Queen’s College Courtyard Simply enlargening the plans from 1:10 to 1:1 does not provide sufficient or accurate detail Incorrect and/or impractical detailing of flashing. Too many bends for one sheet. Incorrect dimensions of timber. Would be manipulated by builder on site. Timber battens required for steel flashing have been omitted. Mistakes in detail plans often result from inexperienced drafstmen.

Aluminium bi-fold doors, steel fittings. Pre-cast concrete walls ensures rapid erection Pres-cast concrete is a cheap method, however the concrete used in this structure was not of an extremely high aesthetic quality. Release agent was not properly administered. Has since been painted, eliminating this problem. Not a major problem around assigned detail. Has only a minor visual impact on exisiting structure, however creates intimate and useable spaces.

Porch provides shade and protection from harsh sunlight. Allows for no new cooling or heating systems, the new structure appears to manage temperature well. Little use of energy-hungry devices, lighting, or climate management systems thanks to sensible design of courtyard. Little use of recyclable materials. However materials are likey to stand test of time (e.g. aluminium door frames). Oil based paint to exterior. Materials are durable and hard-wearing. Pre-cast panels require transport to site, increasing embodied energy.

Silicone sealant between pre-cast panels ensures weather-seal. Must be adequately applied so as to allow no moisture to enter. Flat roofs have greater tendency to leak. Water shedding is not as great as with a more significant pitch. Box gutters may also leak if not properly installed. However the excessive flashing used is unlikely to allow this. Concrete shrinks as it sets. Minor cracks may reveal themselves in pre-cast panels.
