Welcome to the first issue of Black Mountain Golf Clubs official publication. We hope that you enjoy reading all the information inside. It has been a long road since the owners found the vacant land at the back of the Hua Hin area, however, it’s amazing how much we have achieved in such a short time.

In just eighteen months, after the start of the project in October 2005, Black Mountain Golf Club was constructed and opened its doors. An amazing achievement in itself.
However, by producing this magazine we are not only promoting Black Mountain Golf Club we feel a responsibility to also let the world know of the beautiful golfers paradise of Hua Hin and the magic of living in and holidaying in Thailand.
Since the opening in April 2007, we have been honoured with several awards including “Best New Golf Course in Thailand” in 2007 and in 2008, “2nd Best Golf Course in Thailand” as well as “6th Best Golf Course in Asia”, something that we are extremely proud of. We have also never closed our doors
In recent times, the world’s economy has taken a downward turn, however, our properties at Black Mountain Golf Club remain popular and in demand due to their quality build, design and magnificent location. We anticipate this trend to continue over the coming years.

Orient The lure
For centuries, travellers have been making the journey from far away lands to view and immerse themselves in the magical wonders that Asia has to offer. In recent times, travellers have flocked to Thailand in droves and with the booming tourism industry came a popular expat resident society. With Hua Hin, one of the most popular beachside resort towns in the country, many foreign residents are making this beautiful part of Thailand their home.

Thailand is a very diverse country with mountain regions in the north, a huge bustling capital city of Bangkok and magical coastlines and islands strewn along the southern shores. This variety also brings a wide range of people with varied backgrounds, religions and beliefs as well as lifestyles. Travelling through the country can be an eye opening time and one of the most joyous experiences of ones life. With Thailand’s capital of Bangkok being positioned conveniently in the region and its airports, now ranking in the top 20 busiest in the world, those residents interested in exploring or simply needing to fly for business reasons will find easy access to air travel to just about anywhere. Local travel throughout the country is well established and pretty much pain free. Many airlines cover most of the routes as well as bus, train and taxi’s for shorter distances being inexpensive and easy. In towns, taxi’s, tuk-tuks and even rick-shaws are avail-

able with motorbike taxi’s being very popular with locals although maybe a little dangerous on busy roads. Most town transportation should be negotiated up-front. Thailand is universally know as “The Land of Smiles” and justifiably so. Throughout the kingdom foreigners are greeted with the customary smiles, Thai Wai and “Sawedee” (Hello). In most towns, the local people will have some English language skills, however, the further from these towns and cities one travels it becomes more difficult to make conversation. Learning some Thai language is a must and the basics are quite easy to pick up.
Hua Hin
Many foreigners who chose to live in Thailand search for the perfect coastal town to make their home. With its sandy beaches and many facilities, Hua Hin is becoming the first choice for many of those residents. Location The resort town of Hua Hin is positioned on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and around 200 kilometers south of the Bangkok capital. The town has been a popular destination for many of Thailands residents for many years and is even home to the country’s extremely popular Royal Family. A large proportion of the community is formed by Bangkok residents purchasing homes and making regular weekend getaways. Eventually, those residents retire to Hua Hin for a quieter life. Climate Being close to the Equator, Thailand can boast a year round warm climate. Temperatures are often around 25-30 degrees. During the months of October through

to April, Hua Hin enjoys a very enjoyable temperature with humidity at some of the countries lowest. In terms of rainfall during the “rainy” season, Hua Hin seems to only receive frequent heavy showers that makes playing golf a daily possibility. We have never closed our doors due to weather conditions. Shopping Throughout Thailand, just about anything can be bought from local markets. Fresh produce is readily available at very competitive prices. For those that like the large branded supermarkets, Hua Hin has a Tesco-Lotus store as well as the recently opened Hua Hin Market Village which is an air conditioned, multi-store shopping mall where days can be spent roaming around all the stores. This center opened in 2006 and is the towns first large scale shopping and entertainment complex and has grown in popularity amongst residents and visitors. The three major outlets in Market Village are Tesco-Lotus, Home Pro and Major Cineplex, it also has a food court for inexpensive local dishes, a number of branded restaurants, a ten-pin bowling alley and large variety of small stores with popular clothing brands such as Levis, Lee, Lacoste, Bata, Body Glove and many more. Other facilities in the center are banks, mobile phone outlets, camera stores and book shops. Hospitals Health is a concern for many foreign residents. Hua Hin has two major hospitals including one private international hospital with international standards. However, for serious concerns, Bangkok with its large choice of good medical facilities is only a short trip away.

Schools Residents with kids will be pleased to know that many schools and universities have been established in and around the region. Parents usually seek out schools with quality Native English speaking teachers and the schools themselves have been scrambling to meet the demand. Foreign residents and the desire of Thai parents to have their children study on a full English program offering all lessons in English have created a demand in Hua Hin for schools offering international curriculums. Currently Somtawin Hua Hin School offers a full English program with all subjects taught in the English language, except Thai language of course. Three other schools in Hua Hin have limited English programs. They are Hua Hin Salesian School, Hua Hin School, and Hua Hin Vitayalai. All three schools follow the Thai curriculum with the subjects Science, Math and
English taught in the English language by native speaking teachers with international standard qualifications that are the equivalent of any school system. Entertainment Some of the best dining establishments in all of Thailand can be found in Hua Hin. With the town being so popular in the tourism high-season, these fine restaurants are scrambling for the business and having to increase customer satisfaction to keep up. For a night on the town, the city center has a multitude of bars, pubs and eateries that will be happy to serve. The increase in residents has caused a huge increase in the demand for golf courses. Black Mountain is now the 7th high standard course with the best reputation for quality of play, affordability and luxury appointments throughout the clubhouse and golf course facilities.

Back in October 2005, while on vacation, some Swedish investors discovered a quiet site positioned just 15 minutes west of the center of Hua Hin. 18 months later Black Mountain Golf Club opened its doors. This site was complete with huge valleys, surrounded by jutting mountains with large black rocks protruding from their face and so the name Black Mountain was developed and the concept of the Black Mountain Golf Course was born. Construction began with the digging of three huge lakes that are the foundation of todays course using 80 excavators, 200 trucks and over 400 construction workers to complete the task. These lakes, once constructed, were filled with 3-million cubic meters of water and with the largest being 17 meters deep today provides for all water usage on the course, club house and courseside homes. On any given day at Black Mountain, the water usage is the
equivalant of 160,000 litres. It is considered that the two largest challenges in running a golf course in this part of the world are: 1) to secure enough water (self sufficiency) during the very long period without any rain known as the dry season and; 2) to be able to drain the course when the heavy rains come, which is known as the rainy season. Sometimes the rain can be heavy but usually lasts for only a short time. For Black Mountain to master these challenges, the constructors installed the worlds most technically advanced irrigation and drainage system.

After parking your car in the underground parking lot, golfers are greeted with big smiles and welcomes from the courses well trained caddies who are only too happy to whisk off your clubs in preparation for your round. After taking the private elevator up to ground level, one is bombarded with a spacious clubhouse, equal to anything the golfing world has to offer. The ultramodern, yet tropical Asian styled, dĂŠcor is luxurious in its appointment and pleasing to the eye.

Upon entering the pro-shop, one could be excused for thinking that this might be a private country club in the USA, with the well layed out gallery of products on offer. Surprisingly, the prices for goods are extremely reasonable and compare with retail outlets throughout the country. For those on vacation, a large range of rental clubs and gear are available with such brands as Cobra and Titleist making the golfing experience at Black Mountain first class. The spacious restaurant overlooks the course’s spectacular scene and wets the appetite of those golfers who are not bristling with excitement at their impending round. Delicious coffee, snacks and cold drinks served by more smiling staff help to prepare the body for the rigours of golf or maybe ward off a few nerves at playing such a special course. No expense has been spared in this club house with the locker rooms more like a 5-star hotels. After changing into golfing attire, one can book in for a post round massage or recuperate with a bubbly jacuzzi. Don’t be afraid of hotel pricing as massages here are as little as 300 Thai baht.

For those serious about their golf, Black Mountain has provided a work out room to warm up those muscles. This room is fitted out with a top modern golf simulator where you can try the black mountain layout before you even tee off and a variety of exercise equipment as well so there is no excuse for injuries out on the course. Just a short stroll from the warm up room and the 1st tee is the course’s driving range. This upmarket range is perfectly suitable for a warm up hit, some much needed practice or a private lesson. The club offers lessons at reasonable rates and must be booked in advance. After making way to the first tee, golfers will find their smiling caddie waiting in earnest and ready to please. Remember to take advantage of their course knowledge and know that they wouldn’t think of letting you drive the buggy, that’s their job.

Hole 1 Par - 4
A testing opening hole that is normally played into the wind and can be deceptively difficult when windy. Accuracy off the tee is important with bushes left and right as well as two fairway bunkers around the landing zone. The 2nd shot is downhill to a large undulating green that is protected by a very large bunker to the left. An attractive hole to start your round on.

Hole 2 Par - 5
A spectacular classic “risk and reward” par 5. The tee shot is played from an elevated tee, over a large tress, to a narrow fairway. The 2nd shot is where the choice must be made – either risk going for the green, with a creek in front and rocks surronding the green, or lay up for a wedge shot to the green. A good chance for a birdie if played well.

A downhill tee shot to a generous hidden fairway. The second shot is where the test begins. After a good drive, an accurate short iron shot is required to land on the island green that is also well protected by bunkers. Accuracy is the key as always on an island green. The undulations on the large green will also test your putting skills.

A very testing uphill par 4. with any par here accepted gratefullly. You must avoid the bunkers with the tee shot and take an extra club with the second shot to hit the wide but shallow green. Don’t be decieved by the looks of this straight running hole, as it can be quite difficlut.

Hole 6 Par - 5
Played from an elevated tee set back into the hill, the par 5 sixth hole is downhill all the way and plays much shorter than the yardage indicates. For the second shot, the longer hitter has to decide whether to cut over the water, trees and sand and go for the green or take the safe route to the right. The safe way leaves a difficult short iron to a sloping green but can be a smarter choice on a windy day or with a shorter hitter.

Probably the most dangerous tee shot on the course. The decision has to be made whether to cut over the lake and make the hole much shorter or take the safe route to the left which leaves a very long, tough second shot to a large relatively flat green that is protected by bunkers to the left and back right. Think hard and choose well off the tee.

A long, tough par 4 with a slightly uphill tee shot. The second shot will be a long iron to a green that is well protected by water and sand to the left and a swale to the right. Fairway bunkers to the right of the landing zone makes an accurate drive important.

A par 4 dog leg left, where the decision is how much to bite off with the tee shot. A safe drive to the right leaves a short iron to the undulating green. A good birdie chance on the tenth, before some of the tougher holes of the course make low scoring more difficult.

Possibly one of the most attractive holes on the course, the eleventh is a dangerous little par 3, with water guarding the green to the right and over the back. A hole where you should always aim for the centre of the green and be content with a par when you can make it.

This hole also playes longer than the yardage indicates. The tee shot is to a generous fairway but the second shot is where the challenge lies. You must take one extra club and avoid the deep bunker to the right and the swale to the left of the green.

The best birdie chance on the golf course. The thirteenth plays dowmhill all the way and the drive is to a generous fairway. The danger with the second shot is the water hazards that pinch in to the fairway about 60 yards short of the green.

The most testing par 3 on the course, especially when played from the tiger tee to the back left pin position. The hole is played over a large lake and the green is protected by large bunkers. Aim for the heart of the green and be happy with a par.

The most difficult hole at Black Mountain Golf Club. Played uphill to a fairway with a creek running along the left hand side. The second shot plays longer than it looks, to a narrow well protectoed green. Don´t be upset with a bogey on this hole.

A spectacular tee shot from an elevated tee with a hidden green behind trees to the left. The back tee requires a carry of 250 yards over a creek with the hillside on the left. If you can survive your drive, the second shot is straight forward to a green guarded by a huge rock on the left.

The seventeenth is a classic “risk and reward� hole. Long hitters can go for the green, but it requires a long carry over a creek. The safe option is to lay up onto the fairway, that is protected on three sides by a creek and then play a short iron to the green. If played properly, this hole is a good birdie chance.

A long uphill par 5 where a par is always a good score. The tee shot is to a large and open fairway. If you can avoid the fairway bunkers with the second shot, the challenge begins with the approach. The green is guarded by deep bunkers at the front and right which will catch any misjudged third shot. Settle for a par every time on this hole.

THE SET UP
HALFWAY BACK
Stand up tall and bend from the hips to create a distinct spine angle.
By the time my left arm reaches the horizontal, I expect to see a full wrist cock ‘setting’ the club up on its end. The shaft bisects my right shoulder, which confirms my swing is on a good plane.
MOVE-AWAY

Clubhead outside the hands, but inside the ball-to-target line.
A good swing can be regarded as a chainreaction, with one good move leading on to another. Hence the importance of getting off to a good start. The key is that the arms, hands and the club work together to trace a natural path away from the ball. Looking from this angle (above), the clubhead can be seen to remain just outside the hands (even though it is travelling inside the ball-totarget line) the first few feet it moves back. This is what you should be looking for. You don’t ever want the club to get too ‘deep’ and too far inside the ball-to-target line too early. page 54
When I video my swing, the one position I look at most closely is here, at the halfwayback or ‘9 o’clock position’. Specifically, by the time my left arm is horizontal with the ground, I like to see my wrists fully ‘loaded’ and (looking down-the-line) I want to see my hands right here, in the middle of my chest (i.e. not too ‘deep’ or inside the line, and not outside my body). If you compare it with the original shaft angle at address, you can see that the process of setting the wrists causes the shaft to steepen fractionally as the club swings up. This is perfectly OK, as it encourages the desired shallowing of the plane on the way back down. So why not simplify your backswing, using this 9 o’clock position as your key checkpoint. As you develop the technique to set the clubshaft at a 90-degree angle to your left arm, so you will enjoy the powerful sensation of being ‘loaded’ up as you complete your turn to the top - energy you can then release in the downswing.

If you can achieve this fully ‘set’ halfway-back position, turning against the resistance of your right knee and thigh...
AT THE TOP ...completing a full shoulder turn rewards you with a compact and ‘loaded’ backswing position.
Feel the resistance from the ground up... Looking at this sequence face-on, you get some idea of the resistance in the lower body specifically the right knee and thigh. That’s the feeling I have; I am turning and coiling against the resistance in the right knee and thigh, winding my torso and co-ordinating my arm-swing. Obviously, a secure footing is vital; the one thing I am very aware of is anchoring the right foot as I turn and shift my weight both against and into my right side. Good footwork is the often overlooked element of a good swing, so as you work on winding up your backswing, pay attention to the role of the right foot in anchoring the right side, so that you create the necessary resistance. As I rotate my upper body away from the target, my weight is absorbed up the inside of my right thigh. In other words, my weight is not allowed to roll onto the outside of the right foot. Thats a power leak - so don’t allow it to happen! Coil up against a braced right thigh; feel and use that resistance.

The Baseball Drill Probably the best way to explain the sensation and illustrate the move I am looking for through the transition, at the start of the downswing, is to show you the baseball drill (right). Holding a club up at about waist height, swing back as if making a baseball action, and then ‘settle’ your lower body as you change direction; you want to get this ‘squat’ look in the legs as you start back down and your weight shifts back across to the left side. Get the hang of this move and you will create a wonderful sense of ‘lag’ as your upper body recoils in response to this lower body action.
Hold a club at waist height, and then turn your shoulders to create a swing.
As if by instinct, the arms shallow the plane of the swing and you’re all plugged in for a powerful acceleration of speed through the impact area. And that’s exactly what you are looking to achieve in the swing itself, as you see in the sequence below. From the top, I wait for the subtle move in the feet and knees, unwinding from the ground up as my left foot and left knee signal the reverse in momentum. The left knee (in fact the whole left side) is - for a split-second - pulling away from the right hip (and whole right side). That dynamic move increases the torque in my swing.
Compact backswing (this with a 6-iron); a full shoulder turn with a three-quarter armswing is ideal.
Always looking to improve the ‘lines’ of my swing I have worked hard this year on improving the ‘lines’ of my swing. We all have individual tendencies to be wary of, and mine is sometimes to get the club working too ‘deep’ behind my body on the backswing, to the extent it ends up across the line at the top. Now that it’s on a much better line, I am able to focus on the dynamics of my body action to maximise eneregy. At my best, I feel that I am able to benefit from the energy I store up in the full ‘setting’ of the wrists going back; through the transition I feel the ground through my feet and have the confidence to unwind aggressively through the ball. Greg Norman has always been fascinated with aircraft. Recently, Sean Harrison, asked Greg about his passion for aviation. Have you been fascinated with aviation since childhood? Yes. My love of aviation goes back to my childhood in Australia, when jets and the thought of becoming a pilot obsessed me. I assembled dozens of model airplanes and had them tethered all over my room, and at night I’d lie in my bed and imagine my future as a fighter pilot. I tried collecting stamps and had a few other hobbies, but it was flight, especially fighter jets, that really fascinated me. What age were you when you learned to fly? I first started to fly in my early 30’s, typically flying in the left seat of the helicopter or the right seat of the business jet I was operating at the time. Did you ever have the ambition to become a pilot, rather than a golf professional? When I was younger, I remember going to local air shows when I lived in Townsville, Australia, and admiring the skill of the pilots who flew the F111’s. Later, at Townsville Grammar School, I joined the air cadets with the idea that eventually I’d become a pilot for the Royal Australian Air Force. I was just enamored with flying and I wanted to do Mach-1 with 60 million dollar jets sitting underneath the seat of my pants. At the end of the day I decided not to do that, went off for about 18 months, and decided just to play golf. That is where I am today. One of your first endorsements in 1976 was with Qantas. Do you still use them? Given that I have owned my own aircraft for the past fifteen years, you might think that my Qantas relationship would have dissolved, but the company continues to utilise me, more as a spokesperson for Australia than for the airline itself. In fact, I recently flew from Sydney to Los Angeles on Qantas and the experience could not have been better, from the service to the pilots to the flight attendants. When did you purchase your first jet and did you lease aircraft previous that? Originally I leased planes to fly from event to event, but then a blown engine during a flight in 1990 forced me to make an emergency landing in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Let me tell you, there were some harrowing moments before we touched down, and I decided right then to buy my own plane.

Is the Helicopter used more for the course design? L ike my G550, my Bell 407 is a business tool. I utilize it more for short haul trips within the state of Florida. It is used for a mix of Golf Course Design, trips to Orlando for sessions with my coach and other business activities in Florida such as the Merrill Lynch Shootout, my PGA Tour event in Naples, Florida, the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, etc.
o you fly the Helicopter D yourself most of the time?
Yes, I fly my helicopter, but never solo, always with my senior flight officer in the right seat. What plane do you now own/ use and do you use it mostly for pleasure or travelling to your Golf Course Design projects? The Gulfstream G-550 I have now is the seventh jet I’ve owned in the last fifteen years. I travel about forty weeks a year. Because of the intense schedule I keep, I could not possibly accomplish what I do without my jet. It is a vital business tool that allows me to further develop Great White Shark Enterprises. Do you have players at tour events hitching a ride? In the early days, I was one of perhaps only a handful of golfers that operated their own aircraft, and subsequently, yes, I had a lot of players hitching rides from tour stop to tour stop, which I was all too happy to accommodate. Today, with both the fractional jet programs and the increasing purses on the Tour, you see more golfers operating their own aircraft, and as such, it is not as prevalent today. How many crew do you have in your flight team? I now have a full-time flight department operating both my Gulfstream and my Bell 407 helicopter. I have two pilots, an engineer and two other pilots on standby for my long haul trips. My plane does 6,500 nautical miles nonstop, so when I go on global trips, Florida to

Australia for example, I station a pilot at the first stop. He would travel two days ahead of time. We stop for fuel then keep going straight through to Australia, about 2224 hours of flying, which is a drain on anyone’s body, the pilots’ and my own. You are spending a lot of time travelling to Dubai now with your new designs there. How do you see golf in Dubai developing now? I have been a regular visitor to Dubai for nearly two decades, and my company has been closely monitoring the city for a number of years. The scope of development and the speed at which projects are completed is truly remarkable. Dubai has an entrepreneurial edge and its geographical position places it right at the heart of international commerce. A combination of a progressive approach to business and an excellent location means that golf is bound to thrive and I’ve been fortunate to be involved in the development of Jumeirah Golf Estates which, on completion, will be one of the world’s leading golf communities. I like to think that our work at Jumeirah Golf Estates will set a new standard for the design and development of sustainable and environmentally friendly courses. Due to this, Dubai truly represents a new way forward for international golf.
ith all your business commitments W and travelling to golf events, how many hours a week do you spend flying?
I average about 600 hours, or about 25 full days, in the air each year. I figure that from the time I first turned professional in 1976 until now, I’ve put in more than eight million air miles. Without my jet and my helicopter, I couldn’t do what I do. It would be utterly impossible. www.bmghuahin.com

Absolutely, some of my most productive meetings both internal and external take place aboard the aircraft. The aircraft also provides me with an opportunity to catch up on my day-to-day work load, and as such, it is extremely efficient.
ow many passengers do you normally H have on a trip?
That’s a good question, I think on average I have three or four passengers on the aircraft.
Finally, from a British point of view, in the early eighties you were always dashing off to catch Concorde. What was your reaction when the Concorde was sadly grounded? Do you think there was any way she could have been kept in service and do you think there will ever be an opportunity to have an aircraft like that again?
As an aviation enthusiast, I loved crossing the Atlantic on the Concorde. I became very good friends with one of the chief pilots for the British Airways Concorde Program. I believe supersonic travel will most likely return to the private sector ahead of the public sector. I am aware of several manufacturers who are currently experimenting with the idea. With the advent of fractional programs such as Net Jet, I think there is room in their inventory for a supersonic jet program, which provides the operators the flexibility to lease different types of aircraft. page 65

As a non-Thai citizen, you cannot own land in Thailand. Also when it comes to apartments, the ownership opportunities are somewhat restricted. For instance, in an apartment complex (so-called condominium) only 49% of the total living area can be owned by non-Thai citizens. For many years, and in spite of these limitations, non-Thai citizens have chosen to invest in homes in Thailand. Today, most houses are being acquired with leasehold right, so-called land lease. A land lease means the buyer signs a lease contract with the owner of the land, through which the landowner grants leasehold right for 30 years to the person who is to build and utilize the
From a legal point of view, this model means that you as a member of Black Mountain: 1. Are a shareholder in the company which will control the area where your home is located. 2. Have an agreement with the company that owns the land, implying a completely unlimited right of possession to the land and the house/apartment. This right of possession is regulated by the laws of Thailand and has no time limitations whatsoever. 3. Have a lease contract for a 30-year period that will be registered with the Department of Lands. Since the limitations in the lease contract are eliminated through the right of possession agreement, this lease contract gives an additional level of security through its registration with the Department of Lands with boundary coordinates for the house officially registered.

The value of your investment will increase as the right of possession to the house and land plot or the apartment comes without any time limitations. With a lease contract only, the value possibly declines towards the end of the first 30-year period due to the uncertainty on the conditions for an extension. 2. Your home investment will be possible to control through a will or through the existing rules of inheritance. 3. It will be possible for you to transfer or resell your investment on your own terms.
