A graduate of the world-renowned Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, Arien Sherman marries his own brand of technical perfection to Gordon’s unique tropical wedding styling to create beautiful wedding photographs. Arien started working with Gordon in 2006 as an assistant and quickly went on to start shooting his own weddings for the company. Originally at Brooks to learn cinematography, Arien soon discovered that his hobby of still photography would become his life’s work. Raised in California, Arien relocated to Maui two years ago from San Francisco. Once here, it didn’t take him long to learn most of Maui’s most breathtaking hiking trails and scuba diving spots. His appealing low-key and laid-back personality helps his couples relax and enjoy their wedding day photo shoots.

Ian Ian’s obsession for photography began at the age of four, when he received a college zoology book from his mother. Throughout his life, he’s marveled at imagery of wildlife, architecture and portraiture. When the time came to enter college, Ian simply couldn’t decide on what form of art to master, so he chose Multimedia as his major at The Art Institute of Los Angeles, taking in everything each field had to offer. Ian relocated to Maui and quickly connected with Gordon Nash in 2005 and the talent of the pair turned out to be a perfect match. After two years spent under Gordon working in the lab, Ian finally decided it was time to pick up the Nikon hardware and try his hand in the field under his guidance. His unique history and extensive knowledge of post production gives Ian a unique approach to photography. Uniting technical mastery with artistic flair, Ian brings a new vision to Maui wedding photography.

Our wedding day was one of the most memorable days of our lives and we could not be happier with A Paradise Dream Wedding for helping shape our perfect wedding. The coordinator from the get-go was great, by both phone and email, she was fabulous and so patient with all our requests. She really went the extra step to allow us to include all the details important to us within our wedding, as well as meeting with us the day before to review it all- as per our request. We were drawn to APDW by the photography on the web site and it does hold true to the end result- Ian Shepherd, our photographer, was beyond amazing!!! He truly captured our day as we had imagined and he went above and beyond for our wedding. His emails were so attentive and genuine, and his amazing work proves why he is a part of such a talented

group. He took his time shooting our requested shots and had awesome follow up communication. Kimo Kirkman was our minister and we truly believe no one else was meant to perform our wedding. His genuine words and calming voice set for a perfect ceremony! Tim O’Hara, our guitarist was just right! Jean Muldoon did awesome on hair and makeup- she was wide awake at 6 AM and ready to go, she executed the look I requested even better than the inspiration photos I provided to her- just fabulous! The flower bouquets requested were right on, and the petal aisle and reception decor by Della Peacock were amazing! She was such a shining angel in the mist of flower planning frustration and her gorgeous table arrangements surpassed my highest expectations- I smiled inside when our day had finally arrived and all my “interior designer obsessive decor” nerves were calmed by the beautiful table Della had set! Our day was so special to us, not only for our personal commitments and having had such a perfect wedding, but because of the people who helped make it happen. We’ll always remember “our Maui spot” and all the individuals above who were a part in our very memorable day. THANKS APDW!!!!!!

aving a wedding in beautiful Hawaii is the ideal way for a couple to start their life together. You may be a visitor to the Islands, drawn to our year-round warm and sunny weather, or you may be a resident wishing to celebrate a most cherished

moment in the place that you call home.

For any person to lawfully marry in the State of Hawaii, a license for that purpose must be obtained from an authorized agent (HRS §572-1.7). Once the license has been issued, there is no waiting period before the marriage can take place. The marriage license and the marriage certificate are two different documents. The marriage license permits a marriage to take place. The marriage certificate indicates that a legal marriage has been performed. The marriage certificate is prepared and filed by your licensed marriage officiant or performer with the Department of Health.

aui is blessed with year-round temperatures in the 80’s, so feel free to come anytime throughout the year. We do weddings 12 months a year,

seven days a week. The best time to come to Maui would be the winter season which is November through April, which tends to have more rain (especially on the North and East sides of the island). But winter also brings the biggest waves and an annual visit from the humpback whales. The least ideal time of year to come is during peak travel season—from December 15 through January 15—when flights cost more and the beaches are busier. If you are looking to spend less on accommodations, the best time to come is between April and mid-December, when rates can be less expensive.

aui beaches are hard to beat when it comes to beautiful tropical island scenery. Even a simple wedding on the beach is romantic and spectacular, by its very

location. If you are considering having your wedding on a beach, you need to be aware that one of its great advantages, that it is public and free – can sometimes be problematic. Others may be using the beach for recreational purposes, or there may be other weddings going on in the distance, so there is no way to guarantee total privacy. However, other beach users are usually very respectful and supportive of the romance and beauty of weddings, and most often steer clear of the immediate vicinity.

The Cove.

This small, secluded beach in South Maui is

called “the wedding beach” by some because it is one of the most picturesque beaches on any island and perfect for smaller weddings. The Cove has everything—palm trees, lava rock, islands right off the shore, and a beautiful sandy beach. On weekday mornings, the beach, with its turquoise waters, has few visitors. By sunset, most recreational beach users have gone back to their hotels to prepare for dinner, and there can be a wedding at either end of the beach. Since the beach is small, we limit wedding attendance at the Cove to no more than 15 people, including bride and groom.

North Maluaka. North Maluaka is at the north end of the Maui Prince hotel and is close to Keawalai Church, another wedding site which is described below. If you like, you can have your wedding at the church and go to North Maluaka for pictures.

South Maluaka. Fleming Beach. The southern section, nearest the Ritz, is not heavily used. Very convenient if you are having your reception on the West side of the island.

Kapalua Bay Beach.

A lovely arc of a white sand beach,

Kapalua is a popular West Side location. There is a condominium close by, so it may be crowded at times.

Wailea Beach.

This is the beach directly in front of the Four

Seasons and the Grand Wailea Hotels. In the middle of the day it can be crowded, but at sunset it’s a great beach for weddings. In the same area as the Four Seasons Beach, the beach in front of the Grand Wailea has lots of lava rock—very picturesque!

Churches: Quaint Hawaiian Style

A church is a good choice for people who wish to honor certain religious beliefs. It’s also a good way to make sure that you’re not going to be rained on. Churches tend to be less expensive, so you can have an indoor private location for much less money than at a hotel. Usually there are nice beaches close by for photography after the wedding.

T

owering Question The

What cake fits your fantacy?

I

n Medieval England, guests to a wedding would often bring buns and breads that were stacked in a mound in front of the bride and groom. A 15th century French baker, upon his visit to London, conceived of implementing an order to the stack and icing was devised to coat the cakes to keep them

from drying out, and thus the wedding cake was born. The cutting of the cake symbolizes the couples first joint task in life. The tradition of feeding each other cake represents the commitment the newlyweds are making to one another. Hawaiian cakes are often made with locally grown fruit such as guava, lilikoi, coconut, banana, pineapple, macadamia nuts and coffee. Island themed cakes are also quite popular, with edible seashells, and real or sugar flowers. Your coordinator can help you select just the right cake for your wedding.

In a beach wedding, most couples like to be barefoot, giving them a more playful and laid-back feel. But if that’s not for you, there are plenty of options. The bride might consider sequined flip-flops, a pair of delicate sandals, or even something more sensible—white wedding sneakers! If you must have high heels, save them for after your beach ceremony—they just don’t work in the sand. Grooms usually feel comfortable in leather or suede slippers, or a pair of lightweight loafers. We can assist you with the whole gamut-- from traditional white gowns and black tuxedos, to flowery sundresses and aloha shirts. Bring your own attire from home, or find what you need from Maui’s local formal wear shops. We partner with the best retailers—offering you customized service and all the latest designs and fashions. For the bride, we usually recommend something simple and elegant that you can move around in; long trains usually don’t work well on the beach. Grooms usually look best in white or cream colored linen pants and a classic silk shirt. Or if you love formal wear, white satin and tails look great against a sandy beach and blue sky. Just keep in mind: it can get hot. Choose something you’ll be comfortable in, so that you can relax on your big day.

Lei Exchange One of the oldest traditions in Hawaii is the giving or exchanging of leis. At weddings, this tradition is just as important as exchanging rings. When you place a lei around someone’s neck, you express “aloha” for that person—your love, care and endearment. You can make your wedding traditional and romantic by including your own lei exchange in the ceremony. As you place a lei around your beloved’s neck with a

Transportation/Limousines With the laid back lifestyle that Maui provides, the last thing one would expect is a traffic jam, but it sometimes happens. Afternoon beach weddings have great light, but also collide with Maui’s “rush hour” which happens around 4 pm. Many ministers and musician’s have tight bookings, so weddings must start on time.
