As most webmasters know by now, Search Engine Optimization is probably the single most important aspect of running a website. If your site is not optimized for search engines, particularly Google, than you are missing out on hundreds or even thousands of daily unique visits per day. Keeping up with SEO is nearly impossible, with Google changing their algorithms constantly, but until recently things were more cut and dry. Googles main objective throughout the years has been to come up with a formula that is not easily manipulated and allows the better quality pages to rise to the top of a search query in a natural way. Before, things like Google Page Rank, inbound links, title tags, and link structure were the main contributors to Google's algorithm. To this day, those factors still play a key role in where a site will rank in a given search query. However as Google innovates, and seeks to become an even more powerful search engine, they are using all types of new information. Listed below are ways that Google has been presumably using, to improve their search algorithm. #1 What Links are Clicked on the Most? This is a simple concept. The urls which are clicked on by users the most, after a certain search query, should be weighted towards the top. This of course after running the click data through various formulas. How would one optimize a site to take advantage of this variable? Just title your pages with solid keywords that will get the searchers attention. #2 How long does Someone stay at a Particular Website By using data from the Google Toolbar, Google analytics pages, and the new Google Chrome Web browser, Google is able to track how long each person stays at a site which they find in their search results. They can then figure that if a person immediately leaves a page they found, then the result was not a good one, which means they will lower the ranking of that page in the search results. On the other hand, if someone stays at that site for an above average time, they can increase it's rank. How can you take advantage of this variable? Simply make a website that has good information and will keep the users there for a while. #3 Does the Searcher come back to search for the same keyword after clicking on a result? By using the tracking features Google has deployed within the Chrome Browser, Toolbar, and

Analytics, they can tell if a searcher goes back to the results page after clicking a result. Obviously if they go back to the results then the link they clicked on was not what they were looking for, thus they can decrease the rank of that result. On the other hand if the user does not go back to the result page, than the link would get a higher ranking within the results. All in all, the best way to take advantage of the new variables Google is and has been using, is to create good content that people want to find. Google is getting smarter and those webmasters who continue to produce content for people, rather then search engines, will be the ones who see the most gains.
