I first came to Cornell to study Electrical and Computer Engineering. Although I transferred to design after a year, it left me with an appreciation for science and research that would influence me strongly as a designer, shaping my view and interpretation of my surroundings. 60' - 0" 6"

From a young age, I’ve had a fascination with design and architecture - I started making my first floor plans based on Dwell magazines when I was nine. Now, what I find fascinating is the power thoughtful, evidence-based design can have on the human experience. This allows me to approach my work with purpose, creating spaces that elevate and influence.

ambulatory surgery center A healthcare clinic in Charlotte, NC.
Created for the IIDA Student Design Competition, this ambulatory surgery center is a response to the challenge to design for a value-based, rather than volume-based, care model. We created a relaxing, zen-like environment that is modelled after the retail experience. My Role: Contributed to floor plan, surgery reception rendering, FF&E, concept, research.

surgery reception
site research We aimed to draw from the site’s North Carolina location, incorporating Charlotte imagery as well as vernacular materials, seen in the wood feature walls and interior plants. background research We based our decisions and concept on the extensive healthcare design research available. This included incorporation of biophilia, creating a retail-inspired experience, and emphasizing staff wellbeing.

the pullman hotel An adaptive re-use hotel & restaurant in Scranton, PA.
The existing Pennsylvania Paper Co. building was completed in 1889. The building carries historical significance, as well as many unique architectural features, making it ideal for an adaptive reuse. My Role: This project was unique in that it was done individually, so everything shown I was responsible for.
9
historic precedent The windows on the Penn Paper Building are integral to the overall style of the building. The slight rounded arch of the windows guided many of my design decisions. For example, the shape and layout of my bar and restaurant mimic this arch, as do features of the bar’s custom alcohol display and storage. demographics and culture Median Age: 36.7 Married: 46% Households w/ Children: 24.4% Median Income (Household): $38,232 Culture: Tourism is one of the main industries in Pennsylvania, pumping roughly $40 billion into the economy. Pennsylvania unveiled a new slogan in 2016: Pennsylvania, Pursue Your Happines in an effort to promote tourism.

Penn Paper Co. Steamtown National Historic Site Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel The University of Scranton
background research Scranton, PA owes much of its industrial growth to mining and train transportation. The exportation of coal via railroads allowed the city to flourish through the 1800s and early 1900s. I chose to celebrate this history through the design and branding of the hotel. The Pullman Hotel is named for George Pullman, designer of the Pullman Car, a sleeping car known for its comforable and high-end accomodations. The hotel incorporates a gold and black color palette, alluding to its mining history.
concept A Ceremonial Passage stems from the essence and emotion that early train travel evoked: awe, delight, and surprise. There was also an aspect of linearity and rhythm, in time and scene, that’s captured in the hotel’s design. The layout of the hotel rooms features a pattern of sizes that alters the hallway, creating a rhythmic experience as guests walk down it.

moravia central library A middle school and high school library in Moravia, NY.
A pain point for the school was the library. It hadn’t been rennovated in some time, and was not meeting the needs or goals of its users, including the students, librarian, and teachers. My Role: Contributed to the site observation and analysis, conducting interviews, space mapping, construction documents, lounge area rendering, and presentation.
18
lounge
site research
A site walk-through and observation of the use of the space indicated current challenges: areas of high noise levels and low acoustic privacy, high glare near windows, dark and cramped areas near the bookshelves, librarian’s desk acting as a barrier for communication
background research
Through initital research on millenials, generation-z and modern library design, we were able to identify the major trends and traits for our target users: being digital natives, valuing choice and flexibility, being group and socially oriented, and being multitaskers.
user research
Interviews with small groups of students and faculty revealed current user dissatisfaction with the space: e.g. librarian desk not easily accessible, needs rearrangeable furniture, students want lounge space to socialize, librarian needs visual access to all areas of library.

wharton studio museum A silent film museum in Ithaca, NY.
Wharton Studio Museum (WSM) is to be constructed across two locations in downtown Ithaca. Not yet built, we provided a set of design guidelines to guide the design of the space, as well as strategies to implement after opening. My Role: Contributed to all research and existing site analysis, interior rendering, experience map, and design guidelines/strategies.

site research After analyzing the current site, we identified two site elements that we deemed most important: signage, or how well the building can be located, and connectivity between the two locations, or how well one museum location expands on and directs visitors to the other location.
industry research Analysis of MoMA PS1 and San Francisco Silent Film Festival provided valuable insight about how to bridge WSM’s identity across two sites, connect to the surrounding community, and display their artifacts.
user research Interviews and visioning sessions with WSM’s key stakeholders, as well as industry leaders and potential visitors to WSM, provided insight such as offering community events, connecting to nature, and utilizing signage.
22
ithaca commons challenges: 1 Sinage/Connectivity: The building is still in rennovation, and there is no signage for Wharton Studio Museum. 2 Surroundings: There is easy vehicular and pedestrian access. Local restaurants and shops surround the building.
stewart park challenges: 1 Sinage/Connectivity: Limited visual access to museum from street. The most convenient way to get there is by car, not available to many students. 2 Surroundings: The building is adjacent to the park, playground, pavillion, lake, and communal hall. Most infrastructure is currently not in use.
major challenge for both sites is creating *Aconnection & unity between the two
23
design criteria Identifies criteria that WSM can implement to better align its spaces and services with its mission and values.

restpod A conceptual exercise to rethink the hotel experience.
This project was entirely concept-based, submitted to a competition to rethink the meaning of a hotel. In our response, we questioned the size, permenance, and service of a hotel, adapting it to fit the needs of a common experience drivers face. My Role: Contributed to the concept development, presentation, and text.

the problem Each year, drunk driving is responsible for 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 6,000 deaths, and researchers suggest that fatalities are as much as 350% greater than reported. It is also most common in those under the age of 25. RestPod tackles this problem by providing a convenient, safe, and flexible way for drivers to rest during their drive.
