Getting Oriented.

Distances For travel up and down the coast in Southwest Florida, locals typically take 41 (Tamiami Trail) or I-75. Which one is fastest depends on your destination and the time of year. Unfortunately, local public transportation is not great. So, for longer distances, travel by car is about the only way.

Getting Right to it.

Let’s Hit the Beach! Nokomis Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Southwest Florida, yet it remains largely unknown to most tourists, and even to many residents of surrounding communities. Swim in designated swim zones, or venture off and walk for miles. Or just relax and search for prehistoric fossilized shark’s teeth. Enjoy one of the only beaches in Florida without a single high-rise looming behind it. Though relatively quiet, Nokomis Beach is well-maintained and has lifeguards, showers, restrooms and a concession stand.

Getting to Know the Area.

A Bite and a Drink on the Water If you’ve just arrived and want to get a feel for the area, grabbing a bite and a drink on the waterfront is hard to beat. While there are plenty of good restaurants and bars in the area, I’ve put together this map of solely those local establishments which offer a view of either the Gulf of Mexico or of the Intercoastal Waterway. Note that most restaurants in this area stop serving by 9:30 or 10 PM. So if it’s late, call ahead to make sure you can be seated.

I also highly recommend keeping it simple and cheap! Grab some beverages from the refrigerator, put them in the cooler bag, and zip down to Nokomis beach for what is typically a spectacular sunset. If you need more supplies, there is a convenience store on Albee Road, about 1/3 of a mile east of the beach (see map on Beach Page). And yes! Alcohol is permitted on Sarasota county beaches as long as it is not in any sort of glass container.
