Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, I am thrilled to be launching this, our very first issue of GURHAN Magazine, a magazine dedicated to everything GURHAN! Read it to learn more about Gurhan the designer, GURHAN the brand, GURHAN jewelry, and the GURHAN woman and style. This magazine is all the more special for the fact that it represents the embodiment of a goal that Gurhan and I have shared for a long time now. That goal is to transport the perception of precious jewelry from the realm of the esoterically fine and rarified into the realm of fashion and style. There is no question that fine jewelry is a valuable heirloom to be treasured. But there is no reason why it should not also be at the center of a woman's wardrobe and there is no reason why it cannot also be the perfect accompaniment to the latest season’s clothes, bags, sunglasses and shoes, as the next fashion “must have”. I cannot think of a better way to present this marriage between fine and fashion, heirloom and hot, precious and precocious, than through a high quality magazine which is style driven as well as full of rich and interesting content. In our magazine you'll find riveting articles on how Gurhan first found his vocation as a jewelry designer, insights into Gurhan's obsession with unusual metals, the inside scoop on our fairytale romance, the magic behind the GURHAN brand success, the secret features of GURHAN jewelry, the transformational effect of the jewelry on the woman who wears it, its versatility, individuality and inspirations. You'll also get a peek into Gurhan's personal life with me and our little Tipsy and how it inspires his work and his jewelry. This magazine is designed to be a keepsake. Don't just read it once! Keep it on your counter or coffee table, for your staff, friends and customers to enjoy and reference. It is a treasure trove of GURHAN information that will endure for a long time to come. We hope you enjoy this special celebration of Gurhan, the man that I love, and GURHAN, the jewelry that you love! Fiona Tilley President & Co-Owner, GURHAN

Duvall O'Steen Director, Jewelry PR & Promotion World Gold Council New York, NY “I've been a fan of GURHAN jewelry for over ten years now. When I think of truly great gold designers, Gurhan is always at the top of my list. Let's face it Gurhan brought 24K gold to the US! Gurhan has an independent aesthetic which allows him to create truly original designs that set the trends, as opposed to following them. If “a thing of beauty is a joy forever”, then I am certain to always be joyful when wearing my favorite GURHAN gold pieces!”

Claire Gladstone Jewelry Specialist Mitchells Westport, CT “What can I say……I love GURHAN!!!! It is beautiful, luxurious, rich and textural. Dressy or casual, I love to wear it as much as I love to sell it. My first GURHAN purchase was the Willow Chandelier earrings. They make me feel beautiful every time I put them on. Next, a scarab necklace….again, magic! I have a variety of GURHAN bangles that I mix and match with old favorites.”

Helena Krodel Director of Media & Special Events Jewelers of America New York, NY “Walking into a GURHAN booth at a trade show is like walking into a dreamy history lesson where jewelry treasures, the love and warmth of Gurhan himself, and champagne await! Gurhan is one of the living masters of our time, creating jewelry that is perfectly imperfect. One can only imagine Gurhan at his bench crafting these wonderful pieces that take on a life and personality of their own. The precious metals treatments and gemstones Gurhan uses are like no other. They are gifts not only to the fine jewelry industry but also to history itself.”

“I met Gurhan and Fiona at their first show in NY and loved the originality and ancient look of the jewellery. I was the first person to stock GURHAN in the UK and it is great to see how the company has grown to become one of the top US jewellery brands. This is due to Gurhan's prolific design output and the hard work of his team. “

“For many years, Packard's on the Plaza has been known as the “Trusted Source” for the ability to offer our clients fine handmade jewelry crafted by local artisans. When GURHAN became a part of our jewelry assortment in 2001, I found that it was a perfect addition to our current assortments and offered a more diverse collection of fine jewelry. GURHAN has been and will continue to be our primary focus for designer jewelry.”

Pam Levine President, Levine Design Group New York, NY Perfecting the Art of Luxury Branding® “Gurhan's jewelry becomes an extension of the wearer, as if it was born on the body. I own a number of GURHAN pieces and always get compliments (and noticed) when wearing it. The jewelry speaks of elegance, taste, richness, sophistication, and exemplifies one's appreciation of beauty.”

Jo Ellen Harrison Director The Harrison Gallery Williamstown, MA “At the Harrison Gallery, we consider Gurhan’s designs to be fine art. Of the 40 artists we represent, painters, sculptures, potters, and jewelers, Gurhan is one of our top 5 most successful artists. The new line of silver is a wonderful addition to the GURHAN collection. The silver pieces are bold and unique, and offer the same texture and quality expected of GURHAN. The company is creative and versatile, and offers a full line of support in terms of marketing and internet promotion. Service in selection, custom orders, and repairs is excellent. A small company attitude throughout its growth, but with big company success. As an independent dealer, we are treated as an important partner, and have been provided with the same level of attention and service as the larger, national retail organizations.”

Cindy Edelstein Jeweler's Resource Bureau New York, NY “Gurhan’s designs are perfect - from the most simple to the most complex, his eye for detail and balance is impeccable. He has introduced me to ancient mosaics, enticed me into black diamonds, lured me into dark silver, delighted me with carved lavastone and much more. As a collector, fan and business associate it has been a privilege to watch him grow - from 24k to platinum and then to silver every new collection offers new ways to delight the senses. His kindness, compassion and sense of humor are as boundless as his talent and energies. What a joy to know him and his dynamic wife and partner -and a joy to own his work."

Dan Schuyler Owner Lily & Co. Sanibel Island, FL “We are blessed to have the Gurhan family as partners at Lily & Co. Over the years we have established a great customer following and featured several trunks shows.”

Janet Goldman Owner Fragments New York, NY “Gurhan is the master of 24K gold. He is as warm and inspiring as his impeccable craftsmanship. His unique designs are timeless, his connection to the stones instinctive, and his talent sees no boundaries. This is jewelry to enjoy for a lifetime.”

Cathy Eastham Owner Cathy Eastham Fine Jewelry Midland, TX “The sheer delight of wearing GURHAN makes a lady feel glamorous, and always brings second glances, and who doesn't love that feeling! Working with Gurhan and his associates is such a pleasure; they are so professional and accommodating. My staff has to watch me closely because I want to take it all home with me, I personally wear this fabulous jewelry all the time.”

Patti and John Cogswell Co-Owners The Squash Blossom Vail, CO “The Squash Blossom and Gurhan's outrageous displays of 24-karat gold and vibrant colored jewels are a long story… It was 1997 when Gurhan had his first showing in Vail Colorado with the Squash Blossom. Gurhan's superb craftsmanship, unique designs, and boldness made him a perfect fit as their premier jeweler. Vail's sophisticated and knowledgeable clientele appreciate his distinct style in creating pieces that are wearable day into evening. The best part of the story is the wonderful relationship we have developed with Gurhan and his wife Fiona. They are both exciting and extraordinarily personable. The Squash Blossom is always thrilled when they come to Vail for a personal appearance. We are excited for them to join us always.”

Amanda Gizzi Director of Communications Jewelers of America New York, NY “Why do I love GURHAN? What is not to love? Gurhan as a designer is passionate, charming, talented and innovative. Moreover, GURHAN jewelry makes women radiant. The moment they put on a pair of earrings or clasp a necklace or bracelet they have a glow that comes from the inside, out. Whether in 24 karat gold, pure and precious platinum, or silver, a piece of GURHAN jewelry is an heirloom which any woman

Diverse Mind,

Diverse Designs

The story of Gurhan Orhan’s rise to become one of the most well-known and successful jewelry designers in the world combines the elements of a fairy-tale, an epic, a do-ityourself manual, and even has a dose of a good romance novel. It’s no accident that he has had an offer to create a film based on his life!

G

urhan is not just a designer of beautiful jewelry. He is a renaissance man whose curious and diverse mind led him down many paths before discovering his life's true vocation. Gurhan studied mathematics and business at University but his passion for music, his talent with his hands, and his creativity emerged as the driving factors in his subsequent career directions. His early start hand-making custom highfidelity sound systems led him into the nightlife and entertainment world. He started up one of the earliest nightclubs in his home city of Ankara, built a rock bar (the dj unit was an old VW kombi van parked in the middle of the bar!), and launched several restaurants in Ankara and Istanbul. One look at Gurhan, with his distinctive bald head, famous earring, straggly ponytail and charismatic demeanor, and it is easy to see how this designer might have been so comfortable in the glamorous world of the night! In the early 80s he moved to Switzerland where his passion for assembling and dissembling things - a skill despaired of by his mother who would often find the household electronic equipment in pieces on the floor when he was a child - found its natural home in watch making. Gurhan's watches were no ordinary watches: he restored old pocket watches and breathed new life into them by re-crafting them into art-pieces for the wrist. He would take the random components - hands from one, face from another, dial from another, and casing from yet

12

another - and hand-sew leather straps for them. Several exhibitions in Europe and Istanbul recognized this early expression of his talent for making meaningful collector items. The seeds of his later jewelry life seem to have been born in these timepieces. At 40 years old, a chance encounter with a small sheet of 24k gold in Istanbul's famous Grand Bazaar changed the course of Gurhan's life. As he touched the sheet of pure gold, its warmth and sensuality seduced him… “What the heck is this?!” he exclaimed, amazed by the softness and strength of the metal.

He would take the random components - hands from one, face from another, dial from another, and casing from yet

another - and hand-sew leather straps for them. But it was the challenge of working with the metal that really aroused his interest. He was impervious to the goldsmiths in the Grand Bazaar who laughed at him when he said he wanted to work in the metal and make jewelry - too soft! too heavy! too expensive! too difficult! But always the contrarian, Gurhan took this as an even sweeter challenge and immediately embraced it. A short few years later he had translated this pure, precious metal into the unique designs that are known eponymously as GURHAN, and launched them into the international market.

What's in a Brand? 7

Page 1

What’s in a brand? Yin and Yang… There was a time when Gurhan envisaged making a few of his special pieces, selling them to his few wealthy collectors, and sitting on a beach enjoying the relative leisure of his mid-life years… then he met a woman travelling through Turkey who fell in love with both him and his jewelry and who had a different vision for his future. Jewelry lovers around the world now celebrate the moment when Fiona met Gurhan and transported his vision from quiet semi-retirement into one of a global brand.

Today, Gurhan is not just the name of a humble designer and self-made goldsmith, but that of an internationally famous jewelry brand that has established its place as a leader in the world of luxury. But what brought the brand to this level? Ask Fiona and Gurhan and the answer is immediate: “alchemy”! It was a magic combination: the artistry of design and the business acumen to transport that great design into something that a consumer recognizes and values. This magic was achieved with the yin Fiona brought to Gurhan's yang! They represent the perfect couple - cool, casual and confident… and wonderfully in love notwithstanding the normal challenges of living and working together. But the real success of the GURHAN brand lies in the unique combination of talents that they each bring to their business partnership. He soars, she channels. On the one hand, Gurhan's creative genius and diffuse imaginative dimensions, which have propelled the brand to incredible heights, are highly valued by Fiona who studied art at school and who has herself dabbled in creative endeavors. On the other hand, Fiona's past careers as an attorney and then as an investment banker on Wall Street provide the commercial focus and direction for the company, while Gurhan's business studies at University enable him to recognize the value of her contribution to the brand's success.

…and a little help from your friends. But if one were to suggest that the GURHAN achievement is just about the two of them, they would loudly protest. For both of them firmly recognize the value of the dedicated team which has helped them build the brand to what it is today. Gurhan's artisans have been trained and groomed by him from his early beginnings in Istanbul. He is as proud of them as he would be of his own children. And they reward his appreciation with the nominative “abi” or “older, respected brother”. The managers and staff in every other aspect of the business are the epitome of loyal team workers and their value to the brand is extolled by Fiona and Gurhan at every instant. As Fiona has said, “there is not a day that I don't learn something from one of our guys.” The collaborative management style that Fiona has implemented in the company echoes the lessons of GE's Jack Welch, and it is to this that they attribute the culture of exceeding expectations and customer needs. Not a day passes that they don't ask, “What did we do right and how can we transfer that lesson to other areas in the company, and what did we do wrong and how can we fix it?” Let's hope they don't fix what isn't broken!

Ancient Inspirations

The Museum and Byzantine Collections feature ancient bronze pieces and coins, which hail from up to 5,000 years ago. The bronze pieces represent elements of daily life from that time period. Some of the pieces were used to hold the fabric together like a pin or a brooch. Others adorned soldiers’ uniforms or decorated horses' harnesses. These two collections are especially close to Gurhan's heart and come from a much broader group of bronze antiquities in Gurhan's personal collection.

Transformation:

You and GURHAN - The Story Never Ends When Gurhan's wife, the co-founder of the now-famous GURHAN jewelry company, first saw Gurhan's jewelry, she changed. His jewelry touched her. Deeply. Personally. And she felt more special as she put on each new piece. Fiona is not alone in experiencing such a profound effect as a result of seeing, feeling, wearing GURHAN jewelry. Long after Fiona had surrendered to the power of Gurhan and his jewelry, they decided to investigate what was going on and what it was about GURHAN jewelry that affected all of their customers in the same way. Why was this very yellow, hand hewn, unusual jewelry such a success? And how could they be sure it would stick? They hired branding consultants who studied these very questions. The result of these focus groups and market inquiries was the discovery that GURHAN jewelry really “transforms” a woman. Women were responding to GURHAN not only because it looked wonderful in the showcase but because once it was held in her hands it felt wonderful and once it was put on her body she felt wonderful. It was discovered that at the same time as the jewelry became more wonderful once it was put onto a woman’s body, a woman felt more wonderful once she put it on.

In the beginning is the image of a woman. And from this image flows another: a design for jewelry that will awaken her potential for legendary beauty. In the hands of Gurhan, image becomes reality, transmuted into jewelry of extraordinary originiality and workmanship, finding its way into the hands of the woman who inspired it. Who was meant to wear it. Gurhan makes jewelry to seduce her senses, revealing its secrets in every detail. The graceful curve of the clasp. The texture of metal wrought by hand. The supple flow of chain. The tiny, almost hidden signature tag. The unique identity of every piece. All created for the pleasure of hismuse and the expression of her being.Jewelry that can transform a woman even as she transforms the jewelry. Created by an artist and visionary to span all the stories of her life. Romance. Sensuality. Intellect. Play. Now and forever. GURHAN acknowledges the brand consulting provided by Pam Levine (Levine Design Group) and Jim Feldman (Jim Feldman Creative Direction).

Cocktail Party Picnic in the Park

Business Lunch For a business lunch, go classic with a graduated ball necklace and drop ball earrings. But keep it interesting by adding a punch of color with a one-of-a-kind opal ring.

58

Even though you're keeping it casual with jeans and flats for a picnic in the park, add dimension to your look with multiple strands of pure silver and pure gold flake necklaces. Add some fun with stacks of thin bangles in different colors.

For an evening out, raise the drama quotient with a five strand black diamond scarf necklace. For high drama, add stunning black diamond earrings but keep the look from going overboard with a simple spring ring.

Black Tie

Be fun and flirty by mixing a single pendant necklace with a long single strand necklace. The combination of textures and mixing black and white diamonds create a unique look. Top it off with pave diamond earrings and you are ready to party!

The Difference is in the Detail

I

f you look closely at a piece of

GURHAN jewelry, you will notice a tiny set of characters, a combination of numbers and letters engraved into the metal. The discrete set of characters on the inside of a ring band or at the clasp of the necklace, holds a world of knowledge with its unique combination. Every GURHAN piece that has ever been produced receives its own individual item number, which is engraved onto the piece so that it can be individually identified at any time. With this unique number, any transaction for that piece, whether it has been sent out to a stylist for a celebrity, sent for editorial or sold to a retailer, can be attributed to the individual piece. It is also a significant message directly to the customer. This unique item is hers and hers alone; identified by its very own item number. The engraved item number is a distinctive point of difference for GURHAN, as well as serving as the guarantee that you have an authentic GURHAN piece. 61

Home is Where the Heart is‌

Bright Lights, Big City

To step into Gurhan and Fiona's home is to step into a museum. The beautiful apartment in the midst of the West Village in New York City is filled with treasures the couple has collected from their many travels. Whether it is a grandiose Buddha or a wall full of framed Sultan miniatures or micro mosaic boxes, their home has a myriad of intriguing treasures. Each visit unfolds another item to behold. Their home mirrors Gurhan's collections, which feature a diverse assortment of designs with a bevy of influences.

The energy of New York City, where Gurhan shares a home with his wife Fiona, as well as the corporate offices of his global business, vibrates through Gurhan's designs. The contrast of the warmth of pure 24 karat gold and the cool tones of pure silver parallel the contrast of the heat and energy of the city and the backdrop of cool culture.

Istanbul, a Crossroad

Urban Oasis

The city of Istanbul, with its history as the capitol of the great Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, is imbued with a vast sense of history. Against a backdrop of grand mosques and remnants of fortresses, an energetic modern city has developed. Fiona and Gurhan's Istanbul apartment overlooks the legendary Bosphorous with its busy sea traffic. Like the city's unique blend of history with modern sensibilities, Gurhan's designs are steeped in history but have a modern twist.

The private roof atop of Gurhan and Fiona's West Village apartment has been transformed into a personal garden oasis in the midst of bustling New York City. With this garden hideaway, Gurhan is able to relax and let his surroundings influence his designs. The Willow collection, with the combination of leaf-like flakes, subtly echoes the gorgeous foliage of the rooftop garden.

Ancience from Afghanistan

Mongolian Memories

Gurhan was commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and National Geographic (exclusively authorized by the government of Afghanistan) to create a collection of 24 karat gold jewelry in commemoration of the exhibition, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. Gurhan was selected because he is renowned as the pioneer in the revival of 24K gold jewelry and in recognition of his achievement in reincarnating the techniques of the ancient goldsmiths in pure gold. The treasures featured in this extraordinary exhibit include pieces from the same periods which originally inspired Gurhan himself to become a jeweler. The techniques used in these original pieces are the very methods Gurhan studied, and the creators of these ancient treasures were the mentors he emulated as he established his own place in history. Gurhan has always been considered a man who is a unique combination of both Eastern and Western cultures and who embodies our diverse society. Pairing this with his special position in the timeline of world jewelry, he was the obvious choice to collaborate on this project.

Gurhan's Gobi Collection is a bold expression of the vast wilderness of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. The plains of textured Chinese turquoise in this Collection evoke for Gurhan memories of the magnificent trip that Gurhan and Fiona took to Mongolia. Sleeping in gers (Mongolian tents), travelling by camel, horse and digging their van out of relentless dunes, they had the adventure of a lifetime. Most specially, Gurhan discovered that his first name was that of one of Genghis Khan's right hand men and that a river in Mongolia carried his last name. His descent from the Mongols, who pushed their empire westward into Turkey back in 1206, completes yet another colorful piece of Gurhan's life puzzle.

Gem of Jordan

Treasures from Tunisia

The fairytale beauty of Queen Rania of Jordan is matched only by the fairytale majesty of the land over which she and her husband, King Abdullah, reign. The Queen has long been a fan of GURHAN jewelry, her favorites being the sparkling black and white diamond briolette styles. Gurhan and Fiona visited Jordan recently to experience the exotic beauty of the land and to tap its ancient inspirations. The Office of the Queen extended its inimitable hospitality and offered Gurhan and Fiona the royal driver and inside tips as to the best places to dine and explore. The highlights of the trip were a tour of Jaresh, the City of Columns; a stop by the Dead Sea to take in the benefits of the saline treatments; and of course a visit to the famous site of Petra. The delicious food and friendly Jordanians capped off the fabulous trip

One of Gurhan's most beloved and enduring collections is the Phoenician Collection, named for the rare ancient Phoenician glass beads that it features. Always fascinated by the glorious history of this crossroad civilization that was home to the early Phoenicians, Gurhan and Fiona travelled for an exhaustive two week tour of the entire country. They traversed the territory from north to south, from its borders at the southeast with Libya to the west with Algeria. They even took in the desert site where Star Wars was filmed! With or without Hannibal's elephants, Tunisia was a raw and challenging experience. Most rewarding was the opportunity to see the magnificent Roman Empire mosaics which were the forerunners of the mosaic culture in Italy that inspired Gurhan's Mosaic Collection.

A successful career on Wall Street, her own financial services company off Wall Street for over 10 years, a gorgeous husband, 2 adorable kids… and an ever-growing collection of GURHAN jewelry. Her love affair with GURHAN began with her initial purchase of his original signature lariat necklace, which has adorned her every outfit both in and out of work. Her then fiancé, Peter, surprised Suzanne with a custom GURHAN engagement ring. And for her big day, while Suzanne may have married Peter, she chose GURHAN for her wedding in every other way! She wrapped an 85 inch GURHAN necklace of fine gold beads and pearls around her neck 7 times to create a stunning choker (now often worn as a long double-wrapped necklace or a belt) and they gave each other GURHAN 24k gold wedding bands. Peter wore GURHAN cufflinks, and she gave GURHAN to her bridal party as gifts! Peter continued the GURHAN tradition, celebrating the birth of each of their children, with a custom addition to the collection. Suzanne’s love affair with GURHAN has endured right alongside her marriage with Peter and for every special occasion Peter makes sure that a piece of GURHAN is part of it!

ew would dispute that Gurhan is one of the most distinctive voices in the jewelry world today. His almost defiant desire to conquer challenges has led him to create jewelry in the most unlikely of metals. To each of those metals he has brought his own distinctive signature.

Of course, everyone knows that Gurhan is synonymous

will hold a permanent place in the GURHAN line. “What next?” one might ask… Gurhan has already anticipated our expectation of more from the trove of his imagination. The latest addition to Gurhan's stable of unusual metals is his 4/24 Line. Launched in 2010, this line combines the rich luster of 24 karat gold with the structural strength and delicious chocolaty tones of 4 karat gold.

4/24 It addresses Gurhan's desire

to

tackle the delicate and precise setting of diamonds in his creations and thereby gives him the ability to explore new sensibilities in his designs. The inaugural Collection in this line, Capitone, echoes the luscious tufts of Victorian boudoir furniture and provokes images of finery, decadence, and romance. By augmenting his 24 karat gold designs with this new 4 karat exo-skeleton, Gurhan can set the tiniest of diamonds and achieve a more elevated delicacy in his designs. Once again, we must ask “What next?”… and only one thing is sure… it will be something magnificent that will not only delight today's customer but will enchant generations to come with his creative brilliance.

F

rom the first look, it is apparent that GURHAN jewelry is not machinemade, but is lovingly crafted by hand. Not just finished by hand, but painstakingly created from scratch by hand. You can see it in the imperfections, the fact that no two pieces are alike, the marks of hand-hammering - Gurhan's fingerprints are directly on each piece. Gurhan takes pride in the purity of his vision and craft, and ensures that this vision is evident in each individual piece. Every step of the process to create a piece of jewelry is carefully managed by Gurhan. The process begins with Gurhan himself. Every design is created by him: he does not employ any other designers. All of Gurhan's gold designs are handcrafted in his own workshop: nothing is outsourced not polishing, not finishing, not stone setting. Gurhan chooses his artisans specifically because of their lack of previous jewelry experience, so that they can be schooled only in Gurhan's distinctive techniques without the ‘taint’ of modern methods. Only with such control, diligence and care can Gurhan preserve his unique creativity and outstanding quality.

Gurhan Timeline 2

1:52 PM

Page 1

Gurhan Timeline: The Story of GURHAN Through the Years 1954

1970’s

1980’s

Late 1980’s

Early 1990’s

Gurhan Orhan was born in 1954 in Ankara, Turkey. As a precocious child, Gurhan was notorious for his love of tinkering. His mother tells the story that anything electronic would be in pieces all over the floor just for his pleasure to put it all back together again. His love of a challenge as a child foreshadows his later desire to conquer pure 24 karat gold.

As a young man, Gurhan studied mathematics and business at University in Ankara. His mind is acute and analytical and his early studies drew on the same skills that were later applied to solve problems in using pure metals and developing his proprietary design techniques.

During the 80s, Gurhan’s entrepreneurial spirit and technical bent combined with a love of music led him to sound engineering, while his entrepreneurial spirit translated this into a succession of night clubs and rock bars. Gurhan’s charismatic personality and zest for life quickly made him into a local nightlife celebrity in Ankara and Istanbul.

Gurhan’s love of tinkering from childhood, translated into a fascination for the workings of watches. This new passion brought Gurhan to Switzerland where he learned the craft of watchmaking. His work with antique watches, restoring, reassembling and remaking old fob watches into art pieces, was the feature of several exhibitions in Europe and attracted a fortunate few collectors who acquired his very limited creations from this time.

A casual visit to Istanbul in 1994 would forever change the course of Gurhan’s life. Gurhan was handed a sheet of pure 24 karat gold and was immediately drawn to the warmth and sensuality of the pure metal. The decision was immediate and Gurhan’s vocation was crystallized in that one moment: he would create fine jewelry using this unique material. With that momentous commitment Gurhan returned to Istanbul to begin his new chapter.

1994

1995

1997

1998

1999

Gurhan completes his first finished piece of jewelry for sale! Local Istanbul artisans had scoffed at the idea of using pure 24 karat gold in jewelry, claiming that the material was too soft and too heavy. Embracing challenge, Gurhan had locked himself in a tiny workshop in the Grand Bazaar, rejected modern teachings, and studied the original techniques of the ancient goldsmiths from 1000s of years ago. In his own words, he “reincarnated” the ancients to bring their craft back to the world today.

Gurhan sells his designs in one small shop in the resort town of Bodrum in Turkey, when, Fiona Tilley, an Australian traveler living and working as an investment banker in New York discovers his work. She is Immediately enamored with the distinctive designs and seeks Gurhan out, proclaiming that his designs would be a huge success in the United States.

Gurhan finally decides that the time is right to visit New York. Together with Fiona who joins him as his business partner he launches the brand in the U.S. Gurhan’s designs are quickly identified as a breath of new air in the designer jewelry world. Barneys New York is quick to “discover” Gurhan and the U.S. market sees the rich yellow hue of pure gold for the first time and learns that the “fingerprints” left by Gurhan’s hand crafting make each piece individual and unique.

GURHAN receives the first of many editorial features, in InStyle magazine. The hit heralded Gurhan’s designs as being on the forefront of fashion, as they continue today.

Gurhan and Fiona’s special business partnership is fuelled by a an equally passionate personal relationship; they marry in Sydney Australia in January.

As GURHAN continues to expand as a business, the efforts to promote the line grow, including a national campaign in W. Along with the print campaign, Gurhan’s stunning fancy sapphire necklace was plastered throughout busy Manhattan streets.

Gurhan takes his signature technique in working with pure 24 karat gold to pure platinum. A metal typically used in delicate bridal jewelry, Gurhan rocks the jewelry world by creating highly textural designs incorporating unusual stones for platinum, like aquamarines and blue topaz. “I did pure gold. Now, with platinum, I’m telling people that I don’t have one child. I have two”.

October 2005

Fiona and Gurhan become proud parents of Tipsy, their new Yorkie. Tipsy becomes the mascot of GURHAN and faithfully attends every trunkshow, exhibition and function with Gurhan.

Gurhan and Fiona, along with their baby, Tipsy appear in Samdan magazine, detailing Gurhan’s prolific career. A bona fide celebrity in his native Turkey, the profile in Samdan captures Gurhan’s meteoric rise as a jewelry designer.

GURHAN has long attracted celebrities with his distinctive designs, but when a striking picture of Angelina Jolie wearing GURHAN appears on the cover of National Jeweler, a legendary shot is born.

September 2008 Gurhan takes his passion for photography to new heights when shooting the brand’s 2008 national ad campaign. Capturing the jewelry on the workbench with the tools that make the jewelry to emphasize the hand-crafted quality of the designs.

September 2007 The growing international markets for GURHAN are crowned with the opening of Harrods of London, adding to the UK presentations in Harvey Nichol’s and later joined by Liberty’s and Selfridges.

2008 Ever a renaissance man, photography becomes an increasing passion for Gurhan. Like his work in jewelry, Gurhan is completely self-taught in the art of photography. The Future

Gurhan continues to defy expectations and to carve his own path – he builds on this renown in pure gold and pure platinum with the introduction of a pure silver line which echoes his signature aesthetic.
