KA WĀ HO`OLAULE`A HOLIDAY 2021

Your barefoot holiday on the Island of Hawai'i We know spending time together is the greatest gift, so gather the ohana and head to the cinematic Kohala Coast this November and December, where we’ve crafted a world of festive wonder that plays out across sun-kissed landscapes and under starry skies. Twinkling lights wrapped around swaying palms, a driftwood Christmas tree and local Hawaiian carolers singing yuletide classics to a strumming ukulele infuse the holiday season with the magic of an aloha spirit every year on the island of Hawai’i. Savor the beauty of the Island of Hawai'i from your private lanai as you ponder which adventure best suits the day. Enjoy the laughter of loved ones as you decorate holiday cookies, learn to make flower leis, or explore local land and sea routes once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. Or gear up for a family-friendly competition of outrigger canoe and stand-up paddle races, round robin tennis tournaments and pro-led surfing lessons. Evenings come to life with artisan night markets, starlit movie screenings and barefoot dining and dancing to curated music sets. There’s no better time than now to start a new holiday tradition. Ho’okipa, the spirit of Hawaiian hospitality Aloha Kākou, I still remember the first time I visited Mauna Lani and met our Kahu Hānai Danny Akaka, known to everyone as Uncle Danny. To him, I was just another guest, but in that moment, he welcomed me like family, clasped my hands and prayed with me, and then told me "I'll see you soon." From that day onward, I knew in my heart that Mauna Lani was my home. Since then, countless others have shared with me their own stories of this inexplicable sense of home whenever they walk through these doors. I attribute this phenomenon to Mauna Lani’s strong sense of Ho'okipa, the Hawaiian word for hospitality. Stories of this legendary hospitality begin with Mauna Lani’s previous landowner, Francis I'i Brown, who was known for his generous parties and catering to his guests’ every whim. Often, he would ask his guests what they wanted for dinner, catch it fresh, and then prepare it for them at his oceanfront cottage. These traditions continue to this day as I watch our Kainalu pro-waterman, Bullet, take guests out snorkeling and canoeing to explore our treasured waters, returning with invigorating stories of whale sightings before sampling Chef Matt’s fresh catch from that day over memorable dinners at CanoeHouse, and listen to our turtle caretaker Pi’i’ share Beach Boy stories as unforgettable sunsets fade out over our one-of-a-kind coastline. No matter which holiday you celebrate with us this year, we’re ready to help create new family traditions and special memories with you and your loved ones. With warmest Aloha,

Sanjiv Hulugalle General Manager & Vice President Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection

Talk story with Uncle Danny Danny Akaka, Mauna Lani’s Kahu Hānai, or resident expert in Hawaiian history and culture, is in high demand. No matter how many people file into the Hale I‘ike cultural center, each one of them receives the full benefit of his beaming smile and gracious attention. Uncle Danny, as we know him, is the embodiment of aloha: generous, unhurried, and brimming with love for Hawai‘i and her people. Diplomacy runs in his genes. His father was a respected U.S. Senator, his uncle coined the phrase “aloha spirit,” and his grandmother couldn’t let a tired taro farmer pass by her house without offering refreshment and a shady place to rest. Pull up a chair and let Uncle Danny regale you with mo‘olelo (stories)—tales drawn from the ancient past and his own colorful life. Start with any question: what did the Polynesian voyagers eat while sailing across the world’s biggest ocean? What does the name “Kalāhuipua‘a” mean? The answers are guaranteed to stir your imagination and enrich your experience of the Islands.

Be together while savoring the Island of Hawai'i’s culinary Treasures The mouthwatering scent of a Hawaiian luau greets you before you arrive at your table, soon to be spread with kālua pig, poi, fresh fish, lomi salmon and tropical fruits. As the sun melts into the Pacific and the stars begin to flicker, a mesmerizing hula performance free flows to the rhythms of a ukulele and steel guitar. Holiday feasts at Mauna Lani showcase Hawaii’s culinary treasures sourced from its sacred land and sea. Delight in an ocean harvest at HāLani, authentic tasting menus at CanoeHouse, music-themed dining experiences, and flights of locally brewed beers and Kuleana rum at Dinner & a Movie Night. Learn to mix your own Mai Tai and kid-friendly mocktails before capping off an evening with stargazing and roasting smores at a beach bonfire.

Twist on a classic

Say aloha to the Lani Tai, our twist on the classic Mai Tai. Our secret? House-made Macadamia Nut Orgeat syrup! Pair yours with ocean views, live music and an all-new dinner menu in HāLani.

Be together while experiencing active adventures in nature The family that plays together stays together. Why not add a dose of friendly competition to the holiday season and relish the beautiful outdoors with fun fitness challenges from tennis tournaments to canoe races. At the Surf Shack, meet with Kainalu’s lifelong watermen and women who will help you sharpen your paddling, surfing and snorkeling skills. Or enlist onsite pros to help you refine your tennis backhand, golf swing or downward dog. On the fitness center’s open- air terrace, test your endurance with high intensity workouts with sweeping ocean views, while the little ones live it up at the Holo Holo kid’s club. The Island of Hawai'i is full of breathtaking beauty. Go on an all-day hiking adventure along historic Hawaiian Kingdom trails to take in the island’s rugged coastline, cerulean seas and striking black beaches.

“Twilight at Kalahuipua‘a,”

This night of storytelling, music and perhaps a little hula, is hosted oceanfront at the Eva Parker Woods Cottage, built by Frank Woods, the descendant of John Palmer Parker, who founded Parker Ranch, one of America’s oldest and largest ranches.

Be together while experiencing a new way to celebrate steeped in Hawaiian beauty and culture Infuse your holiday with a sense of heritage and adventure. Uncle Danny, the resort’s beloved local historian, will orient you to Hawaii Island’s colorful culture as you stroll through the property’s ancient fishponds filled with silver fish, eel and endangered sea turtle hatchlings reared to return to the wild. Or take a guided hike through Kalāhuipua‘a Historic Park to explore more than 3,000 petroglyphs and over 40 natural caves formed by lava flows. The scenic coast is an ocean playground for nearly every watersport under the sun, while on land the spa offers authentic Hawaiian therapies like the stress-busting Lomi Lomi massage passed down through generations.

Oasis within an oasis

The Kalahuipua’a Fishponds are the 15-acre spiritual center of Mauna Lani, where mullet, milkfish, shrimp and other sea life were raised for Hawaiian royalty.

In two to three years, they grow to a size deemed appropriate for release into the wild. During the honu's stay, guests from around the world get to visit and learn about the sea turtles.
