Ho'okipa
THE SPIRIT OF HAWAIIAN HOSPITALITY
Aloha Kākou,
Time spent together is precious, and the holiday season establishes a nostalgic sense of childlike wonder that is amplified when it is shared. During this magical time of year at Mauna Lani, joyousness and aloha beam from Hale ‘I’ike to the Surf Shack, where palm trees wrapped in twinkling lights sway like hula dancers in the wind.
With a legacy spanning decades, Mauna Lani is rooted in the stories of Hawaii’s past. From the 1980s to now, multi-generational guests visit our hale (home) away from home in the pursuit of one-of-a-kind experiences infused with aloha and ho’okipa, the Hawaiian word for hospitality.
The degree of Mauna Lani’s ho’okipa began with famed golfer and previous landowner, Francis H. I’i Brown. Often, Brown would ask guests what they’d like for dinner and subsequently catch it fresh in the nearby shores of the Eva Parker Woods Cottage. To this day, we endlessly aim to embody the warmth that Brown once shared with all who crossed his path.
Timeless traditions like these continue to live on at Mauna Lani. Our Kainalu Pros prime bespoke journeys with wisdom in the same way Uncle Danny embodies aloha as he preserves the legacy of Mauna Lani through rich storytelling. Matt and Yuka Raso welcome guests to CanoeHouse like they would their home, exuding an unconditional love for their guests and their craft.
No matter which holiday you celebrate with us this year, we look forward to sharing ho’okipa with you and yours this festive season. When you stay at Mauna Lani, you’re welcomed into our ‘ohana forever.

E komo mai, or welcome, to a world of festive wonder that transpires across sun-soaked seascapes adored by generations of families and friends.
Nestled in the heart of the Kohala Coast, Mauna Lani is a sacred oasis infused with the warmth of the aloha spirit. It is here that lifelong memories are cultivated amidst picturesque backdrops painted with cotton candy clouds, white sand shorelines and wide-open spaces which invite the outdoors in.
The acoustic strums of ukuleles and steel guitars fill the Halau hālau, where classic holiday tunes mingle with the lively buzz of laughter as another day in paradise begins to unfold. Holiday cookies, warm pastries and 100% Kona coffee pair well with barefoot walks from the Great Lawn to the Surf Shack, a gathering place perched atop expanses of green grass and inviting waters that sparkle. Gear up for surf competitions alongside friends old and new, or sunbathe on the Surf Shack deck as you develop knacks for lei making and coconut frond weaving. Venture along the Fisherman’s Trail to Mauna Lani’s storied South Course and visit Hole No. 15, where golden light melts into the ripples of the horizon and saturated sunsets change color before your very eyes. Starry evenings come to life with inspired dinner menus, fireside s’mores and a collective aura of joy as magical moments and time well-spent together set the tone for a very merry holiday on the Island of Hawai’i.
Kalāhuipua'a HONORING THE LAND
Piko, the Hawaiian word for “center,” has a number of different meanings depending on the context in which it is used. Most often, it refers to one’s navel– a place of purity where new life begins. As Mauna Lani is situated in the piko of Hawaii’s five great mountains, the distinct and eternal spirit of this place makes for transformational experiences that are conducive to renewal and growth.
What comes with Mauna Lani’s particular placement in the center of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Haleakalā, Hualālai and Kohala is a tangible sense of mana (spiritual energy), which attracted icons of Hawaii’s past. Built in 1983 and rooted in the soulful history of ancient Hawai’i, Mauna Lani is a special and storied place nestled within the fabled fish pond, Kalāhuipua‘a.
Bordered by crystal clear waters and palm-fringed walking paths, Kalāhuipua‘a contains seven ancient fish ponds spanning the length of roughly 15 acres. In eighteenth century Hawai’i, King Kamehameha and the ali’i (royalty) nurtured the ‘ama’ama (mullet) and awa (milkfish) found in the fishponds of Kalāhuipua‘a, leveraging their abundance as a primary source of nourishment.
Much like the ways in which Kalāhuipua‘a sustained the ancients, our souls are fed by its rich history and indescribable magnetism. After visiting the fabled fishponds as a college student in the 1970s, Uncle Danny Akaka was awestruck.
“It was like stepping back in time,” he said. “I felt like I’d arrived in paradise.” Now, Uncle Danny shares the stories of Kalāhuipua‘a with people of the present, letting its stories live on through historic walking tours and tales of old Hawai’i.
A living museum with origins as early as 250 A.D., Kalāhuipua‘a carries timeless stories shared from generation to generation. As you walk this age-old coastline, breathe the rejuvenating salt air and swim in the nearby crystalline waters, you, too, can experience the same mana which captivated those of Hawaii’s past.
