Together we go further When the first golf course was built in Mauritius in 1844, it also happened to be the very first in the Southern Hemisphere; and reportedly, the 4th golf course anywhere. Fast forward almost 175 years later, and we will have our 11th 18-hole championship golf course! We, at Mauritius Golf Tours, have always believed that our island is more than just perfect beaches, or matchless golf resorts. Mauritius can certainly pride itself on having developed into an unrivalled golf destination. But it also offers so much more, something quite unique in fact; something where history, culture, hospitality, service, fantastic weather, and amazing scenery all combine into something that is greater than the sum of its parts. We are aware that there are former great golfers and golf course designers who have made the island their second home, while others have been coming on holiday here for more than 20 years. What is it that attracts these families here year after year? Our vision in launching Mauritius, the Emerging Golf Destination was to bring all the players in the industry together on one platform to promote our beautiful island to golfers worldwide. We are fully aware that golfers have literally hundreds of destinations to choose from, every time they book a holiday. At the same time, the discerning golfer is looking for a location where he can concentrate on playing, and have everything else taken care of. We can state with utmost confidence: Look no further! Not only will you find everything you might want in terms of actual golfing, but you are on an island with multiple hidden treasures beyond the golf course. To all our partners in the golf sector who have made this first issue successful, we want to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for your support. Together, we will put Mauritius on the Golf map!

Mission “The active promotion of Mauritius as a year-round Golf Destination increasing the number of international golfer arrivals.”

Vision “To be globally recognized as one of the finest golf destinations on the planet and a reference point for others.”

Message from the President of the MGTA Dear Golfer, I am deeply honoured to have been invited to pen this note to the inaugural issue as President of the Mauritius Golf Tourism Association (MGTA). With its rich history and mix of various cultural traditions, Mauritius is indeed a privileged country to visit. With nine golf courses of internatio nal standard, linked mostly to major luxury local and international hotel chains around the island, the Mauritian golf business industry is booming; and, with two more projects underway. More than a mere sport or tourist attraction, golf in Mauritius has been swinging on a steady growth rate of 6% annually. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and the turquoise sea, our island possesses all the assets to position itself as the exotic golf destination of the Indian Ocean. Our Golf Association (MGTA) is run by golf directors and management teams of the different golf courses of the island; people who are passionate about their work and devoted to the game itself. Our main objective is to promote golf, and provide information to golfers around the world relating to the different course infrastructure, facilities, and events. Whether you are a Pro or an amateur in search of quality time far from the maddening crowds of Europe, Africa, or Asia, Mauritius is the place for your next golf holiday! We look forward to welcoming you soon. Yours in golf,

Alain Lenoir

Minister of Tourism /

Interview

A Determined

Minister of Tourism

We recently had the privilege of interviewing our Honourable Minister of Tourism, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, who took a moment out of his busy schedule to share with us his vision for the tourism sector on the island. He is more than determined to explore every avenue, to upgrade, and to promote tourism in Mauritius. We know that you have recently been appointed to the post of Minister of Tourism. This ministry is not new to you. In what state of mind are you taking the challenge of this new duty? I am very excited about taking on this role, as I’m very optimistic about the tourism industry in Mauritius. Just like the growth of the sugar cane in the fields, I believe tourism will grow just like that and even more. We have such a rich island with magnificent landscapes and views, past and modern history, and diverse cultures and religions. Mauritius is a world in and of itself.

Mauritius is branding itself as a golf destination. How do we compete with the other traditional destinations, and bring more global awareness about golf in Mauritius? Mauritius has so much potential as a golf destination. We have started being visible on the map by hosting the first ever Tri-sanctioned Tournament, the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open. This international tournament is held every year on different championship level golf courses across the island. This year, we will hit a milestone by having the tournament broadcast on various TV sports channels worldwide. Furthermore, new golf courses are being designed and will be ready by the end of this year. Today, we count eleven 18-hole courses ready to welcome all passionate golfers with any handicap. The MTPA (Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority) is currently working on a two-year action plan, together with the MGTA (Mauritius Golf Tourism Association), to which the government will also be contributing. The aim is worldwide visibility, and to establish Mauritius as a Golf Destination by using all the attributes our island and golf courses can offer.

We had an increased in the number of tourists during recent years. Are there specific strategies or plans to grow specifically the number of golfers visiting our Island? The aim is to become unbeatable. We presently have the most golf courses in the whole of the Indian Ocean, which is very strategic if we want to be established as the premier golfing centre in this region. As for plans, the MTPA and MGTA have been working on a huge project to promote golf throughout the whole year, and especially during the low season. A user-friendly website will be launched soon, giving the possibility to anyone to book at any time for a Golf Pass and from wherever they might be located. We are also opening and broadening our service offering to new key destinations such as Germany, India, China, Vietnam, and so many others.

There is always room for improvement... Have you identified a specific segment that needs upgrading to enhance the potential of the tourism sector? My personal ambition is for the tourist to get to know the whole island. We want to give the opportunity for tourists to explore, discover, and make the most of what Mauritius has to offer. Therefore, I believe as much as it is great to open new hotels, it is also very important to open the whole island to the outside world. I want to work closely with our inbound Tour Operators and encourage them not to sell only the hotels but the whole country as a package to the outbound operators. This new marketing approach will benefit both tourists and Mauritians in multiple ways.

How do you plan to attract investors into Mauritius tourism sector? We remain very open to allow investors with a vision for our tourism industry, to come invest in Mauritius. For some years now, we have been actively looking at opportunities to enlarge this field. We want the island to become a tourist friendly destination.

Interview /Sanjiv Bhasin

Sanjiv Bhasin CEO of AfrAsia Bank The CEO of AfrAsia Bank joins the dots between his dynamic bank, its services, and their sponsorship of the flagship golf event of Mauritius.

14

The government of Mauritius has invested quite heavily to develop our island as the hub for business, including shipping, travel, trade, and banking, between Africa and Asia. As the CEO of a bank called AfrAsia, this would seem to tie right in with your bank’s own ambitions… What is your perspective on this strategy, and is this the right vision for positioning Mauritius for its future? Over the last few years it is becoming clear that Asia which houses the three large economies of China, Japan and India is now the generator of investment capital which seeks deployment opportunities to provide a superior return and risk diversification. Africa which constitutes 54 countries is certainly exposing its demographic dividend and attracting the capital flows at a much faster pace than before. These investment flows require a facilitation center for control, convenience and protection. That’s where Mauritius comes in. An established offshore financial center enveloped by a track record of peaceful and stable democracy, well embedded legal system, skilled labor force, low tax rate, an excellent banking system which is well regulated and all other facilities which capital requires. Mauritius’s position is further enhanced by virtue of its 17 DTAAs and 19 Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (IPPAs) with multiple African countries. We selected to service this corridor of investment and trade flows and had our name AfrAsia display our focus and strategy. We believe that we have selected the right and growing corridor and this is likely to witness encouraging growth in the near future and we must equip ourselves and remain relevant to the client base who will be operating in this corridor. Our location in Mauritius is also beneficial as we are certain that this jurisdiction which has an ever evolving Public-Private cooperation in all fields will remain and possibly improve its business friendliness.

In this overall strategy, the objective of AfrAsia Bank is to ‘build bridges between Africa, Asia, and the World’… How, more specifically, do you go about achieving the vision of AfrAsia Bank, and how does your bank contribute to the governments vision? The reputation of Mauritius as an International Financial Sector of substance rests on the quality on a sound financial structure. As a home-grown bank, we have the key responsibilities to protect the interests of the jurisdiction by maintaining the stability of the financial system and strengthening the country’s appeal as a reliable financial centre and as a thriving hub. Our business focus in terms of product offerings is directed towards Treasury & Markets, Corporate & Investment Banking, Global Business Banking and Private Banking & Wealth Management. We also have a wholly-owned subsidiary which conducts Asset Management business, designing products which meet the investor’s requirements in this challenging economic environment. This brings me to the key focus in our business. Banking is a competitive landscape and Mauritius where we are headquartered and South Africa, where we have 2 representative offices, is no different. Our focus, therefore, is to carve a unique space for ourselves. We are attempting to do this by distinguishing ourselves through a serious commitment to Customer Experience and an approach to be seen as finding solutions for our clients and not be product salesperson. We

are focusing on constantly improving our technology platforms and procedures such that they enable us to offer a customer experience which our clients remember. This is necessary as our customer base spans across more than 120 countries and therefore our competition for business is global. We have also identified our growth by associating ourselves with clients who generate investments and trade flows within Africa, between Africa and the rest of the world and Mauritius is the gateway. Another major focus of AfrAsia Bank is the development of skilled human capital to shape the improvements to the financial services industry, where knowledge, skill, competencies and capabilities have become key drivers for competitiveness and growth. The country’s vision is to continue to be an IFC of substance and the compliance role within the financial sector has taken on increasing significance as the scope of regulatory focus continues to expand. Banks are expected to play an expanded role of compliance and active ownership of the risk and control framework. This means expanding beyond offering advice on statutory rules, regulations, and laws.

The AfrAsia Mauritius Open was the first ever tri- sanctioned tournament, endorsed by the Sunshine, Euopean, and Asian Tours. There are those that say it could become one of the top and most prestigious events on the Tour. Considering the name of your bank… how did being the main sponsor of such an event fit into the bank’s overall strategy? At the outset, the tournament’s objective is to place Mauritius at the forefront and since its launch in 2015, we have witnessed an excellent collaboration between Government, Private and Public sectors, making this tournament truly unique, all working together towards one common vision. We believe the event has established and will continue to establish the “Mauritius Brand” on a global platform and the two key businesses which will benefit more than others are Tourism & Financial Services industries. At AfrAsia, we have embarked on a journey to position the Bank as an institution which promises to be committed to service excellence and to become an employer of choice. With these strategic goals, having the Brand established and recognized is a significant necessity. The tournament has been a catalyst when deploying our brand globally and remains a perfect fit for us.

In a relatively short time, AfrAsia seems to have become the preferred bank for investors, including many Europeans… What are you doing differently, or what differentiates your offer from your competitors? The fact that we have a focused business model helped us to carve an exceptional positioning in the market. As I mentioned earlier, our differentiator comes from the service excellence we offer to our clients. Being attentive to their needs and being there when they need you most remain at the heart of our activities. Our financial performances as well as the numerous accolades over the years have been a clear testimony of the trust from our customers. We also do understand fully that customer experience is the key to winning, growing and retaining customers. My focus will be to ensure that my team believes and lives this culture of service, ensuring at all times that we offer a delightful customer experience.

Golfing Mauritius /

Amongst the World’s Safest Destinations! These days, it’s possible to play golf all over the world. Even formerly tropical forested areas, or desert sands, have been transformed into lush green courses from Brazil to China via Dubai. At the same time, a golfer with unlimited means would have to consider an unending series of golf holidays in order to play a round on some of the approximately 32 000 registered golf courses located in the 118 nations making up the International Golf Federation.

24

As attractive as the fantasy of almost unlimited (in terms of the time needed) choice of golf courses and countries might appear, it also becomes quickly evident, unless you are a thrill seeker, or one who thrives in danger, that many of the destinations would rule out most golfers. One has to wonder how many golf aficionados are going to be tempted by the thought of playing a round in war zones, or other areas of conflict, where one literally has to take one’s life into one’s own hands to ensure surviving to the 18th hole. Which point brings us very nicely onto our very own destination… Are you aware that Mauritius is one of only ten countries in the world that features on the 2016 Global Peace

Index as being a country that is ‘completely free from internal and external conflict’? In a report that states that the world is becoming increasingly less peaceful, few countries in Europe or Asia even make this list! The think tank, The Institute for Economics and Peace, recently issued its 10th report, in which Mauritius features as ‘a nation that can be considered as truly at peace’. Our country joins an extremely select elite group of nations like Botswana, Chile, Iceland, Japan, and Switzerland. One of the many reasons why Mauritius rates so highly is because of the political stability that working democratic institutions bring to the nation. The country has no standing army, and its hodgepodge of cultures and

religions originating from Africa, Asia, and Europe has managed to get along peaceably, while respecting their differences. Levels of violent crime are extremely low. However, another unofficial statistic might well be that the first-time visitor to Mauritius is often surprised at bilingual friendliness of the locals, who are very welcoming and always ready to strike up a conversation. So… when you are planning your next golf holiday, think of Mauritius, one of the safest destinations in the world that can offer you a unique blend of very different golf cour ses, concentrated over a very small land area: set amidst lush tropical vegetation: sea, sun, and sand, combined with luxurious accommodation.

Interview /Mauritius Golf Tours

Mauritius,

The Emerging Golf Destination

No magazine about golf in Mauritius would be complete without an exclusive interview with the innovative Founder and Director of Mauritius Golf Tours, Olivier Lajeunesse. Our reporter J. Gilbert Grant digs deeper!

28

You seem to have made remarkable progress in a very short time on your project called Mauritius Golf Tours. Can you tell the readers what came first, the concept, or the vision; and, now that it is an operational reality, what are the key objectives of MGT? After almost a year, I believe that we can be proud of what we have achieved, and I’m looking forward to the years ahead. The concept came first, and the concept is 100% in the interest of the travelling golfer. The idea was to make golf bookings in Mauritius easy by providing complete assistance to the golfer. A golf trip to Mauritius can be complex in term of organisation. Knowing that Mauritius is only a dot in the Indian Ocean, the golfer needs to think about his flights,

itinerary, accommodation, golf clubs, golf transfer, airport transfer, select the different golf courses, and it can all quickly become a logistical nightmare. With the growing efforts of the golf resorts, and the current prestigious golf tournaments being held in Mauritius, our concept responds to a growing need. Golfers want to come to play here, and Mauritius Golf Tours wants to be the front line one-stop-shop platform for golf on our island through our website. Our objective is to grow the recognition of our island by proposing a diverse range of connected services around golf for the golfer. We also want to work alongside the tourism and related authorities, as well as the key golf actors to grow the recognition of our island.

Like all great business concepts, you must have believed or noticed that there was a gap in the market, or a felt need for such a platform. Can you explain just what that need is or was, and exactly how MGT responds to that need; just what is it that is unique about what MGT offers? Tourism is a pillar for the Mauritian economy, and we had to develop a strategy to reach our target market. We identified that there was a connection missing between the golf professionals and the golfer. Most bookings are now being done online or via an app, and we could not imagine launching this concept without a great website. The team has done an amazing job on the website to feature exactly who we are. With our specialised golf platform, the golfer can book his hotel, or round of golf, get informed, and discover all the world-class golf courses Mauritius has to offer. Our platform is unique as we act as a one-stop-shop for everything related to golf in Mauritius.

Again, for a business to succeed, it needs to have a unique proposal, or compelling selling point. How would you describe that unique service or offering that MGT brings to golf as a sport, and Mauritius as a destination? Many of our clients praise our human approach to the service that we provide; and, possibly, this is a key attribute of our service. We are certainly very passionate about what we do. We also grasped early on that each request we receive is unique and different. We made the choice to understand first the needs of the client before advising him. On our website, we have displayed golf packages for singles, couples, families, group of golfers, as well as corporates wanting to combine golf and corporate functions. For example, for family packages, the MGT team can assist the non-golfing family members when the husband/wife is on the golf course. Combining these services with the beauty of our island, we have a unique product. Our island’s beaches, landscape, people, history, and the rich culture is unique in the world. Most important is that our destination is safe which also vital when selecting a golf destination.

Clearly golfers across the world have literally thousands of destinations if they want to play a round of golf at an exotic destination. MGT seems to offer a blend of multiple and quite different courses, a major safe and upmarket tourist desti-

nation, including fabulous beaches. What is MGT doing differently to package all this into an attractive offer that golfers can’t refuse? As I’ve stated, our only interest is for the golfer. There is an element of trust that we want to convey to our clients which eventually reassures them. Clients can trust us because we know our partners and suppliers so we are able to direct them to the most appropriate package. The world has changed and business has changed. The pricing of our packages is a vital factor. Not only do we provide a hassle-free service, but our rates are very competitive. We do not hide or misrepresent additional charges; when clients obtain our rates there are no surprises. Our golf packages displayed on the website have been worked in a most cost-effective manner and include allied services such as accommodation, transfers, and the cost of rounds of golf. In addition, should the golfer wants to add an excursion, car rental, etc., we are able to help.

I note from your website that MGT will even go so far as to offer tailor-made golf holiday packages designed precisely according to what the golfer, along with family or friends, is looking for and expecting. Tell us more about how you go about meeting such a request? One of our star products is the golf tour experience where a complete itinerary is planned in detail together with the client. Currently, we offer two types of golf tours: the Platinum Golf Tours, and Authentic Golf Tours. This service is exclusively for the discerning traveller wanting a memorable tailor-made golf tour of Mauritius. If the client includes his contact number, one of our agents will contact him/her to discuss their ideas. Our website is a means to reach out, but we also want clients to feel that there are physical people behind the screen. The moment we have all the relevant information, the client no longer has to worry. The MGT team takes over the complete process, which in turn, allows clients simply to enjoy and experience fully the hospitality of our island. In partnership with Yu Lounge, we offer a unique service at the airport on arrival, where the handling of our guests starts at the footsteps of the aircraft. Mauritius is a luxury destination, and with this service we want to be the perfect solution, as well as a time saver for premium class clients.

Thank you for that in depth view of MGT and what it does exactly… Final question, then, where do you see the future for MGT as a business? I am indeed very excited by Mauritius Golf Tours, and what it could potentially become in the future. I love my island; I’m very patriotic, so I really want to be able to deliver the best golf experience to golfing visitors, and become the real reference as a ground handler. There are areas of improvement that we have already identified, and I am very concerned at finding the right solutions to these. Golf Course /Avalon Golf Estate

Avalon Golf Estate Avalon was the idyllic, mythical wood where apples grew of their own volition and rolling verdant fields produced crops without the intervention of man. It is to this rich history of Avalon, that this golf course was masterfully sculpted into the lush forested central plateau of Mauritius by internationally renowned golf course architect and ex-European Tour professional, Peter Matkovich.

Set on the volcanic slopes of the dormant Grand Bassin volcano at 500m above sea level and surrounded by tea plantations, Avalon is the highest place where one can play golf in Mauritius. The views of the southern coastline, lagoon and azure Indian Ocean are simply unprecedented

and, on a clear day, are visible from all 18 holes. In the true tradition of the legend of Avalon, we believe that members are to be treated as royalty and guests are members for the day. We look forward to hos ting you, make sure you bring your camera!

Accommodation /Shanti Maurice - A Nira Resort

Being aware that many meaningful moments occur at the dining table, resort chefs have a hearty appetite for innovation. Their menus, featuring local and global cuisine, using sustainable produce sourced from local island’s farmers and fishermen, are equally imaginative. Original food offerings include a rustic beachside Fish Shack, celebrating the bounty of the surrounding seas, serving freshly grilled and barbequed ingredients. For entertainment, Sega dancers from the local village delight guests. La Kaze Mama

44

enables guests to taste true authentic Mauritian home-style cooking in a memorable outdoor setting. Built in the style of a traditional rum shop, the “shabby-chic” Rum Shed, captures the essence of a bygone era, with tavern-like windows and doors as well as delightfully old-school décor. The bar offers the largest collection of rums in Mauritius, with over 180 types from 36 countries, as well as an impressive selection of rum-based cocktails. Recently launched in Stars Restaurant is ’Aquacasia’ Culinary Jewels of the Indian Ocean.

Inspired by resourceful street tra ders along with authentic family recipes passed down through countless generations, Aquacasia brings together genuine dishes from the isles of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Reunion, Indonesia and Western Australia. Guests are encouraged to explore the south of Mauritius, rather than being separated from it. The resort’s concierge is at hand to arrange a diverse range of off-property excursions, including scuba diving on the

reef, helicopter tours, parasailing and dolphin watching at Tamarind Bay. A tour of the Bois Cheri Tea Factory – who have been making tea for over 100 years – is a must, as well as guided walks and private picnics amongst dramatic landscapes. Tennis coaching and an array of 18-hole golf courses are in close proximity to the resort, and special arrangements can be made for guests. Meetings in paradise are possible. An air-conditioned meeting room with complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, and all

the conference extras one would expect at a 5-star resort can accommodate up to 100 delegates. With a philosophy built around creating ‘Meaningful Moments’, be it a thoughtful gesture from a member of staff or a dining experience unlike any other, Shanti Maurice delivers moments that really connect emotionally with guests.

Golfing Mauritius /

Blue Sky Golfing Golf historians generally agreed that the sport began in Scotland 1497. We should perhaps be grateful that the sport has now spread around the world; being played in over 150 countries and territories at the last count. Why are we fortunate? Consider that not everyone really enjoys playing golf in the often wet and windy Scottish conditions, with temperatures hovering just above zero! It is extremely likely that golf might have remained a very local sporting pastime had not the travellers of the British Empire taken it to sunnier climes in the 19th century.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club

According to historical tradition, a group of Scottish soldiers, transferred from India, oversaw the building of the first golf course in the Southern Hemisphere in 1844 on a local British Army base in Vacoas, in the centre of the island. Even to this day, the 18-hole Gymkhana Golf Club continues to exist as a private club. Without doubt these soldiers must have enjoyed the blue skies, sunshine, and tropical temperate weather that they could never have experienced back home in Scotland! With a surface area of 2000 km2, East of Suez, and on a per square kilometre basis, only the city-state of Singapore has more golf courses (15) than Mauritius. The United Arab Emirates may also have more courses (15), but these are spread over a much wider area. There is a saying in Mauritius that no one is ever more than 45 minutes from a beach. To this truism can now be added the following declaration: No one is more than an hour from a world class golf course in Mauritius! Mauritius enjoys well over 320 days of sunshine per year. At first, this might seem incorrect to people who have experienced weeks of summer rains, but this fails to take into account that the island has no less than six clear and distinct micro-climate zones. While it may well be raining over the central plateau, and with scattered showers over the east coast, it is extremely likely that no rain, or very brief passing showers, have occurred on the north or west coasts. Golfers on the island are much more likely to be affected by sunstroke or dehydration, than having their round cut short by rain‌ As a result of the micro-climates, and with each of the golf courses located strategically in different parts of the island, the slightly adventurous golfer willing to move a little beyond the comforts and confines of his own Golf Resort, is guaranteed to enjoy multiple rounds under azure skies, reflected in the multiple shades of blue of the surrounding Indian Ocean. Interestingly, it’s possible to see the ocean from every single golf course in Mauritius!

46

Avalon Golf Estate

Legend Golf Club

Tamarina Golf Club

Four Seasons Golf Club

In addition to the likely prospect that there will always be at least 2-3 courses where the sun is shining and the sky is blue, it must be appreciated that with each course is situated in its own micro-climatic zone, the surrounding décor, vegetation, and even the geology differs widely from course to course. A cross-section drawn from east to west of the island reveals 4 courses that could not be more different from each other… Off the East Coast, on its own island, is the Bernhard Langer designed course on Ile aux Cerfs, with its 9 lakes, 3 holes requiring tee shots across sea inlets, white sand bunkers, and volcanic rock outcrops. Less than a 30-minute drive up the coast, at Belle Mare, are two associated Belle Mare Plage courses, the Links and Legend, where aquatic features and sand traps combine with deer strolling across the fairways built on a former hunting estate. A mere 45 minutes away, on dual-carriageway roads, is the location of Mauritius’ newest course, and in the middle of the island, Avalon Golf Estate. Here, golfers play in cooler conditions, surrounded by gentle slopes with tea plantations, on a course that includes ravines, streams, and with holes designed to take into account the south-east trade winds that are clearly felt at that altitude. On top of that, players enjoy views of the Southern Indian Ocean in the distance. A further hour’s ride westward brings us to the West Coast and Tamarina Golf Estate. Here one could well mistakenly believe that one has been transported to the African Savannah, such is diffe rence in climate, vegetation, and temperature. This course includes the omnipresence of the towering Rempart Mountain, as well as unique challenge of a number of holes playing alongside, and across, the Rempart River gorge that runs through the estate.

Heritage Golf Club

So… while it is possible to enjoy a day’s golf in the sunshine destinations of Florida (USA), the Costa del Sol (Spain), the Western Cape (RSA), or the Sun Coast (Australia). None of these places are likely to match little Mauritius and its diversity and contrasts in terms of playing locations over such a small distance. And, the sun is shining most days on most courses too!

Golf Club Rental /Mycaddymaster.com

50

MyCaddyMaster.com Now open in Mauritius! After 3 years developing European golf destinations, MyCaddyMaster.com - quality golf club rental - was launched in March in Mauritius by Hugo de Senneville & Arnault Cassanet. MyCaddyMaster.com is a web service that provides golfers, golf courses, tour operators, resorts and short-term real estate agencies with a premium golf club rental service. How did the idea of MyCaddyMaster.com come up? The founder of MyCaddyMaster.com is a passionate golfer and loves travelling. After few bad experiences with flights (hassle of carrying many luggage in addition to his golf material, long waits at the oversized section, damaged clubs, baggage claim at arrival and additional costs) he realised that there was no quality rental available in golf destinations with a premium service. The company spent 3 years developing the offer which you can enjoy on www.mycaddymaster.com

… but golf club rental is already proposed by the Golf courses themselves ? Yes indeed, and we are no competitors: our offer is a complement to the golf course offer, as we do not speak to the same clients. Golf courses offer 18 holes golf club rental to occasional golfers who had no intention to have a golf holiday trip. MyCaddyMaster.com offers golf club rental to regular golfers who consider a serious golf holiday. They can experience of traveling in the lightest manner and can enjoy newer clubs (or other brands) at a very affordable price.

Actually our main customers in Europe are Golf courses. After considering us as a new actor on the market they realised that we all benefit from a partnership, as their club rental does not respond to the same demand. A simple example is the organisation of se minars with a golf competition. It is generally a nightmare for the Golf course which only invest in 10-15 bags when you can have a demand for 30-60 bags!

We also propose 3 types of collection for a maximum flexibility: – at the airport – in your car rental – at your resort/villa

Why do you consider your offer as premium ?

MyCaddymaster.com arrives at the perfect timing in Mauritius when the destination has been elected Best Golf Destination 2017. Mauritius can expect a growing volume of golfers in the coming years and new golf courses !

We would rather say that our service is premium, because in terms of price our bottom daily rental offer starts around 9€ per der day for a full bag. We propose a wide range of golf clubs and brands to our customers such as Callaway, XXIO and Mizuno with renewals every 18months.

Our customers can eventually enjoy custo mization of their bag with selecting appro priate wedges, putter and driver as well adding a range finder.

Golfing Mauritius /

Not just beaches and golf courses!

It is highly likely that the majority of decisions relating to a holiday break in Mauritius is rightly motivated by pictures of endless stretches of white beaches, swaying coconut trees, and lying on a beach lounger lapping up the sun. The golfer may have looked a little deeper into which 5-star golf resort offers the best and nearest courses, calculating how many rounds there are to be enjoyed during the number of days on the island. However, that would be committing a great injustice to Mauritius… Our compact little island is, it is true, surrounded by tropical beaches in safe lagoons. But it also has an extremely developed hinterland, where the most of the 1 250 000 people live. At first this might seem impossible, when you consider that over half of the island’s surface area is covered in sugar cane. Then, there are the mountains everywhere, basaltic relics of the Mauritius’ violent origins as a massive volcano that rose up out of the ocean.

60

But somehow, by the standards of the land masses of Europe, Africa, and Asia, where everyone in Mauritius originates from, its population has managed to strike up a remarkable modus vivendi amongst its competing cultures and religions on this tiny dot in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Today, visitors are privileged to be able to benefit from this heady inclement mix of history, culture, geography, and weather. Having admired the greenery and the mountains from the air, once on the ground, tourists are immediately struck by the mélange of the population. At any point on the journey to the hotel, one could be seem to be in the Indian countryside, or in a village in South East Asia; or even near the beaches, at an African fishing village. Closely associated with this colourful journey are the Hindu temples, Muslim mosques, traditional Catholic churches, all of which can be visited by arrangement.

The observant traveller will also have noticed that street food plays an important role in local eating habits. It is unlikely that one can find a busy street without its marchand of exotic fried Indian delights like dholl puri or farata, or gateau piment; all reminders of the Indian heritage, even though these dishes are almost non-existent back in India today. For those wanting something a little more formal, every town has its Chinese restaurant, where the local staple delicacies like mine frit, bouillon meefoon, or boulettes can be served up within minutes. For a wider menu, still with a strong dose of Mauritius, try those specialising in ‘Cuisine Créole, Chinoise, Indienne, et Européene’! If you are looking for more upmarket fare, the choices are very wide indeed in all of the above cuisines. Make a point of trying a Hakka (Chinese) delicacy you won’t find pretty much anywhere called prawn foo-yung; or even the delectable Mauritian specialities like giant freshwater prawns, heart of palm salad, roast boar before tasting a selection of locally brewed aged rums, made from sugar cane juice, of course. The Tea Route is worth a day out all by itself.

know more about Mauritius; its history, its flora and fauna? There are museums and parks covering the role of sugar in the economy, stamps, naval history, crocodile parks, botanical gardens, nature reserves that still contain some of the original ebony trees that the first Dutch settlers found on arrival in the 17th century. You can even visit our formerly extinct, now dormant, volcano near the town of Curepipe.

If one is seeking a more active holiday, the activities are really quite varied. Why not try your hand at skydiving, walking on the sea bed, swimming with dolphins, kitesurfing, scuba diving, zip lining, walking with loins, mountain climbing, or quad biking? Want to

All in all, for a couple where only 1 person plays golf, or for those who like to get a feel for how the locals live on a daily basis, it is possible to arrange excursions to meet whatever appeals to your body, your heart, your mind, or your senses.

Should you be seeking a more sedentary break, then our 5-star hotels provide all the pampering that the best spa services can offer. Sunset catamaran cruises with champagne can be arranged on the west coast. Why not combine this with some light exercise by going shopping in exotic locations like the Central Bazaar in the capital, where you can discover a local specia lity drink called Alouda. For something a little more formal the Caudan Waterfront, or Bagatelle Mall will remind you of home with all the world-famous retail brands, fast food outlets, and duty-free shopping.

Things To Do /Comajora LtĂŠe

66

Comajora ltee The island of Mauritius, nicknamed ‘Planisphere’ by Alberto Cantino, appears on the first maps of the world since 1502. Since then, the island began to be visited by a large number of sailboats.

Half a century ago, Gaëtan de Chazal, a man from one of the founding families of the French colonisation of Mauritius, then called Isle de France, expressed his passion for the island’s rich maritime history by launching the first manufacture of model ships. He employed local craftsmen whose skilled fingers reproduced reduced models, faithful to the original plans obtained from maritime museums around the world. Using noble materials such as teak and brass, craftsmen and women – some of whom have passed

on their craft to their children who still work there – have perpetuated this tradition of producing handcrafted artistic models that do full justice to the many ships that have visited our Island since the time of the Arab explorers, followed by the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French, and, finally the British. Thereafter, the workers extended the scope of their work, by adding ships from other parts of the world. At Comajora, each model is made by hand; each model is a museum piece!

67

Things To Do /Comajora Ltée

In addition to the making of models for sale, our workers have created: – A collection of 50 models, each more than one meter long, retracing the evolution of ships throughout the centuries, starting from 690 BC, until the ‘Hermione’, rebuilt in Rochefort in 1997. – A reproduction of the Battle of Vieux Grand Port (near the airport) in 1810 at the Ile de la Passe, which happens to be the only maritime victory of Napoleon over the English Royal Navy. This exceptional feat is now recorded for posterity with an inscription in the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. – A small museum collection of the framed half hulls of all the winners and challengers of the America’s Cup from 1851 to 1987, complete with sails and riggings. – Eighteen ships to immortalise the first European discoveries in the New World, beginning 1434 with Gil Eannes reaching the Rio del Oro, in South America, to finish with the Fram of Roald Amundsen reaching Antarctica in 1911. musée consiste d’une collection de 50 modeles de plus d'un metres de long de different pays

With more than 50 years of successful experience in the manufacture of ship models manufacture in Mauritius, we believe that enthusiasts buying ship’s models should be aware of certain key facts when making such a purchase. It is not unknown in the scale model industry in Mauritius that the quality of finished products differs widely. This is due to many factors, the most important being the quality of the materials used and whether the models are in fact in conformity with the plans. – The difference in using teak versus meranti woods for planking means a cost ratio of 3 to 1, whereas teak is also 100 times more stable. – There are many short cuts in the manufacturing process that a client might never see upon purchase. We are aware of cases where one manufacturer will use 4 or 8 frames, for a ship that requires 16, and needs to be strengthened at the prow and poop. Only afterwards, when the model has been subjected to changes in temperature and humidity, will any of this become evident. – Genuine model ships should be sculptured from wood, and completely handmade, totalling up to 1500 man hours per unit. Many manufacturers cast models from lead orbronze, something that can be done by thehundred each day. – Only beeswax should be used as it allows the rigging to remain in perfect conditions for years. Others will often use much cheaper candle wax, which is also a greatly inferior product.

Paradis Golf Club

Carved out of the landscape of a stunning peninsula at the south-western tip of Mauritius, the Paradis golf course emphasizes the site’s unique tropical feel. Tucked between Le Morne Brabant Mountain and the crystal clear waters of the lagoon, it offers guests staying at Paradis Beachcomber and Dinarobin Beachcomber a peerless combination of stunning scenery and challenging play.

Counting among the very few golf courses in Mauritius located within a resort’s premi ses, this 18-hole par 72 course of 6,478 yards designed by David Dutton offers 5 diffe rent tees. Much of the creative competitive design is attributable to the international golf legend, Tony Johnstone who has spent several years playing the course through the various stages of its evolution. This spectacular course with immaculate greens and fairways running alongside the Indian Ocean is a pleasure to play, providing an exciting and challenging experience for all skill levels. Swirling mountain winds make the front 9 a challenge requiring precision, while accuracy is a must to tackle the back 9. Indeed, each hole is unique, presenting the golfer with a different experience each time and the need to use all 14 clubs in the bag. Moreover, a Golf Academy offers exceptional playing and practice facilities with indivi dual training and coaching using the latest in golf instruction technology. A fitting station operated by the German golf club manufacturer, B.i.G. has also been installed recently to enhance guests’ experience. A particularly nice feature of the Paradis Golf Club is accessibility, the first tee being only 20 metres from Paradis Resort reception. Callaway clubs are also available for rent, and the Pro Shop is a place where style meets golf with a wide range of apparel and equipment. And when the day is almost over, the setting sun casts its last beams on the golf course, offering a magical and poetic sight to soak in from the clubhouse.

Interview /François Eynaud

François Eynaud

Chief Executive Officer Veranda Leisure Hospitality (VLH) In 2015, the Heritage Resorts held the first ever tri-sanctioned Order of Merit event on the European Tour, Sunshine Tour, and the Asian Tour. The AfrAsia Mauritian Open was a resounding success… How did a relatively unknown, in golfing terms, small island like Mauritius get to host such a prestigious event? Mauritius may be a small island, but the quality of its golf courses and hospitality rival the best destinations in the world, which made it an obvious choice for the three Tours wanting to collaborate for the first time on neutral soil. Heritage Golf Club had been looking since 2013 to organise a major golf tournament in Bel Ombre. Ryan Dodds, the Heritage Golf Club General Manager at that time made contact with Mr Grant Wilson, C.O.O. of the Sunshine Tour. The Sunshine Tour had already some co-sanctioned events with the European Tour and they were looking to organise the first tri-sanction event with the Asia Tour. The Sunshine Tour was nominated as the ‘Lead Tour’ and came to Heritage in 2014 for the first time to inspect the Heritage Golf Club facilities. Quite frankly, they were blown away by the quality of what they saw, and the host venue for the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open was confirmed shortly after. The first edition was supposed to take place in May 2014, but we did not manage to secure a title sponsor on time; thus, it was postponed to May 2015 when AfrAsia Bank took the bold decision at the time to support the project. Ryan Dodds and Grant Wilson were really the two key actors enabling the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open to feature on the world golf calendar.

88

The first edition of such an ambitious event is always a challenge, yet the outcome exceeded all expectations, providing Mauritius and all the sponsors with huge visibility and publicity across all continents. It was most importantly a great testimony of enthusiastic teamwork between the public and private sector, the sponsors, the organisers, the three Tours, with strong support from Christophe Curé of the Mauritius Golf Federation.

The event in 2015 was won by George Coetzee, with the top 3 players on the leader board coming from South Africa, Denmark, and Singapore with over 130 participants from 32 countries. In 2016, Wang Jeunghun from Korea, with his runners up coming from Bangladesh and Belgium; in total from 126 players from 31 countries… Can we expect such a large turnout in terms of players, nationalities; are you expecting any of the world’s top players this year? Indeed, the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open has the particularity of being able to draw the most diverse fields in world golf from three continents. The change of date from May to November was recommended by the European Tour in order not to clash with the Players Championship on the PGA Tour in May, and to attract more top European players. In the 2015 first edition, George Coetzee, ranked 62 in world, won a breath-taking play off against Thorbjorn Olesen and improved his world ranking to 58, which enabled him to qualify for the U.S. Open. Yes, we are expecting an even stronger player field for 2017 at

Heritage. The top players will be able to fly to Mauritius after the Race to Dubai season-ending, DP World Tour Championship which will be held from the 16 – 19 November 2017. The change of date to November affords us longer daylight hours, with the result that we have been able to increase the number of players from 126 to 156; with 48 players from each of the sanctioning tours. Indeed, you can look out for exciting player announcements soon.

Obviously, in collaboration with the other partners, it must have been quite a job to succeed in getting such a major breakthrough event to be held at Heritage Resorts… Did you feel you were breaking new ground for Heritage, as well as for Mauritius once it was confirmed; today, do you feel like a ‘pioneer’ in regard to holding this event in Mauritius? Yes, we realised from the outset that we were pitching for a world class event which would make golfing history in Mauritius… to us, it was on the same level as bringing a ‘Formula One’ race to Mauritius. It was very bold and daring bet for all parties involved, in light of the huge budgets involved, of (nearly €3 million in total). We created the company ‘Heritage Events Ltd’, which also owns the rights of the tournament, and the ‘Mauritius Open’ title. The teams of the whole Group, ENL, Rogers, VLH, Heritage, were so proud to show the world the Domaine de Bel Ombre tourist destination that we have built since 2004. It achieved huge recognition for the owners and the teams. We were even more excited when the first edition was a resounding success in 2015. Media coverage by 42 broadcas ters, reaching 450 million households, the 900 online articles produced during the tournament week, and the buzz on social media were fantastic. Most satisfying was the feedback from the players praising the faultless organisation, and the warm welcome they received. From that moment, we knew that this tournament would grow from strength to strength, and that we would fulfil our vision: ‘To make it the most beautiful golf tournament in the world!’.

The AfrAsia Mauritius Open has certainly put Mauritius on the map as a premier golf destination in terms of exposure and brand recognition… At a practical level, what have you seen in terms of increased tourist numbers, and even golfers wanting to enjoy a round at the Heritage Resorts; are you aware of any of the tournament players coming back to Mauritius for a holiday… Do they play a round of golf to relax? The positive benefits of such an event are multiple. At a very practical level, we saw our number of golf rounds at Heritage Golf Club increase by 20% in 2015/2016. And, that triggered our decision to build a second golf course. Heritage Golf Club is now very well known worldwide. We have signed many agreements with prestigious golf clubs, hired several well-known players as ambassadors, and been nominated Best Indian Ocean Golf Course at the annual World Golf Awards for three years in a row since 2014. Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort, where 30% of the clientele are golfers, has also just won the Best Indian Ocean Golf Hotel. Such an event attracts other events, and Heritage Golf Club receives many requests as a result. To answer your question precisely…, it was their first trip to

the island for virtually all of the professionals that competed in 2015. But, many have returned since for holidays, including Jaco Van Zyl, Brandon Stone, and George Coetzee that we are aware of. The players love coming to Mauritius, many declared that it felt like a holiday in the middle of their normal work schedule. Some have expressed an interest in buying a villa here, and they definitely want to bring their family and friends when they come for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. Golf is a sport and a passion that attracts big networks of high worth individuals. Therefore, positioning Mauritius as a paradise golf destination will create jobs and benefit many related sectors of the Mauritian economy like financial services and property. This kind of event creates tremendous exposure; but more importantly, it creates credibility and legitimacy in the minds of discerning golfing tourists.

There is evidently a lot of excitement brewing about this year’s AfrAsia Mauritius Open, which is returning to the Heritage Golf Course once again… What advance exclusive news are you able to divulge to the readers of our Magazine, just to whet their appetite a bit? Firstly, Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort and Le Chateau de Bel Ombre will be undergoing some major renovations in June. The players and visitors will, as a result, be able to enjoy a totally refreshed environment during the event. We are also be renovating our golf course bunkers ahead of the tournament. There are many attractions, activities and events planned before and during the tournament itself. We will make announcements at a later stage this year. One of the major objectives of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is, with the MGF support, to grow the game of golf in Mauritius, and to make this sport accessible and attractive to as many Mauritians as possible. The ProAm events two days prior to the tournament dates will as usual be very attractive for our VIP guests and selection winners who will have the privilege to play with the world’s golf top players. We are also planning a ‘Play the Tournament Course’ after the event activities and Golf Clinics for kids by some players. This year’s field will host a recent major champion, but let’s keep everyone guessing for the moment…

The event in 2015 underwent some changes in 2016… what are the major differences that the players and public can expect for the 2017 edition? As mentioned above, the players’ field is increasing from 126 to 156 players with a few more ‘big names’. We are also getting a much stronger commitment and involvement from the European Tour this year. We are preparing special packages for the golfers from Reunion Island and South Africa to enable them to attend the event more easily. To conclude, I would like to thank all our sponsors for their enthusiastic support, obviously in the first place AfrAsia Bank, but also Rogers, CIEL/Anahita, MTPA, Villas Valriche, Air Mauritius, Jaguar, Illy Coffee, DSTV, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Mautourco, Bougainville Rhum, Ernie Els Wine, Mauritius Telecom, Coca-Cola, and Phoenix Beverages; not forgetting the hundreds of individuals who contribute to make this event such a roaring success!
