Have a nice day - The mean brigade has hijacked the phrase “Have a nice day”. I was shopping the other day and had an unpleasant encounter with an aggressive saleswoman. After a bit of an altercation she managed to get in the last word when she called out sarcastically as I walked away, “Have a nice day.” What a snarly way to trash a saying that is meant to be friendly. Be careful how you use this phrase. “Have a nice day” is developing a bad reputation. Brigidine Jones

Meeting people in public places - As a newcomer to Mawson Lakes, one of the nice things I notice is the small size of private yards but the big areas devoted to open space for public use. This is very good for meeting people. It means the children go outside to play and they meet other children, and the adults talk together in the parks. Jennifer Guo

Seven Strategic Priorities - South Australia has tremendous opportunities ahead, but also fresh challenges. Hence the government has compiled Seven Strategic Priorities. These are areas where we believe we can make the most difference for South Australia’s future. An overview of the strategic priorities can be downloaded from http://saplan.org.au. I encourage you to read the priorities and share and discuss them.

Weed attack - With spring comes weeds, all along the footpaths and in the cracks in the driveways. But weeds are easy to remove. A can of weed spray costs less than $10 at the supermarket or hardware store. One spray and they’re gone, but if left, they multiply as the seeds drop and blow about all over the suburb. Keep ML beautiful. Garden lover

When I set up my home- based salon I asked Living to create an advertisement for me and I booked a block of ads over three months. Linda came to my place, took photographs, talked about my business, determined my preferred colours, and then turned it all into a stunning ad. It was so easy for me. The results have been phenomenal! Within weeks my diary was full. Advertising in Living has been so fantastic I don’t need to advertise anywhere else.

Active Brains - Greetings from Melbourne where I’m now studying for a PhD in injury surveillance at Monash University. The other day I heard a talk by Dr Helena Popovic, author of the new book In Search of My Father and it made me remember the discussions we had in our fitness classes about active brains. The book is a moving story of what happens when life throws together a busy, enthusiastic, doctordaughter and her bereaved, disenchanted, dependent father. What happens when a parent needs parenting? Are there steps we can take to defy dementia and build a better brain and prevent the cognitive decline most of us believe is inevitable with ageing? Worth a read. Best wishes.
