Saturday 7 November, 6.30pm to 11pm in the east wing
The Guy Fawkes Celebrations 2009 are set to be some of the most impressive to date with an action-packed evening for all the family Following a spectacular light show, accompanied by the Band of the Honourable Artillery Company, the Chairman of the Club will lead the traditional procession of Guy Fawkes to meet his fiery end on the top of the bonfire. Once the bonfire is ablaze a breathtaking fireworks display will then begin, beautifully soundtracked by some classical and popular music. If you don’t want to stay outside for the whole evening, two discos will also take place in the east wing, allowing the younger members of the Club to ‘get down’ to all the current chart hits and some old classics too. The Napier Servery will be open during the celebrations, as well as BBQs on the Rose Court and Broomhouse Terrace,
offering revellers everything from burgers to salads. Warming glasses of mulled wine will also be on sale to keep that November chill at bay!
Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot Although Guy Fawkes is commonly seen as the instigator of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, the conspiracy was in fact masterminded by Robert Catesby, a leading Roman Catholic of the time. It is thought that Fawkes was placed in charge of executing the plot due to his military and explosives experience, having fought for 10 years for the Spanish Catholics against the Dutch in both Belgium and Holland. In an attempt to oust King James I and assert a Catholic monarch, Fawkes resolved to blow himself up along with Parliament. Unfortunately for Fawkes, the plot was uncovered by the King’s guards and he was seized as he attempted to ignite the powder charge. Having been tortured for four days since his capture, he finally succumbed and revealed the names of his co-conspirators. The conspirators were tried, found guilty and were then taken to Old Palace Yard
The Honourable Artillery Company The Honourable Artillery Company is the oldest surviving regiment in the British Army, and the second most senior in the Territorial Army. It can trace its history as far back as 1296, yet it was not until 1537 that the Regiment was granted a Royal Charter by Henry VIII. The Charter authorised the Overseers of the Fraternity or Guild of St George to establish a perpetual corporation for the defence of the realm, to be known as the Guild of Artillery of Longbows, Crossbows and Handgonnes. This body was known by a variety of names until 1656, when it was first referred to as the Artillery Company. It was first referred to as the Honourable Artillery Company in 1685 and officially received the current name from Queen Victoria in 1860. It is also interesting to note that the Regiment has the rare distinction of having fought on the side of both the Roundheads and Cavaliers during the English Civil War.
Tickets priced £15, increasing to £20 from Friday 30 October, are available from main reception or by calling 020 7736 8411. Subject to availability, ticket sales stop at 6pm on the day of the event and will not be available for purchase on the night, nor may they be left at the gate for collection. Tickets must be worn and be visible at all times. Access to the event is via the main gate and the Broomhouse Lane pedestrian entrance, however re-admission will not be allowed under any circumstances. Except to ticket holders the Club will close at 4pm. The Clubhouse, fitness centre, gym and sports office will will close at 3.30pm (with the last tennis booking available at 2pm) and the indoor pool will close at 3pm. Dress: casual
