Magazine Design Jumeirah Golf Estates, the premier residential golf community in Dubai, has announced the first concrete pouring at its Norman Clubhouse, another milestone in the progress of the development. The Norman Clubhouse, designed by and named after golf legend Greg Norman, will serve the Fire and Earth courses upon completion ahead of the first Dubai World Championship in November 2009.

Work on the foundations of the clubhouse, which at 131,000 square feet will be one of the largest in the Middle east, was completed in april, ahead of the concreting which started recently. this progress follows another recent announcement that Greg norman’s earth course has been chosen as the host venue for the richest tournament in world golf, the inaugural Dubai World Championship, in november 2009. a landmark of elegance and style, the Mediterraneaninfluenced norman Clubhouse will offer a range of options for both formal and casual dining, a Wellness Centre with a variety of massage and spa treatments, a sports Centre, a nearby tennis academy, two tennis courts and a coaching facility, and the european tour Centre of excellence with adjoining Golf academy. this important milestone was recognized by David spencer, Chief executive, Golf at leisurecorp, the owner of Jumeirah Golf estates. He said: “this is a big course, with a big tournament and a big designer, in Greg norman. it deserves a big clubhouse – and that’s what it’s getting. this is going to be a stunning facility, somewhere which will attract golfers and non-golfers alike. “i visit the site every few days and it’s been exciting to see the foundations take shape. now, with the first concrete pour, we’re seeing an important milestone. “Greg has designed the best golf courses in the Middle east here at Jumeirah Golf estates, along with the best homes, at his fireside by Greg norman development. He’s now adding the best clubhouse to that roll of honour and, as always,

we thank him for his time, his commitment and his talent.” the norman Clubhouse will be complemented by an ultramodern practice facility and state-of-the-art european tour Centre of excellence and Golf academy. the Golf academy will offer personalized instruction, with low instructor-to-student ratios, using the latest technology and training knowledge to deliver real improvements to every part of the student’s game. the Clubhouse’s sports Centre will cater for a variety of leisure activities, featuring a fully-equipped gymnasium, swimming pools, exercise studio, yoga and pilates studio, a leisure-focused lagoon, a lounge area and a spa and Wellness Centre with several treatment rooms. Dining and entertainment options will include the Golf brasserie, the Cellar private dining, the swing Juice and Health bar, a tiki bar serving the lagoon pools, an events lawn for up to 400 people, a terrace dining area, and a rooftop bar and bbQ terrace. another feature of the norman Clubhouse will be a stunning rock waterfall backdrop to the 18th greens of both the fire and earth courses. Jumeirah Golf estates has brought together the world’s leading golf and course design superstars, to create Dubai’s premier residential golfing community. Greg norman, vijay singh, sergio Garcia and “the father of modern golf course design”, Pete Dye, are working on creating one of the world’s most distinctive golf developments. the four courses - fire, earth,Water, and Wind – will be surrounded by the most desirable residential communities in Dubai. 49

ian Poulter would not wear a waterproof until this. it is not just a brilliant piece of technology, it is also incredibly stylish. until now, waterproof clothing has been solely focused on function rather than fashion. However, the design features of the new iJP (ian James Poulter, the company logo) waterproof suit means that the fit is tailored to the individual shape of the wearer, making the lines incredibly elegant and not billowing at the waist. the focus on the fit does not detract from the fact that both the jacket and the trousers are durable, innovative and high-tech garments. the suit is 100% waterproof, windproof and breathable. What makes the jacket stand out from others is the tailored rather than gathered waistband, making movement easier and the fit spectacular. for comfort there is fleece lining in the collar, the front facing area and the sleeves. the front zip guard, the sealed seams and the light weight lining keep you dry while not weighing you down. the waterproof trousers also boast original features including stretch lining in the knee for additional movement and a tailored waistband with belt loops. every detail has been thought of down to making the back pockets zips slightly deeper and wider to ensure the player can easily fit in both their card and their glove. a tough test run was the open Championship 2008 at royal birkdale, where dreadful weather conditions made life very difficult for the world’s top golfers. the suit protected ian from howling wind and rain, helping him get ahead of the pack and finish 2nd in the tournament.

scotish golfer, simon yates, has found another sport which will fulfil his desire and obsession for speed. a scottish ski champion and Great britain internationalist as a teenager, simon moved to asia in 1995 to compete on the asian tour where he has amassed $2.0 Million in prize money. He has won twice and had twelve second place finishes. He has also won a lexus car for a hole in one, shot a course record 61 in the Hong Kong open and shot the most number of birdies on tour in 1999 and 2003, with 232 and 239 respectively. simon, who now lives in Hua Hin,thailand, has recently found his passion for car racing in asia where he has won several races. What led you to car racing and when did you start? two years ago a thai friend of mine, who is one of the top drivers in thailand, asked me if i would like to join the racing scene. from a young age i have always had the need for speed, after being a ski racer since the age of six, so i thought it would be a good challenge and a new exciting sport to try. How is your time split between golf on the European and Asian Tours and your racing? you can always find time to do other things other than golf. for me it is nice to get away from the golf and do something totally different. is it difficult to set out your schedule, especially when an important golf event clashes with a race? it is difficult to choose between a golf tournament and a racing event when they run on the same dates, but at the end of the day golf is my job and this must come first. the first race of the season in the Honda series was the same weekend as the bMW asian open, so obviously i missed the car race! Last year you raced the Toyota Vios in the ‘One Make Race’. What car are you racing now? last year i raced the toyota one Make (Vios) and had a great season, winning the championship which was a nice experience. in this series the cars are all the same so basically it is down to drivers’ ability. this year i am racing in two series - the toyota yaris series and the Honda civic series. i pretty much just turn up for the weekend and race as i don’t really have the time to test the car.

on a winner here. over the years the site has gradually become smaller. a road was built splitting the property. a large chunk of land was donated for construction of the stunning under construction sri supa ram temple which now dominates the property’s vistas. a large section at the head of the valley will eventually become a huge dam and reservoir, helping to solve chalong bay’s increasingly severe water shortages. the remaining land was just about enough for a standard 9-hole course or a lot of Homesites! instead, JrK directors took the bold decision to build a high quality short course and driving range and retain a few select parcels for future property development, reasoning that they would like to provide a service for customers from every segment of Phuket’s maturing Golf market. a study of Phuket’s logistics seems to back up the plan: While more than half of Phuket’s Hotels are on the southern half of Phuket, all of its Golf courses are on the northern half of the island. additionally, the vast majority of Phuket’s local residents live on the southern half. incidentally in Phuket folklore, hills forming the spine of the island from the southern tip at nai Harn, to just south of Phuket country club, resemble a

kind of ‘Judgement day’ scale sea dragon or naka. it seems the naka has reserved this spot until now. Given such an epic security guard, what else could they name the course but Phunaka! the board of directors felt that night golf availability would attract significant numbers of casual tourist, beginner and senior golfers who may prefer a cooler and easier paced 60-90 minute game rather than to slog through 18-holes in the tropical heat. the directors were also smart enough to realize that discerning golfers were likely to become regulars only if they got a genuine fix for their golfing addiction. in short, the challenge on offer had to be ‘real Golf’ with first class playing conditions. With par-3’s ranging from 100 to 190 yards and playing to all compass points, a short and a medium par-4 and a real par-5, players will need ‘every club in the bag’. With this focus, we also made sure the very youngest and oldest golfers were not forgotten by adding forward tees where needed. tees and fairways will be grassed with bermuda Mountain Green; a new hybrid grass that grows aggressively laterally rather than vertically. this vivid green grass is among golf’s most drought tolerant grasses and growing

This outstanding two-week spell in early 2008 saw him win for the first time on both The European Tour and the Asian Tour, resulting in him being named as The European Tour Golfer of the Month for February. After an unsuccessful start to his professional career, he You have had a tremendous year. What would be the main factor you would put this down to? I think it was down to a 5-week break I had in Wellington, New Zealand, where I practised hard and this enabled me to come out strong.

Robin Briars recently fired a few questions to the in-form Kiwi. Do you have anyone who regularly travels with you? Helen my fiancé, who is also my manager, and Max Cunningham, my European caddy will also travel with me in Europe and to selected events in Asia. What would you be doing if you were not playing golf on the tour? I did work for 3 years in the golf industry, so I would probably be doing something within golf.

Having secured your card just 2 years ago, did you have any idea that you could achieve this success so soon? Not really. I was 15th in the Order of Merit the previous year (2007) so I was hoping to win on the Asian Tour, but did not expect to win a European Tour event so quickly, which was the Johnnie Walker Classic at DLF Golf and Country Club in New Delhi, India.

How have you been received back in New Zealand after being leader of the Asian Order of Merit? Has there been much media coverage there? There has been a lot of media coverage for my golf in New Zealand but as I have not been there much it is hard to follow it all.

Was the Asian Tour School 2006 your first attempt? I played in 1996 on the Omega Tour, as it was called then, came back in 2006, qualified for my card and then established myself on the tour in 2007.

57

worked as a junior development officer at the Wellington Golf Association before rededicating himself to the game when he won the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2006.

Where did you originally start playing golf? Shandon Golf Club in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand.

How did you enjoy your first Major Championship? The Oakland Hills Country Club for the USPGA Championship was a tough course, similar to an Open set up. I had a bad first day but then managed to break par twice, which I don’t think many players would have done. I really enjoyed it and I was pleased to finish 24th. How would you compare playing the US PGA tour to the European Tour? The players on the PGA Tour are really well looked after and there is more hype with the spectators at the events in the US. Europe is a bit more low-key. The standard of play on the tours are very similar now with the strength in numbers. What are you focusing on this coming year? To play in all co-sanctioned events and selected Asian Tour events during 2009 and, together with the other players, focusing on the race to Dubai. Which is your favourite course in Asia? Delhi Golf Club - India. What aspects of life on Tour do you like and dislike? I love golf so consider myself to be very lucky. However, the travelling near the end of the year gets a bit much at times.

2

Do you find it difficult sometimes maintaining the right diet when travelling? It has been easy this week in Thailand! But we are really lucky with the players’ lounges on tour in Europe. I just have to be careful not to eat too much.

What’s up Brownie?

Who are your best friends on the Tour? Richard Lee, Stephen Scarhill and Mahal Pearce on the Asian tour. The European Tour players do not seem to spend that much time together because the weeks are shorter. They arrive on Tuesday and leave Sunday, so it’s not quite as social. Helen travels with me a lot so we try to socialise with other couples. Can you see Tiger carrying on where he left off in 2008? Tiger will be fine. I’m sure he will be as good as before, just so long as his knee is ok. Do you have a favourite country to visit? That’s a tough one. I love the UK, and also India. India is a tough place to travel around, but I love the Indian people. What is Mark Brown’s perfect day and what are your interests outside golf? Relaxing at home enjoying a nice bottle of red wine with dinner, watching some sport on TV, including rugby and cricket, and a day with no flying! I have also fronted a Men’s health campaign back in New Zealand based around prevention of cancer.

Golf in Phuket is expensive. at the proposed 750 baht 9-hole ‘walk in’ rate is now less than half the price of the next cheapest 9-holes on the island and nearly 90% cheaper than Phuket’s priciest 18-hole green fee! loch Palm member and JrK Managing director Mr. suwat Wangkiat loved what we had done at red Mountain and gave us freedom to propose whatever we felt was appropriate for the site. a designer can’t ask more of a client. it’s a design cliché, i know, but on my first steps on the site in over 10 years, i immediately saw several ‘natural’ green sites. in my design experience, finding a really stunning natural green site and a suitable way to approach it is by far the best way to create a beautiful and memorable hole. although we proposed several different routing plans and changes were made as a little more land became available, 3 of those potential holes: the 1st, the 4th and the 5th were eventually built though the 5th is played in reverse. the land has a distinctly ‘linksy feel’. I always wondered if the old saying, ”Good things come to those who wait” had any basis of truth. In the case of the Phunaka Golf Course project it surely does. As long as 10 years ago, I remember exploring this site and thinking what a great 18-hole Golf Course this would make. As on all of Phuket’s Golf Course sites, tin mine operations ceased decades ago and left a landscape of opportunities.

on this site, a barren but nevertheless fascinating landscape was resurrected for us to discover. nature, in my humble opinion, is the undisputed champion of landscape design on degraded sites. We’re talking tiger and big Jack combined type dominance here. Given an army of labourers and an unlimited budget, man would struggle to come up with something as simple and powerful as what we were left to find at Phunaka. i can picture, whoever was designated to take care of the Phunaka repair job by those above, standing on the site with the team saying oK, let’s try something different here. and different it certainly is. the result is a landscape somewhere between the tropics and scottish links land. ten years on and the waiting is almost over. We are putting the final touches to what may just turn out to be a groundbreaking project. there are 9 holes and the par is just 31. there is also probably the best planned driving range in the south of thailand and there is going to be night lighting, a first for Phuket. in the us it would be called an executive or short course, the former a tag, i admit, i never understood. development course may be a better term for Phunaka. For centuries, travellers have been making the journey from far away lands to view and immerse themselves in the magical wonders that Asia has to offer. In recent times, travellers have flocked to Thailand in droves and with the booming tourism industry came a popular expat resident society. With Hua Hin, one of the most popular beachside resort towns in the country, many foreign residents are making this beautiful part of Thailand their home.

Thailand is a very diverse country with mountain regions in the north, a huge bustling capital city of Bangkok and magical coastlines and islands strewn along the southern shores. This variety also brings a wide range of people with varied backgrounds, religions and beliefs as well as lifestyles. Travelling through the country can be an eye opening time and one of the most joyous experiences of ones life. With Thailand’s capital of Bangkok being positioned conveniently in the region and its airports, now ranking in the top 20 busiest in the world, those residents interested in exploring or simply needing to fly for business reasons will find easy access to air travel to just about anywhere. local travel throughout the country is well established and pretty much pain free. Many airlines cover most of the routes as well as bus, train and taxi’s for shorter distances being inexpensive and easy. in towns, taxi’s, tuk-tuks and even rick-shaws are avail-

able with motorbike taxi’s being very popular with locals although maybe a little dangerous on busy roads. Most town transportation should be negotiated up-front. Thailand is universally know as “The land of Smiles” and justifiably so. Throughout the kingdom foreigners are greeted with the customary smiles, Thai Wai and “Sawedee” (Hello). in most towns, the local people will have some english language skills, however, the further from these towns and cities one travels it becomes more difficult to make conversation. learning some Thai language is a must and the basics are quite easy to pick up.

Hua Hin

Many foreigners who chose to live in Thailand search for the perfect coastal town to make their home. With its sandy beaches and many facilities, Hua Hin is becoming the first choice for many of those residents. Location The resort town of Hua Hin is positioned on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and around 200 kilometers south of the Bangkok capital. The town has been a popular destination for many of Thailands residents for many years and is even home to the country’s extremely popular Royal family. a large proportion of the community is formed by Bangkok residents purchasing homes and making regular weekend getaways. eventually, those residents retire to Hua Hin for a quieter life. Climate Being close to the equator, Thailand can boast a year round warm climate. Temperatures are often around 25-30 degrees. During the months of october through

to april, Hua Hin enjoys a very enjoyable temperature with humidity at some of the countries lowest. in terms of rainfall during the “rainy” season, Hua Hin seems to only receive frequent heavy showers that makes playing golf a daily possibility. We have never closed our doors due to weather conditions. Shopping Throughout Thailand, just about anything can be bought from local markets. fresh produce is readily available at very competitive prices. for those that like the large branded supermarkets, Hua Hin has a Tesco-lotus store as well as the recently opened Hua Hin Market Village which is an air conditioned, multi-store shopping mall where days can be spent roaming around all the stores. This center opened in 2006 and is the towns first large scale shopping and entertainment complex and has grown in popularity amongst residents and visitors. The three major outlets in Market Village are Tesco-lotus, Home Pro and Major Cineplex, it also has a food court for inexpensive local dishes, a number of branded restaurants, a ten-pin bowling alley and large variety of small stores with popular clothing brands such as levis, lee, lacoste, Bata, Body Glove and many more. other facilities in the center are banks, mobile phone outlets, camera stores and book shops. Hospitals Health is a concern for many foreign residents. Hua Hin has two major hospitals including one private international hospital with international standards. However, for serious concerns, Bangkok with its large choice of good medical facilities is only a short trip away.

Making dreams come true Q

Why Hua Hin? Hua Hin Country Club

Reputation

Hua Hin has been a popular seaside resort with many Thailand residents for over 70 years and is also home to the Thai Royal Family, a fact that Hua Hin residents are justifiably proud of. Many of Thailand’s rich and famous have purchased Hua Hin property and the resort town is a favourite weekend getaway for many Bangkok residents.

Q

A P A RT M E N T S

Lifestyle

The last few years have seen Hua Hin rapidly grow from a small fishing village into a sophisticated beachside resort destination whilst losing none of its original charm. The increase in both tourism and property has benefited the area with the opening of modern shopping centres, a wide choice of accommodation and facilities, improved infrastructure and western educational facilities now making the area appealing to couples, families and those wishing to retire in Thailand. Despite its growth and development Hua Hin’s beaches and surrounding areas remain largely unspoilt and still give the flavour of rural Thailand. What Hua Hin lacks in terms of discos and all night entertainment venues, it makes up for in its appeal to those who are seeking a quieter but charming home, full of seafood restaurants, cafes and of course golf. One of the major attractions for the Hua Hin resident is its golfing opportunities. Hua Hin offers no less than six world-class golf courses, the highest density of golf courses in all of Thailand. It is also a paradise for nature lovers with a number of national parks within easy reach.

Convenience

The capital, Bangkok, is less than 3 hours drive away (200km) giving residents easy access to its hive of activities as well as the ability to enjoy beautiful unspoilt beaches, clean air and a quiet, relaxed, safe environment in which to live and do business. Hua Hin also has one of the best climates in Thailand due to its geographical location. With Hua Hin being centrally located it gives its residents ample opportunity for local travel. Whether heading north, south, east or west, Hua Hin gives easy access with quality highways for the drivers and other transportation such as trains, buses and the international aiports in Bangkok all within reach.

Facilities

Recently, Hua Hin announced the opening of establishements such as Tesco Lotus and Hua Hin Market Village. These worldwide chains provide everything from western food to bowling alleys, cinemas and a vast array of eateries and bars all placed conveniently in the local shopping district. Residents can also boast the availability of international standard health care within close proximity, with costs representing a fraction of those in the western world.

Hole

Local Rules 1. Out of bounds are defined by white stakes and or boundary fences on holes 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15. 2. Drop zones are in play on holes 14 and 16. 3. A ball coming to rest in a flower bed must be dropped at the nearest point of relief, no matter the hole. 4. Free relief may be taken if immovable obstructions, such as staked trees, cart paths, any permanent irrigation and drainage fixtures, shelters, kiosks, yardage markers or any other artificial materials, interfere with stance or swing. 5. An embedded ball “through the green” may be marked, lifted, cleaned and dropped within one club length, not nearer the hole.

The Benefits

Etiquette 1. It is every golfer’s responsibility to abide by the course’s pace of play policy. a. Choose a set of realistic set of tees for your ability. b. Always keep up with the group ahead of you. c. Minimize the amount of time spent looking for lost balls. d. Be ready to hit your shot when it is your turn to play. e. After play, leave the green immediately and proceed to the next tee. 2. Fairway distance markers are defined by “red” at 100 yards, “white” at 150 yards, and “blue” at 200 yards. Those are measured from the markers to the center of the green. 3. Golfers are responsible for any damage or injury occurred during play. 4. Appropriate Golf Attire is required at the discretion of the Management. 5. Please ensure caddies repair all divots and ball marks on greens and rake bunkers after use. 6. Please co-operate with slow play marshals. They are there to help all golfers enjoy a reasonable speed of play.

Copywriting Black Mountain Golf Couse - Hua Hin Whether you are a golf lover or just a lover of good scenery, the views over Black Mountain Golf Resort are spectacular from the vantage point of Hua Hin Country Club. For those that do enjoy a hit, the course has now been open for over a year and has recieved awards such as “Best New Course in Thailand” and runner up in “Best New Course in Asia”. The designers have strived to keep the natural feel to the course with as many natural features being retained to enhance the visual appeal of the layout. The most important features are the natural creeks that run throughout the course and the natural rock enclaves that have been used as design features on many of the holes. A very important feature in the design concept, was to create a course that could be a test for the top golfers in the world but also very playable and enjoyable to the average golfer. All the holes provide the golfer with a safe route but for the more adventurous player there is a higher risk option with a potential greater reward. The design offers generous fairways for the shorter hitter but becoming narrower for the longer hitter. The greens are large with many pin positions with different degrees of difficulty and the course is well protected by beautifully sculptured bunkers. The Paspalum grass gives a wonderful playing surface and a beautiful emerald green colour. It was decided to use tifeagle Bermuda grass on the greens as this is now recognized as the best putting surface in tropical areas. No expense has been spared to make the golf course as good as possible and the same is true of the clubhouse. The view from the clubhouse is truly stunning and gives a panoramic view of the whole course. The clubhouse facilities on offer include fine dining in the restaurant, a well stocked golf shop and luxurious locker rooms. Black Mountain intends to offer service and dining to a standard that is normally only found in the finest hotels.
