Last week, we looked back on some of our favorite moments of 2018 with the Photos of the Year edition. This week, we recognize people who impact the community — often in ways most of us never hear about. The news stories in the Palm Coast Observer often feature some of the same names each week — elected officials, business leaders. We asked some of those leaders to nominate someone else who doesn’t always get recognized for what they do. For example, John Subers was one of our People to Watch in the first edition of 2018. This year, we reached out to him again, and he nominated Elaine Gonsalves, a super volunteer with Florida Hospital Flagler. Because of her efforts in making the community a better place (read all about it on Page 12), we awarded her with a Standing O. We are toying with some other ideas for how to award Standing O’s in the future, so stay tuned. If you had to nominate someone, who would it be and why? Email editor@palmcoastobserver.com.

As I was reading the stories that our writers submitted for this edition, one that stood out to me was Ray Boone’s profile on Tim Wilsey. He’s a volunteer firefighter for the city of Palm Coast, and the story begins with a dramatic moment in which Wilsey was stuck in a house that was on fire. I was imagining what I would do in that situation, when I took a second look at the photo on the page. And I realized that I recognized him. When I visit the city manager’s office occasionally, I have met him more than once as he sits at the desk just outside the administration wing of City Hall. I have asked him his name a couple of times and forgot both times. Sorry! But I won’t forget anymore, after reading this story. I hope you have a similar experience. This is what is magical about a community newspaper: You learn more about your neighbors and your neighborhood, and you therefore feel more connected to your community. It happened to me this week, and it has happened to me many times since the Palm Coast Observer began in 2010. A second group of stories in this edition introduces you to the Flagler Schools Teachers of the Year. Each one has passion for helping our children get excited about learning — and about life. Thanks to all the teachers. You deserve a standing ovation as well.

Her involvement includes pastor of Reverse Church, radio show ‘Today with Pastor J,’ a free kids summer camp, Rotary Club and more. PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

Once a year, Jearlyn Dennie dresses in worn clothing and walks around Flagler County with only one water bottle in hand. She is “homeless” for about 10 hours that one day a year. She has watched some people she knows avoid eye contact as they pass by — not recognizing her in the disguise. She does it to spread awareness and to give to a local family in need. The money she raises from friends who sponsor her to be “homeless” for each hour goes to the family she finds. It’s just one of the ways she impacts the community. “I just love people. And if people can be inspired by that, that makes me feel like I’ve accomplished my goal,” Dennie said. Dennie founded Jearlyn Ministries five years ago after delay-

“Pastor Jearlyn is not only a very giving and caring person, but a woman of her word, reliable, and truly serves others needs before her own. ... Jearlyn is always one person I can call upon who never says no, will resourcefully come to my rescue and never complains about all the other responsibilities she has waiting.” CINDY EVANS, president of the Rotary Club of Flagler County

ing God’s calling on her life for long enough, she said. “I’ll never forget praying and knowing it was time,” Dennie said. “I had run from it for so long that I knew it was the right thing.” She wears many hats, but it’s all for God’s purpose, she said. Dennie uses Jearlyn Ministries as the umbrella to different causes she started, including TNT Prayer Line, a way for her to minister to those around the globe 6:30-7:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. She can pray with up to 100 people at a time if they call in to 904-7017177. Her energy doesn’t fade, as she gets her strength from God, she said. “To be a leader, you have to have a servant’s heart,” Dennie said. “What most people don’t know about me is I’m really an introvert. What they don’t see is the Lord in me, guiding me to do that.” She also hosts a weekly radio show called “Today with Pastor J” Sundays at 8 a.m. on WNZF. “I think it’s important for people to see that we can talk about politics, we can talk about education, we can talk about what’s going on in the community — and be a Christian,” Dennie said. “And no matter what the negative spin is, put a positive spin on it.”

As the pastor of Reverse Church, which meets three times a month around the community, Dennie said she gets to reach people who don’t attend church, as it’s a church without walls. “Jesus reversed the curse of sin and death, and people are still living in bondage,” she said about the church’s name. Not having church walls has allowed her to better reach the community, she said. She serves Thanksgiving dinners to families in Bunnell every year. She holds a completely free camp called Summer Son all summer that teaches kids about God and provides breakfast and lunch. Her 2019 summer camp will be held at the African American Cultural Society. “Pastoring is who I am; it’s not a title,” Dennie said. As a mother of seven children, she takes active roles in their lives, being a Community Problem Solvers coach and School Advisory Council member. She’s also a Rotarian and Kiwanian. “I like to say that my life is a reflection of his grace and his mercy,” Dennie said. “I knew when I was like 7 yeas old that there was a calling on my life, which I ran from. ... I remember thinking, ‘Oh, when I get older, on my death bed, then I’ll choose Jesus.’ But I remember just as clear as day, I can look back over my life and all the challenges and all the heartaches and everything I’ve gone through — and the things that I’ve caused — I can see him guiding me the whole way.”

oe Wright and his wife moved from Philadelphia to Palm Coast in 1993 when he accepted a job in Orlando. But by the time he arrived in town, the man who hired him had been fired. Wright was left jobless. He took a $6-an-hour job wiring houses in Palm Coast for ITT Inc. the next day. It was a struggle for Wright and his young family. Fast forward to 2003: While working for a different, yet struggling electrical company, Wright realized he could do all the work himself. He closed out his 401k, bought a Ford F150 and started working on his own the next day. “Mother’s Day that year I was in a ditch, my wife was in a ditch, my daughter was in a ditch, and my son was a baby, so he was crawling around some dirt pile somewhere,” Wright joked. But through all the trying times, Wright remembered one of his father’s old sayings: If you’re

going to be a ditch digger, be the best ditch digger you can be. “That’s what I am,” Wright said. “I’m a ditch digger.” Wright started Quantum Electrical Contractors Inc. in 2004. The company is strong in the utility market and does a lot of service work locally. Quantum Electric survived the economic downturn of the early 2000s, and Wright said the company may have come out better because of it. Unsuccessful, or unprepared, companies were washed out, and only the strong businesses remained. “It was a really good time to rebuild, restructure and figure out what mistakes we were making,” he said. Quantum Electric was able to make just over $1 million four years ago. Now it’s making upward of about $6 million. Consistent effort for its customers is what’s moved the company forward, he said. “Our customers are our biggest sales people,” Wright said. “We don’t really go out to ask people for new work. When somebody says I can’t get this done, our cus-

tomers tell them to call us.” Wright, who also co-owns a sister electrical company called Aqua Electric LLC, has relied on his family to boost production, as well. Both his daughter and son work for Quantum Electric. “The one person who’s not here is my wife,” he said laughing. “She was offered a job but turned it down.” Nowadays, when he does enter the field, usually once or twice per week, it’s to oversee things. His ditch-digging days are over. But sometimes, when he’s in his office in a unit off Palm Coast Parkway, he thinks back to the time when he used to get his hands dirty. “Some days I like that time better,” he said. “There’s days where I crave to just dig a ditch and throw a pipe in it. There’s been a lot ups and downs, but I’ve always maintained that best ditch digger mentality.”

Flagler DOH’s Steven Bickel helps grow HIV clinic The clinic currently services about 100 patients and has a 98% high control level for the illness. about the Flagler County Department of Health’s free clinic, he was able to obtain his Florida medical license. He started working with the Flagler DOH in 2012. The clinic has expanded since that time, and a couple years ago, the HIV clinic was created. Bickel, who had prior experience in treating the illness, was made the treating physician.

RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

D

r. Steven Bickel had been a physician for more than 40 years. But when he moved from Los Angeles to Flagler County in 2011, he was in retirement. “But I never stay away from medicine for too long,” he said. Shortly after finding out

The program currently services about 100 patients in the county. Bickel said he typically sees three types: transfers from other clinics, newly diagnosed and those who have full-blown AIDS — patients whose immune systems are so beaten down that they’re at risk of dying from an infectious disease. However, Bickel said you don’t exactly cure HIV. The goal is to get to a “high level of control.” The HIV program has made significant strides since its

inception, with about 98% of its patients achieving a high level of control, according to its most recent audit. “There’s still a lot of stigma with HIV. It’s really like treating high blood pressure nowadays. It’s really not that hard,” said Bickel, who was named the Humanitarian of the Year by the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation. “It’s like if you told someone that they had metastatic cancer. You can’t cure it, but all you have to do is take a pill with minimal side effects every day for the rest of your

life and your cancer would never progress. It would totally change how we think about cancer. That’s how it is with HIV.” Bickel is a treating physician in another program that was started more recently: the Flagler DOH’s hepatitis C clinic. Treatment of hepatitis C has seen a paradigm shift over the past decade, according to Bickel. It’s gone from an incurable disease, to one that was highly difficult and expensive to treat and, finally, to one that’s much easier to cure. The clinic, which was started this year, has treated about 10 patients so far. “The impact is huge,” Bickel said. “They have a chance to be cured of it and not even need medicine after a while.” In the works for 2019 is a diabetes education program. Bickel is a consultant on that project. The goal is to train people on how to manage their diabetes. “There’s a big difference in knowing how to manage it versus going through the motions,” he said. “It’s a fairly laborintensive process to keep on top of it. A lot of people just walk through it.” Bickel hopes to see the Flagler DOH transform even more in the next few years. “We have big plans. Even though Flagler County is small, we want it to be state-of-theart in terms of its capabilities with programs,” he said. “The people I’m working with are cool people. They’re bright. They’re motivated. They’re talented. And they want to improve the community. It’s just been fun to see things grow.”

STANDING O

“Dr. Bickel has been instrumental in many initiatives, including overseeing a highquality HIV program and a chronic hepatitis C program. He is an accomplished physician, mentor, advocate, tireless volunteer and generous philanthropist. We are fortunate to be affiliated with him and are grateful for his dedication to improving public health in our region.”

Alma Rock-Yanochko channels passion for swimming through teaching Rock-Yanochko helps train staff members as new swim instructors, increasing the number of swim classes offered. RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

A

lma Rock-Yanochko grew up a “military brat.” As a result of her father’s service in the Navy, she lived in several states around the country. She fostered her love for water while living in California and Hawaii. She swam competitively in high school and also competed in water polo. When she turned 18, she got involved with the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation department. Barely out of high school, she was lifeguarding and teaching interested learners how to swim. “I always swam,” she said. “After that, it becomes a lifestyle.” Seventeen years later, RockYanochko still loves the water. She turned her intense passion for swimming into a profession. Rock-Yanochko is currently the aquatics and safety specialist for the city of Palm Coat’s Parks and Recreation. Her responsibilities include training lifeguards and swim instructors, as well as teaching Parks and Recreation’s staff CPR at the Frieda Zamba Swimming Pool, located at 339 Parkview Drive in

“Alma is a hard-working staff member who goes the extra step to help in all aspects of our department’s growth. She has helped tremendously with the growth of our safety and aquatics programs this year.” Palm Coast Parks and Recreation Director ALEX BOYER

Palm Coast Parks And Rec’s Alma Rock-Yanochko

Palm Coast. In an area bordered by water, swimming is an essential skill, she said. “At least just learn how to float,” she said. “I think it’s great that they have us training all of Parks and Rec. It’s good that our staff is trained to respond. And you get to know everyone in Parks and Rec.” Parks and Recreation used to only train lifeguards prior to 2018. But Rock-Yanochko got her certification in water safety instruction so she could start training swim instructors. The

department is able to offer more swim lessons, as a result. The department has more plans for 2019, as well. Something Rock-Yanochko is going to be a part of: a new program called Fitness on the Water. The program involves working out on a tsunami board. In addition, Master Swim is going to be run by the city this upcoming year. People ages 18 and up are eligible to sign up. In her six years in Palm Coast, there’s never been a serious accident under her watch. But she’s always on the lookout.

“Our job is to prevent accidents from happening. Our staff has done a great job with that,” she said. “But we live around water. There’s drownings. It’s very stressful. There’s a lot of things that can happen.” Swimming is something Rock-Yanochko is passionate about, and she wants to be involved with it for as long as possible. “I love aquatics,” she said. “I can’t picture myself outside of it. I just love water sports.”

after the values they hope the program can instill: Honor, Discipline, Service, Respect and Courage. Anjanette Stevens, the Flagler Warriors treasurer and a team mom, said Brandt’s service to the kids had inspired her to volunteer. “He likes that personal touch,” she said. “He goes up and talks to people, and he just cares about everybody he comes into contact with.” Brandt has six children. Stay said. About 230 children are now involved, plus about 50 volunteers. “Sports has always been a way for me to cope with problems in my life as a kid,” Brandt said. “That’s probably why I’m still involved in this stuff, because I look at other kids and, you know, they need it too.” Johnston, himself a disabled veteran, had long thought that veterans could be valuable mentors to kids, while benefitting through the experience. ons specialist; he deployed in Desert Storm. He was coaching his own kids in football when he decided he wanted to start a new program with an emphasis on mentoring. The Warriors write essays. They attend leadership classes. Brandt takes extra time with kids who are having a tough time at home. “Let’s just say I feed a lot more kids than my own,” Brandt said with a laugh. “My house is like a revolving door of kids, in and out all day.” Brandt designs the curriculum, and he schedules guest speakers. Ed Schmaler, the Warriors’ 14-and-under head coach, said Brandt has sometimes come out and helped run drills. The first year, Brandt and his wife spent about $5,000 of their own money buying helmets. “Our first year, his biggest thing was to help kids in Bunnell out,” said Bryan Scott Jackson, a deputy, veteran and member of the executive PAL board. “Kids who, say, the father has left the family and now the kids only have a mom ... having to work two or three jobs, and they might not have vehicles.” So, Brandt organized vans. “We would drive into the projects, pick these kids up, so that they could be in football,” Jackson said. “That was his vision.” When the teams are preparing for the season during the summer, Brandt is at practice from 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the season, he’s there two or three days a week, then on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for games. He’s disciplined, orderly. “But he’s not a slave driver; he’s fun to be around,” said Rachel Johnston, secretary for the Flagler Warriors’ board, and Gary Johnston’s wife. “We had a Christmas parade not too long ago, and he was up there in elf ears, dancing and singing.” There are the constant reminders of how Brandt’s work with kids helps. Not long ago, he bumped into a man in his 30s who recalled when Brandt had coached him at youth baseball. “It’s times like that that really put everything into perspective,” Brandt said. “I have a lot of self satisfaction seeing some smiling faces and some excited kids. ... And, you know, it breaks my heart when they lose and they’re sad, and I really get excited about when they win and they’re happy. ... Watching them turn into what they turn into — for the most part, it’s something good. Can’t get to them all, but at the end of the day — yeah. I just enjoy watching these kids grow up.”

“[Steve Brandt] is 120 miles an hour; doesn’t stop. I’m always leaning on him to tell him slow down, delegate. He has a plan that’s in his mind, and he’s going to see it through, and if he has to, he’d do it by himself.” —BRYAN SCOTT JACKSON

STA NDI NG O staff assistant for the city of Palm Coast. “You don’t do this to chase money. You do it because it’s a passion that you have. It’s to help your fellow man and your community.” Wilsey’s most memorable moment as a volunteer occurred a decade ago. He wasn’t on-shift. He’d just finished a breakfast meeting at a Denny’s with other volunteers when a distressed woman showed up. Her infant, who was hooked up to a ventilator in a stroller, was not breathing. Wilsey quickly diagnosed the problem: The woman was holding the baby’s stroller at an angle. The baby’s saliva had backwashed, and he couldn’t breath as a result. Wilsey pulled the stroller off the curb, grabbed a suction ball and siphoned out the fluid. After a few heart-wrenching moments, the baby gasped and squeezed Wilsey’s finger. The baby was breathing. “I was just in the right place at the right time,” Wilsey said. Wilsey doesn’t see action too often anymore. As a captain, he’s responsible for a lot more administrative work. In addition, the number of page-outs to volunteers has dropped because the professional firefighters’ response times have improved. But when his pager does buzz, when the moment to step up does arrive, there’s still a burst of excitement. “I think when the excitement is no longer there, it’s time to throw in your hat,” Wilsey said. “When that pager goes off, you’re excited to get to the station. You want to help. That’s what you want to do. That’s why you’re here.”

T

im Wilsey still remembers the first fire he responded to as a certified volunteer firefighter. It was a single-room fire at a house in Palm Coast’s W-section. Fresh out of fire school, he could finally enter the “hot zone.” He was excited — and then, when Wilsey entered the small bedroom, the ceiling collapsed and shut the door on him. He checked the windows — they were barred. Somehow, he had to figure out a way to escape the burning room. Wilsey didn’t panic. He regained his focus and removed the debris that was blocking the door. He was only in the room for a couple of minutes. But it felt like an eternity. “You have to keep your cool and stay level-headed,” Wilsey said. “Just that quick you can become trapped as a firefighter. Situational awareness always has to be on the top of your mind.” That incident was nearly 13 years ago. Wilsey, who moved to Palm Coast from New Orleans in 2002,

“Tim is always there when we need him. He’s reliable, dependable. He offers guidance when we need it. He has a servant’s heart. He truly cares about the community he lives in.”

has been involved with the Palm Coast Volunteer Firefighters for 14 years. He started out as an uncertified firefighter and worked his way up the ladder. He’s been a captain for eight years. Palm Coast has a professional, paid firefighting staff. But the volunteers, about 60 individuals, are the support system. They’re on-call 24 hours, seven days a week. They’re usually called in for major events such as structure fires and wildfires. And they don’t get paid. They all have day jobs. “It was my way of giving back,” said Wilsey, who works as a senior

Sara Hale uses technology to help Sea Turtle hospital Hale, the co-fouder of Coastal Cloud, provides real-world experience for students. PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

Sara Hale, the co-founder of Coastal Cloud, an information technology consulting company that’s based in Palm Coast, is helping Flagler Schools students get real-world experience. She’s also fostering growth at the Sea Turtle Hospital at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience. “I’ve always had a passion for marine life, and also boating and being on the water,” Hale said. “It’s what brought us to Palm Coast to begin with.” Hale joined the Whitney Lab Board of Directors about four years ago, and, not long after that, the Sea Turtle Hospital opened at 9505 N. Oceanshore Blvd., St. Augustine. Through her management partner position at Coastal Cloud, Hale has done pro bono work to promote the hospital and help the staff manage and grow its volunteers. “I’m so impressed with the talent that’s here, and to get to see them in action is amazing,” Hale said. Jessica Long, the senior director of advancement at the Whitney Lab, credits Sara Hale and her husband (the other co-founder of Coastal Cloud) with the board’s impressive strategy and the hospital’s growth. With promotion and social

media marketing done by Coastal Cloud, about 600 guests were present for the opening of the sea turtle hospital, when only about 250 were initially expected, Long said. “Not everyone on our board is a business person,” Long said, noting that Hale owns a business. “They come to it with a lot of different backgrounds. [Hale] has really helped us. I’ve noticed in a lot of the meetings, she keeps us very organized and on-task, even though she’s not the chair. She sets a very good example for her peers.” Hale’s dedication to education shines through in both her work at the lab and with Flagler Schools. Coastal Cloud collaborated with the district’s Classrooms to Careers (Flagships) program, which features different focuses of study — from teaching to law and justice to culinary arts to a fire academy — at Flagler County Public Schools, to create an online Classrooms to Careers portal, linking the divide between students and the real-world businesses and organizations around them. “The goal is to get our high school juniors and seniors — and actually more of the students — to get work based experiences, whether it’s through job shadowing, an internship, a company tour, a classroom lecture,” Hale said. “But it’s really getting reallife work experience brought to the students to ultimately help them make better choices or figure out what career they want to do.” As a mother of three children who attend Flagler Palm Coast High School, Hale sees the value in providing additional opportunities to students to jumpstart

their careers. “I think there are amazing kids in this community that need to be shown what options are available for them,” she said. This spring, Coastal Cloud is hoping to utilize its interns to promote the flagships to local businesses, in the hopes they’ll offer their own services and opportunities to Flagler County students. Coastal Cloud itself also provides internships to teach youth about salesforce.com and other IT fundamentals in a professional setting. “Last year, we were going to hire three to four interns to sort of help us roll this out, but I was so amazed by all the students we interviewed that we hired all 12,” Hale said. The business, which was founded over five years ago, is currently looking for new interns for the spring of 2019. With 150 consultants, Coastal Cloud is ready to keep inspiring positive change in the community. Hale said it was built with the idea that employees need to be able to rightly balance work and personal life. The business utilizes video technology for meetings and provides flexible schedules for employees. “What was important to me when founding it was to create the company that I would have wanted to work for,” Hale said. “I had been in a large IT-consulting company and traveled for seven years straight, and that wasn’t very conducive to balancing what other priorities people might have in their lives.” The business is 44% women, which is above industry standards and is something Hale takes pride in.

“I am not sure how Sara manages it all, but even more perplexing is how she seems to have the time of her life while doing it. I have watched her invest her time, intellectual capital and energy into the interns she has hired and the student portal she has built to give all students in our community work-based experience.”

P

alm Coast resident Elaine has been volunteering with Florida Hospital Flagler’s marketing department, as well as the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation for the last decade. FHF Foundation Director John Subers has known her for 10 years and is inspired by her hard work.

“I’m kind of like John’s foot soldier,” Gonsalves said. “I go to the different events, different restaurants and put up donating buckets.” Her volunteering began soon after she was declared cancerfree. After completing a rigorous 90-day chemotherapy treatment to rid her of stage 4 ovarian cancer, Gonsalves knew she wanted to use her experience to help others. “My main thing in life is to pass it on,” she said. “I meet a lot of people. ... If you can explain or give your testimony to some-

one, then they’ll know they’re not alone.” Gonsalves has earned the “5,000 volunteer hours” pin from the FHF Auxiliary volunteers, which is cumulative for her years of volunteering, she said. She has lived in Palm Coast since 1999 and keeps herself busy in the community; that’s where she finds her joy. In addition to her extensive work with FHFF, she started volunteering with the Flagler Auditorium in 2012, and, mostrecently, got a job at Chick-fil-A

as a greeter in the dining room. “It’s been a pleasure,” she said about her time so far at the Palm Coast Chick-fil-A. “I’ve been with them for about six months. It’s a new venture. The owners and the staff are excellent people to work for. They’re all there just to help the community.” Up until recently, she worked there about 3-4 times a week; but she’s had to take a step back due to a knee problem. It’s tiring work, she said, but the genuine people she’s met push her through. “They’re just beautiful people and you don’t run across a lot of them,” Gonsalves said. “Everybody there, they just want to help — help the community, do whatever they can. I’ve been in different businesses, and it’s not the same. When you go there, it’s faith-based, like the hospital. They’re always like, ‘What can I do? What can I do?’” When she found out that Subers nominated her for a “Standing O,” she said, “I appreciate it, I value it; but there are so many others. I do this out of love.” The fact that Gonsalves was quick to note the involvement of others didn’t surprise Subers. “She inspires me each time she walks into our office ready to accomplish the next task assigned,” he said. “Her work is totally about ‘others,’ and any attention given to her is quickly deflected to others or how God has blessed her and given her the ability and strength to support others.” (Florida Hospital’s parent company, Adventist Health System, changed its name to AdventHealth on Jan. 2.)

het Henry, Palm Coast’s lead C landscaper, is perhaps best known in the city of Palm Coast

for the skill he wasn’t originally hired for: Working a barbecue grill. Henry has grilled for some of the city’s and Flagler County’s biggest events: Fourth of July Celebrations, Rock ’n’ Ribs, Citizens’ Academy graduations. And he wishes he could grill even more. “I think it would pull us more close together,” he said “It’s something about when you eat, when you sit down to the table and you eat.” Terry Jarvis, office manager for the city’s utility department, says she’s known him about 30 years. “He’s just the best person — will do anything for you — and he’s an excellent cook,” she said. “He does barbecued chicken; he does a spicy, kind of a Louisiana-type sausage, where he adds peppers and his own sauce. ... He does a killer roast. He does a lot of spices. It’s very, very good.” And landscaping and grilling aren’t all Henry’s done with Palm Coast.

“There’s not too many things I haven’t done with the city,” he said. “I went from streets to parks all the way down to [certified operator] of a swimming pool, confined spaces, irrigation — you name it, I’ve been there. I’ve been a part of all of it.” *** Henry was born in Flagler County in 1962. His dad was one of the county’s first black law enforcement officers, a foot patrol officer for Bunnell. When Henry’s not working — often he’s doing something for the city seven days a week — he fishes, rides a Harley and goes to church on Sunday, often twice: Once at Parkview Baptist, once at Epic Church. “I think it keeps you balanced,” he said. “At least, it keeps me balanced. Grounded.” Before coming to work for the city of Palm Coast, in 2004, he worked with horses on a ranch, earning the nickname “Cowboy” — and spent some time driving a truck and working for the city of DeLand. He has four kids, two of them grown. *** Landscaping for a living in Florida comes with certain risks. The other day, Henry came up on six black snakes. Snakes like

that have struck at his extrahigh, snake-resistant boots a number of times. And then there are the hurricanes, clearing the roads of downed trees and limbs. When city staff are working those 24-hour days for emergencies, he’s the one who cooks for them. “During 24-hour time when we were working, the first two hours, we have to man the stations, but we’re not allowed to go out on the road,” Jarvis said. “And in the meantime, he’s doing all the cooking; he’s getting everybody fed, just making sure everybody has a meal.” There’s also a lighter side of the job. “I love Arbor Day, when we

They humble me every day.” Sometimes, he hears them talking about what they’re doing, like one man he overheard a while back. “He said, ‘We don’t just do ditches; we’re landscapers.’ And they’re proud.” *** Henry started learning grilling from his father as a kid. Then, in his truck-driving days, he delivered for a barbecue place outside Gainesville. He asked questions and started picking up tips. He first started cooking for the city at Fourth of July ceremonies, then for Citizens’ Academy events. The city helped him design a grill, custom welded from an old underground tank. “This grill’s perfect,” he said. “An amateur can get on that grill, and it will be seasoned from the smoke that I’ve got.” For the last citizens’ academy class, he cooked boneless chicken breast, sausage, chicken wings and slabs of ribs. When he retires, Henry plans to have a food truck. “And Palm Coast would have some real good smoked meat,” he said.

FPC’s Dennis Shorter: Family fuels football dreams His next stop? College football. RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

W

hen former Mainland defensive coordinator Travis Roland accepted the head coaching position at Flagler Palm Coast High School in December 2016, he had to (temporarily) leave behind a young, up-and-coming cornerback at Mainland. Dennis Shorter started for the Buccaneers as a sophomore but made a name for himself well before that. As a freshman, he scored 10 touchdowns in three junior varsity games, saw playing time in multiple varsity games, and in Round 2 of the 2015 FHSAA Playoffs against Heritage, he forced and recovered a fumble in what was a 21-10 victory for the Buccaneers. “He’s always been a gritty kid,” said Roland, who first met Shorter when Shorter played for the Daytona Buccaneers’ Pop Warner

“I’ve seen Dennis do special things his whole entire football career. The reason why he can do it in crunch time is because he goes hard all the time. Because he plays hard all the time, he never has to worry about forcing it to happen. He can do it when he wants to.” FPC head coach TRAVIS ROLAND

team. “I’ve seen him do special things his whole entire football career.” When Roland first accepted the job at FPC, Shorter used to joke with his former coach that he was coming, too. But several months passed and what started out as playful banter turned into an idea. Shorter, who attended the Valdosta Hitting Camp with the Bulldogs that summer, decided to transfer to FPC. He was matched up against the Bulldogs’ top receiver, Anfernee

Brown, in his first practice. He didn’t allow a catch the whole day. “As soon as I got here, I fell in love,” Shorter said. “The whole team treated me like family.” After FPC won seven games the two previous seasons combined, Shorter was part of the Bulldogs’ first undefeated regular season in school history in 2017, blocking a field goal to preserve a double overtime win over Mandarin in the final game of the regular season. The Bulldogs were arguably a

better team in 2018, but finished with a 7-4 record and an early exit from the playoffs. Regardless, Shorter still displayed his knack for making big plays at the right time. After blocking an extra point in the first quarter against Sandalwood on Sept. 28, he blocked a field goal in double overtime to keep the Bulldogs, who scored on the next drive, alive. His last game was a 34-7 loss to No. 2 seed Winter Park in the first round of the playoffs — his four years of high school football gone in the blink of an eye. The two years of success and clutch plays affirmed Shorter’s decision to follow his old coach to a team that had little experience with either at the time. His main concern when he first arrived: Would he be noticed by college teams? He always dreamed of playing college football. But prior to transferring to FPC, no schools were interested in his skills or potential. But that’s since changed. Shorter currently has 10 offers — a mix of Division I and Division I AA programs. He recently went on a visit to The Citadel and hosted an in-home visit with the team’s coaches. He doesn’t know where he wants to go yet. The deciding factor will be where he can get the best education. His family, however, is his driving force behind all his decisions. The well-being of his mother and two sisters is his fuel for getting a degree and going beyond that. “I want my family to have the world,” Shorter said. “So I’m not stopping until they get it.”

Matanzas’ Brianna Whitfield: World traveler and expert volleyball player The daughter of military parents, Matanzas volleyball player Brianna Whitfield has a unique perspective on life outside of the U.S.

RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

hen you ask Brianna Whitfield where she’s from, she can’t come up with an answer. She doesn’t consider herself from one place. The daughter of parents in the U.S. Air Force, Whitfield has lived in several places. She was born in Panama City, Florida, but from the age of 6 to 10 she lived near the Aviano Air Base in northern Italy. She made friends there, she learned the language, and she grew accustomed to the culture. She moved back to Panama City when she reached middle school and moved to Palm Coast before the start of her freshman year at Matanzas High School, but her out-of-country experiences have given Whitfield a whole new per-

“Bri is extremely intense — but in a good way. She wants success, and she’s going to push her teammates to reach that. She’s the poster child of what we want for our school.” Matanzas volleyball player Brianna Whitfield.

spective on life. “There’s so many people who don’t understand that there’s another way to live,” said Whitfield, now 16 and a sophomore at Matanzas. “There’s so much ignorance in the world, and I don’t want that for myself.” But one part of herself has stayed the same throughout her life. It’s been maintained through thousands of miles of travel: her passion to succeed. Whitfield first touched a volleyball when she was in sixth grade. It was as if it were a foreign object. It immediately piqued her interest. She joined Volley for Christ, a local church league in Panama City. She tried out for her middle school team in seventh grade. After that, she started playing club. Her superb leaping ability has always been her standout skill. When she first started playing, she struggled with hand-eye coordination, she was skinny and she lacked power on her shots. Since reaching the high school level, her talent has blossomed. Whitfield played on Matanzas’ varsity team as a freshman in 2017 and was dominant this past season for the Pirates. With her unique athletic ability, she was

able to help lead the Pirates to an 11-win season, including consecutive victories over crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast. It was in the Pirates’ last game against the Bulldogs, a five-set win on Oct. 11, where fans and teammates got to see her more fiery side. It was an emotional game. The Pirates sent the Bulldogs packing on FPC’s Senior Night. “I see the best in people, so when they don’t play to their potential, it fires me up,” Whitfield said. “I know what I can play up to, and I know what my teammates can play up to.” She also plays for DME Academy’s club team. When the high school season is over, Whitfield practices three times per week and works out twice per week with the club team. She works out on her own on Sundays. Her goal is to one day play volleyball for a Division I team; some programs have already showed interest in her. She knows she’s going to play in college. She just doesn’t know where yet. Beyond that, she wants to resume traveling the world again, and volleyball might be the tool to help her accomplish that. “To live and be outside of my comfort zone is crazy,” she said. “I miss it.”

‘Teaching is a passion’ for Teachers of the Year

SUPERINTENDENT JAMES TAGER

As superintendent of a school system, all eyes are on you to ensure a community’s children get a first-rate education they deserve, graduate, and go on to productive lives. If I thought for a minute our student’s successes are on my shoulders, I would not last in this job for long.

Our district is only as strong as our educators and other significant adults who play such a vital role in preparing Flagler County’s children for life beyond our schools. That is why I look forward to this time each year. We get a chance to celebrate our Teachers and Support Employees of the Year. I invite you to read up on all our Teacher of the Year candidates in this issue of the Palm Coast Observer. They were all chosen by their peers and administrators to represent their school. You’ll find a good cross-section of grades, teaching styles and experience on this list. There is one common denominator among them all

though: teaching is a passion for them. It is not a job where they punch out at 3:00. They are educators who consistently look for ways to reach their students in a variety of ways, and it’s not always in the classroom. You’ll find teachers who also coach when the school day ends. You’ll find teachers who stay and tutor after that final bell rings. You’ll also find teachers who look for ways to continue their professional career through additional classes as they seek to attain higher education degrees or certificates. While they enjoy what they do, I’m willing to bet these teachers are content

with where they are right now. They do not see being named a “Teacher of the Year” as the apex of their career, only the latest chapter. I’m certain there will be tears and hugs when we name our District Teacher of the Year. But if you want to see pure joy, watch our educators as a former student walks across the stage at graduation. That is why they do what they do, and why they care so much about being the best educator and best person they can be. I look forward to celebrating all these teachers, as well as our Support Employees of the Year at our annual gala, Thursday, Jan. 17, at Flagler Auditorium. It is a wonderful ceremony and

one which I hope more members of the entire community attend. Even if you do not have a child in our school system, these teachers and employees do so much to make Flagler County such a wonderful place to live, work and play. Enthusiastically yours,

MHS Teacher of the Year has passion for Hispanic culture

FPC’s Teacher of the Year doubles as XC, track coach

Lemus has taught at Matanzas for 14 years and at FPCHS 19 years before that.

Halliday has 25 years in education, 15 of which are at Flagler Palm Coast High School.

PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

Jan Lemus, the Matanzas High School Teacher of the Year, gets to work with students of all grade levels while teaching Spanish II, intensive reading and English for speakers of other languages. She’s been a member of the Pirate crew for 14 years, with 19 years at Flagler Palm Coast High School before that. Lemus said she likes to use technology to enhance the students’ language and cultural experiences in the classroom. “I like students to be able to see first-hand the exciting places where the world languages are spoken,” she said. “I want my students to be able to feel as though they have traveled the world in the classroom.” She added that she frequently shares anecdotal experiences of her own family when they arrived in the United States. “For my English language learners, I teach them English so that they will become successful citizens in this great country,” she said.

In addition to teaching, Lemus enjoys line dancing, Latin music and dancing the salsa, merengue and bachata. “Teaching for me is not just academics, but students know that I am always available when they have a problem,” she said. “I think I was chosen as Teacher of the Year because teaching is not a job for me, but a lifelong passion. As the graduation coach/teacher, the head cross country coach and the head track and field coach, Dave Halliday shows Bulldog pride in and out of the classroom. He’s been at Flagler Palm Coast High School for 15 years, with 25 years total in education. “My teaching style is one of facilitation and delegation so that students are able to take ownership of their learning and drive their education,” Halliday said. “My ability to be real and genuine with students allows me to earn their trust and motivate them to higher successes.” He was also the youngest high school coach to ever be inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Halliday earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and master’s degree from Florida State University. He credits his “diehard advocacy for everything FPC” and dedication to students for the award. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering support of my family, especially my wife Dr. Kim Halliday,” he said. As a seventh-grade civics teacher, the Indian Trails Middle School Teacher of the Year, Katie Hoover, believes it’s her job to build the future generation of American citizens through her coursework. She is also the head cross country coach with the Police Athletic League’s partnership with ITMS. “As a teacher and a coach, I live by the principle of leading from the front,” Hoover said. “To me, this adage means to be a role model in all that I do. At Indian Trails, this means doing whatever it takes to help all students achieve at their highest level. I guide students to become purposeful and motivated learners, setting and working toward meaningful goals.” Hoover grew up attending YMCA Camp Fitch, so she’s been working with kids since she was a kid herself. The Mustang runners have taken great strides in the last two seasons, she said, as the boys have won the Flagler County championships, with the girls close behind. “As the founder and head coach

As a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher, her lessons are a mix of direction instruction, discussion and student-centered activities, she said. “When planning a lesson, I am mindful of the students’ individual needs and incorporate instructional strategies to foster critical thinking skills,” Malloy said. “The classroom environment is relaxed, and the learning goals are clear.” Beyond the classroom, she spends her weekend mornings walking the beach and picking up trash. “The beach is my happy place,” she said. “My hope is that this simple action will inspire others to practice environmental stewardship.” Malloy credits her ability to develop relationships with her students for one of the reasons for the award. “I truly enjoy teaching and get-

With 13 years as an educator, Evensen has been a Roadrunner for her whole career. “I have always tried to think outside the box and plan in ways to inspire and excite my students and the teachers I work with,” she said. “I also use student contracts and data analysis with teachers so that goal setting is a priority for each students to see their personal progress and hard work and each teacher to know what the next goal is for their own classroom.” Before she became a teacher, Evensen spent 10 weeks backpacking with her husband around nine countries in Europe, including Spain, England, Germany, France, Austria and Ireland. The experience was a life lesson for her. “I learned just how much we tend to take for granted in our ways of doing things,” she said. “I also learned how important a sense of home is, and being in Germany and walking in places that persecution and discrimination was so prevalent inspired great reflection as to how we treat those around us and the true value of all lives.” She said she hopes her colleagues can see her passion to meet her students’ needed every day.

Joanna Hughes, the Wadsworth Elementary School Teacher of the Year, has been a kindergarten teacher for her whole education career of 14 years. “Often teachers teach several grades in their careers,” she said. “I have been lucky enough to spend the last 14 years teaching 5 year olds. I loved kindergarten and can’t imagine doing anything else.” She said her teaching style is “a combination of structure, routines, love and lots of learning fun.” “I spend a lot of time building positive relationships with my students and parents,” Hughes said. “I want my students to look forward to coming to school to learn every day. I want the parents in my classroom to know we are team and to feel comfortable knowing what we are doing each day in the classroom.” Beyond teaching, her dream is to one day appear on reality TV show, “Big Brother.” Visit http://wespanthers.com.

First-grade teacher Janine Kerry is Belle Terre Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year. She began her teaching career in Flagler County Schools in 1996 and was at Indian Trails Middle School through 2005, as an ESE Inclusion Support Facilitation Teacher in first through third grades. She’s been a Belle Terre Bobcat for 14 years, as well as the chairperson for the BTES Sunshine Committee and a Positive Behavior Interventions Support team member. “Teaching is an adventure and forever changing,” Kerry said. “Meeting them at ‘Day 1’ at our Bobcat Meet the Teacher event is a critical point to start to grow with my kids. … We celebrate success and the ‘little learning steps’ with cheers and support in our classroom family. A little-known fact is that Kerry was born in Poland and adopted with her brother from a Polish orphanage when she was 18 months old. They were brought to

Elizabeth Cabral, the Old Kings Elementary Teacher of the Year, has been an educator for 18 years, including 12 at OKES. As a kindergarten teacher, she believes that all her students are “stars,” she said, as each one has his or her own talent and learning styles that make them special. “I teach my students to always try their best,” Cabral said. “If they can do that then they will be successful in some form. Every child’s success level is different, and I celebrate with them each time they realize that they have learned something new. We not only learn our ABC’s and 123’s in class, but also how to be good, caring friends to each other.” Outside of school, she likes to visit zoos and aquariums. “Of course, I want them to succeed academically, but most of all I want my students to intrinsically realize their personal successes and celebrate them,” she said. “I want my students to know that I care.”

Water Problems? I have a reverse osmosis water system under my sink. My water still tastes great, so how will I know when it is time to change my filters?

Your filters will probably last several years. The manufactures will try to tell you to change them annually, but they are in the business to sell. Watch for two things that will indicate it’s time for a filter change. First, there will be a noticeable odor or bad taste in the water. Second, you will have a drastic change in water flow. If one or both of these symptoms occur, you know it’s time to change your filters.

Thank you for your support. You allow us and inspire us to do what we do — to deliver the local news you want and trust and the customers to help your businesses grow.

Though Travis Thomas’ role as a student services manager at Flagler Technical Institute isn’t teaching in a traditional sense, it allows him to go into the community and educate people about the resources through FTI. “I look at every student as an individual, with their own unique needs and goals,” Thomas said. “I developed a motto several years ago of helping ‘Every Student, Every Day, Every Time’ and keeping their ultimate goals at the forefront of every conversation. Adult students often have more going on in their lives that may cause disruptions and/or discouragements in their education, and the key is to keep them focused on what success will look like for them.” In addition to working at FTI, Thomas also loves to sing. He owns an entertainment business where karaoke is a main element. “For me, it is one of the best stress relievers in the world, and a way to help people feel good in a different, unique way,” he said.
