EDITOR’S LETTER

A four-hole playoff too painful to watch Maybe it was too much to ask? For a fleeting moment you could imagine the prize presentation at Turnberry with Tom Watson, at the age of 59, raising the Claret Jug for a sixth time. That’s not the way it turned out of course. Sometimes the dream choice doesn’t happen and the fairytale story doesn’t end the way you think it should. Rarely though does a major championship end like this one, to polite applause from a gallery of long faces. Instead of holding up the Claret Jug on the 18th green, Watson choked back tears and could only manage a tight smile. He wasn’t alone in his sadness, thousands of fans who filled the grandstands all week sat in stunned silence. Not long afterwards Watson was asked if he could provide a headline for what had happened at the 138th Open Championship. “The Old Fogey almost did It,” he said. “It would have been a hell of a story, wouldn’t it? But it wasn’t to be.” For sure the ‘Old Fogey’, ranked 1274th in the World Rankings, came close. In fact, he was one shot away from winning. Watson was right there, standing over a putt from 8 feet on the 72nd hole, a putt that would beat Stewart Cink by one shot, win the Open and make history. He missed, and it would be Stewart Cink’s day as the playoff eventually proved.

A four-hole playoff that, in my opinion, was almost too painful to watch. Tom had one more meeting with the media on his agenda and noticed the looks on their faces as they squeezed into the media centre. He looked up, grinned and said “Hey, this ain’t a funeral, you know.” Watson will make his last Open appearance next year at St Andrews unless the Royal and Ancient reverses its policy of allowing past champions to compete beyond the age of 60. It is even more disappointing, in view of his challenge at Turnberry, that the age limit has only recently been reduced by five years. Otherwise, had he won, Watson would have gained entry for another ten years as a fresh exemption. He was 26 when he played his first Open in 1975 at Carnoustie and won. He has played in 30 more since, winning five times. That’s a record that makes Watson very proud and a measure of what he has given to the the game of golf. Watson said it sort of reminds him of a goal of his. “What I’ve always said is that when all is said and done, one of the things that I hope will come out of my life is that my peers will say, ‘You know, that Watson, he was a hell of a golfer.’ ”

The world’s

longest and highest Par-3

Retief Goosen looks down at the green before hitting his drive.

Set high up on the impressive Hanglip Mountain, it is the longest Par 3 in the world and is accessible only by an exhilarating helicopter ride. Golfers are invited to tee-off from the edge of the mountain in attempt to hit a hole-in-one on the 19th located at the bottom of the cliff. The sheer scale of the golf course, with large undulating greens and strategic bunkers and the majestic mountainous backdrop together with the Extreme 19th, make for a unique golfing experience.

11

The Legend Golf & Safari Resort presents a world first, namely a championship golf course designed by eighteen of the world’s top golfers. These leading professionals, selected to add their design expertise to the Signature course, share the fascination and spirit of golf. The course is the longest in Africa, providing all golfers, irrespective of their handicap, the experience of a true African challenge. The course plays at 6,534 metres for daily play but is capable of being extended to 7,748 metres.

The world’s longest and highest par three, the signature hole at Legends Golf and Safari Resort, has its tee box poised at a dizzying height atop of Hanglip Mountain, 1,410 feet above the green and is only accessible by helicopter! This means that the ball needs to travel an incredible 830 metres from tee to green (the total distance across and down)! Padraig Harrington became the first-ever golfer to make par on this amazing hole in a playoff against Raphael Jacquelin. Balls hit off the tee are estimated to have a ‘hang time’ of 26 seconds, so a little help is needed in keeping an eye on the white dimpled orb. With technology in the form of four separate cameras and tracking equipment, Padraig and Raphael were able to track their tee shots and the flight of their balls, while ball watchers stood ready to point out where the balls had landed on the ‘map of Africa’ green. Your average thrill-seeking golfer can play this bizarre hole in addition to a round of 18 holes, or as an experience on its own, and a hole-in-one will earn you one million US dollars! Raphael and Padraig may not have posted holes-in-one, but they are two of 18 well-known golfers who have each designed one of the course’s signature holes. The list of signatures who have been honoured to work on the project reads like a who’s who of world golf including - Trevor Immelman, Sergio Garcia, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, KJ Choi, Retief Goosen and of course Padraig Harrington and Raphael Jacquelin to name but a few. Padraig Harrington is the first to conquer the Extreme 19th with a par three. For further information regarding the Legend Golf & Safari Resort, visit - www.legendgolfsafari.com. 12

Par-3 Many golfers dream of packing the clubs and heading off to exotic or historic courses around the globe to conquer the greatest and hardest golf holes available. In this issue Swing Image have listed nine Par-3 golf holes you must try to play and, hopefully, will never forget.

South Africa Hole 13 Lost City Course, Sun City Be aware of the Crocodile pit in front of the tee. The lost City course is carved out of undulating rocky terrain and has a classical African feel. The unforgettable par-three 13th (unlucky for some) fits in as the signature hole, with the green shaped like the African continent. With the 40 Nile crocodiles that make their home on the 13th hole, it has understandably become the graveyard for many golf balls. www.suncity.com

16

Thailand Hole 14 Blue Canyon Country Club With the tee just outside the clubhouse, this hole has made for good viewing at many tour events such as the Johnnie Walker Classic. The challenge is the intimidating tee shot, which drops several meters in elevation to a tight green surrounded by a large lagoon. It plays 194 yards from the championship black plate, or 143 yards from the regular white plate. Don’t get distracted from your normal routine. Visualise your ball flight, make a positive swing thought, and enjoy one of the most spectacular holes in golf. www.bluecanyonclub.com

A fantastic 232 yard par-3 with a cascading waterfall left of the half-island green. A hole where it is wise to always aim for the centre of the green and be content with a par. Hole 9 Royal Troon - The Postage Stamp

Scotland

It measures just 123 yards in length, but the Postage Stamp remains one of golf ’s greatest holes. This famous hole has left many amateurs feeling frustrated, but has also wrecked the scorecard of some of the game’s greatest at the Open Championship. Allow your ball to slip off the stamp and it will leave you in either some of Britain’s deepest bunkers or one of the many hollows for which Troon is famous. It is rumoured that soldiers used the area for handgrenade practice during the Second World War and that they are to blame for the bottomless pits that are so difficult to get out of.

Jumeirah Island

Swing Image just visited the site of one of the most exclusive and luxurious resort developments in Asia, Jumeirah Private Island in Phuket, Thailand, and discovered an island paradise that few will ever experience.

25

At some point in our lives we have all imagined The Development Private Island is just a five-minute helicopter ride living on an idyllic island, surrounded by Jumeirah from Phuket International Airport. If you prefer, estate owners turquoise waters and edged with soft, white can take a 20-minute chauffeur-driven limousine journey to sandy beaches, it is hard to believe that such the coast, and then be whisked to their own rather generous portions of paradise on a private launch. This limited journey a place could actually exist. While one could, time is a priceless bonus for executives wanting to escape of course, purchase one’s own island the day-to-day as quickly as possible, something that endless internal flights and long car journeys can only mar. paradise, the investment on such a piece of In order to avoid a clash of architectural styles, the developers have already confirmed that the hotel, spa, yacht land would be considerable. Thanks to insider contacts, Swing Image was given the opportunity to visit a new island development in the Andaman Sea, just off the eastern shores of Phuket in Thailand. Making the way from the mainland to this Xanadu, called Jumeirah Private Island, we took in the truly stunning views of Phuket’s verdant mainland and the hundreds of limestone islands that appear to float in the crystal clear waters. We obviously did some research before arriving in Thailand, and the literature which the team behind the project had sent us was suitably impressive, portraying a private deepwater marina (with 24hr access), a fivestar deluxe all-villa hotel managed by world-renowned Jumeirah Group out of Dubai, a private yacht club, spa and wellness centre and luxury estate homes. 26

club and residential estates will all have an Asian theme throughout, with substantial use of local hardwoods, granite and stone, utilizing the skills of local craftsmen for wood and stone carving, which will feature strongly in the designs.

The Hotel

The Island’s hotel is, in fact, a series of individual villas, each with their own pool and based around the contours of the land and the existing vegetation. The administration centre of the hotel will be located on the mainland, so guests will benefit from the maximum of recreation areas on the island. All villas will have a dedicated butler service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the list of amenities that will be available for hotel guests is seriously impressive: a 1400 square meter spa and wellness centre, three themed restaurants and two bars, a state-ofthe-art business centre, tennis courts, gym and fitness centre with personal trainers, yacht charters and an accredited dive

centre. Jumeirah Island will provide memberships at the Blue Canyon Golf and Country Club, consistently voted a number one course in Asia, as part of an optional premium package. As for who runs the hotel, this Jumeirah Group is one of the top hotel management groups in the world. The chosen group will also take on the management of the entire Island and they will manage the estate houses on behalf of the owners, and provide them with hotel service 24/7, including in-house dining.

The Residential Estate

Those building their own customized estate homes will be an exclusive breed, as a very limited number of estate homes are planned on plots ranging in size from over one to five acres, many with direct frontage to the beach and all with stunning sea and island views. Furthermore, available options in their purchase will be preferential mooring rights in the Marina, together with a membership in the exclusive Jumeirah

Private Island Yacht Club, as well as full access to the hotel and spa services. The latest fiber-optic technology will ensure a complete communications system so that homeowners are assured of the latest high speed internet access in the privacy of their own Villa. Privacy and security will be an important factor with access to the Island only possible by helicopter or the Island’s launches, and all estate owners and yacht club members will have their own biometric identification, whilst hotel guests will be issued with ID passes incorporated within their room keys. As well as the glossy brochures, the developers have put together a management structure including a Board of Directors that boasts international property developers who, between them, have over 120 years of experience. 27

It is a perfect and highly exclusive mix and, although not cheap, the prices quoted for pieces of this paradise are very competitive compared to similar developments underway around the world, which lack Jumeirah Private Island’s enviable location, quality infrastructure, luxurious amenities and proximity to international links.

The Marina

Adjoining the marina will be a yacht club, which will have outstanding facilities and where membership will be by invitation only. As part of the Hotel and Marina, there will be a connoisseur deli, where residents can buy their staples (fresh fruit, meat and vegetables and freshly-baked bread) and order

items from the mainland (which will be delivered directly to their door), or even partake in a daily international newspaper over a croissant and latte at the village cafĂŠ. The Marina is being built within a natural protected bay, with a total commitment to preserve the established mangrove and other flora and fauna, which form a lush backdrop, all work being undertaken will be to the highest environmental standards. Situated adjacent to an existing deep-water channel, the Marina will allow even the largest private yachts to have access

28

at all states of the tide, and boats up to 90 meters can be accommodated. Anyone familiar with this part of the world will know that accessible deep-water marinas are extremely rare in Thailand, unless they are commercial ports. We are not aware of any other Thai marina that can take these superyachts and offer all of the facilities available at Jumeirah Private Island. The developers say, and Swing Image has to agree, that it will set new standards across the boards. Remind your accountant after you have placed your order at Sunseeker, that tax and fuel prices are significantly cheaper here than in Europe, the US or Australasia. Work on the Marina is over 70% complete and it is targeted to accept yachts very soon.

Nick Dougherty

“I don’t want to get to the end of my life and think: I wish I’d done that, you know, when you’re too old and you’ve got your Zimmer Frame.”

School reports for Nick Dougherty revealed: “Nick turned up late but always got the job done.” It proved to be a prophesy for his life. The teenage prodigy turned professional one week after starring in the victorious 2001 Walker Cup team and was Rookie of the Year in his first season on the European Tour. But glandular fever and a penchant for a playboy lifestyle put his career in the slow lane until he won the Dunhill Links Championship in October 2007. He was expected to surge on in 2008 and qualify for his first Ryder Cup. And then his mother died, his form slumped and he dropped out of the World’s Top 50. “I just collapsed after my mum died,” Dougherty says. “Up until that point, I was going to make the Ryder Cup team. In 2007, I was definitely one of the best players in Europe. Everything was hunky-dory. Then my world turned upside-down in 2008. It hit me like a ton of bricks. But, in time, you know, you start to heal and I collected myself and realised that I have the potential to be a great player.” Victory in June at the BMW International Open in Munich has signalled Dougherty’s much anticipated return to the limelight, taking his career earnings to £5 million. “It’s great to win again,” he says. “It’s probably my best ever victory.” Through all his ups and downs, Dougherty has maintained his sense of humour and remains one of the most likeable and approachable players on tour. Finally, it seems, the now 27-year-old looks ready to fullfil the promise that once prompted Nick Faldo to hail him as the Next Big Thing. You had a glamorous nickname for a while? The Georgie Best nickname that my mates gave me would have been great if it was for my talent but it was because I was supping it every night. To compare what I was doing to what George did was unfair. Because George liked to have a drink but he was also one of the best footballers who ever lived. George was a legend. Whereas I was just having a drink (laughs). I was 19 when I first came out on tour. And there’s not a kid who can say they partied as much as me. All of a sudden I had a high profile and was travelling around the world enjoying great nights out in great cities with booze and birds and plenty of cash. You know, what else was I going to do! When you’re 19, you think you are indestructible.

Interview by Paul Mahoney 33

Regrets? I don’t regret it. I might have if I had kept living like that. I was wasting my life. It’s amazing that, at the time, you don’t see it. But it was obvious it wasn’t helping my golf. People weren’t talking about me any more. You know, I was the Next Big Thing and Luke Donald and I had great amateur careers and turned pro together and I should have been playing Ryder Cups like Luke. I realised I had to knuckle down and change my discipline and work ethic. Now I don’t even have a single drink at a tournament. Before, I used to tip it down my neck because they were good times. That’s not what I do anymore when I’m working. But I still go out for a few beers with my mates when I’m home. When did you feel under the most pressure on a golf course? In 1997 when I was losing my card. If you lose your job, you’re just fired, you have to earn your way back and that could take years. That year, I was really struggling and had only won £85,000 going to the German Masters late in the season. I really felt the pressure coming down the stretch. I was playing for my job. I am hugely disappointed when I just miss out on winning a tournament but your life does not change and there will be another chance to win next week. But if someone says, ‘if you screw this up, you’ve got no career’, that’s a whole different kind of pressure. Pressure when there is a chance to win is nice pressure. That was fear.

34

Which other sport would you have liked to play professionally? I much prefer rugby to football. I was a prop forward at school. I was a chubby lad (smiles). I captained the school and saw a few broken legs, thankfully not mine, and stopped playing. I was a Scouser from Liverpool, even though I support Man United, and so wasn’t that popular going to school in Blackburn. But I got my own back playing rugby. I’m not a violent person but you can do what you like on a rugby field. I used to line them up and get stuck in. What do you hate about travel? It’s not as glamorous as people think. You get home late Sunday night, if you’re lucky, then you have to get up early to fly somewhere else on Monday morning, then you are jet-lagged but you still have to practice. And you live out of a suitcase sleeping in a different bed every week. But I get paid a shed load of cash for doing what I love. It is my job. But it is a highlystrung job and there are lots of emotional highs and lows. But you can change your life with one good week, which you can’t do in a normal job. What can’t money buy? Money can’t buy you tournament wins and to win is the main reason I play. Money can’t buy you friends or a wife. But after I won the Dunhill Links, I bought a new house in Sunningdale. It only has four bedrooms, not six. I won the Dunhill, not the US Open. Money can buy me the lifestyle I like to lead. I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I went to a driving school

Nick was paired with Michelle Wie at the Omega European Masters, Switzerland where she played her first round on the mens European Tour.

35

Do you cry at the movies? I remember watching the Perfect Storm for the first time. I got so into the movie; I forgot that it’s a true story. You get to know their families and the wives back home and I just assumed everyone was going to be all right. And when they all die, it really got to me. What’s your worst characteristic? I am impatient and too much of a perfectionist. And I haven’t always been this way. Ever since I changed my work ethic, it has leaked into my entire life. So I am now particularly tidy. Always. Everything has to be in the right place. All my jumpers have to be colour co-ordinated in the right drawer. You need routine but I think I have gone into overkill. I am trying to find a balance.

Winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews

at a racetrack in the UK recently and was driving Audi S6s with a beefed up engine. That was proper driving. You can’t drive fast in the UK anymore because it seems there are police speed cameras every 100 yards. My dad has always said to me you should do something each day that scares you. That’s a good philosophy for life. You get more out of it. I don’t want to get to the end of my life and think: I wish I’d bloody done that, you know, when you’re too old, and you’ve got your Zimmer frame. Get stuck in now. How much would you have to be paid to dress like Ian Poulter? That’s not my thing (smiles). But what he has done is awesome. He has marketed himself really well and is very popular in the States because over there it’s all beige chinos and polo shirts. But he’s a bit too loud for me (laughs). What are you listening to on your iPod? All kinds of stuff. Coldplay, the Beatles, Elvis Presley. I’m a massive fan of Hootie and the Blowfish. I love dance music - you know, uplifting head candy house music. But I also like Bon Jovi, Guns ’n’ Roses - and musicals. Musicals are awesome, you know, Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff. I’ve seen Phantom (that’s Phantom of the Opera, obviously), seven times. I get goose bumps. Blood Brothers is one of my favourites and Lion King, too. 36

On the Great Wall of China.

Are sports psychologists gurus or fakes? Stuff you learn with psychologists may well be fantastic but there is a new science called Heart Math and it is going to revolutionise golf. It’s all numbers and facts. Like Numbers on TV, Head Math says that, under stress, your brain secretes a chemical and switches off. So it’s all very cool stuff. Tiger does something like it but nobody really knows about it. It is about breathing techniques and the way your heart beats. There is a way to make yourself go into that zone that we all talk about – and maintain it. Tiger seems to be able to that. It’s always searching for that 1% and there is a

lot of placebo in golf. You know, if you believe in it, it’s enough sometimes. Even if it’s wrong (smiles). The Ryder Cup: a dream unfulfilled? I so wanted to play on Nick’s team (at Valhalla in 2008). My mum always wanted me to play in the Ryder Cup. She taught me a lot and golf was a huge part of our life, so what better thing for me to do than try to make that side and achieve what she had hoped for me. She taught me to be that way, and my dad also would expect nothing less of me, and I would expect nothing less of me. I’m definitely a good enough player to be on a Ryder Cup side and I’ll be there for Wales in 2010. Do you have what it takes to win majors? It’s just a matter of time. It will happen, yeah, inevitably. Whether it’s next year, in two years, or five years. I’m hopefully going to win a major championship. There are too many of us coming through not for it to happen. You’ve got to think there’s going to be a few majors between us. I don’t believe you have to serve your apprenticeship to win a major championship. People are always going on about experience, but I think Lucas Glover (2009 US Open champion) is a great example of that. I believe that if I keep doing what I am, I’ll have some chances down the line, and hopefully I’ll take some of them.

Playing in Tiger’s era: good or bad? He has transformed the game. There is so much money now. He is a role model for all young golfers – and for me too. I learn a lot from watching him and playing with him. He has made golf cool. It’s amazing for one man to have such influence. I’m not even sure Michael Jordan had that. Tiger is the greatest sportsman who ever lived, and that includes Muhammad Ali and Pele. So every time you beat him, that’s pretty impressive. You won’t beat him many times – and he’s certainly got the upper hand on me. But when you do beat him, it’s hugely rewarding. What motivates you most? I would love to win major championships but it’s not the majors that drive me. It’s to be World No.1. That’s my main goal. Just to be No.1 for one week is enough. To say that you are the best in the world. Every time you drive past a golf course anywhere in the world, to say that you are the best golfer of all the golfers in the world; that must be awesome. Vijay (Singh) overtook Tiger and it will happen again. He’s not going to be No.1 for the rest of his life. It would be nice to take it off Tiger. Someone’s going to do it. 37

The Emirates A380 a premium hotel in the sky

Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, brought its very own brand of double decker to London recently with the arrival of its industry leading A380. The Emirates A380 will operate on flights EK001 and EK002 between Heathrow and Dubai. The A380 deployed on its Heathrow - Dubai route is the third of 58 that the carrier ordered, making it by far the largest customer for the super-efficient superjumbo. Despite its colossal size, the Emirates A380 makes less than half the noise of a jumbo jet and uses 20 per cent less fuel. Emirates President Tim Clark said: “We are delighted to bring our customers state-of-the-art comforts which are unmatched anywhere else in the world. “Despite today’s challenging economic environment, they have responded by being very popular from day one. “Our major onboard innovations, the Onboard Shower Spas and Onboard Lounge, have already proved a big hit with customers. Around 75 per cent of our First Class passengers are using the showers in-flight, while the Onboard Lounge has proved a popular gathering spot for passengers who are able to tear themselves away from our revolutionary in-flight entertainment system.” “Due to its environmentally-friendly performance, the Emirates A380s will make a huge contribution to efforts to reduce overall emissions.”

Black Mountain

2009 has been a big year for the new kid on the Hua Hin block and, if form continues, the remainder of the year will be more of the same.

The club went one step further with its ongoing efforts to promote golf in Hua Hin by reducing green fees by a staggering 50% during the months of May to October 2009 making a round on arguably the best course in Thailand, kept in competition standard, a mere 1,500 baht. Back in March, Black Mountain Golf Club hosted their first professional tournament in the Black Mountain Masters 2009. This Asian Tour event, the first for the region, was a resounding success that not only put the enthusiastic club on the map but also introduced thousands of people around the world to the beautiful area of Hua Hin. Winning the event was Sweden’s Johan Edfors with a final round 68 holding off fast finishing local, Prayad Marksaeng by two shots. “I knew that the last three holes, I could shoot low. No one had made a charge except for Prayad who played a fantastic round. I knew I had it in my hands and knew that I needed to perform in the last few holes,” said Edfors. “This is one of the nicest wins of my career as I’ve not had so many Swedes supporting me during my other wins,” he commented. Over the duration of the event, golfers around the world were treated by the courses natural beauty with highly positive feedback being quoted from those that made a visit. The groundskeepers and maintenance staff were complimented on the courses high condition during the event so much that the management then ordered this level of course quality to be maintained year round. competition standard, a mere 1,500 baht. However, golf is not the only focus at Black Mountain. Their property project has been progressing quickly with all 14 villas now completed and the 89 condominium project being scheduled to open to residents in October later this year. Black Mountain General Manager, Mr Harald Elisson commented, “we are extremely pleased with the progress of our property developments here at Black Mountain. The condominiums are now 50% sold and we are receiving new enquiries every day. The area of Hua Hin for the golf lover is certainly increasing and our customers seem to appreciate our high quality standards here.” The project starts off from ground floor 2-bedroom units with floor space of 140 square meters. For a low 5.9 m baht price tag this is incredible value for money considering the quality fit out and stunning golf course views. Also available are 3-bedroom units at 182 square meters and the huge top floor penthouses at around 317 square meters of first class golf course living. The communal grounds have not been forgotten here either with the large infinity pool overlooking the course, what better way to spend a post golfing day than by the course-side pool. Condo residents will also be pleased to know that the popular Black Mountain Club restaurant will also be expanded with an outlet at their doorstep. Most of the popular dishes that the restaurant is famous for will be served allowing poolside dining in a magical setting.

45

Condos at Black Mountain start off at a huge 140 square meters and only 5.9 million baht, makeing a fantastic value investment. For those investors that strive for the top of the list, the luxury course-side villas are also selling quickly. Following on from his landmark win at the Black Mountain Masters 2009, Johan Edfors was so impressed by the quality standards and tranquillity at the course that he went ahead and purchased his own private villa. Villa A, the largest of the two styles, has its main living area on the ground floor, overlooking the terrace, pool and the manicured fairways. Villa B, is the opposite layout with its main living area, and pool, on the top level. This gives the resident a high vantage of the course and the coming event. However, these luxury properties are not reserved for the rich and famous with a large amount of interest now

coming from Bangkok residents, looking for their weekend golfing getaway. Now only a short two hour drive from the big city, Bangkokians are finding Black Mountain is certainly suited to their tastes and being accustomed to a certain level of quality and style, these astute investors are liking what they see. With such major leaps forward for Black Mountain and golf in Hua Hin in the past 3 years, it will be very interesting to see how Black Mountain can continue to wow the public in such dramatic ways, but knowing what they have achieved, one can only be eagerly awaiting more. Imagine the scene: your plane lands, you encounter no queue at security, walk straight to a waiting car and within minutes are on the tee of your dream golf course relaxed and ready to go. Now picture those golfers flying commercially: barely off the plane and yet to collect their clubs at the carousel (hoping the airline did in fact load them) ... a few shots behind and they haven’t even started their game. The past 18 months has again seen a rash of headlines involving lost luggage, endless delays and lax security. The fiascos at Heathrow and beyond have reinforced the view of many that flying is a tiresome means to an end, to be endured as your patience is tried. However, increasing numbers of frequent fliers barely see the inside of an airport at all. In spite of the current economic downturn, interest in private jet travel is still high – particularly for NetJets Europe with its fractional ownership model. When you fly with NetJets Europe, you’re able to control the costs of private travel to what you need, gain access to an aircraft wherever you are, and flex your requirements to additional jets if needed, all on short notice. You’re also assured that your pilots and aircrew are the best trained in the world, and the headache of aircraft maintenance and the associated logistics are left to the experts. Warren Buffett backed NetJets Europe, the largest business jet company in Europe, is the only provider capable of delivering on this promise. With 165 aircraft NetJets operates four times as many aircraft as the next largest business operator.

plane every detail is perfectly aligned to their needs. On board every flight is a satellite phone, the customer’s favourite drinks and meals, the customer’s favourite magazines and newspapers, a world-class selection of music and films, and the peace and quiet necessary for the customer to sit back and relax, or bring out the laptop and get some work done. Flying privately gives you freedom. As well as allowing you to decide when to fly, it lets you explore areas that perhaps may not be as accessible by commercial aviation and buys you valuable time to visit more destinations over the course of your trip. Your own plane means you can even fly directly to civil airfields near the course, which are not always close to major commercial airports. It is therefore not surprising that many keen golfers choose to fly with NetJets Europe, including a number of professionals. NetJets Europe flies to over 5,000 airports worldwide and close to 1000 in Europe which means a huge variety of courses are readily accessible – NetJets’ clients can choose to soak up the sun on one of Dubai’s luxurious courses or brave the

Tiger Woods, himself a NetJets owner, has been reported as saying that private jets have become the only sensible form of transport for top golfers due to the attention they attract. Flying with NetJets Europe allows you to travel on your own schedule, rather than on an airline’s inflexible timetable. With availability guaranteed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you can take advantage of a sudden opening in your schedule or spell of good weather to enjoy a spontaneous weekend on the fairway. In our fast-paced society, time has become a valuable commodity as we try to fulfil both our commitments and passions. Counting many of Europe’s prominent business leaders as its clients, NetJets Europe is more aware than most of this, which is why they regard the NetJets’ Private Jet Card as more of a productivity tool than a luxury. The NetJets Europe experience begins with the customer: how the customer conducts his/her affairs, how they like to travel, what language they are comfortable speaking. NetJets Europe ensures that it understands as much about the customer’s requirements as possible so that when they get to the

For those golfers who like to watch and learn from the pros, flying privately can also be a great way of cutting the queue when it comes to watching the big tournaments. Unlike flying on a chartered commercial flight, there’s effectively no limit to the number of flights or seats available so you won’t ever have to worry about flights being booked out; with NetJets you can make the decision to fly eight hours before tee off. Tiger Woods, himself a NetJets owner, has been reported as saying that private jets have become the only sensible form of transport for top golfers due to the attention they attract. Professional golfers know how important the pre-match environment is to their performance. The need to eliminate stress and distractions partly explains the popularity of private jets on the golfing circuit. Moreover, top golfers frequently travel to more than twenty tournaments in a year. is often the only way they can get home the same day to see their family. NetJets Europe has a long standing relationship with the world of golf. Besides a number of top golfers, many of its clientele enjoy a regular game. And it’s not just pleasure, many a business deal has been discussed over the golf course and golfing weekends are enduringly popular among corporate clients. The event, held at La Moye Golf Club, St Brelade, saw amateur golfers fly from Bulgaria, Dublin and London to test their skills against one of Europe’s biggest stars. The Clinic was just one of a series of client events to which NetJets Europe’s owners have been invited and a session with Swedish star Annika Sorenstam also proved a big hit.

NetJets Europe is transforming air travel the same way as Tiger Woods has transformed golf. Its pioneering fractional approach allows individuals and companies the opportunity to buy as much, or as little, of an aircraft as they like without the responsibility of its upkeep. With NetJets Europe you can buy your own share of private jet for 1/16th of the price, which entitles you to 50 hours of flying time per year. The Private Jet Card and Corporate Jet Card involve even less commitment, allowing customers to buy a block of 25 hours occupied flight time with one simple payment. Prices start at €131,000 and include the cost of carbon-offsetting which was made mandatory for all new customers in 2007. As Europe’s largest private jet company, NetJets Europe believes it should display the same leadership with regards to the environment. As a result, the company is on target to become completely carbon neutral by 2012. 50

Barnbougle Dunes

The Bermuda triangle, a powerful, alluring location where mysterious events occur that cannot be explained or justified with human reason. Where do those aeroplanes and ships disappear to? Is there something about the Bermuda that draws them in, a magnetic force that is too strong to contend with? Or perhaps the secret to the Bermuda is a place so wonderful that no one ever really wants to leave? Far from the Bermuda, on an Island called Tasmania, 50 minutes flight south of Melbourne there is another magnetic force at work. Barnbougle Dunes, the pure links course on the state’s NE coast is far from a black hole. Though Barnbougle does appear to possess a certain unexplained magnetism; attracting local, national and international golfers to the Island in droves. There is a mixture of emotions at Barnbougle Dunes. A sense of calm as golfers adjust to the relaxed pace of “Tassie time” intertwined with the excitement of the challenges that lay embedded in the sand dunes turned golfing haven. Crafted from the natural undulation of the coastal dunes, course designers Tom Doak and Mike Clayton have created a golfing masterpiece. Offering a new and exciting challenge at each tee, it is not surprising that golfers become addicted to the course. Rolling fairways and undulating greens carved out of the elusive marram grass beckon, enticing golfers of all standards to experience true links golf. Described by PGA golfer Geoff Ogilvy as “Absolutely stunning”; the natural beauty of Barnbougle is only enhanced by the clever craftsmanship of Doak and Clayton who have created a diverse layout of exciting holes. Ogilvy agrees claiming Barnbougle is “not only one of Australia’s best (golf courses), it’s one of the best courses in the world – old or new. “ The Barnbougle team claim that the course doesn’t have a particular “signature” hole, and in reality at least 8 of the 18 holes are outstanding pieces of golfing architecture. Ultimately everyone has personal favourites, though if there is one hole at Barnbougle Dunes that many golfers remember with true affection it would be the 7th. 54

The quirky 7th, nicknamed “Tom’s little devil” is a 112m par three that demands a precise shot onto the tiny upturned green. On a calm day you could literal throw your ball onto the green. However when the prevailing north westerly raises its head a middle iron punched low into the wind may be the best way to defend against a bounce into the deep bunker to the left or a slide down the steep bank behind the green. To select one hole as outstanding is a difficult, nay near impossible task. Moving as little earth as possible, Doak has vigilantly crafted each hole from the natural canvas that Mother Nature provided. “The bulldozer is our last option” says Doak whose minimalistic approach is also evident in the widely acclaimed Pacific Dunes, in Bandon Oregon and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand. “The key is to provide the impression that the course would almost appear naturally if man had not intruded and dramatically changed the terrain, almost.” Undoubtedly, Doak’s approach has been the right one. Ranked number 1 public access course in Australia, 35 in the world by U.S golf magazine and achieve streams of shining accolades including Forbes magazine “Golf destinations”, Best tourism initiative by the Australian Hotels Association and inclusion in the list of “World’s greatest Golf Courses” by Golf World UK. Perhaps it’s the rolling fairways, a luscious green between the spires of ominous marram that draw golfers to Barnbougle. Perhaps it is the exciting, undulating greens which command every ounce of tactical creativity of your short game. Perhaps it’s the wild and dramatic natural beauty of the course and its surrounds or the challenge of playing the course in the wind, rain or shine. Whatever the reason, looking out over the expanse of Bass Strait while taking in the vivid red, yellows and pinks of the sunset on the deck of the clubhouse, it’s easy to understand the hype around Barnbougle Dunes. Even in this remote location there is no doubt Barnbougle will continue to draw in golfers from around the world to experience golf in its purest form.

Accommodation Barnbougle Dunes provides accommodation facilities onsite in the form of the cute two bedroom cabins or for those who prefer a little more room, chic spacious villas. The 22 two-bedroom cabins, a 2 minute stroll from the clubhouse and first tee can accommodate a maximum of four guests. Fully equip with a bathroom, television, air conditioning/heating, tea and coffee making facilities, the cabins also boast spectacular views of Bass Strait. Nestled discretely between the dunes the elegant four bedroom villas offer breathtaking panoramic views of the course and coastline. Ideal for groups of up to four couples travelling together, each villa contains four bedrooms with queen bed and private ensuite. All bedrooms open onto a spacious living area equipped with kitchenette, comfortable lounge suite, laundry facilities and finished with chic classic furnishings. Swing Images With one European Tour win (the Dubai Open) at the young age of 20 and well positioned in the top 25 World Golf Rankings, Rory McIlroy’s future success seems inevitable. But how far he’ll go depends on his dedication and whether he’ll continue to have the cutting edge necessary to not only be one of the greatest golfers ever, but to join a growing list of up and coming talent. Tiger Woods’ success has inspired Rory, along with a new generation of young golfers such as Danny Lee and Anthony Kim who not only have technically sound golf swings but promise to keep golf fans worldwide glued to their TV screens for years to come. For any player to challenge Tiger they are going to have to challenge his swing as well, so we have placed the swing moves of McIlroy side by side with Tiger to compare.

TIGER USES A NIKE DYNO PROTOTYPE DRIVER - 10.5 DEGREE , AND A NIKE ONE TOUR TW BALL Rory uses a Titleist 909D2 - 8.5 degree Driver, and a Titleist Pro V1x Ball Words by PGA Professional Sean Harrison – Photo Sequence - Mark Newcombe - www.visionsingolf.com

Golf fans are always amazed by how far Rory hits the ball off the tee. He is not the largest player on tour at 5-feet10 and 160 pounds, but is a long hitter for his size with an average driving distance of 303.3 yards on the PGA Tour.

1

At Address

Both Rory’s and Tiger’s set-ups are very solid. Both players’ spine angles are close to identical. Rory is bent over slightly more - Tiger is standing a little taller. Like all good players, their legs are slightly flexed (not too bent) and their arms hang relaxed from the shoulders.

Note - If your hips move too early in your back - swing, you will not create the coil between your lower and upper body.

2

The Move-Away

The source of their power is this wide, sweeping move-away from the ball. No early set of the wrists here - they let the weight of the club do the hinging. The club stays outside of his hands and his hips are resisting against the legs.

3

Half Way Back

Rory and Tigers’ right arms start to fold and their wrists continue to hinge the club up on plane. The left arm is comfortably straight, not too tight. They have already made a big shoulder turn (with only around a 20 degree turn of the hips). The right leg is staying flexed to keep the lower half of the body strong and in control.

4

At The Top

The position of both players here has been created by the fundamentals of their set-up and the early moves in the swing. They have rotated the shoulders around the axis of the spine allowing the wrists to hinge and set the club shaft.

Notice the angle set in the right leg of both players (lines). Maintaining the flex in the right knee enables the player to wind up against the right side, creating resistance in the swing. It also serves as a brace and prevents any sway or excess head movement.

58

Rory’s right knee has moved out over his toe line as his right heel is well of the ground as a result of shifting his weight into his left side. This is the point in his swing where everything is speeding up resulting in clubhead speed with the driver of around 118 mph.

5

Starting Down

The club has started to be pulled towards impact, but only because the lower body is shifting and turning back towards the target. You often see a squat position at this part of the swing with good players as they shift their weight back to their leading leg.

6

Half Way Down

The arms and clubshaft are in an ideal position. The shaft pointing at the ball, and the spine has lowered slightly getting ready for impact. Notice the club face is vertical (square).

The clubhead is being pulled back to the ball on a swing plane that matched the shaft angle at address.

59

Rory creates lots of natural speed and swings with no fear - the (grip it and rip it) type of kid. His simple swing thought: Focus on a point 12 inches in front of the ball and swing over it - Hard.

7

60

Pre-Impact

The spine angle is being maintained and the right elbow is moving down and in front of the right hip.

8

Impact

Tiger’s legs continue to move towards the target, his left knee has not completely snapped back at this point. This is definitely an improvement for Tiger. McIlroy has both legs nearly straight with his hips more open. Both impact positions are powerful creating ball speed of around 175 mph.

Both Rory and Tigers torsos have never stopped rotating, and the club has ended up around thier necks, with the right shoulder and club pointing down the target line - sign of acceleration and power.

9

Through Impact

Everything continues to rotate and accelerate through impact as the upper body moves through towards the target with ease. Notice how the butt end of the club is still pointing at the middle of their chests.

10

The Finish

As they were at the address position, Rory and Tiger are perfectly balanced again in their finish.

A simple swing thought for all of you that want a bit more power, note Rory and Tigers belt buckles are aiming around 30 degree’s left of the target.

Stoke Park’s famous 27-hole Championship Parkland Golf Course, designed in 1908 by the greatest course architecture of his generation, Harry Shapland Colt, is one of the finest in the world. It is enjoyed by amateurs, professionals and innumerable celebrities from all over the world. Whether you are a member or visiting as part of a company day out, you will not be disappointed. The Independent on Sunday agrees, ‘Stoke Park Club is one of golf ’s stately treasures.’

69

A luxurious and convenient location for the ultimate golfing retreat

Stoke Park is an award winning course and has received grand accolades such as ‘A Fantastic Golf Course’ by Conde Nast Traveller and ‘Most Stylish Golf Club in Great Britain ’ by The Sunday Times – an added motive to hold a corporate golf day here. Playing lessons with PGA qualified staff, teaching seminars, competitions and even full course hire can create an unforgettable event and ultimately a tremendous corporate golf venue. “Having managed golf events throughout the UK, Stoke Park is one of, if not, the best corporate golfing venue in the the region. The facilities are second to none and the people you deal with at the club are exceptional”, states Paul Hills, Managing Director of Leaderboard. As well as being a challenging and demanding course, you will find it hard not to be stirred by the exquisite views and landscapes of the Club’s Championship course known as Stoke Poges. Over it’s 100 year history the exceptionally high quality of the greens, which have been consistently 70

maintained, are a particular feature of the course. The Club’s true 27-hole course is made up of three 9-hole courses; Colt, Alison and Lane Jackson. Added to this, the facilities are second to none with a 10-bay driving range with all year round grass practise areas, a pitching area with four bunkers, an eighteen hole putting green and indoor video analysis. However, Stoke Park is always looking at ways to improve on their excellence and challenge what the golf course offers. During 2008 the Club continued to develop and improve the condition. From the work that has been done to it, the golf course has now a different look with greater definition of semi-rough and rough. The development of these has put a premium on accuracy and shot selection. The 15th hole has undergone a complete reconstruction with new bunkers and a new tee. The angle from tee to green has changed and with the great options on pin positions it makes play on par three exciting. On the 16th hole the Club has built a new

championship tee, which demands a long fade from the tee. The approach shot to the green offers a completely different challenge with a longer club in the hand. Refurbishment of the course will continue through to next year and winter works for 2009 will see complete renovation of the bunkers and completion of a number of new tees. This will aid in improving the overall playing experience. Situated just seven miles from London Heathrow and 35 minutes from London , this elegant Buckinghamshire venue is the perfect location for corporate, hospitality and individual golf fanatical customers. “The venue is not too far outside London and its near Heathrow, so its very accessible for most of our clients and the facilities are amazing – our customers love it”, says American Airlines, Consumer Marketing Manager Petra Luckman. Stoke Park is more about just a great golf course, it is about the exceptional facilities on offer, the welcoming staff and the ambience created by all. Stoke Park also offers five

star standard hotel accommodation with 28 new bedrooms opened in May 2008, 13 tennis courts, an award winning SPA SPC and gymnasium boasting a SALON SPC and swimming pool, making this the ultimate golfing day or weekend break for leisure or corporate clients. The new 28 bedrooms are in complete contrast to the 21 traditional style rooms that can be found in The Mansion – each offering breath taking views, antique furniture and sumptuous fabric, making each a masterpiece of luxury. “With some attention to creating better definition from the tee and the continued improvement to the quality of the fairways the overall experience is vastly improved. The greens have once again been superb and the feedback received from members and visitors to the club has been very positive. I am sure with the plans in place for winter works we will move forwards once again and can look forward to a great 2010”, says Stuart Collier, Director of Golf. 71

at the movies As a film location, Stoke Park has played host to the most memorable game of golf in cinema history, when James Bond defeated Auric Goldfinger on the 18th green in Goldfinger (1964). Goldfinger was the first of two James Bond films to be shot at Stoke Park, the second being Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) Many TV commercials and product launches have also been organised in the mansion and grounds.

72

The film of the best-selling novel Bridget Jones’s Diary was also shot at Stoke Park in the summer of 2000. Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) takes Bridget (Renée Zellweger) away for a luxury romantic break. After a hilarious afternoon’s rowing, filmed at the club, the couple retire to the Club’s Pennsylvania Suite with its gloriously comfortable four poster bed and exquisite marble bathroom.

In 2004 three movies were released all featuring the Club. Wimbledon, Bride & Prejudice and Layer Cake. Layer Cake’s dramatic ending with Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller was filmed on the mansion steps.

In Goldfinger, Oddjob, one of the most memorable villains in all the Bond movies, throws his steel rimmed bowler hat and cuts of the head of the golf club statue.

TAT FILIPINAS TO HOST FIRST FALDO EVENT IN THE PHILIPPINES TAT Filipinas Golf Club, known for its environmental sustainability and social programmes, will host the inaugural Faldo Series Philippines Championship on October 28-29. Located 30 minutes from Manila in San Pedro, Laguna,TAT Filipinas has implemented a number of ecological initiatives to protect over 90 different species of flora and fauna and cut down water usage. TAT also supports its employees, its caddies and the local community through a number of social programmes. Supported by UBS, Mission Hills and The R&A, many of the country’s most talented young golfers will be competing in the Philippines Championship. Organised by the Junior Golf Foundation of The Philippines, over 100 boys and girls aged 12 to 21 are expected to take part, all hoping to claim a place in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final hosted by six-time Major winner Nick Faldo. Atty. Edna Pana, President of TAT Filipinas, remarked: “It humbles us to be hosting this very prestigious event. Sir Nick Faldo’s contributions to golf are very inspiring and it is certainly a great honour on our part to be involved with the Faldo Series Asia.” Commented Nick Faldo: “The Philippines has produced some great champions in Asia in the past so I hope the Faldo Series can help to identify and nurture several more in the future. I am grateful to TAT Filipinas Golf Club and the Junior Golf Foundation for their support. I wish all the competitors the best of luck and look forward to meeting the winners at the Grand Final.” As part of Faldo’s unique formula to help develop tomorrow’s champions, competitors will experience strict tournament conditions on the course while off the course they will receive expert advice from a guest speaker. Endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Con74

federation, younger children from the local community will also be attending the tournament to receive free coaching and watch the competitors in action, part of Faldo’s drive to simultaneously create access to the sport at a grass-roots level. The Philippines Championship is one of 15 Faldo Series Asia tournaments in 12 different countries during 2009/2010, including four in mainland China plus one in each of Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam. With over 1,000 competitors taking part and many more being introduced to the game, the climax of the season will be the fourth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in March 2010, an R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking event which Faldo will once again host at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China, home of the Faldo Series Asia. As well as spending time with Faldo, over 60 Asian finalists from across the region will compete for five invites to the Faldo Series Grand Final in Brazil plus the opportunity to play in a flagship Asian Tour or Ladies European Tour event for the overall boy and girl champion. Hoping to win a hat-trick of Faldo Series Asia titles this season will be Rashid Khan of India. In March 2009 at Mission Hills, the 18-year-old from Delhi became the first player to successfully defend his Faldo Series Asia crown, replicating European Tour stars Nick Dougherty and Oliver Fisher, both of whom have won back-to-back Faldo Series titles in Europe since its launch in 1996. Anyone wishing to enter the Philippines Championship should contact the Junior Golf Federation of The Philippines via the website at www.jungolffoundation.org. COUNTDOWN BEGINS AS 35,000 FANS REGISTER FOR DUBAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The countdown to the Dubai World Championship has begun with 35,000 fans from all parts of the globe already registered for tickets for the grand finale of The Race to Dubai. Golf legend and designer Greg Norman launched free admission tickets in May during a visit to Dubai to make his finishing touches to the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, which will be played competitively for the very first time at the Dubai World Championship. The showpiece course will play host to the top 60 qualifiers from The Race to Dubai thus ensuring the greatest player field ever seen in the Middle East and the strongest line-up of a sole-sanctioned European Tour event this season. Among

76

those competing will be current Race leader Paul Casey, Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia, three-time Major winner Ernie Els, The Players champion Henrik Stenson, former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, Dubai Desert Classic champion Rory McIlroy, and Colombian sensation Camilio Villegas. Fans can register for free tickets at the official website www.dubaiworldchampionship.com. The website also includes details and sales information on the two hospitality packages that are available, both of which include first-class facilities overlooking the 18th green, and one offering the unique experience of being among the first to play the Earth course following the Dubai World Championship.

The Earth Course

intensive maintenance will ensure that the links of Earth have the look and feel of an established course but conditions more pristine than most professional players will have experienced in their careers. Leisurecorp unveiled the final four holes of Norman’s Earth course in January with stars Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Robert Karlsson previewing ‘the most challenging mile in golf ’, which is set to host

The second of Greg Norman’s two Eco-Signature™ courses, Earth, is inspired by the great parkland courses of Europe and North America. Incorporating lush, garden-like vegetation and traditional fast-flowing water features, Earth’s design will enhance the already picturesque landscape and offer panoramic vistas of the entire course. These natural components also provide differing angles and changing perspectives from each tee. The meandering, and occasionally daunting, water features will be an ever-present factor when lining up the next shot, forcing a careful drive and constant consideration of ball carry. Never before has a course been closed to the public for so long, awaiting its debut. Fully grassed since April 2008, Jumeirah Golf Estates has given Earth an unprecedented two full seasons to mature before the Championship. Until then,

the inaugural Dubai World Championship and culmination to the season-long Race to Dubai from November 19-22, 2009. As designer of both the Fire and Earth courses, the legendary Norman works closely with Leisurecorp and his Dubai-based team from Greg Norman Golf Course Design (GNGCD), closely monitoring the progress of both courses, focusing on the opening in November.

What a year in the Majors The Masters - Kenny Perry was poised to become the oldest Masters champion at 48 until Angel Cabrera beat him in a playoff. US Open - Phil Mickelson was on the verge of finally winning the U.S. Open until Lucas Glover outplayed him over the final few holes. The Open - A 59-year-old Tom Watson had an 8-foot putt to win the Open Championship, then lost in a playoff to Stewart Cink. US PGA - South Korea’s Y.E. Yang makes history as he becomes the first Asian-born player to win a Major and denies the World Number One, Tiger Woods a 15th Major. This could be a big breakthrough for Asian players, especially with a World Golf Championship starting this year in China. World Number 110, Yang - 37, finished at 8-under par collecting $1.35 million, along with a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour and the majors, as well as a place in the Presidents Cup team in October in San Francisco. This is a lot for a player who had to go back to PGA Tour qualifying last December. Asian-born players have come close in the majors previously. Liang-Huan Lu of Taiwan finished one shot behind Lee Trevino at the 1971 British Open and T.C. Chen from Taiwan had a double-hit chip resulting in a quadruple bogey in the final round that cost him a chance at the 1985 U.S. Open, where he was runner-up to Andy North.
