United Nations Press Conference Friday, 4 May 2012, 11 AM Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium, 1st Avenue at 44th Street, New York
“The Green Economy” Business, NGOs, Youth organizations describe -‘What are its processes, potentials and risks?’ Leading representatives of a diverse range of international civil society organizations will review the new economic model proposed as the “Green Economy” in negotiations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development [Rio+20], less than seven weeks away. Leaders of Business, Youth and NGO coalitions will each present their own perspective on the ambitious Green Economy blueprint for engaging major economic actors in a transition to more sustainable production principles and practices. Some will express concerns that an uncritical acceptance of the green economic model will lead to widespread ‘greenwashing,’ or abandonment of the elaborately-articulated principles of sustainable development agreed at the original “Earth Summit,” in 1992. They will cite the risk that it might lead to a wholesale ‘commodification’ of all natural resources. Others will emphasize the positive potential of a green economic model. And they will define some of the criteria that could be adopted, and the governmental action that could be taken to enable a smoother and more equitable transition. With 100 governments having announced attendance by their heads-of-government or state, and ministries, the Conference has in effect achieved status as a global Summit. Speakers Ms. Martina Bianchini
