Letter From the Assistant Head of School, Principal November 2011 Posted 11/01/2011 04:00PM
Dear Parents, Had you been walking the halls and peeking into classrooms on a recent morning, you might have seen the following-Sophomores standing around lab tables, goggled, aproned, awaiting reactions from within fizzing beakers. Small groups of juniors crowding around tables and sprawling on the carpet, reflecting on the significance of the final conceit in a John Donne sonnet. Blindfolded Spanish 1 students following directions from a partner to find their shoes. Physics students, working on projectile motion, calculating the location of a target to match with an angle and spring setting for a marble launcher. This is academics at Episcopal High School. More than anything else, I think, what distinguishes the academic program at EHS is engagement. We are not simply about conveying material and testing knowledge. We are about connecting with students and engaging them in creative ways. Yes, we convey knowledge and we assess progress. There is a body of knowledge we want students to know: for example, to speak and write another language, to understand the complexities of Macbeth, to know the laws of physics, to understand movements in history. We also teach students how to learn: how to develop and support a thesis, how to use sources to research answers to a question, how to solve a geometry or calculus problem. But we hope, in the four years we have with our students in six teaching departments including 90 courses, 37 honors or AP, that each student will find something inspiring. It may be black holes or Chinese language and culture or 20th century American theater or macroeconomic theory. Whatever it is, we are looking for the moment. At EHS, as former NAES Executive Director Peter Cheney suggests about Episcopal schools, we strive to be a place “where individual identity and achievement are balanced with a sense of connectedness to God, the community, and the perspectives and needs of others. It is a place where questions and questioning are valued above answers and answering. With Cheney in mind, I believe that our classrooms are the training grounds, collaborative environments, with teachers posing questions to which they sometimes have no answers; together, the students and teachers observe, reflect, challenge, and defend. The classroom, as well as the school, is based on respect, an invisible understanding among members of the community, which preserves the dignity of each individual. We know that there are obstacles along the way and that students learn from their mistakes. A low test grade provides the opportunity to assess what went wrong and to learn a new way to move forward. We
encourage students to challenge themselves and to pick themselves up and move on if they stumble. According to a California school head, it is “those things that surprise and dishearten us [that] may carry our deepest lessons.” I believe that we at Episcopal High School encourage students to take intellectual risks just as the School as a whole has done. Our not ranking students and recording only end-of-the-year grades for yearlong courses downplays competition and allows students to recover from mistakes. Providing choice in junior and senior academic electives and requiring fine arts and religion courses means that students must take courses in which they’re not necessarily comfortable. Students take risks in running for student office, in offering ideas in the classroom, in speaking with a teacher or administrator about a concern or new idea. Above all, we encourage our students to strive for excellence. As Ned Smith said in Chapel early in the year, “There is no bell curve for behavior or motivation.” We expect our students to try their best and work to exceed their own expectations of themselves. I hope to see you around campus soon and often. Best regards, Nancy Laufe Eisenberg Assistant Head of School, Principal

Meet the New Faculty and Staff Posted 11/01/2011 04:00PM
New faces grace the halls and classrooms of EHS this year. The September, October, and November issues of Windows feature introductions of these newest members of our community.
Professional photographer Jaime Collier earned her master’s in photojournalism from UT-Austin and looks forward to teaching photography at EHS, sharing her passion for the art, and seeing the amazing and creative work the students produce. “The students here have such a zest for life and for the mission of the Four Pillars,” she observes. Her teaching experience includes volunteering work at the juvenile detention program in Travis County and working as a photography instructor at The Houston Center for Photography, Chrysalis Middle School, and McReynolds Middle School. Besides shooting photos, she enjoys gardening and chasing after her two Brittany Spaniels, Remi and Winnie. To view Jaime’s portfolio, you can visit her blog at www.casadecamera.com. Brooke Gonzalez is a new member of the World Languages Department. She taught previously at Cinco Ranch High School and will teach Spanish I and II at EHS. “High school kids are a blast!” she exclaims. “I love to watch them excel in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.” EHS students impress her with their poise and friendliness. She says that during her first visit on campus, a student came up and greeted her. Besides teaching Spanish she will coach boys basketball and help with SOS and the paintball club. When she isn’t conjugating verbs in front of the classroom she and her husband, Steve, like to visit Houston restaurants, work out, watch movies and cheer for college football and basketball games. Brooke is a graduate of Texas Tech where she received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a master’s in linguistics.

Sergio Huston, an alum from the Class of 1992, one of Episcopal’s first graduating classes, returns to the School to work in the Theatre Department as a part-time costume designer. After graduating from EHS, Sergio studied costume and fashion design at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and then earned his bachelor’s in Arts and Technology from the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked previously at Plano’s Collin College where he worked in the Fine Arts Department and Art History Department. Some of his responsibilities included producing recruiting materials, art faculty websites, and teaching screen printing and digital art. “The EHS arts pillar was the basis for my lifelong interest in the arts; I hope I can provide that same inspiration for the next generation.” And joining the School as a part-time music instructor… Holly Butler

Remarkable Opportunities. Unlimited Possibilities. We could stop right there and that would tell you everything you need to know about Episcopal High School. Our children, Carter ‘12 and Caroline ‘14, have enjoyed the opportunity to reach their full potential each day at EHS. We are amazed and thankful for a school that encourages students to leave their comfort zones and participate in all Four Pillars with the understanding that the faculty/staff will be there to lead, support, and guide them to their desired outcome. We understand that all of our students have various needs, and Episcopal High School is well-equipped with the staff and classroom tools to meet those required needs. Opportunity is unlimited, and the possibilities are endless. On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, the Benitez Chapel was filled with sounds of excitement and anticipation as we began the year with our 28th flag presentation ceremony. The students created an ambiance of eagerness and enthusiasm as they entered Benitez Chapel. The faculty and staff eagerly awaited the opportunity to educate and challenge students in and out of the classroom. And in the not too distant background, the sounds of construction filled the air as the new academic building began to take shape. Another school year is upon us, and the campus is filled with a remarkable group of students, faculty, staff, and parent volunteers. Please take this opportunity to unlock the unlimited possibilities for our students, faculty, and staff by participating in the 2011-2012 Annual Fund, Remarkable Opportunities. Unlimited Possibilities. As chairmen of the Annual Fund team, we are asking for your financial support. Last year 70 percent of EHS parents contributed, and of course we would like to increase the level of participation this year to 100 percent.

Student Achievement - November 2011 Posted 11/01/2011 04:00PM
Student Achievement Eagle Scout Kevin Steinhart Earns Accolades for YMCA Project Senior Kevin Steinhart’s Eagle Scout service project, a ball carrier and supplies for the Weekley YMCA, was highlighted in an article in the West University edition of Your Houston News. Click here to read the article. Creative Writing and Journalism Students Win Writing Awards Senior creative writing students Elisa O’Neal and Isidora Stankovic were among 520 students chosen as outstanding writers in the 2011 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. The recipients were chosen from 1,649 students nominated in their junior year by their teachers from throughout the United States, Canada, and the Virgin Islands. The Achievement Awards in Writing were established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation. Assessments of student writing are based on students’ samples of their own best prose or verse and on impromptu themes that are written under supervision. A team of English teachers judge the writing, looking especially for writing that demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language. In the journalism department, Knight Times managing editor Conor McKinney received a Gold Circle Award for his editorial, “A Slightly Awkward Editorial Stance.” Click here to read the EHS web news. Chorale Members Progress to State TPSMEA Three Chorale members have progressed to the State round of judging for this year’s Texas Private School Music Educators Association All-State Choir: Ben Carter ’12, Bass; Allison Asarch ’13, Soprano; and Autumn Watt ’15, Soprano. Students who compete in TPSMEA prepare music from a prescribed list of material and record it under the direction of their teacher at the own school. This recording is then judged in two rounds of contests, the Regional and the State. By ranking in the Top 25 of their section (voice) these students will go on to the State round of judging, which will take place in Dallas in November.
