Maura O’Docharty I am inspired by the goal of sustainability and admire handmade craft. I have a B.S degree in Visual Communication and Design from San Francisco State University with a strong foundation in Product design.

expression dedication These redux posters were created with the use of a limited color scheme, a reduced image of a paintbrush, and short text. These posters were created using Adobe Illustrator, Indesign and hand drawn elements. The goal was to explore the creation of a reduced image, text placement, and two colors. I was inspired by pop art and comic art.

A dedication is a measure of gratitude, a profession of admiration, a declaration of one’s kinship to another.

EXPRESSION Auxochrome — Chromophore. Diego. She who wears the color. He who sees the color. Since the year 1922. Until always and forever. Now in 1944. After all the hours lived through. The vectors continue in their original direction. Nothing stops them. With no more knowledge than live emotion. With no other wish than to go on until they meet. Slowly. With great unease, but with the certainty that all is guided by the “golden section.” There is cellular arrangement. There is movement. There is light. All centers are the same. Folly doesn’t exist. We are the same as we were and as we will be. Not counting on idiotic destiny.

There is movement.

This design is a more playful graphic that demonstrates movement and excitement.

There is light.

I wanted the design on the opposite page to depict a concentrated interaction of two strong personalities.

I D DE

There is cellular arrangement.

The converging circles and use of a pair of paintbrushes pair with the use of text. The text is a love letter from Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera who were both artists.

reconstruct WHY IT’S IMPORTANT PROBLEM STATEMENT Design a website that encourages 20-30 year olds to reduce the reliance on plastics.

PURPOSE STATEMENT Exposure to plastics is associated with the increase in cancers of the reproductive system.

Portfolio 2014

The abundance of plastics and plasticizers we have created has led to effects on the environment, the health of humans and countless other animal species. I want to create awareness of a problem that flies under the radar and directly effects our health over time. I believe the hardest part about communicating this issue is that it is invisible and difficult to measure. Unlike other public health concerns such as smoking or alcoholism, contact with plasticizers and BPA goes undetected. There are many published articles, journals and books that address this topic and provide extensive amounts of data to refer to. There are also an abundance of specialists I can contact for more information. I am very passionate about improving the plastic problem we have created on this planet and believe that focusing on bringing to light how these toxins effect us close to home will inspire a sense of understanding and urgency to address these issues.

76% believed that BPA is safer than BPA free products

BPA free plastics are more harmful than plastics containing BPA.

16% believed that BPA free products are equally harmful than products contatining BPA 8% believed that BPA free products were more harmful than products containing BPA

13% believed that plastic alternatives weren’t as reliable

Why would/have you hesitated switching to plastic free alternatives?

35% believed that plastic alternatives are too expensive 52% Other

The sampled group has very low awareness of the effects that toxic plastics have on our reproductive systems.

The insights recorded by the sample group were insightful and covered a wide variety of concerns. Only a small percentage were concerned about reproductive health issues. The main reason for not changing their habits was that plastic alternatives aren’t as convenient as plastic choices. The problem doesn’t outweigh the convenience.

Portfolio 2014

• “Willing to adjust habits.” • “Finding options is hard.” • “Easy to use. readily available.” • “Less immediately convenient.” • “Availability and convenience.” • “Plastic free options require more resources to produce.” and are heavier and less efficient.” • “Stores must offer products feee of packaging to be completely free of plastics.” • “Plastics are waterproof, which often times can be very handy. plastics are often times also easiet to get a hold of.”

My translation of the original ad includes a graphic tee style with layered type to reflect the smudged, unkept handwriting of the subject. PLANT PODIUM This plant podium is an easily assembled laser cut plant stand that is sculptural, biodegradable and allows for efficient water use. The plant podium even has the option of having another plant situated on the platform to catch the water from the top plant. This is good for eliminating the excess water that would dry up and not be used.

27th Letter The 27th letter is a combination of two letters from the English alphabet that form a new symbol. This symbol represents my name and my identity. My initials “M” and “O” are combined to form the dynamic zig zag into the infinite circular shape. Not only did I want to use this project as a way to experiment with type and form a logotype, I also wanted to experiment with movement, tension, order and patterns. My 27th letters were made using Adobe Illustrator.

The 3 manufacturing systems

I used Illustrator and the laser cutter to create templates for the five lamp shades.

I used Illustrator to create the cage for the light that was cut on the CNC router.

Sketch-up was used to design the two 3D printed parts.

The Tenderlo Mapping the Char Our investigation of the San Francisco neighborhood, the Tenderloin, for things unseen concluded in mapping our senses. The map displays the prominate smells at three intersections. Each intersection was also measured for noise loudness: low, meduim, high. We concluded that although the Tenderloin has a bad rep, we see that some of the intersections are just a bit more smelly than others.

Portfolio 2014

Maura O’Docharty |

Patterns were made that represented each smell and the varying populations of each block we studied. We wrapped the foam blocks with the corresponding pattern. We made swatches to display the patterns. We cut foam to wrap in the patterns. They were 3 cm, 6 cm, 9 cm long based on the intensity of the invisible attributes of the block that we were tracking.

Our first stages of planning. We determined what we were going to be researching and our goals of the project. While walking around the Tenderloin, we noticed that every corner and every cross street was dramatically different. We wanted to measure these differences using patterns and graphs.

Portfolio 2014

There is a panoramic picture of each intersection we studied along with swatches that shows each pattern with what they represent written on the back of each swatch.

Maura O’Docharty |

The buildings are wrapped in the corresponding patterns then attached to the poster that includes yellow circles which represent epicenters of each block we studied. The louder the block was, the more concentrated the yellow circles are.
