The publishers of Leb411 deserve my highest commendation for providing an invaluable service to not only the Lebanese community but also the community at large. This book introduces us to the many individuals and groups who care passionately about their businesses and professions and the people they are meant to serve.

The impetus for this directory was to celebrate all the Lebanese shopkeepers and professionals who extend a valuable service to the Edmonton community. Today, the Lebanese community continues to feature prominently within the pages of this book but in addition, members of a diverse multicultural group of businesses and professions in the greater Edmonton area are showcased. All contributors should be recognized for their hard work, entrepreneurial spirit, and success in each of their respective organizations or businesses.

As the educational leader of the Edmonton Islamic Academy, it is my privilege to lead 1200 students representing 26 cultures. The majority of our students represent the Lebanese community and therefore, it is reasonable to expect that the journey of our young students may one day lead them to be featured in Leb411, Inshallah.

Trip to Lebanon

Planning a trip to Lebanon? Some things you should know... 1-Entry Requirements

Visas: All foreigners must have a valid passport and visa to enter Lebanon. Passports must be valid for at least six months. Visas can be obtained in advance at Lebanese embassies and consulates around the world. Nationals of many countries can also obtain business or tourist visas upon arrival at the Beirut Airport and at other ports of entry on the Lebanese border. At the Beirut Airport, visa stamps can be purchased at a window directly across from passport control. You can pay in cash in U.S. dollars or Lebanese pounds. The price of a 15-day visa is US$17 (LL25,000). A single entry, three-month visa is US$35 (LL50,000). Contact the Lebanese embassy or consulate in your country or see the General Directorate of General Security website for additional visa information. Important Note: Travelers holding passports that contain visas or entry/exit stamps for Israel are likely to be refused entry into Lebanon.

CUSTOMS

All ordinary personal effects are exempt from customs duty.

2-Currency

The official Lebanese currency is the Lebanese pound or lira (LL). Notes are available in denominations of: LL1,000; LL5,000; LL10,000; LL20,000; LL50,000; and LL100,000. There are also LL250 and LL500 coins. U.S. dollars are used widely throughout the country. Restaurants, hotels, and stores often quote their prices in U.S. dollars, and many establishments will convert and provide U.S. dollar prices for you upon request. The US$/LL exchange rate is relatively stable, hovering around US$1=LL1,500.

3- Language

While Arabic is Lebanonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official language, English and French are widely spoken. Most Lebanese speak at least two or three languages, and visitors will find no problems communicating. Many establishments provide signs, menus, and information in both Arabic and English.

Lebanese time is G.M.T. +2 hours in winter (October to March) and +3 hours in summer (April to September), when daylight savings time is observed.

5-Business Hours

Shops and businesses are typically open Monday through Saturday, 9:00-18:00. Hours vary, and in summer many establishments close early. Restaurant hours vary, and many restaurants, especially in Beirut, are open late. Banking hours are Monday through Saturday, 8:30-12:30. Working hours for government offices and post offices are typically 8:00-14:00.

Thanks to its diverse population and different religious groups, Lebanon has a full calendar of official holidays. Although all banks, government offices, and schools are closed on holidays, it is often possible to find shops and restaurants open for business. 7-Communications TELEPHONES:

While the telephone system in Lebanon is well-developed, there are few public pay phones, and international phone calls are expensive. Most Lebanese use mobile phones, and coverage extends throughout the country. The country code for Lebanon is (961). This is followed by the local area code and the telephone number. The area code for mobile phones is (03) and the area code for Beirut is (01). If you are dialing Lebanon from outside the country, omit the (0) in the area code.

INTERNET:

There are Internet cafés available throughout Lebanon, and many larger hotels now offer high-speed and wireless Internet access for free or for a small fee. 3G is now available.

8-Electricity

Electric current is 110/220 volts, 50 cycles. A two-pin plug, with round pins is commonly used (Type C, similar to many European countries), but other types of plugs are also in use so it is best to check before you go.

9-Health

Lebanon is a developed country with relatively good health facilities. Similar to travel to other foreign countries, hepatitis A and B vaccines are recommended; also make sure tetanus-diphtheria and measles vaccinations are up-todate. A typhoid vaccine is also recommended for travel to Lebanon. Although Beirut’s tap water is considered safe to drink, it’s probably best to drink bottled water as the Lebanese do. As is the general traveler’s rule, to be absolutely safe drink water only from bottles with intact caps, do not take ice in your drinks, and eat only cooked food and fruits that you can peel.

Rony Seikaly is a retired Lebanese-born American professional basketball player. His number 4 has been retired and raised to the rafters of the Carrier Dome. An interesting archaeological relic found throughout Lebanon is the hundreds of well-preserved mosaics from the Roman and Byzantine eras. Countless colorful, tiny stones form intricate images of mythological figures, religious deities, and geometric designs. Al Oummawi Al Kabir Mosque Located outside the Arab walls that surround the Baalbeck temple ruins is the 7th-8th century Great Umayyad Mosque. The remains of the eastern courtyard, three rows of columns supporting arches, and an octagonal minaret can still be seen. The granite and limestone columns are believed to be from a previous Roman forum and later a Byzantine church located on the same site.

Mount Hermon: Jebel esh-Sheikh The highest peak in the Anti-Lebanon range, Mount Hermon is 2,814m high. It is an important site in the Druze religion, known as Jebel esh-Shiekh, or “mountain of the chief,” because the founder of the Druze religion retired here from Egypt in the 10th century A.D.

Yanta Roman Temple ruins are about two kilometers along the road to Yanta village. The ruins are sparse, but there are a few upright stones still in place. Going out of the village for about 1 km to the west, the road leads you to the mausoleum of the prophet Ayloun, identified by the Druze community with the prophet Elias.

Zahle Zahle is the third largest city in Lebanon and the capital of the Bekaa region. Situated at an elevation of 1,010m on the slopes of the Anti-Lebanon range, The Bardouni River flows through the town, making it a splendid location for its many open-air cafes and restaurants. You will eat and drink well in Zahle while taking in the beautiful old architecture and scenery.

Beit Ed Dine Palace Beiteddine is the name of a village in the Shouf and a beautiful 19th century palace located there. The Ottomanappointed governor, Prince Emir Bachir Chehab II, had the palace constructed over a 30 year period.

Byblos: Jbeil A thriving modern town built upon multiple layers of ruins, Byblos is a mix of sophistication and tradition. A contender for the title of “oldest continuously inhabited city,” Byblos is part of the coastal area once known as Canaan or Phoenicia. Modern scholars believe the site of Byblos dates back at least 7,000 years (5,000-4,000 BC). The city’s current name is taken from the Greek word for “papyrus” (paper). Byblos was not only a major trading center and producer of papyrus, but is also famous for being the city where Phoenician scholars created the world’s first alphabet.

Beirut Central District - Solidere The trendy Solidere area of downtown Beirut has been beautifully restored and is a center for family outings, cafes, shopping, and leisurely walks. The government has paid special attention to rebuilding this area since the war, and today the buildings are magnificant architectural gems, with yellow stonework, arabesque archways, and wrought-iron scrollwork. The cobblestone pedestrian streets are lined with shops selling unique traditional crafts, trendy designer fashions, jewelry, and many other things. There are over 70 restaurants and sidewalk cafes, which are popular places to spend a warm evening. At the center of Solidere is the Place dEtoile and Clock Tower, a popular area for children to ride bikes and play while their parents relax at a nearby cafe.

Al Omari Mosque (Beirut) One of the first buildings to be restored following the war by martyr Rafic Hariri, the Al Omari Mosque dates from 1291. In this year the Mamluks rested control of Beirut from the Crusaders and converted the former 12th century Crusader church (Cathedral of St. John) into the great mosque. Visitors should be appropriately attired and remove their shoes before entering. Entry is not permitted during prayer hours and not permitted at any time during the month of Ramadan.

Cathedral of St. Elias (Greek Catholic) The Greek-Catholic Cathedral of St. Elias was built in the mid-19th century and was famous for its marble iconostasis. The cathedral is awaiting renovation following wartime destruction.

Emir Assaf Mosque: Al Saray Mosque This mosque was built by the Turkish Emir Mansour Assaf (1572-1580). It is located opposite the Municipal Building at the entrance to the Sursock market in Central Beirut. It is also known as the Saraya mosque, meaning â&#x20AC;&#x153;palace,â&#x20AC;?

National Museum of Beirut Built in 1937, the National Museum of Beirut houses antiquities and treasures from all over Lebanon, dating from prehistoric times through the Ottoman period. Located on the Green Line during the war, the museum building and some of its artifacts were severely damaged or destroyed. Following the end of the war (1991), funds were raised and restoration work took place between 1995-2000. The museum was reopened in 1999. With a rich collection
