Chemical & Nobel Overload HYPER LOCAL Interesting item in the October 13 Maui News, about a decision by the County Council’s Infrastructure Management Committee to table a bill that would ban Styrofoam takeout containers. As is often the case, the juiciest nugget was buried near the end: “[Rep.] Joe Souki, speaking for the American Chemistry Council and not, he told the committee, as a state legislator, said: ‘Simply banning polystyrene will not reduce litter. It just changes the type of litter.’” The American Chemistry Council, for those unfamiliar,

Of course, the fact that Maui News publisher Joe Bradley— who in the same issue penned an editorial

is a lobby organization with a member list that reads like a who’s-who of nefarious multinational heavy-hitters: Monsanto, Dow, DuPont, Big Oil, Big Carbon, etc. It’s wonderful to hear that Joe can change hats so easily, working hard for the interests of his Central Maui constituents one minute and shilling for his big business cronies the next. To rephrase Souki’s own words: Simply getting rid of one boughtand-sold political hack won’t end undue corporate influence in government. But it wouldn’t hurt…. Even if your sympathies lie with the workers whose jobs are in danger, it’s difficult to miss the irony in the slogan “water for all” being used by the same people who are defending the right of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar and parent company Alexander & Baldwin to maintain private control over Maui’s water resources. Quoted in a Maui News piece titled “Chamber: Water for all favored

(The GBL is perhaps best known for giving aging Major Leaguers like stolen base king Ricky Henderson and steroid

Though the topic has been beaten to death, buried, exhumed, reanimated and beaten to death again, I suppose I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize. Those weighing in fall into three distinct camps: the rabid anti-Obama zealots who criticize anything related to the President; the doe-eyed Obama apologists who swoon at his every move; and everyone else. Predictably, the first two groups pounced immediately, staked out their pre-determined positions and began lobbing verbal grenades at each other, while the rest of us were left to cover our heads and dodge the shrapnel. Here’s the message that’s getting lost: this is all symbolic fluff. Yes, the Peace Prize comes with a cash award, but Obama has pledged to give that to charity. Yes, it’s endowed with some prestige, but honestly—name the last five Nobel Peace Prize winners. (No fair Googling.) What we’ve gotten is a week of shouting about nothing (which pretty well sums up American cable news and punditry in general), and another distraction from the very real, very pressing, very dire issues that peskily refuse to go away no matter how tight we scrunch up our eyes and cover our ears and sing la-lala-la-la. If the prize motivates Obama to sack up and start making tough, necessary decisions, great. Beyond that, with all due respect to our esteemed Scandinavian friends, let’s drop the damn subject. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut13

Tragic Kingdom

The story of Princess Ka‘iulani is as heartbreaking as Hawaii’s own “

I

must have been born under an unlucky star, as I seem to have my life planned out for me in such a way that I cannot alter it,” wrote Princess Victoria Ka‘iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn in 1897, from a tiny island in the English Channel just 12 miles off the coast of Normandy—as far as can be imagined from Oahu, the Princess’s island of birth. This week, we celebrate Princess Ka‘iulani’s birthday on October 16. On Maui, festivities include an Upcountry festival (see This Week’s Picks for details). On Oahu, the new film Barbarian Princess will debut, part of the Hawaii International Film Festival. The film’s title has sparked controversy. It’s a term that was coined by the 19thcentury American press, which, under the heavy influence of pro-annexationists, launched a smear campaign against Ka‘iulani as she prepared to plead for the reinstatement of her land’s sovereign rule to the U.S. Senate and then-President Grover Cleveland. (To be fair, journalists and cartoonists of the day could not

have easily anticipated the poise and enchantment of Ka‘iulani, and quickly amended their positions.) Though her life ended in tragedy, Ka‘iulani led an enchanted youth. Wanting for nothing, the royal child had free reign of the lush ‘Ainahau estate. As interesting as she was beautiful, Ka‘iulani garnered the deep friendship of author Robert Louis Stevenson—a fast friend of then-King David Kalakaua, and thusly all the royal family— who in 1889 wrote the following: Written in April to Ka‘iulani, in the April of her age, and at Waikiki, within easy walk of Ka‘iulani’s Banyan. When she comes to my land and her fathers, and the rain beats upon the window (as I fear it will), let her look at this page—it will be like a weed, gathered and pressed at home, and she will remember her islands and the shadow of the mighty tree, and she will hear the peacock’s screaming in the dusk and the wind blowing in the palms, and she will think of her father sitting there alone.

Though Stevenson’s words eerily foreshadow Ka’iulani’s own end, it was Miriam’s final words to her daughter— as she lay mysteriously ailing, at the very brink of her life—that closed with ominous shadow the only sunny chapter in Ka’iulani’s tragic tale: “You will go far away from your land and your people and be gone a very long time. You will never marry and you will never rule Hawaii.” These things indeed came to pass, and at 13 the young princess traveled far— sent off for private education at Great Harrowden Hall in Northhamptonshire, England. There, as Ka‘iulani herself eloquently explains in a statement made to the English press before traveling to Washington D.C., to plea before Congress, she was “educated privately and fitted to the position [of queen] which by the constitution of Hawai’i, I was to inherit.” Yet at the time of her dark musings, Ka‘iulani was merely a citizen of the Republic of Hawaii and four years had passed since the overthrow of her aunt, Constitutional Queen

of Hawaii, Lili‘uokalani. Ka‘iulani, distraught, wrought her own demise. Despite protests from her friends who were along on an outing on the Big Island’s Parker Ranch, she took off on her own, deep into a rainstorm, a rebel on horseback. Immediately taking ill, she was rushed home to ‘Ainahau, where, in March 1899, little more than a year after Hawaii’s annexation to the United States, she died. Her father said, “she died of rheumatism of the heart,” though popular myth holds (as with many of the late monarchs of the day) that her life was ended by a broken heart. Legends also has it that at the precise moment of her passing, her beloved peacocks, which famously roamed her home estate, erupted into such obstinate peals that Gov. Cleghorn ordered them shot—a final dark note to the melancholy song of Hawaii’s last princess. ■

he moon landing in the summer of 1969, a month before Woodstock, transfixed the country and the world in a way LCROSS never will. Making good on President John Kennedy’s lofty goal set earlier that decade, the Apollo 11 mission signified American technological supremacy in the Cold War competition with the Soviet Union, which put the first man in space, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, in 1961. It offered a welcome respite from the deepening disaster of the Vietnam War, civil rights rioting and the assassinations of two Kennedys and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For a moment, America, rocked by political and social upheaval, once again believed in its greatness, ingenuity and promise. Four decades later, we could use a dose of that sort of positivity. Last November, a ripple circled the globe—the leading edge of a surge of hopefulness—as our country elected a brilliant orator, a man carrying a message of hope in the face of mounting fiscal, environmental and political crises. Yet President Obama alone is not capable of lifting the veil of stupification and cynicism that has shrouded our country. Even the unexpected pronouncement that our nation’s leader had been awarded the Nobel Peace prize merely opened new lines of political sniping from his detractors. One liberal voice, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, came to his defense. “Obama is moving too slow for most of us,” wrote the man whose movies have taken aim at

When the moon hits your eye...

“The world has stood by in utter horror for the past eight years,” continued Moore, “as they watched the descendants of Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson light the fuse of their own self-destruction. We flipped off the nations of this planet by abandoning Kyoto and then proceeded to melt eight more years of the polar ice caps. We invaded two nations that didn’t attack us, failed to find the real terrorists and, in effect, ignited our own wave of terror. People all over the world wondered if we’d gone mad.” Is it not, then, further lunacy to pursue a Star Trek fantasy for a lunar space station, when we’re still searching for intelligent life on

orty summers ago, as Neil Armstrong prepared to make his giant leap, my family and households around the world gathered to witness the momentous occasion. Though the slowscan lunar transmission images were grainy and the sound distorted, the importance of the moment on that hot July evening was clear enough. Armstrong’s voice brought a collective sigh of relief to millions of viewers “Houston, Tranquility Base here,” spoke the flight’s commander. “The Eagle has landed.” Standing in stark contrast to Apollo 11’s unifying lunar odyssey was last week’s $80 million NASA mission that sent a spacecraft slamming into the moon’s surface, looking for signs of ice crystals. Further explanations of the rationale behind the LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite) project make it sound even more bizarre: should there be sufficient evidence of trapped water in the debris plume kicked up by slamming the upper stage of the Centaur rocket near the moon’s south pole, it could serve as a possible landing and habitation site (since water could be “manufactured” from the hydrogen-based material) for future moon missions. “At the core of NASA’s future space exploration,” states the agency’s Web site, “is a return to the moon, where we will build a sustainable long term human presence. As the space shuttle approaches retirement and the International Space Station nears completion, NASA is building the next fleet of vehicles to bring astronauts back to the moon, and possibly to Mars and beyond.” Not to rain on your parade, NASA, but we haven’t managed to “build a sustainable

Earth? And, alas, scientists and astronomers viewing the LCROSS impact around the world—hoping to see bright flashes or plumes of debris—saw….nothing. Instead, NASA will analyze data from the mission’s infrared sensor and the world’s largest telescopes, including the 88-inch University of Hawaii instrument at Mauna Kea. A month ago, Gov. Lingle told the Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce on Maui that she supports two advanced technology solar telescopes, on Haleakala and the Big Island, as they could bring 100 construction jobs and needed revenue. It was a further sign of her misplaced priorities, in the wake of announcements of drastic state budget cuts and furloughs. Perhaps it’s time to redirect the $300 million-per-month NASA moon program, announced by President George W. Bush in the wake of the 2003 space shuttle Columbia disaster. Many have said we need an Apollo program-like effort to set our course for renewable energy. Certainly countless other issues could benefit from that level of funding and attention: education, health care, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, rainforest preservation, even seeking to free Tibet through diplomatic efforts. Fill in the blank for a worthwhile cause, however lofty, that you’d propose to spend $300 million on every month. Think big. It’s possible to reach for the stars while keeping your feet planted on solid ground. ■

PRACTICAL COKE What is believed to be the world’s only commercial lounge openly serving cocaine operates in La Paz, Bolivia, though the owners of “Route 36” have to change locations from time to time, depending on the moods of the bribed authorities. An August dispatch in London’s The Guardian reported that a nearly pure gram costs the equivalent of about $14 ($22 for “premium”), served by waiters in an empty CD case, with straws, but bar drinks are also available. Route 36 is well known to backpacking tourists. Recalled one waiter, “We had some Australians; they stayed here for four days. [T]he only time they left was to go to the ATM.”

@grandmaflorence AT AGE 101, LAHAINA’S FLORENCE HASEGAWA HAS HUNDREDS OF FOLLOWERS ON THE MICRO-BLOGGING SITE TWITTER. BUT SHE’S MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE BIRDS IN HER YARD… BY YNEZ TONGSON

F

lorence Hasegawa sits in her chair like a life-wizened general, barking orders to family and friends. Like any good general, she has a lot of loyal followers—790 to be exact, as of this writing, from all corners of the globe. Those followers have found her on Twitter, the ubiquitous micro-blogging site that allows users to post short messages (140 characters or less) about whatever’s on their mind. For Grandma Florence, as she is known on Twitter, that means ruminations on everything from family to food to whether she fears death (she doesn’t). To call Grandma Florence old would be unfair. Instead, she’s rich in years: 101 of them. Florence Hasegawa was born to Japanese immigrants on May 20, 1908, in Lahaina. After receiving a grade-school education at Kamehameha III, she went on to become a marriage license agent for Maui County’s Department of Health in the early 1930s. She continued in that line of work for 70 years,

I’m 101. Fixing b’fast. Papaya. Oatmeal. Mega-vitamins 2x day. My doc advised against this. He’s now dead.

O

f course, any time someone reaches triple digits, people want to know the secret to their longevity. For Florence, it could be her diet. Staples include oatmeal, bananas, papayas, mangos and green tea. Favorite foods include sushi and her grandson’s (James “Kimo” Masumoto) green papaya soup. She avoids foods with added sugar, and opts to use stevia as a substitute. She also takes lots of multi-viatmins and supplements and refuses medication, except for in the rare instance of illness. She also stays mentally active,

Florence is nonchalant about her growing celebrity. “People can do whatever they want,” she says.

I’m 101. Spending today by myself, without a care, glad there’s no man sitting on the couch expecting me to cook his meals.

don’t want to talk about changes, I’m too old to get involved.” Instead, she focuses on the present. Like today’s troubling economic recession, summed up in a certain cable company ad. “Every day, the same thing. A woman crying, everyday! A man…almost crying! I don’t like that!” Current events, like the Maui Marathon, don’t faze her. “If people want to run from Wailuku to Lahaina, that’s all right. Good exercise.”

finally retiring in December of last year, at age 100. She has been affectionately referred to as “the oldest marriage licensor in America.” Florence officiated thousands of licenses. She issued licenses to celebrities, athletes, announcers and doctors, including one who prescribed her a cocktail of raisins, gin and water for her arthritis. Six years ago, she even issued a license to Maui Time’s own Tommy and Jen Russo. (Her blunt speech has on occassion sent people storming out, after she asked how many times they had been married before.) You would think someone who has helped so many people get married would be at least somewhat interested in romance. After surviving two husbands, Florence doesn’t even want to think about dating. “My second husband died in 1972. I don’t want any man sitting on my couch waiting for me to cook him his next meal,” she says. When I try to ask Florence about Maui of old, I’m rebuffed with, “No, no, no! I don’t care about that! Of course, Maui has changed. Lahaina used to be small. Now…I

writing daily in her journal and reading extensively (cookbooks, the Bible and the dictionary top her list). She gets up in the morning, feeds herself, does chores, eats and around 3pm, takes a nap. Around 6pm, she wakes, makes dinner, and then watches a little TV (favorite shows include the Food Network, Animal Planet’s Animal Police and samurai shows on KIKU). According to her Twitter feed, she goes to bed promptly at 10pm. This routine is kept like clockwork, to the point where neighbors know to check on her if the lights go off-schedule. Whatever the secret to her longevity is, Florence isn’t telling. “I don’t care about that,” she says. Florence is thoroughly candid about death. “I think I’m dying already,” she playfully quips. “Sometimes, my head just blanks. I have headaches.” (If headaches and blanking out are sure signs of dying, then a majority of the population is in trouble.) She has survived many of her close friends, her doctor and some of her children and

grandchildren. She plans to be cremated, and have her ashes, along with the ashes of her loved ones, combined and scattered in the ocean. If she misses her youth, she doesn’t show it. “I don’t want to be young anymore,” she says. “I don’t mind dying. My friends are all gone. My husband George. They’re in Heaven, waiting for me. I’m just waiting for God to call me home.” When teasingly asked by a family member, “Does God have your phone number?”, Florence, still sharp as a tack, responds sternly: “No! God doesn’t need a telephone.” Florence lives alone in the same Lahaina home she’s occupied since 1940. She scoffs at her family’s attempts to change this. “They want to send me to Hale Makua! I don’t want that,” she says. When asked if she would live with her youngest daughter, playwright/poet Pat Masumoto, she deadpans a reply: “I want to stay right here.” Instead, she receives assistance from friends, family and neighbors. Neighbors Luz and Evelyn help with groceries, household tasks and check on her from time to time. Grandson Kimo often visits to make home repairs. Pat and partner Jeff visit at least once a week, sometimes just to talk story. Of course, Florence has something to say about this. “I don’t like people visiting me all the time,” she says. “But if someone calls me [on the phone], calls me, calls me, calls me many times, and I don’t answer, maybe I’m dead. Have someone check on me.” She frequents the Lahaina Senior Center, and is brought Meals on Wheels on weekdays. She appreciates the service, but not all the food they bring. “When they have salad, it’s too tough to chew,” she says.

F

lorence was first introduced to the Internet when she asked Pat to do research on vitamins. Later, Pat helped her create a Twitter account. Pat posts messages from Florence’s journal or that Florence dictates to her. It was on Twitter that Florence met Ivy Bean, a woman three years her senior. Ask about Ivy now, and Pat laughs and whispers, “Mom got bored with her.” Florence regularly tweets about her day-to-day life, including the plight of some birds that visit her, a saga that ends in disappointment. “They all flew away! They’re not coming back!” Florence is nonchalant about her growing celebrity. She’s been featured in numerous articles, and her list of followers grows almost daily. “People can do whatever they want,” she says. When pressed on the issue and reminded that she has inspired people all over the world, she shrugs it off. “It’s up to them what they do.” Florence Hasegawa is definitely not the quiet little grandmother, dispensing sage wisdom for anybody who will listen. Instead, she’s a firecracker, a woman who has better things to do than sit still answering questions. Asked if she has advice for young women, she replies briskly and succinctly: “No!” I prod her to offer something of wisdom, but the general holds her ground. “I’m not a smart woman. I’m a poor old lady. And God doesn’t have a telephone.” ■

parent operation. The name suggests take-out, but the place isn’t merely a counter and a cook. It actually has a clean, inviting surf-themed décor and enough tables and stools to seat a dozen or so patrons (provided you’re willing to get cozy). Though we had designs on an Upcountry picnic, on a recent Saturday visit we had the place virtually to ourselves and so elected to eat on-site. (Really, picnics are overrated—all those ants and grass in your food and spillage on your lap.) The selection is a pared-down version of what’s offered at the main restaurant—breakfast options, sandwiches, soups, pizza etc. I opted for the tuna salad sandwich, a heaping dollop of tuna on a sliced baguette with lettuce and tomato. My dining companion got the excellent veggie sandwich (and by excellent I mean even for staunch carnivores), which comes piled with lettuce, tomato, shredded carrot, cucumber, avocado, red onion, grilled eggplant and a pesto spread and perfectly exemplifies one of Max’s winningest traits: fresh ingredients. Add a basket of well-seasoned garlic fries (and some cheese pizza for the keiki in our trio) and it was all we could do to clear our plates. Think of Max To Go as that rare and cherished breed: a cool little brother who actually supports his big sibling. ■

with admiration, as he briefly broke character backstage with kind smiles and shoulder pats to friends and friends’ parents. Also thoroughly enjoyable are Chara e Tongg and the shrill fun she has with her—very believable—turn as Juliet’s nurse, as well as Tatiana Bradley, a regal vision as Lady Capulet. Then of course there are the play’s starcrossed lovers. Nick Wright as Romeo is straight out of an American Eagle ad, and when he actually scales a ladder to the balcony where he actually kisses Deni Harrelson, as Juliet, you can’t help but feel the high-hopes fluttering of young romance—a feeling that has probably lay long-dormant for those past their dancing days. Harrelson—though at times difficult to hear in the outdoor expanse—is a jewel you simply can’t take your eyes off. Her lustrous locks and fresh-faced looks of longing are the epitome of girlhood beauty. This is only the second time Seabury has used the courtyard of the Cooper House as a theater venue—the first being a montage of Shakespeare scenes performed when Wormser herself was still a student. Considering the success of its opening weekend, coupled with the addition of another weekend of shows, this outdoor Upcountry theater trend is one that that’s likely to continue, and one I’ve fallen in love with—enough to happily attend hereafter, even if the plot ends in (spoiler alert for extraterrestrials and those waking from a 500-year coma) tragedy. ■

Star-crossed lovers under the stars.

l!

I

t is with jealousy befitting a Shakespearian villain that I walk the well-manicured grounds of Seabury Hall, to the tinkling of piped chamber music. In the early-evening dusk, garden and hallway sconces cast an amber glow along the grass-edged pathway, toward the stage set up outside the Cooper House, which is illuminated by theatrical lights, draped in deep reds, its pillars wrapped in vines. Leave it to stately Seabury to pull out all the stops for its staging of Romeo and Juliet, which features some of the finest costumes and props I’ve seen at a local production. (Major props, no pun intended, to seamstresses Caroline Clark, Carolyn Wright and Diana Spaite, along with costume consultant Andre Morissette). The weaponry too—of which, in general, I am a big fan— is stunning: great, glittering foils well-used in three swordplay scenes, daggers tucked into belts. Somehow or other, I’ve arrived an hour early. Fortunate, as this Saturday night showing has already sold out. Sitting at a square picnic table situated under a tree— quiet with my further ruminations about what it might have been like to have spent my schooling here—I find my early-arrival has landed me a little backstage insight. Much of the young cast has assembled in the pathway nearby, still wearing their

rapid transformation from children into self-aware adults.” Wormser likens that transition to the students in the play, who she says “ have embraced and risen to meet the challenges presented to them.”

Sweet ‘Wild’ of Mine

Even if you never sailed off to tame monsters, this will still look a lot like your childhood Where the Wild Things Are

★★★★★

Rated PG/88 min.

I

t happened to all of us when we were children: while playing outside with the neighborhood kids, someone plays a little too rough, hurts you and you cry, partly because of the pain, but mostly because you feel kind of betrayed. No film about growing up knows this tough life lesson better than Spike Jonze’s strange, personal and wonderful Where the Wild Things Are, an adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s brilliant children’s book. A bratty young boy named Max (the remarkable, an aptly named, Max Records in a killer film debut) has annoyed his mother (Catherine Keener) one time too many and runs off into the night. He takes helm of a boat and sails to an island inhabited by giant monsters that are talkative, furry and every bit as child-like and insecure as he is. The early scenes portraying Max’s lonely

18 October 15, 2009

Nothing like watching a sunset with an eight-foot hairy monster. childhood and troublesome ways are startling in their realism—this isn’t a cute, disposable kiddie-movie version of youth, but an honest, even edgy portrait of how it feels, as well as looks, to experience the exhilaration and embarrassment of being a kid. Once the setting shifts to the Wild Things’ island, the initial glimpse of the creatures is jarring, as they speak in modern day vernacular and are voiced by familiar performers like James Gandolfini and Catherine O’Hara. But the monsters grew on me and the full-sized

creature suits, created by the Jim Henson Company, are amazingly expressive and match the emotional voice work of the actors. Some have expressed concern that this PG-rated movie may be too intense for children, but, other than a few brief moments, the film isn’t scary and the many keiki who were in the theater with me were giggling with delight throughout. Records’ utterly natural, always believable performance reminded me of myself and my younger brother, and

Keener’s work is equally moving and honest. One of the reasons I go to the movies is to see something I’ve never seen before and Jonze, the director of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, is always finding new ways to dazzle his audience. Visually, Wild Things evokes the richest illustrations from children’s picture books while pulling you in and reminding you how universal the joys and heartaches of childhood are. My only complaint: the music is hit and miss. Carter Burwell’s score is reliably good but the original children’s songs that screech on the soundtrack are annoying. Thankfully, this is a forgivable flaw, not a movie-killer. By the film’s double climax, I was genuinely choked up and walked away feeling elated. While I could say I used to be like the kid on screen, the truth is the big kid inside of me can still relate to everything Max went through. Parts of this movie are right out of my life…and likely yours, too. ■

Maui Film Festival Candlelight Cinema Will return October 28.

New This Week

Law Abiding Citizen - R - Thriller - Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) exacts revenge when the man who murdered his wife and children a decade ago, is released. Nick Rice (Jaime Foxx) is the prosecutor who was assigned to the case, and responsible for the plea bargain that saved the killer. Shelton—a brilliant sociopath pushed to the brink by his trials— contends with Rice, who he feels is part of a broken justice system. 122 min. The Step Father - R - Thriller - Penn Badgley plays Michael Harding, a young man who has just returned home from military school, who’s suspicions about his mother’s (Sela Ward) new boyfriend (Dylan Walsh) are frighteningly confirmed. 102 min. Where the Wild Things Are - PG - Family - Director Spike Jonze teamed with Dave Eggers in creating the hip screen adaptation of this classic children’s tale, written and illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak. Staying true to the book’s delightfully moody palate, Jonze combines live action with CGI and (the all-too lost art of) puppeteering— bringing to life the whimsical characters beloved by so many since 1963. 94 min.

Now Showing

Capitalism a Love Story - R - Documentary - Michael Moore’s latest installment comes on the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking film, Roger & Me. From the epicenters of financial institutions and big business, to Washington D.C., Moore gives viewers rarely seen insight into the powerhouses at the heart of our current collapse. 127 min. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs PG - Family - The beloved book--a husband and wife team-production by Judi (author) and Ron Barrett (illustrator)--has inspired kids since it’s first publication in 1978 and finally gets its due props with a movie. However, while I really try to refrain from negativity--especially with kids flicks--the trailers have really rubbed me the wrong way. How can producers stray so far from the book’s incredible illustrations? So, keiki, if you see this movie, promise me you’ll read the book too. 90 min. Couples Retreat - PG-13 - Comedy - Stars Vince Vaughn, John Favreau, Jason Batemen (heh heh), Faizon Love, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristen Davis and Kali Hawk, as four Midwestern couples who embark on a surf, sun and sand retreat in order to reconnect. Supposed hilarity ensues when the gurus there to guide them to marital bliss cause a quirky mess. 107 min G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - PG13 - Action - A super-elite team of international military operatives battle the evildoer organization Cobra, with high tech weapons the likes of which you probably never dreamed of while playing with your Hasbro toys in the sandbox. This flashy new rendition’s sandy battlefield is, not surprisingly, a North African desert. 120 min. The Informant - R - Comedy - A true story, based on the book, The Informant, by Kurt Eichenwald. It’s hard for me to say the name Matt Damon (who in this movie plays executive turned informant/whistleblower, Mark Whitacre), without Team America: World Police (2004) inflection, and for that fact alone I am stoked about this movie. Okay, two facts--the second being Scott Bakula (playing FBI agent, Brian Shepherd), my favorite Enterprise captain, second only to that “bald chap,” Picard. 108 min.

The Invention of Lying - PG13 - Comedy - Ricky Gervais (creator of The Office) and Matthew Robinson direct this film about a world in which no one has ever lied. Gervais not only directs, he stars too, as writer Mark Bellison, who figures out how to be bad (all by himself, I think), and capitalizes on it. 105 min. My One and Only - PG13 - Comedy - With her two teenage sons in tow, Ann Devereaux (Renee Zellweger) hits the road in a baby blue Cadillac Coupe de Ville in search of a wealthy new mate, after leaving her philandering husband (Kevin Bacon). 108 min. Pandorum - R - Thriller - In total blackness, two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber, completely unaware of who they are, let alone their mission. At first they believe they’re alone on the ship, before they realize the terrible truth. 112 min. Surrogates - PG13 - Sci-Fi - In the future, robots are smarter and better looking than humans. So, humans decide to live in isolation and interact with fellow bag of bones via robots alone. Bruce Willis plays an FBI agent who investigates some mischief and conspiracy surrounding the murder of the surrogate inventor. 112 min. The Time Traveler’s Wife - PG13 - Romance - Seemingly devised especially for geeky girls like me, the plot circles around a debonair Chicago librarian (Eric Bana), who is cursed/ blessed with a gene causing spontaneous, involuntary time travel. Trouble aside, he remains hopelessly dedicated to and in love with his timeline-bound wife (Rachel McAdams), throughout all their longing battles through time and space. 108 min. Toy Story 1 & 2 3D - G - Family - A double feature, only in theaters and only out for two weeks! Having had the opportunity to see an extended trailer for the ‘event’ in 3-D, I can attest these already-classics all dolled up in three-dimensional fashion is not-to-be-missed (for keiki and adults alike). 185 min. Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself - PG13 - Comedy - Aunty April (Taraji P. Henson), a lounge singer, drinks heavily and lives off of her married boyfriend, Raymond. Wanting little to do with her delinquent niece and two young nephews recently charged under her care, she starts to reassess her lifestyle when an intriguing young Mexican man moves into her basement. 113 min. Whip It - PG13 - Comedy - Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut about a bored Texan, Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), who wants to go wild and does so by joining rinks/ranks (whatever) with some rockin’ roller derby chicks. Not content with a crazy name like Bliss, she opts for the skater alter-ego, Babe Ruthless. See the flick and feel inspired? Maui’s got some great sk8 opportunities! So, go to the theater, then check out myspace.com/mauirollergirls & mauihockey.com. 111 min. Zombieland - R - Horror - See last week’s Film Critiques for more! This is one of the few flicks I’ve been truly excited about. Woody Harrelson plays the zombie-slaying, kamakazi-cowboy “Tallahassee,” Emma Stone is “Wichita,” Abigail Breslin is “Little Rock,” and Bill Murray is himself. Uh, what more to say? See you there! 88 min. UH Warrior Football at Idaho - Check out the University of Hawaii football games for $10 a pop. This Saturday, UH at Idaho, the sixth game in Warrior’s longest on-the-road stretch in 45 years.

“The true purpose of our music is to awaken a longing in the heart for that which is omnipresent: the experience of silence and mediation. It is not about entertainment—it is simply our spiritual practice,” says guitarist Miten. Early in his career, he opened for the likes of Fleetwood Mac (with my

Robert Louis Stevenson famously inked these lines, part of a poem to Princess Ka‘iulani, before she departed from her Hawaiian homeland, to go to private schooling abroad: “Light of heart and bright of face: The daughter of a double race… But our Scots island far away, Shall glitter with unwonted day, And cast for once their tempest by, To smile in Ka‘iulani’s eye.” The life and loss of this beloved halfScottish, half-Hawaiian royal enraptures the hearts and minds of all who learn her story, and the Isle of Maui Pipe Band will honor her memory with the 2nd Annual Princess Ka’iulani Festival, timed near her October 16 birthday. Keeping perfectly with the theme, HAPA will perform—special guests

wooden balls buddy, Mick), and (wish he was my buddy) Lou Reed. First meeting vocalist Deva Premal in India, at the ashram of the mystic Osho (controversial, Osho has criticized orthodox Indian religion as being full of antiquated ritual), the pair has lived and toured together since 1991, selling half a million albums internationally. Premal, a classically trained musician, has performed privately for the Dalai Lama himself, His Holiness calling her work “beautiful music.” Joining the duo is special guest Manose—a darling Himalayan flautist, from Boudha, Nepal—a village nestled along an ancient route that stretches from the Himalayan mountain range into the Kathmandu valley. Friday night is not a concert, but an “Enchantment Evening,” with “devotional singing” and “ecstatic voice celebration,” while Saturday’s all-day activities include the aforementioned, plus a show. 875-8820, globalmediaproductions.com

also include the Richard Ho’opi’i ‘Ohana, and the Tropical Harps (naturally, too, the Isle of Maui Pipe Band). Manu Boyd will lecture on the princess’s family history, and with hula specific to Ka’iulani and the royal family, Halau Hula Wehiwehi O Leilehua performs. Ka‘iulani fashions will be presented with “History of the Holoku’u Fashion Show,” and additionally, a number of games and contests will be featured. A few sound particularly intriguing: men’s “Bonniest Knees” and ladies rolling pin and Wellie (boot) toss, along with the MPD and MFD battling it out with a hukihuki (tugof-war) exhibition. See you in line for the “best” lau lau and Scottish shortbread! 5731130, isleofmauipipeband.com.

Lyn Ford of Ohio and Jeff Gere of Oahu— both noted storytellers, “gifted at making skin crawl”—return to the Valley Isle with a number of free appearances at local libraries (Thursday-Saturday, see Da Kine Calendar for more). They then join Maui’s own Kathy Collins and Don Lopez— with pianist Les Adams providing a scary score—for a frightfully special evening at the Iao Theater. They’ve got but one chicken-

The 2009 Maui Healing Garden Festival runs from October 17-25 (see Da Kine Calendar for more). The main event—a Festival Day & Health Expo— slated for Sunday, aims to shine a big green spotlight on traditional, multicultural uses of plants both nutritionally and medicinally, while educating attendees about “organic foods and farming, home garden pharmacies, sustainability, permaculture and edible landscapes.” Mmm… edible landscapes. (My first thought is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, but I’m sure this version is much better for body and Earth.) The festival is focusing on being a zero-waste event, yet keeps to true festival style as the

skin goal: “to spook you out,” and aim to do so in such convincing fashion that you must be over 13 to attend. 244-8680 ext. 23, mauionstage.com… As the night progresses, Saturday goes from PG-13 scary to R-rated freaky, with the Cherry Blossom Cabaret (of Honolulu) Speakeasy shindig at Casanova. The event will feature Maui lovelies from the Kit Kat Club Cabaret, the music of DJ Joey the Wrench, and—no event boasting beautiful babes would be complete without her—Rachel Deboer’s live body painting. You’ll need no password (that is, disregarding the cover) to get your drinks (legally) at this speakeasy, so I will recommend any one of the devilish delights that are Casanova’s martinis. Work on your “o-face” with “The Oprah,” a crimson-colored, pomegranate indulgence well suited for the night. Oh, and if you haven’t yet guessed, this event is clearly for the 21+ crowd. 572-0220, cherryblossomcabaret.com.

day is filled with a number of music and dance performances, poetry, educational demos, plenty of healthy grindz, and (my favorite) a book and plant sale. With ‘ohana-friendly activities like coconut lawn bowling, the Sacred Garden Labyrinth and magic by “The Amazing Stuporman,” Neil Bruce, this event cultivates a sound Sunday worth escaping to in this season of scares. hawaiihealinggarden.com, events@ hawaiihealthguide.com.

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

You’re not good at suffering. “Who is?” you might demand incredulously, to which I’d refer you to those masochistic Scorpios and rugged Capricorns. Unlike the latter, who usually bear hardship stoically and without complaint, you frequently make a big fuss over your misery. Fishing for sympathy and seeking relief from suffering aren’t especially character-building activities, though, and they’re poor preparation for those times when neither compassionate attention nor reprieve are forthcoming. I don’t expect you to change—you’re simply not wired to enjoy suffering. However, since this week’s torments are relatively mild, it’s a good time to work on developing your endurance, so that it’ll be there when you really need it.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Unlike your Libran neighbors, you actually thrive on suffering to some extent. Every Scorpio has a bit of a martyr in them. In fact, you sometimes even create situations that will generate more misery for you, quite on purpose (although you usually deny this). However, although I admire your ability to thrive on adversity, I worry that sometimes you’re inclined to carry it too far, and the exquisite pain of your self-torment can cross over into real misery. Because that’s a real danger this week, may I suggest that you ease up on yourself? When the opportunity to further complicate and confuse the situation arises, please pass it up.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You’re so flexible in general that you don’t really notice it on the rare occasions when you involuntarily dig in your heels and act unreasonable and stubborn. Naturally, you assume it’s the other person being a obstinate ass, since that’s usually the case—only this time it’s actually you. I can’t imagine what’s gotten your panties all knotted up, but this issue is really pushing buttons you’re just not used to having pushed. Notice that. Take a step back from it, and see what you can do to work around that knee-jerk reaction. Unfortunately, it might involve eating a bit of humble pie, saying you’re sorry, and letting someone else take the reins for a while.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

It’s no secret that you can be a bit of a control freak. You’re actually very good at massaging and manipulating situations to work out well for you. What you suck at is when things are really and truly out of your hands. Generally, you flail, try desperate measures, and freak out. Not very graceful or productive. As you get older, you need to learn to recognize these situations more quickly, so you can stop wasting time and energy trying to take control. That doesn’t mean you must shed your control freak tendencies entirely, though; just refocus them on the one thing you can control—your own reaction.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

A skilled sculptor might look at a block of granite and see a shape inside, one they’re capable of exposing to the world. The rest of us will generally just see a chunk of rock, or, even if we saw something, be incapable of “getting it out.” Rock-sculpting is hardly your forte, but you are very adept at something similar involving the human spirit. You’re able to see qualities in certain people that are quite invisible (or inaccessible) to everyone else. You may, in fact, be the only one in a position to help dig up and expose those qualities to the world. Shirking that duty does both you and the poor boggeddown person in question a grave disservice. Keep that in mind this week.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Having a genie pop out of a lamp to offer you three wishes might be one of the worst things that could ever happen to you. After torturing yourself for days agonizing over what to wish for, you’d finally have one of your crazily flippant moments and blow them all on something ridiculously easy to obtain on your own, like an ice cream cone. Of course that would lead to a whole new set of tortured questions (“Why didn’t I get sprinkles!?”) that could take you on an entirely new spiral of self-doubt. Don’t do that to yourself. If you really can’t make a thoughtful decision on your own, just find a trusted (and decisive) friend to make it for you, and trust that whatever she chooses will be at least as good, and probably better, than whatever you’d have come up with on your own.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

While camping, there are those who’ll take pains to leave the wilderness as pristine as they found it, and others who won’t be too bothered if a bit of littering saves them some effort. And there are a criminal few who are so careless that their ignorance could cost lives, as they start fires or poison wildlife. The campground rule applies to relationships as well. You should leave any person you get involved with better off than when you found them. Walking away from a forest fire you helped ignite is just bad karma. Don’t do that shit. If you can’t put the blaze out by yourself, get help.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I heard a story about a friend of a friend, who fasted for 40 days, and then broke his fast by drinking vodka. He promptly flushed out a tapeworm, which he’d starved for more than a month and then killed with the alcohol. Sometimes such extreme measures are required to rid yourself of a tenacious parasite, but not this week. Right now the bloodsucker you’re hoping to shed is strangely vulnerable to such innovative methods as: asking him to go away. I know, it’s so out there you can’t believe it would ever work. Try it anyway.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Assuming the worst will often manifest the worst. Suspecting people of trying to take advantage of you will often turn them against you, even if they weren’t to start out with. Being paranoid that people don’t like you isn’t likely to endear you to them; last time I checked, paranoia wasn’t an especially charming quality. The world isn’t as awful and difficult a place as you sometimes make it for yourself. Haven’t you noticed that your most naively optimistic friends are also generally popular and happy? Walk a mile or two in their shoes this week. Even if it feels awkward at first, give it a go. You need the exercise.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Why does that person bug you so much? Could it be that when you look at them you subconsciously feel as if you’re gazing into an unflattering mirror? It’s hard to react with delight and affection when someone demonstrates some of your own least favorite qualities. However, think of how empowering it would be for both you and the person concerned if you could bring yourself around to such a response. Try that this week. The next time someone reminds you of a part of you you’re less than fond of, try not to react with distaste, but instead embrace compassion. You’ll both be happier for it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

I’m sure you’d love your lover to write you love songs, sculpt life-sized busts of your head, and constantly advertise your awesomeness. Don’t bother denying it. It all sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? That’s why having the average other half, who thinks a bunch of flowers or a home-made dinner are pretty darn romantic, might seem like a bit of a let-down, considering your extremely high (and largely secret) expectations. You’re unlikely to be lucky enough to find a partner who’ll consistently deify you— that’s why you need to learn to do these things for yourself (and be happy with that).

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Admit it; you get off on self-deprivation sometimes. Where your astrological neighbors, those lofty Leos, thrive on self-indulgence and sometimes even excess, you’re quite the opposite. You seem to really enjoy denying yourself things. Perhaps that makes the pleasures you do allow yourself that much sweeter, but this week I suggest simply accepting and celebrating every bit of joy and recreation that comes your way, even if you’d normally be inclined to say, “thanks, but no thanks.” You deserve as much pleasure as comes your way. Making room in your life for more bliss is not a bad thing.
