Limited to 1000 copies. Beautifully designed and printed; the first of five books designed by Kohei Sugiura and published by Kazuhiko Motomura under the Yugensha imprint. The lushest of Frank's books, his most important retrospective, and one of the most sought after deluxe editions in the photobook canon. (Parr / Badger, v1, 261; Open Book 286-287; Auer 544). 16. INOUE, Seiryu. Kamagasaki. Tokyo: Shobo, 1985. First Edition. Quarto. Number 97 of 500 numbered copies. Although not called for, this copy has been INSCRIBED by Inoue. Riveting black and white images of the Kamagasaki neighborhood of Osaka, widely regarded as Japan's worst slum. Photographs of drunks and drug addicts, elderly laborers and poor children, prostitutes, homeless, etc., rendered in an objective yet compassionate style that seeks not to exploit, but rather to document. Inoue had a major show in 2008 at Rat Hole Gallery in Tokyo, and parts of this book were reproduced for co-publication with Ichiro Kojima's Tsugaru. Middle signature of the book somewhat awkwardly bound, but not loose in anyway; otherwise a fine copy in plain red and black laminated boards and matching slipcase card slipcase (moderately worn at the spine heel). One of the most important and rare of Moholy-Nagy's publications, and one of the seminal texts not only of his New Vision movement, but indeed the entire history of the prewar European avantgarde. Spine gilt dulled, small almost unnoticeable archival restorations smoothing the top corners and strengthening the binding; a very good to near fine copy, lacking the printed dust jacket.
