Max Baldam Portfolio
Portfolio Hi, Max Baldam here. I am a student studying BA product design at Nottingham Trent University. My friends have always refered to me as the “creative one. It was in my a-levels in which I began to realise my passion for creating things, whether this was painting, model making or sketching doodles in my notebooks. Through developing as a designer, I enjoy all its aspects and with my efficiency and organisation it enables me to create high quality designs that are both innovative, and helping to improve our future. Skills - Drawing - Painting - Solidworks - Keyshot - Photoshop - Illustrator - Indesign

Pryzm pendant The Brief
To explore the commercial home-ware market, developing a single or range of products specifically for sheet material manufacturing such as laser, water and plasma cutting.
01
Ideation Interested in the sustainable aspect of my design, I aimed at bringing different materials together to create contrast and bring a contemporary aesthetic. From my sketches I was able to create models. This allowed me to develop the form and to practice with the shadows produced. Givng me valuable insight into the designs progression leading to the final proposal.
Materials
Made from aluminium and pine wood, both of which sustainable. Aluminium is lightweight, and It can be easily bent and moulded into creative forms. It is a great material for reflecting light around a room whilst not becoming too hot to touch. Pine wood is a more natural looking material and gives consumers a better sense of the outdoors. Together aluminium and pine wood add a level of elegance and style to a person’s home.
Max and Hannah Consumer Profile “love of brutalist forms and monumental architecture, and concrete” “designed using the principles of the Golden Section” “The little details are incredible” “The attention to detail and quality of materials”
Context This design is a hanging pendant light sculpture. With a contemporary design, it is used to create the aesthetic of ones living space through the use of contrasting materials and a sculptural aesthetic. The Pryzm Pendant. The main sense of inspiration for the Pryzm Pendant was origami. It gives the design a more sculptural aesthetic through the use of clean folds, Turning 2D into 3D in the simplest yet beautiful way. Providing the design with a very unique and obscure structure.
KitKat Buttons - Nestle The Brief
TOo design a new and immersive multisensory user experience and exclusive KITKAT product for Nestle Chocolatory.
02
Ideation An augmented reality user experience that everyone has access to, with just a few clicks to download the app. Allowing you to fully experience how the kitkat chocolate is made, from the cocoa bean having its first harvest, to it being shipped away to the global market. Inspired by the cocoa bean, is a kitkat chocolate button shaped like the Cocoa Plan logo.
Download – Install the app to start your AR experience
Scan the QR code in store – Locate the QR code in your nearest store
You’re ready to start your AR experience – Find all the AR simulators and ejoy!
My aim was to design a feature and product that link to the cocoa plan and the farmers who which harvest the cocoa. My demographic was identified as Gen Z due to their connection to technology and social media. Gen Z would rather interact with a digital screen instead of talking to actual people. Through the use of the app and the use of AR you are able to experience the farming process with just a few clicks.
KitKat Buttons – KitKat buttons inspired by the Cocoa Plan logo.
Pocket phone The Brief
To design a new and immersive smartphone for the year 2025. That is to be aimed at active/explorers that are seeking enhanced experiences in their day to day lifestyles. “The name ‘backpacker’ is derived from the tendency to carry all clothing and possessions in a backpack.“ What happens if they lose their backpack? Do they have a way to find their possessions? This has a high risk assessment. Indepdant travellers can rely on thier phones for easy access to a gps for directions and keeping connected to friends and favmily. Backpackers are in the risk of theft of their belongings, a new phone to reduce/ stop this risk.

Ideation This project was completed as part of a group colaboration between two of my fellow peers. The process of sketching and modelling enabled me to develop my concpets quickly and efficiently. I attempted to be as innovative as I could with this concept, driving away from the box standard rectangular shaped smart phone.
Travel phone - Expands and retracts for ease of storage and portability - Uses a landyard for safe keep and to stop/detract theft - Minimalistic design with bright colours - Speaker and microphone to help keep connected with friends and family
TANG Lighting Deadgood The Brief
Deadgood would like you to design and develop a pendant light by ’challenging’ the way they are made, used or function to create a sustainable product that has a commercial appeal.
04
Modelling
Concentrating on the form, the production process and sustainability aspects, I was inspired by the chinese lanterns. In commercial environments it has to be versatile and adaptable.
Exploration of fabrics and their asthetics against LED light. I cae to realise glass was a more suitable materials, giving a longer product life.
TANG Light colour range
Material
The body is made from glass, and is coloured through using metalic compounds added to the molten glass at the time of manufacture. Adding different compounds to the glass creates different colours enabling it to be customizable. The top and base come in three options, cork, pine wood or matt grey.
Designed for commerical use, within cocktail bars. However, It is sutable for different locations; cafes, reataurants and offices. The glass body is blow moulded into shape, the colour mixed in before hand. The TANG Light is made by order to redue its environmental impact and allowing for customisability for each one produced. Providing a range of colours and materials available to choose from.
Garden tool storage The Brief
To design a storage product for the garden shed. It needs to have a contemporary aesthetic and be able to hold the general gardeners tools and equipment.
05
Ideation Conducting reserach from the inital brief gave me insight towards my target user; empty nestrers. These are people that have retired and their children have moved out, allowing them to enjoy their hobbies more deeply. Through inital sketches, I started developing ideas from various shapes and forms. I wanted the aesthetic to be minimal. Keeping the materials and manufacturing techniques limited for a cheap and afforadable as well as being a sustainable product.
Gardeners Tool Kit Material and Manufacture
The main body is made of pine wood, a light weight and sustainable material. Attatched is a aluminium hanging rack. This is also very sustainable as it can be re-used multiple times. The material is very versatile and has many applications. Pine is a popular wood, used for both commercial and domestic application. CNC machining is used to manufacture the main body.
Gardeners Storage The design has various uses, my taget being garden storage, however it has the capability to be applied to a range of areas within the domestic household. Not everyone has a garden, some people have indoor plants. These still need maintenance, and an aesthetically stylish, small piece of shelving to hold the tools is the ideal product.
