THE KOHLER

ART LIBRARY

HIGHER EDUCATION MAdison, wi SQ FT: 12,800

DESIGN PROBLEM STATEMENT: The Kohler Art Library resides in the heart of the University of Wisconsin-Madisonʼs campus at 800 University Ave. What should be a hub of creativity and academia is instead a hidden time capsule. The library was originally built in 1970 to blend into the Elvehjem building that is now connected to the Chazen Museum of Art. Blend it has. The library is all but hidden from pedestrian traffic from the exterior and is easy to miss upon building entry. The goal for the Kohler Art Library remodel is to provide a space for art historians, artists, and designers alike, while being inclusive to the rest of the Universityʼs student body and faculty. Users will enjoy a palette of work zones conducive to all disciplines and work styles. The library welcomes guests into an experience that is “galvanizing to the creative spirit,” as eloquently stated by University librarian, Anna Simon. The library will serve as an inspirational canvas for students and faculty to channel art, creativity, and innovation.

THE ART LIBRARY OF TODAY: As technology has claimed its grasp within our lives, libraries have been in a state of flux to find congruencies with changing technology and culture. Rather than being a space to only physically provide information to users, libraries of today are moving towards providing users with physical and digital information, but most importantly providing a space of function. “Ideally, art and design libraries are hybrid spaces that combine features of a gallery and a studio with the characteristics of a contemporary academic library,” as stated in the Handbook of Art and Design Librarianship by Leo Appleton, Karen Latimer, and Pat Christie. The modern art library should be visually stimulating to foster the creative spirit.

REBIRTH REINVENTION

MOOD

BOARD

CONCEPT STATEMENT: Light, then war, then darkness, then a God, then art, then color, then light.... Throughout history this cycle has repeated over and over again for thousands of years since the beginning of mankind. As a result, this cycle has been reflected in our art through the ages. Art is the story of a people encapsulated at any given point in time and place. Their hopes, dreams, fears... realities. Art has been an avenue to document and equally tumultuous, victorious, and etherial ride through history. Darkness gives way to light, rebirth, and the chance for reinvention. The re-design of the Kohler Art Library highlights and celebrates moments of illumination and rebirth. The cycle is emphasized through circular motifs. Additionally, this concept manifests itself through zones within the library. During the process of learning, we begin unsure of where we are going. Then, discovery begins to occur; stepping out of darkness and into the light of understanding. The library design features research and scholarship zones representative of the uncovering and discovery phases of learning. Creativity, community, and relax zones are representative of clarity and understanding.

THE HORSE BARN APARTMENTS & CONFERENCE CENTER

RESIDENTIAL MAdison, wi SQ FT: 10,335

design concept The goal for the Horse Barn Apartments and Conference Center re-model is to create a comfortable, luxurious, and functional retreat for the University of Wisconsin-MadisonĘźs prestigious guests. Within each apartment, guests are able to unwind after a day of study, business, or research. The atmosphere is both comfortable and welcoming in order to serve dual purposes as a place of work and relaxation. The design integrates modern features into the beautiful, historic horse barn structure. As a tribute to the history of the site, original wood and metals are used in the reimaginged, modern design. Within the space, guests are transported to a ski resort in the Rockies. Layers of comforting texture and neutral color palette enhance the sensation of decadent escape.

MEDICAL OFFICES & CLINIC

CORPORATE OFFICES SEATTLE, WA SQ FT: 12,000

design concept NEXT is a place where the community can come together to seek mental, emotional, and physical well-being. NEXT Clinc and Medical Offices is based off of the 2017 Steelcase Student Design Competition guidelines. With a natural spa-like atmosphere, patients and staff alike are provided a sense of well-being. This is accomplished through several WELL Building concepts from Delos and zoning methods as researched by Steelcase. The most influential WELL Building Concepts carried through NEXT are: Light, comfort, and mind. Large windows and strategically located corridors allow natural light to filtrate through the space, while serene colors and soothing textures comfort guests and employees. Finally, WELL Building suggests that the mind and body directly influence one another; to have a healthy mind, one must also have a healthy body. NEXT features zoning strategies, as suggested by Steelcase, to support movement throughout the day. This allows the mind to stay active and engaged. NEXT stands out from the crowd with its ability to inspire others to live well through positive, holistic care. The clinical office of NEXT welcomes patients into an environment where all feel welcome; where community, positivity, and well-being are inspirited every day.
