Social Absorption On April 3rd, 1973 Martin Cooper, Motorola executive, made the first mobile telephone call and then on June 29th, 2007 Apple Inc. released the first IPhone. Today there are over 1.9 billion smart phone users in the world and there are more Google searches done on phones than are done on computers. Social Absorption is a visual representation of societies cell phone obsession and the distraction they create from the outside world. This series is composed of eight juxtapositions that have my photos in the background with an iPhone screen shot placed over it. The photos I have chosen for the backgrounds are simple everyday scenes that are a combination of color and form, which I find the most attractive. Even though they are quite mundane moments, each one gives me inspiration that I can carry into another art form. Just like the simple moments that I have captured I’m also drawn to social media and the Internet like so many others. Being an IPhone user I’m constantly engulfed by its abilities and the overwhelming amount of visual stimuli it offers. I use my phone to find design and photo inspiration, but at the same time this advanced technology, that puts the world at my fingertips, is distracting me from the inspiration that is all around. With Social Absorption I wanted to create something that exaggerated the idea of smart phones taking away our ability to notice the subtle nuances that surround us.
