As a painter uses a brush to create form stroke by stroke, Nicky Broekhuysen’s work is made up of thousands of 1s and 0s hand-stamped individually onto the paper to create a larger image. the 1s and 0s are the building blocks of both form and meaning in all of Broekhuysen’s work; a simple system of information storage and memory, the binary numbers act as a condensed language, a metaphor that speaks of who we are, the connectedness of things and the potential of, and for, change. Broekhuysen has had exhibitions on four continents, including a solo exhibition at Davidson Contemporary and the Bumiller Collection in 2016.

Torkwase Dyson’s paintings are measured compositions that consider spatial habitation and movement particularly as they challenge and engage through their material and formal rigor. Dyson approaches abstract painting as a means to examine the spatial negotiation of built and natural environments. Drawing on historical black narratives from the last 400 years, Dyson’s abstractions are formally minimal but rife with socio-political meaning and symbolism. Dyson will have her first solo show with Davidson Contemporary in February 2018 to coincide with her exhibition at the Drawing Center, NY, as well as a group show at the Whitney Museum.

There is no escaping the obvious when first encountering Darren Lago’s work, however, as is the case with all of Lago’s work, there is much more than meets the eye. The layers of art history, social context, wordplay, and irony are denser than the tactile heftiness of his sculptures’ handmade resin. Lago has had three solo exhibitions with Davidson Contemporary, and will have his fourth in May 2018.

JP Roy’s paintings depict scenes that meld the mythological with the fantastical and the surreal. Each picture draws from personal experience, but admits that human senses are an incomplete and flawed way to access the world. Roy’s hyper-realistic style is steeped in art historical reference; they are autobiographical and figurative without being portraiture He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the US and Europe and has had solo museum exhibitions at the Torrence Museum of Art in Los Angeles and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, New American Paintings, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Stranger, Hi-Fructose and many other publications. Boo Saville’s paintings feature a combination of color abstraction and monochrome figuration, seamlessly intertwining the emotional internal realm and the tangible external world. They are divergent models of aesthetic exploration, polar opposites or simultaneous opposites in which the divide between life and how we perceive it becomes manifest. Saville has had one solo exhibition with Davidson Contemporary; she has also shown in Paris, London, Milan, Toronto, and Hong Kong.

Thomas Witte uses images from found 35mm slides to create his hand-cut paper works. Witte selects photographs which put viewers in the position of sightseer or voyeur, creating a connection between the act of viewing art and viewing life. This juxtaposition presents a sublime discrepancy in the way in which we, as removed art-viewers, take meaning from the images. Witte has had two one-man exhibitions at Davidson Contemporary, as well as a solo booth at Pulse New York 2014.
