FOREWORD

Standing O goes to ...

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

The news stories in the Ormond Beach Observer often feature some of the same names each week — elected officials, business leaders. This month, we asked some of those leaders to nominate someone else who doesn’t always get recognized for what they do. And so, while last week we revisited 2018 in a time line, this week is our Standing O Edition, where you can meet some of your neighbors who impact the community — often in ways most of us never hear about. A second group of stories in this edition introduces you to the nominees for Volusia County Teacher of the Year — one nominee from each school in Ormond Beach. Each one has passion for helping children get excited about learning — and about life. They deserve a standing ovation as well. Two of the teachers said things that stick with me. First is Kimberly Dodd, who said she thinks of her students as the leaders of the next generation. I have five children of my own (one teenager). I also I have the privilege of helping many teenagers at my church, and I am struck by the potential each one has. What can I do to help them achieve that potential? Another quote from a teacher that made an impact on me was from Yahaira Lopez: “We’re not here to be average. We’re here to be awesome.” It’s not something she made up; it’s a saying that is promoted at Osceola Elementary School, where she works. But it shows me that she is helping to reinforce a culture of awesomeness at the school, and I’m sure her students are learning from her example that it’s OK to be enthusiastic about doing good things. Thanks to all the people who are featured in this edition, and thanks to the readers for giving us your time throughout 2018. Let’s make 2019 awesome.

“[Rebostini’s] work is often unnoticed as it happens behind the scenes and behind closed doors, for the victim’s protection and privacy. ... She has a huge heart and her work is needed.” JESSE GODFREY, Ormond Beach Police Chief

very morning, Evelyn Rebostini goes around the Ormond Beach Police Department and says good morning to everyone she sees. It’s part of her daily routine — performed in between looking at the cases from the previous day and cleaning up after the officers in the kitchen. As the department’s victim advocate, helping people has become second nature to her. Regardless of whether she’s helping a victim of a crime, or giving advice to a citizen unsure of what steps to take while dealing with a problem, Rebostini is always ready to lend a hand. “I just do onto others like I want them to do onto me, and I treat people with respect no matter what walk of life they come from,”

Rebostini said. She’s also the vice president of the Victims’ Services Coalition of the 7th Judicial Circuit. That helps her coordinate with all the other advocates so that she’s able to refer victims to the right programs. If she doesn’t know the answer to a question, she makes a phone call and finds out. Rebostini has been a victim advocate since 2004. She used to be a K-Mart manager, but she injured her back. It was through the vocational rehab program set up through her worker’s compensation that she obtained her paralegal degree. While she was studying, Rebostini kept asking her professor for volunteer opportunities, and he sent her to the State Attorney’s Office to help in victim advocate services. Just four months later, she was offered a job. Rebostini stayed there for 11 years before coming to OBPD. Her love of helping others carries over from her job to her daily life. When she goes through the McDonald’s drive-thru, she reg-

ularly tells the clerk that she will pay for the car behind her. And as her grandson was growing up — Rebostini and her husband raised him since he was 10 — she would clean out her own pantry to bring groceries to his friends in need. “It’s just what I do,” Rebostini said. She explained she likes to lead by example, especially with her children and eight grandchildren. Her first great-grandchild is on the way. Rebostini also keeps in touch with victims whose family members have died as a result of a crime or traffic accident. She makes sure they receive an invitation to Halifax Health’s annual National Day of Remembrance. Recently, she called a 98-yearold woman who she helped connect with resources just to wish her a Merry Christmas. She also recognizes everyone’s birthday in the Police Department. The city sends out a monthly list, and Rebostini makes sure to put a card in their mail slots about a week in advance.

“It makes me feel good to be remembered, and I want them to be remembered as well,” Rebostini said. “I just think it’s really important, just that little thing.” Since she started working at the Police Department, Rebostini also upgraded the room she uses to meet with victims. Before, it had finger printing equipment in one corner and stark walls. Rebostini wanted people to feel comfortable, so she painted the room, added colorful decals to the walls and had new furniture brought in. A basket of donated toys and blankets sits underneath a table for any children the officers come into contact with. “I’m always thinking outside the box so that we can help, not just help people when there’s a crime, I want to help citizens in Ormond Beach,” Rebostini said.”I want our agency to stand out — that we’re here to help all citizens.”

“Gloria and her husband Ray have worked so hard to help literally hundreds of thousands of people in our area! When Ray and Gloria see people in need they respond with generosity and love.” BILL PARTINGTON, mayor

Gloria Max and her husband, Ray, were late getting to work at the Jerry Doliner Food Bank one day recently. They didn’t get there until 6 a.m. They are still putting in long hours, six days a week, at the facility at 470 Andalusia Ave. in Ormond Beach, even though Gloria Max continues to fight ovarian cancer and has many side effects. “I’m so glad I have a job,” she said. “If I had to stay home, I’d be a basket case. I get energy from helping people.” When people think of those who work to benefit the community, the first thought often goes to Max, who was named 2015 Citizen of the Year by Citizens For Ormond Beach, a local nonprofit organization. On Dec. 4, 2018, the Ormond Beach City Commission issued a proclamation to honor Gloria and Ray Max for their service. The proclamation states in part: “She is the driving force behind a food bank that helps feed approximately 25,000 people a year, and a backpack and school supply drive that has equipped nearly 109,000 needy children since the mid-1990s. She has helped many others, including raising money to build bomb shelters in poor neighborhoods of Israel, and providing two fire responder trucks there; providing cash assistance to victims of natural disasters, such as hurricanes Florence and Michael; and organizes an annual holiday turkey drive locally. She works 16-hour days at the food bank with Ray at her side.” Max, 78, and her assistant are the only paid staffers. Her husband is one of about 40 volunteers.

FIGHTING CANCER

It was 2015 that Max was diagnosed with cancer, and there was a chance she would only live a year. But treatments were successful, and the cancer went away. “A lot of people were praying for me,” she said. Unfortunately, the cancer returned, and she was diagnosed again a year ago. She once again had chemo treatments, and a few months ago, the doctor placed her on a pill, which has a co-pay of thousands of dollars. “It makes you very sick but keeps tumors from growing,” she said. “You lose your memory and you’re in a fog. I have to think, is the quality of life worth it? Is the expense worth it? My husband says yes. So, I’m taking it.” ‘THE ELDERLY ARE REALLY HURTING’

Max is worried about having funds for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank in 2019. In recent years, many people donated for disaster relief. Now, the food bank fund is short. “If people could donate, we’d appreciate it,” she said. Max has close-up view of the local economy. Even though things have improved, she said there are still many people who need help, especially those in their 40s and 50s who can’t find a job. “They are not being hired like the younger generation,” she said. “The elderly are really hurting. They live on Social Security and everything has gone way up. It’s hard for them.” There are also many people working for minimum wage who struggle to feed their fam-

ily and work several jobs. Max also organizes community events, such as the communitywide sabbath set for Jan. 25 at Temple Beth El, 579 N. Nova Road. She said all religions are welcome. ‘IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOT BE AFRAID’

In October, Max organized a service at Temple Beth El after 11 people were murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in October. It was attended by 700 people. “What was so nice, 60% were not of Jewish faith,” she said. “It was really a magnificent service. It was beautiful to see all those people.” In the wake of the shooting, she spoke to someone who was afraid of having a service, but she believed it was needed by the community. “It’s important to not be afraid,” she said. Max has been receiving help from the community. The Chabad women of the Chabad Lubavitch deliver home-cooked meals to her every Friday. “These sweet people who have cooked for me for two and half years — these women, with children and lots of things to do, take the time to make food,” she said. “They are the most fabulous meals that you’d ever want to see. When you know a delicious meal is coming to you, it just gives you hope.” For information on receiving food or making a donation, call 386-672-0294 or visit jewishfederationdaytona.org.

Bridget Bergens, a health care practitioner with her own company, BWell LLC, said personality tests have shown her to be a “helper.” That seems accurate, because in her business, she coaches clients to lead healthier lives; and in her volunteer work, she organizes toy drives for needy children and fundraisers to fight cancer. A recently completed, annual project was a holiday party where toys were collected. Each year, Bergens and the Ho Ho Ho Girls, 14 local women, arrange a party at Oceanside Country Club, and admission for the invited guests is an unwrapped toy. This year, there were 410 attendees, bringing about 2,000 toys, which were distributed to 20 different charities. “They were very generous,” she said. “We were able to make Courtesy photo

a lot of children happy.” They get lists of needed items from the charities so they can suggest what toys to donate. MAKING STRIDES

“Bridget goes out of her way to help people and make their lives better and she never wants any recognition.”

Bergens’ mother died of breast cancer on New Year’s Day, 2010. “It’s still hard,” she said. “When you go through that, it touches you.” An event close to her heart is the Making Strides Walk to fight breast cancer. She arranges a team of walkers each year called the Feisty Fighters. Among the walkers is her best friend, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and is now is a survivor. Many people not touched by cancer join the walk to show their support. “It’s an amazing event,” she said. Bergens is the only representative on the Volusia/Flagler Board of the American Cancer Society. The regional office is located in Orlando. She also helps coordinate the Relay for Life in Flagler County.

SUSAN PERSIS, city commissioner

THE ARTS

Her volunteer work also includes arts and culture.

She’s on the board of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens. She likes that OMAM offers grassroots programs for children and adults such as art classes and other offerings such as mindfulness meditation. In her work, she has done studies on the brain and found that art awakens a part of the brain. She’s also on the fundraising committee for Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach. “I’m from Louisiana, so I organized the Mardi Gras Ball,” she said. She admires the Peabody because of its programs to expose all income levels of children to art. The culture of a community is important and improves overall well-being, she said. “We all need art,” she said. She believes her volunteer work was inspired by her parents, who were very generous. Giving back to the community leads to fulfillment and a sense of well-being, she said, and she benefits, as well. “I live in the community, so it impacts my life as well,” she said. he Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach had a busy 2018. Members completed about 1,100 hours of community service by helping local schools with beautification projects, including power washing, painting and gardening. They also helped senior residents in moving and fixing fences. The club is small, though still growing, and most of all, the members have a lot of heart. “We didn’t have a lot of money, but we had strong backs,” Rotary Club member Alex Youngblood said. The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach was first established in August 2015. It’s the second Rotary organization in the city; the original all-male Ormond Rotary Club has been around for decades. Becky Parker, president of the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach, said the original club is often at capacity, and this Rotary Club also allows both men and women. One of the programs the club has spearheaded this year is Downtown Ormond Beach Rotary Reads, where members help third-grade students at Ormond Beach Elementary with reading. Volunteers meet with them for an hour every other week, and read books with and to about a dozen students. In December, the Rotary Club gave all the participating children a free book. “We have a great time doing this,” Youngblood said. “The kids are great. They read very well, and they have progressed a lot this

quarter.” The program was created after Parker, who is also the community engagement and events coordinator for Ormond MainStreet, had a conversation with thirdgrade OBE teacher Francesca Knutson when the Rotary Club was at the school performing an outdoor service project. The club has also set up vegetable gardens and planted a memorial tree at the school when one member died. The next big OBE Rotary project will be to construct an outdoor teaching classroom. The club will be partnering with the Ormond Rotary Club for that one, too. “It’s kind of fun to see all these little things that we’re doing create a picture,” Parker said. Whether the members are helping the PACE Center for Girls with their grounds, raising awareness for the local opioid epidemic, or raising money for Provision Packs, Youngblood, who retired from the CIA, said that what he loves about Rotary Club is being around people who are focused on doing good deeds in the community. Parker said Rotary is fun. “I think sometimes the image of Rotary can be old and stuffy, and it’s really not,” she said. Worldwide, the Rotary membership has grown to 1.2 million. Because of that international footprint, Parker said that eventually, when the club grows larger, they would like to get involved in a larger-scale project. For now, though, the Rotary Club will continue to focus on the immediate needs of the residents. “I think we just feel so fortunate to live in Ormond Beach, and to be fortunate that we want to help those who are less fortunate,” Parker said. “Even though we live in a beautiful community, there are those right in our neighborhoods that have needs.”

“Alex Youngblood has helped our school in so many ways. He led the rotary volunteers at our last Saturday school grounds improvement event moving several raised garden beds, power washing our front walkways, spreading mulch though out our campus... We have been blessed!” FRANCESCA KNUTSON, OBE Teacher of the Year

History is important, Shapiro said, because it offers a sense of culture and identity. ADVISING THE CITY

Shapiro said he serves on the advisory boards because he enjoys working with people and helping the city gain insight into ideas and issues to make proper decisions. He believes that the City Commission carefully studies the decisions of the advisory boards when they vote on a matter. An example of an item before the Quality of Life Board was the development of Andy Romano Park. Other items include suggestions from citizens, such as having kiosks where people can borrow or leave books. Shapiro said a coastal city in Florida, such as Ormond Beach, is bound to have growth, and maintaining quality of life is a balancing act. He said all citizens should stay informed, whether it’s by media or attending government meetings. “You should know what’s going on in the city,” he said.

I don’t mind doing something crazy like putting on a costume.” Showing support to students is something Coleman has been familiar with since he first became a teacher 20 years ago. Currently, he teaches fifth grade at Pathways Elementary. Every year, his class is often full of avid readers, he said, and Coleman has accumulated a set of Kindles for them. The measured words of Dr. Philip Shapiro can be heard as he directs the discussion of an issue as chairman of the Quality of Life Board or Historic Landmark Preservation Board; or as he talks with passion about the history of the area in his work with the Ormond Beach Historical Society, where he served as president in 2018. At the 2018 State of the City luncheon, Shapiro was presented with the Mayor’s Award for Civic Engagement. In 2011, he received the Anderson-Price Memorial Award for outstanding service in historical preservation and restoration on behalf of the Ormond Beach Historical Society. He points out that local history goes back 3,000 years, with artifacts of ancient people found along the waterways. The story continues through Colonial and Territorial periods and the settlement of Ormond Beach. The Three Chimneys site on West Granada Boulevard is an important historic site dating from around 1803; it’s owned by the state and managed by the Ormond Beach Historical Society. Shapiro has headed up the Preservation Committee for the past 10 years. Currently, the historic site that needs to be watched is the MacDonald House on East Granada Boulevard, he said, which is operated as a welcome center by the Historical Society. The goal of the society is to restore the second floor so the building can be used as a museum. Grants would be needed for the cost; the building is owned by the city. “It’s an ongoing and worthwhile project,” he said.

Ryck Hundredmark: an opportunity to make a difference Volunteer puts in 500 hours a year.

Observer WAYNE GRANT REAL ESTATE EDITOR

Those who know Ryck Hundredmark know his broad smile. But he’s normally behind the scenes at events such as Granada Grand Festival of the Arts, Riverfest, or any event sponsored by Ormond Beach MainStreet, making sure things are going smoothly. As a volunteer for MainStreeet since 2006, he recently estimated that he has helped with about 20 events. But that’s just part of his contribution as a MainStreet volunteer. He’s also been part of the revitalization of Granada Boulevard over the past decade. “He has championed the creation of the Ormond Beach Arts District, chaired the Ormond Beach Farmers Market Committee and worked tirelessly on long-term strategic planning, membership and merchant outreach,” said Julia Truilo, executive director of Ormond MainStreet. He sits on all four of MainStreet’s standing committees: Design, Economic Development, Events and Organization and served two terms as president. Ormond MainStreet, founded in 1995 by a group of citizens, works to create a vibrant downtown, defined as Granada Boulevard from State Road A1A to Orchard Street, including areas north and south of the boulevard. When deciding where to retire, Hundredmark visited the area because he had relatives nearby and fell in love with the city. He liked the fact that it’s a small town, yet convenient to larger places and attractions. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Hundredmark retired to Ormond Beach 12 years ago but got busy right away, volunteering with MainStreet. In his career, which included running

The MainStreet work is challenging, yet fun, he said. Looking back at improvements over the years, Hundredmark said the refurbished buildings were made possible in part by the Building Improvement Grant Program, administered by MainStreet along with the city. He also admires the redesigned medians. Things are still happening, he said, pointing to the new Starbucks and Lucky’s Food Market on East Granada Boulevard now in the works. “There’s been a lot of overall improvement in this area,” he said. It seemed to start about 10 years ago, with the landscaping and other enhancements at Rockefeller Gardens, he said. Volunteering for the organization has been a good fit, he said, and he has no plans to completely retire anytime soon. He wants to stay active and not become sedentary. He recently read a recommendation for how many steps a senior should take every day, and he said he exceeds it by far. “He gives more than 500 hours each year,” Truilo said. Hundredmark is excited about the future, after seeing the fiveyear plan by MainStreet, which includes a trail on the east side of the river that will tie in with the County’s River to Sea Trail program. Hundredmark has also been on the city’s Brownfield Advisory Board and Board of Adjustments and Appeals, as well as Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Committee. He was also a board member of the Ormond Beach Historical Society, helping with their historic preservation efforts. His volunteer work earned him the Mayor’s Award for Civic Engagement at the annual State of the City luncheon in October 2017.

Chase Doucette is starting for the Sandcrabs in his first season of high school soccer. RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

When Seabreeze’s boys soccer team squared off against American Heritage in the Class 3A state championship game on Feb. 24, Chase Doucette was in the stands at DeLand’s Spec Martin Stadium, cheering on the Sandcrabs. He would have rather been on the field playing for them. Doucette, who has played soccer since the age of 5, attended Seabreeze High School his freshman year but didn’t get to play for the Sandcrabs. He was a member of Jacksonville Armada FC’s Developmental Academy team and had been since the eighth grade. He was ineligible to play high school soccer as a result. But entering his sophomore year, the now 15-year-old Doucette had to make a choice. In order to play for the DA, he would have had to join an older age group. He chose to play for the Armada’s Elite Clubs National League team — a lev-

el lower than the DA — which finally allowed him to play for his high school team. Doucette, who is also an Ormond Beach resident of 13 years, has become a star for the Sandcrabs since. “I love the competition, and I love the teamwork,” he said. “It’s just a lot of fun to play.” Doucette didn’t really have a strong connection to anyone on the team entering the 2018-19 season. He knew a few of the players and attended last season’s games sparingly. He made it a priority to fit in and show everyone what he could do at tryouts in November. “I’m a leader when it comes down to it,” he said. “I like to pass. I don’t like dribbling a lot. I’m more of a team player. And I love communicating and showing my aggression.” His new teammates came quickly to his side, especially senior defender Will Crotty. “All the team loves me and loves how I play,” Doucette said. “They’re always supporting me.”

Doucette found his groove with the team almost immediately. He starts in the Sandcrabs’ backline on a defense that has surrendered two goals so far this season. The Sandcrabs, who are 14-1, were scored on in a 1-0 loss to Eau Gallie on Nov. 6 and a 6-1 win over crosstown rival Mainland on Dec. 17. “I love playing with this team. It’s a real family,” he said. “We all work together, and we’re here for each other. When somebody messes up, nobody yells. We just support each other.” Finally playing, and starting, for his hometown school is a dream come true for Doucette. But there’s also pressure — a lot of it. The kind of pressure that comes from playing for a program that’s been to two straight state finals and expects nothing less of returning to that stage. “Of course there’s pressure,” Doucette said. “But I know we can do it again. We just have to be confident.”

Seabreeze’s Kepner gives teens a new start Karen Kepner is inspired by ‘The Kite Runner.’ JARLEENE ALMENAS NEWS EDITOR

Karen Kepner is not one to be in the spotlight, but she’s led an eventful life. According to her resume, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and a minor in Italian studies from Florida State University in 1988. After obtaining her master’s in English education from FSU in 1991, she began her teaching career in Orlando, where she taught journalism. Throughout the years, she taught at Taylor Middle-High School, Ormond Beach Middle, Campbell Middle School and, where she is now, Seabreeze High School. She’s also traveled to Africa, won second place in a watermelon-eating contest, wrote a novel, held the hand of her aunt as she took her last breath, and rescued three dogs. Kepner also did mission work in Costa Rica. But her passion is through a ministry called New Start, which works with troubled teens. “We strive to bring a message of hope and restoration, meeting with the kids twice a week, providing them with pizza, mentorship, and often, just listening to their struggles as they attempt to free themselves of addiction,”

Seabreeze High School Teacher of the Year Karen Kepner.

Kepner wrote in her resume. “It is a beautiful experience to watch a teen, who has lost his or her childhood and given up any hope of a future, begin to discover a new way in life.” Kepner is inspired by three things in her life: her students, her colleagues and words. She especially takes to heart words from the novel, “The Kite Runner,” which talk about forgiveness. “These words. . . are a reminder of how I am inspired by the poetic beauty and profundity of words, in the power that words have to both heal and destroy, connect and divide, but ultimately to reveal truth and meaning.”

Mainland High School Teacher of the Year Kimberly Dodd

Mainland’s Dodd: teaching the leaders of the future Kimberly Dodd graduated from the same school where she now teaches. JARLEENE ALMENAS NEWS EDITOR

Kimberly Dodd has taught almost all of her entire teaching career at her alma mater: Mainland High School. Teaching, and returning to Mainland, was never on the radar after she graduated. Dodd became a business major at Stetson University. However, after a couple of years, Dodd said she realized that the only classes she enjoyed were those involving math. So she switched majors — and schools. “While I never imagined myself as a teacher, now I can hardly imagine doing anything else,”

“It is a beautiful experience to watch a teen, who has lost his or her childhood and given up any hope of a future, begin to discover a new way in life.” KAREN KEPNER

The

Dodd said in a statement. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in math education two and a half years later. She began her teaching career as an adjunct professor at Daytona State College. One year later, landed her first high school position at Mainland, and Dodd has been there ever since. Currently, Dodd teaches precalculus and AP calculus, a teaching schedule she has kept for the last 14 years. And when she’s not busy making sure her own students learn their coursework, Dodd is helping other kids do the same. She tutors everything from Geometry to Calculus 2 in her spare time. “I am fortunate to be teaching the most promising students who will be the leaders of our next generation,” Dodd said.

Tara Fatta’s favorite thing about being in the education industry is being around young people and never having the same day twice. “My students inspire me constantly, and I am truly grateful to be able to build relationships, provide guidance, and watch them grow,” Fatta said in a statement. Fatta, a guidance counselor at Ormond Beach Middle School, said she feels honored to have been nominated for Teacher of the Year among her fellow educators because she works with “such amazing and dedicated people.” Although less common, Fatta said it is not unusual for a guidance counselor to receive the nomination. She decided to become a guidance counselor because of her interest in psychology and the motivation behind human behavior, she said. She still uses many of the strategies she learned during that time. “The experience I received from working with students with learning and emotional disabili-

For the past 10 years since she has been teaching, Erika Binford’s daily goal is to always display compassion, kindness and positive energy when her students enter her classroom. “The main reason that I teach is to inspire,” Binford said in a statement. “My ultimate goal is to provide a sense of hope and be an inspiration to all the students that cross my path.” She said she wants each student to feel comfortable and safe. Binford, who teaches social studies, has discovered that students are more productive in a caring, comfortable and safe environment, and she looks forward to her students making “real-world connections” in her class. She also encourages their creativity. Teaching allows her to guide young adults into “empowered, engaged, creative, and responsible, productive citizens,” she said. Before she arrived at Hinson Middle School, Binford taught ninth-grade world history at Seabreeze High School. She now teaches sixth-grade world history and seventh-grade civics. If she could share some wisdom with her students, it would be to take a step back from the fastpaced changing world of technology and social media. “Unplug often, practice kindness, be confident, and make your priority to become the best version of yourself,” Fatta said.

Osceola’s Lopez: ‘We’re here to be awesome’

Katherine Reynolds’s inspiration for teaching came from people who left a special mark in her life: her own second-grade teacher’s presentation of material, her high school English teacher’s joy of teaching and a kindergarten teacher with whom she works with at Pine Trail Elementary. “That, combined with childhood memories of school being a

place where all was good pointed me toward teaching,” Reynolds said in a statement. Reynolds became a teacher later in life, but now she has been teaching for 10 years. Though she enjoys teaching all subject matters to her fourth-grade students, she does have a favorite. Science. In addition to working with her class, Reynolds also spends time with her Green Thumbs club after school. “Pine Trail is the place to be,” Reynolds said.

When Yahaira Lopez was young, she and her cousins would always play pretend “school,” and her cousins would always choose her to play the part of the teacher in the game. “They would always tell me how smart and caring I was,” Lopez said in a statement. “With that, I always had a passion to continue learning and growing.” Lopez is a product of Volusia County schools. After graduating from Atlantic High School in 2004, she moved to Tampa to attend the University of South Florida, where she studied elementary education and received her bachelor’s degree in May 2009. She began her teaching career later that year in Plant City, where she taught third grade, until she moved back to Volusia County in 2014 to be close to her large family. Now, she teaches fourth grade at Osceola Elementary. Lopez said she is grateful for the opportunity past principal Mary Speidel gave her to work here. She said she continues to work with a great team of faculty, staff and administration. “They help to inspire me to be better each and every day for my

students, and together we work as a team to do what is best for our students. Because at Osceola we’re not here to be average,” Lopez said. “We’re here to be awesome.” Family is what inspired Lopez to become a teacher, along with several inspiring educators who influenced her life. Lopez said she loves waking up every morning to see the smiles on her students’ faces. They become her “family” during the school day, she said. “My students are my inspiration every day to continue learning and growing to be better for them and generations to come,” Lopez said. “My hope is that I instill the passion for learning and growing in all the students that become my family throughout the years.”

Samantha Fabulich attended all local schools while growing up. She went to Tomoka Elementary, Ormond Beach Middle School and graduated from Seabreeze High School. Fabulich is proud to say she is a product of Volusia County schools. She decided to go into education because of her parents, who were both teachers and then administrators in Volusia County. Fabulich now teaches fourthand fifth-grade gifted students at Pathways Elementary. This will be her 19th year of teaching. “I am challenged daily, and each day I am thankful for the inspiration which enables me to continue pursuing my passion of teaching for that ‘aha’ moment I might have created in class, or the silent, but telling ‘thank you’ from a child or colleague, or even the ‘Do you remember me?’ moment when I see former students,” Fabulich said in a statement. Every year, when her students graduate from fifth grade, she tells them about the North Star. She says it’s considered to be the star that helps to guide people when they look up and asks them to remember this: “My voice and those of your

Francesca Knutson is proud to be a teacher at Ormond Beach Elementary. Knutson was teaching fifth grade when the school celebrated its 100th birthday in 2017. In a statement, Knutson said she enjoyed creating a slideshow with her students with the past archives of the school, and seeing the lush trees and beautiful campus Ormond Beach Elementary had been. It was then she was enticed by the possibilities for student learning that could be created through increasing the school’s greenery. “Developing the culture of gardening enriches our arts murals around our campus with ‘living’ life science,” Knutson said. “Now as students, parents, staff, and teachers walk through our campus they are watching our ‘growth’.” Knutson had gardened at previous schools, and she said she knew the impact it could have, not only on her students, but on the overall school culture. The idea came to fruition when she began teaching third grade. The principal at the time, Tucker Harris, told her to “think bigger” and begin grade-level wide gardens.

They completed the first #GoGreenGoGrow grant, reached out to the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach who built the gardens, and contacted the agriculture center and was assigned a master gardener. Knutson then received monthly garden lessons for third and fourth grade, thanks to the University of Florida classroom gardening program. Under OBE’s new principal, Shannon Hay, the student gardens were moved to the outdoor lunch area. Visitors may see students watering the plants at recess, eating their harvests, or witnessing the garden club work with the plants after school. Knutson also leads the OBE LEGO Jr. club and has recently reopened the school’s science lab. “Ormond Beach Elementary continues to be a beautiful growing place to be,” Knutson said.

Tracy Lambert decided to become a teacher one week in the middle of the summer before her senior year of high school. She was working as a summer counselor at an environmental camp in western Maryland, and that week, they had special needs students at camp. It was then she realized how much she enjoyed teaching. “It was that week that I felt the calling to become a teacher, a decision that I’m very thankful that I made,” Lambert said in a statement. She didn’t always think she was going to go into the education industry. Before that fateful week, she had been thinking about pursuing a major in pharmacy after graduation. She was good at science as a student. Now, as a third-grade teacher at Tomoka Elementary, she loves helping struggling students “fill the gaps in their learning so they can excel in the classroom.” Being nominated as Teacher of the Year makes her feel humble. “There are so many deserving teachers in our schools,” Lambert said. “To be nominated by my peers is quite an honor.”

In Loving Memory

Philip Ndum, MD January 2, 1967 - December 1, 2018

The physicians and staff of Florida Cancer Specialists thank Dr. Philip Ndum for his 15 years of serving patients in the Volusia and Flagler communities. Dr. Ndum began his practice as a medical oncologist/hematologist in the Palm Coast community in 2003 and joined Florida Cancer Specialists in 2013. Despite being diagnosed with cancer early in 2016, Dr. Ndum continued to practice as his health allowed until very recently, serving as a constant example of faith, strength and courage for his patients.

To make a donation to the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation in Dr. Ndum’s memory, please visit Foundation.FLCancer.com/DrNdum.
