PORTFOLIO MA’AYAN PESACH

LATEST PROJECTS, SEPTEMBER 2014.

ABOUT. My name is Ma’ayan Pesach and I recently graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, in the department Man and Leisure. My work is diverse and contains conceptual design, product, graphic and also art. Most of my projects are influenced by my background and daily personal experiences in different aspects of life. I found out that I tend to be the observer in most situations and projects. When starting, I document and analyze, constantly questioning as I gather the full story. In most of my work I try to bring the fantasy and imagination to the viewer/user to stimulate their curiosity about everyday life. Stacked Series Stacked series is a collaboration made with Sander Wassink. The colourful experimental project, bring together old & unused glass with a combination of resin and pigments. Every new group starts from collecting large amounts of forgotten glass pieces, from varied quality, period and usage. The compositions then take place; creating unique objects build from different glass items. To attach all the pieces to one unit lamp we used colourful resin (mostly green) which creates strong reflection when lighted. The lamp is hanging by thin copper wires and lighted by led light, which keep the temperature low (mainly for the sensitive combination of glass and resin). Each lamp is unique and numbered in a special polaroid archive. Since every time the result is surprising and different, the photos helps us to keep on tracking the amount and overview of the whole series. The lamps are being sold via several shops worldwide and as well through us; for specific requests and mainly interior projects.

Food For Thought. Our most powerful memories relate to feelings, experiences, places, events and objects. These emotions last a lifetime and can be awakened by a particular smell, appearance, texture or sound. Food is a powerful instigator of such memories, and in my project, food is a tool that opens an instinctive door to nostalgia. In the book Food For Thought; I interviewed people of different ages, backgrounds and beliefs about the intersection between their strongest memories and their recollections of food. The most evocative stories I heard were captured in a culinary collection of anecdotes, fantasies, rituals and recipes.

Tribaling MassProduction I see food as a channel to a place of safety and comfort. Inspired by the written word, I created series of objects called Food Stories Come Alive; a dinner set that illustrates the origin of food in a primal and almost tribal way. Waste products from the food industry (including bones, hair and skin) are incorporated into post-fossil dishes and totemic tableware, linking the origin of the species to the species at the table and forging a more respectful relationship between the hunter and the hunted. The final outcome is a collection of unique objects, made intuitively from several materials and techniques, which together create a collage of old crafts using modern mass-produced items and waste products from the food industry. The tableware is semi-practical, at times abstract and surreal. It raises questions about the future of eating, culture, and rituals, repurposing the leftovers of our hyper-consumerism to create new meanings for potential scenarios to come.

Bio Plastic In this experiment research I was mixing natural and sustainable materials in order to find a strong, flexible and useful material that could be modify in the future in different ways. The material could be reshaped, molded and change thickness to become the base for functional objects, such as – bags, cups, textile, etc.The ingredients used to make that plastic are easy to gather, affordable and non-toxic. One of my goals for that experiment was to find out ways of coloring the plastic with natural pigment from daily items around us (fruits, vegetables, dairy products, herbs, spices, etc). The final range of colors was presented hanged in a raw, so that the color, texture and density of the each plastic sheet was visible and showed the differences between the pieces.

COMMUNICTION in Woensel, EINDHOVEN. The set of dolls was made for a research in the neighborhood “Oud Woensel” in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. After observing the area I noticed that in each house there is a big front window that is facing to the street side and that normally the Tenants are decorating it very carefully with their “best statement”. Often the curtains are completely sealed and on the low shelf there will be standing some object that relate to the person who live there. I liked the idea that you can tell a story through a chosen object, but unfortunately most of the times- the stories that are presents reflect no unique or personal feeling. Mainly it’s about symmetrical or standard objects that don’t bring any special emotion. Living in the neighborhood for a year made me realize the lack of contact and solidarity among the inhabitants. My addition to the surrounding was a set of dolls that became a communicator between the different neighbors and meant to be standing in the front window shelf. The dolls speak up the current state of the house owner through their missing elements. My concept wasn’t created in order to solve the neighborhood problem or to be used in a very practical way for that specific matter; the idea behind was to visualize the social interactions nowadays in the area. There is one main body and 5 heads that are expressing a certain feeling and state; when each head is missing a certain part (Sham, Dumb, Decimus, Anosmic, & Vapid). + From the original context, I continued to create other variations and appearances of the doll. It slowly became an experiment of materials, colour & possibilities. The dimension of the doll is: 10*7*25 cm.

My grandmother passed away on November 2010. She was diagnosed with an incurable cancer and had 3 months left to live. The last 10 days of her life she spent in a Hospice in Israel. During that period I staid with her wait for her life to end… Being involved with her life and death inspired me to research and analyze the process of dying from my own personal experience of loosing a beloved grandmother, through the religious influences related to the death in Judaism and the spiritual aspect that

emerge after the cessation of life. I was raised in a secular Jewish family and I was taught the basic knowledge of my religion but the practices, rules and rituals involved when dealing with death were unfamiliar to me. For the first time I explored the Kabbalah and its approach to death through the “Tahara” (‫ טהרה‬in Hebrew) process; purifying the body after death.

I changed the order of an existing ceremony and redesigned the ritual by developing a set of tools to honor and respect the dying person while still alive. The outcomes were a movie and a set of tools that commemorate the last moments of terminally ill patients. There are six tools in total, each has a different story and background; gentle body scrubber, cleansing pot & a small cleansing cup, intimate cotton pointer, belonging jar, and Soft hair brush.

(The basic of all the tools is half glazed ceramic, which on top are added extra several materials)
