Guide To Public Art

Columbia's many sculptures are an outdoor museum that is accessible to all with endless hours of availability and no admission fee. Whether through abstract or historical representation, Columbia's many outdoor sculptures tell stories, commemorate ideals and convey feelings. While the works were initiated by a range of businesses, organizations and agencies, they share the common view that art enriches our city. For a free brochure that details a self-guided walking or driving tour of more than 25 publicly accessible works in Columbia, contact the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, 573-874-6386, oca@GoColumbiaMo.com.

COLUMBIA HAS NO SHORTAGE OF VISUAL ART OPPORTUNITIES

w

Cheryl Toh - Melt Into The Sea

ith a variety of galleries and museums, residents and visitors alike will find plenty to see and much to buy. Expect to see an array of art at Columbia galleries and museums, including photography, ceramics, fiber, sculpture, jewelry, glass, metal and more-made by local and regional artists, as well as those from around the nation and the world.

Retail galleries sell the works displayed while museums do not, though museums often have gift shops on site with unique arts-oriented items for sale. Offerings at all locations change regularly, so visit often. When you do, think about what’s on your walls at home and at work. Displaying original art gives a space character and distinguishes it in a way that other items cannot. Images courtesy Bluestem Missouri Crafts, Poppy and PS:Gallery.

While experiencing various forms of art, this is an opportunity for the public to see the scope of what the arts in Columbia truly have to offer. Each participating venue features a unique artistic event. Types of events may include a painter working on a canvas, a potter spinning, a caricaturist, an artist lecturer, a storyteller, a poetry reading or other performing visual artists. A morning tour, including the 1892, partially restored Boone home and seminars tell the story of our musical legacy. Hot Summer Nights Music Festival with Maestro Kirk Trevor & the Missouri Symphony Orchestra

June - July, 2009 Every June & July, professional classical Missouri Theatre Symphony Orchestra musicians come from around the world & across the U.S. to perform in the Missouri Symphony Orchestra's Hot Summer Nights Music Festival in downtown Columbia. For more than thirty-nine years, the Missouri Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has performed primarily in Columbia's historic Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts, a spectacular 1928 vaudeville/movie palace. Established by Hugo Vianello and under the current direction of Maestro Kirk Trevor, the MSO kicks off the Hot Summer Nights Music Festival in early June. With more than 23 performances during the months of June and July, the Hot Summer Nights Music Festival offers its Classical and Pop Series concerts on weekend evenings at the beautiful Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts (MTCA). The Family Concert Series features every kids favorite, "Molto the Magical Maestro." The eightweek festival also includes chamber music recitals, special events, outreach programs, and tours throughout the state. The MSO has performed with numerous distinguished artists, and has been heralded by the Kansas City Star as an ensemble that performs with "energy and élan, as well as secure technique." As the weather turns colder, shopkeepers throughout The District begin planning for the annual Living Windows Festival. On the first Friday in December, from 6-8pm, shopkeepers move all the merchandise out of their front windows and stage live holiday performances for onlookers. As the rest of us begin our holiday shopping they’re concentrating on sewing costumes, building sets, writing scripts and baking cookies for customers. Merchants go to great lengths to outdo one another- making each year’s displays even more impressive than before. The night itself is a celebration of the holidays.

The District features open houses, strolling carolers, holiday treats, and visits with Santa, all against a backdrop of holiday lights. The District is your place for unique and stylish shopping. It’s the place to go for exciting nightlife or to meet friends for dinner. It’s a lively mix of historic architecture, sidewalk cafes and street musicians. Discover what you’ve been missing.
