A Legacy Is More Than Money DAVID HOLLAND PLANSTRONGER™
In his final months of life, Morrie had a steady stream of visitors to his bedside – family, friends and many of his former students. It’s amazing how one individual, in two very different stages of his life, was able to touch, impact, and influence so many lives. More specifically though, the story highlights the DAVID HOLLAND special relationship between a teacher and CPA, CFP® one student, the author.
Many years ago, there was a bestselling book entitled, Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson, by Mitch Albom. I remember hearing about the book, but back then I was busy getting my financial planning firm off the ground, so it wasn’t at the top of my reading list. Recently, at the recommendation of one of my employees, I picked it up.
I don’t want to spoil the story, should you decide to read it. But, in a nutshell, it is about a university sociology professor, Morrie, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. One of his former students, “Mitch,” who is also the author, was very close to his teacher, but, despite promises to keep in touch after graduation, he became too busy with “life” – pursuing a career, making money, and chasing success. When Mitch finds out his former mentor is ill, he begins to visit him – on Tuesdays – to listen, learn, and eventually write about Morrie’s views on a variety of topics. Morrie’s “lessons” on everything from our culture, to money, to death, itself, are powerful and enlightening, and, may I add, still relevant today. But, I must warn you, as captivating as this book is, it’s not a feel-good journey. It’ll tug at your heart and, at some point, will probably bring a tear to your eye. So, what does this decades-old book have to do with financial planning? Everything! Each chapter could be a flashing billboard for planning ahead and preparing for the unexpected. But, the words on the pages tell so much more.
January Jan. 8: Roundtable of Volusia County Elected Officials is presented with survey stating a half-cent sales tax referendum would likely pass in the county, if the money went toward road and water improvements.
Jan. 16: Daytona Beach's new slogan, "Wide. Open. Fun," adopted at a Halifax Area Advertising Authority meeting.
Jan. 18: Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington writes editorial about how a prior commission's decision to refuse changing the city's wetland rules led to the land that is now Margaritaville being annexed into the city of Daytona Beach. "It was a victory of sorts to the antisprawl residents and commissioners who supported it at the time," he wrote. Ormond Beach will now be impacted without having any regulatory authorities or revenues to control long-term consequences, Partington wrote.
Jan. 8: Kissimmee woman Janice Marie Zengotita-Torres' body was dumped on Bennett Lane. She was killed after being mistaken for another woman during a murderfor-hire plot.
Jan. 18: All 16 city managers approve the default distribution of funds raised by a possible halfcent sales tax.

Jan. 20: Thomas Zermano, of the Lipan Apache Tribe, during the 29thannual Native American Festival at the Casements. Jan. 22: Volusia County is "soaring to new heights," County Council Chair Ed Kelley said, at the State of the County address.
Jan. 26: Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce swears in new Board of Directors. Rachael Gilbert becomes its chairwoman for 2018.
As the year draws to a close, I can’t help but recall the hundreds of meetings I’ve had with my clients over the past 21 years. When I go about my daily work as a financial planner and adviser, I hope that I, not only teach people about their finances so they can improve their circumstances, but that, by truly listening and caring, I am able to connect with them on a personal level, as well. It is this approach, and attitude, I have tried to nurture in the team of advisers who now work at Holland Financial. As you may have already heard, starting January 1st, I’ll be taking a break from this weekly column. But, before I do, I’d like to wish each one of my readers a very happy and healthy 2019. Please continue to email me your financial questions and don’t forget to watch PlanStrongerTV™, Sunday through Friday, at 7 pm on Channel 15.

SPORTS MEMORABLE MOMENTS at Seabreeze and Mainland 2018
The Buccaneers celebrate after Mainland’s Johnny Brown hit a layup to upset Atlantic.
MAINLAND TAKES TOP SPOT IN RIVALRY WITH ATLANTIC SANDCRABS SOCCER A BREATH AWAY FROM STATE TITLE Seabreeze's boys soccer team was 4 seconds away from a penalty kick shootout against American Heritage that would decide the winner
of the Class 3A state championship. However, the Patriots’ Sebastian Vidarte ripped a ball from just inside the 18-yard box. The shot grazed the finger tips of Sandcrabs goal keeper Cameron Bowling. The Sandcrabs lost 1-0 on Feb. 24 at Spec Martin Stadium. However, it was still a year to remember for
These two teams' first meeting could be argued as where it all started for Mainland coach Joe Giddens and co. The Buccaneers hosted area powerhouse Atlantic on Jan. 19. With 17 seconds remaining and the game tied at 56 in front of a packed gym, Mainland guard Taron Keith dribbled the ball up the court.
With 10 seconds remaining, Johnny Brown set a screen for Keith, who was trapped by a pair of Sharks defenders. With 5 seconds remaining, Keith desperately flung the ball to teammate Deyonte Tucker, who quickly shuffled the ball to Brown, who stood alone under the basket. The ball left Brown’s left hand, kissed the backboard and sank through the hoop as the game clock expired. Mainland won 58-56. The Buccaneers took down the Sharks in their second meeting, as well,
topping Atlantic 55-49 on Jan. 24 on the Sharks' home court. And on Dec. 14, the Buccaneers faced the Sharks for a third time, leading by as much as 14 in the fourth quarter. The Sharks stormed back and sent the game into overtime with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of regulation. The Sharks led by 3 with 3 seconds remaining in double overtime when Brown stole the inbounds pass and launched a 3-pointer to keep the Buccaneers, who won in triple overtime, alive.
Mainland's Ra'Mello Dotson celebrates with a teammate after scoring a touchdown against Seabreeze.
IS IT EVEN A RIVALRY?
File photos
Seabreeze’s Franco Perez collapses on the field after the Sandcrabs’ lastsecond loss to American Heritage in the title game.
For the longest time, MainlandSeabreeze football was a storied rivalry. That hasn't been the case for almost a decade, however. The Buccaneers pounded the Sandcrabs 43-0 on Oct. 26 at Daytona Stadium. It was the second straight year the Buccaneers held the Sandcrabs scoreless, and it was Mainland's eighth straight win over its crosstown rival.

SEABREEZE'S KORFANT QUALIFIES FOR STATES Sandcrabs swimmer Luke Korfant had never advanced to the state swim meet prior to 2018. Regardless, the senior finished the 100-yard freestyle in the Class 3A Region 2 meet on Nov. 3 with a time of 49.5 seconds to qualify. Korfant didn't make it out of the preliminary heat, but he was the first Sandcrabs swimmer in three years to advance to states. Victor Toth was the last to do so.
