Bookshelf Reviews Where we do judge books by their covers Seeds of Awareness: A Journey Towards Self Realization by Bob Pedersen. 2003, Awareness Publications, Wailuku, HI. www.awarenesspublications.org. $24.99. From the elegant lettering and script that lines the edges of its cover to the colorful and thought-provoking imagery that almost glares at you from beneath the title, Seeds of Awareness is a real stunner. It is, to say the least, one hell of a book. Slightly larger than a sheet of notebook paper, this new hardbound edition of author Bob Pedersen’s global journey towards self realization is durable enough to stand the test of time, yet thin enough— barely half an inch—to slip easily between your copies of National Geographic and the latest Hammond Atlas. That is, if you just want to confine a volume this impressive to your bookshelf. Really, a book like this is meant to be splayed out on your coffee table, where visitors—and by “visitors,” I naturally mean “chicks”—can marvel at your sensitive yet hardheaded worldliness. The front cover is tan, almost the shade of a light-colored wood like pine, with a large, striking photo of a purple

hazy sunset against wispy silhouetted trees. Along the left edge is a dark band, suggesting one of your heavier woods—walnut, perhaps—embossed with stylized but still exotic gold lettering. The walnut motif wraps around the back, where it frames the Pederson poem “The Most Important Journey Embarked On Is Navigated on a Course Leading Inward/All Other Voyages Depart—Laden with Cargo—from This Port.” What does that mean, you ask. How the hell would I know? I didn’t write the damn book. Or read it, for that matter. Hell, I didn’t even crack the spine. But I do know this time-tested fact: Chicks Dig That Sensitive, I’ve-Seen-The-WorldAnd-Now-I’m-So-Wise angle, like when you want to emphasize something meaningless by capitalizing every word. You put this book on display, and you’re making a powerful statement. And what’s especially cool is that the price is written big enough to see on the back, but not so bold that it looks like you’re bragging “I just spent $24.99 on one of them NewAgey tomes.” MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com This is to the parents of some of the students from that private school up the hill. Just because your kid got into that school doesn’t make you somebody special. You are no better than you were before he or she got in there. You are not now the king or queen of Maui. And for those of you wannabes who never got in or whose kids couldn’t get in—quit being posers. You buy all the gear and strut around like you’re something special, too. Well, you’re not! Being a fan or being proud of your school is cool, but treating others like they’re inferior because they’re not part of your clique is not. Now you have the gall to go to others’ schools and tell them how things should be done. It may be hard, but try being a little less obnoxious. From everything I’ve read or heard the queen was a loving, warm-hearted person who treated others with dignity and respect. I think she would be ashamed of you. Want dignity and respect? Try showing it to others who aren’t part of your school.

Going Off the Rails for Freight Train Surfing to save Ma’alaea Jan Roberson is one busy lady. As chair of the Surfrider Foundation on Maui, she’s frantically plannning the 14th annual Ho’okipa Surf Classic, to be held Jan. 10 and 11. It’s a fundraiser for the “Campaign to Save the Waves at Ma’alaea.” Roberson has registrations to fill, prizes to pack and grinds to grill. What’s more, she said, she’s got guests coming and needs to clean her downstairs bathroom. Luckily, leadership is a skill that serves Roberson well. Someone has to take charge on the cause to save Ma’alaea Harbor. Joined with a coalition of environmental organizations, Roberson is poised and ready. “We will do everything to stop the government’s plan to destroy Freight Train,” she said. “We have to act locally. The battle lines are being drawn.” Here’s the issue: Last winter, Congress appropriated $2.3 million to begin construction of the US Army Corp of Engineers (ACE) plan to modify the harbor. Surfrider opposes the portion of the government’s plan calling for adding a

620-foot extension to the harbor’s south breakwall, which is the length of two football fields and wide enough to accommodate a tour bus turnaround. What is the necessity in dynamiting 4.6 acres of coral for the comfort of a Greyhound bus? Roberson doesn’t know. “We’ve gathered evidence that the ACE routinely underestimates the negative impact of their plans,” she said. “They’ve been wrong so many times in the past. We want them to check their facts.” For instance, Roberson questioned just how much trouble boats have in the harbor as a result of stormy weather and wind. “The south swell only breaks once a year,” she said. “How much damage and lost dollars can that really cause?” Surely not enough to derail the fastest makeable right on the planet. This issue has been around for 20 years and keeps coming back, as cultural and environmental groups challenge that the plan will bring more harm than good. More harm may mean eroded shorelines, endangered humpbacks and sea turtles and a ravaged reef.

Ouch. Few dispute that Ma’alaea boat users need some improvements for harbor safety and sanitation. Roberson said her group supports

may be small but we have a lot of strength.” Roberson finds her own personal strength in organizing events like the Surf Classic. She started the contest as a family memorial for her son Justin, a 19-year-old Maui surfer killed in a 1989 traffic accident. “The Surf Classic has a little Maui magic to it,” she said. “It’s a good cause, and it’s in memory of a fallen comrade and loved one.” The contest offers 11 divisions with gender equity. The cost to enter the contest is $25

THE BATTLE LINES ARE BEING DRAWN.” the renovating of ramps, docks, berths, parking, restrooms and facilities. They also agree that the existing harbor should be dredged in order to reduce surge from infrequent southeast swells. But Surfrider Maui is also prepared for a big fight—legal battles if necessary—and plans to hire an independent marine consulting firm as a watchdog. Roberson hopes that through events like the Surf Classic, the foundation will generate more public awareness and funding. “Three years ago, some of us were a handful of surfers with torn shirts looking to save a wave,” she said. “We’ve come a long way since then. for the first division and $15 for additional divisions. All proceeds from the sale of the contest T-shirts (donated by Volcom and DaKine Hawaii) will help Surfrider sustain its Save Ma’alaea campaign. The T-shirt art is from a painting by Haiku resident Amen Hughes, taken from a 1989 photo by worldrenowned surfing photographer Erik Aeder, also of Haiku. Registration forms are available online at the Ho’okipa Surf Classic website: www.surfrider.org/maui and at most island surf shops. For more information, contact Roberson at 575-2716. MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, DEC. 29 Can see from the big “REWARD” ad in yesterday’s Maui News that this whole newspaper thievery thing is getting out of hand. First it was just person or persons unknown junking stacks of the Maui Weekly. Now it seems that some hooligan has taken to swiping Maui News boxes—undoubtedly for the precious fortune in small change the boxes contain. I mean, come on! It’s so obvious that anyone who steals a newspaper box would want the money. Really, it’s so simple to bust open. All you have to do is… What’s that? There’s a police officer at the door? Two of them? I see. Yeah. When I said “undoubtedly” earlier, I really meant “I have no idea why this heinous, heinous crime was perpetrated”… After some really rough times this year, finally some good news for my good friends over at the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB). According to a press release sent out today, the Bureau has finally completed its long-awaited “restructuring!” “We stepped back and took a hard look at the organization from top to bottom,” said Bureau president and CEO John Monahan in the release. “The new structure creates operational efficiencies that make our dollars work harder and puts more emphasis and resources into core marketing tasks.” And they only had to fire 11 people! But have no fear—not only will those 11 be able to compete for six other positions “that are a result of the administrative staff reorganization,” but the “terminated employees will receive severance packages and employment assistance benefits.” Good times! And at Christmas, too!

automated trash trucks turned out to be, um, trash, the county Department of Public Works announced today. That’s right—two high-tech garbage trucks “suffered mechanical breakdowns.” Seems that because the trucks broke down, “1,800 accounts were not picked up” in Kihei yesterday. Ahh… Kihei, where the town motto is “Land of the beautiful coastline that no one can see because of all the timeshares they built 20 years ago”… If I were Maui Weekly Publisher/Editor in Chief Joe Sugarman, I’d be pretty pissed right now. Today’s Maui News does this huge spread on the legendary Olinda Big Cat—and I do mean “legendary”—but never once mentions his name. The gall! Here they go, burying a story about some Wailuku guy who got 22 years in the Big House for leading a drug ring so they can plaster the front page with a retrospect on the Cat, and they don’t even hint at Sugarman’s involvement. They quote plenty of state officials, big game hunters and cranky residents, but never once mention the critical role Sugarman has played in keeping this “story” alive. This is simply not right. It’s not just. We have no problem pointing out that from the beginning Sugarman and Maui Weekly grabbed what thin evidence existed and milked it for all it’s worth.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 31 Is it really the end of the year? I can’t tell—all the warm weather, you know. What clued me in was the Maui News and its big year-end “People who made a difference” front page story. This year they went for individuals “most people probably wouldn’t recognize.” You know, those who “work in anonymity as unsung heroes”— people you might pass by “on the road, at the mall or on the beach.” People who run youth centers or patronize the arts or raise money for the Special Olympics by spending three days on the roof of the Kihei Safeway. Of course, past winners include people you might recognize, especially if you saw them at the beach: Willie

It’s raining so much one of my neighbors is out collecting two of every animal, yet the county has put all of Lahaina south of the civic center on notice to conserve water. That’s because the storm blocked the Kahana intake above Lahainaluna High, which feeds the town’s domestic water treatment plant. Seems the intake is clogged with so many boulders that it’s become, in the jargon of local hydrological officials, “inoperable.” And that it could take a week to reopen it. Now while all this sounds, well, dumb, it doesn’t hold a candle next to the two rocket scientists I saw earlier, walking down Lower Honoapiilani Road during the heaviest of the deluge, each drenched to the skin and carrying a nice big bottle of water.

You know what the Hawaiian people need? Another political group that will “speak for them” and further dilute the voices of those who want true self-determination and independence. As always, the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) stands ready to act. According to today’s AP wire story carried in the Maui News, OHA says Hawaiians have just 14 days to sign up for delegate elections to join a new “aha” or convening group… According to the Netherlands-based Aviation Safety Network—I know, we hear so much from them as it is—2o03 turned out to be the safest year on record for airline passengers, with just 25 commercial airline crashes worldwide. This is down considerably from the global yearly average of 50 crashes. On the downside, my brothers at the Washington D.C.-based Committee to Protect Journalists didn’t do so hot this year, with 36 reporters killed around the world while trying to do their jobs. MTW

But this year’s list is missing a few people who clearly “made a difference.” What about that sword-wielding guy the cops shot after he attacked those people in the Kihei drug store? Didn’t he make a difference in more than a few people’s lives? And speaking of crazies who attack people, what about Kent Smith? He single-handedly pissed off most of the Maui County Council and the island itself by trying to get the state to fast-track his “affordable housing” Pu’unoa Village, which would have planted a couple hundred high-density homes just south of Lahaina. If he didn’t make a big difference, no one did.

However, he is still aggressively proclaiming that he violated no law. Eight Ways To Speak

6. ATTEND A GOVERNMENT MEETING

A political guide for the new year The flash of fireworks in the sky tells us it’s time once again to ponder our purpose on the planet. It’s time for a revolution of the soul. No more navel gazing or wasting valuable time withering inches from your waistline. It’s time for real personal and political involvement in good governance. Politics is the art of the possible. Make a personal pledge to be informed, be involved and make a difference on Maui for you, your ohana, the community and the country. Recognize the interconnectedness of humanity in the global civil society. Here are some steps toward political awareness that allow everyone on Maui to get involved and contribute to a political climate of positive change.

watch the public channels that feature The Newshour with Jim Lehrer. Surf the web to find foreign newspapers or listen to world radio stations. Email listserves and websites are excellent ways to feed your mind a balanced diet.

2. LISTEN This is how we gain insight. Walk around your neighborhood and discuss what issues are significant to your peers. Create a political club in the neighborhood. Try building on the book club but use it to expand your arsenal for political advocacy. Select books to read once a month. Go to movies together or rent films to watch together. Discuss everything. Not only will you learn, but you’ll foster a new sense of community.

4. GET ON TELEVISION Put your own political discussions and documentaries on television. Akaku’s Experimental Channel 54 is perfect for that. This is a surprisingly cheap way to share your views and values with Maui and the world.

1. GET INFORMED Focus first on what makes you curious or sparks your passion about life. While most would consider reading the newspaper and watching television news shows, there are many better avenues to explore for information and insight. Read weekly newspapers, magazines such as Utne, funky zines or

3. WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

5. ATTEND A POLITICAL FORUM OR PANEL

Perhaps to this paper. Everyone is entitled to one letter a month. See your name in fancy fonts when you write your views and beliefs. But take your time—writing is thinking. You want others to share your viewpoint, so articulate your thoughts carefully.

And once again, ask questions whenever something doesn’t make sense. That’s why they’re there. Listen carefully and ask genuine questions. And if there are no interesting discussions taking place about issues important to you, then organize your own forum.

State, local, it doesn’t matter. The agendas are always public. To keep the public away, the meetings are usually dry and boring. But you can use your compassion to humanize the settings. And since this is a presidential year, make sure to watch a presidential debate. Even better, invite your candidate of choice to come speak in Hawaii. And write to elected officials as often as possible. Share your views with them. At least on paper, they hold office to see that your needs are met. If their actions contradict your conscience, don’t be afraid of engaging in a little civil disobedience. Speak at their hearings, visit their offices. You have a right to be heard, but you must speak up.

7. JOIN A POLITICAL PARTY The parties are the traditional mechanisms for involvement, but these days most people don’t identify with or even know what the parties stand for. If the Democrats and Republicans don’t measure up, join the Greens, Libertarians or Aloha Aina. You can also create your own party—all you need are 600 registered voters to sign a petition. Or get involved through Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Volunteer to create programs or projects that help people really understand and revolutionize the political process. MTW

SURF&SPORTS

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

‘Everything’s an Outlaw Sport’ Skateboarding on Maui Cody Clark takes his time setting up the jump. He starts by dragging over one of those heavy white plastic dividers road officials use to close off a lane of traffic. Then he hikes up to the top of the bowl, looks around a bit, watches some teens take their turns on the other side of the street course, then steps on his board. He builds up his speed, jumps off the lip of the ramp, then grinds his board’s trucks against the edge of the divider. But he overcompensates and falls to his right. “I’m sick of this cold!” he yells as he kicks his board across the concrete. Clark, 20, lives Upcountry. So does his 19-year-old friend Hari Evison. Both are tall, lanky young men who spend much of their time away from home. Both spend fantastic amounts of each day skateboarding, often at the YMCA-run Kahului Skate Park. In fact, they visit the Kahului park so often they were shocked to find it locked on Christmas Eve. They consider themselves amateurs, but both have sponsorships. They used to ride for Hi-Tech, but are now sponsored by Extreme Sports Maui. “If you think that you’re good enough, then you make a tape,” said Clark. “But a better way is to get a shop to sponsor you and let them hook you up.” As is typical, the sponsorships net them free gear, but no money. “You just gotta talk to the reps,” said Evison. “I wanna become a rep for Sector 9.” Clark and Evison have been skating five and 12 years, respectively. “I started skating in Oahu with a midget skateboarder named Pancho

Mohler,” said Clark. “Now was he a midget or just a dwarf?” asked Evison. “Dude, he’s small!” said Clark with more than a little exasperation in his voice. “That’s what I’m saying,” said Evison. “Is he a midget or-” “Believe me!” said Clark. “He’s really small.” In any case, Clark and Evison agree that Kahului Skate Park is about the best Maui has to offer right now. They love the vert ramps, banks and the myriad coping that lines the bowls and street course. “That’s the main thing you look for in a park—the coping,” said Evison. “It allows you to grind.” Of course, they could do without the $5 daily admission fee that goes to the Y to pay for the park’s upkeep. “All the skate parks should be like those on Oahu,” said Clark. “They should make them free with no chains.” For all their complaining, Clark and Evison will take Kahului over other parks like Kihei. “Kihei Park is a waste of money,” said Clark. “They could have used the money to put in lights here so this place wouldn’t have to close when it gets dark.” “Upcountry is due for another skate park,” said Evison. “We waited seven years for a skate park, but no. It would be so much better than coming down here. We wouldn’t have to ride in the roads. If you’re not allowed to skate in a county park, then where? A basketball court?” “No,” said Clark. “You’ll get busted for that, too.” Both guys have been busted on numerous occasions. Mostly they just get tickets.

“I’ll fight to keep my board,” said Clark. “I’ll let them beat me before I give up my board.” “Yeah,” said Evison. “But I don’t go into national parks. That’s federal. They’ll pop out of the bushes with M-16s and say ‘You’re not allowed to skate here!’” Making sure their helmets were properly fastened, Clark and Evison went back into the skate park and continued their riding. “I ride down the road to Haleakala,” said Evison. “From the top to the ocean. It’s an outlaw sport.” “Dude, everything’s an outlaw sport,” said Clark. “We just broke the law riding our boards down that road over there.” Usually, Evison said, they can get off with just a warning. But sometimes officers attempt to confiscate their boards.

On His Own Will Kalani Kahaiali’i ever get to build his recording studio? We were about an hour into the interview in his Kihei condo before he mentioned his brother. “My brother is a musician, too,” he said. Then he paused, as if he suddenly realized he’d said too much. “Really?” I asked. “Who is he?” The gears turned in his head. “Willie K,” he said, cautiously uttering the name of Maui’s most famous guitarist. Kalani Kahaiali’i is like that. Sure, he looks like a tough guy—barrel-chested, arms like pile drivers—perfect build for a security guard, which is what he does for a living. And he had a tough childhood, always getting into trouble with the cops, living on his own when he turned 16. But he grew up fast, fighting with the Marine Corps in Desert Storm just a few months after he graduated high school. And yeah, he plays semi-pro football with the tenacity of a NFL veteran. And it’s true that when he drinks he always orders a beer and two shots—tanks the beer, then downs the shots. No question Kahaiali’i can hold his own in life. But right now, this moment, the man who’s lived through so much toughness in life is uncertain. He doesn’t want people to think he’s riding his brother’s fame. He’s going to do this on his own. It’s the way he’s lived his whole life. Kahaiali’i wants to build a recording studio on Maui. And not just any studio, but a proper one. Like they have on Oahu, where he grew up. One with good equipment and a rehearsal room. One where local musicians—some of the best in the whole island chain—can come in and stamp their sounds on plastic. One where kids, troubled ones like Kahaiali’i used to be, can go to work and play and learn. “I want to discover a lot of hidden talents,” he said. “I want to go into a business of my own. I want to help. I want to repay those people who helped me when I was growing up, even though I can’t personally repay them.” But it’s not happening. Not yet, at least. Getting a hold of a storefront in Wailuku that looked real promising fell through. Securing investment is time consuming. The whole thing sometimes seems to be going nowhere…

Like he didn’t go through worse when he was on his own. Kahaiali’i, 30, didn’t want to talk about Kuwait. “It was rough,” he said, rocking gently in a chair that doesn’t normally rock in his living room. “It was not something…” He stopped himself. “I’m proud of serving my country during Desert Storm,” he said quickly. “But I was excited when I got in and I was happy when I got out.” Then he looked over at his wife Rita, sitting quietly against the wall. “She gets real edgy when I start moving around at night,” he said. “Well, it’s only happened once.” Rita half smiled, half frowned. “A couple of times,” she said. He nodded. So what about Wai’anae? What was that like? “It was rough,” he said, showing more than a fondness for that word. “There are stupid things you do when you’re kids. I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. I was really stupid. I was arrested. I ran away from my family when I was 16. I was homeless a couple of times. I figured, oh, if no one’s going to take care of me, then the military would.” Which they did. But all that’s behind him now. Now he’s got a family, a nice home. He’s very lucky and he wants to share it. And he’s adamant about how he wants it done. “We’re not doing this to make a lot of money,” he said. “Music is a cutthroat business. That’s why we want to provide music to people at low cost. And to underprivileged kids. I’ve hung around these people. They go undiscovered. That was something I could really connect with. This would be somewhere they could go. My approach has always been ‘This is the amount of money we have—how can we stretch it?’” The idea for building the first real recording and rehearsal studio on Maui came from Kahaiali’i’s experiences on Oahu, where studios charged his band $50 to practice for two hours. Going in three or four times a week added up to real money. Starting with his friends and family, Kahaiali’i began hunting for investors. “The nice thing is that everyone who’s in on this deal is on the same page,” he said.

“A lot of people out there are only in it for the money.” Then a couple months ago, a realtor he’d engaged found a place in Wailuku. It was rundown and needed a lot of work. But one of Kahaiali’i’s brothers is a construction engineer. He figured he had it made. “We had a spot ready to go—got it dirt cheap,” he said. “The place had been empty for a few years. It was termite-ridden. We would have done all the construction. We were trying to get the paperwork settled, but then someone bid $1,000 over ours. We had no contract, no money down. We were just starting. And the owner took that bid. It’s bad we lost the place but it’s good because it gives us more time to get ready.” Kahaiali’i sighed. “Cost-incentives: that’s the part of the business I don’t like,” he said. “I hate numbers. That’s why we’re going to have a good accountant. I hope.” On his own. Slumping in his chair, Kahaiali’i apologized for being so tired. “It was a bad New Year,” he said. “Oh, was it bad.” While working as a security guard in Wailea during the pouring rain that plagued New Year’s Day, Kahaiali’i “plucked” two people out of the water. “The waves had picked up—5, 6 feet and a shore break,” he said. “We’re all trained in water rescue and the majority of us are ex-military. Everyone wonders why I wear my surf shorts under my uniform. But yesterday, they all stripped to their underwear before diving in, I just had to take off my uniform and I was ready. They were all shy coming out of the water, but I wasn’t. Still, it just drained me.” It wasn’t the first time Kahaiali’i has had to pull swimmers back onto shore. “One time I plucked two old guys out of the water,” he said. “That’s where I got this big scar here. I was getting them off these rocks. It was calm when they went out, but the wind blew them towards the rock. They were in their late 50s. I later found out the way it happened was that one guy went out, then the other went to help and they both got stuck. “So I swam out,” he said. “They made it on one rock but just got drilled. Really busted up. So I said ‘Look man, the only way we’re going to get out of this is if we jump in the water and swim out.’” One refused, saying he was too tired. So all three waited, until Kahaiali’i noticed the waves were flattening. “Ready,” he said he told the guys perched on the rocks. “Because we gotta go now!” All three dove back in. But the tired guy took three strokes, then began to sink. So Kahaiali’i wrapped his legs around him and swam him in. When they got there, everyone swarmed around the older guy, leaving Kahaiali’i alone on the beach, where he nearly collapsed from exhaustion.

“When I got up, this lady asked ‘do you need an ambulance?’” he said. Looking down, he realized that his whole leg was covered in blood. After tying a blanket around the wound, he found Rita and told her to get the car ready. “My wife wanted to take me to the hospital, but I hate doctors,” he said. “I hate blood. I’ve got tattoos, but that’s only on the surface. I didn’t expect a thank you on the beach, but at least a towel from some-

“We’re not doing this to make a lot of money,” he said. “Music is a cutthroat business. That’s why we want to provide music to people at low cost. And to underprivileged kids. I’ve hung around these people. They go undiscovered. one. Anyway, she and I got into a little discussion—‘that’s the last time I save someone in the water,’ I told her. ‘Next time I’ll just let him drown.’” He developed an infection from the cuts on his leg. “I couldn’t eat, I threw up,” he said. “My whole body was like one knot.” Then New Year’s happened. “So last night I called Rita and asked for some dry clothes,” he said. “What the hell?” he said Rita asked him. “I jumped in, pulled some people out of the water,” he said he told her. “I thought you said you were just going to let them drown!” “I was working!” On his own. A little while later Kahaiali’i played a three-year-old video of his old Oahu band First Cut. The tape is of an unpaid gig at a club that had, until they finished their first set, been a morgue. “It was open mic night,” said Kahaiali’i, narrating. “But after we started playing, the place filled up. The owner made me walk out with $400. ‘Please come back Friday,’ he said.” Kahaiali’i said he interviewed well over a hundred people to build that band.

“I got these guys through ads in the paper,” he said. “It wasn’t about making money and finding girls. We wanted to play music. I turned down some good guys. But it was all about the money and fame for them.” The tape rolled on. The band played one Hawaiian contemporary song after another. Every now and then, someone in the audience moved past the camera. Then a longhaired guy appeared and walked straight up to Kahaiali’i in the middle of a set. “This guy was offering us money to play a Santana song,” he said as the video showed him smiling broadly but still strumming a ukulele. Then he began shaking his head vigorously as he backed away. “I wouldn’t take the money.” The guy persisted, then placed the money on top of a speaker. Kahaiali’i said they didn’t know the Santana song, but ended up playing a similar one by Prince. “This is the one thing I really miss in my life,” he said, sitting back, resting his chin on his knuckle, smiling. “I’ve taken a break from it since I moved here and I don’t really know guys.” Then Kahaiali’i retrieved his ukulele, the same one he played on the video. The hand-carved koa wood body is a deep brown, but looks even darker because of the special full-body turtle shell that encases the face. The knobs are made from mother-of-pearl. “I bought it from a guy for $500,” he said, cradling it like a baby. “It was worth at least $800. Now it’s worth $1,200. When I saw what he wanted, I didn’t ask any questions. Other guys offered $400, $300, but if he wanted $500, I would gladly pay it. “My strong point is the ukulele,” he said. “But I play drums, bass, guitar. My first instrument was the trombone. Went through that, the trumpet, tuba and sax before I ever picked up a local instrument.” A few moments later Kahaiali’i is standing over a bookshelf in the hallway. On the top shelf are thick binders marked “Hawaiian,” “Reggae,” “Hawaiian Contemporary” and “Slow and Love Haole.” They hold songs he’s written—at least 200, by Kahaiali’i’s estimation. Kahaiali’i thumbed through an old high school notebook, the paper just beginning to yellow after 12 years. Inside are more songs, written with clear, deliberate penmanship. He showed me one song he wrote on the beach after “wrapping my neck around a rock while surfing.” “I just had all these words in my head,” he said. “I wrote it in about 10 minutes. I’ve been putting all this aside for so long. I keep it all. I’ll dig up an old songbook and try this one. I play songs on the guitar to be at ease. I didn’t move to Maui for stress. I could have done that back home. If this was happening on Oahu I’d be stressed.” MTW

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY DEREK MCCONNELL

Pulehu BBQ Grill Where the Deep South Meets the North Shore

PHOTO: KIRSTEN GUENTHER

The recent Kona Storm has been the closest thing Maui has to winter, which means it’s an excuse to grind hard and fatten up on comfort food. Nothing comforts like a plate lunch, from which you can expect six pounds of steamy, sticky starch, meat and mayo stuffed into a Styrofoam container. And you can count on paying seven or eight bucks, tops. When I heard we were having lunch at the Pulehu BBQ Grill in Wailuku, I figured we were headed for just another local-style plate lunch joint. I certainly didn’t expect it to smell so damn good. The aroma of flames searing well-marinated meat met us way down in Waiehu and led us up Lower Main Street. At the corner of Main and Mill we spotted the source: Pulehu’s outdoor barbeque grill, an enormous funky black metal contraption pumping savory smoke out its stovepipe chimney. This smoke smelled delightfully different. Not kalua, not kalbi, not teriyaki. More like a tailgate party outside the Auburn-Alabama football game: genuine barbeque, Southern-style. We parked by the grill and hurried into the purple shack behind it, anxious to score some of that meat. I pictured the proprietor to be a big ol’ Bubba in a greasy apron, sipping Jim Beam from one corner of his craw and spitting tobacco juice out the other. Wrong again. A couple of Maui babes lovely enough to give Bubba two heart attacks named Cecilia and Rebecca stoke the fires at the Pulehu BBQ Grill. Now what are a couple of local wahines doing playing around with meat and fire? Amazing things, actually. Everything they pull out of that grill is brilliantly seasoned, juicy and slow-roasted to perfection. The menu is short and meat: four kinds of ribs, chicken wings or thighs and two varieties of chopped BBQ pork. The meats are served plate lunch style, with

two scoops rice and a choice of two sides (potato salad, corn, cole slaw, or baked beans), and the plates run from $2.75 to $7.50 depending on what kind of meat you want and how much. We wanted everything, and lots of it, so we ordered Pulehu Combos: a mix of baby back, St. Louis and short ribs, plus a piece of chicken and a scoop of chopped pork. Since there is nowhere to sit at Pulehu (the only downside is that the Shack is too small for tables, and the county won’t allow outdoor seating there), we bolted to the car, hoping to find a dry pavilion nearby where we could get down to business. We never even got the key in the ignition. The contents of those Styrofoam containers were wafting forth, and couldn’t be ignored a second longer. We spent the next 10 minutes in an ecstatic silence, interrupted only by moaning and smacking sounds. In short, the Pulehu combo was the best plate lunch I’ve ever had. What put it over the top was the meat. Every bite was zesty and succulent. The chefs at Pulehu are no backyard amateurs; they know better than to smother their quality pork and chicken in sweet, tangy, or starchy sauces. They let a perfect blend of spices, charcoal, and time do the work for them, and the results are moan-inspiring. Their sides of buttery corn, cinnamony beans, and slaw are also a pleasing change of pace from macaroni salad. We went back in to congratulate the girls and find out their secret. Turns out the magic comes from Moses, their Virginia-born father, who must have the recipe on a pair of tablets somewhere. What Pulehu BBQ Grill is offering Maui is a new hue in the Hawaiian rainbow: the local tradition of the plate lunch with a tasty Southern twist. Ya’ll need get on down there and get some real soon, ya’here? Pulehu BBQ Grill, 1500 Lower Main Street, Wailuku. Call 244-4049 or 244-6159. The Fragile Thread From Bento to Mixed Plate explores Japanese American culture Few on the mainland would equate a plate piled high with two scoops rice, mac salad, tender teriyaki chicken or kalua pig and kim chee with anything other than indigestion from overeating. But for Hawaiians, the mixed plate is an edible symbol of their multicultural state. Mmmm… symbolism. From Bento to Mixed Plate: Americans of Japanese Ancestry in Multicultural Hawaii, now showing at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, gives main dish status to the Japanese American role in Hawaii’s history. The title uses lunch—plantation workers traditionally carried their lunches in tin boxes called bento—to describe the Japanese American’s transformation from the earliest days of their immigration to the current generation over 130 years later. Presented in part by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, From Bento to Mixed Plate gives visitors “an awareness of the overwhelming contributions [Japanese Americans] made while adapting from a very formal culture and learning to get along with other cultural groups,” said Darrel Orwig, the gallery director of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The multifaceted exhibit, which began in 1997 at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. For the past six years it’s shown at 10 different venues around the world including Los Angeles, the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and Okinawa, Japan. Typically, collections of this nature are generated solely from the carefully tended archives of universities and institutions. But in the case of From Bento to Mixed Plate, the bulk of the over 400 different artifacts and photographs displayed came directly from the homes of Hawaiian families. In fact, the largest collection in the exhibit comes courtesy of the Valley Isle, on

loan from the Maui Okinawa Cultural Center. The exhibit skillfully recreates the interior of a 1940s-era house complete with the surfboardlined walls and picnic table seating of an open garage, and a living room filled with framed portraits. Multiple television screens set up in the plantation-style house play pastoral scenes of workers singing in the sugarcane fields, or Issei (first generation) and Nisei (second generation) Japanese Americans talking story about their family histories on the island. The storytelling aspect of From Bento to Mixed Plate is its most significant element, said Arnold Hiura, the exhibit’s curator. “We wanted to reach younger people and teach them about their history,” he said. “Hawaii is changing so fast. The Nisei generation is a last link to the past. They are a bridge. A fragile thread to our history.” The exhibit features an interactive video for children and the creators designed curriculum and workshops to help teachers introduce the material to their classes before they visit the Cultural Center. “It is important for our younger generation because they have no clue about this life,” said Clarence Uehara, the chair of the exhibit’s fundraising arm. “The exhibit shows a lot of memories about what it was like.” There are other less generation-specific concepts the exhibit addresses which are

especially resonant in a state constantly altered by immigration. How different groups of people living in the same place share their culture. How does this sharing makes the inhabitants unique? What were the effects of World War II on a generation? “There’s a lot of learning going on [in Hawaii] that probably couldn’t happen anywhere else,” said Orwig. “This is a documented example of what has come about.” And as the faces of Hawaii’s inhabitants continue to change, identifying and documenting the state’s history increases in significance. “It is important for everyone on the island,” said Uehara. “This is the first time we have something like this. I think it is important for the newcomers [to the island] to see

their background.” “I’m telling all my friends to attend,” said Myrna Hotta Fung, a resource teacher from Wailuku. “It brings back a lot of good memories. It is very well done, very authentic. I told my kids they have to go. It is good for people from the mainland also—it’s not just for Japanese from Hawaii. It is a whirlwind tour of Hawaii and all its characteristics.” MTW From Bento to Mixed Plate displays at the Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts and Cultural Center, through Sunday, Feb. 15. The Gallery is open Tues.-Sun, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Free admission. Research assistance by Kylie Costa.

Self Destruction Tupac Shakur shows his hand from the grave

Tupac: Resurrection

★★★★★ Tupac: Resurrection opens with Tupac revealing that his mother was an activist member of the Black Panthers in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, doing jail time while he grew inside her womb. It’s from this milieu of social awareness, passed on from his single mom, that Tupac developed his analytical ability to look beyond his own social constraints of poverty and crime. Indeed, Tupac’s close-knit relationship with his mother is evidenced to have been a significant ele-

ment in his sometimes paranoid and vengeful psychology. That she was attracted to abusive men and suffered from drug addiction informs Tupac’s erratic behavior that included “beating up” the Hughes Brothers for silently firing him from one of their films and then bragging about it on MTV. It was a mistake that cost Tupac 15 days in jail and sent a message of instability to other film directors, but later paled by comparison when Tupac was sentenced to prison for his association in a rape at a Manhattan hotel. There are gaping holes in Tupac’s articulate and sensitive narrative about such things as his brief leap as a prophet to his fans before realizing that he was unequipped for such a demanding responsibility. It’s clear that Tupac believed, like many of his rap peers, that putting the violence and injustice he witnessed around the country into his songs would bring quick and helpful attention to the crisis rather than advancing it further. But regardless of any conceptual misunderstanding, Tupac’s foolish “Thug Life” rhetoric (and self-promoting tattoo across his stomach) only recommended to his fans an imagined lifestyle of violence that Tupac came to suffer from firsthand when he was shot five times at a Times Square recording studio. Tupac repeats that he only ever spoke from his heart, but by the end of the film that mantra seems to be a symptom of his inability to govern the intellectual side of his personality rather than any significant symbol of credibility. Like Lenny Bruce, Tupac Shakur was a confrontational martyr who valued his freedom to say, “I don’t give a fuck.” Ultimately, this was a flawed philosophy that could not withstand the dichotomy of fame in conjunction with Tupac’s predictably variable nature. Tupac: Resurrection succeeds in showing Tupac Shakur as a bright and talented but inexperienced young man desperately in need of fatherly guidance. For all of the evils of

Tupac poverty, police violence and social injustice that Tupac was concerned with, it seems his lack of a father figure in his personal life was the American social ill that affected him personally the most. When Tupac asks what’s the difference between him saying ‘I don’t give a fuck’ or Patrick Henry saying, ‘Give me liberty or give me death’?, the explicit answer is two-fold. On

one hand there’s the context that Tupac was not an elected public official acting at a moment of social responsibility, but more importantly, Patrick Henry was making an ultimatum as a metaphor for everything he believed in rather than relinquishing his beliefs. If Tupac could have lived longer, I’m sure he would have realized these values. Rated R — 115 mins. MTW

The winning conceit of producer/director Lauren Lazin’s flamboyant documentary about the life of Tupac Shakur is that the late rapper’s voice is the primary source the audience hears. Yet the dulcet tones that Tupac speaks in, go only a short distance in disguising the self-obsessed torment that the charismatic artist wore on his sleeve. With the help of Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur, Lauren Lazin (VP of News and Docs at MTV) has compiled a wealth of home videos, photographs and letters from private collections, along with in-depth interviews, scenes from Tupac’s movies and concert footage, to give insight into the tragic icon’s explosive life. Tupac’s past tense delivery gives a ghostly quality to the documentary, as when he reflects on being shot as something he always knew would happen, or when he talks of knowing that he would eventually go to jail. The movie is a riveting document of a conflicted artist unable to escape the violent confines of ‘90s rap culture in spite of his promising efforts as a film actor.

A Punk Farewell to AOV Saturday, 6:30 p.m. at Hope Chapel in Kihei It turns out that this will be Absence of Void’s (pictured) last show on Maui for a very long time. You know what that means… A reunion tour in February! Well, no, probably not. But this night, you can also check out punk bands Fire Never Faiding, Empty Handed and Olivia (of Oahu and just back from their mainland tour), all for only $5! If you need more help in locating Hope Chapel’s whereabouts, or are uneasy with the definition of “punk” these bands will be—is it nu punk, emo punk, pop disco funk punk or what?—just call 879-3853.

Mbira is Mmm…Good But NOT tonight, Thursday, 8 p.m. at Casanova Mbira is a sacred musical tradition, as well as an instrument, that has been performed for over 1,000 years by the Zezuru tribes of the Shona people in Zimbabwe. The unique music interplays a basic cyclical pattern with numerous melodies and contrasting rhythms, resulting in rich polyphony and melodic variation. Traditionally, mbira is used to contact ancestors and ward bad spirits, but is desired mainly for "peaceful mind and strong life force." And tonight, we were SUPPOSED to become the international center for these gifts of the world. But no. "Due to current legal procedures," Forward Kwenda—one of the most respected virtuoso mbira performers from Zimbabwe—and 30-year mbira veteran Erica Azim "were not able to obtain Visa to the U.S.A in time for the scheduled flight out of Africa." So don’t go to Casanova tonight. Or go, but just don’t expect to see what should have been a great show.

The Fab Five instruct their willing students in the niceties of fashion, food & wine, interior design, grooming and culture—all with martinis in hand and breaks for dancing. After all, there is no better girlfriend than a gay man when it comes to these matters.

That Planning Guy Thursday, Jan. 15, 5:30 p.m., The Pioneer Inn, Lahaina You see him on TV a lot, sitting off to the side in the Maui County Council hearing chambers, explaining this and justifying that. He’s got a lot to say because he’s pretty controversial. He’s Mike Foley, the county planning director. And he’s been spending the last year making a lot of powerful people angry, mostly because he’s taken his Maui Tomorrow/slow growth roots seriously during his last year in office. And now you can see him live at the LahainaTown Action Committee’s annual town meeting, where he’ll give the keynote address. I think he’s planning on saying something about planning. For more information call the Committee’s event hotline at 667-9194. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

KOZMICBREEZE

SHARED HOUSING, ROOMMATES

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: Real ability is what makes soul. This is a good week to deepen your appreciation for creative people who know how to play together. Be one of those people. TAURUS: Your good fortune continues to roll down. Travel plans should work out. Frustrations will be resolved. You’ll be able to move on with your life. Career pressures begin to settle. Make plans for a more active social life. GEMINI: Even during ego-trying periods there is the need to have fun. The dark side of magic is not to be played with. Return blessings for curses and bank on good karma. Luck needs to be appreciated, but not pressed. Change is coming. CANCER: Some of the weight that was on your shoulders gets taken away. A little bit of friendly flirting will help you to mix things up. Making peace is easier when you’re not lost in lust. Learn to be honest without being inflammatory. LEO: Keep focused on your heavy workload as you drive things to completion. Thursday and Friday feature the glorious Leo moon. Get ready for a well-deserved break. Being relaxed while keeping busy is your gift. Make time for love. VIRGO: Friday evening through Monday features the Virgo moon. You’re weird enough to know how to have fun during Capricorn time. Try out for a play, audition for a musical gig or enter your art in a studio. Find love while helping others. LIBRA: Dark times require warm thoughts. Communicate the things that you would like to see happen. Continue to act on creative impulses. You’re the lover that everyone wants to have in his or her corner. Emerge from your cocoon. Tuesday and Wednesday are yours. SCORPIO: While you’re out making friends, be sure to let the good friends become family. Find a deeper way to value the people that you’re intimate with. Don’t underestimate the power of your social connections—especially this weekend. SAGITTARIUS: If clearing up debts and making way for personal stability is your goal then you’re in the right business. Show others that you have what it takes to perform under pressure. Getting rid of things you don’t need can be helpful. CAPRICORN: Are you on the supply side or the demand side? Hopefully you have a little of both. When you have enough extra to supply others in a pinch, yet are needy enough to sympathize with your workers’ demands, you’ve become the ultimate business partner. AQUARIUS: Using your creative talents to the fullest is going to take a steady and relentless effort. Be spontaneous when it comes to material resources. Your powers of persuasion remain extra strong. Laugh at the darkness. Celebrate failure as a teaching tool towards wisdom. PISCES: Karma launches you into an unpredictable situation. Your ability to go with the flow must be tempered with discernment. Hold your cards. Speak once and listen twice. You’ll probably have a great time this weekend. HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS

Way Too Much Sex Ah, New Year’s Eve—the parties, the champagne popping, that midnight kiss to ring in the luck of the new year… Yeah, I didn’t do any of that. This year, it was just me and Dick. You know, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on TV. Good golly, that guy’s old. All was definitely quiet on New Year’s Day. Jen and I sat around and watched episode after episode of Sex and the City while we dumbly “waited out” the rain. As I watched the water collect like the Caspian Sea on the bikini-top roof of my jeep, we decided to get a ride from Sonja and Ryan to Lahaina Fish Co. for some nice, hot chowder and Ahi Katsu. Later we decided to brave everyone else’s bad weather driving to see The Company at the MACC. It was a great film about—well, it wasn’t really ABOUT anything but it had some beautiful ballet performances that Jen enjoyed because she’s a little dancing machine. She practically pirouettes in her sleep. When we got back into town, we ordered Chicken Caesar Salad from Lahaina Coolers, had a drink at our friendly neighborhood tavern (take a guess) and went home to watch 200 Cigarettes. I love the rain. On Friday, Jen and I geared up to see Spearhead at the Lahaina Civic Amphitheater. Because the storm had not yet let up, we dressed accordingly for a Woodstock-themed event, full of mud and mayhem. We brought warm clothes and rain gear, but when Michael Franti was mesmerizing us with his performance, clothes came off and we reveled in the rain, getting soaked to the core and most likely, looking like a couple of drowned rats. It was cool. Then Kim and I shared our one backstage pass to go and check out that scene, hoping to hang out with Woody Harrelson and partake in a little hemp advocation. Afterwards, we changed into dry clothes—which just got drenched again as we ran from the parking lot to the club—and went to Breakwater. As we introduced ourselves to the bartender, he put two and two together and made Jen her standard cocktail—Bushmills and water—without asking. Apparently, he’s been reading this very column and knew much more about us than we, in our highly addled state, could comprehend. Flattered but shocked, we sat in stunned silence. At least, until our next cocktail kicked in and then we worked the crowd. This week, the first of the last eight episodes of Sex and the City aired on HBO. In celebration, Jen and I hosted an intimate gathering of Sex and wine, Brie and shrimp cocktail, smoking and dancing girls and one requisite gay man. So really, aside from the Brie and shrimp cocktail, just like any other night at the Sugar Shack! Since she had just watched the entire fourth season the day before, Michelle explained in shocking detail and with much sympathy to Lezlie about Charlotte’s (played by Kristin Davis) difficulties getting pregnant. And Kevin gave himself props on the ability to watch a football game followed by Sex and the City, all while in the company of hot girls. It is this last detail that has his straight friends constantly questioning his sexuality. Apparently, heterosexual guys think that if you say you’re gay, it’s a surefire way to get laid by chicks. Silly, silly heteros. After we consumed three bottles of wine in the half-hour time period, we all decided to AB Taxi it to the Sly Mongoose. There, Jen ordered Pizza Hut while Kevin and I became the top winners in Wordster on the Touch Screen. Then Satan walked in the bar and promptly ordered a round of shots for our two tables. Well, after that, what else could we do but go to Bamboo? That’s where Satan mysteriously slipped away into the darkness. Our drunken crew dispersed soon after, so Lezlie and I went home and crashed.
