From park to Recycling Center By Maximiliano Olivares
RECYCLING PARK Thesis Project/S1-2021
The “Recycling Park” project is born from threshold architectural concept, as a hybrid typology of dialogue between two territories, in response to the environmental needs of the Pedro de Valdivia community located at the south of Chile. The proposal addresses problems of household solid waste, lack of public spaces and neighborhood insecurity from an organic material recycling building, which seeks to consolidate the nature of its limited territory from the products generated from the transformation into biomass, with in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of local life from the care and integration with the environment.

CASA PATAGONIA Mathias Klotz/S1-2021
This marked my initiation into Mathias Klotz’s architecture studio in early 2021, where I was entrusted with my first project. The house was in its conceptual design phase, presenting the challenge of transitioning to Revit for effective coordination with the structural engineer. The primary objective was to ensure that this origami-shaped residence could withstand the relentless Patagonian winds. The distinctive shape of the house emerged from the client’s explicit wish to avoid conventional angles, elevating the complexity of the task. The shift to Revit allowed for meticulous coordination with the mechanical engineer, ensuring the precision and cleanliness of the house’s structure.

PUPPET THEATRE COMPETITION Maximiliano Olivares/S1-2023
The puppet theatre competition in Bulgaria is the only unfinished competition in this portfolio, but it is an interesting piece to showcase as, in my opinion, it reflects my own style. The solution for this proposal clears the first floor for community activities and gatherings. The foyer invites pedestrians through a clear glass transition to its inside, leaving the main theatre room floating as a black box on the second floor. All services and storage are located underground. On the first floor, only the reception, cloth storage, administration, and cafe are present. The entire first floor gets a sense of order thanks to a grid of steel beams that conquer the terrain.

LOS RIOS PUBLIC LIBRARY COMPETITION Mathias Klotz/S2-2021
The “BADe” Library project aims to unleash a linear park that runs along the southern bank of the “Calle Calle” river, acting as a widening of its seafront. The building acts as a mediator between the city and the river, responding to them according to their topographic, use and landscape loS RioS pUBlic liBRaRy conditions. loS RioS pUBlic liBRaRy
The Library is arranged as a linear building remembering the traditional silhouettes of the city of Valdivia, this linear volume directs the main views towards the river, perched on a programmatic plinth. P. 8
For this competition proposal I had the opportunity to be the leader designer. From the planning of the general design idea to the form to the constructive language of the building.

HYPERLOOP CENTER COMPETITION Maximiliano Olivares & Thomas Wanckel/S2-2020
The contest consisted of developing a research center in the Mojave desert, USA, for the scientific and technological development of the future fastest means of transport in the world. The center was thought of as a treasure of knowledge, the first silhouette, from a distance, is a subtle gesture where nature rises like an oasis from the horizon. The project is generated from a hierarchical fissure that provides service to open public spaces, around it, each program is distributed Water distribution separately from each other, continuing the language of the main fissure.

MATHIAS KLOTZ + EDGARDO MINOND
This project was limited in its form by different urban restrictions. As the client wanted two floors, the most efficient solution, which made the best use of the buildable area, was to generate a rectangular first floor covered in brick that would house the common spaces in relation to the patio and also the services, receiving a second floor in the shape of of a dark wooden box that contained the main bedroom and two more secondary bedrooms in a calmer and more peaceful private zone.

HVERFJALL COFFEE SHOP COMPETITION
Maximiliano Olivares, Lucas Knust, Thomas Wanckel/S1-2022
Situated in the middle of nature, the bistro is strongly inspired by the surrounding vastness. By arriving at the site, the coffee shop itself becomes a part of the landscape, seeking to disappear from the arriving visitors and first letting them contemplate the main attraction, the Hverfjall Volcano, to the point that we felt driven to walk to the top first. Finally, walking back down we were able to see the coffee shop inviting us to come inside. Stepping into this Coffee shop was a trip unto itself; the feeling of getting into the earth itself, covered by a giant rock in contrast with a minimal interior decoration of only two volumes, a programmatic bar and a chimney.

CASA EN JOSE IGNACIO Mathias Klotz/S2-2022
Nestled in José Ignacio, Uruguay, a 400m2 residence unfolds through the convergence of three rectangular boxes. The central module invites with the main access and communal spaces, while flanking counterparts cradle the master suite and two bedrooms, all connected by a shared space. Crafted predominantly from laminated timber beams and columns, the structural framework adheres to a meticulous 2m x 2m grid. This intentional design not only ensures stability but also establishes a cohesive language for the intersection, providing a visual harmony.
P. 14
As sunlight bathes José Ignacio, this residence stands as more than a dwelling; it’s a testament to thoughtful design, harmonizing form, function, and the natural beauty enveloping it.

408 FLINDERS LN BUILDING Maximiliano Olivares /S2-2023
The initial concept of the skyscraper proposal involved a strategic exploration of rectangular forms to gauge the building’s feasibility. The resulting design unfolds into two primary volumes: a suspended podium that generously dedicates the ground floor to public space, drawing inspiration from Lina Bo Bardi’s MASP, and a towering pinnacle that seemingly hovers above the podium. This architectural approach prioritizes a thoughtful consideration for pedestrians and occupants alike. The incorporation of rounded corners further imbues the structure with an artistic quality, reminiscent of a stone meticulously shaped by the gentle caress of water.

CCU BEER MUSEUM C/1° PRICE Mathias Klotz & SML Architects /S2-2021
CCU Beer Museum, is an emblematic project that aims to restore and remo-del a building dating from 1883, which will become a beer heritage museum. The construction will house a museum and will allow the gardens, which un-til now were closed, to be opened to a complete community so that everyone can live the experience of getting to know the country’s brewing tradition. The project proposes to establish a structure that rests on the building, intervening as little as possible but thus being able to bring it to life again. The project was a national competition between more than 40 architecture offices, this is the winner

MUSEO REGIONAL DEL NUBLE C/2° PRICE Mathias Klotz & Massmann Architects /S2-2021 Team Architects: Agustin Pimentel, Maximiliano De Lajara, Maximiliano Olivares
The project proposes to build a base along the entire length of the building and two lateral courtyards in order to establish a natural distance that both relates to and programmatically isolates it from its context, creating a series of public, semi-public, and private areas that respond to its requirements and surroundings.

The volumes are restored to their original state, with the only addition being a skylight running the length of the volume to achieve even overhead lighting without altering the original shell of the building.

THE ARK MOON STATION C/MENTION
Maximiliano Olivares, Lucas Knust, Thomas Wanckel/S1-2023
The design philosophy of The Ark revolves around harmoniously embracing the lunar cave while addressing extreme temperatures and ensuring astronaut safety. The primary structure is a cylindrical glass shell suspended by basalt tensile elements connected to structural rings. This not only reinforces the shell but also enhances the aesthetic within the lunar cave throw a layer of nature. The program of The Ark includes a ground floor housing a rover hub, construction area, and local material production facilities, with elevators connecting to the projects interior. The first floor within the glass bubble accommodates machinery, services, storage, and recycling facilities. Above, the garden floor creates a vibrant natural environment. Two levels of floating modules, connected by a tensile structure, house accommodations, control rooms, common areas, cultivation areas, a gym, an infirmary, laboratories, and an observatory.
