Dive into something cool this summer at Mayfield Senior School’s Summer Institute! Between June 22 and July 23, young women in grades 6 to 12 can explore their interests in vibrant and innovative programs that are designed to enrich mind, body and spirit. Mayfield’s Summer Institute offers more than 30 courses, from full five-week immersion programs to shorter, intensive workshops in subjects ranging from geometry to GarageBand! Whether your daughter wants to hone her skills or discover a new talent, we have a range of entry-level, intermediate and advanced courses that take a handson approach to learning in subjects including math, science, English, creative writing, dance, theatre, music, visual arts and more - plus a variety of dynamic craft workshops and sports camps. We also offer recurring courses that include comprehensive test preparation courses for the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam), as well as the SAT and ACT college entrance exams. All test prep courses are co-ed. Mayfield Senior School is a Catholic, independent, college-preparatory school for young women. Arts @Mayfield The Mayfield Summer Institute for the Arts provides a highly creative and challenging arts program. Technique and concept-centered arts instruction focus on developing personal expression in each artistic discipline. Advanced Dance/Performance Lab Open to students in grades 7 through 12. Open to current Mayfield Dance Conservatory students or by audition.
This class is for the serious dance student. This course will focus on ballet, modern/contemporary, conditioning, choreography, dancer’s process, performance skills and hip hop. Along with the regular classes, two days a week the students will take an off-campus dance excursion to study at some of L.A.’s most popular dance studios. This course is for the student who is already part of the Dance Conservatory and any other student who would like to pursue her training and creative process. Beginning/Intermediate Dance Open to students in grades 7 through 9
Tap into your spirit through dance! This class is for the beginning to intermediate level student (one-two years experience in dance). The course will focus on technique training in ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre and cultural dance. This course is for the student interested in the Dance Conservatory or for those who just want to strengthen their technique. It is also the perfect course for incoming Mayfield students, as it provides an atmosphere for them to get to know each other. Students will perform in a final recital on July 23. Beginning/Intermediate Theatre Open to students in grades 6 through 9
Explore the craft of acting in a fun and focused course. This class emphasizes physical, vocal and creative training and is designed to expand your skills as a performer. Subjects will include improvisation, personal expression and dramatic exploration. Students will learn about character creation, focus on stage and creating an ensemble through teamwork. Each year, the summer program highlights a different dramatic form, and students are encouraged to repeat the course to further build their dramatic skills. The class will culminate with a final performance for parents and friends on July 22. (Pike Auditorium) June 22 – July 23 (Five weeks) 2 – 4 p.m. $450
This is the ideal class to learn how to sing in an ensemble! Students will be introduced to intermediate choral singing techniques. This course covers posture, breath support, vowel production, tone color, and style. Basic music theory and sight-reading will be introduced as music is explored through many languages, cultures and styles. This course will conclude with a performance on the last day of class. Photography Lab & Camera Hands-On Experience Open to students in grades 6 through 12
Have you ever wanted to learn more about photography and the darkroom? This class centers on camera operation and aesthetics, exposure control, film processing, printmaking, and the development of a personal style. Regular shooting assignments, group discussion and critiques encourage individual skills and interests. A survey of photographic history is included to increase visual awareness and to suggest the relationship of photography to other visual arts. Required items to be supplied by the student: 35mm SLR (single lens reflex) manual control camera with internal light meter and a 3-ring binder. (registration fee includes 6-8 rolls of film). Vocal Performance Open to students in grades 6 through 12
Learn solid vocal performance technique in five weeks. This class is perfect for anyone who loves to sing and wants to learn more about solo repertoire, both classical and musical theatre for auditions, or simply to have fun learning how to sing your very best! Summer Arts Intensives This program of short intensive classes is designed for the student who wants to explore a new art form or delve deeper into a specific skill in theatre or music.
Baking Open to students in grades 6 through 12
Do you love baked goods? Have you always wanted to learn how to create your own delicious treats? Enroll in this fun introduction to the culinary art of candy making, baking and cake decoration. Course taught by an awardwinning baker, Sam Robinson. Mr. Robinson’s treats have been honored in the L.A. and Orange County Fairs and in the KCRW Pie Contest. Students experience a comprehensive course of study in the experimental use of technology as a creative tool. This studio art course is inspired by the maker movement, integrated media artwork, and DIY culture, where imagination motivates learning by doing. Floral Design Open to students in grades 6 through 12
In this introduction to the art of crafting beautiful flower arrangements, students will learn floral design principles for table centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages as well as vased arrangements and facts to keep your arrangements fresh for longer. Taught by Sam Robinson, owner of Flowers By Sam featured on David Tutera’s hit show, My Fair Wedding. Unlock your musical creativity through the popular music software, GarageBand! This fun workshop will explore the ins and outs of using GarageBand through the creation of your own creative sound-based project. You will learn how to record, track, loop, mix, add effects, and export projects for class presentation. All musical levels from beginner to advanced are welcome, and no prior knowledge of sound equipment or recording is needed. Students will need to bring their own Apple laptop or iPad and headphones.
Instrumental Music Workshop Open to students in grades 7 through 12
Make music, build skills and to take your music to a higher level! This workshop will focus on building skills in rhythm, harmony, sight-reading and performance of instrumental music. We will explore a range of musical styles that include classical, popular, world music, experimental, drones and free improvisation. The workshop will conclude with a fun performance. This workshop is perfect for the junior high student or incoming Mayfield student. Beginner and intermediate instrumentalists are encouraged to take this fun class that will end with a delightful performance. Instrumental Music Performance on July 16 at 5pm. Painting Picnic Open to students in grades 6 through 12
Painting what the eye actually sees is celebrated in the traditions of both French and Californian impressionism epitomized by the “plein air” movement. We will explore this modality and history of painting with loose brushwork and vibrant color. Observing nature will be our inspiration while watercolor and acrylic paint will be our medium. Share in the process of animating inanimate objects as performing characters. Get inspired by Jim Henson’s Muppets, stop-motion animation, traditional marionette theatre, shadows and silhouettes. We will interpret a scene from a historical painting and bring it to life by analyzing the painting, writing a script, developing the characters and crafting the puppets and sets to develop a puppet theatre performance. Summer Art History Seminar: Exploring Humankind/Creative Expression Open to students in grades 11 through 12
This two-week session engages students in examining the world’s art and deepening their appreciation of the universal human impulse to create. Through readings, film, firsthand encounters with art in the local community, and web-based analyses of art throughout the world, students will acquire an expanding awareness of the vital role art plays in the development of humankind. Students will be introduced to aspects of art history through an examination of art in historical context and development of skills of visual analysis and interpretation. Through field trips to local museums and monuments, web-based explorations of art, readings, writing and discussion, students will have the opportunity to deepen their appreciation and enjoyment of art and the global phenomenon of creative expression. Urban Scribe Open to students in grades 6 through 12
Discover the landscape of architecture and urban planning across centuries, cultures, and geographic topologies. We will actively investigate urban design through drawing in plan view from the perspective of a bird flying above as well as drawing in elevation view from the point of view of a human observer in the landscape. We will journey to the cities of the past and present while imagining possibilities for the city of the future. Algebra Open to students in grades 7 and 8
This class is designed to teach the fundamentals of Algebra and its many applications in science, technology, business, and everyday life. The class will cover the fundamentals of Algebra that are most needed for success in future math courses. A TI82/83+ calculator is recommended, but not required. Geometry Mayfield Math Department permission required
The material in this class covers selected topics in geometry such as parallel lines, quadrilaterals, congruency, similar polygons, circles, secants, tangents, inscribed angles, and segments of circles. Introduction to Experimental Science Mayfield Science Department permission required
Through formulating questions, designing experiments, making observations, deriving results, and forming conclusions, students learn laboratory skills. These skills include the use of lab equipment to obtain measurements, the determination of accuracy and precision, the application of reason and mathematical skills to find relationships and patterns, and the ability to work individually

This class will provide students with an overview/context for doing academic research. We will discuss the concept of “intellectual property” and provide guidance for ethical research practices. Students will practice searching for information in different academic disciplines, using online and print search tools. Students will also learn how to identify citation elements in a variety of sources. Lastly, students will learn techniques for organizing and annotating source material and how to use citation tools/manuals to accurately cite a variety of source types. Students will learn how to analyze words, while gaining skills to increase their vocabulary and appreciate the history and development of the English language. Creative Writing Workshop Open to students in grades 7 through 12
This workshop is open to student writers of all levels and interests. You will be given a variety of exercises to get your creative juices flowing. Students will write short stories, creative nonfiction, and scripts. You will be able to share your writing with your classmates for feedback and encouragement. This course will reinforce the most essential grammar concepts needed to write effectively. Athletics @Mayfield Mayfield Summer Sports Camps are designed to provide the student/athlete with a foundation of fundamental skills, knowledge, character and leadership development and a love of athletics. Recognizing that while skills and drills are critical to the improvement of the athlete, making sports FUN is essential to developing the “passion for the game.” Our multi sports camps offer a cross training to not only help develop overall athleticism, but keep sport fresh and exciting. Please Note: Participation in any of the summer athletic classes does not guarantee a place on a MSS team. All students must try out each year to earn a place on a team. Cubs Camp Open to students in grades 5 through 8
The Mayfield Senior School Big Red Sports Camp is week long camp geared towards giving campers a unique introduction to several different sports. They will be engaged in activities led by a team of fun counselors and coaches. With a new sport being offered each day, campers will be able to experience several different sports within a short time period. The camp is dedicated to teaching team work, sportsmanship and positive self esteem. Mornings will be packed with fun and creative sports-specific games as well as team building activities. Sports Activities: Volleyball, tennis, softball, basketball, capture the flag, aqua aerobics, hiking, dodgeball and more. Cubs Camp will give students the opportunity to learn basic skills of several different sports while having fun and meeting new people. Enrollment Procedure Register online at www.mayfieldsenior.org/summer. Registration is open until May 29. Class size is limited and enrollment is determined on a first come first served basis. If a class is full, students will be placed on a waiting list. If an opening does not occur, tuition and registration f ees will be refunded in full. Registration confirmation will be emailed upon receipt of registration. Schedules will be emailed prior to the beginning of school. Refund Policy All fees are non-refundable unless a class is cancelled by the school, the class is full, a student does not make it off a wait list and must withdraw, or a student who has applied for financial aid is not awarded sufficient aid to make the class economically feasible for the family. Cancellation of Classes All courses are offered on condition of adequate enrollment. A full refund will be made in the event of a course cancellation or students may choose an alternate course. Notification of cancelled classes will be made by Friday, June 12, 2015. School Hours Summer Institute hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday unless otherwise indicated in the catalogue. With the exception of the lunch hour, students are required to be in a class while on campus. All students must be picked up when their classes end. Academic Credit Not all courses are offered for academic credit. If a student is taking a course for academic credit, she may request on the registration form that the transcript of course work be mailed to the designated school. Mayfield students will have the course credit added to their transcripts automatically. Incoming ninth grade

Mayfield Senior School is committed to supporting a financial aid program for students who would like to take part in the summer program but lack sufficient financial resources to meet the full tuition costs. Need-based financial aid will be awarded to incoming and returning Mayfield Senior School students. In order to qualify for tuition assistance, families must demonstrate financial need. Please contact Clemmie Phillips, Director of Admissions, for information about Financial Aid. Dress Code Dress is casual yet appropriate for school (e.g. shorts, T-shirts, jeans, etc.). Students are expected to use good judgment in their choice of clothing. No bare midriffs, short shorts, or short skirts. Lunch The Summer Institute does not provide lunch. Students may bring their own snacks and lunch and have use of the kitchen in the Student Commons, including the use of the microwave and refrigerator. Off-Campus Policy If a student drives herself, she may leave for lunch or when her class is over. Otherwise, students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch or for any other reason without adult supervision or parental permission. Behavior Students are expected to adhere to school rules and behave properly. Violation of the school’s code of conduct may lead to a student’s dismissal with no tuition refund.
