MY-SELF A personal perspective of what city and architecture mean to me, going beyond to a primitive state rather than a idealistic one. I question myself the meaning of the city and the solutions proposed by noted architects and leaders in reference to the challenges that post modernity brought to us and the spatial inequality in urban centers. I expose intimate projects where architecture acts as a conduit, not a solution of a method; instead, architecture becomes another component. These projects were worked in different scales, architecture, milieu, society, culture, art and community nexus. Each of these projects seek punctual solutions which makes them multidisciplinary.

Urban Restoration “Barrio de Tepito” Tepito bring with it one of the most known reputation across México. It is commonly believed that Tepito is one of the most dangerous, fierce and marginal places in the nation, as well of being a neighborhood with a high rate of organized crime and piracy. Despite the level of accuracy of its reputation, Tepito is a neighborhood rich in tradition and culture. During the 70´s, urban artist Daniel Manrique started a cultural movement named “Tepito Arte Acá” which consist in the meaning shift of the popular culture and their sense of belonging. Today Casa Barrio Tepito and “ELITEP” are still working under the ideology of the mater.

TEPITO

The project of “Urban restoration in the neighborhood of Tepito” is a multidisciplinary project that has an overall goal to generate and reinforce communitarian inter-relationships, as well as space appropriation. It doesn´t intend to be an authoritarian nor mandatory project. It was developed by a team constituted by me, “Casa Barrio Tepito” and CICLO, working as individuals and collective, generating an excellent multidisciplinary team that works in different scales and approaches. The approach that refers to my expertise is urban-architectonic oriented. The main objectives are identifying trough participatory diagnosis, community field work and mapping of spaces which are suitable of forming and becoming dignified places for the community. Trough urban acupuncture we expect to generate a net of public spaces that supply the demand of urban facilities in Tepito. The necessity of recovering spaces in Tepito is driven by the lack of harnessing of those same spaces, keeping them in a state of decadence, overridden by “tianguis” (informal trade), others by homeless people and finally because some spaces are used as site landfill. As consequence the habitants of Tepito don´t have anywhere to recreate, recreation doesn´t exist for them, if they were out for a walk, there´s tianguis, if they went to the park, there´s landfill, if they went to their town square, there are drug dealers operating. The social-spatial dynamics of Tepito are complex, and that´s why the approach is not to act directly upon them, instead we seek alternative solutions which are driven by a main axis bases on activate these public spaces with art and culture.

Today the school remains in ruins, becoming a source of urban infection, filled with garbage and crime. The school in in the political limit between 2 districts, Cuauhtémoc and Venustiano Carranza, which is the district where the scool is found. THE BRIDGE

Pedestrian bridge, Tepito, México - Abandoned Program Pedestrian bridge rehabilitation arriving, circulate, inspire Location México City Client Tepito neighborhood Year 2017 Square Meters 60 Architects Mauricio Vergara, CICLO, DMT The rehabilitation is planned in the pedestrian bridge located in “Eje 2 Ote.” street which divides and unites two political entities. (Venustiano Carranza and Cuauhtémoc). Promoting culture in public space and citizen participation via artistic projects and capacitation programs, is the overall goal of the rehabilitation. Objetive: Explore underused space choices for usage trough an urban-architectonic installation which invites to reflect the meaning of use and underuse of public spaces in Tepito and cities in general.

A bridge stands as a universal symbol of circulation and connection between two points, at the same time a bridge is a metaphor of new beginnings and change transitions. The intervention looks forward to spread concepts like: dignified, available, safe, sustainable, social, comfortable public spaces that promotes local identity and equity.

XI INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP Landscape and Architecture The workshop creative process and methodology is based on three main concepts: Site, program and concepts. As participants we applied those guidelines in the project developments. The workshop gathers architects and designers from all over the world which debate and propose possible solutions, enriched by their international conceptions and professional experiences, to urban-architectonic adversities presented by the workshop.

The project requires the reassessment and dynamization of Castellfollit de la Roca old core through a landscape routing based on specific actions to rediscover the singularity of the site´s basaltic cliff. The landscape routing will restore the protagonist character of La Garrotxa Natural Park. Objectives: Stablish a link between Castellfollit de la Roca old core and its surrounding natural milieu and emphasize the emotion of transition between exterior and interior in the landscape routing.

MY ENDEAVOR I selected the most relevant projects which I´ve participated as collaborator and leader, all of whom are professional. In Cobalto, which is an architectonic firm I´ve work for, you will find remodeling projects with industrial-mexican style. Irún is about an urban project with a large impact in the city. These kind of projects are projects which I can relate to, because they consist on challenges that reality bring to us. This reality brings with is specific problems with solutions that can become uncertain. I strongly believe that those pronblems can be properly solved, first by disort them through diagnosis and analysis, generating more punctual proposal for the specific necessities of a client.

Urban Structure Intervention Irún, Spain. EUROPAN 2015 proposal. Irún was selected because its problematic took interest from members of the team and meant a challenge. The main objective was to re-signify the city downtown. At first instance, the city lacks of a proper downtown because it is divided in two parts by a railway. Our solution was bases on local re-densification, tubing the railway and promote new social dynamics that give place to a tourist-housing complex.

MY MIND Which is the way to imagine? Which it the way to land our thoughts and dreams into reality? Abstraction is essential in my creative process. The key point is transition between abstraction and generating suitable architectonic proposals are diagrams, lectures and knowledge. In this part of my portfolio, I selected projects which consist in abstractions and images that inquire my thoughts.

Futurology Barcelona, Spain Two postures are presented: being futurologist or being utopic. In Spanish and followings its most superior language institution, Royal Spanish Academy, we can define: Futurology: 1. f. Set of studies that are intended to predict the future. Utopia: 2. f. Imaginary representation of a future society which have favorable characteristics for human common good. In terms of this picture, being futurologist was chosen, in a 100 years, cities will suffer (maybe some cities are suffering now) social and spatial inequality, cities in which privileged ones will live in the heights of the city and the less fortunate will live at the city ground level.

Photography Everywhere My photography, which by its own has a conceptual urban style, has been an essential tool for my creative process. The essence that I seek while photographing the city, is an essence that shows how social dynamics work in that particular site, an essence that highlights decadence, abeyance and contrast in daily urban life.
