s the new year arrives it brings with it change, optimism, and a little bit of uncertainty. This is what we celebrate as the calendar flips from 2018 to 2019. It’s a time to reflect on all that has been accomplished over the past year and prepare for the challenges that lay ahead. Here at Maximum Yield, 2018 was a year of challenges, accomplishments, and change. As the grow industry landscape changed as never before, we, too, had to change. We restarted with rebuilding our distribution system so that Maximum Yield was directly distributed via FedEx to hydro stores, ensuring trackable distribution. This allows us to pinpoint exactly how many copies are going out and where they’re going, while maximizing our reach so as many readers as possible can benefit from the helpful information found within the magazine. For a current map of where to find Maximum Yield, check out maximumyield.com. Of course, magazines distributed through our hydro retail partners are still free.

To complement our hydro store distribution, we also entered mainstream retail distribution to engage an even broader audience. In the US, readers can now find Maximum Yield and Maximum Yield Cannabis at Barnes and Noble, our first foray in 21 years onto the newsstand. To make this work, we had to rebrand some of our magazines, so we went to work with sleek new cover designs, improved layout design, and cutting-edge content from some of the industry’s best writers. In modern day publishing, however, print isn’t enough. In 2018 we also upgraded our website, introduced our MY app, and increased our social presence so our articles and products can reach you no matter where you are. We’re not done yet, and we can’t wait to see what 2019 brings. With that said, from the Maximum Yield team to you and yours, we wish you a 2019 filled with joy, happiness, and beautiful gardens.

Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts. This means that enzymes accelerate a wide variety of very particular chemical reactions within living organisms. They represent a major aspect of cellular regulation and function. Almost all metabolic processes including transportation of information and processes within the cytoskeleton of the cell need enzymes in order to maintain function and sustain the life of the organism. Chemically, enzymes are like any catalyst and are not consumed in chemical reactions, nor do they alter a reaction other than through acceleration. Enzymes differ from most other catalysts by being much more specific in their function and reaction. The molecules upon which enzymes may act are called substrates and the enzyme helps convert the substrates into different molecules known as products. Enzyme activity can be affected by other molecules: inhibitors are molecules that decrease enzyme activity, and activators are molecules that increase activity. Check out Eric Hopper’s article on page 40 for more information.

What proportion of plant hormones should we add for chili pepper plants? Thanks, Surya P. Hello Surya, The type of concentration of plant hormones (plant growth regulators) to use on chili pepper plants depends on what process you are trying to control. Plant hormones are not routinely used for the general production of greenhouse and hydroponic chili plants under normal growing conditions as the plant produces sufficient amounts of these for optimal growth, and there is a risk that incorrect application can actually have a negative effect and may even kill or severely harm plants. The main use of plant hormones on chili plants is under adverse growing conditions, such as high or low temperatures where application helps reduce flower drop thus increasing fruit set and yields. Under adverse growing conditions chili crops can have a significant reduction in growth and yields when high daytime temperatures (more than 86°F) coupled with warm nights cause abscission of flowers and poor fruit set which severely restricts yields.

LM

18

Maximum Yield

The application of foliar sprays of the NAA (Naphthaleneacetic acid) auxin can enhance fruit set and yields under these conditions and make the crop more profitable. One study has also found that use of NAA at foliar-applied rates of 20-40 ppm not only improved fruit set, but also increased plant height and the number of primary branches in chili plants. However, other studies show varying responses to applied plant growth regulators, so some experimentation may be required. Other plant growth regulators that may have an effect on chili pepper plants have been reported as being GA3 (Gibberellic acid) at 10 ppm, and triacontanol at 5 ppm, which both had a similar effect to NAA by promoting greater fruit set and resulting yields under adverse environmental conditions. Research Shows Climate Change Intensified Destructive Hurricanes

Some of the nastiest recent hurricanes, including Katrina, Irma, and Maria were made more destructive by climate change, with as much as 10 per cent more rainfall. Research published in the journal Nature showed warming of the atmosphere and Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans increased rainfall by five to 10 per cent, though wind speeds didn’t change much. But the problem will be worse with future global warming. Researchers discovered that if little is done to curb greenhouse gas emissions and the globe warms by 2-3°F, then hurricane rain would increase by a third with wind speeds boosted by as much as 29 miles per hour. “Climate change has exacerbated rainfall and is set to enhance the wind speed,” says Christina Patricola, who undertook the study with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory colleague Michael Wehner. The research used climate models to see how factors such as air and ocean temperatures have influenced hurricanes. Projections were then made, based upon various levels of planetary warming. — guardian.com

Scientists Create Drought-resistant Plants Without Stunting Growth

Researchers have discovered a strategy to create drought-resistant plants without affecting overall plant growth. Ana Caño-Delgado led a team from the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) that published a study in the journal Nature Communications detailing the discovery. Plants were created to resist drought by modifying the signaling of plant steroids called brassinosteroids. Initially these plants had stunted growth, but now Caño-Delgado has learned that plants which overexpress the BRL3 brassinosteroid receptor in the vascular tissue are more resistant to water scarcity than control plants and that, unlike the previously researched mutants, they grow to normal size. “We have discovered that modifying brassinosteroid signaling only locally in the vascular system, we are able to obtain drought resistant plants without affecting their growth,” says Caño-Delgado. The work was done on the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. It’s a small flowering plant found in Eurasia and Africa and is regarded as a weed. — sciencedaily.com

Weed-eating Goats do Pesticide Work in Canadian City

After banning the use of herbicides in public parks, the city of Edmonton has brought in 400 goats to feast on unwanted weeds growing in greenspaces. They feasted on leafy spurge, an invasive species with bunched yellow flowers in Rundle Park. Edmonton banned herbicides and have used goats to keep the weeds at bay. “The fact that we give an environmentally conscious alternative to the use of herbicides, I think that is really something amazing that is about this project,” says Joy Lakhan, goat coordinator with the City of Edmonton. The best part about using goats is they have a special digestive tract that can reduce germination in some plants, plus they can gobble 10 pounds of weeds a day. When they’re young, the goats are trained to target key weed species that can be harmful to other plants and animals. Enzymes in their body can break down parts of plants that could irritate other livestock. — feltonbusinessnews.com

max FACTS New Heat System Turns Human Excrement into Fertilizer

Innovative research from an Israel university has led to a process of using a specialized heating process to convert human excrement into fertilizer. Scientists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel discovered the process known as hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), which address two large challenges faced by developing countries: sanitation and a demand for energy. The HTC system heats raw human excrement in a specially designed “pressure cooker” and the emerging product is hydrochar: a biomass fuel that looks like charcoal. The study, published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, shows how HTC heats raw human excrement to 356°F, 410°F, and 464°F for 30, 60, and 120 minutes. The waste gets dehydrated and turns into hydrochar, which is sterile. Hydrochar can then be made into “coals” for heating and cooking, while the liquid can be used to make fertilizer because it’s rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. — marketbusinessnews.com

California Reigns as World’s Biggest Almond Producer

If you buy almonds, chances are they were grown in California. The Golden State is the largest producer of the tasty drupes and America produces the most in the world. In fact, California is the only place in the US that commercially grows almonds. The state’s harvest is usually enough to feed the nation and export to other countries. The US produces more than two million tons of almonds every year. About 70 per cent of American almonds are exported in shelled form, with the rest sold unshelled (an almond is like a peach but instead of the fruity part becoming fleshy, most of it sizes up in the kernel). The California area is perfect since almonds grow best in a mild climate with plenty of sunshine and fertile soils. Spain (200,000 tons), Iran (147,000 tons), and Morocco (112,000 tons) round out the top global almond-producing nations. — worldatlas.com

Bacterial Resistance to Pesticides and Antibiotics Reaches Planetary Boundary

A report suggests a group of bacteria has passed a planetary boundary (“safe operating space for humanity”) when it comes to resisting antibiotics and pesticides. Research from the journal Nature Sustainability concludes Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella, are resistant to all or most antibiotics tested. Lead researcher Peter Søgaard Jørgensen from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University suggests this type of resistance means societies will face large-scale agricultural and health crises. “It appears as if we have crossed a tipping point for Gram-negative bacteria, with doctors increasingly reporting untreatable infections. We now need to manage these ‘nightmare bacteria’ differently,” says Søgaard Jørgensen. Pesticide resistance is also a major concern, particularly resistance to glyphosate (the core ingredient in Roundup) and insecticidal Bt-toxins in transgenic crops. The research suggests some herbicides and Bt toxins have reached regional boundaries with some farming areas reporting large-scale resistance to these pesticides. — sciencedaily.com 22

Why Washing Lettuce Won’t Remove E. Coli Risk

With the recent E. coli outbreak in the US and Canada, experts warn that washing lettuce won’t remove the potentially deadly bacteria. Even scrubbing the lettuce with baking soda and vinegar will not work. That’s because the bacteria can get trapped in “microscopic crevices,” says James Rogers, director of Food Safety and Research at Consumer Reports. Even pre-washed lettuce that’s been triple washed isn’t safe for consumption. Thinking about cooking your greens? Wilting lettuce can’t guarantee all the bacteria is gone. It takes just 10 E. coli cells for a person to get sick and, by way of comparison, a pinhead can hold 10 billion cells. And organic lettuce doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free from potential contamination. E. coli symptoms include stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Some cases can be lifethreatening. An outbreak in April last year, also from Romaine lettuce, killed five people and infected 210 others across 36 states.

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS ACF-420 is a unique bacterial formula designed to inoculate greenhouse soils and hydroponic mediums, enhancing the biological activity in all of the various media and hydroponics flow systems.

Portland Named Best Foodie City in US

Thanks in part to its abundance of farmers markets and communitysupported agriculture programs, Portland, OR, earned the title of Best Foodie City in a report from personal finance website Wallethub. Finishing second was San Francisco, followed by Miami. “Portland ranked first for several metrics including accessibility and affordability of high-quality restaurants and the lack of sales, food, and restaurant taxes. Portland also has the highest number of food trucks, craft breweries, wine bars, and coffee and tea shops per capita,” says Jill Gonzalez, an analyst with WalletHub. Portland boasts the fifth largest number of food markets and agriculture programs supported by the community. Another factor in the results was the number of employees in agricultural activities. That’s something Gonzalez notes can be improved in many cities. “Local authorities could support agriculture more and maybe even offer incentives to those who wish to go into farming or similar activities,” Gonzalez says.

Grow Light System

The SE 600 is a new grow light system from EYE Hortilux. The system maximizes plant growth for 600W HID lamp applications. Most system reflectors are too large for a 600W lamp and don’t spread the light efficiently. The SE 600, however, was designed with a smaller lamp in mind, so it’s a smaller, more focused reflector. This means all available light produced is directed onto the plant canopy for a uniform distribution of photons.

GREENHOUSE

Optimizing GREENHOUSE CLIMATE

by Monica Mansfield

30

Maximum Yield

When dialing in the climate in your greenhouse, think about Goldilocks. The temperature shouldn’t be too hot or too cold, the air shouldn’t be too moist or too dry, and the air shouldn’t be too stagnant or too breezy. Here’s how to get everything just right.

G

reenhouses are an excellent way to extend your growing season. They allow you to enjoy a warm oasis and eat fresh vegetables throughout the winter. However, if your greenhouse’s climate is not dialed in, you’ll have nothing more than a hot house full of shriveled plants with moisture dripping from the walls. When growing in a greenhouse, you take on Mother Nature’s job of creating the correct temperature, humidity, and air flow. Optimizing the climate in your greenhouse is essential, and there are many options and techniques to help you create this ideal environment.

Temperature

Greenhouses capture heat efficiently, even in the cold winter months. Your goal is to keep the temperature in the proper range for growing. In the summer, you’ll want to maintain your daytime temperature at about 75-85˚F and nighttime temperature at about 60-75˚F. In the winter, keep temperatures between 60-70˚F during the day and as low as 45-50˚F at night. The exact temperatures you maintain depend on the crops you grow and their preferences. Many factors influence the temperature in your greenhouse, including light, outside temperatures, and air flow. Four methods commonly used for cooling your greenhouse are shading, evaporative cooling, fogging systems, and thermal mass reservoirs. While shading is effective at reducing temperature, it also reduces the amount of light reaching your plants by 50-60 per cent, which can inhibit growth rates. Sometimes, however, this trade-off is necessary to ensure your plants’ survival. To create shading, you can purchase shade cloth, paint-on materials, or adhesive compounds that can be applied directly to the glass for a more permanent solution. There are also roll-up screens made of wood, aluminum, vinyl, or plastic that come with pulley and rope systems to allow for adjustment based on light and outside temperature. You can grow trees and plants next to the greenhouse as a source of shade too. You can even grow trees or trellis grapes inside your greenhouse to supply shade to other plants. The large size of the grape leaves have the additional benefit of acting as a natural evaporative cooling system. Maximum Yield

Evaporative cooling systems, also known as swamp coolers, turn hot air into a cool breeze by passing air through a soaked screen, pad, or spray of water. These systems are most effective in environments with low humidity as they add moisture to the air. Fogging and misting systems are also often used to cool greenhouses. These two systems are similar in that they both spray water to cool the air. The main difference being the size of the water droplets. Foggers create a very fine mist, while misters spray larger water droplets. These systems can be put on a controller to spray water when temperatures get too high. While effective, the main drawbacks to these types of systems are excess humidity causing fungal issues within the greenhouse and clogged emitters from water with high mineral content. You can also control temperature by keeping a black reservoir filled with water in your greenhouse. During the day, the water will absorb heat. When it cools down at night, heat is released and warms up the greenhouse. This is the principle of thermal mass at work. You can even put your tank to good use and grow fish while you’re at it. As a rule of thumb, fill your reservoir with two to three gallons of water per square foot of greenhouse space. Finally, if you need to increase temperatures in the winter, you can use heaters or even wood stoves.

Air flow is essential for temperature control and fresh air exchange. Without fresh air, there will not be enough carbon dioxide for photosynthesis unless you install a CO2 generator. Even with a generator, you’ll need fans to move air within the greenhouse to help prevent fungal disease. Vents, exhaust fans, and oscillating fans can be used for fresh air exchange and circulation. You can also install roof vents that need to be opened and closed throughout the day depending on the temperature. Roof vents are often operated by hand, but you can automate them with a thermostat controller to eliminate the manual work. Exhaust fans can also be set on a timer so air is exchanged as often as once per minute. If it is cold outside, you will want to exchange the air less often, about a few times per hour. You can also hook your fans up to a thermostat, so air is exchanged when temperatures start to rise. Mount these fans high on the end walls and make sure they have a protective hood so that rain is not blown into the greenhouse. Ceiling fans or oscillating fans keep air circulating within the greenhouse. This will control humidity levels and strengthen your plants’ stems, just as the wind strengthens plants outdoors. Finally, if you are going low-tech, you can install screened doors on the ends of your greenhouse to create cross-ventilation and prevent stagnant air.

“CONTROLLING YOUR TEMPERATURE WILL ALSO HELP TO MANAGE MOISTURE LEVELS AS HEAT DRIES UP MOISTURE.

Humidity

Humidity levels should be maintained between 70 and 85 per cent. When levels begin reaching 90 per cent and higher, growth slows, fungal diseases start to occur, and early bolting becomes a problem. Keep in mind it can be a challenge to measure humidity levels when air is constantly circulating. Placing multiple hygrometers around your greenhouse can help you get a more accurate reading. If humidity gets too high, you can add a dehumidifier to dry it out. You might also try pruning your plants. Leaves perform a process called transpiration in which they release moisture into the air from pores on their surface, so reducing the foliage should help reduce humidity levels. Proper ventilation and air circulation are also important keys to managing humidity levels in a greenhouse.

34

Maximum Yield

So, open doors or vents to reduce humidity. Controlling your temperature will also help to manage moisture levels as heat dries up moisture. If you live in an arid environment and need to increase humidity, you can do this by spraying the floor with water or installing a misting system. Greenhouses can make a wonderful addition to your garden as long as they are managed properly. When you control your temperature, air circulation, and humidity, you can take advantage of extended growing seasons and eat fresh year-round.

UNDERSTANDING HOW

UPTAKE WATER AND NUTRIENTS by Chris Bond

Roots play an integral part in plant survival, whether it’s as an anchor or providing life-sustaining water and nutrients. Chris Bond explores just how roots do their job to keep plants alive.

m

ost folks know what plant roots are and have a vague notion of some of the basic functions they perform. Of course, roots offer an anchorage system to keep plants in place, they store food for the plant in the forms of sugars, starches, and proteins, and roots send water and nutrients up into the plant. Root systems also play a role in vegetative reproduction in some plants. But not everyone knows just how the root system does these amazing things — all without anyone ever really seeing them in action.

Root Anatomy

There are two primary types of root systems — taproot systems and fibrous root systems. Both serve nearly identical purposes but in different ways. Plants with their respective root systems likely evolved based on the conditions of the native soil where they thrived, or as an adaptation to the types of roots that supported competing plants. Through site-specific evolution and human intervention, it is quite probable that in any typical landscape you will find plants with both kinds of roots growing in proximity to each other.

with their respective root systems likely evolved based on the conditions of the native soil where they thrived, or as an adaptation to the types of roots that supported competing plants.”

In taproot plants, the first root or proto-root that develops from the germinating seed is called the radicle. This type of root system is commonly found on most conifers, dicots, and seedbearing plants. It consists of a predominant root that forms from the radicle and grows downward. Other less dominant root branches will form off this tap root. Monocots primarily develop fibrous root systems, though there are exceptions. Fibrous roots are a dense mat of similarly-sized roots that do not venture as far away from the shoot of the plant. The radicle in monocots does not stick around for long; the first root that develops and holds the seed in place is aborted and replaced by others shortly thereafter, starting the process of developing the robust stitchwork of the fibrous root system. To peel back a further layer of roots and how they work, let’s start at the bottom. The end or tip of the root (on a taproot) is protected by a structure called the root cap. The root cap is a mass of hardened cells that are the tip of the spear, driving the root downward, protecting the layers behind it. Think of it as the nose of a space shuttle that can take the brunt of the resistance upon re-entry into the atmosphere.

37

Behind the root cap is the cortex, which makes up the bulk of the rest of the root. The cortex is loosely packed with cells and empty space, both of which store water and allow it to flow into the xylem vessels, sending water and dissolved nutrients to the above-ground shoot systems. Roots lack openings such as the stomata found in leaves. Rather, roots are covered in thin-walled cells, known as parenchyma cells, which act as a water-absorbing membrane. These are primarily found in the cortex of the root. This entire outer wall of the cortex is known as the epiblema and the main conduit for this transport at the center of the cortex is known as the endodermis. Unlike the rest of the cortex, the cells in the endodermis are more tightly arranged so water does not escape back into the cortex but can be sent on its merry way upwards through passage cells. However, this does not happen until the water and nutrients have passed the root system’s smell test. To that end, the endodermis is a plant guardian. If the plant has inadvertently absorbed any toxic material, the endodermis filters it out and rejects it. A waxy barrier known as the Casparian strip is the gatekeeper at play here. Proteins within the cells allow for the good compounds and molecules to pass, while toxins are weeded out and removed. Root hairs are an extension of the endodermis. These fine, long, and narrow projections grow out from mature roots, helping increase a root system’s ability to absorb moisture and nutrients by increasing the root system’s surface area, which increases contact between roots and soil. The stele, pericycle, conjunctive tissue, and vascular bundles round out some of the lineup that make up the typical root. If you really, really want to know more about the intricate functions of roots, or have a severe case of insomnia, look up “histogen theory” and/or “Quiescent Center.” For our purposes here, these go way beyond the realm of useful knowledge for the layman horticulturist, this author included.

once

inside the roots or root cells, water and dissolved nutrients travel through different root pathways in one of two ways — either symplastic movement or apoplastic movement.” The Secret World of Roots

Root systems are a network of connected botanical appendages whose entire mass can sometimes dwarf the aboveground portion of the plant it is supporting. It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to feed and care for all the flowers, fruits, and leaves getting most of the accolades. They don’t, however, work alone. The root (mostly below ground) and shoot (mostly above ground) systems work in unison in a positive feedback loop. Though an oversimplification of the process, it’s safe to say the photosynthesis work the leaves and greens do sends nutrients below to the root system, which is then able to expand and grow, sending more food and water upward so more leaves can be produced. Then more photosynthesis can occur, and more roots can develop and so on. Roots are constantly attracting and transporting water and dissolved nutrients from the medium they are in. Deep down in the root cells, a pressure builds. This root pressure creates a siphon-like action which forces water and nutrients up into the above-ground portions of the plant while water and nutrients from the surrounding soil are drawn into the root. This is due to the higher concentration of nutrients and minerals inside the root cells than in the soil environment around the root system. In addition to this force, moisture from the soil is continually being absorbed into the roots by the negative water potential within the root cells.

as 85 per cent of plants may owe all or some of their nutrient uptake capacity to mycorrhizae.”

Symplastic vs Apoplastic Movement of Water and Nutrients in Roots

Once inside the roots or root cells, water and dissolved nutrients travel through different root pathways in one of two ways — either symplastic movement or apoplastic movement. Most water and nutrients move through the roots via apoplastic movement. When this happens, water does not actually enter the cells, but travels through the passages between cells. Think of this as a hallway connecting bedrooms. This is easier than traveling by symplasticity. With symplastic movement, water and nutrients must cross over a cell membrane to enter into the cytoplasm, a gelatinous material inside the cell. Water and nutrients must then travel upwards by moving through the cell walls. Think of this as gaining access to bedrooms through the adjoining walls instead of taking the hallway.

Mycorrhizae: Roots’ Fungal Friend

Worthy of inclusion, though not a component of root anatomy or function proper, is mycorrhizae. This lauded beneficial fungus attaches itself to plant roots in a symbiotic embrace that can exponentially increase the reach of any particular root system. As many as 85 per cent of plants may owe all or some of their nutrient uptake capacity to mycorrhizae. The fungus not only gets fed while attaching itself to root systems, but acts as a force multiplier by increasing the reach of plant roots and the surface area of the root system. The hyphae, or tentacles of the fungus, are much smaller than even the root hairs and can therefore mine into much smaller crevices in search of nutrients. In addition to the basic and more complex functions described earlier, roots also serve to aerate the soil they are anchored in and can pull the plant closer to the dirt for protection from the elements. All of these and more are functions of roots in the care and feeding of the shoots.

To recap the process of water and nutrient uptake, we can reduce it to four basic steps: • Step 1: Water and dissolved nutrients enter the roots through the root hairs by the process of osmosis or root force. • Step 2: Water and dissolved nutrients then cross over the root cortex either through symplastic or apoplastic movements. • Step 3: Water and dissolved nutrients enter the xylem. • Step 4: Water and dissolved nutrients are sent up into the plant stem in the transpiration stream to deliver needed nutrition to all the shoots of the plant. These processes will go on so long as the plant is alive, and water and nutrients can be found in the soil. Periods of drought will slow down these actions and, in some cases, encourage root growth as plants seek deeper sources of water and nutrition. Maximum Yield

enzymes IN THE GARDEN Enzymes play a major role in plant health as they can increase nutrient uptake and help protect roots from pathogens. Eric Hopper explains why these tiny catalysts work so well in the garden.

A

catalyst is defined as a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing any permanent chemical change itself. One group of catalysts is found in every garden and provides countless benefits to plants. These catalysts are enzymes. Enzymes are highly selective catalysts made up of amino acids, proteins, or RNA (ribonucleic acid). Enzymes are biological molecules responsible for numerous chemical reactions which help to sustain all life. They differ from other catalysts in their selective nature as enzymes only react with their specific, predetermined substrate. The role an enzyme plays in these reactions is unique because the enzyme itself is not responsible for the reaction, but rather, the speed at which it occurs. Essentially, enzymes become a biological regulatory system for many of the chemical reactions that affect plant life and are an important connection between minerals, microbes, and biological creatures.

40

Maximum Yield

Enzyme Reactions are Specific

Much like a puzzle piece, enzymes take on a certain shape to ensure only particular reactions will occur. The place on the enzyme where the reaction occurs is called the active site. This active site is like a keyhole and will only bind to a specific mineral or substrate that fits perfectly. The enzyme remains unchanged throughout the entire reaction process. After the reaction has occurred and the resulting chemical reactions have taken place, the enzyme is ready for a new reaction.

Increasing the Rate of Reactions

Like other catalysts, enzymes can increase the rate of chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy required for the given reaction. In other words, the presence of enzymes is what makes particle reaction happen at a faster rate. This is one of the reasons why enzyme formulas and products that indirectly add enzymes to a grow medium have become so popular among horticulturists. By supplementing specific enzymes or microorganisms that produce enzymes, horticulturists ensure they are maximizing the rate at which nutrient absorption can occur while helping protect the plants from pathogens.

Temperature and pH Effect on Enzymes

It is the enzymes released by mycorrhizae that help make some of the hard-to-capture nutrients — such as organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron — available.”

Enzymes, and the microorganisms that produce them, do not do well in extreme temperature conditions. Extremely hot or cold conditions will have a negative effect on enzymes and microorganisms. Many prepackaged soils are inoculated with beneficial microorganisms in the hopes they will produce the enzymes needed to accelerate chemical reactions in the soil. However, when a soil is shipped or stored in hot or cold conditions, the microorganism population can be negatively affected, thus adversely affecting their ability to produce beneficial enzymes. Some soil manufacturers have rectified this by adding moisture protectants in prepackaged soils to preserve the valuable microorganisms and the enzymes they produce. The pH of a soil or medium has little effect on the enzymes themselves as they can withstand a wide pH range. However, the pH of a soil or medium will limit a plant’s ability to uptake particular nutrients. Although the enzymes will still be able to carry out their functions, the plant itself may not be able to reap the rewards because of a pH range falling outside the range for nutrient absorption.

Supplementing Enzymes in the Garden

A horticulturist can supplement enzymes into a garden either directly or indirectly. There are specific enzyme formulas containing isolate enzymes. These are an example of direct enzyme supplementation. In some cases, an enzyme formula is comprised of a single isolated enzyme or a combination of multiple enzymes. Most of the isolated enzyme formulations are targeted at a plant’s root zone and aid in breaking down dead root matter while reducing the likelihood of pathogens, such as root rot. Maximum Yield

Beneficial Microorganisms Provide Enzymes

42

Maximum Yield

An example of indirect enzyme supplementation is the use of beneficial microorganisms. Supplementing beneficial microorganisms into a medium or nutrient solution will indirectly increase the number of enzymes since the beneficial microorganisms produce the enzymes. Mycorrhizae are very popular beneficial microorganisms to be supplemented in a garden. The enzymes (including some hydrolytic enzymes) produced by mycorrhizae fungi are what makes them such assets to their synergistic plant partner. It is the enzymes released by mycorrhizae that help make some of the hard-to-capture nutrients — such as organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron — available. Trichoderma is another beneficial microorganism supplemented by horticulturists. As with mycorrhizae, the benefits derived are directly linked to the specific enzymes released. The enzymes released by trichoderma are called chitinase enzymes and their main role is to break down chitin. Chitin is the main component of fungal cell walls, which means the enzymes created by trichoderma can help protect a plant from pathogenic fungi. In fact, it is the chitinase enzymes produced by trichoderma that are responsible for trichoderma’s reputation in warding off pathogens. When pathogenic fungi exist in the soil, trichoderma will increase chitinase production, which, in turn, will attack the pathogen. Many indoor horticulturists are adding trichoderma as extra insurance against root-borne pathogens. Trichoderma also produces cellulase enzymes, which break down cellulose. Cellulase enzymes can add another level of protection for plants. The cellulase enzymes can penetrate the cells in the plant’s root system, instantly triggering the plant’s natural defenses and stimulating the plant’s metabolism. No real harm is done to the plant and the heightened response helps protect the plant from other pathogens. Whether a horticulturist supplements an isolated enzyme formula or the microorganisms producing the enzymes, the benefits of enzymes in the garden are undeniable. Considering nutrient uptake is dependent on multiple chemical reactions in the soil, and enzymes are the catalyst to increase the rate of those reactions, it is no wonder so many growers are relying on enzyme supplementation. As more is discovered about enzymes and how they can assist gardeners, the horticultural industry is sure to see even more enzymespecific additives, fertilizers, and pest control products emerge in the future.

Combining Sunlight & Grow Lights:

Supplemental Greenhouse Lighting

O

nce considered two distinct schools of thought in horticulture, the line between indoor and outdoor cultivation is being blurred. Highly sophisticated, year-round greenhouses are at the forefront of this fusion movement as they utilize the best practices of both methodologies in a creative give and take. These operations utilize the sun’s energy to power essential plant functions while implementing indoor growing technologies like light sensors, blackout tarp systems, dehumidifiers, and industrial heaters to mimic indoor environmental controls in outdoor settings. Perhaps the most vital technological application in these modern-day greenhouses is that of supplemental lighting. In indoor gardening, lighting is one of the most important factors dictating the outcome of a harvest. However, it is also one of the costliest elements of an operation, with an overhead of at least $400 per unit for 1,000W double-ended high pressure sodium (HPS) lights and $800 per unit for comparable light emitting diodes (LEDs). Taken to a commercial scale, this overhead can prove quite intimidating as it is solely up to these artificial light sources to feed every square inch of a massive garden canopy. Then there is the astronomical cost of running the lights in these large-scale set-ups. Some 10,000-square-foot warehouse grows have reported power bills to the tune of $12,000 monthly.

However, modern greenhouses use best practices from both indoor and outdoor cultivation. When it comes to lighting, this means employing a careful balance of sunlight and supplemental light. It’s revolutionizing the way in which people grow crops outdoors. To give us some expert insight into supplemental lighting applications for greenhouses, Maximum Yield reached out to Brendan Strath, senior solutions director and grow ninja for Spectrum King LED, a company that makes fullspectrum LED grow lights. Here is what Strath had to say.

How important has supplemental lighting become in greenhouse cultivation and what are its primary benefits? Supplemental greenhouse lighting is now an essential part of outdoor farming. It allows growers to keep crop production going on short winter days and bad weather days by providing a consistent light source in the greenhouse. Production costs are greatly reduced by combining sunlight with supplemental lighting. Each light is not on full-power all day (when sunlight is at its strongest) and greenhouse lighting grids generally spread lights out more than with indoor growing. As such, lights run less, and they cover a greater square footage, greatly reducing costs per square foot of canopy.

Modern greenhouses use best practices from both indoor and outdoor cultivation.”

What would you say is the biggest benefit of supplemental lighting in greenhouse growing? For me, the use of supplemental lighting in greenhouse growing has its largest impact concerning carbon footprints.

By keeping production costs down through greenhouse growing, we can offer fresher and healthier food and medicine.”

Using the greatest light source in the world (the sun) for the heavy lifting and just supplementing a few hours a day when sunlight intensity is low is a much greener way of producing crops than with straight indoor growing. Also, with this method, you can produce quality crops all year round with lower production costs.

Is the use of supplemental lighting more prominent with growers in certain regions of the United States than others? If so, why? That’s a great question and one that is often overlooked. Yes, at first-glance some regions are better suited for greenhouse growing than others. Any geographies with extreme weather conditions (a.k.a. cold, wind, snow, etc.) are perfect for greenhouses; they offer environmental protections for crops while utilizing sunlight. Grows in those regions without consistent sun also benefit the most from supplemental lighting. However, with a little thought and ingenuity, you can do well with greenhouse cultivation just about anywhere on Earth.

Many see automated greenhouse growing as the “future of the industry” because it utilizes controlled environment agriculture with the added perk of sunlight. What are your thoughts on this? I couldn’t agree more with that statement. Whether it’s medical crops or food production, people want healthier choices that are also cost effective. By keeping production costs down through greenhouse growing, we can offer fresher and healthier food and medicine. To me, that’s an obvious no-brainer.

46

Maximum Yield

Modern greenhouse cultivation with the bonus of supplemental lighting truly diversifies horticultural applications outdoors. Plus, as Strath mentioned, this form of growing is also economically viable and more environmentally friendly. With this sort of best practice, technological advancements have allowed greenhouse growers to devise cultivation methods that can realistically sustain the industry well into the future. Finally, novice and expert growers alike can use supplemental lighting to produce fresh medicines and crops all year round.

Hard or Soft:

KNOW YOUR GARDEN

WATER

o you know what type of water is flowing through your house and D hose spigot? If you don’t, it’s easy to

figure out. Next time you take a shower, pay attention to how your skin feels afterwards. Do you feel slippery, or do you feel squeaky? If you feel slippery, then you have soft water. If you feel squeaky, then you have hard water. Does hard or soft water make a difference to your garden plants? As part of a plant’s holy trinity – water, sun, soil – you need to know what kind of water you are using. If you have been having a tough time getting anything to grow in your garden and have checked your soil and sun, then the problem could be your water. But what is the difference between hard water and soft water?

HARD WATER No, hard water doesn’t mean it’s mixed with alcohol. Hard water is comprised of dissolved minerals – the majority of which are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and lime. Unless you have a water softening system, hard water (to varying degrees of hardness) is the standard type that flows through public and private systems. Once again, there is an easy way to tell if you have hard water. If, over time, white/pink scum builds up on your household fixtures (sinks, bathtubs, toilets, etc.), then you have hard water. Those buildups are caused by the minerals slowly collecting. However, that does not mean hard water is bad for you or your garden.

Soft water is treated, or softened, with sodium which removes the minerals. That’s why your skin feels slippery after showering with soft water and why glassware looks cleaner after washing with it. The minerals that build up on your skin have been removed, so there’s nothing to wipe off. To remove the minerals, water is treated with sodium in a system usually set up somewhere within your residence. Soft water systems are often installed in areas where there is a high amount of minerals in the water that may affect the plumbing, or simply because some people prefer the taste and feel of soft water over hard water. It may not leave buildup or residue on your fixtures and skin, but that does not mean soft water is good for your garden.

PROS AND CONS FOR GARDENING The simple answer: Treated soft water has little to offer your garden except plant-killing sodium. Although only trace amounts of sodium are present in soft water, it can build up over time in the soil. After enough builds up, the sodium causes your plants to die of thirst. If you are worried this is the case now, you should leach your soil. This is done by watering thoroughly and frequently, which basically washes away the sodium buildup. However, you’ll also be washing away some nutrients and minerals that are vital to your garden’s nourishment.

If you leach your soil, make sure you replace the mineral/nutrient content afterwards with an additive or fertilizer. Hard water provides your garden with useful mineral content and doesn’t have the excess sodium of treated soft water. Calcium and Magnesium are vital to a plant’s growth but can be harmful in large doses. Too much can cause chlorosis – a yellowing of the leaves which is a symptom of sickness. To prevent sickness like chlorosis, use a raised garden bed that provides better drainage. Excess minerals will leach from the soil naturally, be rebalanced with the minerals in your hard water, and your garden will be much happier.

Hard water provides your “ garden with useful mineral content and doesn’t have the excess sodium of treated soft water.”

WHICH SHOULD I USE FOR MY GARDEN? This is a trick question because the best option for your garden isn’t hard water or soft water, but rain water. Rain water, while technically soft water, lacks the sodium of treated water and won’t lead to that excess mineral build-up hard water can bring. Rain water is friendly to plants and, conveniently, can be collected in rain barrels for use in your garden. If you don’t want to collect and use rain water, the next best option for your garden is hard water.

LIGHT LEAKS AND SEALED GROWROOMS

hen planning and setting up indoor gardens, growers spend time and money in the creation of environments where plant species thrive. For sealed growrooms, this process represents a careful balancing act between temperature, humidity, light, and CO2. However, once an indoor grow is operational, these synthetic environments create challenges for growers that are non-existent in the natural world. The reaction of indoor plants to light leaks during dark periods (nighttime) presents one of these unusual phenomena.

Grow Books “For the avid grower, these books are indispensable.” GARDEN CULTURE

MAMAPUBLISHING.COM

Certain species of plants are subject to photoperiodism, in which the varying duration of light cycles between day and night cause plants to enter new phases of growth. To illustrate, uninterrupted 12-hour periods of darkness (nighttime) causes some plant species to start flowering. This process occurs when a hormone called photochrome reacts to sunlight intensity and durations, directing plants towards the different phases of growth.

“It’s a good idea for cultivators to regularly check their growrooms to make sure they are

100 PER CENT

DARK DURING THE NIGHTTIME PERIOD.”

If a sealed growroom is not 100 per cent dark during the nighttime period, photoperiodism cycles can be interrupted, causing photochrome imbalances as related to specific plant processes. These hormonal imbalances can have negative and sometimes detrimental effects on an indoor harvest. For those looking to avoid issues with light leaks in their sealed growrooms, consider the following points:

Inconsistencies and Stress

Indoor gardeners should always strive for consistency in their growroom environments. Most crops perform best in stable environments, and bountiful harvests are the result of constant environmental balance — including stable lighting intervals — during both vegetative growth and flowering. A common misconception amongst indoor growers is that light leaks during the vegetative growth phase won’t disrupt crop growth. However, any irregularities in lighting patterns can stress plants out. Along this line of thought, all environmental stressors inhibit essential plant functions, such as nutrient uptake, and retard growth. Light leaks can also prove troublesome regarding photochrome levels in plants, as unexpected or irregular doses of light can alter stable hormonal conversion processes. During flowering phases, excess light during dark periods can push photochrome activity to the point of converting a plant back into vegetative growth.

Hermaphrodites

One of the most widely known negative side effects of growroom light seepage has to do with the transformation of female plants into hermaphrodites. For those looking to grow seed-free flowering plant varietals, hermaphrodites can prove devastating for a crop. This is because male flowers on a single plant can pollinate an entire growroom and greatly devalue a harvest.

52

Maximum Yield

Expert horticulturists agree that certain plant species turn hermaphrodite as a result of environmental stressors, and light leaks are notorious for being associated with this phenomenon. However, it should be noted that the occasional beam of light on a garden from a headlamp won’t cause plants to “herm.” While indoor growers should strive to avoid any disruptions in regular light cycles, it takes rather consistent light exposure to force a plant into hermaphrodite growth. These sorts of leaks come from constant sources, such as under doorways and walls, that occur on a daily basis.

Light Leaks Mean Other Leaks

Indoor growers can be assured that if their sealed growroom is leaking light, it has issues with other leaks. Seasoned cultivators go to great lengths to ensure that their sealed gardens are functioning at their best when it comes to atmosphere, temperature, and sterility. All these contingencies are compromised with an improperly sealed growroom. If leakage issues arise, growers sacrifice the total environmental control that is so essential in sealed room growing. With this issue comes potential problems with maintaining ideal, static levels of temperature, humidity, and CO2. Moreover, as sealed rooms are wholly dependent upon CO2 injection technology, the regular loss of CO2 to leaks is financially burdensome and operationally threatening. If light leaks can penetrate the confines of a sealed garden, so can airborne pathogens. As such, it is virtually impossible to fully sterilize an indoor grow if bugs and spores (of powdery mildew and botrytis) can continuously access the grow space via leaks.

Locating Light Leaks

Many indoor growers don’t know that their rooms have light leaks until it is too late, and the problem expresses itself by way of hermaphrodites and seeded flowers. As a result, it’s a good idea for cultivators to regularly check their growrooms to make sure they are 100 per cent dark during the nighttime period. To inspect an indoor garden for light leaks, it’s best to enter the grow with a green light when the primary lights are off. Once situated in the garden, turn off the green light and sit still for a while to let your eyes adjust to the blackness. At this point, it should be easy to canvass the walls and ceilings of the room and discern any potential points of light leak trouble. Also, this inspection process should be done during various parts of the day, as different angles of sunlight outside can cause light leaks during isolated time frames. Gardeners should also be advised that control panels on grow equipment, such as atmospheric controllers and AC units, often give off light. This light is usually red or green and is residual from the digital readout. As such, it is recommended that growers cover up these light sources with electrical tape or some sort of removable opaque material.

“Most crops

PERFORM BEST IN STABLE ENVIRONMENTS.”

Compared to any other form of controlled environment agriculture, sealed-room growing provides the most mastery over environmental factors. However, these growrooms present novel challenges of their own, as seen with the issues surrounding light leaks. For the conscientious gardener, regular inspections of one’s garden should alleviate any light leak problems. All things considered, this knowledge will provide a better platform for troubleshooting on the macrolevel moving forward.

can be programmed to mix up to 20 different fertilizer feeding regiments, simultaneously, for a single garden. The ease-of-use for smart irrigation controllers is tied to both their technological perks and practical applications. Generally, controls are the most beneficial for outdoor ER S cultivators as relating to timing and consistency, they can be set on digital timers or light sensors for automated irrigation on a daily basis. As many plant species thrive on consistent watering and environments, the precision of controllers makes them a serious value-add for outdoor commercial operations. Also, many controllers feature “cloud-based capabilities,” in which a grower can monitor and change irrigation and nutrient levels from their smart phones or computers. As such — and if implemented correctly, outdoor soil growers can alter irrigation practices from afar — this perk is particularly notable concerning changing weather and temperature patterns. All things considered, controllers can add efficiency and stability in outdoor gardening practices that are notorious for getting off schedule due to human error. It’s worth noting outdoor growers must be diligent in taking care of controllers, as sun, dirt, and dust can easily damage these somewhat fragile pieces of technology. Controllers should be well-mounted in a protected, low-traffic area, ideally within a metal or wooden box.

in transitioning an outdoor soil garden from a hand watering or drip system to a smart irrigation program.”

Controllers

Advancements in digital control technology for controlled environment agriculture have made controllers, or “brains,” an essential tool in modern gardening, both indoors and outdoors. For indoor growing, controllers have taken the thinking process out of mundane, yet easy to forget, chores like setting lighting timers and regulating temperatures. Similarly, for tech savvy outdoor growers, the fluidity and easeof-use of these smart-products is too tough to resist. While most smart indoor garden technology sets forth to regulate ambient environments, automated systems for outdoor growing focus solely on irrigation. Controllers are the essential element in transitioning an outdoor soil garden from a hand watering or drip system to a smart irrigation program. Utilizing cutting-edge computer technology in conjunction with touch screen displays, controllers send precisely dictated electronic signals to components in the physical figurations of irrigation infrastructures (see next section). With electronic integration, these smart controls regulate valves relating to both nutrient and water dispersal in the macro-irrigation system. The more sophisticated of these controllers

Fertigation Injectors

For both indoor and outdoor growers, fertigation injection systems have become a staple of ease and efficiency. Traditionally, water-based fertilization processes have been hinged on the labor-intensive practice of manually mixing nutrients in reservoirs or holding tanks. For commercial sized operations, this demanding and tedious chore often involves the mixing of thousands of gallons of water at a time, multiple times a day. However, with some ingenuity and careful planning, the engineers behind fertigation injectors have developed a product which nearly eliminates the painstaking chore of hand mixing water-soluble fertilizers.

As discussed in the previous section, smart controllers can be implemented in conjunction with fertigation injectors, creating a highly efficient and precise system for outdoor soil irrigation. In layman’s terms, the controller dictates the operations of several pressurized valve systems that are fed from separate containers of nutrients. The controller also regulates water pressure from the primary water source. When the irrigation process begins, water flows through a pipe that is integrated with the nutrient valve system, then the fertigation injector releases nutrients into the water flow in conjunction with specific levels of water pressure. When operating and balanced correctly, the fertigation and controller combination delivers precisely measured, nutrientrich water into soil containers — with little human effort. For good reason, outdoor commercial cultivators have come to cherish the ease-of-use of fertigation injectors. For outdoor growers committed to a six- to seven-month growing season, automation options like fertigation literally eliminate hundreds of hours of unnecessary labor in manual nutrient mixing. The precision of fertigation is entirely unmatched by human effort; top-ofthe-line injectors disperse carefully controlled amounts of nutrients down to five milliliters per injection For economically and environmentally conscious cultivators, the precision afforded by fertigation injectors brings significant savings on both water and fertilizer use compared to traditional hand-mixing methods. Because hand mixing nutrients in large reservoirs always leads to an excess of leftover water that generally cannot be reused — this problem is non-existent with the strict controls of fertigation.

Drip Systems

While drip watering components don’t necessarily fall into the automation category, they are an essential element in any smart irrigation plan for the outdoors, especially concerning organic growing. With that, the controller and fertigation injector combination feed nutrient-rich water through hoses or pipes, and finally into soft-plastic tubes that should be embedded deep in the soil of each garden container. Since outdoor growing containers are generally far larger in size than their indoor counterparts (Smart Pots can range up to 1,000 gallons in size), top drip systems work inefficiently for outdoor growing. Concentrated drips of water in such large containers leave a clear majority the soil unirrigated, leading to several serious problems. Therefore, to effectively deliver water and nutrients, automated outdoor irrigation systems must utilize long lengths of perforated irrigation tubing that is coiled around inside the soil-filled container. With this method, fertilization will be accomplished in a uniform fashion, and organic soils will retain the requisite moisture content to maintain the integrity of their biological communities.

In utilizing some of the automation perks from indoor gardening, and adding some necessary tweaks, outdoor cultivators can enjoy the benefits of cutting-edge irrigation technology. For commercial-sized operations, the benefits of smart equipment like controllers and fertigation injectors far outweigh financial costs. Looking forward, one can only assume outdoor growers will continue to combine their passions for soil growing with the modern gardening technologies, making for a practice that utilizes the best of both worlds.

you never promised me aN by Becky Evans

While home (and garden) ownership these days is unattainable for many, it doesn’t mean apartment dwellers can’t reap some gardening rewards. Becky Evans explains how to create an indoor herb garden that will satisfy your green thumb and complement your meals.

L

et’s face it. A lot of people these days live in apartments, and the dream of owning a house with a garden is only attainable for the lucky few. However, with some clever interior design tricks, you can create a garden space within your kitchen and reap the benefits of fresh, healthy herbs grown in the comfort of your apartment.

Choose an Optimal Location

The obvious location for your indoor herb garden is on the inside window sill. So long as you can nourish your herbs with a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight daily, this is the best option. Getting this essential sunlight can be easier said than done, and apartments on lower floors might struggle to get enough light. If you are lucky enough to get direct sunlight, don’t forget to turn your herb pots every three days so they grow evenly. If you can’t find enough natural light for your plants to flourish, you will need to consider a grow light, which can be purchased online or at a garden center. Place the lamp beside your herbs to give them between four to six hours of light a day.

Three Essential Herbs to Plant

You want a variety of herbs that will add a special touch to meals that you regularly cook, and you want herbs that look impressive too.

“You can create a garden space within your kitchen and reap the b e n e f i t s o f f r e s h , H e a lt h y h e r b s . ” BASIL—No self-respecting herb garden can grow proud without basil. This sweet-tasting, popular herb has an anise, clove-esque aroma. Use it fresh or dried in a wide selection of different meals, from a classic Bolognese to a tasty accompaniment with a salmon dish. Basil comes jam-packed with vitamins A, K, and C, as well as magnesium, iron, and calcium. CHIVE—Similar to onions and garlic, growing chives can ward off insect pests like mosquitos from your herb garden. What’s more, chives are full of bacteria-fighting antibiotics from their high sulfur content. Chives also are a natural anti-inflammatory; they’re nature’s ibuprofen. CORIANDER—Regarded as an essential in any herb garden, coriander (also commonly known as cilantro) punches above its weight. It is high in vitamin C and can aid digestion, relieve inflammation, and balance blood sugar levels. Its potent flavor and smell makes a perfect seasoning for meats, salsas, and oriental dishes. Also, coriander seeds add warmth and spice to chicken, vegetables, and soups.

Choose and Prepare Pots

It is essential that you get pots that can drain well. Start by filling your pot with a potting mix, leaving a half inch of soil between the top of the pot and the potting mix. You can find a lot of funky vintage pots online or you could upcycle some old furniture. Once you have your pots, you can plant your herb seeds and water them thoroughly. Allow them to drain until they stop dripping, then place the pots on the windowsill with a tray underneath to catch any last drips of water.

Kitchen Garden Maintenance

Herbs are a sensitive bunch and they will need tender loving care to survive. A snip here and a prune there is essential for a bigger harvest and sturdier herbs. Remember to cut any new growth a minimum of once per week and when new stems grow out. Turn your pots at regular intervals, especially if they are directly in front of a sunny window. This will make sure that they grow evenly and prevents the side in the shade from undue neglect. Of the most important things to remember, watering is a priority. Place small gravel in a tray and put your herb pots on the tray. Fill the tray up to the top with water once per week. Your herbs will absorb what they need from the bottom of the pots.

Keep an eye on your herb garden. In time, you will notice when your herbs are dehydrated or need more light as they change color and appearance. Once they are thriving, you can take pride in cutting a few herbs from your windowsill to complement your favorite meals.

POWDER TO THE PEOPLE VEG+BLOOM nutrient product line, created by Hydroponic Research and distributed by Solstice Garden Supply. San Diego, CA • 8 years in business • 1-800-975-6860 • vegbloom.com Photos by Fox & Nug

is the most advanced, and economical hydroponic nutrient formula available. Quality nutrient production is the most important goal at the Hydroponic Research laboratory. Using proprietary micronizing and homogenizing equipment, all of the elements are refined to micron sizes that permit them to dissolve completely and cleanly into hydroponic systems. These elements are then combined into a pure formula that is consistent from batch to batch — nothing leaves the facility without being tested for consistency, purity, and effectiveness. The finished product is a high-quality comprehensive nutrient that meets the demands of your garden. The VEG+BLOOM team answered our questions.

Sharing it and demonstrating it among other hydroponic gardeners, the formula reached a stage of maturity in 2011 and became available to interested buyers. Realizing that there is still room for growth in hydroponic gardening, Hydroponic Research continues to innovate and experiment with new hydroponic solutions in their San Diego laboratories.

SOLSTICE GARDEN SUPPLY:

In 2014, Zack Vondrak (formerly of Aptus, Advanced) met Larose at a meeting in San Diego and realized the potential for a comprehensive powder nutrient line. He asked Patrick Kanzler (the former GM of Humboldt Wholesale, a.k.a. House and Garden) to help him with the venture. After testing the nutrient line personally, Kanzler recognized the revolutionary technology present in the formulas. With their combined experience in sales, marketing, and distribution, they made the perfect team to bring VEG+BLOOM to market on a large scale.

Being a grower and thinking like a grower,

I CREATED PRODUCTS OUT OF NECESSITY.”

How did you get into this industry? HYDROPONIC RESEARCH:

Growing up in Escondido, CA in a humble home that sat on a plot of highly fertile land, (Hydroponic Research founder) Christopher Larose began developing an interest in agriculture at a young age. His father taught him how to care for a variety of plants such as peppers, oranges, peaches, tomatoes, lettuce, roses, avocados, pears, and kiwis. As a young adult, he became fascinated with botany and soil chemistry and began experimenting with hydroponic gardening, absorbing as much information as possible from interactions with other hydroponic farmers, books, and other resources. Frustrated by the absence of an all-phase hydroponic nutrient that could provide all necessary nutrients throughout the life cycle of a plant, he set out to generate an easy-to-use, yet powerful formula that complemented both tap water and reverse osmosis (RO) water sources. Encouraged by growers who were astounded by the performance of his formula, Larose finally decided to make his premium hydroponic nutrient and outstanding solution available to hydroponic farmers throughout the United States. In 2010, he set up a laboratory and warehouse space in San Diego and began conducting experiments to perfect Hydroponic Research’s VEG+BLOOM formula.

What were the start-up years like? HYDROPONIC RESEARCH:

Hard. Being a grower and thinking like a grower, I created products out of necessity. I needed simple and complete — less guessing and more growing. It was easy to overlook that store owners selling liquids were less interested in one product not require multiple things to work.

What were some of your struggles as you started the business? How did you overcome them?

From being nobody in this industry and becoming somebody. It was a unique obstacle. Scaling up and learning to be a manufacturer and what is required to refine a product and maintain consistency. I had to develop relationships ranging from pharmaceutical suppliers, food ingredient distributors, and industrial engineers. It was a lot of work. Many companies are formed from capitalist concerns. We were able to grow as a company from the need to develop tools we use ourselves.

WE HAVE THE BEST SALES REPS IN THE INDUSTRY.

We hand-picked them and waited for the right guys to join us.”

How did you gain market share and recognition?

We gained market share in the early days by sharing it with growers and discussing the formula on forums and with local growers. As independent thinkers discovered our products, we developed a cult following. This became the seed that grew into our present-day customer base.

SOLSTICE GARDEN SUPPLY:

In 2015 it was really tough to bring a relatively new nutrient line to market. We approached our contacts at many stores to help us launch but we were met with indifference. No one wanted a product they hadn’t heard of and customers didn’t ask for. While the industry relationships are still valuable, we understood that we needed to create a demand for the product first. Only then would stores choose to stock the line.

64

Maximum Yield

We came up with an innovative strategy for 2015. We would openly market toward cannabis growers. We recognized the growing popularity of Instagram among growers and started posting pictures of cannabis grown with the product. We leveraged the existing cult following and began co-branding with growers. At that time, growers were only starting to think about branding and marketing themselves. We worked together in a symbiotic way to promote these talented guys and also the VEG+BLOOM line. Convincing people to give up their liquid nutrients was difficult. But when they could see photos of respected growers producing top quality flowers, it was impossible to ignore. Once we overcame the question of “Does it work?,” the product started moving. With the incredible price point of a powder, all inclusive, one-part base nutrient, growers could no longer ignore it.

What did you first produce? Small-batch powder fertilizers

How has your company expanded over the years? HYDROPONIC RESEARCH:

We started off in a small, cold brick building in downtown San Diego without a sink. Constantly fighting the city for permits to occupy multiple warehouse spaces. Doing everything solo to having two shifts of employees covering different processes. Creating and developing operating procedures where there is no blueprint. Seeing all that work get recognized and appreciated.

HYDROPONIC RESEARCH CONTINUES TO INNOVATE

Where do you distribute?

What are your company’s strengths?

In 2015 we started working from our cell phones and home offices. Soon we hired our first employee and moved into a trailer in Zack’s backyard, then a small warehouse in San Diego that we quickly outgrew. We are still in San Diego just a few blocks from Hydroponic Research. We can walk between offices for meetings and we save a lot on inbound freight.

Worldwide.

What is your current product line?

• One Part Base: DIRTY, HD, RO/SOFT, and TAP HARD. • Two part Base for Fertigation systems: DOS A and B. • Additives: SHINE (bloom stimulant), +LIFE (probiotics), PUSH (Calcium Silicate and Kelp foliar spray), and STACKSWELL (cal mag with added technology).

How many people now work for the company?

We have 20+ employees combined between the companies.

We have the best sales reps in the industry. We handpicked them and waited for the right guys to join us. Also, our support staff is on top of it. Our sister-team office staff makes sure everything is done right and our warehouse crew (all awesome musicians) work hard everyday to ensure orders get out on time.

Roots in the industry, amazing easy to use products, attention to detail, customer service, passion, and we’re always striving to be better.

What are some of your proudest moments?

Making our first-ever sale to a store and growers using our products winning cups.

ten FACTS ON

THE GOLGI APPARATUS by Philip McIntosh

You can’t tell much about it by its name, other than a person named Golgi (pronounced gol-gee) had something to do with it.” FIRST REPORTED in 1898 by Italian physician and biologist Camillo Golgi, this organelle is important in processing proteins into their final configuration and in sending them to their destinations. THE GOLGI apparatus is also called the Golgi body, Golgi complex, or just Golgi. THE GOLGI receives vesicles budded off from

the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). These vesicles contain proteins requiring further processing before they become active.

THE GOLGI is a “central delivery station.” Proteins sent there from the ER are modified, repackaged, and delivered to where they are needed inside the cell.

PROTEINS DESTINED for a role outside of the cell are packaged into vesicles by the Golgi, which then sends them to fuse with the cell membrane to be excreted. THE GOLGI apparatus is found only in Eukaryotes — organisms whose cells contain nuclei, such as those of plants, animals, fungi, and protists.

ALTHOUGH THE Golgi is a large and distinctive organelle, it took the application of the electron microscope before it was accepted as a legitimate and distinct subcellular structure. IN APPEARANCE, the Golgi resembles a series of flattened pancake-shaped vesicles, usually located near the nucleus, not far from the ER.

THE INDIVIDUAL small membranous sacs that

make up the Golgi are called cisternae or dictyosomes.

IN PLANTS, the Golgi apparatus also plays a

major role in production of polysaccharides destined for incorporation into the cell wall.
