LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR GOTTA NUKE SOMETHING Your article about the Pacific Whale Foundation is more right then you know (Coconut Wireless, Oct. 9). They were fined $5,000 for doing “research” without a permit, but did you know how many times they ran right up in front of whales just to have someone jump and take photos to sell on postcards and brochures? I have seen this first-hand while fishing on my boat. Talk about harassing the whales! I totally respect the sea and everything in it, but I got so sick of anal-retentive people thinking everyone is out to harass the whales I got a bumper sticker to put on my boat trailer that says “NUKE THE WHALES.” -Mike Martinez, Kahului

WHO IS “MTW” ANYWAY? I’m not sure who “MTW” is that wrote the article on Joanne D’Patricia (“No Littering,” Oct. 2). First of all, it was me you were talking about. Secondly, you had all the written information, and still twisted some things. 1) I was not DETAINED—I voluntarily went to the police station to file a report. I was NOT ALLOWED to have a Public Police Report Number. They want to keep this ALL internal! I still do not have a number. And RIGHT–I was not ever arrested. 2) I was not strangled until after Officer [Max] Kincaide hauled me out of Lahaina Coolers—threw me up against the V shaped tree—then he strangled me. One of the bigger issues is that he HUNTED me down!!! He could have let it all go—I doubt he called in his whereabouts—how would he explain that to the police captain on duty?????????? It was clearly an issue of power and control. I have no rights—yet I pay taxes for the police cruiser they smoke in—and they are not supposed to smoke on duty... never mind in the vehicles we pay for! Hey, we even pay for their jobs! I don’t want to pay for this kind of crap behavior and treatment.

3) In [whose] opinion, is a Maui cop considered “Maui’s Finest?” I mean—wasn’t I supposed to find the “finest” at Taste of Lahaina??? I never got there! And really— WHERE DID YOU GET THAT COMMENT??? 4) Most interesting comment to make would be: Interesting that [Governor] Linda Lingle, [Attorney General] Mark Bennett have ZERO ruling of what goes on—on individual islands. 5) I despise that you HAD to say, “I gave the cop LIP.” It was not “LIP”—it was just fact. I wasn’t even being rude—just conscientious. Would you like Take Home Maui to burn to the ground? I sure don’t!!! It’s my favorite coffee/lunch place in Lahaina! It’s a really old building. 6) Can I give you LIP about not READING what I wrote and twisting it? 7) You also (whoever wrote the article “MTW”) does not know his/her grammar—and I do—and that did not help in the twisting. 8) I overall like what you did—but get all your facts straight—and let’s not put me in a position where I leave Maui in a BOX! 9) Just another reminder not to believe all you read or hear. And given the fact that I was SO REMINDED of Maui Time wanting to print the truth—and there you went off somewhere with your own story in some parts. Creating excitement, confrontation, whatever—hype. -Joanne D’Patricia, Lahaina

‘Getting People Excited’ Democrats talk Howard Dean, banking conspiracies Vermont Governor Howard Dean is by far the most interesting and engaging Democrat running for President of the United States. He’s a shrewd political operator who’s tapped into the many Democrats furious with their party’s coddling of big corporations, support for George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq and acceptance of the administration’s war on civil liberties at home. He’s got legions of support everywhere, it seems, except Maui. Despite the Democratic Party ruling the state with an iron fist since 1954, hardly anyone showed to an Oct. 9 gathering of Democrats for Dean at Maui Community College. “We’re not going to be indicted for terrorist activities, are we?” asked one activist walking in. “That’s a good question,” said another, smiling. “We’ll see.” Actually, the word “gathering” up there was a bit of an overstatement. There were just 10 people attending, including yours truly—a fact not lost on one long-time Democratic activist senior. “Six o’clock is such a bad time,” he said to his equally irritated pal before lecturing the organizers on how to get the word out. “I thought the students would be interested.” With one activist muttering in the back about a new “unipolar dynamo” that makes oil-burning engines obsolete and Republicans extremely nervous, the meeting finally began about 20 minutes late. “We’re getting people excited about voting again,” said Dean volunteer John Susic. “Many people are angry. I’m still angry. We even have Republicans coming now, who say their party has lost them.” Fellow Dean volunteer Bonnie McFadden agreed. “Since the election in Florida was stolen, I have gotten more and more horrified,” she said. “Iraq is a colossal fraud. I was very angry. But Dean stood out. He’s not afraid to say what he wanted to say. We have a lot of politicians who are simply following the president like sheep. Bush is handing everything to the wealthy.” Susic and McFadden then showed a couple films of recent Dean speeches. The speeches exemplified the stark contrast between Dean’s infectious, Harry Trumanstyle of hounding and berating his fellow candidates with the local Democratic Party’s inability to attract the party faithful to talk about someone who very well might be the nominee for the 2004 election. “I’d like to know why so many Democrats are supporting the president’s unilateral attack on Iraq,” was how Dean opened one March speech in California. “I’m representing the democratic wing of the Democratic Party.” His speech only lasted 20 or so minutes,

Dean’s excited but Dean was virtually yelling at the end. “I don’t want to listen to the fundamentalist preachers anymore!” he screamed to an already screaming crowd. “I want America to look like America!” Whether Dean holds true to his hardcore left wing ideology after getting the nomination remains to be seen. But as it stands now, Dean is gathering momentum. After the speeches—one was cut short because the volunteer lacked a remote control for the DVD player and couldn’t access it—Susic opened the floor to questions. This seemed to go fine until two people walked out when that guy who brought up that unipolar dynamo-thing asked why Dean wasn’t getting to the bottom of the “billions of dollars” in alleged insider trading that supposedly took place with United and American Airlines stock just a few days before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist hijackings and the alleged involvement of some guy who worked at Alex Brown Deutsche Bank who knew this other guy but then who suddenly resigned on Sept. 11… or something like that. “These questions I want answered,” he said, pausing dramatically. “Before I die.” That didn’t go over so well with at least one die-hard Democrat. “Dean has got to stick to things people understand,” said the senior pissed about the low turnout. “People don’t understand that stuff. You have to remember that this president is deeply loved by a majority of the people. I don’t understand it, but he is deeply loved.” “It’s the media that caused that popularity,” said Susic. “It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be a nasty campaign.”

A woman claiming she was checking a fish net at Cove Park in Kihei says she was “attacked” by a “shark.” Officials immediately closed several beaches. Her story is scary, sure, especially coming after that one tiger shark took a giant bite out of a sea turtle and all, but the picture of the woman that ran in the Maui News today just doesn’t look convincing. I mean, look at her leg! There’s like one, maybe two tiny marks. Come on! Don’t sharks, like, bite off whole appendages? For their part, officials theorize the shark was simply “small”… The Hawaii Visitors and Conference Bureau will promote “Hawaii Goodwill” at the upcoming Beijing International Cultural Tourism Festival. The Chinese thought they wouldn’t get to throw this bash, but with the World Health Organization recently removing Beijing from the SARS advisory list, the party is on. This year’s theme is “Romance.” I know when I think of the People’s Republic of China I always think of romance. Well, that and massive human rights violations, huge toy factories that pay their workers pennies a day, a million soldiers marching lockstep and wild revolutionary operas about tractors and the women who love them. So yeah: Beijing equals Romance, Romance equals Beijing. Works for me.

He won by over a million votes, people! The race wasn’t even close! The Terminator cleaned everyone’s clock—even Gary Coleman and that porn star chick. And he can’t even pronounce the name of the state he’s supposedly going to run! “California” comes out as “Caulifor-knee-yah.” Now don’t get me wrong— Arnold Schwarzenegger is immensely popular. So much so people are starting to talk about repealing the constitutional clause saying only people born in the U.S. can become president. Seems like a fine idea, sure, until you think about the last time a country let some Austrian walk in and take over…

TUESDAY, OCT. 7 California voters offer an additional 3,743,393 reasons why I was right to move to Maui.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

THURSDAY, OCT. 9 Here’s an email just received from county public information officer Ellen Pelissero: “Maui Visitors Bureau Executive Director Teryl Vencl notified Mayor Alan Arakawa by telephone this afternoon from New York City that the Island of Maui was today named ‘Best Island in the World’ by Conde Nast magazine for the 10th year in a row.” Really? No. Maui’s not cooler than Bora Bora. Tasmania’s way cooler than Maui. Still, the more I think about it… Woohoo! Maui rules! Up yours, Tahiti! In your face, Mauritius! Suck it up, umm, Palmerston Atoll! Yeaaaaaah! I can hardly wait to tell all my friends and… oh wait, here’s another email from Pelissero: “Although Teryl Vencl did report Maui received the Best Island in the World’ award from Conde Nast Traveler Magazine for the 10th year in a row, the Maui Visitors Bureau has requested a hold on the information until a formal announce-

ment is made by Conde Nast.” Ummm, riiight. Just hold off and don’t tell anyone… Got it. Maui hasn’t been named… anything. Award? What award? I haven’t heard of any stinkin’ award. Maui hasn’t won any award. Maui is the last island on the face of the Earth to win any award. This stupid rock couldn’t win an award if its life depended on it. How’s that?

FRIDAY, OCT. 10 It’s an old rule that bad news usually comes out on Friday and—oh, look at what day it is. As if on cue, the state Campaign Spending Commission levied a $303,000 fine—its largest ever, thank you—against Michael Matsumoto,

who runs the engineering firm SSFM International. His crime? Allegedly laundering $400,000 to a few Hawaiian elected officials including Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, former Governor Ben Cayetano and our former Mayor James “Kimo” Apana. Matsumoto accepted the fine without admitting guilt. But don’t fear for Matsumoto’s survival. Commission boss Bob Watada said they’d give the company a couple years or more to pay the fine because “we don’t want to run him into personal bankruptcy.” Thank God. I was worried there that a firm that’s gotten more than $7 million in public money thrown its way might be hurt just because it—allegedly—paid off a bunch of politicians… Maui Visitors Bureau Executive Director Teryl Vencl flirts with disaster by sending out a press release entitled “Maui is ‘Best Island’ for 10th Year in a Row.” Sure, Vencl claims that “the announcement was made last night at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City during a reception hosted by Conde Nast Traveler magazine,” but who can really be sure? Was it really a reception, or something more sinister? What time was this “reception?” Who attended? What kind of food did they serve? The release does not say. And who is this mysterious Solomon R. Guggenheim, anyway? This is the first I’m hearing of him. What’s his involvement? Vencl is toying with powerful forces here—forces none of us can even contemplate.

SATURDAY, OCT. 11 Volunteers from the Maui County Affordable Housing Task Force get together with Habitat for Humanity in Kula to build a home. Not one of them upcountry mansions with the stables and cows grazing out front, but a decent little abode. Of course, the real need for affordable homes is in West Maui, where resort and tourist-industry development has skyrocketed property values to the point where people born in Lahaina have to move to, well, Kula to find affordable homes. Cruise Control Ross Klein has his hands full of cruise ship sludge For a guy who usually has nothing but bad things to say about cruise ships and is universally despised by the industry because of it, Ross Klein sure loves spending a week to 10 days at sea. “I love going on cruises,” the professor of social work at Memorial University in Newfoundland said at a recent gathering. “I prefer the 100-passenger ships. My wife and I go away, we always sit at a table for two, we don’t really talk to anyone. We love it. I can’t think of anything better than waking up in the morning and seeing nothing but water around me.” Cruise ships are well known on Maui. At press time, two were anchored just off Lahaina, with a third floating in Kahului Harbor. Cruise ship tenders carrying passengers—who spend virtually no money in town—routinely block the Lanai ferries carrying locals to and from work or the grocery store. On Oct 10, Klein spoke to a couple dozen people in a small science lecture hall at Maui Community College. Klein estimated that he’s spent well over 200 days on cruises since the early 1990s. Over the last decade he’s written dozens of reports and articles on the dark underside of the industry, which last year booked an astonishing 8.7 million North American passengers. He’s gone on numerous radio shows, often incurring the wrath of the industry. But he doesn’t much go on cruises anymore. At least, not since being blacklisted a couple years ago. “They know what I look like and they prepare my food,” he said. “I don’t feel safe on ships anymore.” After listening to Klein talk for an hour, it’s hard to imagine anyone feeling safe on big cruise liners. Sure, there are the viral outbreaks that plague the ships these days, but there’s also the quasi-colonial labor practices and near contempt for ocean life and water quality. At MCC, Klein described the ashen look of horror one Indonesian cruise ship buffet worker got when asked what it was like working for Holland America, a Dutch company. “It struck me that they’d managed to duplicate the old master/servant relationship,” said Klein. “On another ship, I asked a busboy how long he had to work to become a waiter. ‘I’ll never be a waiter,’ he said. ‘My skin is too dark.’” But mostly, Klein spoke of how cruise ships “invade” towns. They arrive, drop anchor, then promptly discharge thousands of passengers, tens of thousands of gallons of sewage as well as huge quantities diesel exhaust, plastics and other toxics into the air and water. “Two cruise ships produce the same amount of waste each year as the island of

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES In August, bookstores began selling Revolve, a glossy, 392-page softcover title that directs a thought-by-thought rendition of the New Testament to its target audience of teenage girls, alongside text on typical teen-magazine subject matter such as beauty, fashion secrets and dating. (For example, proper etiquette, according to Revolve founder Laurie Whaley, requires the boy to initiate a relationship: “There’s no indication from Scripture that Mary Magdalene ever (called) Christ.”)

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Florida wildlife officials, suspecting that Israel A. Cervantes was illegally shooting at deer from his car in the Ocala National Forest in August, asked to inspect his home freezer for stored meat, and, professing innocence, Cervantes agreed. There was no deer meat, but apparently Cervantes forgot about the pound of marijuana in the freezer, and he was arrested.

The Love Boat, it floats back to you Molokai over the same period of time,” said Klein. “Some ships have advanced waste treatment systems, which means they can discharge closer to shore, but ships are still coming out of the yard with the old systems.” Because cruise ships still burn bunker oil—a thick black oil with the consistency of mayonnaise used by vessels since World War I—their exhaust contains nitrogen oxide, particulates, sulfur dioxide and other harmful toxics. The nitrogen in much of that ash is also immensely harmful to reefs and delicate water ecosystems. Making matters worse is that most—if not all—of that sewage and sludge dumped in the water is legal. According to Klein, Hawaii is one of two jurisdictions he knows of that have “Memoranda of Understanding” (MOUs) with cruise ship operators on discharge matters. Rather than based on enforceable laws, the MOUs are based on trust. Basically, the cruise line simply assures state officials they won’t dump anything harmful in the water close to shore. In practice, the operators dump sludge where they please and face no legal sanctions. “It’s all based on trust,” said Klein. “The cruise industry has not demonstrated that they’re worthy of our trust.” He then cited instance after instance of cruise lines caught falsifying records and dumping sewage in places they said they wouldn’t. Incredibly, Klein said Hawaii’s MOU with the cruise industry makes no mention of ships dumping sludge, ash or even throwing plastics overboard—an offense so toxic it’s been banned by international law. “I’m not trying to say the industry is evil,” said Klein. “They’re just doing what they can get away with.” MTW

MORE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT The Danish beer company Carlsberg announced it was relocating a plant from Stockholm, Sweden, to Gothenburg because there was too much uranium in the spring it uses near Stockholm. And the interior minister of the Netherlands, citing public concern, proposed to ban police officers from coffee shops that also legally sell marijuana. And authorities in Putnam County, W.Va., announced that someone had broken into a sheriff’s deputy’s home while he was away on vacation and set up a methamphetamine lab.

THINNING THE HERD A 20-year-old man was killed in Denver during afternoon rush hour on Sept. 1 when he jumped from a car going about 40 mph; according to friends, he had been planning a nonfatal jump for a while because he wanted to endure some trauma in order to muster the courage to get a tattoo. And a 15-year-old boy in Maryland Heights, Mo., who had been demonstrating his pain tolerance by clobbering himself on the head with his skateboard, invited a pal to take a shot, too; the first blow knocked him out, and he died four days later.

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH A 47-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to steal a woman’s backpack, his 177th arrest (Boulder, Colo.). A 36-year-old man was captured by a SWAT team after holding off police for 10 hours in a hotel room, in an incident begun when he threatened to kill hotel workers because there was no ice (Houston).

Hanging In There Red Bull King of the Air crowned at Ho’okipa The Red Bull King of the Air is one of the world’s greatest wind-sport events. Last weekend it transformed Ho’okipa Beach into a colorful, international kiteboarding circus. A palette of colorful and vibrant kites decorated the beach and swirled in the sky just offshore. Competitors dazzled the crowd with aerials, some 30 to 40 feet in the air, as well as flips, turns and masterful wave riding. “This event is considered the most prestigious in the world of wind,” said Mike Waltze, a local organizer. “Racing at Ho’okipa is a privilege. The best of the best are here this weekend, and if you win you know you won at the best field in the world.” Maui, the birthplace of kiteboarding, is the international wind sports Mecca. Red Bull purposefully made this championship a truly global event. Throughout the year they have sponsored 16 qualifier events, which took place in far flung locales from Dubai to Michigan. The winners of these qualifiers earned a trip to Maui and a place in the qualifying rounds at Kanaha Beach Park earlier in the week. Athletes hailed from across the U.S., New Zealand, Japan, Europe, the Caribbean, South Africa, and Israel. Charles Delaeu won the Red Bull King of the Air title and $4,000 without losing a single heat from the qualifiers to the final. His home base is Hyeres, France on the Mediterranean coast but he spends two months every year training on Maui.

“When I first felt the sensation of flying I knew I had to keep going with kiteboarding and I never looked back,” he said. “I thank my girlfriend for waiting at home in France and caring for our two children. This was my most important competition so far. All the best were here. It was a true world classic.” The world’s other kiteboarding hotspot is Cabarete, Dominican Republic, and two competitors from there made a strong impression at Ho’okipa. Luciano Gonzalez finished third. “There are more waves here and it is gustier than in Cabarete,” said Gonzalez, one of the crowd favorites. “This is my first time in Maui and it is a great experience. This is a great event and kiteboarding is a fun life, traveling with my friends.” In addition, Suzanne Mai got herself crowned Queen of the Air, taking first—and the $1,750 prize—from Sheldon Plentovich, last year’s champion. “It was my first time here and I feel privileged,” said Mai, after what was only her fourth international competition, having gone pro a year ago. “It is challenging, though, because it is gusty and there are big waves. I’m really happy to win today. This event means a lot to kiteboarding, so for me today was important.” The Hang-Time Competition almost didn’t happen, but the wind picked up enough for it to go off. Local kiter, Marcus “Flash” Austin, posted an impressive 7.29 seconds aloft. Another local favorite, Julie Gilbert, won the women’s portion with 5.01 seconds, but fell short of the world record she set last

year at 6.48. What separates kiteboarding from other wind sports is that people can go out in almost any conditions. Even though the conditions were not ideal last weekend, it was still a resounding success. According to the organizers, the wind rarely cooperates the way everyone wants it to. “Today’s conditions were challenging and the placing wasn’t necessarily representative of each kiter’s skills,” said Plentovich of Oahu, who lost the Queen of the Air title to Mai. Like most people who try kiteboarding, Plentovich said she got addicted almost immediately after trying it. “The first time I tried my friend’s gear I was hooked,” she said. “The kite feels alive and they all are different with their own personalities.” Plentovich said kiteboarding is also helping her come back from Leukemia treatment.

Rusty & Cookie Medeiros give us the wheel deal at Maui Raceway Park By Samantha Campos The first thing they always do when there’s a crash is grab the wife. Cookie Medeiros knew it, of course. She’d watched other crashes and other wives jump in the truck at the Maui Raceway Park. But knowing and doing are different things. “I had just turned off my video camera and was walking away when he crashed,” said Cookie of the time her husband Rusty crashed his door slammer Flashback. “I turned around and his car was in the air. I was right there so I jumped in the back of the truck. He flipped three or four times at the end of the track—it was right when he passed the trap so he was going 143 [mph] I think—and it flipped and went across the track and skidded on its roof. So when we’re going down to see how he is, we were weeding our way through debris—it was like going through an airplane crash! “There was a guy at the end of the track who was on a motorcycle—parts of the car flew over him—and they didn’t know [he was down there] when they ran Rusty. So when the guy turned around and saw Rusty coming, he got himself out of the way but happened to be right there the minute the car stopped. So that was good but when we drove up, we were like ‘who the hell is this guy out of nowhere?!” Rusty Medeiros was lucky. When his wife and the others got to him, they took off his helmet and shook it and all these rocks came out flying out. “And she goes ‘oh, we can see that you got rocks in your head!’” said Rusty. “And when we looked at it, I started crying. So you know, I just figured that was it.” Rusty and his wife say it took them four or five months to decide to race again. That was three

years ago. Today they’re regulars at the Maui Raceway Park’s quarter mile drag racing strip. The strip sits on the old, dusty 215-acre Puunene military airport. Every third weekend of the month, racing motorcycles and hot rods convene at a drag strip in the late afternoon while a PA system blares out the music of local musician Willie K, Santana and others, along with occasional pre-race interruptions by the announcer. The track gets a couple thousand spectators easy. You see mostly men in their 40s and 50s wearing a wide array of auto and cycle shop tee-shirts walking amongst a slew of custom bikes and tricked-out racecars. One recent night saw a yellow Chevy Nova Supersport with stripes, a ’73 Chevy Vega covered in sponsor names—lots of Chevys, in fact—and a bitchin’ orange Camaro with chrome detailing and an old soda cup in the console. There was an orange Z28 with white stripes and a red Barracuda. Bumper stickers declared “Old Dudes Racing” on the front of one white Pontiac and “Fückenfast” on the tail of another. “If you guys line ‘em up,” the announcer says at 5:30, “we’ll be ready to race here shortly. Let’s go!” A shiny new, silver Intrepid sedan anyone would assume was a rental car got in the lineup beside a Chevy minivan while a woman tooled around in the engine of a yellow Camaro called BADDOG. Another woman drove by in a black Vega named Short Fuse. A VW Beetle joins the lineup in the staging area along with a yellow Barracuda covered in ads called Hit & Run. “If I ever get more money than I know what to do with,” says one spectator practically foam-

ing at the mouth as a purple ’67 Dodge Charger roared by, “I’m gonna get me a Charger!” “You can race anything you want down here!” says the announcer. Anything, as long as you “tech out” or show that your car is safe and legal. He also emphasized that they do periodic safety checks of the track. In one of the first races, a yellow ’67 VW bus the announcer calls “the box that rocks!” is clocked at 79.4 mph. This is the third season racing here for the owner, Bob Rock. He plans on building a ’55 Chevy next year to race along with the VW bus. The announcer warns “there’s no consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal substances on the pit side.” This is a family environment, after all. At the beginning of the junior dragster portion of the event, he advertises the “coveted prize for this evening—a couple of boxes of Maui Wowwee candy bars!” There is a retail merchandise hut that sells hats and T-shirts, as well as ear plugs. There are also two food huts that feature local food like Chow Fun, chili and rice, Spam musubi and lau lau plate. One hundred yards from the starting line, a ’37 Chevy called Rude Awakening lined up next to a ’73 Chevy Vega named Wild Ride. Rude Awakening belongs to Rusty and Cookie Medeiros. The two cars rev their engines in what is called a burnout—a technique used to heat up the tires and get the most traction at the start. The noise is deafening and a huge cloud of smoke engulfs the vehicles. The set of lights between the lanes at the starting line tell the drivers when to get ready and when to go. It is called the “Christmas Tree.” A red light means the racer has “jumped the start”—left too early—and is disqualified. At the green light, Rude Awakening and Wild Ride take off down the track. As the

race ends, they’re clocked at speeds reaching 152 mph. After the race, Cookie and Rusty take the car’s hood off to cool the radiator. They’ve had the car for three years. Both do all the work on the car themselves. In fact, Rude Awakening is the first car they’ve built “from nothing.” “This’ll probably be the car we’ll race ‘til we’re done racing,” said Cookie. They used to race in the ‘70s then started up again in 1993. They’ve been married for 26 years. Rusty, who was born and raised here, is a mechanic. Cookie, on Maui since she was 10, works in the Dolphin Galleries corporate office. Rusty has been a mechanic all his life. He says that when he was a boy, he used to ride his bike to the dump to get parts. “I never had money so I built a Model A,” he said. “I built my own when I was 12 years old. When I was 15, I had a car.” Rusty graduated high school in 1974 and met Cookie the next year when he was racing a Camaro. “The drag strip has come a long way since then,” Cookie says. Maui Raceway Park is the only sanctioned track in the state and is one of the oldest in the country. They get private donations as well as funding from the Maui County Parks and Recreation Department to keep the track running.

“Once you get down there, you’re addicted,” said Cookie. “You don’t even have to be fast to do it. You just have to be consistent.” They’re trying to improve it, too, by putting more lights up every 60 feet and implementing guardrails and other safety features. The raceway board also works with the Maui Police Department on programs like the Junior Dragsters. The idea is to keep kids from racing on the streets by bringing them to the track. “Once you get down there, you’re addicted,” said Cookie. “You don’t even have to be fast to do it. You just have to be consistent.” Cookie worked in the tower for about a year and a half. She used to announce and work the computers. “Did my little Tour of Duty up there!” is how she explains it. “There’s a lot of work involved,” she says, like getting people signed up for races, figuring out who’s handling clean-up and getting ready for the next races. “People will complain about the track,” said Cookie. “They say they’re not spraying it well and not getting good traction. Our goal has always been… to make the car work for the track conditions, whatever they may be.”

“One lane is always going to be better than the other,” Rusty said. “That’s why we fight for number one qualifier.” The Number One lane is the best lane. Every racer fights for that lane. “You want that lane,” said Rusty. “You stay in that lane all night ‘cause you’re tuned for that lane.” “Or you can use that to your advantage to throw somebody in that lane that doesn’t like that lane,” Cookie said, laughing. “There’s a lot of strategy involved.” Strategy, but they always keep it friendly. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone fight down there,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful group of people. Since we’ve been racing—we

raced the Model A with people that are still racing today—it’s interesting to climb those ranks and then when we run brackets, we’re still racing with a lot of those same people. We’ve raced with them over the years and they’re just the best, you know.” “Down at the racetrack, we all get together and we all help each other,” said Rusty. Memorial Day weekend is a big deal for the drag race community. “It’s the only time they give away a Wally,” said Cookie. “It’s a bronze trophy that they give away at the nationals on the mainland.” Last year, Rusty won the “Wally”—or the 2003 National Dragster Challenge Championship award—for the “Quick 8” classification. Last month at the drag strip, a motorcycle wiped out at the beginning of one race just as the other bike flew past. The announcer stopped his commentary as people rushed from the pit to make sure the cyclist was okay. He was. The other racer came back after he finished amidst silence. “That sucks,” somebody said. “He probably ran the best race of his life and nobody cares.” As they carried the racer and bike off the track, the original version of the song “I Think We’re Alone Now” blared ominously over the PA. Not including his own wreck, Rusty has seen a few crashes down at the raceway. He says that the best thing to do once the car gets off track is to “abort the mission” and not try to finish the race, as some guys try to do with tragic results. “I’ve seen guys run into the guardrail because of that,” said Rusty. “They get out of shape and they try to take the throttle. When the tires bite, whichever direction it’s facing, it’s gonna go— you’re not going to win the race.” Cookie saw a bad crash with an alcohol car, which was scary because the flames aren’t visible. It involved a silver Corvette named Jaws. “He turned into the guardrail and it flipped right in front of us,” Cookie says. “So we jumped out of our car and over the fence and it burst into flames. I turned around and said ‘Fire extinguishers—there’s no fire extinguishers!’ So now there’s one on every pole.” Despite his crash, Rusty still races. They explained that the fear never goes away, that you always feel it every time you get behind the wheel. “Every time I go on my first run, that is always in the back of my mind,” Rusty said. “What’s gonna happen? Things happen when you’re going real fast and if somebody spilled oil on the end or something, one tire can just turn… and it’s just gonna turn the car.” “Okay, I am a total novice—an amateur,” I said. “I know nothing, but…” “So why do I do this, hunh?” Rusty asked, laughing. “I don’t know!” “’Cause he’s a NUT!” said Cookie, laughing too. It’s all homemade at Colleen’s Haiku is no Lahaina when it comes to dining out. In fact, you can count the number of restaurants in the area on one hand. But steadily making a name for itself is Colleen’s, a new and improved version of an old local bakery. Having eaten breakfast there regularly for over a year I can attest to the changes: new menu and location, new cook staff and now—finally!—a liquor license. Owner Colleen Nicholas glows like a mother holding her newborn when she talks about “the shop.” Seeking to replicate a 1940’s city bistro atmosphere, her entrepreneurial spirit is fueled by an Irish/Lebanese heritage. That, and the fact that she comes from a long line of fugitives, or as she calls them, “risk takers.” My dinner there recently began with their most popular salad: the roasted beet. Arugula, goat cheese, walnuts, and cherry tomatoes make for a pretty tasty salad. The beets are so tender and mild you hardly know they’re beets. The restaurant purchases most produce from small local farmers in Haiku and Kula and makes an effort to use organic ingredients as much as possible. For appetizers our server Jennifer pushed the beer battered Ono Fish and Chips, which claims to have truly homemade pomme frittes. Craving something a little fancier, I opted for the seared ahi and gnocchi. It was a good call on my part—those little potato things were incredible and the sashimi-grade tuna dipped in a red wine sauce needed nothing further to be delectable. Salads and appetizers range from $8-$16, with dinner entres priced at $15 to $23. For the main course I choose the herb seared Ono “Boil,” which is lightly seasoned and served with more arugula, walnut pesto, asparagus and roasted bell peppers over a bed of homemade fettuccini. The fish was simple but still adventurous. Based on the buzz from the next table over I’m sure either the Papa’s Meatloaf or the Risotto Rossini would have been equally satisfying. Since I’ve finally figured out how to leave just enough room for dessert, all through my meal I was looking forward to the homemade frozen yogurt soufflé. It’s a smooth and creamy pseudo-ice cream served over a shortbread crust and dressed in strawberries and a balsamic syrup. The shortbread and frozen yogurt compliment each other well and brought closure to a meal that exceeded my expectations. Colleen is quick to point out that it’s

easy to forget you’re in Hawaii when you walk into her restaurant. The candles at every table and dark wood decor create a soothing and intimate dinner ambiance. In the background you’re sure to hear something from her eclectic collection of music–anything from the Beatles to Lionel Ritchie to St. Germain. Except for an Easy Rider poster in the bathroom, the walls are noticeably and intentionally devoid of tropical pictures and artwork. The high ceiling may be the only reminder that you’re in an old cannery. Colleen’s is also open for breakfast and lunch. In fact, Saturday and Sunday brunch are becoming quite the scene. You can’t go wrong with the omelets, eggs benedict, breakfast sandwich or burrito, all served for under $8. There are fruit smoothies and a fresh papaya dish for the health conscious. But what really sets this meal apart is what Colleen calls “our special Italian roast coffee, which WILL remain a secret.” Whatever it is, it’s good stuff. Damn good. “None of this would be possible,” said Colleen, “without the help of my brother Bill and my father.” She would like to give most of the credit on the day-to-day success to her staff. The cooking crew, led by head chef Matt Tinder, is given the freedom and resources to put together a light and dynamic menu that changes subtly on a nightly basis. ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY SOPHIA FARIDI

The Braided One Willie Nelson plays the MACC Maui has a lot to offer. Gorgeous beaches, wonderful people, great weather. Too bad it lacks a sophisticated music scene. Oh, sure, there’s the ever-enduring popularity of reggae, the local Hawaiian sounds and—who could forget?—Jack Johnson. But overall, listeners on Maui aren’t given many choices. This isn’t their fault, but it does seem that in the grand scheme of things the international world of music almost always overlooks Maui, passing it over for Oahu or some big mainland city or even another country all together. Except where Willie Nelson is concerned. The guy is a living legend. He’s recorded over 200 albums. Two hundred! That’s 200 more albums than, well, me. And he’s won six Grammy Awards. And he had that great cameo appearance on The Simpsons a few years ago. For over 30 years Willie Nelson and the guitar he named Trigger have been gracing loyal fans around the country with his heartfelt lyrics and country folklore. With his trademark braids and bandana he has become one of the world’s

most recognizable musicians. And now he’s coming to Maui. This Saturday, Oct. 18, he’ll play the Third Annual Montessori Maui Music Fest at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This year’s theme for the fest is Stardust Memories, celebrating the Montessori School’s 25 years on Maui. Did you know that Willie Nelson is 70 years old? Yup. Or that he’s 5’10”, wears a 9 1/2 shoe and a 7 1/4 hat? Or that his favorite food is bacon and eggs? All true, according to the good folks at www.willienelson.com. Virtually alone in the big-time world of Country Music, Nelson has refused to let Maui fall into the abyss of forgotten venues. His undying persistence once brought him out of the depths of total bankruptcy—he had to pay $16 million in back taxes to Uncle Sam in 1993—to the pinnacle of success with this summer’s number one country song, “Whiskey for my Men and Beer for my Horses.” Who wouldn’t love that? Besides, he’s played with the Dave Matthews Band, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Norah Jones, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. Plus, the guy loves Charley’s Saloon in Paia.

Really. Practically lives there when he’s in Maui. Plays there, too. A lot. Played the Montessori benefit show there a couple years ago, in fact. The Montessori event is held every year to raise money for the school here on Maui. The first Music Fest happened just about a month after the Sept. 11th tragedy back in 2001. Many people still talk how the entire audience stood up and joined hands during Nelson’s rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Nelson plays about 145 concerts a year, all over the country. Apparently, believably, they’re all sell-outs. He’s done small intimate shows and those colossal open-air Farm Aid tours. They still do Farm Aid, right? Anyway, all the money he brings in—now that everything’s on the up and up with the Fed, right Willie?—and those tales of stardom are not the reason why the people of Maui have grown to love Nelson so much. It’s because he seems to embrace the island’s free spirit. He doesn’t just play on Maui, he has become of Maui. The Montessori Music Fest will also feature a long lineup of veteran performers like Los Lonely Boys, Willie K, Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, Gail Swanson, Gypsy Pacific and newcomer blues guitarist Vince Esquire. And, of course, the diverse musical fusion of rock, jazz, blues, funk, and latin stylings of The Planetary Bandits, who serve as Willie’s back-up band.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY

The Blanchett Intensity Cate Blanchett Dares To Be Guerin This earnest biopic about Irish newspaper journalist Veronica Guerin (pronounced gear-in) paints a vivid portrait of the courageous and irrepressible woman responsible for bringing down Dublin’s drug barons during the mid-1990s. Cate Blanchett gives a tour de force performance as Guerin under Joel Schumacher’s direction of a no-nonsense script by Carol Doyle and Mary Agnes Donoghue.

Veronica Guerin ★★★★★

The dangers of journalism and its ability to affect social change are at the heart of this brutal story of one woman’s personal crusade against the criminals who oppressed Dublin with violence and drugs until her tragic assassination instigated legal changes that sent her killers to prison. Jerry Bruckheimer (Black Hawk Down) produced this stinging dramatic expose. The striking image of Cate Blanchett’s confident red-tinted face on the ubiquitous poster for Veronica Guerin speaks volumes for the

depth of character that Ms. Blanchett embodies in her intimate portrayal. The challenging stare, chiseled cheekbones and slightly lopsided hair belong not to Cate Blanchett, but to Guerin’s ardent countenance, and the immediacy and quickness of Blanchett’s performance flows like hot mercury from the screen. Blanchett’s casting in the role is intrinsically substantial in preventing Veronica Guerin from becoming an unpleasant cadaverous exercise of a history lesson that many audiences would rather avoid. Instead, the Australian born actress grapples with every thread of selfish and selfless motivation behind her character’s bold actions enabling the audience to gauge the magnitude of Veronica Guerin’s singular personality. We know from the film’s opening sequence that Veronica Guerin will be gunned down at the end of the story. It’s the steps leading up to that tragic moment that the movie covers in close detail, revealing a heroin-corrupted Dublin wherein a young woman journalist became an instrument of justice through her unflinching desire to expose the kingpins at the bottom of the city’s corruption. As Guerin interviews teenaged heroin addicts and various criminals, she leverages her closest

Cate Blanchett as Guerin underworld source John Traynor (Ciaran Hinds—The Road To Perdition) by feeding his celebrity-hungry ego with articles in the Sunday Independent that slyly provoke public attention to the drug crisis at hand. But when Guerin points guilt in a false direction in one of her articles, she realizes that Traynor is misleading her in order to conceal a reclusive career criminal named John Gilligan (played menacingly by Gerard McSorley). It’s Guerin’s fierce loyalty to her civic cause that finds her putting her investigation before her own safety, and that of her husband and child, that raises the most challenging ethical questions of the story. Veronica Guerin, it seems, understood that she would sacrifice her life in order to effect legal changes that would put Dublin’s plague

of drug lords behind bars. She risked herself and her family in a gamble that few people would recognize as sensible or even necessary to bring about transformation. But her story is much more than a cautionary tale about why people should or shouldn’t take aggressive action against seemingly all-powerful institutions of corruption. The point here is that there will always be certain men and women willing to take a stand against injustice and no amount of intimidation or abuse will distract them from their humane quest. Thanks to Cate Blanchett’s fearless portrayal, audiences can be suitably introduced to an authentic Irish heroine who demanded answers that no one else had the guts to solicit. The effect is stunning. Rated R. 92 mins. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

OCTOBER 16, 2003

When It’s Good To Slack Off Tuesday, 7 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua The Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, hosted by George “Hawaiian Renaissance Man” Kahumoku, Jr. (pictured) continues this week with special guest and world-renowned recording artist Ledward Kaapana. As is the case with most things Hawaiian, the joy is not only in the destination or the end result, but in the journey there, as these musicians talk story and share with visitors and kama’aina the culture and humor of good ol’ down-home storytelling along with the traditional music of Hawaiian slack key guitar, ‘ukulele, steel guitar and falsetto.

The Crazy Leftist Sunday, 9 a.m. at Maui Community College in Kahului There are a bunch of Democrats running for the honor and privilege of taking on Dubya in 2004. Most of them—John Kerry, Dick Gephart, Joe Lieberman and John Edwards—are so odorless and colorless you’d think they were Republicans. Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich is different. He’s unapologetically liberal and regularly denounces Bush’s assaults on Afghanistan, Iraq, the environment, civil liberties, universal health care and fiscal responsibility. And unlike Howard Dean, who says much the same thing, there’s no fear that he might turn centrist should the nomination fall in his lap. Kucinich’s visit to Maui is the first ever by a presidential candidate and though he doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning, he’s still worth listening to. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Schoolgirl Gone Bad or Oooh, Uma! Check Film Showtimes, p. 19 I usually don’t go crazy for violent or action-packed films. But I do enjoy a good bad guy or gal every now and then and as far as villains go, I’m gaga for Gogo—the psycho schoolgirl turned assassin that Uma does battle with. And, of course, it’s nice to see Uma turn all vengeful on her bloodthirsty crusade. I generally don’t like the super hype of blockbusters either. But I can’t wait to see Quentin Tarantino’s second volume of Kill Bill. It just kind of drives me crazy that there’s another damn sequel to see in order to complete that annoying cinematic void left by an incomplete storyline and too much popcorn. We’re already waiting for the third installment of Lord of the Rings, Matrix and Ernest Scared Stupid. And now this—argh! Let the nail biting ensue.

Sublime’s Long Lost Cousin Friday, 10:30 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina A well-known Southern California band that has been together for over ten years, Common Sense plays the world pop reggae American funk rock style that is so popular at beachside communities from coast to coast. They currently have a new self-titled release, along with three prior albums. I recently mentioned to a friend from San Diego that they were playing here and he was very excited so I guess that means they’re good. I also asked him what he knew about “Common Sense” and he laughed. Oh, I get it. I guess I don’t know much about common sense either.

ARIES: Are you ready for love? By Sunday,

one or two of Cupid’s arrows have found their mark. Fun and happiness are unavoidable. Being a team player has its benefits. Two can do more than twice as much as one. TAURUS: Steadfast with your nose to the grindstone, you’re ready to get the job done. Restaurant work and all types of service occupations appear. You may be more concerned with health issues. Give to a worthy cause. GEMINI: Joking, jiving and playing is definitely your style. Love can no longer be ignored. If you have children, pay attention to them. Lovers can change for better or worse. Your creativity and artistic abilities need to be put to the test. CANCER: You’ve been depending on family and at times, you are frustrated. Get over it. Sometimes you need to be your own parent. Make rules that are flexible to people’s individual emotional needs. Use your good memory to recall household events. LEO: Walk, swim, paddle or bike to your favorite locale. Share the ride with a friend if you need to burn gas. Learn to speak with poetic diction. This will help minimize the social friction. Friendship is a healthy addiction. You do it all is my prediction. VIRGO: Drink lots of water in the blistering heat. Look for values that reflect earth consciousness and sustainability. A hungry leopard can still be a discriminating consumer. Don’t put junk food in your body. Stick with local fish, veggies and coconuts. LIBRA: The grand finale for Libra time is this week. The need for partnerships, fairness and adventure increases. Relationships deepen. Your career goals and material needs are more in focus. You’re ready to pamper yourself in luxury. SCORPIO: Love and creativity are moving closer everyday. Making peace with your enemies is essential. Finish off any negative karma. Go out of your way to be nice without being phony. People are easily charmed by you. SAGITTARIUS: Seek and you will find. If you can think it, then it’s probably out there. Your luck hasn’t run out yet. It will take some effort to manifest the things that you desire. There’s a big social network of friends that will help you. CAPRICORN: Your work ethic is good, however, it’s taking its toll on you. Your feet need to walk on the earth. Your nose needs to smell some flowers or at least a little coffee. Your power time is high noon. Make friends in high places. AQUARIUS: You’re going to change your financial situation for the better this week. Your relationship to the material world is going through transformation. The world is your playground. You face your emotional limits before the weekend. PISCES: You’re a love bandit ready to rob your object of affection. Enjoy the life of a freespirited bohemian. Creative endeavors will flow with ease. Water sports become more enjoyable. The sun will shine on you again. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Bob Weir 10/16/47, “Judge” Judy Sheindlin 10/21/42, Timothy Leary 10/22/20 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAM CAMPOS

Sarcasm Is Just One More Service We Offer I enjoy a good art film like the rest of the…well, girls. So now I’ve developed a ritual on Wednesdays. After work, I drag one of my best girlfriends to the Maui Film Festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Wailuku. On occasion, we can talk a husband or boyfriend into it if we promise sex or violence…I mean, you know, in the movie. They sometimes show films that are described as being “quietly powerful” or “darkly erotic.” Translation: slow and depressing. But I like that kind of thing. It’s Art. For some reason this week, Katy and I weren’t too sure if we were in the mood to see one of those flicks, even though we’ve never seen a Barry Rivers’ endorsed film we didn’t like. But to the Candlelight Café we went. While we waited in line to get wine, Katy saw a guy she thought was on the David Letterman Show as an audience participant from Maui. “No way,” I told her. “That’s too random.” So she asked him and he confirmed. But c’mon, a hot girl walks up to you batting her eyelashes and asks if she’s seen you on TV, what’re you gonna say? To their credit, the big television star Matt and his buddy Rob happened to be very nice guys so we chatted with them, thereby missing the movie anyway. We decided to head to a new joint called the SandBar in Paia. My inspiring married friends Mat & Rene were holding down the bar, and their drinks, very well. Then Dave showed up and gave me hell, as is his way. Gorgeous gal pals Kirsten, Arica and Tarah came in, but I ditched them all temporarily to sit between Tom and Adam. The discussion turned to the recent Grand Opening of the SandBar that most of us had attended just a few weeks before. Hot Apple Pie performed and BJ was trying to remember what the singer’s name was—something kinda funny like Happy Apple Blue Feather Jensen—but anyway she was awesome. AND she even did the whole divaesque outfit change with hooker boots thing between sets. They had a guest harmonica player that kicked ass. When the band first announced him as somebody who used to play with James Brown, and this fairly suburban looking, sixfoot-four white man stepped up, skepticism swept across the bar like a fine mist. Yes, but when the man started playing that harmonica like he was possessed, jaws started dropping. I think Mat spoke for everyone when he broke the ice by saying, “That white boy’s got soooul!” And really, you can’t get much more soulful than eating corn dogs and drinking 40 oz. Buds out on the back porch at your friend’s White Trash Birthday Party. It was a surprise party for Kirsten’s boyfriend Hans and it was a “YeeHaw!” good time out there in the “backwoods” of Makawao. There was Frito Pie and cheese-in-a-can. A tasty green Jello-mold with fruit and colored marshmallows inside and this tuna-noodle casserole with potato chips crushed on top jus’ like my pappy’s sister’s cousin—her husband—used to make. A couple o’ watered-down bottles of Jack Daniels and lotsa cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Don’t know what happened to that good box wine, though… There were guys named Jethro and Billy Bob in mesh trucker caps and dirty “wife-beater” tanks chewing tobacco. Their trailer trash hussies were lookin’ fine, too, in Daisy Dukes and cowboy boots, faux swollen bellies and blue eyeshadow, big hair all sticky with hairspray. And there was plenty of swamp music—Dire Straits’ “Sultans of Swing,” Ugly Kid Joe’s “I Hate Everything About You,” Blue Oyster Cult—heck, they even played the entire Lynyrd Skynyrd collection. “Yeah, but there’s no ‘Freebird!’” said Bubba. Aw, hell. MTW
