The Space Industry Our lives are becoming more and more dependent on technology situated in outer space. It happens when we order a package from Amazon, use our smartphones, skype, rely on car navigation and call an uber. Satellites are used in agricultural management, streaming media, power networks as well as military operations. So far, activity in space has been relatively peaceful, but countries, including Australia, are placing military assets in space that provide information to the army, navy and airforce. These assets need protection. "The war zone of the future will not depend on troops on the ground, but will be fought in space using technological sabotage to destroy enemy satellites, weapons and computer operated systems," said Tim White, President of the Law Society of SA, a profession grappling with new space protocols. It's frightening to hear that outer space may become the new 'theatre of war.' The USA has already announced Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to anyone with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes. See page 19 for advertising details. a 'Space Force' to combat the highly competitive interstellar arms race. It’s a reason why space defence is a growing industry in Australia and why Mawson Lakes is home to significant space research (see page 8) and defence intelligence. The latest installation in Mawson Lakes, is the Raytheon Defence Centre, being built right now in Technology Park. It's a $50 million facility for the manufacture and maintenance of missiles to counter airborne threats such as enemy drones. (Reference MLL/May 2019). If space becomes the new 'theatre of war' and our satellites are knocked out in a cyber attacks, imagine the crippling chaos to our transport systems, hospitals, financial operations and communication systems. Our defence of these instruments is vitally important and a large number of defence initiatives are being developed in the defence precinct in Mawson Lakes.

Where’s the post office? What a pleasure it is to live in Mawson Lakesthe vibrancy, the largest campus of UniSA and the growing techno and defence industries. BUT where is the Post Office? If there is a fortunate person able to obtain a permit to operate a Post Office in Mawson Lakes they will have a secure and thriving business. It's unbelievable that in the biggest suburb in Adelaide we have to travel by car several kilometres to reach the nearest PO, or have to cross the busiest road in Adelaide to reach this essential service. - Micky Wilson Fuel to the fire Isn't it amazing how we are being encouraged to holiday at home and to take an empty esky to the fire-ravished communities to help out the locals to start the rebuilding process, but we have the petrol stations increasing the price of fuel. So while the everyday Aussie is trying to do the right thing and help out where we can, the greediness of some of the petrol stations is shining brighter than the fires ever did. - Karen Cornish NEED4BEAD Council member pay packets Further to Colin Rizk’s comment in MLL/Nov about recording council meetings, I see very few council members attending community functions. It seems that councils are no more than kindergartens for aspiring politicians. I can list a few such people in Salisbury council. My rates keep going up and so do the pay packets of council members. Council rates should not be used to pay the mayor and elected members of local councils, except for reasonable expenses which are totally transparent. The positions should be for community-minded members of the public, not for aspiring politicians. - Jayco Dog droppings I've been living in Mawson Lakes for over a year now and love the vast walking trails. Lately I have seen a lot of dog droppings left on walkways and green grass areas. Irresponsible dog owners are disrespectful to the rest of the community. The 4

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 153, March 2020

council provides plenty of doggy bags so there shouldn't be any excuse for not picking up your dog droppings. - Michael Du Lighting the footpath My house fronts onto the footpath running along Dry Creek between the rail interchange and Euston Walk. The footpath is always busy with people going to the station and the shop, but at night this is a dangerous place because there is no overhead lighting. It’s a long stretch of pathway and even where there are a few street lights beyond Euston Walk they are far apart. It’s time the council installed lighting in this area for the safety of residents. - Lubo Target shot through It comes as no surprise that Target is leaving Mawson Lakes this month. The location was bad, in a deadend strip with little passing traffic. I forgot we even had a Target store here. - Tracy Finney Climate independent source of water Of all the Earth's water, 97 percent is salt water, only 1 percent is fresh water available for humans to drink, and 2 percent is frozen. Australia is the driest continent on earth yet it is an island surrounded by water. Why don’t we build desalination plants (like Saudi Arabia, Israel, Libya, Spain, USA) all around our coastline using solar power to drive the industry? We could pour the water into our extensive river systems and supply the needs to towns, industry and agriculture. - Eddie Sharif Appreciation I just wanted to email a genuine thank you to the hard working team at MLL. I genuinely enjoy the magazine and look forward to it appearing in my mailbox every month. I’m moving to another suburb and the one thing I’ll miss more than anything else is the community magazine. Keep up the incredible work! - Jessica Payne

Business: Back from the Brink What do you do when your business dries up due to external circumstances beyond your control? This was the topic of conversation at the Polaris Business Centre in Mawson Lakes where Kevin Ferguson, a sheet metal manufacturer and Suzanne Paul, a real estate agent, talked about business adversity, and how they came back from the brink. Kevin faced losing a big customer, overseas competition and businesses that went bust leaving him without payment. He had to sell his house to refinance his business, and reduce his staff. "It took me several years to recover and my sense of worth plummeted but I learned a lot from the experience, particularly

to set small goals and not put all my eggs in one basket. Diversification is a safeguard."

Running a small business is like running a marathon. It’s not a sprint. It's a long challenge with a lot of hurdles." - Kevin Harrison Suzanne had just started her business when the government brought in new regulations and the banks restricted lending, leaving her high and dry. "I had nurtured my new business like a baby, taking little steps, but I overreached and I needed to refocus with the help of a mentor from Polaris. I also realised I needed to understand finance better and focus on the activities that I was good at. It took time to recover but my advice is never give up and be aware of and grab opportunities."

At the Polaris business event, Mike Richards (Polaris Coordinator of Business Services) Greg Ratsch (Economic Development and Urban Policy Manager), Kevin Harrison( Managing Director KJ Fabrication) and Suzanne Paul (Meier Paul Real Estate).

SPECIAL FEATURE

SPACE & DEFENCE Space is the fastest growing industry in the world and Mawson Lakes is playing a significant role.

"There’s exciting energy in South Australia as half a trillion dollars is being spent on space research and innovation", said Darin Levitt, Director of Space at the South Australia Space Industry Centre. In this issue, Mawson Lakes Living brings you up-to-date news about happenings in Mawson Lakes.

L3Harris in Mawson Lakes L3Harris Technologies has opened a new office in Mawson Lakes to support Australian naval shipbuilding programs and strengthen the company’s collaboration with Defence South Australia. The new office will act as a base for integrating and delivering L3Harris’ advanced Integrated Platform Management

System and Electronic Warfare System, which are being fitted to the 12 new offshore patrol vessels. At the launch in ML (pictured) Premier Steven Marshall said L3Harris’ decision to establish its presence at Mawson Lakes is another vote of confidence in the growing defence precinct, which continues to attract national and international defence giants.

Health in Space Australian researchers are developing sensors to monitor health in space through the testing of bodily fluids such as sweat and saliva. Associate Professor Craig Priest from the University of South Australia leads research into the development of microfluidic sensor platforms designed to monitor human health factors, which will be an initial focus of the international partnership with NASA. He said the exciting research is harnessing nanotechnology and microfluidics research at the Mawson Lakes campus. "You can imagine in a space environment where you’ve got zero gravity, radiation and other extreme conditions, the ability to know if things are going wrong quickly is very important. We are aiming to work with NASA to develop non-invasive health self-

8

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 153, March 2020

assessment, and possibly wearable tools that will analyse things like sweat and saliva and track health effects in real time." Assoc Prof Priest said such technologies could ultimately be used for applications on earth. "Increasingly health management is going to go towards looking for early signs so we hope that some of these sensors will be able to head off health challenges quite quickly." he said. "Whatever technologies that are developed in space research are eventually going to find their way into our pockets or onto our wrists and it’s those types of technologies that I believe are going to be the game changers for health management and early intervention in space and on earth," he said. Ed Associate Professor Craig Priest is working with NASA to develop sensors to monitor human health in space.

The International Space Station The International Space Station (ISS) pictured on the front cover of this issue, is a habitable artificial satellite in low earth orbit. The ISS program is a joint project between five participating space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). The ISS serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory in which crew members live and conduct experiments in biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology and other fields. This month, cadets from Parafield Squadran Air League will be talking to astronauts on the ISS. You can watch the International Space Station pass overhead from Mawson Lakes. It is the third brightest object in the sky, looks like a fast-moving plane only much higher and thousands of miles an hour faster, and it's easy to spot if you know when to look up.

It circles the Earth in roughly 92 minutes and completes 15.5 orbits per day! All sightings will occur within a few hours before or after sunrise or sunset. This is the optimum viewing period as the sun reflects off the space station and contrasts against the darker sky. Visit www.spotthestation.nasa.gov for viewing times.

The cost of keeping cool A ceiling fan in my office keeps me cool during the day and a fan over my bed keeps me comfortable at night as the gentle air wafts unnoticeably overhead. It costs only 2c per hour to run a ceiling fan. A pedestal fan costs even less. Compare this to the cost of my ducted air conditioner which I use only in heatwave conditions. It costs $1.66 per hour. The energy we use is measured in kilowatts (kW) and the more kW an appliance draws the more we pay. A ceiling fan has an hourly energy use of 0.09 kW whereas my air conditioner has an hourly energy use of 6.0kW Conscious cooling means being aware of your energy use and looking at ways to keep your house cool with less energy input. Cooling strategies include closing the blinds or roller shutters before the heat kicks in, hanging washing on a line instead of using a clothes dryer, and using the BBQ instead of turning on the oven. Double glassed windows, heat resistant curtains and window tinting can reduce the heat entering your home. The optimal temperature for an air conditioners is 24 degrees - every degree below this increases energy consumption by 5 to 10 percent. Heating water takes a lot of energy so to save money have short cool showers and wait for a full load in the dishwasher. Summer energy bills can quickly escalate if you don’t know the real cost of keeping your house cool, so MLL has published a table showing the costs of running different cooling appliances. Home is a threesome by Nigella Jim and Susie got married but when Susie brought her bouncy dog Mack into the marriage Jim wondered if he had done the right thing. Here's what happened . . .

Jim and Susie often dated. Jim became infatuated. He livened up his boring life by asking Susie to be his wife. "My worldly goods I thee endow Will you marry me right now? I own a house with pool and bar and drive a smart Mercedes car." "My assets dear Jim I'm sharing too." Said Susie as he began to woo. "But all I bring and can endow is clumsy, huge and goes bow-wow." So Susie brings her companion Mack. An inside dog that hates outback. Mack chews Jim’s jocks, throws up food he doesn’t like and Knocks the postman off his bike. Jim wishes he had never wed for Mack now shares their wedding bed! Says Susie, "Mack is sweet and trusting and never means to be disgusting."

By now Jim’s threatening to leave and saying "It’s either HIM or ME!" Jim’s anguish Susie can’t resist. She rings a dog psychiatrist. This bloke demands a whopper cheque. But he’s fixing Mack, so what the heck. And judging from the dog's expression, The shrink diagnoses dog depression. He’s now prescribing numerous pills and sending heaps and heaps of bills. Mack, I must not fail to mention, Laps up all of this attention. These days Jim is all agog. The couple own a model dog. A placid and obedient Mack is zonked out on the drug Prozac. Car colours What does the colour of your car say about you? Does your car’s colour match your personality?

Environmental psychologist Eddie Clarise says that the car you drive suggests some interesting things about you. To see if your car matches your personality check out the list below.

COLOUR WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT YOU... Silver Silver shows you’re cool, calm and confident on the road. Blue Blue is described as the colour of stability and safety, suggesting you may be of caution when driving. Black You’re intimidating to other drivers and the colour brings connotations of power, which might be the reason it is the most popular colour for luxury vehicles. Red You have high energy levels due to your interest in promoting confidence and power into those around you. Grey You’re knowledgeable, have great self-reliance and are happy to go with the flow of life. White You value the need for organisation and hold a high regard for both yourself and your status.
