New office building 37,200 ft2 four-storey HQ for China Shipping UK, one of the world’s largest shipping container companies, located on the port of Felixstowe.
Layout The building is designed The L-shape building comprises two wings of different sizes linked by a circular “drum” on the external corner of the L. This contains The Entrance foyer atrium, meeting rooms, directors offices and the boardroom. The wings accommodate modern open plan office space over three floors. External Materials The facades at the front are fully glazed, with western red cedar brise soleil, while the rear elevations are clad in prepatinated copper.

olar gain control is achieved via a sun screening system of vertical and horizontal timber brise soleil. The solution, while reducing solar gain, allows also the building’s occupiers to enjoy views over the port and offers some protection from the elements.
Vertical
mounted timber louvres 300mm long by 50mm wide, are mounted on the curved entranceway feature, and reinforced with a secondary curved steelwork support system which secure the fins back to the main structure.

orizontal stacked timber fins are also erected on the building southern and eastern elevations at equidistant lengths, and fixed in place using aluminium side plates.

The columns have a “mast” like appearance that take reference to both the local maritime industry and the nature of the end-users shipping business, complementing the nautical theme of the building. Western red cedar was chosen for its natural appearance, its ability to withstand the elements.

New office building 200,000 ft2 three-storey Headquarters for a leading pharmaceutical company, located in Wokingham. Addressing the environmental agenda, the building has been design to achieve a “Very Good” BREEAM rating. Sustainable features include solar shading ; in situ concrete structure providing a high thermal mass; low energy light fitting and a green travel plan. The building is oriented so that office wings fan out towards the south west; this gives the opportunity to create passive solar “suntraps” which forms external recreation and amenity spaces. The new office building is designed to allow maximum views out into the surroundings wooded landscape, whilst giving the occupants good levels of natural daylighting.

The main entrance and reception area are designed to afford views to the south through the internal courtyard and to the woods beyond by introducing full height glazing to the courtyard, with internal circulation around the perimeter, to achieve a “cloistered” feel.

Project Architect for 140 beds Hotel refurbishment including the delivery of the design, production and coordination of information and site supervision to completion.
The Format
The format developed for Howard Johnson Hotel in UK typically
included 120 bedrooms, dedicated business facilities with fully equipped meeting rooms, dining and lounge areas served by bar and kitchen.

Public Areas From the entrance lobby a series of organic and fluid lines link the Magazine Corner to the reception, the bar and the servery counters. A careful use of ceiling detailing and floor finishing help the lounge and dining areas to retain a distinctive identity. Design features such as wall panelling with plasma screens and bespoke high tables contribute in creating a smooth transition between zones.

Defence Technical College, Messes Value: £22M Location: St. Athan, Wales Size: 10,200 sqm Client: Ministry of Defence Involvement: Project architect - Scott Brownrigg
New Officer’s Messes building 10,200 sqm two-storey for the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The Messes building is part of the Defence Technical College (DTC), the largest PPP prorject in the UK to date, which aims to rationalise training Armed Forces. The project is on the core site of the RAF St Athan, and comprises new accommodation for 3,255 bed spaces, classrooms, workshops, museums and offices to serve a population of over 11,000. The Messes are designed to support the ethos of the Tri-Services, they are perceived as one building, but contain four separate Messes, each designed to operate autonomously. The language ensure that there is no external architectural differentiation between the Officers’ and the SNCO’s Messes. There are two main formal front entrances, one into the Officers’ DTC Mess and one into the SNCO’s DTC Mess , each lead to a Rotunda a central space via an imposing stone colonnade. The layout includes Dining Rooms with respective Ante rooms, Lounges, bar, meeting rooms, fitness centre and space for recreational activities.

The Rotundas are the hart and soul of the building from which members have access to all DTA Mess facilities .
