One floor, One theme Creating differently themed floors will define the affordance of the space and further atract workers to go to different floors for a variety of activities. This will create informal interactions, and change the walking paths around the office. For example: Ground floor: Communal floor for celebration and events 2nd Floor: Collaboration floor 3rd Floor: Training, Meeting rooms 4th Floor: Soft focus, Self Guided learning 5th Floor: Hard focus, Center for concentration

Common Ground By creating a welcoming common area that is open to employees and visitors, users of this space will be able to have more unplanned interactions and sense of community. This space can also act as a landmark at RAND Santa Monica, attracting talent and potential employees.

Work Healthier

Increase personal comfort, decrease workplace injuries With the use of moveable furniture and mixed use areas, employees have a greater sense of personalization and comfort control. Adjustable furniture also allows a boost in productivity. A variety of workspace furniture is beneďŹ cial ergonomically, by allowing employees to choose different chairs and desks to suit their personal ergonomic needs is a way to avoid workplace injuries. Take a moment to relax The courtyard can be created into a place for relaxation and privacy, with the use of visual and acoustic partions. Not only does courtyard usage increase, but employees can also reduce stress throughout the day, and have access to an inviting outdoor space for working, eating, and socializing.

Bringing in new knowledge Providing workshops to introduce latest technology and concepts to employees and graduate students allows participants to be prepared for incoming challenges. Workshops and seminars also encourage employees and graduate students to interact and exchange knowledge with each other.

Facilitating interaction: snack areas Providing more open eating areas encourages unplanned social interaction (Waber, MagnolďŹ , and Lidsay, 2014) Snack areas can offer additional locations for working, giving employees a change of scenery. Outdoor snack areas encourage employees to utilize the patio area, giving access to nature. Views of nature relieves stress, and promotes physical and mental health. Occasional Foodtrucks can add incentive to come into the ofďŹ ce.

Find family support at RAND A family friendly working environemnt will help reduce the stress that comes from both work and family. Providing support to the families of employees implies that RAND cares about its employees, leading to increased employee loyalty.

The last mile: Bring talent to RAND Making the commute to the office easier could be a way to attract talent as well as increase the number of employees coming into the office. Potential solutions: Partner with Local transportation services for discounts Provide shuttle bus services Incentives for carpooling Expand on current flexible working hours

Additional Case Study: OECD

PARDEE Strategies: 1. Lifetime Learning

create environment that encourage continued learning

2. Quick Hands-On Skills

provide options for students to focus on developing technical skill

3. Fun

encourage self-driven, individual knowledge pursuit

4. Effective Learning

allow students to learn through collaboration

Pardee Students of 2030 A day in the life of Rhanda

Rhanda Second-year student

Fun 9:00am Quick breakfast with RAND employee Lifetime Learning 10:00am Guest presentation in immersive classroom Effective Learning 11:30am Group project in teamwork space Quick Hands-On Skills 2:00pm Learn vizualizing data techniques in makerspace

Breakfast Social Students have an opportunity for collective learning and increased social value, along with work related learning. By arranging a time where students and RAND employees can have access to free coffee, not only is there is a boost in interaction but also information exchange. Breakfast and coffee can be served in the proposed common area within RAND. Coffee hour is a way for RAND to further shape a sense of community between all the members of RAND and Pardee, bringing them closer together.

Classrooms without Borders Any time any place- with the use of advanced technology, students can access the classroom in any other space through livestreams, AR and VR. When giving presentations or working with others, interactive boards will allow students to better translate and formulate ideas. This follows the trend of building lifetime learning for students at RAND.

Team Space By having areas for students to work together, more collaboration is encouraged. These spaces are not simply just work spaces, but also integrated with technology that accelerates the learning process. Using AI, cloud computing and the newest technology, students will have the most optimized learning experience possible. Team space acts as an informal team space for students to work together, positioned in the collaboration oor that follows the idea of One Floor One Theme.

Makerspace Visualization is very important for Pardee students. Having a Makerspace within Pardee allows students and colleagues to visualize ideas, as well as conceptualize ideas and spur creativity. Local experts are invited to work with students on any ideas they may have, and some staff and faculty are always present for students. The Makerspace comprises of a 3D printer, 3D modeling, and other tools to create. The space acts also as both a collaborative and personal work area, encouraging innovation.
