports sent in by Israel and Turkey. I don’t agree with that at all. A third party needs to look at all the evidence, from both the passengers and the Israeli military. But of course the passengers’ evidence is all in the hands of the Israeli government, because they took all of our cameras, cell phones, computers. None of that has been returned to us.

How do you feel about the United States’ response? I’m flabbergasted and heartbroken that the Obama Administration has chosen to protect the wrongdoings of the Israeli government, as virtually every past administration has done. It was a pitiful response. The United States says that the attack on these flotillas that were in international waters, 70 miles off Gaza, was “regrettable.” Yet when they talk about Helen Thomas and her very poor choice of words [denouncing Israel], that was “reprehensible.” One would think that the murder of nine people would be reprehensible and [Thomas’s] words regrettable. I demanded meetings at the state department when I got back, and had one meeting with an office director. I presented them a letter for Secretary of State Hillary and they promised to forward it. Here it is, eight weeks later, and I haven’t heard one peep. ■

“The women who were working in the first aid station said that at times they were up to their ankles in blood.” ship. It wasn’t like it was a major military operation. I could have taken over the ship in 20 seconds myself.

I know you weren’t on the Mavi Marmara, the boat where the fatalities occurred, but what do you know about the altercation between the Israeli soldiers and the people on board that may not have been reported in the mainstream media? [According to some accounts] the firing of live ammunition [by Israelis] started as the helicopters were hovering above the ship. If that’s true then one could anticipate that as these young commandos started repelling out of the helicopters that they were going to be met by people who were very angry about being shot. The footage that was

the head. The 19-year-old American citizen has five bullets in him, including two in his head. Over 50 other people were seriously injured with live ammunition. The women who were working in the first aid station who were in prison with us 24-hours later said that at times they were up to their ankles in blood.

Are there ongoing investigations? If so, what’s the status? Well, there needs to be a truly independent investigation, but unfortunately it’s not happening. The Israeli military has already done its investigation, which absolved its forces of any wrongdoing. They do acknowledge there was a lack of intelligence, or poor interpretation of the intelligence. They seem to be surprised that 450 Arab Muslim men who were on board a ship might not be

s their recent win in Best of Maui for Best Resort shows, the Westin properties go the extra mile to cater to kama‘aina. My recent visit to check out Pulehu, An Italian Grill revealed an array of amazing options for residents, from the free valet parking to the the 50-percent-off nights (Thursdays after 8pm). You probably don’t associate going out to dinner with a trip to a resort, but sometimes enjoying a meal is about the whole experience—and the package offered at Pulehu is just right. Reservations are recommended to get the best seat in the house, which would be along the koi pond and water garden in the open-air dining room. Sunset and ocean views peek out at you from beyond the buildings; the Italian music adds a nice touch. The restaurant is modern, with simple but comfortable dark, natural wicker chairs and dark wood, glasstopped tables. The understated elegance lets you focus on the food. Pulehu has two formats for their dinner service: on Thursday through Sunday you can order from their Italian menu, on Monday they do an Italian all-you-can-eat buffet. The menu is impressive, a balance of traditional pasta with inventive Italian dishes. It’s almost impossible to avoid starting with the antipasti and a cocktail. The rich rustic crab dip, designed by Chef Brian Reilly, begs to be ordered and enjoyed with an adult beverage while you peruse the rest of your meal plan. It’s served in a black cast-iron pan and the texture and taste are reminiscent of crab dynamite. Pulehu’s signature cocktail,

the strawberry limoncello martini, pairs well with the first course. Their mai tais are also spectacular, and they have three different specialty styles to choose from. As you move on with your meal, remember no one is rushing you. This is Mediterranean-style dining, in several courses. The menu features a wine pairing suggestion for each dish. The wine list is extensive, but a great way to get familiar is their offering of flights of wine, Ferrari

Âť Continued from pg.13 Chef Milliet has focused on building relationships and connections with local food producers and is extremely proud of Pulehu’s close connection to Hirabara Farms on the island of Hawaii. “We are lucky to work with them so closely, we have have the freshest greens, picked immediately on request and air-shipped over,â€? he says. That means the greens’ delicate flavors are at their oldest while on your plate. Chef Milliet is Swiss-trained in the culinary arts, having been born and raised in Switzerland. He joined the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort with experience from Hyatt and restaurants like the Tower Club 300 and The Cliff House in California, and most recently served as executive sous chef of the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. His vision for the entree portion of the menu features pasta speciales, where you’ll find zucca ravioli, a pocket of butternut-squash filling enclosed in an envelope of homemade sundried tomato pasta, topped with infused sage brown butter, cranberries and macadamia nuts. It’s a symphony of flavors and textures that plays perfectly together. Several of their pastas can be enjoyed in a full or half order. The grigliato features grilled entrees like the filet mignon, veal parmigiano and the risotto crusted pesce. The risotto, served over roasted veggies and with a pesto butter sauce, is surprising as a crisp crust around the flaky fish, but it succeeds in keeping the fish succulent and adding flavor dimensions I hadn’t tried before. In the Pulehu classicos there is a mix of highlighted dishes, like the Kona lobster and braised shortribs. The Kona lobster is served with a nice plain flat

noodle and roasted veggies, allowing the lobster to be the focal point of that dish. The buffet features an amazing assortment of highlights from the regular menu, plus unique additions. The greens come two ways in the antipasti portion of the buffet, chopped romaine or mixed greens. You can prepare a classic Caesar—their dressing is outstanding—or just sample the fresh greens. They have added platters and bowls of salami, capicola, prosciutto, roasted bell peppers and olive tapenade, fresh mozzarella and crackers. The roasted tomato soup was delightful and the mac and cheese, featuring housemade cheese sauce, is surprisingly spectacular. At the buffet you’ll have the chance to sample most of their pastas: ravioli with pesto, spaghettini, alfredo, Italian sausage-baked penne and lasagna. The shrimp scampi orzo is not on their regular menu, but it’s a standout at the buffet. Eggplant parmesan is one of my favorite dishes and it’s done exceptionally well here. The lasagna features spinach, Italian sausage, mushrooms and pomodoro covered in cheese and baked to a golden brown. Pulehu recently won as Maui’s best-kept secret in the Aipono awards, but with their kama‘aina specials and palate-pleasing offerings, the secret is sure to get out. â–

he good folks at Capische? are going all-out for one of their own, hosting a benefit for Chef Duane Tsuburaya this Sunday, August 15, starting at 2:30pm and going ’til 7:30pm. In 2009, Chef Tsuburaya was diagnosed with Stage III Follicular Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which is uncurable, but manageable with treatment. The event, on the Hotel Wailea lawn, will feature entertainment all day from Arise, Unified Soul, Derrick Sebastian and Moku. The fabulous all-you-caneat Capische? buffet is going to be an awesome sight, augmented by a sushi station with classic maki and inari. The slider station is going off with lamb sliders featuring shaved Maui onions, Sicilian spiced ahi with roasted pepper aioli and, for the vegetarians, grilled portabello mushrooms with rosemary aioli. Some of the highlights in the buffet will be lasagna Bolognese made from a ragu of housemade pork sausage, beef and veal with locally grown tomato marinara made from scratch; Chef Kris Ethredges’ famous traditional adobo chicken made from the classic, simple ingredients: garlic, bay leaves, shoyu and black pepper; and shrimp carbonara served with jumbo prawns, house-cured pancetta and penne pasta. At this point you may not care about the salads but I’m excited about the Caesar, made from locally grown romaine lettuce from Mike Makoi Farms and featuring dressing with dark and white balsamic. The tomato caprese is made from locally grown tomatoes, Italian-imported bufula mozzarella with Maui onions and a coriander vinaigrette.

now, I’d say. Is there anything you’ve ever said that you wish you could take back? Of what you’ve said that’s stirred controversy, what are you most proud of? I don’t know that I’ve tallied the costs like that—nothing jumps out at me that I wish I hadn’t said, and by the same token, nothing seems to pop at me that I’m especially proud of. It’s not something I sit and take notes about or even think about that much. It’s not that planned to me.

In times like these your wishes could be carried out through a previously signed document known as an Advance Directive. This document lists who can make healthcare decisions for you and the level of care you want when things seem dire. Help your Family and Loved ones, as well as your doctors understand your wishes. You’ve been criticized for playing to stereotypes. Here in Hawaii—from grass skirts to mai tais—we’re about as stuffed with stereotypes as an apple in the mouth of a pig on a spit. What “Hawaiian” stereotype are you anticipating most? You know what, I want to be called a “haole”! Wouldn’t that be interesting? What can I say about the Hawaiians? They only have 13 letters in their alphabet so I’m pretty sure even I would have gotten an A in English. Your CNN program D.L. Hughley Breaks the News seemed like a natural fit in this Daily Show era, but it didn’t last. Any plans for a revival? With what I do, I don’t really have an overall plan. Those kind of things, TV shows, radio shows, they’re kind of catch-can. I just keep doing what it is I do, and see what happens. Who’s on your clown list these days? I think Sarah Palin is a clown. I think Brett Favre is acting like a clown, and LeBron James. They’re topping the clown list right

You’ve been quoted as saying, “If you’re an entertainer on the stage, I don’t think that you can be happy and comfortable in your career. I just don’t.” Can you elaborate on that? Anything that feels comfortable makes you lazy. Look at our country. Comfort becomes an insidious disease and robs you of any potential greatness. What’s comfortable is usually also bad for you: comfort food, comfort chairs. When you want to be stronger you stretch your mind, your body. Comfort is akin to atrophy, so no, I don’t ever like to feel complacent onstage. Thus far, what’s been your biggest highlight of 2010? Well, I just had a chance to tour a bunch of military bases and I have to say, it has been one of the most life-changing experiences. To see those young kids in tough situations, fighting for a way of life that many haven’t had a chance yet to even experience—that was very eye-opening for me. ■

Better Off ‘Dead’ The guys behind our quirky little comic make a quirky little book. And d you should read it publications, impressive considering most cash-strapped newspapers (also known as: all newspapers) are cutting comics (along with reporters, copy editors and foreign bureaus) to save money. Recently, the guys behind Open Letters— Jory John and Avery Monsen—wrote and illustrated a book called All My Friends Are Dead, which was published by Californiabased Chronicle Books. They sent us a copy, and we thought it was hilarious. So hilarious, in fact, that we decided to ask Jory and Avery a few silly questions about it. If you want to read the book for yourself, it’s available on Amazon or at chroniclebooks.com. You can check out more of Jory and Avery’s stuff at bigstonehead.net.

A

few months ago, we started running a onepanel comic called Open Letters (check it out on page 8). Since then it’ss been picked up by numerous other it

How did this strange little book come to be? Sit back and relax. Take off your coat and get comfortable. This is a true story, which occurred over a period of about seven years: First off, we bought a button-maker, because we decided that the quickest way to become rich would be by selling $1 buttons to our friends. We got a bunch of old magazines, which we proceeded to cut up and turn into wearable buttons with snarky little phrases on them. At some point, we found fou a dinosaur pictured in a National Geogr Geographic and we quickly wrote, “All My Friend Friends Are Dead” on it and gave it to some guy st standing nearby, who liked it. Later, we de decided to take the dinosaur and phrase and pu put it on a black and white T-shirt. We pr printed 50 and they sold out within a coup couple of weeks, which was surprising. So we printed up some more, this time in colo color and in different designs, milking the idea id for (what we thought, at least) was all al its worth. The shirts kept selling and this th improved both our self-esteem and PayPal P accounts. At one point, we decided decid to expand our clothing line and considered consi printing up a shirt with a tree, reading readi “All My Friends Are Endtables.” Wee ultim ultimately concluded that this idea didn’t really work out of context, though—that is, th the shirt-wearer would need to be standing by somebody wearing an “All stand My Friends F Are Dead” shirt for it to make sense, sens or at least for it to be funny—so instead inst of creating another shirt around the idea, we went ahead and made a 12-page 12DIY mini-book at Kinko’s in the “All My Friends Are...” theme. First page: pag a dinosaur, proclaiming, “All My Friends Fri Are Dead.” Next page: a dodo bird, bir saying the same thing. Third page, an old man saying, “Most of my friends are dead.” And so on. The laugh-to-page ratio rat was, we thought, pretty darn good. d.

Twelve laughs in total. We started selling ng this book in a couple places, includingg our Web site and a paper goods store in n ly San Francisco, where it was fortuitously discovered by an editor from Chroniclee Books, a fine publisher of fine things, who later approached us about turningg our mini-book into a 96-page maxibook. We said yes on the spot. The rest,, including this interview, is history.

What’s your target demographic? The elderly. Just kidding. Definitely not the elderly. Probably toddlers. Kidding again! n! But seriously: our target demographic for this book is mostly convicted felons between the ages of 35 and 42. (God, it’s t’s exhausting talking to us.) We tried to think of a single word to describe your humor and couldn’t. Can you? Enchanted. Or possibly: enchanting? How confident are you that yours is the first book to feature a one-sided friendship between an end table and a tree? ‘Splosions!

Use your words, boys.

All-star action flick a big, flaming ball of fun The Expendables

★★★★★

Rated R/103 min.

T

he first R-rated movie I ever saw was Die Hard 2, which my dad took me to see the day it opened at the Lahaina Cinemas. Some fathers and sons bond by sharing a beer, going hunting, attending a monster truck show or, I dunno, knitting a sweater. To this day, I love it when my dad takes me to the movies, but there was something special about the day he took me to see Bruce Willis wipe out hundreds of terrorists and blow up an airport. Yes, it was ridiculous, but I was thrilled out of my mind and, when it was over, Dad and I were giddy. Twenty years later, Willis is playing a shady operative who hires the Expendables, a close-knit group of mercenary soldiers, to partake in a deadly mission, wipe out an evil fighting force and mostly just blow stuff up. Our heroes are played by Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, UFC

Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote and directed. As a movie critic, it’s my job to tell you that the dialogue has Stallone’s stamp of macho corniness and that the film is incredibly silly. On the other hand, my inner 13-year-old wants me to shut up, lose the attitude and admit that this has the biggest bams and booms of the season. We’re not just talking explosions, these are ‘splosions! Whereas The A-Team had a similar setup but was as much a parody as a muscular summer event, Stallone doesn’t wink at the audience (aside from a few one-liners) and instead has made the real deal—a fanboypleasing, a testosterone-fueled extravaganza. Stallone takes his familiar themes—underdog against the world, good versus evil, honor and sacrifice over fear and cowardice—very seriously. His personal obsessions with soldiers of fortune, exotic women and tattoos are also on display. At the same time, while it’s all quite violent, the gore never hits the outrageous level of Rambo. The toughest

scene to watch is a mercifully brief depiction of water boarding. It’s a pleasure just to watch this cast interact, despite the fact that many of them lack genuine acting skills. The charismatic Statham and a wily Rourke come off best. Lundgren has the most interesting character but he must have pulled an Ivan Drago and KO’d his acting coach. Li makes the most of his scenes, Crews’s gun makes a bigger impression than his role and Couture has one amusing bit where he explains his cauliflower ear. Stallone acts as the master of ceremonies, clearly relishing a chance to do what he does best alongside some of the genre’s most iconic figures. There’s a highly touted scene early on

where three of the biggest action movie stars in the world share the screen; I won’t give it away, especially if you haven’t seen the trailers, but will only say that it was such a fun, if brief, event to watch. So are the action sequences, the best of which has Stallone being dragged outside a plane, followed by a jaw-dropping combination of stunts, explosions and Statham’s sheer awesomeness. It’s far from perfect and occasionally stupid, but it lives up to its stunt casting, which is saying a lot. Just don’t sit too close to the screen—the ‘splosions may singe your eyebrows. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1408f

Picks

This Week's Picks Back to Da Kine Saturday (Aug 14), Hotel Molokai, Kaunakakai, 4-11pm, free • Friday & Saturday (Aug 20 & 21), Hotel Lanai, Lanai City, 4-11pm, free As with going to the beach, we sometimes need to remind ourselves that if we live in Hawaii, but don’t visit our sibling isles, what’s the point? In the way that a nice day with nothing to do might lend itself to an impromptu shoreline excursion, all it takes to island hop is the right ash of inspiration. Enter the 7th Annual Molokai and Lanai Film Festivals (part of MauiFEST), which are darn good excuses to check out the rest of the county. This Saturday (August 14), at Hotel Molokai, the Friendly Isle festival will feature (in order of screening, beginning at sunset): Massacre at Kaupoa Beach; Journey to Kalaupapa; Kaho‘olawe, An Island Healing; Hana Surf Girls; Pidgin: The Voice of Hawai‘i; A Legacy; Stones; He Hawai‘i Mau; I Scream, Floats & Sundays; Kava Kultcha; Malama Haloa: Protecting the Taro; Holomua: Red Hibiscus; and Heart Strings: The Story of the Kamaka Ukulele. Plus, entertainment by Brother Noland, Bradda Francis Koahou (named MauiFEST’s “Entertainer of the Yearâ€?), Calvin Hoe, Molokai’s own Lono and Hula Halau Ka Malo o Kalani. Further, Hoe will lead nose ute and pu workshops for all interested participants, and vendors/community groups will host a bevy of booths full of arts, crafts and ono grinds. Next week Saturday (August 21), at Hotel Lanai, the aforementioned, uniquely Hawaiian films will be showcased on the sixth-largest Hawaiian isle, in addition to other special premieres. Noland, Koahou and Hoe will also perform, joining popular local band Polihua (and all the other good stuff, of course, including pre-party happenings on Friday). But what’s the best way to get from here to there? Ferries between Maui and both islands are available with daily departures from Lahaina—across the Kolohi Channel to Kaunakakai Harbor on the Molokai Ferry (molokaiferry.com) and across the Auau Channel to Manele Harbor on Lanai Expeditions (go-lanai.com). Kama‘aina rates and package deals are available from both companies, and a round-trip ticket will run you just $50-$80 (plus taxes and applicable fuel surcharges). While these boat rides are beautiful (especially during early routes, when the sun is just over its hale) and inexpensive, the maritime adventure will cost you more than a couple hours of your time. Flights might sap a tad more dough (to help with your search, use airport codes MKK for Molokai and LNY for Lanai), but with airtime under 30 minutes, you’ll be there (and back) before you know it. mauifest.net / hotelmolokai.com / hotellanai.com

Here Comes the Story of the Hurricane

Motown Royalty

Saturday (August 14), Queen Kaahumanu Center, 10am-2pm, free

Sunday (August 15), 7pm, Events Lawn, MACC, $35 / $50 / $65 / $85 / $125

Here are a couple cool hurricane factoids, compliments of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA): Hurricanes have “a well defined circulation and sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher.â€? And, interestingly, “the Mayan storm god was named Hunraken, [and] a god considered evil by the Taino people of the Caribbean was called Huracan.â€? More disconcerting than interesting is the fact that the question, “Why don’t we destroy tropical cyclones by nuking them?â€? appears on NOAA’s online Hurricane FAQ page. (Frequently? Really?!) Fortunately, here in Hawaii—where the tropics forgo the traditional four seasons for our own unique few, like “whaleâ€? and “hurricaneâ€? (June 1 through November 30)—we know how to appropriately ready ourselves for the worst kinds of weather. Or do we? Even for preparedness pros, a refresher is always helpful. The Department of Health is sponsoring their 4th Annual Hurricane Expo this Saturday, and—among many helpful hints—recommends that individuals, families and businesses review their emergency preparedness plans annually, and update “Go-Kitsâ€? by replenishing supplies and medications past their expiration dates. Joining the DOH are co-sponsors Maui County Health Volunteers (a Medical Reserve Corps unit), the Emergency Preparedness Branch of the Maui District Health Office, the Pacific Radio Group and the Maui County Civil Defense Agency (along with numerous other participating organizations), all of which will be at the ready during this event, to offer practical ideas for keeping your ‘ohana safe and sound. There will even be a free rafe for those neat, crank-powered ashlight/radios. And who knows? You might meet new friends with whom to trade your “I Survived Inikiâ€? milkcovers and memorabilia (I’ve still got mine). 243-8660

If funky doo-wop were a dish, it’d definitely be a dessert. And if that’s so, the two historic Motown acts headlining this Sunday at the MACC are not mere toppings, they’re the main scoop. The Temptations (a 1960 “super group merger between The Primes and The Distants) and The Four Tops (originally The Four Aims, composed of friends from Michigan’s Pershing and Northern high schools), both got their start in Detroit during the birth of Motown. With innumerable hits that have spanned the decades, these groups are among the most successful in music history. But have all these guys really been rockin’ for half a century? Well, not exactly. Here’s the skinny: The Temptations, during their “Classic Five era, featured Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams and David Ruffin. Today, Williams is the only original member remaining, with Ron Tyson,Terry Weeks, Joe Herndon and Bruce Williamson (all joining the group since the ’90s) completing the modern lineup. As with The Temptations, The Four Tops have but one surviving original—Abdul “Duke Fakir—and Roquel Payton, Theo Peoples and Ronne McNeir fill in for members who have since passed. But I digress. These groups are so beloved, I think fans (past, present and future) will agree they’d love to see them continue on for another 50 years. The important thing is to bring along your boogie shoes and bring your weekend to a soulfully sweet close. 242-7469, mauiarts.org

“@hodgman: I tire of the term ‘celebrity.’ We are no longer celebrating them but ritually burning them in efďŹ gy‌ like they deserve.â€? (via Twitter)

G

iven the ol‘ “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay hereâ€? prompt, the remnants of Bubba Gump’s ofďŹ cial Maui Celebrity Series after-party took to the sidewalks last Friday. A baker’s dozen clung around Tom Green, snapping smart-phone photos and tossing their adoring quips at the former MTV star. The mass meandered within a 20-yard radius on Front Street—a disjointed, inebriated parade. “Man, this is weird,â€? a woman turned to me and said. She looked disgusted. “Isn’t this weird?â€? Indeed—even for a situation surrounding Tom Green, who works to embody weird—it was odd. Aren’t we on Maui? What happened to our rep for leaving famous folks alone (or at least being a little cooler around them)? Sure, Green had earned the attention with his non-stop funny show at the Maui Theatre, yet I couldn’t help but feel bad for the guy. Because really, when the show is said and done, dude just wants to put his one nut to no ka oi use; and thwarting those plans were “fans,â€? from a grass mat-wielding guy who smelled like poo to a douchey dude shouting, “Drinks! Drinks!â€? (but not actually buying drinks). It’s swell that Green obliged his fans as much as he did, but had he instead galloped off into the night with the cute girl(s) he’d been chatting up in the corner, that would’ve been ďŹ ne by me. Maybe it’s just my hometown pride talking, but there’s no better place than the 808 to get lei’d and have a ball.

P

erhaps even worse than the crowd Green faced in the street was the skimpy crowd that showed up for his Maui gig. It doesn’t seem like it’d be hard to ďŹ ll (or come closer to ďŹ lling) the 680seat venue. OK, so Green’s been out of the limelight a while, and maybe his humor’s not for everyone. But Mos Def, who headlined the following night, also played to a lot of empty seats. We’re an Oahu-afterthought for most acts; you’d think more people would jump at the few chances we get to see big names. With Mos, perhaps it’s a case of a star’s power only going so far. Given the premium ticket prices, last-

minute postponement and, perhaps, the bad taste still left in the mouths of those burned by the November 2007 “Mos Def debacleâ€? (where— through no fault of Mos’s—promoters at Liquids Nightclub in Kihei, formerly Hapa’s, took the money and ran, leaving a $70-plus void in the pockets of some pretty pissed-off patrons), there may be a bit of Def disillusionment festering on-isle. But Mos’s artistry is formidable enough to stand against even that history (and the fact that under-21 ticket holders were turned away at the door, and that the audience was herded into the theater incrementally, as if through locks at the Panama Canal, and that there was no opening act, just canned music over the sound check, and with Mos being late to the gig...OK, I’ll stop.) But one thing Mos is no match for? Maui’s LC. An alert reader left us a voicemail message pointing out that in last week’s Picks, I was incorrect in recommending people bring universally-practical towels to mop up their dance sweat (a reference to Mos’s role in The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy) as there is NO DANCING allowed at the Maui Theatre. Touche. Promoter Brian Evans was met with a chorus of boos when he requested that, if we must dance, we conďŹ ne ourselves to our seats (and that the uniformed ofďŹ cers guarding the door and anking the stage would see to it). Despite whatever weirdness, the Mos Def show was worth waiting for. Whenever he helmed his humble drum kit—for songs like “Quiet Dog (Bite Hard),â€? off his latest, The Ecstatic—the air was alive with beautiful raw beats that begged to be danced to, Footloose-esque regulations be damned.

I

n the end, I suppose, I shouldn’t feel bad for celebs who face empty seats—they’ll live. And maybe I should forgive Mauians, both those who didn’t show up and those who got a little too enthused. Wouldn’t want to analyze a fun weekend to death. P.S. I did, in fact, analyze this fun weekend to death. For more rants and raves, visit mauifeed.com/kulakid.

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) The superficial can matter. However, it shouldn’t outweigh deeper concerns; if you’re letting someone’s unibrow or love handles get in the way of your connection to them, you’re simply being too shallow. That doesn’t mean that you need to immediately love those imperfections, though. Perhaps over time you’ll learn to adorethem, orperhapstheysimplyneedtobecorrected(anhourwiththetweezers oracasualgymhabitshoulddothetrick).Appropriateresponsestosomethingyou’re not crazy about: ignore it or embrace it. Rejecting someone over it would be shamefully inappropriate, though—so don’t.

QUIZunderstood answers 1. A.

SIGN

AGE LANGU

2. Charles Ota; B. 3. Necker (named for Jacques Necker)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Don’t drop hints. They’ll fall on deaf ears and get swept under the rug. Now is not the time for subtlety. Be bold and direct without being hostile or defensive, and simply state the reality of the situation, and ask for what you need. This isn’t something that necessarily comes naturally to you, but luckily you have some excellent examples of how to approach situations this way, in the form of exceptionally bold and forthright friends. Look to these inspiring companions and emulate the best of what they’ve got to offer. I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleased by the results.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) It’s a small world, and about to get a little smaller. To some extent, you like to allow a bit of separation between different aspects of your life. Occasionally, however, they’re bound to collide and you’ll end up socializing with people from the office, fooling around with someone from church, or anonymously cybering with your second cousin. Try not to be too embarrassed or freaked when these juxtapositions happen. Embrace it, own it, laugh about it—whatever works. But denying it, hiding it, or running away from it wouldn’t help you much—so avoid those reactions whenever possible.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Compromise is not your strong suit. You’re about as stubborn as they get, and this is further compounded by your tastes; often, compromises are watered-down versions of the situation, which have lost anything that might have once compelled you. You’re drawn to the dramatic, passionate and intense, and the middle ground rarely has any of these qualities. However, please recognize that sometimes you need to go there anyway. In the big picture, backing down once in a while will ultimately lead to more of the excitement you crave. This, my dear, is one of those times—so in the name of the intensity you desire, chill out and bend for once.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I tend to think, “better late than never,” but someone is likely to advise you the opposite this week: better never than late. Did you miss your window of opportunity? Somebody thinks so, but that doesn’t necessarily make it so. It’s true, you let the best moment pass you by, either through bad luck or a simple loss of nerve. It might also be true that no matter what you try now, it won’t work. However, even if that’s the case, you have nothing to lose by giving it a go; at the very least it’ll be good practice at jumping into action, so that the next time a golden window of opportunity presents itself, you won’t miss it.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Giving someone tips on how to be a better lover to you is a touchy subject. However, as awkward as such a conversation might be, it’s still certainly preferable to cheating on them to get the sex you want, dumping themorjustmiserablyresentingthem.Thisisn’tjustaboutmakingsureyou’resatisfied—it’saboutsolidifying and deepening a connection. It may not even be about sex (I just used that as the most obvious and delicate example), but this week is about open and honest communication, and offering constructive criticism in a way that’s loving, gentle and (relatively) easy to hear. Of course, if you get some of your own medicine thrown back at you, you’d better gracefully take it.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Pointing out to someone how badly they’re mishandling the situation is pretty unlikely to help matters. Chances are they already know, and your intervention will just put them on the defensive and possibly escalate the negative aspects of the scenario. Your job is to offer them information and tools on how to better cope with the circumstances before them, in a way they’ll be receptive to. This is no easy task, I know—however I hope that you’ll at least try to rise to the challenge. Putting yourself in their shoes might be hard (after all, you’d never botch things this badly); nevertheless, it’s your first step.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Demanding that everyone else make things easier for you is not the way to go this week. We all have burdens to bear, and it’s not fair to force others to carry the bulk of yours for you. It’s okay to occasionally ask for help, but don’t try to change a whole situation just to accommodate your special needs. Sometimes it’s okay to lean on your friends. Sometimes, not standing on your own two feet is simply being lazy. Let the situation be exactly what it wants to be, and navigate your own way through it—by yourself.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s one thing to not let others “cramp your style,” and quite another to blatantly ignore well-meant feedback. Of course you must consider the source of the criticism, and take all of it with a grain of salt—but you should still take it on board. Aries often are too receptive to the opinions of others; however, occasionally you can be stubbornly blind to the reality checks your benevolent friends try to give you. Keep dreaming with your head in the clouds, by all means—but if someone you trust tries to tug you back to earth, let them help you plant your feet on solid ground.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Yes, people lie, all the time. However, that doesn’t mean you need to become chronically suspicious. A hearty dose of skepticism is certainly in order in your day-to-day dealings, but be careful that it doesn’t cross the line into outright paranoia. Humans are frequently untruthful and deceptive, it’s true—but most of the time they’re actually mostly honest, simply because it’s easier and feels better. Practice more trust this week. If you get burned, you get burned. You’ll find, once you’ve let go of the awful burden of trying to always protect yourself, you won’t mind a little scorch here and there.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Just because you have a special fondness for blue eyes does not mean all your lovers must have blue eyes—of course! However, while your rational mind accepts things like this, there’s part of you that still tends to dismiss people who don’t fit some superficial ideal you subconsciously desire. You need to look deeper and be more flexible. That doesn’t mean you must “love the one you’re with,” but you ought to at least try. Almost no one ends up with their pre-imagined ideal mate. In fact, most happy couples are relatively surprised at who they ended up with. Allow for a similar surprise, won’t you?

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Never underestimate the power of the new, when it comes to matters of love, and especially lust. We all crave newness at times, and even if we inevitably return to the comfort, safety, and wonder of the beloved familiar, anyone honest has to admit that they are often drawn to the unfamiliar, unknown, and exotic. Surprises are sexy. Use this natural human tendency to deepen your own intimacies this week. You, after all, are full of surprises—this week would be a brilliant time to unveil another one, and celebrate a heretofore unrevealed facet of yourself.
