Transforming ideas We are continually challenged by what constitues a coherent, abstract idea of personal “emotional” space/second skin. This week, our inspirations have been very ‘organic’ and ‘freeform’ compared to the more literal, constructed concepts that we had presented in previous weeks. The real question was; how can a ‘blob’ be representative of our concept? What makes our ‘blob’ distinct from any other?

Conceptual thinking If emotions are invisible, then why can’t our ‘control centre’ be similarly hidden? The aim is for the audience not to grasp our concept of ‘control’ until they see it in action. As such, our model does not appear to have a centre of control, but rather functions as a united whole. Principally, a broader, more obvious body is the centre of the model - that in itself represents movement and emotional fluctuation.

“Peeling back the layers” We know that whilst someone may appear composed and stable on the outside, they may be potentialled ‘jagged’ underneath. As such, by contrasting the smooth forms of the model’s exterioir with a sharp, angled ‘cutout’, this juxtaposition is physically represented.

Dynamic and emotive One might notice the strange curvature of the 3D model. We challenged ourselves to let go of our limitations and simply construct what felt ‘right’. Some faces of the model appear to converge, other seem to diverge - in a way a metaphor for the way people might act when confronted. Depending on the situation, the angle at which another person approaches, and the general way someone feels; the response to the circumstances will alter. Similarly, skins may be ‘peeled back’ or ‘regrown’ as needed.

Going forward... We are still confronted by the idea of movement within our model. How the system might correspond to the form of the model is something that requires continual thought. We remain challenged by how to integrate the two systems in a coherent manner so that they blend as one.
